JOLIET – State Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, said she hopes Monday’s meeting of her new citizens advisory committee will be the first of many dedicated to finding new ways to help veterans through legislation and building support networks.

Nearly two dozen veterans, supporters and nonprofit leaders attended Manley’s Veterans Citizens Advisory Committee meeting, held Monday morning at her office at 2701 Black Road in Joliet. The event was open to anyone.

Much of the event centered around challenges faced by veterans navigating the health care system and securing ben-

efits, and the lack of support from non-veterans upon returning home.

Others, including Kevin Leverence, an Iraq war veteran from Joliet, suggested that the resources are there, but veterans don’t know about them.

Community outreach requires money, which many nonprofits, VFW posts and other non-government agencies do not have, he said.

“Let’s bring people together,” Leverence said. “One of the best things we can do is find the best things that are already there. We don’t need to reinvent the wheel.”

Veterans have available the Orland Park Vet Center, the Will County Veterans Assistance Commission, and Family & Friends Day Center

Inc., a social service agency with three veterans houses in Joliet, he said.

Leverence, who has post-traumatic stress disorder, said the resources provided by the Will County VAC saved his life, and could save others, too.

“Those need more energy,” he said. “Putting energy, resources and time into those things. ... That’s where we’re going to get bang for your buck.”

More needs to be done to reach homeless vets and to fund nonprofits that provide essential services, said Geriann Wiesbrook, founder of the Joliet-based Military Mama Network, a support group for military families, those overseas and veterans.

Crest Hill keeps wastewater treatment expansion plans open

vshanker@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Consolidation of the east and west waste-water treatment plants in Crest Hill still is on the table, but city officials are not yet committing to that course of action.

The City Council opted on Monday to continue with the next phase of treatment plant expansion analysis by contracting consultant Strand Associates at a cost of $18,000.

That phase involves examining the possibility of keeping both waste-water treatment plants.

“The city is exploring all of the options available,” Mayor Ray Soliman said.

The east treatment plant was renovated about three years ago with $24 million.

But the aging west treatment plant, built in 1968 and last upgraded in 1993, is undergoing constant repairs.

Two years ago, the city approved the authorization of $20.3 million in bonds to fund reconstruction of the west plant at Theodore Street and Gaylord Road. But last year, Strand Associates was hired on a $22,200 contract to explore

The recent results of that study was an upfront cost of $41.3 million for consolidation, but also cost savings in the long run, Interim Director of Public Works Paul Burris said.

Burris said the city was able to compare costs with a total waste-water handling of 3 million gallons, with consolidation being a better option.

But that total is almost at capacity. So the city wants to look at its options with a total capacity of 4.3 million gallons, Burris said.

New website

The city also approved sending out requests for proposals for design, implementation and maintenance of a new website.

Some of the goals of the initiative is to provide a more

user-friendly, informative and interactive website for residents, according to the request for proposal.

That includes features such as emergency alerts, mobile integration, archive center for city documents and announcements, an interactive calendar, the ability to build or upload city forms, form tracking, easy access to permits, licensing and municipal codes, financial information and a transparency page.

There was no discussion among the city council about the measure. But the vote to approve it wasn’t unanimous.

City Councilwoman Tina Oberlin was the lone dissenter of the 7-1 vote. After the meeting, she said she wanted to wait before redesigning the website.

“We’re in the process of selecting a new city administrator and we are so close,” Oberlin said, referencing the search to replace John Tomasoski, who left the city for the village of Mokena. The city council hired Cameron Davis as the interim administrator in October.

“I think we should have put it on hold until we hired the new, permanent administra-

As is the case with any complex issue, few tangible solutions emerged in the twohour session, but Manley said she hopes the commission will meets monthly.

MLK Jr. Day was a ‘Day On, Not a Day Off’ in Joliet

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Monday was a day to serve others for nearly 600 people who volunteered for the Martin Luther King Jr. “Day On, Not a Day Off” activities in the Joliet area.

Chloe Miller, a junior at Joliet West High School, and several companions were waiting for their assignment Monday after a morning breakfast and pep rally at the school.

Miller said she viewed the day as “an opportunity; I think it will be very nice to do something for the community.”

Jose Ferreira, a freshman at Joliet Central High School, was headed to Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, and was looking forward to it despite the below-zero wind chill that greeted outdoor volunteers Monday.

“We usually don’t do much as kids,” he replied when asked why he chose to volunteer rather than stay home on the day off from school. “I thought it would be better to help out.”

“Day On, Not a Day Off” is Joliet’s version of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service activities done to commemorate the civil rights leader’s service to his community.

Scrubbing, making valentines and dancing

The volunteers helped out 28 organizations, most of them nonprofit groups, by painting walls, cleaning windows, stocking food pantry shelves and more. A number of volunteers made Valentine’s Day cards for troops abroad. Others danced or sang for seniors in Joliet.

“I just want to help out,” said Benny Brown, who headed to the Spanish Community Center with a group from the Joliet Job Corps.

Many of the places where the volunteers worked were otherwise closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. “You’ll be providing service to people you may never meet,” event coordinator R.

Dale Evans told the volunteers gathered in the Joliet West cafeteria before they left for their assignments. “Because you don’t see them, that doesn’t mean you don’t help them.”

At St. John’s Head Start Center on Hickory Street, the building was empty but for a handful of volunteers cleaning windows and scrubbing shelves.

The volunteers included Tamara Holman of Shorewood and her son, Christian, 9, and daughter, Symone, 7, who were cleaning windows.

“I always try to find some activity for the kids on Martin Luther King Day because they have the day off,” Holman said. “We’ve been to the museum and drew pictures for

Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I thought this would be more active and would be doing something for people, which is what Martin Luther King did.”

‘Very diverse’

Debbie Smith of Monee was helping out for the first time on the Day of Service.

Looking around the cafeteria, Smith said she was impressed by the number of people participating.

Channahon Township resort property to get new life as park district space

Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – Just a couple years ago, a half-dozen dilapidated old homes and outbuildings along the DuPage River in Channahon Township were all that was left of a once-vibrant summer resort.

The obscure little road named Chanooka Lane starts behind Channahon’s Three Rivers School on Ford Road, winds by the river and merges with Timberwood Lane.

Now all the homes are gone – some destroyed by fires or ravaged by flooding – and the short gravel lane overgrown with grass looks like it has always been just a walking path.

The few homes and outbuildings that remained until recently were purchased by the Will County Land Use Department as part of a $5.1 million grant designed to aid areas hit hard by the 2008 flooding.

The Channahon Township properties were part of 40 in a buyout program under the state’s Community Develop-

ment Block Grant – Disaster Recovery “Ike” Program. Other properties are in Plainfield along the DuPage River and in Crete Township along Plum Creek.

According to lifelong Chanooka Lane resident Barb Allen, the homes were built as summer cottages for the wealthy, including one former Joliet mayor.

Allen’s home, which was built in the 1930s and owned by her parents, isn’t part of the flood plain and still is standing.

Allen grew up in the house, and it’s the last remaining older home along the lane.

The Channahon Township property was turned over to the Channahon Park District a year ago after the county completed its demolition.

The 10 or so acres eventually will be used for access to the river, fishing and picnics, park district Executive Director Chuck Szoke said. He said there’s no timeline for the land’s use.

More cleanup needs to be done before it opens to the public. The area cannot have any

permanent structures on it because it is in a flood zone.

“The whole purpose of the [grant] program was to remove features that would be damaged by future flooding,” Szoke said. “Our interest in acquiring the open space [is] because it’s contiguous to the river.”

Growing up along the DuPage River was wonderful, said Allen. She had many friends down and around the curve on Chanooka Lane. She recalled hunting fossils on the riverbed and playing Kick the Can until after dark, when her father would drive down and honk his horn to go home.

There was once a skinny footpath along the river through the yards that she and her friends would take to each other’s homes.

“We even had a cool call to let them know we were coming,” Allen said.

While it’s sad that the cottages are gone and the area has undergone such a dramatic change, it was time, she said.

“It got hit by so many floods, after awhile they couldn’t keep [them] up,” Allen said.

JOLIET – Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. said he hopes to see a strong turnout at upcoming open houses that will gauge public opinion about county officials’ plan to shape the region’s long-range transportation plan.

It’s impossible to plan without the community’s input, Walsh Sr. said.

“We create these events for people to have their say.

If they are adamant about something, they need to tell us. If you don’t want to see Peotone-Wilmington Road turned into a four-lane county highway, then that needs to be said,” Walsh Sr. said. “If you think there needs to be more trains on the Heritage Corridor line through Lockport, then we need to hear that.”

Dubbed Will Connects 2040, the long-range plan is all about linking transportation with economic development and jobs while also supporting road infrastructure needs and quality of life. Bicycle paths, public transportation and the roadway system will be the focus.

Walsh Sr. urged residents, business owners, bicyclists and transit users to attend one or each of the five open houses hosted by the county’s transportation division.

Interactive stations will be available for the public to weigh in.

“We want to know what people are thinking. We want everybody to come out and give their testimony, thoughts and ideas,” Walsh Sr. said.

growth, he said. And that poses serious challenges, he said, noting the dynamic of passenger cars with semitrailers.

Online survey

Walsh urged those who can’t attend to fill out an online transportation survey launched last week, which serves as a follow-up to the survey completed last year.

The survey is accessible through the project website at www.WillConnects2040. org.

The new survey asks participants to rank transportation projects. Another section asks participants if they believe the county needs a new revenue source for transportation and whether the county’s RTA funds should be dedicated for transportation.

The survey also asks whether roadways and bridges should be tolled and whether the county should bond out to pay for transportation projects.

Plainfield village trustees gathered in a special board meeting to approve a $34,500 contract with GovHR USA to recruit for the two positions after former village planner Michael Garrigan, who served the planning department in a directorial capacity, left for a similar job with the village of Antioch.

“With Michael’s departure, we looked at this because [the planning director] is very much a front-facing and important position,” Village Administrator Brian Murphy said.

Village Planner Jonathan Proulx and Murphy are handling the planning director’s responsibilities while GovHR searches for a replacement.

Murphy said the village might also bring in some interim staff partnerships with private consulting firms.

Murphy said most planned developments and projects will continue, but any formal progress on the potential Route 30 tax increment financing district likely will hold until a director is hired.

For some, winter weather doesn’t just make them feel sad – it gives them SAD, or seasonal affective disorder.

The disorder is experienced during late fall or early winter, according to the Mayo Clinic.

It wears off when the weather becomes sunnier in the spring and summer.

The symptoms of fall and winter SAD – people can experience it other seasons – include irritability, tiredness, oversleeping, weight gain and social problems.

Mental health experts in Will and Grundy counties cite several remedies and resources for people whose sensitivity to the winter season extends beyond cold temperatures.

Light therapy

One remedy is through light.

Joseph Troiani, Will County behavioral health programs director, said he knows one woman who struggles with minor SAD. She will leave her interior and exterior Christmas decorations up through March, he said.

“In many ways, it’s her own version of light therapy,” he said.

people with SAD by causing chemical changes in the brain that lift their mood and ease other symptoms, according to Mayo Clinic.

For people who can afford the drive or the plane ticket, they can visit sunnier places during the winter.

Troiani said he knows some colleagues will vacation in warmer climates with more sunshine every four to six weeks to manage symptoms of SAD. “By breaking up the winter, it takes the edge off the depression,” he said.

With winter comes shortened hours of daylight and that impacts people who respond well to sunshine, said Susan Hudson, Grundy County mental health and substance abuse division director.

“I think a lot of times people just respond chemically

to the nutrients in sunshine during the winter months,” she said.

Support system

Hudson and Troiani said for some who have chronic depression, the symptoms of the disorder can intensify during the winter. Troiani said SAD is a subcategory of depression.

If SAD symptoms are severe enough, people can benefit from antidepressant treatment, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Hudson said during winter, some don’t want to go out, and are isolated and experience reduced social contact with others.

The loneliness can cause depression and she recommends those people either keep contact with friends and families or join a support group, which doesn’t have to be for SAD. They also can join online support groups, too, she said.

If the support is not enough, she said they may need counseling.

For counseling, people can visit Catholic Charities, which serves Joliet and Morris, she said. They also can visit the Institute for Personal Development in Joliet and Morris and Crossroads Counseling Services in Morris.

People also can visit the health departments in Grundy and Will counties for counseling.

A Lockport man has died after driving a snowmobile into a tree Saturday in Oneida County, Wisconsin.

Paul Burger, 45, was operating the snowmobile, according to a news release from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.

A 911 call was placed reporting the crash at 6:16 p.m.

Saturday, the release stated.

The incident occurred on a trail parallel to Route 47 North, south of Wolf Road.

The Oneida County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are continuing to investigate the events surrounding Burger’s death.

JOLIET – Minor injuries were sustained early Monday morning in a crash on Interstate 80 in Joliet.

A car and a semitrailer were involved in the incident at 5:40 a.m. on eastbound I-80

near Center Street, according to Illinois State Police trooper Shelley Cox. One person was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center with minor injuries, Cox said.

Cox was unable to provide further information on how the crash occurred or whether anyone involved was charged.

Joliet hotel among meeting places in trafficking ring

CHICAGO – A Joliet hotel was one of many meeting places for a sex trafficking operation run by two members of a Chicago-area rap group, according to federal authorities.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced Friday in a news release that Samuel Nichols, 30, formerly of Chicago, and Charles Fears, 22, of Chicago, were each charged with one count of engaging in sex trafficking by force, fraud and coercion, according to a criminal complaint and affidavit filed in the U.S. District Court of Chicago.

Nichols and Fears are members of a rap group called Hit Squad.

The pair recruited females, including minors, to engage in a commercial sex business, according to the complaint.

Meetings with customers primarily took place in motels in various suburbs, including Red Roof Inn in Joliet.

Other meetings occurred in hotels in Naperville, Downers Grove, Schaumburg, Lansing, Harvey and Alsip.

The complaint states that after performing sex acts for money, the women and girls gave the proceeds to Nichols and Fears. The two allegedly abused the females who worked for them and used drugs and alcohol to coerce them into committing sex acts.

Fears is scheduled for a detention hearing Friday and Nichols was arrested in Tennessee.

Both face a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years and a maximum sentence of life in prison.

OBITUARIES THOMAS M. FEEHAN Thomas M. Feehan “Tommy,” age 57.

Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, after retiring to sleep the night before, Tommy awoke in the presence of the Lord following complications arising from a pulmonary condition.

Born in Joliet and a lifelong Joliet area resident. Attended Northern Illinois University and a graduate of Joliet Catholic High School, Class of 1976.

Preceded by his father, the Honorable Thomas L. Feehan (2000).

Survived by his wife, Linda (nee Daniels) Feehan of Joliet; his mother, Beverly (nee Long) Feehan of Joliet; two sisters, Colleen (Ron) Richardson of Chicago and Kathy (Craig) George of Andover, MA; two brothers, Brian Feehan of Connecticut and Kevin (Gina) Feehan of Naperville; three nieces, Kelly George, Caitlin George and Molly Feehan; seven nephews, Patrick Grizzard, Michael (Cory) Grizzard, Kevin Grizzard, Brian George, Christopher George, Brendan Feehan and Conor Feehan; and one stepson, Michael Kovacevich. Uncle Bob (the late Marilyn) Long and Uncle Joe (Marilyn) Feehan also survives.

Gerald F. Spesia “Jeep,” age 75, of Wilmington, and formerly Joliet, died peacefully in his sleep Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016, at his home.

He was born Feb. 29, 1940, to the

late Antoinette (nee Benetti) and Anthony Spesia Jr. in Joliet, where he was raised and educated, a graduate of Joliet Catholic High School, Class of 1958 and member of the 1958 state championship golf team. He retired from Metropolitan Life Insurance Company after 20 years of service and earning several top salesman awards. Jeep also retired from Laborers Local #75 in 1997 after 15 years of service.

Jeep was an avid outdoorsman. In his early years, he thoroughly enjoyed water fowl hunting and fishing the Kankakee River for the illusive cat-balls. For the last 24 years, he spent his summers in Oak Harbor, Ohio, pursuing Lake Erie walleye. Jeep seldom ate the walleye he caught.

He gained more joy from delivering his catch to friends and family. He loved his modest “shack” on the river and his friends who visited him there. They would sit back, have one and solve the world’s problems while watching the river flow by. Preceded in death by his father in 1978 and his mother in 2005.

Jeep is survived by his sons, Jeffrey Spesia, Michael Spesia and David (Lisa) Spesia; grandchildren, Fallon (Spesia-Costenero) Torp, Nichole Spesia, Zachary and Abbey Spesia; great-grandchildren, J. Aiden Spesia, Lucy Torp and Nellie Ronning; one brother, Larry Spesia; and a nephew, Nicholas Spesia.

Jeep had a soft heart that was embodied in a hard exterior and he will be missed by all who knew him well.

Visitation for close friends and family will be held Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Road (at Essington Road) Joliet. The Associated Press NEW YORK – Glenn Frey, a rock ’n’ roll rebel from Detroit who journeyed West, co-founded the Eagles and with Don Henley became one of history’s most successful songwriting teams with such hits as “Hotel California” and “Life in the Fast Lane,” has died.

Frey, 67, died of complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia, the band said on its website. He died on Monday in New York. He had fought the ailments for the past several weeks, the band said.

“The Frey family would like to thank everyone who joined Glenn to fight this fight and hoped and prayed for his recovery,” a statement on the band’s website said. “Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community & millions of fans worldwide.”

Guitarist Frey and drummer Henley formed the Eagles in Los Angeles in the early 1970s, along with guitarist Bernie Leadon and bassist Randy Meisner. Their popularity grew through much of the decade, and they embodied for many listeners the

melodic Los Angeles sound despite having no native Californians in the group. Critics often dismissed them as slick and unadventurous, but their blend of mellow ballads and macho rockers, and of pop and folk and country, gave them unusually broad appeal.

Their many hit singles included “Hotel California,” “The Best of My Love,” “Desperado,” “One of These Nights” and “The Long Run,” a prophetic boast from 1979 that they would “go the distance” in the long run.” The impulsive Frey and more cerebral Henley shared songwriting and singing duties, with Frey’s drawling tenor featured on “Heartache Tonight,” “Already Gone” and the group’s breakthrough hit, “Take it Easy.”

Their popularity well outlasted their breakup in 1980 and the 14-year hiatus that followed. Their records remained consistent sellers, and they were a top touring act over the past 20 years even though Frey and Henley were the only remaining original members.

The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and was supposed to have been honored at the Kennedy Center last month, but the appearance was postponed because of Frey’s health problems.

Come March, budget battle to leave Chicago State broke

CHICAGO – Like all of Illinois’ nine public universities, Chicago State University is waiting for long-overdue state funding. Come March, though, the predominantly black school on Chicago’s South Side says it won’t have the money to pay its employees.

The problem at Chicago State is shaping up as a wider higher-education funding crisis because of the six-month budget standoff between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic leaders in the General Assembly. All of Illinois’ public universities have cut spending while they plead with the state to get the money flowing before they have to further – and drastically – cut programs.

Already, the state has stopped the flow of Monetary Award Program grants that many low-income students rely on. Universities so far have been covering grant costs but say they can’t do that indefinitely. And Chicago State, a former teacher’s college that caters to many low-income students, lacks outside resources like a pool of well-off donors that schools such as the University of Illinois can fall back on.

No one knows what will happen if Chicago State’s situation doesn’t change before March – whether classes come to a halt, employees go without pay or students scheduled to graduate in May have to wait.

“Our mission, our challenge right now, is to make sure that doesn’t happen,” university spokesman Tom Wogan said. “I can’t sit here today and tell you exactly how we’re going to do that.”

to arrive with a new state budget in July. At Chicago State, it’s about 30 percent of the operating budget – more than most other state schools. As it is, the school has about $9 million on hand.

By mid-March, it won’t be able to meet its $5 million monthly payroll, Wogan said.

Chicago aldermen approve ordinance on Union Station

CHICAGO – Chicago’s city council has approved an ordinance that will help move Union Station into a next phase of upgrades.

Aldermen last week gave the thumbs-up to a measure that authorizes an intergovernmental agreement between the Chicago Department of Transportation, Metra, the Regional Transportation Authority and Amtrak.

Among the improvements foreseen in the near term are ones expanding the train station’s

concourse and platforms.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel said it’s all part of what he calls an “ambitious plan to modernize Union Station.” He said the city wants to “tap the potential” of the station and make it “an anchor” for economic development.

Elk Grove Village man killed in crash on I-290 in Itasca

ITASCA – Authorities say a 30-year-old suburban Chicago man has died in a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 290.

The Illinois State Police reported that the Elk Grove Village man was driving on the I-290 eastbound ramp toward Thorndale Avenue in Itasca shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday when his vehicle veered off the ramp, struck construction barrels and hit a 20-foot box trailer that was parked on the shoulder in a construction area.

The Itasca Fire Department and

the DuPage County coroner’s office said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation is ongoing.

Barrington man facing charges in wife’s death

WAUKEGAN – A Barrington man accused of killing his wife after a fight over a coffee maker is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing next month.

Sixty-five-year-old Larry R. Lotz is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of 59-year-old Karen Lotz.

Karen Lotz, a longtime employee at Harper College in Palatine, was shot multiple times in the couple’s home early Friday. She later died at a hospital.

Police said Larry Lotz admitted in a videotaped statement that he shot his wife after the couple argued about him leaving the coffee maker on.

Lotz is due in Lake County circuit court Feb. 8. He’s being held on $3 million bond.

Body pulled from ruins of house fire in central Illinois

LATHAM – Authorities in central Illinois are trying to identify a body found in the ruins of a house fire near the small village of Latham in Logan County.

The Decatur Herald and Review reported the body was pulled from a bedroom after a house fire early Sunday. Latham Fire Protection District Chief Kenny Crosier said “fire was coming out of everywhere” when firefighters arrived at the scene.

The newspaper reported the body was so badly burned that officials couldn’t immediately determine a gender or age.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Military releases account of sailors’ Iran detention

WASHINGTON – In its first official account of Iran’s seizure and subsequent release of 10 U.S. sailors in the Persian Gulf, the U.S. military said Monday the only items found missing from their two recovered boats were SIM cards for two satellite phones.

But key questions, such as why the sailors had deviated from their planned route to enter Iranian territorial waters, remain unanswered in the account released by U.S. Central Command.

It’s calling the description a preliminary timeline of the events of Jan. 12 and 13.

“A Navy command investigation initiated Jan. 14 will provide a more complete accounting of events,” Central Command said.

The investigation will focus on the U.S. sailors’ treatment while in custody, including any interrogation by Iranian personnel, the command said.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter said last week while visiting Central Command headquarters in Florida that the boat crews had “misnavigated.”

Calls for boycott of Oscars grow over lack of diversity

NEW YORK – Calls for a boycott of the Academy Awards are growing over the Oscars’ second straight year of all-white acting nominees, as Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith each said Monday that they will not attend this year’s ceremony.

In a lengthy Instagram post, Lee said he “cannot support” the “lily white” Oscars. Noting that he was writing on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Lee – who in November was given an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards – said he was fed up: “Forty white actors in two years and no flava at all,” he wrote. “We can’t act?!”

In a video message on Facebook, Pinkett Smith also said she wouldn’t attend or watch the Oscars in February. Pinkett Smith said it was time for people of color to disregard the Academy Awards.

“Begging for acknowledgement, or even asking, diminishes dignity and diminishes power,” she said.

Bitter cold strikes Northern Plains, Great Lakes regions The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – The arctic air mass that froze water pipes in Minnesota this weekend is sticking around in some parts of the upper Midwest.

El Nino brought about a mild winter at the beginning, but a blast of dangerously cold temperatures moved east across the Northern Plains and Great Lakes on Sunday.

Temperatures bottomed out at 36 degrees below in Fosston in northwest Minnesota. It was so cold in western Minnesota that traffic lights went dark Sunday morning in Montevideo when a transformer blew, and in northern Minnesota, one homeowner’s bid to thaw pipes caused a fire that led to $37,000 in damage, WDIO-TV reported.

Many cities sought to ensure no one succumbed to the cold. The Indianapolis Star reported that the state Department of Homeland Security would send anyone needing shelter from the weather Sunday and Monday to a Salvation Army facility.

But in Wisconsin, authorities said a 21-year-old woman likely died of exposure to subzero temperatures in Milwaukee; medical examiners said she was apparently intoxicated when she left

a house party. Surveillance video showed she collapsed outside of a residence and a passer-by found her.

Snow accompanied the drop in temperatures in northern and western Michigan, where up to 16 inches of snow fell over 24 hours in Honor and Traverse City received 10 inches. A march in honor of Martin Luther King Day was canceled in Grand Rapids because of road conditions.

Some reprieve from the cold is expected in the Midwest later in the week, with Chicago expecting to jump into the comparatively balmy 30s by Thursday. But the sub-freezing temperatures were moving eastward, the National Weather Service said, taking aim at the Ohio Valley and areas of the Appalachians.

Most UK lawmakers oppose banning Trump

LONDON – Donald Trump doesn’t have many fans in Britain’s Parliament.

But a debate among lawmakers on calls to ban Trump from the country revealed little appetite to close Britain’s doors to the provocative Republican U.S. presidential contender.

During a three-hour debate Monday, legislators from Britain’s main parties stood to call Trump an attention-seeker, a demagogue and a fool. Many, though, argued that he should not be stifled or banned.

“While I think this man is crazy, while I think this man has no valid points to make, I will not be the one to silence his voice,” said Conservative lawmaker Tom Tugendhat.

Parliament took up the topic after half a million people signed a petition calling for Trump to be excluded over his call for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the U.S. in the wake of extremist violence. Trump has also claimed that some areas of Britain are so radicalized that police fear for their lives.

Responsiveness to community needs

Joliet Junior College will celebrate its 115th anniversary this year. That’s right – it was in 1901 that our founders, J. Stanley Brown and William Rainey Harper, started the first public community college in the country right here in Joliet.

We’ve gone from six students then to a total 38,000 credit-seeking and lifelong learning students today.

Our mission has remained relatively the same: to provide local access to quality higher education at an accessible cost.

Over time, however, our focus has evolved to include workforce development opportunities and business and industry training. Shifting economies, industries and technologies have encouraged us to develop programs to train students for in-demand jobs in our area.

One of the prime examples of this at work is our new Operations Engineering and Technician Program, which launched in the fall of 2015. This new technical program leads graduates directly to local careers in the petrochemical, nuclear and manufacturing industries, responding to industry growth and an increasing number of retirees in these areas.

Collaboration to get this program off the ground was crucial, and I’m proud to share the success with state Sen. Sue Rezin and several local employers. Our partnerships with business and industry are critical. Because we engage in productive dialogue with our external partners and use their valuable feedback and insight, our curriculum gives JJC students the skills necessary to match what our area employers need.

I would like to personally thank the following industry partners who worked with us to develop the OET curriculum: Aux Sable Liquid Products, Exelon (Braidwood, Dresden and LaSalle Stations), Lyondell-

The international energy company TransCanada has donated $55,000 to buy modern equipment. Exelon has provided two $1,000 scholarships this spring semester to students in the program.

Students in the program already have hands-on internships waiting for them with Exelon, Lyondell, Starcon and Manhattan Mechanical, just to name a few.

Since it started, the OET program has received a formal congressional recognition in October 2015 by U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger as well as the 2015 Illinois Council of Community College Administrators Innovation Award.

As we enter our 115th year, what remains important to us is that our students have opportunities for stable, satisfying careers and that our district companies have access to educated and skilled employees, prepared to succeed in their chosen field.

Payoff for budgetary impasse not worth price being paid

A lot of folks have taken to calling Bruce Rauner “Governor 1 Percent” because of his immense personal wealth.

Rauner told the Chicago Sun-Times during the 2014 campaign he was in the top one-tenth of one percent of income earners.

But, right now, anyway, he ought to be referred to as “Governor 1.4 percent.”

Why? Stay with me a bit and I’ll explain.

I sat down for an interview last week with Rauner. As with just about every reporter, Rauner blamed House Speaker Michael Madigan for stifling his beloved Turnaround Agenda. The governor said he was “frustrated” with Madigan for saying his anti-union, pro-business reforms were “unrelated to the budget.”

“For example,” Rauner said, “if we can get business regulatory change so I can recruit manufacturer’s here and more transportation companies here, and more businesses here, we can generate billions of new revenue without raising tax rates. That’s directly tied to the budget.”

“Billions?” I asked.

“Billions,” he replied, while promising to send me a detailed analysis.

A few days later, his staff emailed me a memo the governor had sent to lawmakers last fall. You can see it yourself at CapitolFax.com/turnaround.

But the memo didn’t really say much of anything about revenues, other than if the governor could get Illinois to “average” levels of unemployment and Gross State Product and if the governor could stop the migration of Illinoisans to other states, his agenda would produce $510 million in additional revenues.

That ain’t “billions.”

And although $510 million is nothing to sneeze at, it won’t even cover the interest on the

governmental savings in that “billions” remark.

So, let’s go back to the Rich memo.

Joliet Central defeats rival Joliet West

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet West girls basketball coach John Placher knew just what Joliet Central had in store for West when the rivals met in Monday’s MLK Day of Hoops contest at Central’s gym.

But trying to slow down the duo of Monica Barefield and Morgan Jones proved to be different issues for the Tigers in the SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue contest.

The seniors combined to score 40 points and helped the

Steelwomen build up a big lead before they fended off a late Tiger challenge to claim a 58-48 victory.

While both squads have improved their play throughout the season, it was Central (8-11, 3-4) who showed more signs of consistency than West (7-11, 3-4) in this matchup.

“We did okay,” Central coach Brian Reed said. “We left a lot of points out there due to missed free throws and layups, and also we gave West a lot of points. We’ve been stressing the defensive end the last couple of weeks,

but it’s been a tough four days for us. We had tough games against Bolingbrook, TF South and West and all three were very physical, but the girls pulled out two of the three, so that’s good.

“I told them that we have to pull out some wins, since seedings for the regionals is coming up. Some teams are hitting their stride, but we’re not there yet and hopefully we will be in the next week or so. We have eight seniors, and they’re realizing that this is the final stretch, so they’ve got the mindset that they’re

going to work hard and play for each other, and they’ve been really good the last couple of games.”

Barefield supplied nine of her game-high 21 points in the opening quarter to help the Steelwomen claim an 18-12 lead at the initial break. Jones (eight rebounds) scored five of her 19 points in the second quarter as Central built up a 30-22 halftime advantage.

“This was a good win for our team,” Barefield said.

“We knew that they were going to come for us just because we’re rivals. But we kept our

composure, worked the ball around, took our time and took good shots and we were able to come out with the win.

“We’ve improved a lot. At the beginning of the season we weren’t working together or communicating. But dayafter-day at practice, we’ve started talking more and working together better. Communicating is the key to winning basketball games, as well as stepping up on defense.

Anyone can score but defense has to be our main thing.”

Plainfield North rides ‘D’ past Bolingbrook

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Plainfield North came into Monday’s MLK Day of Hoops at Joliet Central knowing it needed defense and rebounding if it was going to beat Bolingbrook.

The Tigers were strong in both areas, with excellent freethrow shooting a bonus, as they held off the Raiders, 53-43.

“It was a very good defensive effort,” Tigers coach Bob Krahulik said. “We did a great job helping on their big man (Zachery Grady). Kyle (Speas) did a nice job banging on him.

Once they got into an halfcourt set, we did a great job defensively.”

The Tigers survived their own off-shooting night in the process. North (11-7) was 15 of

44 from the floor, 34.1 percent.

Kevin Krieger, who had been averaging 34 points over the previous five games, hit only four of 16 as the athletic Raiders blocked a handful of his shots from inside.

However, Krieger still finished with 23 points as he made 12 of 13 free throws, including 7 of 8 in the fourth quarter. The Tigers made 18 of 22 from the line, 13 of 16 in the fourth quarter.

“Kevin will find a way to get to the line,” Krahulik said.

Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said that in the Raiders’ previous seven losses, six were games where they had the lead in the final few minutes.

This time, Bolingbrook got as close as 42-37 with 2:30 left.

But the Raiders were hurt by their own free-throw shooting

– they made 3 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter and 6 of 16 overall – and rebounding.

North outrebounded Bolingbrook, 9-2, in the third quarter and 20-8 in the second half.

Krieger finished with seven boards.

“We emphasized the boards,” Krahulik said.

The 6-foot-6 Krieger spent much of the day in a duel with Bolingbrook’s 6-6 junior forward, Nana Wiafe-Akenten.

Wiafe-Akenten scored seven early points before settling for 11. He attempted only nine shots.

“He’s a good player,” Krieger said. “I tried to deny him the ball as much as possible.”

Wiafe-Akenten and his teammates also did a good job on Krieger for most of the afternoon, and it became vital

that other Tigers step up offensively. Senior guards Henry Thompson and Richie Elias answered the call.

Thompson hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 12 points. Elias contributed eight points, including 4 of 5 free throws in the fourth quarter, and did his usual bang-up job taking care of the ball in the face of pressure.

“We’ve got guys who if they hit one shot, they get it going,” Krieger said. “It makes it easier for me when we get everyone rolling.”

“Richie Elias is the key to our team,” Krahulik said.

“He does so much. He is our only true point guard against pressure. And Henry Thompson gives us another scoring option, which is big.”

The Tigers’ biggest game this week is the Friday battle against Southwest Prairie leader Minooka. However, Monday’s win also carried significance.

“This was needed for (sectional) seeding purposes,” Krahulik said, anticipating a wide-open sectional. “Every game we play from here on is for seeding purposes.”

“It was a real good with seeding meeting coming up,” Krieger said.

Devon Sams scored five of his nine points in the fourth quarter for Bolingbrook.

Freshman guard Joseph Yesufu scored all of his six in the second half, and Antowine Locke chipped in six off the bench. Grady’s only five points came in the third quarter.

“It started in the locker room and then we came out here focused and ready to play,” Jones said. “We have a lot more players contributing since the season began, so that’s helped us a lot. The players on this team like to work hard, in and out of practice so I think we’ll be fine.”

After falling behind by 20 points early in the final quarter, the Tigers used a 9-0 run, with five of those coming from Kierra Tyler (10 points) to close to within nine points.

They narrowed the gap to nine points two more times but could get no closer.

“When you let two girls dominate you like that, it’s hard to beat them,” Placher said. “We knew that going in and tried to do some things to prevent that, but it just didn’t happen.

“Our girls had really been

executing well in the last couple of games, but tonight, we struggled a little. Once they believe that what we’re trying to do works, then we’ll be a pretty good team. The coaching staff also has to realize that it’s baby steps and that it’s not going to happen overnight, and that’s what we’re trying to do through the whole program.”

JOLIET – After losing three straight games and five of six, the Joliet West boys basketball team felt it was time to refocus.

The Tigers did that Monday afternoon in the MLK Day of Hoops at Joliet Central. They managed a 31-21 halftime lead and held off Oswego, 61-55.

“Absolutely, we needed a win,” West coach Nick DiForti said. “All the credit, 100 percent, goes to the players. They were not feeling good after we lost the Lockport game (56-50 on Thursday). Our captain, Tyler Johnson, called a meeting, and the kids responded.”

The whole idea from here, DiForti said, “is a one-game championship. We want to be 1-0 every game.”

“The meeting pulled us together,” said junior forward Tabyous Casterberry, who scored 11 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter to help the Tigers (11-6) sew up the victory.

“We fixed all the holes. Everybody is all cool now.”

DiForti changed his starting lineup, with Casterberry and sophomore guard Eddie Creal in the first five. But the 10 kids West followers are accustomed to seeing were in the game at various times.

“We played 10 guys like usual,” DiForti said. “It’s predicated on the style of play that game. We know what most of our guys can do.

“What was nice to see some guys off the bench help out a

during a second quarter when the Tigers outscored Oswego, 16-9, to take the 31-21 halftime lead. Oswego committed eight of its 16 first-half turnovers in that quarter as West’s pressure defense took a toll.

The Tigers were up, 44-35, after three quarters, before Casterberry hit five straight inside shots in the fourth quarter. Oswego got as close as 53-50 with 2:50 left, but a Casterberry dunk and his layup off an assist from Teyvion Kirk helped put it away.

“It felt good to help out,” Casterberry said. “Our point guards got me the ball all the time, they had faith in me.

And our coaches had faith in me, putting me in the game in the last quarter and in the game, period.”

Sophomore guard Mike Smith led West with 14 points.

Casterberry had 13, Trevian Bell 11 and Kirk 10. Creal grabbed five rebounds and Kirk four.

Brice Robinson, Oswego’s 6-foot-7 senior center, led all scorers with 25 points and all rebounders with nine.

dgoss@shawmediacom JOLIET – The Joliet Central boys basketball team has been doing some good things in the SouthWest Suburban Blue battles.

The result is the Steelmen share the league lead with Homewood-Flossmoor entering Friday night’s game at Bolingbrook.

Whether the conference situation had anything to do with what transpired Monday night in the final game of the MLK Day of Hoops at Central is uncertain, but Central coach Jeff Corcoran mentioned it after the Steelmen’s 54-51 loss to Bloom Township.

“We’ve been doing good things in conference games,” Corcoran said. “I don’t know, maybe we came in here overconfident. The fact is, they were more physical than us from the start.”

The Trojans led by as much as 16-6 in the early going.

Central (8-7) got it down to 17-15 when Taquan Sims ended the first quarter with the first of his four 3-point baskets.

Jomarre McNair’s traditional three-point play tightened the difference to 30-27 at halftime.

Baskets by Treveon Ward and Cameron Blackmon to open the third quarter got the Steelmen their first and only lead, 31-30. That’s when Bloom embarked on a 10-point run to lead 40-31.

“You can’t give up 10-0 runs,” Corcoran said. “You have to stop them.”

Central made a final push, getting within 52-50 with 2:02 left. The Steelmen had two opportunities to tie because of a McNair steal and another Bloom turnover but misfired on short shots each time, and Bloom held on.

The major thorn in Central’s side was Bloom senior forward Jamal Parks, who led all scorers with 28 points and all rebounders with 11.

Sims finished with 14 points and Jose Grubbs chipped in 13 for Central. Malik Fuller scored nine to go with 10 rebounds.

“It hurt us that Malik had some foul trouble and sat out almost the entire second quarter,” Corcoran said. “He had been doing a pretty good job early on that kid (Parks).”

Oklahoma back on top for 1st time in 26 years

Oklahoma is No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 for the first time since the final two weeks of the 1989-90 season.

The Sooners took the top spot in style, getting all 65 firstplace votes from the national media panel.

They are the first unanimous No. 1 since Kentucky did it for 12 polls last season.

This is the sixth time Oklahoma has been No. 1, moving

the Sooners into a tie for 29th place on the all-time list with Memphis, Missouri and Seton Hall. No. 1 on the No. 1 list is UCLA, which was on top for 134 weeks.

The last time the Sooners were No. 1, the top players were Skeeter Henry, Smokey McCoverey and William Davis.

Coached by Billy Tubbs, the Sooners lost to North Carolina in the second round of the NCAA tournament and finished with a 27-5 record.

Oklahoma is the fifth team

to hold the No. 1 spot this season joining North Carolina, Kentucky, Michigan State and Kansas.

With two members of the Big 12 holding the No. 1 spot this season, it marks the first time two teams from the same conference were on top in the same season since Kentucky and Florida of the Southeastern Conference did it in 2013-14.

Duke dropped to No. 20 in this week’s poll and another loss could see the Blue Devils drop out of the Top 25.

CHICAGO – Fans gave Cubs manager Joe Maddon a rock star’s welcome, chanting his name as they greeted him with a standing ovation.

They thanked ownership and management. And they welcomed the newcomers in what felt like a big group hug.

The atmosphere at the team’s annual fan convention last weekend was every bit as upbeat as expected coming off a breakout 97-win season that ended with a trip to the NL Championship Series.

“It’s been special,” newly signed pitcher John Lackey said. “We’re excited to be here.”

These are exciting times for a team that finished with the third-best record in baseball – and the third-best record in the NL Central.

With young sluggers such as NL Rookie of the Year Kris Bryant, Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta and Manager of the Year Maddon leading the way, the Cubs ended a fiveyear run of losing seasons and sparked hope that a championship drought dating to 1908 will – at long last – end soon.

One thing they didn’t do this offseason was stand pat.

The Cubs have been as busy as any team, signing outfielder Jason Heyward ($184 million, eight years) and Lackey ($32 million, two years) away from division rival St. Louis. They also landed infielder Ben Zobrist ($56 million, four years) and traded Starlin Castro to the New York Yankees for pitcher Adam Warren.

“We chose you,” said Heyward, who turned down more lucrative offers.

The chance to help a team with a promising young core end an historic drought were big draws for the newcomers as was the unique – and changing – environment at Wrigley Field.

There still is plenty of work to do.

The Cubs exchanged arbitration proposals Friday with Arrieta and hope to reach an agreement before a potential hearing, even though they remain far apart. Arrieta is asking for $13 million. The Cubs

Then there is president of baseball operations Theo Epstein, entering the fifth and final season of his contract.

Epstein said he has no plans to leave anytime soon and that the players’ contracts need to be taken care of before his.

“There’s no holdup, there’s no drama,” chairman Tom Ricketts said when a fan asked if a deal will be completed by the start of spring training.

“The fact is that generally we’re on the same page. We’ve been working on other stuff.

It’s a busy time for the business side, with the Cubs’ TV deals expiring in 2019 and the stadium renovation ongoing.

The Cubs are considering starting a new regional network and would need a twoyear lead time to launch it, president of business operations Crane Kenney said.

Meanwhile, the multiyear transformation of baseball’s second-oldest ballpark that began last winter after years of legal wrangling with the neighboring rooftop businesses continues to move along.

The Cubs, who own 10 of the 16 rooftops, installed new bleacher sections in left and right field along with two gigantic video boards last year.

The most important change

for the team this offseason is the addition of a 30,000-square foot home clubhouse area that will house lockers, training facilities, a player lounge, an auditorium, media center and offices.

For fans, a center-field bleacher section also is scheduled to be ready by Opening Day to go with the ones in left and right that opened last season, and 7,000 seats in the leftfield terrace are being replaced this winter. New concrete is being poured and steel beams installed in the ballpark.

Kenney said a plaza the Cubs envision as a sort of town square with farmers markets, concerts, movie nights and an ice skating rink will “come to life” in 2016 and be ready by

the 2017 opener. The coming years will see more changes, including a hotel across the street.

Security at Wrigley is being beefed up.

Kenney said all fans will have to pass through metal detectors next season. He also said the Cubs are working with the city to try to limit game-day traffic on Clark and Addison streets outside the stadium to emergency vehicles, city buses and pedestrians.

“The thing that used to keep me awake all night was the concrete and steel in our ballpark, which we’re fixing,” he said. “The thing that keeps me awake now is thinking about the crazy times we live in.”

Pistons lose cool, Bulls take advantage

The Associated Press AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg dismissed the idea that the Bulls might be better off without Joakim Noah.

“I don’t think you could find one guy in that locker room that would say we’re a better team,” Hoiberg said. “He does so many things.”

The Bulls will face plenty of challenges playing without Noah, but they’re off to a good start after Monday’s 111-101 win over the Detroit Pistons.

Pau Gasol had 31 points and 12 rebounds, and Derrick Rose added 20 points for the Bulls.

Noah dislocated his left shoulder Friday and likely will miss the rest of the season, but the Bulls have had success without him. They improved to 9-2 in 2015-16 when he doesn’t play.

“I’m not going to say that we’re over him or we don’t need him. We need him for sure,” Rose said. “But we’re professionals. We know that once someone goes out, somebody has to step in and do that job, and we believe in everybody on this team.”

Ersan Ilyasova had 19 points and 11 rebounds for Detroit, which was outplayed after taking a 13-point lead in the first quarter. The Pistons also lost their cool, getting called for three technical fouls in the third. Detroit guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope received two of them and was ejected.

Jimmy Butler had 16 points and nine assists for the Bulls.

Detroit shot 68 percent in the first quarter Monday and led 32-26, but the Bulls rallied and led, 56-53, at halftime.

The Bulls scored the first six points of the third, and although the Pistons were able to erase the deficit during that period, they showed constant frustration with the officials.

Caldwell-Pope and Andre Drummond received technicals, and then Caldwell-Pope got another in the final seconds of the quarter and was ejected.

Gasol put the Bulls up by 10

in the fourth with a 3-pointer as the shot clock ran down. Later, with the score 98-91, Gasol appeared trapped beyond the arc with the shot clock running out, but he was fouled by Drummond while attempting a desperation shot, and the Bulls center made all three free throws.

“Fouling him 30 feet from the basket? That’s not a smart move,” Detroit coach Stan Van Gundy said.

Drummond had 13 points and 16 rebounds.

Reserve Aaron Brooks had six points and 10 assists for the Bulls, and Doug McDermott added 11 points.

The Bulls’ reserves outscored Detroit’s, 33-18.

“We started the game pretty well with our starters,” Van Gundy said. “We went to the bench, and the bench didn’t have anything going today. We got crushed with the bench and then after that we just got pretty well taken apart for the rest of the game.”

One area in which Noah’s absence was felt was on the boards, where the Pistons had a 50-38 advantage. The Bulls were outrebounded for the first time in 12 games. The Bulls allowed 20 offensive rebounds but finished only one point behind (1716) in second-chance points.

After a promising start, Detroit finished the game at only 44 percent from the field. Drummond made 3 of 10 free throws.

ANTIBIOTIC-RESISTANT BACTERIA ON THE RISE

Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – It’s estimated that by 2050, more people will die from medicine-resistant infections than from cancer.

How can this be?

The discovery in 1928 of an accidental mold contamination in one of scientist Alexander Fleming’s petri dish bacterial cultures led to decades of lives saved by antibiotics.

Fleming discovered penicillin, a chemical produced by the mold Penicillium notatum that saved generations from being overcome by bacterial infections and led to the discovery of dozens more antimicrobial agents.

However Fleming, in his acceptance speech for the Nobel Prize, warned of bacterial resistance.

“Then there is the danger that the ignorant man may easily underdose himself,” Fleming wrote, “and by exposing his microbes to non-lethal quantities of the drug make them resistant.”

“It’s one of the world’s most pressing public health problems,” said Morris Hospital infectious disease specialist Dr. John Bolden.

“These resistant bacteria can cause illnesses that we used to be able to treat. ... Some of these gram negative bacteria that we used to be able to easily treat with penicillin are causing dangerous infections now.”

Infections by bacteria that have become immune to the effects of antibiotics have led to a health crisis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 2 million people

Many more die from other conditions that were complicated by an antibiotic-resistant infection.

The brunt of the problem is our own fault. About half of antibiotic use in humans and much of its use in animals is “unnecessary and inappropriate and makes everyone less safe,” the CDC reports.

Viruses, Bolden explained, cannot be killed by antibiotics. Only bacteria can.

Colds, the flu and many sinus infections and respiratory infections such as bronchitis are unchanged by antibiotics.

They normally go away on their own, Bolden said.

But doctors still are pre-

scribing antibiotics without taking cultures to determine if an infection is truly a bacterial one, and patients are still demanding them.

“Physicians feel they’re being pressured by patients,” Bolden said, “and a lot of viral or fungal infections are being treated with antibiotics, which is not appropriate.”

Bolden said more education is needed for both patients and physicians.

How bacteria beat antibiotics

According to the CDC, bacterial resistance comes about through natural selection.

Bacteria do not “design” ways to get around an antibiotic.

When a patient doesn’t take a full dose of the medicine or quits it early, the weak

bacteria are killed, and the strong ones survive, creating generations of super-bacteria.

So when their bacterial competitors in the gut are killed off, according to the CDC, these super-bacteria have the perfect environment to thrive, and further treatment with that particular antibiotic won’t harm them.

Another major contributor to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, Bolden said, is improper use of antibiotics in animals.

Poultry, beef and other meats that come from animals treated with antibiotics, he explained, may be contaminated with antibiotic-resistant germs.

“That increases your risk of getting an antibiotic-resistant infection down the road,” Bolden said.

Know more Many people associate “antibiotic-resistant” bacteria with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, which is responsible for a range of illnesses, from skin and wound infections to pneumonia and bloodstream infections that can cause sepsis and death.

But antibiotic resistant bacteria also include: • Clostridium difficile – Life-threatening diarrhea • Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae – Bloodstream infections • Vancomycin-resistant enterococcus – Bloodstream infections, surgical site infections, urinary tract infections • Multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa – Pneumonia, bloodstream infections, urinary tract infections, surgical site infections • Campylobacter – Diarrhea (often bloody), fever, abdominal cramps and sometimes serious complications such as temporary paralysis • Multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter – Pneumonia or bloodstream infections in critically ill patients • Drug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae – Bacterial pneumonia and meningitis, bloodstream infections, ear and sinus infections.

• Drug-resistant salmonella – Diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, abdominal cramps.

Some infections spread to the blood and can have life-threatening complications.

• Drug-resistant Shigella – Diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, abdominal pain.

Fourth Breast Intentions Mardi Gras will aid breast cancer patients The HERALD-NEWS

JOLIET – Jazz and fun will be in the air when Breast Intentions of Illinois hosts its fourth annual “Mardi Gras Madness” program to raise money to help offset daily living costs for breast cancer patients and their families.

The event will be from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Feb. 5 in the ballroom at Joliet’s magnificent Jacob Henry Mansion, 15 S. Richards St. in Joliet. Renowned Chicago-area jazz vocal group Nova Soul will provide the evening’s entertainment.

The event also will include a photo booth, appetizers, a cash

bar, raffle baskets and split the pot raffles. Casual attire is requested.

MORRIS – Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers recently honored 137 employees celebrating milestones in their years of service during a dinner held at the Morris Country Club.

This year’s top honorees were Cathy Lowery, a sterile processing technician in the surgery department, and Anita Schultz, a licensed practical nurse from 2 East, both with 40 years of service.

At the dinner, Kim Landers, vice President of patient care at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers, welcomed the guests and introduced board members Kelly Beaty, Rod Engstrom and Dr. John Roth. As board chair, Beaty thanked the honorees for their dedicated service.

After dinner, President and CEO Mark Steadham gave his congratulatory remarks. Each honoree received a long stem rose and a Grundy County Chamber of Commerce gift certificate based on their years of service.

A good bridge partnership is like that. In this deal, East had to be understanding of her partner’s losing opening lead. Look at the West hand.

What did she lead against six clubs after the given sequence?

The first two rounds of the bidding were fine. But over three diamonds, South should have bid three no-trump to show her heart stoppers.

If South had done that, North would have had an unenviable decision. Probably he would have insisted on a slam contract one way or another, but might have only invited with four no-trump; though that would have been cautious, despite the singleton club.

At the table, when South jumped a second time in clubs, North raised to six clubs.

From the auction, it sounded as if South did not have a heart control, because she had not bid three no-trump.

So, understandably, West led the heart seven.

Declarer won with her jack and planned to draw two rounds of trumps, then try to discard her diamond losers on dummy’s top spades.

When the club queen obligingly dropped under the ace, South claimed 13 tricks: seven clubs, three hearts and three spades.

If West had led a diamond, declarer would have had to avoid a trump loser.

The percentage play is a first-round finesse, which would have been fatal here.

abdominal muscles. Take a slow, deep breath. The air coming in through your nose should move downward into your lower belly.

That, in turn, should cause your abdomen to expand.

You should feel it. Now breathe out through your mouth. Your abdomen will get smaller.

Once you’re comfortable with diaphragmatic breathing, move on to breath focus. As you sit comfortably with your eyes closed, combine your breathing with helpful imagery and a focus phrase to help you relax. Imagine that the air you breathe in washes peace and calm into your body. Imagine that the air leaving your body carries tension and anxiety away.

As you inhale, think to yourself, “Breathing in peace and calm.” And as you exhale, think, “Breathing out tension and anxiety.” Start by doing 10 minutes of breath focus.

Gradually work up to sessions that are about 15 to 20 minutes long.

There are other ways to trigger the relaxation response besides breath focus.

For example, there is a technique called progressive muscle relaxation, and one called autogenic training. None has proven superior to the other. Most of my patients (and friends) who have tried to induce the relaxation response have used breath focus.

Does this sound a little weird, a little loosey-goosey? Maybe it does, but it sure helps some of my patients and friends. And it’s simple -- there’s no risk and it’s free. We can’t say that about tranquilizer medicines.

Dear Dr. K: A friend recommended a technique called “breath focus” to help me deal with stress.

Dear Reader: Breath focus is a simple yet powerful technique that can elicit the “relaxation response,” a state of profound peace and rest. The relaxation response was popularized by my colleague at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Herbert Benson. It has given all of us a weapon against stress.

That’s valuable because stress can take a toll on body and mind. Over time, stress can contribute to high blood pressure, depression, diabetes and other health problems. The good news is that by regularly practicing relaxation techniques such as breath focus, you can reduce the negative effects of stress.

When you breathe in, the muscles between your ribs pull them outward, which expands your lungs and causes your diaphragm to move downward. The diaphragm is a strong sheet of muscle that divides the chest from the abdomen.

When it drops downward, pressing against abdominal organs, this also expands your lungs and sucks air through your mouth and nose into your lungs. As you breathe out, the diaphragm moves back upward, pressing against your lungs and helping to expel carbon dioxide waste from your body. Deep abdominal breathing slows the heartbeat and can lower or stabilize blood pressure.

In order to practice breath focus, you must first learn proper diaphragmatic breathing.

Dear Abby : Our granddaughter, “Kim,” is a senior in high school.

She wants to study in Europe next year to improve her skills in a second language.

Neither she nor her parents can afford the $20,000 or more this will cost. She is also “boy crazy.” Another worry is the threat of terrorism and her safety.

Kim’s grandmother and I see more negatives than positives in this possibility.
