By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The dog owner responsible for a series of dog-on-dog attacks in the 500 block of North Reed Street was ordered by the city Thursday to take certain steps to ensure the safety of the neighborhood – or her two dogs will have to be euthanized.

“These are some very serious attacks,” Mary Kucharz, assistant corporate counsel for Joliet, told an administrative hearing officer during a hearing Thursday. “These are not playful scratches that occur when dogs are scuffing. These are not friendly dogs roughhousing. These are what we call attacks, unprovoked.”

Thursday’s hearing outlined three separate incidents since September where 29-year-old Jaclyn Vavrik’s Rottweiller and two pit bulls are accused of attacking other neighborhood dogs.

The latest alleged attack occurred Dec. 24, when an 8-year-old German shepherd/border collie mix was run-

ning on a line in her owner’s backyard.

The dog’s chest was ripped open and she suffered a number of puncture wounds.

Two other attacks – one in September and another in November – happened as dog owners were walking their leashed dogs past Vavrik’s residence. Police were already investigating the previous attacks when they learned of the Christmas Eve attack.

Vavrik said she gave Titan, her Rottweiller, to a friend, who “gave the dog to someone else” out-of-state. Vavrik wouldn’t provide contact information.

She said she “didn’t know where to start.”

“I don’t know how to make that happen,” Vavrik said. “[He may be on the] outskirts of Indiana.”

Kucharz said she’s “very concerned” that the Rottweiler’s whereabouts are unknown.

“We don’t know if this dog is really out of state or just two blocks away,” Kucharz said after the hearing. “We need to know where Titan is, because he’s considered dangerous.”

Vavrik denied that her pit bull, Duchess, the second dog accused in the attacks, bit any dog.

“I swear on my children’s lives that Duchess has never attacked. Barked, yes,” Vavrik said. “She’s never bitten another human or a dog in her entire life. The Rottweiler did all the damage.”

On Thursday, the city deemed two of the three dogs accused in the attacks as “vicious,” triggering a seven-day deadline for Vavrik to comply with city ordinance. Otherwise, the dogs will be put to sleep because animal control will not hold them longer than a week.

At her own expense, Vavrik must pay for spaying/neutering, microchipping and liability insurance. She’ll also have to tether and muzzle the animals and erect fencing later in the year. Once deemed vicious, the dogs cannot be sold or given away without approval from the city manager, Kucharz said.

A status hearing is set for Jan. 27, where Kucharz and the administrative hearing officer will go over medical expenses related to the three incidences.

Big & Rich to headline Taste of Joliet THE HERALD-NEWS JOLIET – The Joliet Park District announced Thursday a lineup of country headliners for Saturday at the 2015 Taste of Joliet.

The Taste, which is June 26 to 28, will feature during its Saturday music lineup country stars Big & Rich, Parmalee, Danielle Bradbery, Joel Crouse and Ruthie Collins, according to a news release from the park district.

Big & Rich have 15 top 40 songs, including “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy,” “Lost

in This Moment”, and current hit, “Look at You.” The band is scheduled to take the stage at 9 p.m.

Parmalee will perform at 7 p.m. The band has two current songs in rotation, “Close Your Eyes” and “Feels like Carolina.”

Danielle Bradbery, who won season 4 of “The Voice” and was named 2014 New Artist of the Year, will play at 5:30 p.m.

Also performing will be Joel Crouse and Ruthie Collins.

2015 marks the 10-year anniversary since the return of

the Taste of Joliet in 2006, according to the news release.

The festival has grown every year, with more than 60,000 in attendance in 2014. The fest includes 25 food vendors, kid zone and carnival.

Cheap Trick has already been announced as the headliner Friday night.

General Admission tickets are $10 online, $15 day of performance, and are available at www.tasteofjoliet.com. Kids 11 and younger are free all weekend. Admission for seniors (62 and over) is $5 a day. Parking is free.

Company will decide by March whether to move Joliet jobs to there

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Most of the production and about a third of the remaining jobs would be moved from the Joliet Caterpillar plant if the company moves forward with a plan announced Thursday.

Caterpillar said it will decide by March whether to go ahead with the plan, which includes cutting 230 Joliet jobs – nearly all the remaining union jobs at the plant – and moving two production lines to Mexico.

“The two production lines they’re looking at are probably 75 percent of what that plant is producing,” said state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood.

Walsh said he spoke with Caterpillar officials Thursday and will mount an effort to try to keep the jobs in Joliet.

“Nothing is set in stone,” Walsh said. “I have asked Caterpillar to let us know if there is anything we can do.”

Caterpillar spokeswoman Rachel Potts said the company announced its plan Thursday because “we need to give the time to have the appropriate discussions and some of the discussions will be with the local union.”

Potts said the move would not be based on considerations such as taxes and policy issues that could be addressed by government officials. But, she said, “As we move forward and continue our discussions, if we need more information from local officials, we will reach out to them.”

Ron Stanley, business representative for Machinists District 8, said the company gave the union a 60-day notice Thursday.

“Per the [union] contract, they have to give us 60-day notice for a partial plant closing,” he said.

Stanley said he did not know what the prospects were for keeping jobs in Joliet, and the union will meet with Caterpillar.

JUST THE LATEST CUT

The move, if it goes forward, would be one more cut at the Joliet factory, which in the late 1970s employed nearly 7,000 workers.

Now, there are 770. About 250 of those are union employees. Potts said all 230 jobs that could be cut are held by union employees.

Just in the last two years, the number of union employees at the plant have dropped from the 780 who worked there in 2012, when Machinists went on strike in an unsuccessful effort to prevent Caterpillar from reducing benefits.

“Their workforce here has gone down so much over the years, it’s hard to believe,” said Russ Slinkard, chief executive of the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

If the company moves ahead with the plan, production would begin to be moved in the third quarter of 2016 and be completed in the second quarter of 2018.

Potts would not confirm Walsh’s characterization of the plan as involving 75 percent of Joliet production, but said it is “a significant portion of the production work in Joliet.”

Caterpillar would move production of gear and engine oil pumps and valves to a sister plant in Monterrey, Mexico. Production of truck struts and truck hoist cylinders would remain in Joliet.

Walsh said Caterpillar contacted him in his role as the state representative in the district that includes the Joliet plant. Walsh also is secretary-treasurer for Machinists District 8, and he once worked at the plant.

Parent company of Joliet casino files for bankruptcy

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The parent company of Harrah’s Joliet Hotel and Casino is seeking bankruptcy protection but says the move will not affect the local casino.

Caesars Entertainment Operating Co., which owns

the Joliet casino, announced Thursday it filed for bankruptcy protection in Chicago and hopes the court agrees to its plan to get out from under $18.4 billion in debt.

The company – a division of casino giant Caesars Entertainment Corp. – voluntarily filed for reorganization under Chapter 11 to “implement a re-

structuring plan to strengthen its financial position,” company officials said in a statement.

Despite the bankruptcy filing, company officials said its casinos and hotels would remain open and continue to host meetings and events, and ensured customers’ loyalty points would accrue and entertainment would happen on

schedule.

The same will be true for Harrah’s Casino in Joliet, which will stay open for business. All operations will continue as usual, according to a company statement. Guests will continue receiving service.

“It’s all open for business at the Joliet casino. Operations

are going to continue as usual … everything is staying the same,” a company spokesperson said.

Joliet Mayor Thomas Giarrante said he heard Thursday about the bankruptcy. He plans to reach out to Harrah’s Casino to find out more.

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Central High School student Isaiah Alicea and several other students made a sandwich Thursday that could become a menu item at Chicagoland Speedway.

The Jibarito sandwich is also known as an island sandwich, consisting of steak, lime, onions and garlic-mayo sauce.

It was one of several sandwiches Joliet Central High School culinary students created for a contest Thursday to determine which would appear as a Chicagoland Speedway concession item.

Alicea said he chose the Jibarito because of his family.

“I’m Puerto Rican. All my life I wanted to cook and the people who taught me was my family,” he said.

Thursday’s contest is the first of two for Joliet high school students. At Joliet Central, students were split into teams, each offering a sandwich.

The second contest will take place Monday at Joliet West High School and feature food from its culinary stu-

The final part of the competition takes place March 26 in Joliet West High School’s cafeteria and will serve as a fundraiser for a local food pantry.

They sample one food item from each campus and judge it on flavor, creativity, presentation, ingredients, cost and ability to mass produce.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these kids,” said Rochelle Bjelland, Joliet Central High School culinary instructor. “The big thing with the kids is they get to represent the school, Chicagoland

Speedway and themselves.”

She said she notified students of the contest in May, and they began creating sandwiches in August. They all came up with their own ideas, flavors and recipes, she said.

But it’s more than just making a tasty meal.

“It’s good for the kids to speak eloquently,” Bjelland said. Students Thursday had to present their meals to the judges. “One thing I tell the kids is, when they walk through the door ... to present yourself professionally.”

This year represents the fourth year Chicagoland Speedway and Joliet Township High Schools have partnered to offer students “real world experience,” said Carol Collins, school district project director.

“It’s relevant to what they will pursue,” she said.

Therese Maloney, director of operations for Levy Restaurants, which also partnered with the school, was one of the judges. She appreciated the different cooking methods students used, finding them “pretty advanced for a high school class.”

“I’m actually thoroughly impressed by this,” she said.

Plainfield teachers reach verbal agreement on contract

Association of Plainfield Teachers President Dawn Bullock said in an email the negotiation team has a verbal agreement and is waiting for it to be put in writing by Fri-

Plainfield School District spokesman Tom Hernandez confirmed that a tentative agreement was reached Wednesday.

“We are hopeful,” he said.

“The board does not plan to vote on this before [the teachers] do.”

Teachers will hold meetings in their own schools over the next couple weeks and will meet in a general membership session Jan. 27, Bullock said.

“Details of the [contract] will be available after Jan. 29,” Bullock said.

Prolonged talks

Negotiations have gone on since late 2013, but teachers have worked without a contract since August 2014.

On Oct. 8, the negotiating teams from both sides worked out a tentative deal. But teachers turned down the deal in a final vote Oct. 22, saying they have received an increased

workload and the tentative contract’s salary, benefits and retirement provisions didn’t address that.

Teachers started regularly picketing School Board meetings, while negotiations with district officials continued.

While the discussions extended into the spring semester, talks weren’t as contentious as in 2002, when Plainfield teachers went on strike.

Throughout negotiations,

Bullock has said a strike was possible, but not likely due to both sides negotiating in good faith.

School Board President Roger Bonuchi said he couldn’t comment on the agreement’s details because nothing was in writing as of Thursday.

“I hope we can come to an agreement and turn the attention back to teaching and running the district,” Bonuchi said.

Forest preserve district looks to Board hires consultant ‘downsize over the next few years’ for possible referendum

The Forest Preserve District of Will County is considering scaling back programming and other special events, such as 5K races, as part of a long-term plan to restructure operations and downsize staff over the next few years, Marcy DeMauro, the district’s executive director said Thursday.

The staff had planned to place a moratorium on all outside special events starting in August, DeMauro said.

But the district is holding off after hearing complaints from event organizers and district commissioners, who said they “had no knowledge” of the policy change.

Don Gould, district board president, said he first found out over the weekend about the district cutting off special events when a Channahon

music group emailed him that they were denied a permit.

There was “no justification” in making this change without coming to the board first, he said.

DeMauro said the staff was trying to get the word out that this would happen in the future.

“We were trying to be proactive. We always intended to have this conversation,” DeMauro said. “What our staff has been working on is that transition.”

Staffing reductions

The district enacted an early retirement program to avoid a potential $400,000 budget shortfall this year. Ten of the district’s 121 employees will retire this summer, DeMauro said.

“We’re going to be looking at what services we need to pull back from, because they’re very time- and labor-inten-

sive,” DeMauro said. “When you look at the big picture of all the services we provide, for free, we provide hundreds of programs each year.”

The district will consider alternatives to the moratorium, she said, including moving to a sliding scale structure for special event permits and limiting the number of events.

The fee is a flat rate of $25, regardless of size, length of time and date, DeMauro said.

And the district is losing out – big time, she said, noting that a lot of hours go into coordinating and providing police presence. There’s also a lot of wear and tear on the trails.

Nearly 30 special events were held last year, with anywhere from 50 to 2,000 people, she said. Events are getting bigger each year, too, she said, so parking has become an issue.

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Public Library Board has hired a company to guide it through the preliminary process of pursuing a referendum in 2016.

After an interview process that included three companies and lasted more than two hours, the board hired CCS International Inc., an Oakbrook Terrace-based company, as an owner’s representative.

The interviews were open to the public during a special board meeting Wednesday.

“The board liked the process that CCS presented and also felt that the experience and scope of work were very good,” Library Director Julie Milavec said.

Milavec said CCS is expected to solicit the board’s goals and priorities, and then guide the board through

identifying library needs, selecting a technological firm and architect, and asking residents for additional money through a referendum.

“The whole process has to start with the identification of the problem, which is already known, that we have a space need and have had one for more than a decade,” Milavec said.

Library staff identified a need for more space more than five years ago, with a library expansion or a new library building considered as possible solutions.

In 2009, the library district was 40 percent overcapacity when it asked the public in 2009 for permission to take out $30 million in bonds through a referendum. That referendum failed, in part because of low voter turnout, Milavec said.

At its next regular board meeting Wednesday, the board intends to appoint Plainfield resident Jason Puetz to a twoyear unexpired term on the board, Milavec said. The seat was previously vacated by Gretchen Fritz.

Puetz was the only person who filed to run for the open position during the April 7 election. Milavec said Puetz will likely be appointed to begin serving and gaining experience on the board before being elected.

Puetz attended Wednesday’s special board meeting as a resident.

Every month, there are tenants who submit their rent payments late. Being past due isn’t awful. However, ignoring it is according to Tim McGinnis the manager of Celtic Property Management.

Celtic manages about 425 properties, and only a small percentage of tenants need reminders to pay their rent.

Celtic credits careful tenant screening, verifying past payment performance, and confirming that potential tenants can afford the rent. Clearly stating payment deadlines in the lease and reviewing it face-to-face is critical.

However, he concedes, “No one’s perfect. Missing a payment deadline happens to everyone. We understand that tenants may have unexpected financial difficulties.”

The solution: communicating with the landlord before the rent becomes late.

“The biggest mistake is not contacting the landlord.

We’ll work with tenants who

are upfront with us. If they tell us their problem, we may have a solution,” McGinnis says. Options may include an agreed upon payment plan.

However, tenants should not expect payment arrangements every month as they are not a substitute for good financial planning.

For many landlords like Celtic, rent is due on the first day of the month with a fiveday grace period. After the sixth day, the collection process begins. This process includes phone calls, emails, and late notices, as well as 5 Day Notices. With no communication or payment from the tenant the next step is possible eviction.

Experts say that landlords are motivated to keep their tenants despite occasional mishaps in payments, as it’s time-consuming and costly to evict and replace a tenant.

However, landlords rely on rent to pay their bills on time, and missing payments are costly for everyone.

URBANA – Police reportedly found a Joliet man sleeping in a stolen pickup truck early Tuesday.

Urbana Police Lt. Dan Morgan said an officer was on patrol about 2:40 a.m. when he spotted the vehicle running with the lights off in the parking lot of an apartment complex.

“Police are frequently called to that complex and it was unusual to see a work vehicle

parked there. The officer ran the plate and learned the truck had been reported stolen,” Morgan said.

The officer found Tyree Tyree D. D. Walker, 20, Walker sleeping inside the pickup and arrested him on a charge of possession of a stolen vehicle, Morgan said.

after its owner stopped at milepost 240 on Interstate 57 near Rantoul, about 15 miles from Urbana.

In 2003, Caterpillar sold its land and buildings at the Joliet site to Oak Brook-based CenterPoint Properties and now leases its space.

Greuling said Caterpillar’s decision to lease rather than own its Joliet operations gave the company flexibility.

“Unfortunately,” he said, “this is an example of how they can be flexible with the Illinois workforce.”

The Caterpillar announcement is “not a surprise,” said John Greuling, chief executive of the Will County Center for Economic Development.

“We’ve had a concern about Caterpillar all along – what their corporate plan is for Illinois,” Greuling said. “Their chairman and CEO has made a lot of noise about the business climate in Illinois.”

However, outdoor enthusiasts can still get snag some winter fun on a pair of cross-country skis or snowshoes.

Snowshoeing doesn’t exactly require a trail, but the Will County Forest Preserve District has two trails in Plainfield that are perfect for cross country skiing and snowshoeing - Lake Renwick Bikeway and Lake Renwick Preserve Turtle Lake Access.

The DuPage River Trail, which runs through Plainfield, is also great for cross country skiing and snowshoeing, said Cindy Cain, public info officer for the Forest Preserve District of Will County. None of the District’s trails are plowed in winter just for that reason.

Cain advised using basic

safety tips for a great outdoor trekking experience.

“Always tell someone where you’re going,” Cain said. Better yet, take a buddy with you, she advised.

“Always bundle up and make sure you’re warm enough,” Cain said. “Look at the trail maps online to see the mileage and to make sure you know where you’re at so you can get your bearings. There are lots of smartphone apps to tell you how far you’ve gone.”

Plan your trip in advance so you’re finished by the time the forest preserve closes at sunset. Currently, that’s about 4:30 pm, Cain said.

“That’s when our officers close and lock the gates.”

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – State Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, was inaugurated Wednesday for his first elected term in Springfield.

“I remember two years ago when I was in Springfield for Pam Roth’s inauguration, sitting in the third-floor mezzanine. This year I sat and looked up at the John third floor and Anthony can’t believe that I’ve come so far in two years,” Anthony said Thursday.

He said he is eager to start his first term as an elected official and work toward items that impact the quality of life for local families.

Anthony was appointed to the 75th District seat after former state Rep. Pam Roth resigned because she was moving out of state. He won his first election for the seat in November against Martha Shugart, D-Morris.

“I want to work with Governor Rauner and colleagues on both sides of the aisle to bring about change that will impact quality of life including education, health care, transportation and veteran services,” Anthony said.

As he settles in to this term, he’s also settling in to a new office, as he has moved his Morris office from south of the river into town.

“We’ve started the process of getting moved and will be having a soft opening,” Anthony said. “Once we are completely moved and open, we will have an open house where constituents can come and ask questions.”

Anthony said he will use the open house time to answer any questions residents have and that if he doesn’t have an answer, he will work toward finding the answer.

“I want people to get to know who John Anthony is,” he said.

She officially started Jan. 5 as human resource director.

Jankiewicz has 15 years of human resources experience and has worked Deborah for Marshall Jankiewicz Field’s, Schneider Logistics, University of Chicago Hospitals and the village of Alsip.

“I hit the ground running the first week,” she said Wednesday. “I’ve been working on things that need to be done and spending time getting to know people.”

Personnel Committee Chairwoman Vicki Geiger said the board is excited to have Jankiewicz on staff.

Some of her time will be spent looking at past practices and seeing how she can improve them going forward.

Jankiewicz holds a Senior Professional Human Resources certification, bachelor’s degree in human resources management, and is nearly done pursuing her master’s in human resource management.

She said her specialties include: state and federal law, employee relations, liability mitigation, strategic management, organizational development, process improvement, workforce planning and employment, resource development and training, performance management, workers compensation and safety.

Joan M. Claussen (nee Russell) passed away peacefully with her family by her side, Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center. Age 72.

Survived by her daughters, Marcy (Peter) Sartori, Merritt (Jim) Edson, and Margaret Claussen; five grandchildren, Gianna, Elena and Luke Sartori and Emma and Olivia Edson; sister, Peggi (Jack) Lynch, sisters-in-law, Ann Marie Russell and Grace Murphy; “sister-in-heart”, Kathy Condon; dear friend, Judy Hadala; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Preceded in death by her husband, Paul K. (January 23, 2014); her parents, James C. and Margaret M. (nee O’Brien); brother, Jim Russell: sisters and brothers-in-law, Alice (George) Gunderson, Nancy (Fred) Kestel, George Claussen, Jim Murphy, and Kelly Lynch.

Joan taught for many years in Joliet School District #86, taking time off to raise her family, and retired from teaching in 2005.

She enjoyed time with her grandkids, outings with friends, crafting, gardening and quilting.

Joan was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many.

Her smile was contagious.

Betty, along with her husband, Homer, owned and operated Cole’s Tree Farm in Braidwood.

She was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church in Braidwood and TOPPS in Wilmington.

Betty made many friends easily and will be deeply missed by all.

James Russell (Jim) Fay, age 90, an “Icon” in his parish; A leader in his industry, died as he had lived, gently and peacefully, in sure and certain hope of resurrection at Silver Cross Hospital, Joliet January 10, 2015.

The Joliet native, third of the three children of William E. Fay, Sr. and Helen Maloney Fay succeeded his father as President of Joliet-based Champion Machinery Company in 1962 serving in that capacity for 31 years. In 1993, he became senior Executive Consultant to CMC-America, creator of the Champion Baking Equipment and Systems, then under the third generation leadership of his son, Edward Charles (Ed) Fay. On his return from World War II service in the Navy’s Pacific Theater, Jim took on a role in the industry team that created sanitary standards that have guided practice for decades, working until his death to spearhead CMC’s drive to perfect engineering aimed at achieving today’s highest world-class sanitary standards for a newly globalized market. In 1983, the company was selected to be the first to bring Automated, White Pan Bread Production to Mainland China.

Although an enthusiastic ambassador of global customer relationships, Jim remained a steadfast champion of the company’s “Made in America” commitment to quality and innovation. In 2011, at the age of 87, he was granted a US Patent for Bakery Equipment. In the current year of the 21st Century, Jim saw CMC America being recognized for its cutting edge cookie production and dough moving technology that allows bakeries and food preparation facilities large and small to achieve today’s trending artisanal quality without loss of efficiency or maximum productivity.

Jim’s educational history began at St. Raymond’s Grammar School where he graduated in the class of 1938. He attended Joliet Catholic High School until 1940 and finished his secondary education at Culver Academy, where he graduated as “Best All-round Cadet” in 1942. While studying Engineering at Northwestern University he was a member of the NROTC before serving as a Naval Officer in the Pacific Theater of Operations in World War II, stationed in Pearl Harbor, HI. In 1948 he was

awarded an MBA by Babson College.

In 1949 he was awarded a Bakery Science Degree from the American Institute of Baking.

In 1952 he married Margaret (Peggy) Cunningham Fay at the Church of St. Raymond where he had previously received the Sacraments of Baptism, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation and where their five children were Baptized. He requested and received the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at the hands of Cathedral Rector Very Rev. Bradley Baker who will preside at his Mass of Christian Burial and Resurrection on Monday January 19, culminating a long and blessed relationship with the Church he considered “the parish church of the whole Diocese of Joliet.”

Along with his wife Peggy, Jim was serving, at the time of his death, as one of the Co-Chairs of the Cathedral’s Centennial Campaign. His deceased friend and brother-in-law William Cunningham, SJ did not hesitate to refer to Jim as “a Christ Figure” in the mold of the central character of Myles Connolly’s parable novella, Mr. Blue. It appears that Jim modeled his vocation to “Give Back” on Christ’s pattern of proclaiming the word, feeding the hungry of body and spirit and proclaiming the good news of Scripture. He remained actively in involved to the end of 2014 in a 44-year Ministry as a Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus Minister of the Word. He served as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist for 31 Years and Visitation of the Sick of his parish and in the hospitals and nursing homes of the area. On the day of his death and at Masses during the weekend, his death was announced in pastoral messages that referred to him as “an icon” for the parish community where both Jim and his wife Peggy were, and where she remains, a tireless worker in lay ministries ranging from Proclamation of the Word at daily Masses to the Cathedral’s Bereavement outreach and religious education programs.

He admired and served with dedication in the Cathedral Of Saint Raymond St Vincent De Paul Society; and Meals on Wheels where he frequently visited to replace unconsumed meals with the next day’s ones, understanding that their warm and respectful conversation was the principal nourishment he was called upon to offer.

He was a Founding Member of the Joliet Country Club for 64 years and of the Chicago Lake Shore Club and Chicago International Club.

Jim was preceded in death (by only three days) by his eldest Brother, William E. (Bill) Fay, Jr. (Margaret Hoover) and his eldest son, James Russell Fay, Jr. (Mary Fay, MD).

He is survived by his wife Margaret Cunningham (Peggy) Fay and their surviving children: Patrick of Pawling, NY; Meagen (William Gunther) of Hollywood, CA; Edward (Cathreen Clohisy) of Wilmette, IL; and Christopher (Milena Villamar) of Birmingham, MI; thirteen grandchildren and several Nieces and Nephews.

Rauner issues order to make names of political hires public

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner issued an executive order Thursday requiring information about all political hires to be posted online, the latest in a series of early moves he said are intended to send the message that change has arrived in Illinois.

The Winnetka Republican said he issued his order in response to improper hiring at the Illinois Department of Transportation under former Democratic Govs.

He said the public deserves to know who’s getting taxpayer-funded jobs based on politics, rather than strictly because of their qualifications.

Rauner also said he’s firing almost all of the agency heads and top staffers who worked under Quinn, athough some may eventually be rehired. And he said he’s leaning toward reversing the appointments and executive orders Quinn issued since he lost his bid for re-election in November, including an order requiring state vendors and subcontractors to pay a $10 minimum wage, instead of the $8.25 they had been required to pay.

“We’re setting a tone early.

We want to take decisive action early,” Rauner said. “This is a big turnaround. It’s a big cultural change. ... These are just some of the first steps of many that we’ll take together.”

The executive orders by Rauner and Quinn – including three Quinn issued in his final hours in office – have been criticized by some as an overreach of their authority.

U of Illinois trustees OK tuition freeze for 3 campuses

CHAMPAIGN – The University of Illinois trustees froze tuition rates for in-state students Thursday, after years of increases that have helped drive the total cost of four years on the school’s flagship campus over $100,000.

Trustees unanimously approved the previously announced plan after hearing Vice President for Academic Affairs Christophe Pierre describe the tuition freeze as a way to improve the appeal of the university’s three campuses to in-state students. The percentage of accepted applicants who enroll in the schools has dropped significantly over the past decade.

“Our top priority is to insure access and affordability,” Pierre said. “We do want the U of I to be an attractive” option for instate students.”

The plan would freeze tuition at $12,036 a year at the flagship Urbana-Champaign campus for the 2015-16 school year, $10,584 at the Chicago campus

and $9,405 in Springfield. State law guarantees first-year students at public universities that their tuition won’t increase for four years, so those rates would not change over that period for students who start school this fall.

Tuition would increase by 2 percent for non-Illinois residents.

Steady tuition increases have been the rule at universities around the country in recent years. At Illinois, those increases have been significant – 71 percent at the Urbana-Champaign and Chicago campuses since 2005 and 106 percent at the Springfield campus.

BALTIMORE – President Barack Obama launched a fresh push Thursday to bring paid sick and family leave to working parents and other private-sector employees as the White House unveiled proposals that could benefit tens of millions of people. Most require action by the Republican-controlled Congress.

“Forty-three million Americans do not get paid sick leave,” Obama said after a lunchtime discussion about juggling work and family with a group of women at a Baltimore cafe that offers paid sick leave to its small workforce.

The White House said Obama will push the issue anew in the State of the Union address he delivers Tuesday night.

Obama wants Congress, states and cities to pass measures to let workers earn up to a week of paid sick time a year. He’ll also ask for more than $2 billion to encourage states to create paid family and medical leave programs.

U.S. quickly eases travel and trade rules on Cuba

By BRADLEY KLAPPER and MICHAEL WEISSENSTEIN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Swiftly expanding trade ties with Cuba, the Obama administration opened the door to easier travel and a wide range of new export opportunities with the communist island starting Friday, punching the biggest hole to date in America’s half-century-old embargo.

Less than a month after the Cold War foes agreed to end their enmity, the Commerce and Treasury departments unveiled new rules Thursday permitting U.S. citizens to visit Cuba without special permits.

Most U.S. travelers still will be required to go on supervised group trips, but now virtually any U.S. company or organization can offer such trips without the paperwork and inspections that discouraged past expansion of travel to Cuba. Some tour operators, already seeing unprecedented interest in legal travel to Cuba, expect some tourists

to simply ignore the restrictions.

American companies also now will be permitted to export telephones, computers and Internet technology, and to send supplies to private Cuban firms. However, Cuban authorities have said nothing about the restrictions they might impose on U.S. products entering a country that long has frustrated foreign investors with red tape and tapped-out infrastructure.

The changes are the latest step in President Barack Obama’s plan to rebuild relations with Cuba after a history marred by suspicion, espionage and conflict. The new regulations come three days after U.S. officials confirmed the release of 53 political prisoners Cuba had promised to free.

The U.S. is now “one step closer to replacing out-of-date policies,” Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said Thursday.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the new rules “immediately enable the American people to provide

more resources to empower the Cuban population to become less dependent upon the state-driven economy.”

They also allow U.S. citizens to start bringing home small amounts of Cuban cigars, long adored by aficionados but banned under U.S. law. The limit is $100 for alcohol and tobacco products and $400 in total goods.

Only Congress can fully end the 54-year embargo.

Obama announced last month he would soften the restrictions, arguing that “these 50 years have shown that isolation has not worked.” The new spirit of cooperation emerged after 18 months of secret talks that culminated in the exchange of imprisoned spies and the release of Alan Gross, a U.S. government contractor who had been imprisoned in Cuba for five years.

The few U.S. companies facilitating travel to Cuba said inquiries have exploded since December and American visits are expected to surge this year from about 90,000 annually.

Thumbs-up to a day of giving back The Herald-News Editorial Board offers this week’s thumbs-up and thumbsdown: Thumbs-up: to Dale Evans and the hundreds of volunteers who will show up Monday for “Day On, Not a Day Off,” the Martin Luther King Jr. Day project that Evans organizes to provide helping hands for assorted jobs to be done for local nonprofit organizations for a day.

This is a great way of converting a day off from school or work into a meaningful experience.

Thumbs-down: to Continental Construction Inc., the Evanston-based contractor that has dragged its feet so long on the window-wall reconstruction project at the Shorewood-Troy Library that the library board had to terminate the contract and find someone else to do the work. This job was supposed to be done three months ago, but the company has stopped communicating with the library through email and phone calls.

The architect hasn’t been able to reach them, either.

Thumbs-up: to Chuck Lyons, funeral director at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Joliet, for working to change the public’s overall impression of funeral homes. Instead of something people approach with hesitation, Lyons wants funeral homes to become resources of useful information.

Lyons not only is hosting an innovative program Feb. 7 on Abraham Lincoln – focusing on Lincoln’s funeral, along with a replica of Lincoln’s actual coffin – Lyons is planning a series of outreach events to increase Woodlawn’s interaction with the community.

Thumbs-down: to the foot-dragging in state government, which has yet to find a solution to the growing problem of electronics recycling. You can’t throw away your old TV because environmental laws do not allow it. But the electronics recycling programs in place are in trouble for lack of funding, and Will County now plans to cut down on its recycling events.

It’s getting harder to get rid of those old TVs.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR TEAM COULD FOSTER TRUST BETWEEN SCHOOL, PARENTS To the Editor:

I recently read about a community policing system that fosters familiarity and trust among residents. This relationship-building team is the Joliet Neighborhood Oriented Policing Team.

I propose that a team of teachers/ counselors form a Joliet Neighborhood Oriented School Team with the hope of fostering trust and familiarity between school and parents.

A former educator, I observed the small number of minority parents who attend open house and other school/ parent evening functions. Nighttime functions can be problematic for some families who rely on the Pace bus to travel across town. Besides, the West Side of Joliet being unfamiliar to some parents, a school building might conjure memories of frustration and failure.

There was merit to a one-time idea to “take the show on the road.” One summer, small groups of teachers visited families in their homes to answer questions from incoming freshmen parents.

Now, when East Side parents gather at their local church or community center, school personnel could travel and meet the parents on “their own turf.”

The neighborhood policing helps build relationships and foster trust, and the arrival of school personnel to a neighborhood could do the same. When working at Joliet West, Dick Dobbs, a psychologist and counselor, joined me on a “field trip” to Sacred Heart Church one Sunday. There, we met with parents after services and helped them fill out financial aid forms.

Using the church site, we were able to join the pastor relationship to the school relationship and offer a much-needed service to the parents of our students. It is recognized that the probability of academic success greatly increases when there is a partnership involving the teacher, the parent and the student.

Meeting the parent where his/her comfort already is established is a step closer to achieving that success.

Wow! The smoke and mirrors are up and running at full speed. Now it’s a CIA report full of “bad stuff” we did to get “bad guys.”

Oddly enough, the ones issuing the report were there giving the deeds their full approval.

Could this be a heads-up on how the Democrats plan to attack Jeb Bush, should he decide to run for president?

I guess killing the bad guys with drones, along with collateral damage, is a much better way of getting the bad guys.

This rather than capturing them and holding them in confinement while we beat on them a little. Then after a while we trade them for one lone soldier, with questionable loyalty to the USA. This administration continues to give me more and more to write about. You have got to love it.

Lockport tops Bolingbrook on senior night

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Each graduating class has a story all of its own, and this year’s group of seniors on Lockport’s wrestling team is no exception.

Most of the Porters from the class of 2015 have earned their way to the varsity squad the old-fashioned way, moving up through the ranks. Of the eight who started in Thursday’s dual meet with Bolingbrook, only Tyler Johnson saw regular action as a freshman.

But while the path to compete on the varsity level may be different than for some previous teams, the results have been similar as Lockport is again ranked among the state’s top 10 large schools after losing a talented group from a year ago and dealing with injury woes.

The Porters kicked off a busy week against tough competition by honoring their 11 seniors before capturing a 4622 SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue victory over the Raiders.

“We replaced seven seniors with eight regular seniors now,” Porters coach Josh Oster said. “Other than Tyler, Cameron Roat is a two-year starter; and guys like Sam Fuentes, Eddie Ginnan and Joe Pacetti all wrestled some varsity last year, and some of them wrestled on the freshman team.

It’s a nice group, and they’ve worked their way up.”

Lockport meets Sandburg on Friday before taking on Glenbard North, Barrington and Metea Valley at its own mega dual Saturday. Then it’s on to next week’s SWSC meet.

In Thursday’s dual, the squads split the 10 contested matches and were tied at 22 as a result, but the Raiders had to forfeit at four weights, which made the final score less reflective of what took place.

“This isn’t a team that you can meet with a partial lineup,” Raiders coach Dan Bullivant said. “But we came with the horses that we had, and we wrestled pretty strong. I’m very proud of our team since we had won our last five duals coming into tonight. We have a

The Porters jumped out to a 10-0 lead after Trevell Timmons beat Clarence Golden, 12-2, in

the opener at 152 pounds, and then Eddie Ginnan rallied for a fall in 4:10 over Jordan Shaw.

“For the past four years, I’ve been looking forward to being a senior so I could be a leader

on the team,” Ginnan said. “It’s kind of a nice role since everyone looks to you for advice. We wrestle as tough as we can, and everyone on the lower levels looks to you with respect.

We’ve had some bad duals, but we have the ability to rebound and wrestle well. We have pretty big hopes for going to team state and have a better chance than in previous years.”

Bolingbrook responded with a 3-2 win from Mitch Murray over Joe Pacetti at 170 before Victor Armand forced overtime with a takedown with two seconds left and then got a fall in 6:47 against George Tragos.

After the nationally ranked Johnson won by technical fall at 195 to increase his team’s lead to 15-9, Chris Murino picked up a forfeit win.

The Raiders won two of the next three matches as Malik Butler pinned Billy McNabb in 2:14 at 285 and John O’Brien won, 8-0, over Dalton Dwyer at 113. Jake Cook won, 10-2, for the Porters over Ethan O’Brien in between those matches.

Lockport’s Brendan Ramsey (120), Cameron Roat (132) and Shayne Oster (138) all received forfeit wins. In the other two matches, Porter Sam Fuentes beat Frank Rodriguez, 4-1, at 126, and Raider Josh Alexander was an 8-1 winner over George Wolfe in the finale.

“We were solid halfway through the year; but with the addition of Tyler – possibly the best wrestler in the state – we have a pretty full lineup,” Fuentes said. “We’ve had to look to our JV guys, and they had to step up – like I had to do the last two years – and that makes for a better team now and in the future. We usually wrestle good; but when we wrestle bad, we take the advice of our coaches and other seniors, and we come back and wrestle better.”

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

Minooka grad leaves Houston to be Atlanta’s key addition in deal for Gattis Mike Foltynewicz made his major league debut in September with the Houston Astros.

He likely will make his mark as a big-league pitcher with the Atlanta Braves.

The Astros and Braves completed a five-player trade late Wednesday night. Foltynewicz, armed with his electric, 100-mph fastball, is considered the centerpiece of the three-player package Atlanta received.

Of course, with the raves Foltynewicz had been receiving all along from the Astros’ brass after he became their first-round draft pick in 2010, he did not expect a trade.

“I got up and saw a text from [local sports journalist and longtime friend] Tommy Stokke,” Foltynewicz said.

“He asked me what that was about me being traded to Atlanta. I said, ‘No, I don’t know anything about that.’

“Then I started seeing my name on social media, and one of the big guys, Ken Rosenthal, was reporting it. I thought then it had been confirmed. But I still waited 12 or 13 hours, wondering, before the Astros called and said they had traded me. It was a shock at first, but this is a business. It’s an honor to be traded for a player like Evan Gattis.”

The Braves’ focus this off-season has been to get younger and rebuild. Foltynewicz fits that directive. Houston acquired power-hitting Gattis and relief pitcher James Hoyt in exchange for Foltynewicz and two other prospects, fellow right-hander Andrew Thurman and third baseman Rio Ruiz.

Foltynewicz said he has received calls from a couple members of the Braves’ front office, and they said they have big plans for him.

“I was a big part of the trade, and I think they will have me go into spring training as one of three or four guys fighting for the fifth starter spot,” he

Foltynewicz said he is excited to be with an organization with a history of success.

“A lot of guys have a lot of success out of Atlanta through the years,” he said. “I’m excited to be able to put on that jersey. I’ve heard good things

about the organization from guys who played there, and I’m glad to be part of the rebuilding they are doing right now.”

Foltynewicz was drafted

by Houston 19th overall out of Minooka in 2010. Coincidentally, he was selected 685 picks ahead of Gattis, who was a 23rd-round pick that year.

In Foltynewicz’s first taste of the big leagues, he had a

5.30 ERA for the Astros last September. In 16 relief appearances, he worked 182⁄3 innings, struck out 14 and walked seven.

Foltynewicz largely has been a starting pitcher in his minor league career. He started in 2014 for Houston’s Triple-A team at Oklahoma City.

However, he also has pitched in relief.

Before the trade, it was

widely assumed he would compete for a spot in the Astros’ starting rotation in spring training.

Now, it will be the Braves’ brain trust – particularly manager Fredi Gonzalez and pitching coach Roger McDowell – that will decide how best to use him.

“I’ve kind of been molded to start, and that’s what I would like to do,” he said.

Something that will be different in Foltynewicz’s life – besides the uniform – is that he will be in the National League and swinging the bat again. He was quite a hitter at Minooka, “but it’s been five-six years,” he noted.

“A lot of friends have been saying, ‘Hey, you’ll be hitting now.’ I have to work on that.

I don’t want to embarrass myself trying to hit against major league pitching.”

Minooka has scheduled a ceremony to retire Foltynewicz’s high school jersey number. That event is set for the night of Jan. 30, when the Indians’ boys basketball team entertains Plainfield East.

Foltynewicz said he plans to attend. It will be a good opportunity for his former teammates, classmates and coaches to wish him well as he begins his career with the Atlanta Braves.

By TIM CRONIN Shaw Media Correspondent ROMEOVILLE – Shakespeare wouldn’t know what to write about the No. 1-ranked Lewis University women’s basketball team. Easy lie the heads that wear this crown.

“It’s a lot of fun,” guard Kristin Itschner said of the top ranking in NCAA Division II after the Flyers’ 91-57 victory Thursday over McKendree University. “It’s exciting. I don’t find it to be pressure. I look at it as we have to come out every day as hard as we can.”

Itschner led the Flyers with 20 points on a night when Lewis (16-0, 6-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference) could do little wrong, displaying from start to finish the precision passing game that has gotten it to the top.

The Flyers recorded a season-high 27 assists, including assists on eight of their first 10 baskets, en route to their 32nd straight victory in Neil Carey Arena. They built a 22-6 lead

in that opening outburst, after which McKendree (1-12, 0-5) was in catch-up mode. Lewis’ 42-31 rebounding edge, and shooting 71 percent in the first half, kept the Bobcats from catching up.

“This is when we’re at our best, when we do those things on both ends of the floor,” Flyers coach Lisa Carlsen said.

She saw the game as a rededication of the solid play that had kept the Flyers undefeated and moved them up the rankings since the beginning of the season. They opened No. 9 and had been No. 2 since Dec. 9.

“I don’t think we’ve gotten away from it, but I think it’s a good time of the season to really remind ourselves what got us to this point,” Carlsen said.

“Sometimes, we can get caught up in different things that distract us from doing what we do.”

But No. 1 is not a distraction.

“We’re lucky to have some seasoned veterans that understand how difficult it is to get

where we want to get,” said Carlsen, noting, as do the players, that an NCAA championship is the ultimate goal.

“We know we’re going to get everybody’s best shot,” said Jamie Johnson, who scored 18 points and handed out six assists. “With every game, we try to do something different.

We’re definitely improving.”

Mariyah Brawner-Henley scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for Lewis; and Jess Reinhart (12 points) and Alexus Grayer (10) more than offset McKendree’s leaders, Caty Ponce (14) and Minooka grad Gabrielle Williams (10).

Lewis collected 30 of 32 first-place votes in the new Division II poll, with Emporia State (13-1) getting the other two despite losing, and thus falling from No. 1 to No. 3, over the weekend.

The most difficult part of the season looms. After Saturday’s home game with Illinois-Springfield, the Flyers play seven of their last 11 on the road.

Lewis begins its ‘new season’ with a victory

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – After dropping two Great Lakes Valley Conference games to open a five-game homestand, the Lewis men’s basketball team was in need of a serious shot in the arm.

‘Twas the perfect time for a team leader to step up.

Senior Ryan Jackson, the Flyers’ season scoring leader, penetrated the McKendree defense to dish out seven assists in the first 10 minutes, eight in the first half and nine in all Thursday night as Lewis led, 54-34, at halftime en route to a 97-70 victory at Neil Carey Arena.

“Last weekend was rough,” Jackson said. “This is the way

we usually play in practice. If we work together, we get the job done. I’m proud of our effort.”

“The things Ryan was doing early on, we had gotten away from that,” Lewis coach Scott Trost said. “We were a selfish basketball team last week, we didn’t trust each other, and we started slow both games. Tonight, the energy was better, and we played with more of a purpose.”

Jackson’s previous season and career high for assists in a game was six. On this occasion, he assisted on the Flyers’ first five baskets before scoring one himself. He helped get his teammates out and running after defensive stops as Lewis scored 33 points in the first 10 minutes on 11-of-16

shooting.

The Flyers (11-3, 3-2) led, 33-21, at that point and lengthened their lead the rest of the half with the help of improved defense.

Meanwhile, they were shooting 62.1 percent at halftime on 18 of 29, were 5 of 11 from 3-point range and hit 13 of 14 free throws.

Max Strus finished the half with 13 of his team-high 24 points, Jackson had 10 of his 14, Jeff Jarosz eight of his 13, David Niggins seven of his 14, and Brad Foster and Kyle Nelson – who missed last week’s two games with a shoulder injury – both chipped in six of their eight. All the scorers benefited from teammates’ generosity as Lewis accumulated 14 assists in the half.

Foster, a junior from Lincoln-Way Central, played off the early energy, rolling to the basket, taking a feed from Jackson and slamming the ball home for the game’s first points.

“All week were saying we had to bring energy,” Foster said. “I guess that was my idea of the best way to do that.

The Flyers totaled 21 assists on the night, eclipsing their season high mark of 19 against Malone. They also topped their season-high point mark of 96 against Cedarville and shot .586 from floor, hit 11 of 23 threes and made 18 of 20 free throws.

“We know we can score,”

said Strus, a freshman who swished 4 of 6 from beyond the arc and had two monster dunks. “Our defense definitely has to get better, though.”

“I want to give a shout-out to my young boy, the freshman,” Jackson said, nodding toward Strus.

McKendree (8-5, 1-4) never got closer than 17 points in the second half.

“There is a fine line between winning and losing, and we did make shots,” Trost said. “The good thing was we did some good things to get good shots.

“I told the guys, the way we have to look at this is we’re 1-0 in the new season. Obviously, we are good enough to play like that, but we still have to guard better.”

MORRIS – For the first half of the first quarter Thursday night, the Morris boys basketball team couldn’t score against DeKalb. The Barbs jumped out to a 9-0 lead before Jake Walker hit a 3-pointer for Morris to make it 9-3 with 4:03 to play in the quarter.

After that, however, the Redskins had little trouble finding the basket, especially Austin Patterson. Patterson made the first seven 3-point shots he attempted and finished 9-of-12 from 3-point range as Morris rallied but eventually lost a 51-49 Northern Illinois Big 12 East decision.

After the 9-0 deficit, Morris began chipping away, closing to within 15-8 by the end of the first quarter. Patterson drained four 3-pointers in the second quarter, and Walker hit one just before the buzzer to tie the game at 29 at halftime.

“At times, it seemed like it was like pulling teeth to get our guys to talk on the floor.

And our body language was poor. That’s part of the mental side of the game that we really need to work on. Now, we have a day to work on it before going up to Rochelle on Saturday.”

Patterson led all scorers with 27 points, while Walker scored 10 for the Redskins.

Manhattan Township Historical Society to host local hobby display Saturday

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MANHATTAN – When Andy Partak’s wife, Eileen, began making jewelry, she had trouble deciphering the chainmail part of the process and sought her husband’s assistance, Partak said.

As Partak helped Eileen, he thought, “This is neat,” and decided to make a Halberd chainmail shirt, like medieval knights might have worn. Partak, of Manhattan, will demonstrate his method Saturday at the Manhattan Township Historical Society’s hobby display.

“If people want to try it, they can sit right down and use my tools – no problem,” Partak said.

The tools and supplies are quite simple, Partak said, just electrical wire with the insulation stripped away, a pair of pliers and a cutter.

Any kids present that day may practice with the smaller rings Eileen will have available, Partak added.

It impressed Partak, a lifetime member of the society, that something as historical as chainmail still has modern applications. It’s a concept too easily shrugged off as old-fashioned in today’s world.

“Now that we live in a digital world,” Partak said, “let us not forget these manipulative skills that still have importance in our society.”

The hobby display is the fourth monthly event the historical society has hosted since it began renting the first floor of a historical building for its museum last year, said Mary Kay Cooper, secretary and former technology coordinator at Manhattan School District 114.

Past events at the museum have included a grand opening in October, a display of World War II memorabilia from a family with local ties in November, and a display of old-fashioned toys in December, Cooper said.

ity Juried Exhibit, running Wednesday through Feb. 22.

This is the fifth year that McCants’ work will be a part of this show. His works have won “Best of Photography” honors twice.

Black Creativity’s annual Juried Art exhibition is one

of the country’s oldest African-American art shows. The exhibition typically features more than 100 works of original art by both youth and adult artists of African descent from all over America.

McCants will show two powerful photographs taken

in West Africa: “Water Ways,” which was shot on an artery of the Niger river in Yola, Nigeria; and “Devoted,” shot in Yaoundé, the capital city of Cameroon.

The Museum of Science and Industry is at 5700 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago. The mu-

It is true, partner might have had only 11, but as we can see, there was no law against his holding more than that, up to 17 or so. North should have invited game and let partner make the final decision. If South had only 11 points, maybe three spades would have gone down, but if South had any extras, at least they would have reached their making game.

Yes, in this instance, South was not totally guilt-free. He should have tried for game with three clubs over two spades. For example, remove the diamond ace from the North hand, and four spades is still a wonderful contract. But North was more culpable than South.

Bid the value of your hand and let partner worry about his. With a fit, be optimistic; with a misfit, be cautious. **

Do not have sex until your antibiotic treatment is complete. Otherwise, you could spread the infection to your partner. (Your sexual partner or partners should be treated with antibiotics as well.)

Many people have gonorrhea and chlamydia at the same time. So if you are treated for gonorrhea, your doctor will probably also treat you for chlamydia. That means you may need to take two types of antibiotics.

Once you start taking antibiotics, infectious urethritis improves rapidly.

Even without treatment, symptoms usually go away within three months.

However, people continue to remain infectious and spread the bacteria to others, even when they have no symptoms.

Urethritis caused by injury or chemical irritation is rare. You do not need any specific treatment for this type of urethritis. The symptoms will go away if you avoid whatever it was that caused the problem.

In the meantime, your doctor may prescribe medication to ease your symptoms.

The bacteria that cause both gonococcal and non-gonococcal urethritis can spread if they are not diagnosed and treated – from a woman’s cervix to her fallopian tubes, for example. There, they can cause permanent scarring and infertility. They also can spread through the blood to other parts of the body, including the heart, liver and joints.

So if you have symptoms of urethritis, take them seriously and contact your doctor.

Dear Doctor K: The doctor says I have urethritis. How did I get it?

Dear Reader: Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body. Urethritis is quite common, both in men and women. It is more common in younger adults, because they are more likely to be sexually active with multiple partners.

Urethritis is usually caused by one of two types of sexually transmitted infections: Gonococcal urethritis is caused by the bacteria that cause gonorrhea. Gonorrhea is sometimes called clap. Gonorrhea infections are passed from person to person during sexual activity. This includes vaginal, oral and anal intercourse.

Non-gonococcal urethritis is caused by all sexually transmitted bacteria other than gonorrhea. The most frequent cause is a particular type of bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis.

You can prevent both of these infections by: • not having sex; • having sex with only one uninfected partner; • consistently using male latex condoms during sexual activity.

Much less often, urethritis results from a physical injury from something like a urinary catheter. Or it may occur because of exposure to a chemical in an antiseptic or a spermicide that causes irritation of the lining of the urethra.

Urethritis usually causes pain or burning during urination and an urge to urinate more frequently.

Another symptom is redness around the opening of the urethra. Men with infectious urethritis may have a yellow discharge from the urethra. Women are less likely than men to have symptoms from gonorrhea and chlamydia.

If you have infectious urethritis, you will be treated with antibiotics.

Dear Abby: My husband, “Fred,” lost a lung to cancer 14 years ago due to smoking.

He is one of the lucky ones to survive a deadly cancer.

Even though he has only one lung, he continues to smoke “secretly.” I have begged, offered in-house treatment, anything to get him to stop, to no avail.

What is troublesome is that Fred is in denial.

For the last several weeks, he has blamed his coughing and wheezing on “allergies.” He also chews nicotine gum nonstop. It’s expensive, but he uses it to get his nicotine fix when he’s around me, our family and friends.

I am angry, frustrated and sad that Fred has chosen cigarettes over having a chance to live, enjoy his grandchildren and grow old with me.

Sometimes I think he doesn’t deserve to still be on this earth because he disregards his health after nearly dying from complications after his lung surgery.

Fred is loving, warm, caring and intelligent – except when it comes to his health. What can I do short of leaving him? – Miserable

I have asked them to please either knock or use the doorbell and wait to be let in when dropping by unannounced like anyone else would do. My brother has graciously honored my request. My sister thinks that because she was given a key she has the right to unlock the door and come into our home whenever she wants to.

I find what she’s doing intrusive and upsetting.

How can I get her to respect my wishes and honor my privacy in my own home?
