Maple Street – (Marley) Mokena The town of Marley is located on a short rise adjacent to Marley Creek, which originally was named North Folk Creek, which flows to Hickory Creek in nearby New Lenox Township.

Prior to settlement in the early 19th century, much of the site was covered with forest. The triangular piece of land that was first formed by the Wabash, St. Louis, and Pacific Railway tracks on the north and Maple Road on the south.

The ownership of this land originally can be traced to several early speculators, including Myron Nathan Marshall and Archibald Allerton, before it was divided up and sold to George Haley.

In 1880, George L. Haley hired F.M. Wood of Streator to layout and survey the triangular 16-acre tract of land which soon would be known as Marley.

Initially, this subdivision with 111 lots was named Maple Street, until the name Marley was chosen for the local post office.

Maple Road runs eastwest through Marley and the maple trees located in sections along the north side of the road continue to define the early boundary of this community.

The then photograph shows a view looking west along Maple Road around 1900, and the now photograph shows a similar view today.

Police chiefs start in Bolingbrook, Lemont and Manhattan

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com Three new chiefs took over local police departments last week.

They all came from different backgrounds before heading the Bolingbrook, Manhattan and Lemont police departments. They all said getting close to their communities will be a priority.

Tom Ross moved up within the Bolingbrook Police Department. Joseph Wazny came to Manhattan from Evanston. Marc Maton left the state police to take over in Lemont.

“Chief” Ross is officially the director of public safety, also overseeing Bolingbrook’s fire department, since the fire chief and police chief positions were combined two years ago. Bolingbrook has 113 sworn police officers and 84 sworn firefighters.

“I’m clearly not an expert on firefighting, but administratively, issues with personnel, contracts, human resources are the same,” said Ross, who was deputy police chief for six years.

When Wazny started his career, he said he thought “public safety officers” would take over the duties of both departments.

“That was the trend everyone thought was coming, but it didn’t turn out that way,” he said.

Community policing background

Wazny grew up in Crete and was a firefighter there from 1981 to 1987. He also was a paramedic before working for the University of Chicago, Macomb and Evanston police departments.

Manhattan has nine fulltime police officers and six who are part time, which Wazny acknowledged is quite different from sometimes supervising Evanston’s 164 officers

“I think I was selected [in Manhattan] because of my background in community policing,” Wazny said. “A genuine partnership is critical when things don’t go well and there are already ways police and the community engage each other.”

Ross agrees community policing is necessary.

“We’ve seen how other communities are polarized, but taking care of small issues helps [everyone] so they don’t become big issues,” he said.

“You could say something ‘isn’t a problem for the police,’ but if people are calling us, it is a police problem.”

Maton, a 28-year veteran with the state police, said he

Marc Maton, Lemont police chief will focus on finding out what issues are the most important to the community during his first months in Lemont.

“I’m going to do a ridealong with every officer,” he said.

Great changes ahead

Maton said he sought the Lemont position because he believes law enforcement and society are re-evaluating how

officers train and what technology is used.

“I think we’re on the threshold of some great changes, like those of the early ’70s. And I think that innovations will come from small to mid-size departments,” Maton said.

Kevin McCarthy, who retires from Bolingbrook on Friday after 31 years as a police officer, remembered Route 53 was a two-lane road when he

started. Ross, on the force for 27 years, noted he works in a building that’s now located on the fields where he once played baseball as a kid.

“When we started, there were maybe two or three [police] cars out at a time. There were nothing but cornfields west of 53. Now this isn’t even the geographic center of town,” Ross said.

Ross said he’s not planning any major changes from McCarthy’s tenure. The outgoing chief said one of his biggest accomplishments was making sure someone was a good fit to replace him.

“I think as a team we’ve done a good job. That’s why everyone’s moving up,” McCarthy said.

Bridal parties attend expo at Rialto

JOLIET – For anyone planning a wedding, Sunday’s Bridal Expo at the Rialto Square Theatre was the place to be.

Numerous vendors were on hand offering options, information and samples. There was even a selfie booth and a weddings 101 seminar.

Annette Parker, Rialto’s director of marketing, said the theater tries to add new components every year. This year brides-to-be could register upon entrance and the first 100 were treated to an onstage engagement party with champagne, a swag bag and a chance to win a diamond from David Nelson Jewelers.

Caterers offered samples.

Chef by Request of Lisle offered party trays of cheese and crackers, while Polonia Caterers provided ice cream samples. Many vendors, such as LaCuisine of Hinsdale, have been participating in the expo for a number of years. Others, like Big Bash Caterers, were exhibiting for only its second year. John Mathias, owner of Big Bash and also Big Fish Grille in Channahon, offered samples of his lobster bisque.

Mathias has a custom 18 foot mobile kitchen that he takes to the venue to cook in; some-

thing “no other caterer does” he said.

On hand were two Joliet institutions – Milano Bakery and Kosack’s Black Tie Formalwear. Local parents and grandparents of today’s young brides and grooms are familiar with those names. George Kosack Jr. said his father, George Sr., started the business out of his home in 1948.

He would measure the groom and groomsmen, then drive up to Chicago to get the suits.

Sometime around 1950 he said, he opened a store on Jackson Street. Their current location is on Essington Road.

Milano Bakery, another respected Joliet name, is celebrating its hundredth year.

Started in 1915, it is owned and operated by third-generation DeBenedettis, Mario and Darin, said Lori DeBenedetti, wedding and sales consultant for the bakery.

Chiro Health also was on hand. Kelly Hall, office manager, said they treat the entire body – nervous system, mind set, detox and exercise. With the stress of wedding planning, all these things work together to create a healthy bride, groom, mother or entire wedding party.

Photographers, essential to any wedding, were well represented. Tracy Budzinski of Shorewood has been a photographer for 23 years, focusing on portraits and weddings for the past nine years. She said her clients appreciate her romantic style.

DJs also were on hand to provide entertainment, as was

the Montage Ensemble, a classical string quintet.

Brides-to-be in attendance appreciated having a one-stop wedding planning event. Ashlynn Turner of Channahon will be getting married in May 2016 and has just started to look around. Asked how helpful the event was she held up her swag bag saying, “I have a whole bag full of ideas.”

Her mother, Julie, said she wished there had been

something like this when she got married. She felt the expo made things easier. “Planning a wedding can be overwhelming” and bringing her daughters to the event helped them to see “why planning one takes so long.” Most girls have no idea where to start she added.

The expo helped Myisha Moffet of Joliet finalize some loose ends for her October wedding. She found a hotel for her bridal party and her guests, decided on Milano for her cake and booked With Love Paperie to do her invitations.

With Love is a new paper store in Morris, co managed by Sarah Larson and Bri Willis.

They do custom invitations, thank-you cards and even carry a small line of bridesmaid and flower girl dresses in their store.

A third bride, Melissa Bedolla, was there with her mother, Lucila. Melissa’s engagement photo was featured on the Rialto Facebook page.

It is a picture of her and her fiancé, Jose Alfredo Esquivel, in the Rialto Rotunda.

Her wedding is going to be July 31 at the Rialto. She said she first came to the theater on a field trip when she was in the third grade. “Since then I always knew I wanted to get married here.”

Frankfort water bills go online with new option

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – Frankfort residents will no longer have to mail in a check or visit Village Hall to pay their water bills.

They can now make payments online at frankfortutilities.com. The online water bill payment system went live Dec. 15, with 314 customers signed up as of Friday, said Jeff Cook, the village’s development services director.

He said the village has about 1,100 utility customers.

Village officials plan to alert residents to the new payment option in their January water bills.

Mayor Jim Holland said the online payment system is set up so residents can pay with credit, debit card or electronic check. They also can see how much water they use and check past bills, he said.

“And, of course, people can come to the Village Hall and pay in cash or mail a

check in. We’re just trying to come up with ways more convenient for people in Frankfort to pay their water bills,” he said.

When residents sign up for the system, they also can adjust it to make automatic payments through a checking or savings account.

Water is billed monthly, with a minimum of 2,000 gallons charged to all accounts, village officials said.

Holland said he expects use of the online payment

system to jump drastically in the coming weeks as people know more about it.

Village Trustee Cindy Heath said she supported the system. Based on system data, she said she noticed several people using it on Christmas.

“We need a way to expand some of our services online and this was a way to do it,” she said.

Nearby towns such as Joliet, Shorewood, Crest Hill and New Lenox also offer on-

line water bill payments.

A presentation on the system was made last week at the village’s joint Departmental Operations and Financial Affairs Committee.

Holland said committee members and trustees wanted to see if the system was working, because it hasn’t been marketed yet.

“People like myself have signed up and gotten an account and maneuvered around in it, and it seems to work fine,” he said.

Pierce’s wife: ‘People really liked his work’ Morris man was accomplished as a farrier and fabricator

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Betty Pierce said when she and her husband Jim first moved to Morris, Jim worked various hands-on jobs, including construction and auto repair.

But his first love was always horses, even though Jim had not grown up on a farm.

So Jim obtained the necessary license and embarked on a 30-year career as a farrier, Betty said.

“He was always very gentle with the horses,” Betty said.

“He didn’t believe in jerking and jamming and hitting. A lot of times, he would get a horse that someone else had messed up shoeing. Jim would go and work with the horse and shoe it when other people

had given up.”

Jim didn’t believe in tight schedules, Betty said. While other farriers might quickly shoe a horse and be out the door, Jim never approached a horse too quickly and gave each horse plenty of attention.

“People really liked his work,” Betty said. “I think that was how he got a lot of his customers.”

Betty, who grew up on a Nebraska farm, knew that Jim, as a boy, often visited a farm near his Missouri home and rode horses. Another friend taught Jim to play guitar by ear, and soon Jim was traveling with and playing bass for the Missouri Ramblers Band.

“They did shows on the weekend to entertain the

Betty attended one of those shows and met Jim. The two dated long-distance for two years before they married.

When they bought land in Morris, they acquired a pinto that was a former cow horse, a quarter horse, a horse that was more Shetland than quarter horse and a pony.

“He didn’t like riding them,” Betty said. “He just

liked being around them.”

As a farrier, Jim soon acquired a collection of old shoes and scrap metal – porch railings, ash trays, magazine racks and boot scrapers. Jim also fabricated practical items from wood, including custom gunstocks for his friends and a wall holder for the household oil lamp.

“It kept [the lamp] handy so we wouldn’t have to go around in the dark if we needed it,” Betty said, “because it would be hanging there.”

Mostly, Jim was proud of the horse trailer he built. He used it until his last horse died in 2003. Then Jim kept the trailer in the backyard for storage. He dreamed of repairing it so one of his grandsons could use it for his lawn service business, Betty said.

But that was not to be. Jim retired in 1999. His chronic obstructive pulmonary disease had worsened. Jim could no longer bend down and lift the horses’ feet.

“After that, he tinkered in his shop with metal,” Betty said. “It got to the point where he had to be on oxygen full time. Any exertion was a real effort for him with his breathing.”

Watching Westerns on TV helped pass the time, she said.

So did sitting at the desk and planning projects. Some days, Betty felt as if Jim had moved half his shop into the house.

But he never turned down a friend that needed his help.

Jim was 79 when he died May 31, 2014.

“He’d repair guns for his friends, little things like springs or triggers that were broken or missing. This much he could do,” Betty said. “He appreciated when the guys would come over and ask if he could do something for them.”

All Shorewood parks are open to nonmotorized winter activities, such as cross country skiing, snow-shoeing and winter hiking, said Denise Schmidt, recreation and special event planner for the village.

Channahon and Minooka parks are the same.

There have been recent reports of sledding injuries in other towns, so sledding is at your own risk, said Laurie Musclow, Minooka’s recreation and public relations coordinator.

It’s a good idea to wear a helmet when sledding.

If the cold still holds you back, remember that you need to layer clothing for the best insulation. Avoid cotton as your bottom layer, because it traps moisture on your skin. Finish off with a nylon material to keep out the wind.

If your feet and hands get cold, put on a hat. Even if your head doesn’t feel cold, your body will divert circulation away from fingers and toes to warm it.

Drink plenty of fluids – being dehydrated makes it harder to stay warm. Eat before heading outdoors to play. Your body will generate heat as it burns fuel.

In the fight to beat childhood obesity and to be healthy – physically and mentally – it’s important to get outside and get fresh air, said Channahon Park District’s Superintendent of Parks and Recreation Tammy Kjellesvik.

Now that we’re smack in the midst of winter, we might be tempted to just stay inside under the warm blankets.

But there’s a whole lot to do during the winter to keep active and healthy.

According to the February 2015 Reader’s Digest, an Indiana University study found people who sat for just one hour daily experienced a 50 percent drop in their leg arteries’ ability to expand.

Over time, cardiovascular problems can result.

The study participants who walked for five minutes for each hour they sat had no negative changes in vessel function.

The older we get, the more TV we watch, according to recent findings by media-ratings company Nielsen, going from five hours of TV a day in your 30s and 40s to seven hours for adults 65 and older.

If that’s not enough to make you get up, get out and do something, how about the fact that too much screen time in midlife is linked to Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, not to mention weight gain?

Some of my favorite childhood memories are of sledding and ice skating outdoors in Michigan. We had a nice sledding hill in town, not unlike the one at Four Seasons Park in Shorewood.

Minooka’s hill at Lions Park was a favorite for sledding when my boys were young.

Ice skating is probably one of my favorite outdoor activities. My dad used to flood our backyard and the yards of adjoining neighbors, where the ground dipped a bit. It made a great skating pond.

While we don’t have any outdoor skating rinks in the Channahon/Minooka area, Plainfield has one at Van Horn Woods, on Lily Cache Road north of Caton Farm Road, which recently got a bit of a facelift.

A word of caution – local retention ponds are not necessarily safe for ice skating.

Born in Joliet, she was a long time Channahon, Elwood and Joliet area resident. Member of the Philoptochos Society and All Saints Greek Orthodox Church.

One of Irene’s greatest loves was spending time with family and friends. Irene was a kind and gentle soul, who always had a smile on her face for everyone she met.

Preceded in death by her parents, James and Helen (nee Policandriotes) Baltas; and one brother, Jacob (Emily) Baltas.

Survived by three loving sisters, Genevieve (the late James) Vrakas, Sophie (the late Bill) Honiotes and Marina (the late Steve) Passas all of Joliet; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins also survive.

Helen attended St. Mary Carmelite Grade School and is a 1949 graduate of St. Francis Academy in Joliet.

She was a member of the Young People’s Club and Antonian’s Club at St. Anthony’s Parish, where she and her husband were married.

Helen enjoyed keeping up with her classmates at reunions and monthly club meetings and has fond memories of writing for the school newspaper, where she was the fastest typist on the staff and received several awards for her work. Helen was also a member of the Glee Club and acted in school plays, including starring in “I Remember Mama!”

Helen is an accomplished pianist.

She began private studies at age seven at the Joliet Conservatory of Music, and continued her studies at Joliet Junior College where she and her husband were the first music major graduates. Helen went on to study classical piano at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. She taught private music lessons at the Joliet Conservatory of Music as well as in Mount Clemons, Michigan. Helen continued teaching music as well as managing the bookkeeping and accounting for her and husband’s business, Brandolino West Side Music Center, which they owned for nearly 40 years.

Helen loved to read, work crossword puzzles, cook and play the piano for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and watch as they danced around her.

The family would like to thank Sunny Hill Nursing Home and the staff at Joliet Area Community Hospice for their care and support. A special thank you to Margie Stanfel for her love and devotion.

Sal was a lifetime member of the VFW Cantigny Post #367. He was a founding member of the Chaney Club and was a member of its 1941 recreational baseball league championship team. He loved bocce ball, basketball, football, and was an avid fan of the Bears and Bulls, whose games he rarely missed.

Sal was loved by many and will be truly missed.

Evelyn M. Dotson, 94, of Monon, passed away at 8:36 a.m., Sunday, January 18, 2015, at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born March 30, 1920, in Good Springs, Alabama to the late William Patrick and Melvina (Aldridge) Tennant. She attended West Frankfurt High School in Illinois and graduated from Oak Creek High School in Colorado. Her marriage was to Ralph E.”Butch” Dotson on February 11, 1942, in Richmond California. He died November 4, 1992.

Evelyn worked in munitions plants during World War II and the Vietnam War. Mrs. Dotson was a homemaker and also worked in 5/10 stores. She attended Monon Wesleyan Church and was active in the1st Southern Baptist Church of Joliet when she lived there.

Surviving is her son, Michael E. Dotson of Monon; a daughter, Peggy S. Pierce (husband, James) of Francesville; a brother, Vernon E. Tennant of Los Angeles, CA; a sister, Naoma Hardin of Rock Springs, Wyoming; and her granddaughter, Mary Jean Pierce.

Business leaders’ wish list for Rauner notes revenue needs

By DAVID MERCER The Associated Press CHAMPAIGN – With one of their own in the governor’s mansion, Illinois business leaders have a long wish list for venture capitalist Bruce Rauner. It includes cuts to high workers’ compensation costs, fewer regulations and a focused effort to improve worker training.

But many also are prepared to make a surprising concession: The $2 billion budget deficit the Republican has inherited will require more than just spending cuts. It’ll likely require more revenue, possibly from taxes.

“I’m not in favor of a tax increase, but there’s going to have to be some way to generate funds,” said Dennis Larson, executive vice president of the Central Illinois Builders, a trade group.

A spokesman for a key state union declined to comment on the No. 1 business wish, changes in workers’ compensation.

He said the American Federation of State, County Municipal Employees always tries to get along with governors, even when they disagree, but warned the state can’t keep cutting spending without seriously hurting core services.

“Those [state employee] ranks have been slashed by

more than 30 percent over the last decade,” AFSCME spokesman Anders Lindall said.

Business leaders also hope Rauner takes charge quickly to tackle other priorities. Here’s a fuller picture of what business interests would like to see:

TAXES

Company leaders are typically among the fiercest proponents of tax cuts. But while many say they’d like to see changes such as the elimination of the state’s franchise tax, they also say the state has few options to generate much-needed money. “You can’t continually cut state government,” Larson said.

Rauner has said he would like to eliminate some sales tax exemptions, and let income tax rates fall to levels before Gov. Pat Quinn’s 2011 temporary increase, which will gradually roll back over the next four years.

LEADERSHIP

Leaders in the business community say they want to see leadership, starting with a commitment to fiscal responsibility.

First, “bring our revenues in line with expenditures,” Illinois Chamber of Commerce President Todd Maisch said.

Skilled laborers are in short supply, the state’s business leaders said, and Maisch believes it’s up to the government to get involved with workforce training.

“I’ve got members who’ve gone into their local schools and said ‘We’ve got a real need for welders. Can we help you develop a program that will help you help people develop a healthy career as a welder?’” he said.

Some community colleges are doing a good job of working with employers, he said, but a statewide initiative would make the most of Illinois’ community college system.

Retired Olin Corp., a member of the Olin Retiree Club. A life long member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, serving as a trustee. He was an avid Chicago Sports Fan. Preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and three brothers.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Gertrude “Trudi” (nee Howard). Chicago woman dies after falling ill on flight from Florida

CHICAGO – Spirit Airlines says a 59-year-old woman died after she became unresponsive on a flight last week to Chicago.

Airline spokesman Paul Berry and the Cook County medical examiner’s office say Santa Teresa-Robles Morales fell ill on a flight from Tampa on Tuesday.

A doctor began performing CPR on the woman and the captain sought priority clearance as the plane approached O’Hare International Airport. The woman’s adult son was traveling with her.

Medical personnel came on board the plane and tried to resuscitate the woman. But the medical examiner’s office says Morales was pronounced dead at 1:24 p.m.

An autopsy cited multiple causes of death, including hypertension, heart disease and diabetes.

Police: 2 pedestrians killed in Chicago hit-and-run

CHICAGO – Chicago police say two pedestrians were killed in a hit-and-run crash on the city’s northwest side.

Chicago police say the crash happened about 10 p.m. Saturday. The victims weren’t immediately identified, but police say one man was unresponsive at the scene and the second man was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Police say charges are pending against the 24-year-old driver.

DuPage Children’s Museum closed until at least April

NAPERVILLE – A children’s museum likely will remain closed until at least April after a broken water pipe caused extensive damage.

The Arlington Heights Daily Herald reported all three floors of the DuPage Children’s Museum were flooded when the water line burst Jan. 8.

Museum officials had hoped to reopen within a few weeks.

But President and CEO Sarah Orleans said in a statement that won’t be possible. Orleans said the damage and financial implications are “significant.” She said the museum is insured for this kind of disaster, but officials still are sorting out the losses and what has to be replaced.

Orleans says the museum plans a grand reopening celebration in April.

The museum still is offering off-site programs.

ComEd issues warning about phone scams

CHICAGO – ComEd has issued a warning about scammers who are calling customers pretending to be ComEd employees.

The utility company says it’s received an increasing number of reports about the calls. They say the callers falsely claim that a customer’s electric service will be disconnected unless they make a payment.

The callers instruct customers to buy a prepaid credit card and call a different number with the card’s personal identification number, or PIN. The scammers sometimes manipulate caller ID so it appears

they are calling from a ComEd number.

The company says its representatives never will call customers and ask them to buy a prepaid credit card, or ask for cash.

They say anyone who thinks they may be the target of a scam should call the Illinois Attorney General’s office.

Rosemont to install cameras at public venues

ROSEMONT – Rosemont is installing hundreds of security cameras at public venues at a cost of about $571,000 a year.

The Arlington Heights Daily Herald reported the village of Rosemont will place cameras

throughout its 200,000-square foot entertainment district and parking garage. There also will be cameras placed at Allstate Arena, village hall, a park and an elementary school.

The village approved a five-year lease agreement for the cameras, and will pay a monthly fee to a security company to monitor them 24 hours a day. They’ll work out of the public safety department’s command center.

Public Safety Chief Donald Stephens III said the set-up will allow officers in the command center to relay real-time information to officers on the street.

Officials say some cameras will replace existing ones.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Shots fired outside Bidens’ Delaware home

WILMINGTON, Del. – Multiple gunshots were fired from a vehicle near the Delaware home of Vice President Joe Biden on Saturday night, the U.S. Secret Service said Sunday. The vice president and his wife were not at home at the time of the shooting, authorities said.

The Wilmington home is several hundred yards from the main road where the shots rang out, and authorities were searching outside the Biden residence and nearby homes to determine whether any rounds hit anything.

Police in New Castle County, Delaware, said there were no reports of any injuries related to the shooting.

Secret Service spokesman Robert Hoback said the shots were fired about 8:25 p.m. on a public road outside the home’s secure perimeter.

Secret Service personnel heard the shots, saw the vehicle drive past the home at a high rate of speed and flee the scene.

The Secret Service said about 30 minutes later, an individual in a vehicle tried to pass a county police officer at a checkpoint set up after the shooting near the Biden home.

Florida mall reopens after shooting that left 2 dead MELBOURNE, Florida – A shopping mall in central Florida reopened Sunday, a day after a shooting in its food court that left two people dead, including the gunman, and one injured.

Melbourne Square Mall reopened for normal business hours at noon.

Police said 57-year-old Jose Garcia-Rodriguez of Palm Bay shot his wife and Leonardo Coppola before turning the gun on himself in the mall’s food court shortly before the mall opened Saturday morning.

Idanerys Garcia-Rodriguez, who worked at the mall, survived and was hospitalized in good condition. Coppola, 36, of West Melbourne, owned a restaurant in the food court. He was shot as he tried to move Idanerys Garcia-Rodriguez out of harm’s way, police said Sunday.

The mall was closed while police investigated. On Sunday, Florida Today reported, a half-dozen flower bouquets and several white candles were displayed on the counter of a closed pizza restaurant in the food court.

Teens on alleged crime spree captured in Florida

Two teenage Kentucky sweethearts suspected in a crime spree of stolen vehicles and pilfered checks across the U.S. South have been taken into custody in Florida, authorities said Sunday.

Eighteen-year-old Dalton Hayes and his 13-year-old girlfriend, Cheyenne Phillips, were arrested without incident about 12:10 a.m.

Sunday in Panama City Beach, according to authorities in both states. The two had eluded police in multiple states while raising concern about their increasingly bold behavior.

The crowd estimate, which could not be independently verified, included people who attended the pope’s final Mass in Rizal Park and surrounding areas, and lined his motorcade route, said the chairman of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Francis Tolentino.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the Vatican had received the figure officially from local authorities and that it was a

record, surpassing the 5 million who turned out for St. John Paul II’s final Mass in the same park in 1995.

Francis dedicated the final homily of his Asia trip, which began in Sri Lanka, to children, given that the Mass fell on an important feast day honoring the infant Jesus. His focus was a reflection of the importance that the Vatican places on Asia as the future of the church since it’s one of the few places where Catholic numbers are growing – and on the Philippines as the largest Catholic nation in the region.

“We need to see each child as a gift to be welcomed, cherished and protected,” Francis said in his homily. “And we need to care for our young people, not allowing them to be robbed of hope and condemned to a life on the streets.”

Francis made a triumphant entry into Rizal Park, riding on a popemobile based on the design of a jeepney, the mod-

Israeli strikes kill six Hezbollah fighters in Syria BEIRUT – An Israeli strike in Syria on Sunday killed the son of a slain top Hezbollah commander and at least five other fighters in a move that could ratchet up tensions with the powerful Lebanese Shiite movement, which recently boasted of rockets that can hit any part of the Jewish state.

Hezbollah militants in towns and villages along the border with Israel went on high alert, said an official from the group.

In the Shiite-dominated areas of south Lebanon and Beirut, the streets emptied quickly as residents feared an escalation.

Hezbollah-run al-Manar TV warned that Israel was “playing with fire that puts the security of the whole Middle East on edge.”

In a statement issued to the media, Hezbollah identified one of the six slain men as Jihad Mughniyeh, the son of Imad Mughniyeh, a top Hezbollah operative assassinated in 2008 in Damascus. Hezbollah blames Israel for the killing and long has vowed to avenge his death.

NEW YORK – Rain “flash-freezing” on roads and sidewalks left an icy glaze under feet and tires across much of the northeast on Sunday, causing crashes that claimed at least five lives.

A crash involving 30 to 50 vehicles on Interstate 76 outside Philadelphia killed one person, and two others died in a crash involving multiple vehicles on nearby Interstate 476, police said. In northeastern Pennsylvania, a man was killed after his car overturned on an icy road and he was thrown from it and hit by a commercial vehicle. In Connecticut, police cited slippery conditions in a crash that killed an 88-year-old woman who struck a utility pole in New Haven.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is turning to his biggest TV audience of the year to pitch tax increases on the wealthiest Americans and put the new Republican Congress in the position of defending top income earners over the middle class.

As Obama continues to signal what he will propose during Tuesday’s State of the Union address, senior administration officials said during the weekend he will call for raising the capital gains rate on top income earners and eliminating a tax break on inheritances. The revenue generated by those changes would fund new tax credits and other cost-saving measures for middle-class taxpayers, officials said.

Tax increases rarely are welcomed by congressional Republicans, who now hold majorities in the House and the Senate for the first time in Obama’s presidency.

Obama’s tax proposals likely

White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer said Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” He said the speech’s theme would be “middle-class economics.”

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., said he had heard all five of Obama’s State of the Union addresses, which are filled with proposals both good and bad. But he said the president has fallen short by failing to establish close ties to Congress.

“He’s never reached out to Congress, and Democrats will tell you the same thing.

You can’t get your proposals done unless you’re willing to have a relationship with an important branch of government,” Kinzinger said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Obama also is expected to call for lawmakers to make community college free for many students, increase paid leave for workers and enact broad cybersecurity rules.

Many have described the Phil Emery/Marc Trestman era in Bears history as an “embarrassment,” and some even have gone for “dumpster fire.”

Ryan Pace has been hired to come to Chicago and win Super Bowls. But his first order of business must be to restore a modicum of dignity, normalcy and professionalism to the Bears organization.

Todd Bowles, Dan Quinn, Adam Gase or others might have been able to get that job done.

With Rex Ryan or Doug Marrone, you ran the risk they actually could have made things worse.

We know John Fox will bring a stable and professional hand to oversight of the Bears coaching staff; he will put together a

highly professional and talented group of assistants; and he will clean up the Bears’ locker room in very short order.

Every Bears player, everyone in the Bears front office and every Bears fan knows exactly what they are getting in John Fox. And every other team in the NFL knows the Bears are a rival to be taken seriously once again.

Is John Fox the guy the Bears will win championships with, or even contend again, in the near future?

That may be a horse of a different color.

Let’s forget the Broncos’ years for just a moment.

John Fox’s nine years as coach of the Carolina Panthers are eerily similar to Lovie Smith’s nine years as coach of the Bears, except Lovie was markedly more successful.

Fox ran the Panthers from 2002 to 2010, went 73-71, won two NFC South crowns, made three playoff trips, lost one Super Bowl and was 5-3 in the playoffs.

Lovie ran the Bears from 2004 to 2012, went 81-63, won three NFC North titles, made three playoff trips, lost one Super Bowl and was 3-3 in the playoffs.

Lucas hired as director of player personnel The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – The Bears have hired Josh Lucas as director of player personnel.

Lucas spent 10 seasons in the New Orleans Saints personnel department working with new Bears general manager Ryan Pace. He spent the past eight as a scout for them.

He joins a team that finished 5-11 and fired coach Marc Trestman.

John Fox was hired as coach Friday after splitting with the Denver Broncos.

Lucas also worked for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2002 to 2004 and graduated cum laude from Harvard University, where he played safety from 1997 to 1998.

The Bears announced the move Sunday.

An all-star list of potential coordinators BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush So Ryan Pace is the Bears’ new general manager, and John Fox is their new coach. It doesn’t really matter anymore what you think about that, what I think or, for that matter, what the McCaskeys think about it.

For the foreseeable future, the two most important jobs with the Bears have been filled, and now all that matters is how they perform in them.

Pace has a little time to breathe. I have no doubts he’ll be grinding around the clock this week down in Mobile, Alabama, at the Senior Bowl, in the film room whenever he’s not on a practice field somewhere, and then at the NFL combine in Indianapolis at the end of the month.

Pace is the new most important man in football around Chicago, but there is little he can do but prepare over the next 30 days or so.

Fox, on the other hand, arrived Friday night in Chicago and jumped right into the fire.

He, Todd Bowles with the New York Jets, Jim Tomsula in

San Francisco, Rex Ryan in Buffalo and Jack Del Rio in Oakland are trying to put together the best staffs of assistant coaches in the NFL right now, and new coaches in Denver and Atlanta will be joining them shortly.

It is a highly competitive environment, and the offensive and defensive coordinator jobs are the two most important you’d like to see filled as soon as possible.

What is Fox likely to do?

The most prominent names we’ve heard so far for the offensive coordinator job are Mike Mularkey, Kyle Shanahan and Adam Gase Mularkey is a well-traveled NFL lifer with head coaching experience in Buffalo and Jacksonville and offensive coordinator stints in Pittsburgh, Miami and Atlanta.

The Fox connection is a bit of a stretch; but the one time their paths crossed was from 1989 to 1991, when Mularkey was wrapping up his career as a journeyman tight end with the Steelers and Fox was their secondary coach.

There is a report that the Tennessee Titans, who employ Mularkey as their tight ends coach, may deny the Bears permission to interview him.

Cleveland Browns’ Kyle Shanahan Shanahan may be the most interesting of these three candidates. He clearly is the most in demand with other teams, in addition to the Bears; and he uses a run-first, move-the-pocket passing offense that could be best suited to Jay Cutler’s skills and may be the only thing that hasn’t been tried yet with No. 6.

Gase, of course, has been Fox’s offensive coordinator in Denver the past two seasons and actually interviewed for the Bears’ coaching job before it was given to Fox. He is well-respected and even younger than Pace at 36 but does come with a concern: How much of Denver’s success on offense was Gase and how much was Peyton Manning?

What is interesting is these are three big names in demand in a number of cities, and the list of defensive coordinator candidates is equally if not more

impressive.

It appears the first interview will go to Vic Fangio, who just wrapped up a wildly successful run in San Francisco. And, yes, Bears fans, while most NFL schemes are hybrids these days that run both 30 and 40 fronts, Fangio did run a base 3-4 package in San Francisco with four Pro Bowl linebackers in Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman, Ahmad Brooks and Aldon Smith.

Dennis Allen, Mike Smith and Mike Nolan are all former NFL head coaches and highly respected defensive coordinators whom Fox is rumored to have interest in.

The obvious connection here is Allen was Fox’s defensive coordinator in Denver before leaving to take the head coaching job in Oakland, where he was fired this season.

I am fascinated by Fangio off the job he’s done with the 49ers; and although I couldn’t care less whether the Bears play a 4-3 or a 3-4 as long as they play it well, there are a number of 3-4 fanatics among Bears backers who finally might get their wish.

Seahawks’ rally stuns Belichick, Brady to sixth Packers in overtime Super Bowl via blowout

By BARRY WILNER The Associated Press SEATTLE – Never doubt the resilience of the Seattle Seahawks.

Plagued by turnovers and outplayed much of Sunday by Green Bay, the Seahawks staged an improbable comeback and beat the Packers, 2822, in overtime. Russell Wilson, who struggled until the final minutes, hit Jermaine Kearse for a 35-yard touchdown 3:19 into the extra period to end the game.

The Seahawks became the first defending champion to make the Super Bowl in 10 years and will play AFC champion New England. How they got there was stunning.

Seattle (14-4) trailed, 19-7, with about four minutes remaining and had been ineffective on offense all game. Wilson finally put a drive together with passes to Doug Baldwin and Marshawn Lynch – initially ruled a touchdown but called back because he stepped out of bounds.

Wilson finished with a 1-yard scoring run to cut the lead to 19-14 with 2:09 left.

The onside kick went high to Packers tight end Brandon Bostick, but he couldn’t gather it, and Seattle’s Chris Matthews recovered at the 50. The crowd, which had been quiet since the Seahawks had fallen behind 16-0, came alive, and Lynch sped and powered his way to a 24-yard TD run. On the 2-point conversion, Wilson – about

to be sacked – threw a desperate pass hauled in by Luke Willson to make it 22-19 with 1:25 remaining.

Aaron Rodgers, limping on an injured calf, calmly led the Packers (13-5) down the field to set up Mason Crosby’s fifth field goal, a 48-yarder with 14 seconds to go to force overtime.

Then Wilson and Kearse struck, with Kearse – the target on all four of Wilson’s interceptions – beating Tramon Williams on the winning pass.

Kearse caught the winning score in last year’s conference title win over San Francisco, too.

“Just making the plays at the end and keep believing,” said Wilson, who was overwhelmed and sobbing after the game. “There was no doubt ... we had no doubt as a team.”

Kearse, who has caught touchdown passes in four straight postseason games, and several other Seahawks leaped into the stands behind the end zone, saluting the stadium-record crowd of 68,538.

Until the final minutes, there seemed to be no doubt the Packers were headed to the big game Feb. 1 in Glendale, Arizona. Despite All-Pro Rodgers’ injured calf, Green Bay and its overlooked defense was carrying the day.

“It’s going to be a missed opportunity that I’ll probably think about for the rest of my career,” Rodgers said.

“We were the better team today, we played well enough to win. We can’t blame anybody but ourselves.”

By HOWARD ULMAN The Associated Press FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are headed to a special place where no coach or player has gone more – the Super Bowl.

They earned their trip with the second most lopsided AFC championship victory ever.

The New England Patriots’ dominant duo earned a sixth trip to the Super Bowl with a 45-7 wipeout of the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC championship game before a raucous, rainsoaked crowd Sunday night.

The Patriots tied Dallas and Pittsburgh for most appearances in the big game with eight.

Scoring touchdowns on their first four second-half possessions, the Patriots (14-4) moved on to face defending champion Seattle (14-4) for the NFL title Feb. 1 in Glendale, Arizona. Belichick will face Pete Carroll, whom he replaced as Patriots coach 2000.

In his first year as a starter, Brady led the Patriots to a Super Bowl win in the 2001 season, starting a run of three championships in four years.

Now he and Belichick have a chance for their first in 10 years.

Brady threw three touchdown passes, LeGarrette Blount ran 30 times for 148 yards and three scores and the Patriots charged away after leading just 17-7 at halftime.

With his sixth Super Bowl berth,

Brady surpassed John Elway for the most by a quarterback and tied defensive lineman Mike Lodish for most by any player. Belichick’s sixth visit tied him with Don Shula’s for most by a coach.

Brady completed 23 of 35 passes for 226 yards before being replaced

by Jimmy Garoppolo with 3:20 left.

Brady went to the sideline where he was embraced by Belichick.

The biggest blowout in AFC title history was Buffalo’s 51-3 win over the Los Angeles Raiders in the 1990 season.

For Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, it was the worst game of his three-year career and the fourth rout in his four career games against the Patriots, all by at least three touchdowns. He completed 12 of 33 passes for 126 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.

He lost, 43-22, in last season’s divisional playoff with Blount rushing for 166 yards and four touchdowns.

And on Nov. 16, he lost, 43-22, as Jonas Gray rushed for 201 yards and four touchdowns.

The Indianapolis defense was porous against the run again Sunday night. They weren’t much better against the pass.

And when Luck threw an interception late in the third quarter, Blount ran 13 yards for the touchdown that made it 38-7.

Eakin helps Stars top Blackhawks

CHICAGO – Cody Eakin, Erik Cole and Shawn Horcoff scored in the third period, leading the Dallas Stars to a 6-3 victory Sunday over the slumping Blackhawks.

Eakin also had a short-handed goal in the first as Dallas won for the third time in four games. The Stars also earned their first victory of the season against the Hawks after they dropped their first three meetings.

Tyler Seguin had a goal and an assist for Dallas, which was coming off a 5-4 victory Saturday night over Washington. Seguin is tied

The Hawks dropped consecutive games for the first time since Nov. 1 and 2 against Toronto and Winnipeg. They are just 3-5 in January after they went 10-2-1 in December.

Brandon Saad scored two goals for the Hawks, who had a 41-33 advantage in shots on goal. Saad has five goals and an assist in his last four games.

The Stars and Blackhawks were tied at 3 when Hawks defenseman Johnny Oduya was sent off for tripping Seguin at 1:22 of the third. Eakin then capped a nifty passing se-

quence for Dallas with a tapin goal on the power play.

Cole made it 5-3 when he finished off a 2-on-1 with Jason Spezza, and Horcoff added an empty-netter with a minute left. The six goals allowed were a season high for the Hawks.

Vernon Fiddler also scored for Dallas, and Jamie Benn had three assists. Kari Lehtonen had 38 saves. Patrick Kane scored his 21st goal for the Hawks, and Corey Crawford finished with 28 stops.

The first two periods featured a little bit of everything, including a rare fight for the Hawks’ Patrick Sharp and Horcoff.

PET BRIEFS Big Run Wolf Ranch to host Winter Family Day

LOCKPORT – Big Run Wolf Ranch in Lockport will host an open house and Winter Family Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 31. Admission is $5.

New Lenox parks’ ‘Hoops & Hounds Free Throw Contest’ NEW LENOX – On Feb. 7, the New Lenox Community Park District will host “Hoops & Hounds Free Throw Contest” for students in grades one through 12.

Carolyn Wells, an author and poet who died in 1942, said, “A blunder at the right moment is better than cleverness at the wrong time.”

That seems debatable -- a blunder is still a blunder. It is true, though, that finding a clever play on the wrong deal is pointless.

In this deal, how should South plan the play in seven hearts after West leads a spade?

In the auction, North used two doses of Roman Key-Card Blackwood to learn that his partner had three key-cards (three aces or, as here, two aces and the trump king) and the diamond king. North bid seven hearts, expecting partner to win one spade, six hearts (the normal length of South’s suit for his overcall), three diamonds, two clubs and one club ruff in the North hand.

South, with only a five-card suit, saw the same tricks and a 13th with a second club ruff in the dummy. So, he won the first trick with dummy’s spade ace, drew two rounds of trumps, cashed dummy’s club king, and played another club. However, East ruffed in to defeat the contract.

That was unlucky, to be sure, but there was a more clever line. Do you see it?

When dummy’s trumps are powerful, think “dummy reversal.” After winning the first trick, South should have ruffed a spade in his hand, played a trump to dummy, ruffed another spade high, returned to dummy with a heart, ruffed the last spade, led a diamond or club to dummy, drawn East’s third trump and claimed 13 tricks: one spade, four hearts, three diamonds, two clubs and those three spade ruffs.

Crohn’s disease prevent inflammation in the intestines. This helps improve symptoms.

Surgery also may be done to remove a section of the bowel, particularly when the disease keeps recurring.

Ulcerative colitis is also a lifelong condition.

It usually begins in the rectum, then worsens to involve some or all of the large intestine.

In ulcerative colitis, the lining of the rectum and colon wears away in spots, bleeds and oozes mucus or pus. A person with ulcerative colitis may not always have symptoms. When symptoms occur, they may include: • cramping abdominal pain • bloody diarrhea • little warning before needing to have a bowel movement • fever • fatigue • decreased appetite • weight loss • dehydration Most medications for ulcerative colitis prevent inflammation in the intestine. Others decrease colon spasms to make symptoms less painful.

Surgery is an option for some people.

Sometimes avoiding certain foods, such as spicy foods and milk products, helps improve symptoms.

Both types of IBD – Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis – can increase your risk of getting colon cancer. If you have IBD, ask your doctor how often you should be tested for colon cancer.

Dear Doctor K: What is inflammatory bowel disease?

Dear Reader: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) usually refers to two conditions: Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Both cause ongoing inflammation of the digestive tract.

In both types of inflammatory bowel disease, the body’s immune system starts attacking the intestinal tissue. This attack may be an example of “collateral damage.”

The immune system may be attacking bacteria in the intestine, and cause inflammation of the intestine as a result. Whatever the reason, the immune system does what it shouldn’t do: attack normal intestinal tissues.

That’s why inflammatory bowel disease is called an “autoimmune” disease.

In Crohn’s disease, inflammation injures the small intestine, although it also can affect the large intestine (and other parts of the body). As a result, the inside lining and deeper layers of the intestinal wall become inflamed and irritated.

The lining thickens or wears away in spots. This creates ulcers, cracks, fissures and pockets of pus. Abnormal connections between organs in the digestive tract often form as well.

Once Crohn’s disease begins, it causes lifelong symptoms that come and go. Symptoms may include: • abdominal pain • diarrhea • sores around the anus • drainage of pus or mucus from the anus • pain during bowel movements • loss of appetite • joint pain • back pain • eye pain or vision changes • weight loss • fever • weakness or fatigue Most medications for

Dear Age: The way to do that is simply to BE happy and take the relationship one step at a time. While you’re doing that, accept that relationships with this kind of age disparity are not without challenges.
