bstanley@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Police believe the frozen body found by a surveyor Tuesday morning is a man who walked away from the hospital in November.

About 8:45 a.m. a surveyor conducting an environmental survey found a body laying in a field off the

1000 block of Windham Parkway – near the north frontage road of Interstate 55, Lt. Mike Rompa said.

A deputy Will County Coroner removed the body, which Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil described as “frozen.”

Rompa said investigators believe it is the same man who discharged himself from Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital on Nov. 10 “against the medical staff’s advice.”

The man, who was being treated for a medical condition, left on foot, Rompa said.

Rompa said the man’s last known contact outside the hospital was with a Geneva resident, who later filed a missing persons report with that department.

O’Neil said an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death once the body is able to thaw.

A new law that went into effect Jan. 1 allows those who are 17 now, or who will be 17 years old on the date of the immediately following General Election, can register and vote in the General Primary Election.

The County Clerk’s Office, 302 N. Chicago St. in Joliet, is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office will remain open until 6 p.m. Feb. 18. to accommodate those who cannot come in during regular business hours. The office is closed Jan. 20 be-

Two forms of identification are necessary – one must show current name and address; second identification can be name only.

Community blood drive set for Feb. 5 A local mother whose daughter benefitted from

blood transfusions will partner with the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office and Heartland Blood Centers to run a community blood drive in February.

The drive will be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 5 at the State’s Attorney’s Office, 121 N. Chicago St., Joliet, according to a news release. Mobile coaches with Heartland Blood Centers will be parked in the office lot across the street from the Rialto Square Theater.

Jennifer Babec, whose daughter required 22 blood transfusions that aided her battle against lymphoma, will assist with the blood drive.

Her daughter’s cancer is in remission and Babec currently works as Heartland Blood Centers’ top volunteer coordinator,

according to the news release.

Since 2012, the state’s attorney’s office has been running blood drives with Heartland Blood Centers, which is the sole provider of blood and blood products for Silver Cross Hospital and Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

“We are happy to work with such great partners to provide blood for people in their time of need,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said in a news release.

Walk-in donors also are welcome on the day of the blood drive.

DOWNTOWN JOLIET PLANS PITCHED City officials hear finalists’ presentations; decision to be made by end of month

JOLIET – Six consultants on Wednesday presented their ideas for a better downtown Joliet, including fewer oneway streets, more riverfront development and filling vacant buildings.

Officials admit there are no quick fixes when it comes to revitalizing downtown.

That’s why in November the city of Joliet, along with the City Center Partnership, issued a request for a downtown plan, which asked for contractors to outline how they would provide a number of services, ranging from an economic analysis and urban planning to vehicle circulation and public realm design.

Thirteen contractors submitted proposals, and Wednesday the six finalists, Teska and Associates, Camiros, Houseal Lavigne Associates, Ratio Architects, The Lakota Group and Etera Design Studio, gave public presentations of their plans.

“They’re all very experienced consulting teams,” Joliet planning director Kendall Jackson said of the six finalists.

“They demonstrated experience and expertise in types of plans that we want. That’s what separated them from the field.”

The proposals outlined a number of improvements and enhancements to downtown, some of which included reducing the number of one-way streets, better utilizing available space and preserving – and filling – vacant buildings.

“We have a jewel here in downtown Joliet,” Councilman John Gerl said. “We really do.

There’s so much opportunity.

All we have to do is really formalize a business plan.”

Teska and Associates said one key to revitalizing down-

town is to focus on Chicago Street by allowing it to run through downtown.

“It’s important for us to make sure Chicago Street goes through,” Gerl said. “We’ve got some issues to work out. … It could be the LaSalle Street, if you will, of Joliet.”

Houseal Lavigne Associates mentioned that Joliet has a number of unique attractions, from the casino to the Rialto Square Theatre, but isn’t doing a good enough job of keeping people downtown. Once people are finished visiting certain attractions, the city needs to give them more reasons to stay downtown, the group said.

“We’ve got a lot of great things going with the [Joliet] Junior College building and the new transportation center,” Mayor Tom Giarrante said. “We think with this plan, and once those amenities get done, it’s going to bring people downtown and they will be looking for places to stay, and hopefully we can build some apartments and condos.”

The Camiros group said it’s important to make downtown Joliet a “third place” for people to want to go, after home and work. Bringing more activities and entertainment to the area are a must, and one way to do that is by making better use of riverfront space.

“I’d like to see a core to the city,” Gerl said. “A place where there’s a gathering point. If we have bands downtown or if we have our New Orleans North that we did last summer, [downtown] would be the core of Joliet where people would meet to have large events.”

Pam Owens, executive director of the City Center Partnership, wouldn’t comment on how much the city expects to budget for the plan, but said the proposals ranged from the low $100,000s to upward of $400,000.

The committee first judged the groups based on the content of their plans, and then factored in cost, Owens said.

“We were able to judge the proposals based on their merit first and not their cost,” she said. “A couple of the teams here today were the top-rated ones and were still within our budget.”

The city and the City Center Partnership are expected to

make a final selection in late January and send a recommendation to the City Council

by Feb. 4. After a consultant is hired, the process for the Downtown Plan will involve further public and stakeholder input, Owens said.

Owens said she was pleased with what she has seen from the plans, especially when it comes to attracting businesses to downtown.

“I see the concept of downtown as being an appropriate place to incubate new businesses,” Owens said. “Businesses that may exist, whether that be in a spare room or a basement, once they’re ready to be in an actual bricks and mortar building, downtown is that logical place for them to be. We should be the nurturing counter for those types of new startup businesses.”

Plainfield mayor: Tax levy flat, water rates up Collins gives State of the Village address at chamber function

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com YORKVILLE – Plainfield Mayor Mike Collins brought Plainfield leaders and residents up to speed on the village’s projects and happenings – including business development, tax changes and road construction for the next year – during his State of the Village address Wednesday at a luncheon in Yorkville’s Whitetail Ridge Golf Club.

“The plan is moving forward, and I think we’re going to be real pleased with it,” Collins said, mentioning the strategic plan and outlook of the village.

The luncheon was hosted by the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce, which also announced its annual award winners.

Collins said the 2013 tax levy is staying unchanged at $5.3 million.

“Village residents on average will not see an increase in the village portion of their property taxes compared to 2012,” Collins said.

But village residents will continue to see increasing water rates.

“The village has not been able to keep pace though with the increases of the Lake Michigan water supplier, the city of Chicago, which has raised its rates the past three years,” Collins said, adding that the rates are being phased in rather than dumped on the residents.

The average water bill will increase $4.40 a month, Collin said. But the village is offering senior discounts.

“All the funds used to improve the riverfront are from donations, and there are no taxes involved,” Collins said, crediting the success of the foundation’s fundraisers to the hard work of organizers.

Collins liked the progress being made on road construction in the village, but he hinted at future congestion on Route 30.

Restructuring of the Route 30 and Interstate 55 interchange shouldn’t affect residents too much, Collins said. But other Route 30 construction will be more troublesome.

Route 30 from I-55 to Renwick Road will be expanded to four lanes.

Renwick Road will also be expanded to include a reversible lane near the area.

“It’ll be time well spent but you’re going to have to bear

with us,” Collins said, noting the construction will last more than a year.

Local business owners appeared confident in the village’s direction after the public address.

“There are a lot of new businesses coming to town and the downtown looks better,” said Don Kinley, fourth generation owner of the long-standing Lincoln Way Barber Shop downtown. “The village changes have helped our business.

There’s a lot of other places to get a haircut that have been coming, but business is fine.”

Raising awareness Heroin forum educates residents about ‘the drug of choice’

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Curiosity and concern compelled parents Julie and Tom Taylor to attend the heroin forum held at the Coal City High School Auditorium on Wednesday night.

“We have two kids – one is in the 20s and the other is 14,” said Julie Taylor before the event began. “We’ve heard a lot of stuff about people getting in trouble with it. We just want to know what to look for so we can keep our eyes open.”

Parents, health professionals, state representatives and community members from across the county came to the forum, which addressed heroin abuse, side effects, treatment and the penalties for possession and distribution of it.

A panel of experts and speakers also informed attendees about spotting signs of heroin use and addiction and what to do

if they suspect someone is using.

“I drove a long way to be here because it’s really important – really important – to get the word out,” said speaker John Roberts, who co-founded the Heroin Epidemic Relief Organization after losing his 19-year-old son, Billy, to a heroin overdose in 2009. “It’s out there and I’ve been a personal witness to it.”

Roberts, a retired Captain in the Chicago Police Department, spoke frankly about the unexpected loss of his son and how heroin trafficking has sprawled from Chicago to quiet suburbs and rural communities across Illinois.

Roberts said heroin has become “the drug of choice” for much of the Chicago area.

“It’s creeping into this community and it’s going to take your kids from you,” Roberts said. “We need to push back.”

gler – a senior addictions counselor at Rosecrance, Harrison Campus, in Rockford – provided statistics about the physical and mental effects of addiction and resources on where to get help.

He reminded the audience that heroin addiction is a disease and not a personal choice, so treatment must involve more than just quitting the drug.

“We need to recognize what’s going on in their life that led to the addiction,” Spangler said.

He said they often give their patients pharmaceutical drugs that can block receptors in the body to prevent a heroin high, but stressed that quitting the drug isn’t enough and patients must have intensive counseling as well.

“It’s not just as easy as quitting the drug,” Spangler said. “That’s pulling a piece out, but now, we need to replace it.”

were given time to answer some questions submitted by the audience.

Overheated boiler cancels classes for a day at Gardner-South

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN– VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Firefighters spent most of Wednesday morning working a fire that destroyed much of a local chiropractic clinic.

Just before 6:30 a.m. the Coal City Fire Protection District was called to a structure fire at the Lardi Chiropractic Clinic on the 400 block of east First Street in Coal City, Coal City Fire District spokesman Nick Doerfler said.

The fire was under control between 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., but firefighters

were on scene until about 12:45 p.m. The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System 15 investigators were called to the scene.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Doerfler said, but about $500,000 worth of damage was done. The clinic is in a former church that has an addition on it, he said.

The fire destroyed the addition.

On arrival there was heavy smoke coming from the structure. The building was empty, but the fierce fire caused the firefighters to switch to a defensive attack.

“We used a lot of water

from the city’s water supply. (The city) requested we shut down the hydrant use so we had to bring in tenders,” he said.

So much municipal water was used the city’s water towers were running low, so additional resources had to be called in, Doerfler said.

The call alerting firefighters to the blaze came in from an employee who was opening the facility for the day and saw the smoke.

No one was injured and multiple agencies assisted Coal City from throughout the area due to the need for water tenders.

GARDNER – A boiler that overheated Wednesday at Gardner-South Wilmington High School caused school to be canceled, but classes were planned to resume as scheduled Thursday.

Between 4:30 and 5 a.m. Wednesday, the Gardner Fire Protection District was called to Gardner-South Wilmington High School where firefighters found smoke in the hallways, Chief Terry Jensen said.

room and instead of the boiler shutting off, it continued to heat, he said, so the boiler overheated.

When firefighters entered the room the temperature was between 800 and 1,000 degrees.

“We initiated ventilation maintenance on scene,” Jensen said.

The boiler room received extensive damage.

No one was injured and no one was in the school at the time.

The school is operating on its secondary boiler, Superintendent Michael Perrott said, and will continue to until the other one can be repaired.

“It’s nice and warm in the school and we are in good shape.”

Housing authority eyes redevelopment Des Plaines Garden, Fairview are possibilities JOLIET – The Housing Authority of Joliet may know in the coming months if the federal government will approve an initial application for assistance with the redevelopment of public housing complexes.

At Wednesday’s board meeting, Housing Authority board members discussed a preliminary application they submitted Dec. 30 for a Rental Assistance Demonstration program, said Michael Simelton, chief executive officer for the housing authority.

Housing Authority officials are examining the possibilities of redeveloping the Des Plaines Garden Homes and Fairview Homes apartment complexes.

Under the Rental Assistance Demonstration program, the U.S. Department

of Housing and Urban Development would provide financial tools that would make it possible for the housing authority to redevelop Des Plaines Garden and create federally subsidized Section 8 apartments.

Simelton said the Housing Authority may know the results within 60 to 90 days after HUD is finished reviewing the application.

However, even if the preliminary application is approved, a complete one may not be submitted.

“Even if [HUD] approves of it, that doesn’t mean we have to go forward,” he said.

Housing Authority officials have yet to put together a plan to redevelop Fairview, which is under a review process that may result in approval of the property’s demolition by HUD. Simelton said the agency needs to do a physical needs assessment to see if it would be feasible

to completely redevelop the property or do maintenance improvements instead.

The redevelopment of Des Plaines Garden and Fairview might make the housing authority less dependent on HUD for funding. Simelton has said if Fairview is torn down, Housing Authority officials would find a new location for replacement housing because the current property is too far from stores, services and public transportation.

The agency’s current planning for Fairview and Des Plaines Garden isn’t the first time it sought redevelopment for the two housing complexes.

In 2007, the agency tore down its Poole Gardens project and replaced it with Liberty Meadow Estates mixed-income subdivision.

Housing authority officials wanted demolition of the Fairview and Des Plaines Garden at the time.

Crest Hill to receive new waste service CREST HILL – Starting May 1, Crest Hill residents will

receive new automated trash and recycling services as part of a contract with Allied Waste/Republic Services.

Allied Waste/Republic Services will deliver one 96-gallon cart for trash and one 96-gallon cart for recycling. Residents can trade their cart for a smaller 65 gallon or 35 gallon cart if the 96 gallon cart does not suit their particular needs.

Directions on how to use the new cart program will be provided at delivery, before the May 1 start date.

Recycling will be every other week and yard waste will continue to be on regular trash pickup day. If residents want to get rid of their old containers they can place them at the curb on pickup day and leave a note saying to take the containers.

Residents who have questions should contact the city’s water department at 815-741-5104.

Canine rescue group to hold fundraiser

MORRIS – The Morris Water Department inside the Morris Municipal Services Facility will be closed for a computer upgrade Jan. 31 through Feb. 3 and will reopen at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 3.

In addition, the city’s web-payment services will be unavailable from 4:30 p.m. Jan. 30 through 12:30 p.m. Feb. 3. At 12:30 p.m.

Feb. 3 the web service will be available again. This is a necessary upgrade to the system and will enable the city to better serve its customers.

Water department to close for upgrade

2 questioned in shooting

Spokesman Dan Ferrelli said the 18- and 19-year-old men were taken into custody about 1:45 p.m. in Cicero. They had not been formally charged as of 5 p.m. Wednesday.

About 7:35 p.m. Monday, Arin T. Williams, 20, and two men arrived together at La Torta, a

Mexican restaurant in the 800 block of North Lake Street. Within a few minutes, the three went into the bathroom and began to fight. Williams was shot once in the head before the other men ran out.

Williams, of Aurora, was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead. Ferrelli said other customers were in the restaurant at the time “Police believe the murder to be narcotics-related,” Ferrelli said.

Grundy County honors employees’ years of service

The county annually recognizes employees at service marks in five-year increments, beginning at five years of service.

“The constancy of our long-term employees – whether hired, appointed or elected – are often the backbone of our success,” Grundy County Personnel Committee Chairwoman Vicki Geiger said during Tuesday’s county board meeting. “These are the people we would like to thank and recognize this evening.”

Each employee was recognized and introduced by someone from their department. Employees who had served for five and 10 years were given a pin and certificate. Those with 15 years

of service were given a pin, certificate and $25 gift card, and those with 20 years were given a pin, certificate and $50 gift card.

Proposed sports complex leads Village Board talks

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – The Lemont Village Board held two meetings Monday, with the committee of the whole immediately following the regular meeting.

The board normally has its committee of the whole meeting the third Monday of the month, but the village will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Although it did not appear on the agenda for the evening, the proposed Lemont Sports Complex was still one of the most discussed issues.

Many residents expressed frustration over the board’s decision Jan. 6 to repeal an ordinance for public financing of the project, which also nixed a referendum on the matter.

Mayor Brian Reaves, who promised to give updates on the sports complex at every meeting, said the village will have answers to recent questions about the project posted on its website Thursday or Friday.

Village reacts to medical marijuana laws With medical marijuana laws in effect in the state,

the village is outlining where cultivation centers and dispensing organizations can be located in town.

Planning and Economic Development Director Charity Jones proposed an amendment to the Unified Development Ordinance that would restrict medical marijuana organizations to M-3 Heavy Manufacturing and M-4 Mineral Extraction zoning districts.

The state dictates cultivation centers must be 2,500 feet from any school or child care facility, and dispensing organizations must be 1,000 feet away.

The village is considering requiring both to be 1,000 from any cemetery, public park, forest preserve, public housing or place of public worship, and 500 feet from the downtown district.

Jones said the zoning is fairly restrictive. The village does not have any M-4 districts and a limited amount of M-3 districts.

If a medical marijuana organization wanted to open in Lemont, it would have to apply for a special use permit with the village, she said.

Proposed zoning for State Street property

Jones said a Planned Unit Development has been proposed for the property at 604-606 State St. that would allow residential and commercial use.

The property, which is currently zoned for residential, consists of a house and an empty office space owner John Ross would like to lease.

Ross initially asked for the property to be zoned for business use, but neighbors were concerned the house could be demolished for more commercial space if it became vacant.

The property still would be zoned for business use, but the PUD would put restrictions on how it could be developed, Jones said.

The house would be a nonconforming property in a business zone, which normally means it would no longer be able to be used as a residence if it was vacant for six months.

Jones said the PUD would extend that time period to 12 months.

Any further commercial development would have to be approved by the village, she said.

The proposal still needs to be approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Village Board.

NEWS BRIEF Foster requests Target inquiry JOLIET – Congressman Bill Foster, D-Naperville, is joining Democratic members of the Financial Services Committee in calling for an inquiry into the Target data breach that

led to personal information, including credit and debit card accounts, being compromised for millions of Americans.

Foster represents the 11th District, which includes Joliet. He has an office at 195 Springfield Ave. in Joliet.

He was joined by 17 Democratic members of the committee in sending a letter to Chairman Jeb Hensarling requesting a full committee hearing to investigate the data breach.

Monica J. Farr (nee Stratmann), age 68, of Shorewood, passed away Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center.

Born in Vincennes, Indiana, May 1, 1945, to the late Joseph and Dorothy (nee Grider) Stratmann, she had resided in the Shorewood/ Joliet area for many years. A long time member and former President of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Cantigny Post #367.

Survived by two daughters, Nancy (Mike) Ferraro and Sharon Henrichs; three grandchildren, Rider Winterbottom, Owen Henrichs and Arianna Ferraro; and one brother, Eric Stratmann.

Preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Leah Stratmann.

RACHEL HARPER Born: Dec. 25, 1918; Coatopa, AL Died: Jan. 11, 2014; Joliet, IL Rachel “Estella” Harper aka Plum, was born December 25, 1918 in Coatopa, AL to the late Ben and Mary Bell (Coleman) Jones and she was the sixth child born to this union.

She confessed Christ as her personal savior at an early age in Alabama, where she served on the Usher Board. After moving to Joliet, she joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church and continued to usher. She later joined St. Paul M.B. Church, where she was faithful in attendance as an usher until her health began to decline.

In 1940, Estella was united in marriage to the late Reverend Alonzo Barnett until his death. She later married, Isaiah Harper.

In 1945, the family moved from Laurel, MS to Joliet. Her first job in Joliet was a Hair Stylist. She followed her passion and became a cook for which she was well known for and employed by many of the local restaurants, one of them being Syl's. She also did some domestic work as well and later retired from Sunny Hill Nursing Home and Dairy Queen.

She lived a healthy life until she became ill in April 2013, and was then cared for by her niece, Bernice (Fred) Henderson until her death on January 11, 2014.

She is preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, one son, five brothers and five sisters.

DARREL G. RHIND Darrel G. Rhind, age 86, passed away Tuesday January 7, 2014, at his home, surrounded by family.

Survived by two daughters, Debra (Raul) Casales and Kathie (Grant) Pearson; two grandchildren, Sam and Jake Pearson; two sisters, Judith (Mike) Buell and Joan (Grant) Goolsby; brother, Warren (Thelma) Rhind. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

JOHN S. RUSS John S. Russ, age 65, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, January 14, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Geradette (nee Hankovack); his children, John J. John's greatest asset to his collection were his countless friends who are too numerous to mention but all held a special place in his heart.

John was a member of the Contractors Association of Will and Grundy Counties and the Moran Athletic Club. John was a loving husband and father who touched the lives of many and will never be forgotten.

LOUIS SCHULER Born: Aug. 13, 1918 ; Farmington, IL Died: Jan. 10, 2014; Gold Canyon, AZ Louie, age 95, Gold Canyon, AZ passed away peacefully on January 10, 2014.

He was born in Farmington, Illinois on August 13, 1918 to Lewis Shuler and Mabel Grace (Long) Shuler, the first of three sons.

With the help of his parents he earned his way through college during the Great Depression, graduating in 1941 with a B.S. degree from Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1943. While in the service, thanks to a summer thunderstorm which diverted his flight from Cheyenne to Denver, he met the first great love of his life, Mary Clara Boylan. They were married on December 27, 1945 and shared 45 wonderful years together. They were blessed with two loving sons, Prof. Michael L. Shuler, Ithaca, NY and Dr. Patrick J. Shuler, La Verne, CA. Louie was employed by the Army Ammunition Command Center, located in Joliet, Illinois, where he held various industrial engineering positions from 1946 to his retirement in 1971. He was awarded the Dept. of Army Meritorious Civilian Service award, (the army's second highest award for civilians) for his leadership in directing ammunition production during the Viet Nam war.

His retirement passion, to build a mountain home of his dreams, surrounded by the unmatched beauty of the Colorado Rocky

Mountains, was achieved and surpassed with the completion of "Paradise Found", truly a beautiful dream home on five acres of the prettiest land the Lord ever made.

In 1989, the 8000 foot elevation was too much for Mary, so they moved to Gold Canyon, AZ. On July 1994, he married the second great love of his life, Elizabeth (Liz) Malek, his devoted and loving wife for the rest of his life. Louie used to say, he was the luckiest man on earth, and credited finding Mary and Liz to a higher power that made it happen.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Mary; and brothers, Bob Shuler of Des Moines, Iowa and Max Shuler, Peoria, AZ. He is survived by his wife Liz; his sons Mike and Pat; four wonderful grandchildren, a great grandson, and step children, Don and Pat. Iowa State DL coach Curtis Bray dies at 43

By LUKE MEREDITH The Associated Press AMES, Iowa – Iowa State defensive line coach Curtis Bray died Wednesday, the team said. He was 43.

Cyclones spokesman Mike Green confirmed Bray’s death to The Associated Press, but said no additional details were immediately available.

“Curtis Bray was a dear friend to me and to all he ever came in contact with,” Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads said. “He was a trusted and loyal assistant coach who always put the kids and the team in front of his work. He was as genuine in his approach to relationships, coaching and life as anyone I have ever been associated with.

We will miss him dearly.”

Bray grew up in Monroeville, Pa. and became the first defensive player to be honored as the Gatorade national player of the year for Gateway High in 1987.

Bray graduated from Pitt in 1992 after a stellar career as a linebacker for the Panthers. He also coached at Duquesne, Western Kentucky and Villanova and later worked with Rhoads at Pittsburgh, where Bray spent seven seasons.

Bray was the linebackers coach when Rhoads was Pitt’s defensive coordinator. Bray followed Rhoads to Ames when he was named Iowa State’s head coach in 2009 after working on the staff at Temple.

“Curtis made indelible contributions as both a player and assistant coach at Pitt. His competitive nature on the field was only surpassed by his kind and gentle demeanor off of it ,” the University of Pittsburgh athletic department said in a statement. “Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and many loved ones. While Curtis will be greatly missed, he will not be forgotten by the many people he touched at Pitt.”

Senate panel: Benghazi attack was preventable

By KIMBERLY DOZIER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Both highly critical and bipartisan, a Senate report declared Wednesday that the deadly assault on the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, could have been prevented. The account spreads blame among the State Department, the military and U.S. intelligence for missing what now seem like obvious warning signs.

For the first time in

the much-politicized aftermath, the report also points at Ambassador Chris Stevens, who was killed in the attack. It says that the State Department ended a deal with the military to have a special operations team provide extra security in Libya, and that Stevens twice refused an offer to reinstate the team in the weeks before the Sept.

11, 2012, attack.

The military also takes criticism in the report for failing to respond more quickly on the night of the

assault.

On the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks in the U.S., armed militants stormed the diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, setting the building on fire. Stevens, information technology specialist Sean Smith, and CIA security contractors Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, both former Navy SEALs, were killed over the course of two battles that night.

Stevens died of smoke inhalation after he was taken to a “safe room” in the

besieged compound. The Obama administration, reluctant to deal publicly with a terror attack weeks before the presidential election, first described the assault as a spontaneous mob protest of an anti-Islamic, American-made video.

Such a protest did occur at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo earlier that day.

Officials corrected their description days after the attack, but by then it had become a hot political issue that has continued to dog the administration.

Obama’s NSA announcements just starting point for change

By JULIE PACE and STEPHEN BRAUN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama’s blueprint for overhauling the government’s sweeping surveillance program is just the starting point.

The reality is few changes could happen quickly without unlikely agreements from a divided Congress and federal judges.

The most contentious debate probably will be over the future of the National Security Agency’s bulk collection of telephone records from millions of Americans. In his highly anticipated speech on Friday, Obama is expected to back the idea of changing the program.

But he’ll leave the specifics to Congress, according to U.S. officials briefed on the White House review.

That puts key decisions in the hands of lawmak-

ers who are at odds over everything from whether the collections should continue to who should house the data.

Even a widely supported proposal to put an independent privacy advocate in the secretive court that approves spying on Americans is coming under intense scrutiny. Obama has indicated he’ll back the proposal, which was one of 46 recommendations he received from a White House-appointed commission. But a senior U.S. district judge declared this week that the advocate role was unnecessary, and other opponents have constitutional concerns about whether the advocate would have standing to appear in court.

The uncertain road ahead raises questions about the practical impact of the surveillance decisions Obama will announce in his speech at the

Justice Department. The intelligence community is pressing for the core of the spy programs to be left largely intact, while privacy advocates fear the president’s changes may be largely cosmetic.

Stephen Vladeck, a national security law expert at American University, said the key questions will be “how much of this reform conversation is going to be about curtailing the specific surveillance programs and how much of it is going to be instead about improving the checks and balances on the programs that already exist.”

Obama’s speech marks the end of a monthslong White House review spurred by former NSA analyst Edward Snowden’s revelations about the secret government surveillance programs both at home and abroad. The disclosures

restarted a dormant debate over surveillance – on Capitol Hill and among outraged allies overseas.

For Obama, changing the overseas spying program may well be easier than implementing domestic reforms. On its own, the administration can enact two international surveillance changes officials say the president supports: extending some privacy protections to foreign citizens and tightening the protocols for decisions on spying on foreign leaders. Still, it’s unclear whether those steps will be enough to soothe international anger.

One move that has gained support from both the president and lawmakers of both parties is the appointment of a public advocate to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which currently hears arguments only from the government.

On that issue, the report dives into the contentious initial talking points issued by the intelligence community, which helped fuel Republican allegations of an Obama administration cover-up of militant links to the violence.

“Intelligence analysts inaccurately referred to the presence of a protest at the U.S. mission facility before the attack based on open source information and limited intelligence, but without sufficient intelligence or eyewitness

statements to corroborate that assertion,” the report said, adding that U.S. intelligence then took too long to correct the error.

The senators also take the administration to task for failing to bring the attackers to justice more than a year later. They say the U.S. has identified several individuals responsible but can’t capture them because of limited intelligence capabilities in the region and limited cooperation by local governments.

Chicago clergy abuse files to be released CHICAGO – The Archdiocese of Chicago said Wednesday it will release 6,000 pages of documents detailing what it knows about decades of clergy sex abuse allegations and how it handled them, calling it an effort to “bring healing to the victims and their families.”

Victims’ attorneys, who have fought for years to hold the Catholic Church accountable for concealing crimes and sometimes reassigning priests to positions where they continued to molest children, said they expected to receive the documents Wednesday afternoon and make them public next week.

The nation’s third-largest archdiocese agreed to release complaints, personnel documents and other files for about 30 priests as part of settlements.

House passes $1.1T spending bill Iraqi army retakes

By ANDREW TAYLOR The Associated Press WASHINGTON – A $1.1 trillion spending bill for operating the government until just before next fall’s election steamed through the battle-weary House on Wednesday over tepid protests from tea party conservatives, driven by a bipartisan desire to restore painful cuts in domestic and defense programs and show disaffected voters that Congress can do its job.

The bill swept through the House on a 359-67 vote and was on track for a big Senate vote by week’s end.

Republicans voted for the bill by a 2½-1 margin, and just three Democrats were opposed.

virtually every agency of government and contains compromises on almost every one of its 1,582 pages. It covers the one-third of government spending subject to annual decisions

by Congress and the White House, programs that have absorbed the brunt of budget cuts racked up since Republicans reclaimed control of the House three years ago.

Excluded are the giant benefit programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and food stamps that run on autopilot and are increasingly driving the government deeper into debt.

To buy time for the Senate debate, Congress on Wednesday sent President Barack Obama a threeday funding bill in time to avert a scheduled shutdown at midnight. The Senate cleared that measure by an 86-14 vote.

The bill increases core agency spending by $26 billion over the fiscal 2013 year that began Oct. 1, after last year’s automatic spending cuts took them to $986 billion. But it’s $31 billion less than Congress passed last March before automatic cuts known as sequestration took effect.

The Pentagon faces a tight squeeze even as it avoids what would have been another $20 billion

wave of automatic cuts.

The Pentagon’s core budget is basically frozen at $487 billion after most accounts absorbed an 8 percent automatic cut last year. Adding $6 billion to Obama’s war request provides some relief to readiness accounts, however, though active duty troop levels would still be cut by 40,000 to 1.36 million. It includes $85 billion for overseas military operations, a slight cut from last year.

Domestic programs fare better and are kept, on average, at levels agreed to last year before the automatic cuts of 5 percent kicked in. Those broadly applied cuts, called sequestration, were triggered by Washington’s inability to follow up a 2011 deal with additional deficit savings.

North of the capital, a bomb tore through a funeral of an anti-al-Qaida Sunni militiaman, the deadliest in a series of attacks that killed at least 50 people nationwide.

Violence has risen sharply as extremist Islamic militants try to exploit growing anger among the Sunni minority over what they perceive as mistreatment and random arrests by the Shiite-led government.

Members of the al-Qaida linked group known as the State of Iraq and the Levant – emboldened by successes in the civil war raging next door in Syria – made a push to seize parts of the mainly Sunni Anbar province as violence erupted after the government arrested a Sunni lawmaker sought on terrorism charges on Dec. 28, then dismantled an anti-government Sunni protest camp in the provincial Ramadi.

Eradicating polio everywhere It has been three years since the last new case of polio was reported in India. The country can now be declared polio-free. India’s victory is an important milestone in the global effort to eliminate polio. In 2013, just 250 people were paralyzed by polio.

But the viral disease remains a threat. The World Health Organization reported 359 new polio cases as of Dec. 10, 2013, up from 213 in December 2012. And the number of countries where polio is present rose to eight from four between December 2012 and December 2013, with polio spreading out of Nigeria into the Horn of Africa and from Pakistan into the Middle East. Violent conflict and distrust of vaccination programs are to blame.

Cases of polio in Pakistan, where skepticism of vaccination efforts remains after the revelation that the United States Central Intelligence Agency used a fake vaccination program in its hunt for Osama bin Laden, rose to 85 in 2013 from 58 in 2012. The W.H.O. also reported 17 confirmed cases and 60 suspected cases of polio in 2013 in and along the borders of war-torn Syria, a country that had been free of polio for 14 years.

With eradication of polio so close, these nations need to redouble efforts to combat the disease. India can play a vital role. It has welcomed experts from polio-affected countries and has sent medical officers to Nigeria to help with eradication initiatives there.

Pakistan is also enhancing its efforts. It has raised the salaries of vaccinators, created police and army escorts to ensure their safety and enlisted mullahs and imams to calm fears that vaccination is a Western plot.

In the most violent polio-affected areas, warring factions and rebel groups must be persuaded to embrace Unicef’s strategy where they agree to cease hostilities long enough for health workers to reach vulnerable populations. India’s technical and logistical success and Pakistan’s efforts to enlist trusted local leaders are important examples to follow. All of these tactics will be necessary to eradicate polio in 2014 and to ensure that by 2018 this terrible virus is gone for good.

The Cincinnati Bengals’ successful and respected defensive coordinator, an NFL defensive coordinator since 2000 – the longest such tenure in the league – was named Wednesday to replace Leslie Frazier as the Minnesota VIEWS Vikings’ head coach.

Dick Joliet area Goss head coaches or managers in major professional sports? Tough to recall many.

Jack Hendricks managed the St. Louis Cardinals in 1918 and the Cincinnati Reds from 1924 until 1929.

The Minneapolis Lakers handed George Mikan the coaching reins in 1958, but that lasted less than a full season.

Lewis graduate John Boles managed the Florida Marlins in 1996 and again from 1999 until May of 2001.

Tom Haller, also a Lockport graduate, was a major league general manager but not a manager.

So, yes, Zimmer, 57 and with 20 NFL seasons on his resume, is in an exclusive fraternity.

You will hear it said how he is a tough coach with an abrupt style, but one players will run through the wall for.

A word of warning to the Bears and the NFC North: Watch out for the Vikings.

Vikings pick Zimmer as new coach THE ASSOCIATED PRESS MINNEAPOLIS – Mike Zimmer is finally a head coach in the NFL. The Minnesota Vikings think now is the time for the veteran defensive coordinator.

The Vikings have hired Zimmer, a Lock Port graduate, for their top coaching job, according to a person with knowledge of the process who spoke Wednesday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Zimmer’s contract had not been completed and the team had not announced the hiring.

News of the decision emerged early in the day, but the Vikings held off on publicizing it at all.

Their silence was strange, considering a report by ESPN that they had already requested and received permission from Cleveland to interview offensive coordinator Norv Turner for the same position in Minnesota. The top headline on the team website touted an area winner in the annual NFL Punt, Pass & Kick contest.

That doesn’t mean the Vikings weren’t delighted about the ninth head coach in their 54-year history. Tight end Kyle Rudolph, center John Sullivan and defensive end Brian Robison were among the players who expressed

Zimmer replaces Leslie Frazier, another former Bengals defensive coordinator who was fired Dec. 30 after the team finished 5-10-1 this season.

General manager Rick Spielman interviewed at least seven candidates. He and Vikings owners Zygi Wilf and Mark Wilf settled on the one who was widely considered around the league to be the most overdue for a head coaching job. Zimmer has interviewed for several vacancies in recent years, including this month with Tennessee.

The 57-year-old Zimmer played at Illinois State and spent 14 seasons coaching in the college ranks before being hired in 1994 as an assistant with Dallas. He got a Super Bowl ring the following season as defensive backs coach.

Then he became defensive coordinator of the Cowboys in 2000 and spent seven seasons at that post, the last four under coach Bill Parcells.

Zimmer led defenses in Dallas that operated in both the 4-3 and 3-4 alignments, including the 2003 group that surrendered the fewest yards in the league.

Zimmer makes it in NFL • GOSS Continued from page 20 “For fans of the Vikings, they’re excited about having a guy who from a personality standpoint is fiery and emotional,” said Providence graduate Pete Bercich, a former Notre Dame and Vikings linebacker, Vikings assistant coach and the color commentator on the team’s radio network since 2007.

“Nothing against Leslie (Frazier), but people like that (Zimmer) has an emotional side. People who have worked for him say he is huge on the accountability factor, and that’s very important.”

Bercich said he is curious who Zimmer will hire as his offensive coordinator. The talk in the Twin Cities is getting the quarterback situation right.

“But we also have to get more help on defense, and Zimmer has a wonderful track record as a defensive coach,” he said.

Bercich played for Tony Dungy, who “absolutely made players accountable, and he did it in a level way,” he said. “I played for Foge Fazio, who was a lot more intense.

“As a player, you want someone who makes you better. Zimmer’s track record is players have confidence in what he says. He is big on accountability.”

Zimmer, a 1974 Lockport graduate, was elected to the Porters’ Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. He was the Illini-Eight all-conference quarterback in 1972 and a sectional wrestling champion. He starred in baseball as a left-handed hitting catcher. His eight triples in 1974 at then-spacious Ed Flink Field stood as a school record.

He played quarterback briefly at Illinois State, switched to outside linebacker because of a thumb injury and had his playing career end with a neck injury.

The injuries were the bad news. The good news was he served on the ISU defensive staff as a junior and senior and jump-started what became a special coaching career.

Zimmer, whose son Adam worked on his staff this season as an assistant defensive backs coach for the Bengals, was in the national news for a tragic reason. His wife Vicki passed away unexpectedly Oct. 9, 2009, at age 50. She was a beloved figure in the Zimmer family and the entire Bengals’ family.

But through it all, Mike continued coaching the Bengals’ defense while keeping the faith that he one day would land that coveted head coaching position.

It finally came.

Joliet area sports fans are most familiar with Mike’s dad Bill, who is living in Florida. Bill, who played briefly with the San Francisco 49ers back in the day, coached Lockport football from 1960 to 93.

His teams won 170 games in those 34 seasons.

Much of that time, he also was the Porters’ head wrestling coach. Like his son, he is a rarity. He was elected to the Illinois High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in two sports.

Imagine the thrill with the Vikings hiring his son.

Vikings, Lions go own ways NFL north teams select

By HUB ARKUSH harkush@shawmedia.com Just when it looked like the search for NFC North head coaches could go on forever, the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings filled their open positions within 24 hours, going in completely different directions.

The Vikings added some Chicago area flavor with their choice of Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.

Zimmer is a graduate of Lockport High School, and Illinois State University, where he was recruited as a quarterback. Once at ISU, Zimmer was switched to linebacker and his pursuit of defense was born.

Zimmer was the defensive coordinator with the Cowboys in Dallas from 2000-06 and then left to join Bobby Petrino with the Falcons in 2007.

Following what Zimmer himself dubbed the “Petrino fiasco,” Zimmer took over the Bengals defense in 2008.

He is highly respected around the league and many general managers and head coaches have expressed surprise that Zimmer didn’t get his shot at a head coaching job sooner.

There was speculation that Vi-

kings general manager Rick Spielman might be leaning toward a switch to a 3-4 defense, but Zimmer is primarily a 4-3 guy and most likely will stay with that scheme in Minnesota.One of the issues Zimmer battled in securing his first head job is the trend of going with offensive-minded coaches.

But Spielman committed to finding the best head coaching candidate, not the best offensive or defensive coach, and the current success of former defensive coaches Bill Belichick, John Fox and Pete Carroll appear to have helped.

What impact might Zimmer’s Jim Caldwell hiring have on the Bears? Zimmer becomes the only defensive-oriented head coach in the NFC North as he joins Marc Trestman, Mike McCarthy and Jim Caldwell, the new hire in Detroit.

Zimmer should know the Bears fairly well after preparing for them in the opening game of 2013 and will almost certainly focus immediately on devising a scheme to stop Jay Cutler, Matt Forte, Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, as well as using it to compete with Aaron Rodgers, Eddie Lacy, Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb.

Caldwell to the Lions is a quality hire, but also a bit of a puzzle. It is no secret that Ken Whisenhunt, the new coach of the Tennessee Titans, was Detroit general manager Martin Mayhew’s first choice. It is not clear whether or not Caldwell was the second choice or possibly even third or fourth.

That said, Caldwell comes with head coaching experience and a 2622 record, 2-2 in the playoffs. Caldwell guided the Indianapolis Colts to a Super Bowl in his first season as Tony Dungy’s successor. In fact, his Colts were 14-0 when, under instructions from general manager Bill Polian and owner Jim Irsay, he rested his starters and dropped his last two games before the playoffs.

Caldwell did succeed in getting the Colts to the Super Bowl, where they were beaten by the New Orleans Saints.

Caldwell’s Colts went 10-6 in 2010 and then, with Peyton Manning on injured reserve, fell to 2-14 in 2011 leading to Caldwell’s firing.

How might he impact the Bears?

The Lions are thought to be talented enough to contend right now, but lacking in discipline and leadership.

What is ironic about the Caldwell hiring is some thought he may have lacked some leadership and discipline as the Colts spiraled in 2011 with Manning on the bench.

After one tumultuous year as the defensive coordinator for Atlanta, when Falcons coach Bobby Petrino quit midseason in 2007, Zimmer went to Cincinnati to work for coach Marvin Lewis. In 2009, when his wife, Vikki, unexpectedly died, Zimmer was named the winner of several NFL assistant coach of the

year awards.

Zimmer has a fiery personality, as evidenced by his profanity-laced appearances on HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” which featured the Bengals in 2009 and 2013. That overt intensity is a contrast to Frazier, who went 21-33-1 in three-plus seasons with one appearance in the playoffs.

Frazier was a popular figure in the locker room and throughout the organization, but as a former defensive coach his area of expertise became the team’s biggest downfall. Despite a carousel at quarterback, the aged, injury-depleted defense was mostly responsible

for the sorry showing this season.

The Vikings allowed an average of 30 points per game, the most in the league, and 397.8 yards a game, the second-most.

Five of the seven reported candidates who interviewed for the vacancy had defensive backgrounds: Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Cleveland defensive coordinator Ray Horton, Arizona defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, San Francisco defensive line coach Jim Tomsula and Zimmer. The other two were offensive coordinators: Seattle’s Darrell Bevell and San Francisco’s Greg Roman.

Lockport boys swim to dual victory over Joliet Sectional in sights for both Joliet and Lockport

That was the message relayed by two first-year head coaches at the Lockport-Joliet Township boys swimming dual meet Wednesday evening.

For the Lockport boys swimming and diving team, head coach Jason Ozbolt believes a rigorous schedule in the beginning of the season – including the Nequa Valley Invite on Dec. 21, New Trier Diving Invite on Jan. 11 and Evanston Swimming Invite on Jan. 11 – will prepare the team for the postseason competition.

Ozbolt emphasized that the Porters must pinpoint their strengths and weaknesses by IHSA sectional Feb. 22 or else jeopardize a chance to compete at state on the successive weekend.

“Ultimately, we are

focused on the sectional meet,” said Ozbolt. “You can only qualify for the state finals meet by performing well at sectionals.

So we need to be peaking and at our best come playoff time.

“What we do – and what a lot of other teams also do – is, everything we do the whole year culminates in that sectional meet.”

The Joliet Township boys swimming and diving team has similar goals of placing well at sectional and competing at the state final.

But for Joliet, the challenge has always been a numbers game.

With a team of just 10 varsity swimmers comprised from both Joliet Central and Joliet West, head coach Cameron Barnish knows the team may not be competitive at every dual meet but reiterates that their success is based upon improving personal and relay times.

in all three relays, and senior Jacob Speechley placed first in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. Adam Nasinski also won two events – the 500-yard free and the 200yard free.

“I think our hard work and preparation is paying off,” said Speechley, who used Wednesday’s dual meet to improve some of

his weaker events. “This is all leading up to the sectional race, and the whole team is really looking forward to the event.”

Petrick’s big 2013 leads to organizational honor

By MARK JOHNSON mjohnson@shawmedia.com There were signs that Zach Petrick would be named the St. Louis Cardinals’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year before it actually happened in mid-December.

CardinalsFarm, a website independent of the organization, declared Petrick the winner of its own pitcher of the year award in October. And his 1.99 ERA, which came over 34 appearances at three levels, was the lowest in the system by more than a half-run among pitchers with more than 70 innings pitched.

Still, the call Petrick received from Cardinals Director of Player Development Gary LaRocque informing him of the honor was unexpected.

“When [LaRocque] told me the good news, I was very overwhelmed,” Petrick said. “With some of the names that were going

The award is a punctuation mark on a season during which Petrick exceeded his most optimistic goals. The Morris native,

who signed with the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in 2012, entered 2013 hoping for a full-season assignment. He attained one, at low-A Peoria, to begin the year; by its conclusion, he was pitching two levels higher, at Double-A Spring-

field.

Between three levels – Petrick’s season included a stint at high-A Palm Beach – he had a 1.99 ERA, 122 strikeouts, 27 walks and four home runs allowed in 113 1/3 innings pitched.

Petrick made 13 starts among his 34 appearances, winning seven of 10 decisions. He also earned eight saves.

“Zach moved through Peoria and Palm Beach quickly, making the jump to a starting role at Springfield and showing production at all three levels,” LaRocque said in a news release.

At Peoria, all 16 appearances Petrick made were in relief. It was at Palm Beach that the organization decided to begin using him as a starter. His first five appearances there were out of the bullpen. After that, Petrick never pitched in relief again, starting four times for Palm Beach and nine times for Springfield.

Stroud coaching Former Providence and Western

Michigan University pitcher Brian Stroud, who pitched two professional seasons in the Detroit Tigers organization after being drafted in 2011, will return to Western Michigan to complete his bachelor’s degree and serve as a student assistant coach.

“Brian is without question one of the most competitive players I have ever had the privilege of coaching,” Western Michigan coach Billy Gemon said. “He had a spectacular season for us in 2011 as the ace of our staff and was a major factor in our return to the MAC Tournament.”

Stroud ranks third all time at Western Michigan with 210 career strikeouts and fourth in career inning pitched with 255 2/3, spanning three seasons.

His 101 1/3 innings pitched in 2011 ranks third and his 74 strikeouts that year ranks in the top 15.

Does defense win championships anymore?

TAKE 2 Tom Musick and Hub Arkush face off After this weekend’s conference title games, the Super Bowl matchup will be set. Shaw Media’s Hub Arkush and Tom Musick discuss:

Musick: This weekend’s games should be terrific. In the AFC, I see big-time offense: New England at Denver. In the NFC, I see big-time defense: San Francisco at Seattle. So if you had to pick only one – offense or defense – which would be more important to building a Super Bowl winner?

Arkush: Thanks a lot Tom, Bears fans are finally giddy over their offense for the first time since Papa Bear and Sid Luckman gave them the T-formation, and now I get to go throw cold water on their parade.

OK, hate me if you want, guys, but there is no question defense still wins titles in the NFL. Consider this little factoid – of the top 11 scoring defenses in the NFL this year, nine were in the playoffs. The top four scoring defenses in the league were Seattle, Carolina, San Francisco and New Orleans. And who were the last four NFC teams fighting for a spot in the Super Bowl?

This one’s a slam dunk!

Musick: That’s a strong argument, Hub, but I try never to let facts get in the way of a

good opinion. So here’s my counter-argument: Times have changed, and rules have changed, and offense is more important than ever in the NFL. If I’m a general manager, I’d rather have an elite offense and an average defense than the other way around. It’s no coincidence that the two heavyweights remaining in the AFC are Denver (No. 1 in the NFL in scoring) and New England (tied for No. 2).

Arkush: Ah, Tomasso, Tomasso, what am I going to do with you?

Yes, there is more offense than ever in the NFL because the powers-thatbe keep changing the rules to help all the little wussy boys on offense try and catch up with all the killers on “D!” Sometimes it’s fun to watch and sometimes teams win games 45-42.

And then both those teams stay home and watch the playoffs on TV. I believe the question was what’s more important to winning a Super Bowl, O or D. Another little fact to get in the way of your fun: Going into Sunday, only two of the top 5 scoring teams in these playoffs are still playing. They are the Chiefs, Colts, Patriots, Broncos and Eagles, in that order, and they are a combined 5-3 with K.C. and Philly one and done.

The top five defenses are

the Seahawks, Niners, Chargers, Broncos and Pats. They’re 6-1 and all but San Diego are still playing, and two will be in the Super Bowl.

Musick: Hey, take it easy on us little wussy boys, or else I’ll, um, uh, I’ll call my mom! Your statistics are nice and all, but the only numbers I really care about are the ones on the scoreboard at the end of the game. And when I look at three of the past four Super Bowls, the winning team has scored 30-plus points. And when I look at the past 10 Super Bowl MVPs, each and every one of them plays offense. You can have Larry Brown and Dexter Jackson, I’ll take Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.

Arkush: OK, maybe wussy was a little out of bounds, but “Hey dude, it’s right there in front of you and flying right over your head.” When winning teams score over 30 points it’s because the other team’s defense wasn’t good enough to stop them while their defense did hold the other guys down. Maybe I can sell you this at least. There are all kinds of ways to score points: great offense, breakdowns by the other guys’ defense, your defense can score, and there are just lucky bounces. But how many ways are there to keep the other team from scoring, and beating you?

Musick: Uno, mi amigo. You line up in the right position, you hit somebody hard, and you hope that the referee doesn’t throw a flag from atop Offense Mountain.

It’s not a ridiculous premise to think the Bears could have two new starters at defensive end next season. Likely? No, but changes are on the way at a crucial position.

Corey Wootton, who spent most of the 2013 season at three-technique, is a free agent, but should be one of the top priorities to bring back. The Bears all but admitted that Shea McClellin’s position is not defensive end and Julius Peppers’ cap number makes him a question mark to return.

The franchise tag for defensive ends is expensive, projected to be near $12.5 million. That could prevent other teams from using it, allowing players to hit the market.

Last offseason was not fruit-

ful for free-agent defensive ends looking to cash in – Cliff Avril got a two-year, $13 million deal.

General manager Phil Emery and defensive coordinator Mel Tucker will have some very good options in free agency if the Bears want to write a big check for a D-end – seven of the top 16 4-3 defensive ends, as rated by Pro Football Focus, are set to hit free agency.

We’ll assume the Bears remain in a 4-3 base defense when looking at five defensive ends that could help upgrade the pass rush, and that the stud of the class expected to get the biggest haul, Greg Hardy, is out of the Bears’ price range.

Justin Tuck: In his ninth NFL season, Tuck had 11 sacks and 21 QB hits. The Bears’ top three defensive ends combined for 24 hits of the quarterback. Tuck is the one on this list who would qualify as a veteran for a short-

term deal that wouldn’t break the bank. He turns 31 in March, is a locker room leader and has missed only five games in the past seven seasons.

Michael Bennett: Martellus Bennett has said he will do his best to recruit his brother Michael.

Playing on a one-year, $4.8 million contract in Seattle, Bennett had 8.5 sacks and 25 QB hits in 2013.

His plus-20.9 pass-rush grade was third on PFF among 4-3 defensive ends. Bennett, 28, didn’t get a long-term deal last free agency, and would probably want one this time around.

Michael Johnson: Johnson played on the franchise tag last season, and isn’t expected to get it from the Bengals again. His sack numbers dipped, which could bring down his price tag.

Still, Johnson was ranked fourth overall on PFF and second in run defense with a +21.2, but had only

3.5 sacks to go along with 23 quarterback hits.

Lamarr Houston: He told reporters he is unsure if the Raiders want to re-sign him, but coach Dennis Allen said he’d love to have Houston back. In 2013, Houston had six sacks and 10 tackles for loss. He will turn 27 in June and has not missed a game in his four NFL seasons. He is the biggest of the targets at 300 pounds.

He led defensive ends with 54 “stops,” a tackle that constitutes an offensive failure, on PFF. Willie Young: The Bears could pluck Young from the Lions. The 6-4, 251-pound end turns 29 in September and started 15 games after zero starts from 2010-12. He had three sacks and was solid against the run, plus his 48 QB hurries were third among 4-3 DEs. The Lions have a new staff and depth at defensive end with Ziggy Ansah and Jason Jones.

Church gives homeless a second chance

JOLIET – Cliff Diamond, pastor of Second Chance Community Church in Joliet, mentions one of his congregants as simply as “Tim,” an outof-state man working for a carnival who lost his job at a Joliet event and didn’t have money to return home.

Diamond, also the network administrator at Joliet’s Stepan Company, reached out to Tim when he founded his church in 2005. Tim joined a year later, now lives in the church’s Samaritan House (a converted parsonage for men having nowhere else to go) and cleans and generally helps out at the church.

Diamond recently told Tim he’d give him the money to go home to his family, if Tim wished, but Tim refused. Diamond’s wife, Darlene Diamond of Joliet, understands exactly why.

“We are his home,” she said. “We are his family.”

Men like Tim are why Diamond began Second Chance Community Church. He wanted to do more for homeless and disenfranchised members from other churches than serve monthly meals at soup kitchens and wave a legalistic church doctrine flag before their eyes. Diamond wanted to welcome them “just like they have been members for a long time.”

“We want to reach people churches have kind of forgotten,” Diamond said.

They’d rather find a job and live in society. So armed with six like-minded individuals, Diamond took the gospel to the homeless.

“Every summer, for June, July and August, we rent the amphitheater in front of the Rialto,” Diamond said. “We serve brunch right there and have a barbecue one week.

Normally we have 20 to 25 homeless people. That’s how we talk to them.”

That’s still not enough to coax homeless people into the actually church building – lack of shower facilities, clean clothes and transportation for these people are real deterrents – so Diamond goes one step more.

He occasionally hosts “dinner and movie nights” with themed dinners served restaurant style, where he picks up 50 people from Daybreak Center in Joliet and brings them to Second Chance Community Church for a night out.

“At most homeless shelters, you walk up and they plop food on your plate, Army-style,” Diamond said.

“We take their order and serve them.”

Darlene and other church members plan themed four course dinners (such as Mexican and Italian, complete with soup, salad, main courses and desserts) and then prepare the food.

Working behind the scenes is where Darlene feels most comfortable.

She plans events – such as the church’s periodic coat drives – works with the children’s church and sings with the worship team. Darlene was initially not as enthused about starting a church as Diamond was, although she now supports the idea 100 percent.

“I felt pastors’ wives had to be perfect and play the piano,” Darlene said with a smile.

During colder months, Second Chance Community Church initially gathered for Sunday morning worship services at a local motel. Later, it met at a downtown sandwich shop.

Eventually, it rented an empty church building near MorningStar Mission in Joliet.

Its parsonage, however, was converted to Samaritan House, a four-bedroom, two-bath home where homeless men can stay indefinitely for a small contribution, $50 a week when Samaritan House is full, more if fewer men reside there.

Diamond’s goals for the future are simple: begin a similar home for women – or perhaps women and children – and continue broadening his reach. Currently, about 50 people attend Diamond’s church on Sunday mornings.

Those goals are two reasons why he will personally transport anyone needing a ride and why Diamond allows animals to attend Sunday services.

Do you like overtricks?

The answer depends upon circumstances. If you are playing in a pair event or a board-a-match teams, you usually try to gather as many overtricks as possible. But in other forms of the game, you should concentrate on making your contract. True, if you can go after an overtrick without any risk, do so. However, trying for 20 or 30 more points and losing a 300-point or 500-point game bonus does not make sense.

In this deal, how should South play safely in three no-trump after West leads his fourth-highest spade?

South starts with eight top tricks: three spades, three diamonds and two clubs. The extra trick is bound to come from clubs.

And if that finesse is working, there will be at least one overtrick in South’s future.

A careless declarer would look no further. He would take the first trick on the board with the spade queen and run the club jack (or play a club to his ace, return to the board in spades or diamonds, then take the finesse). Here, though, that ought to cost the contract. West should shift to the heart queen, and the defenders can take one club and four hearts.

With East on lead, dummy’s heart king is safe from attack. So, South should cash his two top clubs. Here the queen drops and South gets that overtrick. But if East started with queen-third or -fourth, the contract would be safe.

With so many choices, find milk that’s right for you Dear Doctor K: I hear that dairy milk, which I’ve been drinking all my life, may not be healthy. Should I switch from dairy milk to a different kind?

Dear Reader: When I was a kid, every mother (surely including mine) believed that dairy milk was healthy.

Television commercials called dairy milk “nature’s most perfect food” and intoned “you never outgrow your need for milk.” I think I remember hearing that every time I watched Davy Crockett on television. (Yes, I know that dates me.)

In the decades since then, we’ve learned that saturated fats in the diet raise blood cholesterol levels – and that, in turn, increases the risk of heart disease and strokes. Dairy milk has a little more than 3 percent butterfat, much of it saturated fat.

That’s why over the past 30 years, grocery stores have started to carry reduced-butterfat dairy milk – 2 percent fat, 1 percent fat and skim milk (very little fat). I put 1 percent dairy milk on my morning cereal. To my taste, 1 percent is plenty creamy, but skim milk just isn’t creamy enough. In fact, after years of using 1 percent milk, when I’m traveling and the only option in a restaurant is 2 percent or whole (3

These days there is a variety of non-dairy, fortified milk beverages on the shelves of most grocery stores – and plenty of my friends and patients swear by them. Here’s a guide to help you choose the milk that’s best for you.

• Dairy milk is a good source of calcium and vitamin D, which promote bone health. Many dairy milk products are also fortified with other vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin A and phosphorus. (Nondairy milks that are fortified can also be good sources of these vitamins and minerals.) The more butterfat, the higher the calories, total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol.

• Soy milk is almost identical to dairy milk in its nutritional content.

Most brands have moderate amounts of fat, which make them similar in calories to lowfat (1 percent) dairy milk.

Soy milk is also fortified with vitamin D, vitamin A and calcium. Soy milks are much higher in protein than other

non-dairy milks. This is an important difference for vegetarians and vegans who are trying to meet their protein needs.

• Nut milks come in varieties such as almond, walnut or hazelnut. They are lactose-, soy- and gluten-free. The unsweetened versions are also lower in calories than other milks. However, they provide much less protein than dairy and soy milks.

• Coconut milk. One cup of a coconut-milk beverage has the same number of calories as a cup of skim milk. But coconut milk is much higher in fat, especially saturated fat.

• Grain and seed milks. Rice, oat and quinoa milks are examples of grain and seed milks. They have higher total carbohydrate and sugar contents. The rarer seed milks, such as hemp, sunflower and sesame seed, have the highest fat content of all the alternatives.

By MANUEL ROIG-FRANZIA The Washington Post NEW YORK – The writer, tall and owlish, a sly grin on his face, ambles in soft-soled shoes down the hall of his roomy Upper East Side apartment.

His office is a tad disorderly, he says by way of apology, but also, it might seem, as a means of foreshadowing.

It’s tempting to imagine E.L. Doctorow, our master channeler of bygone Americas, hunched over a manual typewriter here.

But Doctorow, who turned 83 this month, rejects the label of “historical novelist” so often ascribed to him, saying the word used to describe his avocation needs no modification. When he sits in this narrow space filled with books and piles of periodicals he’s meaning to read, his fingers meander across the keyboard of a laptop computer, rather than a Smith-Corona.

He props his IBM ThinkPad in an awkward posture, wobbling atop a thick book about Herodotus, the ancient Greek historian.

“The important thing is to not to be too comfortable when you’re writing,” Doctorow explains. “Noise in the street?

That’s good. The computer goes down? That’s good. All these things are good. It has to be a little bit of a struggle.”

Doctorow challenges readers of his new novel, “Andrew’s Brain,” an enigmatic wonder that went on sale Tuesday, to struggle a bit, too. “I do think this book, more than most, is one that judges its readers,” Doctorow says. “If someone is looking for ordinary formulaic fiction, this is not it.”

Doctorow has been amused as advance readers try to unravel the meanings of his latest work. The novel, which somersaults through time and perspective, is mainly built upon an extended conversation between a misfortune-plagued cognitive scientist named Andrew and a frequently befuddled questioner he sometimes calls “Doc.” One reader guessed that Doc is a ventriloquist and Andrew a dummy, Doctorow says, his right eye arching as he sits at the head of the table in a dining room with antiquey pastoral-scene wallpaper.

He stops and laughs.

“Someone else said that Andrew is a computer,” he recounts. An editor friend read

it, then immediately started re-reading it to try to understand it. In a conversation with another friend, Doctorow suggested that the book might be thought of “as an installation.”

“And we were both puzzled by what I just said. Why did I say that?” Eventually he settled on the idea of the book existing “in the nature of an installation that you walk into – you get hit by everything at once.”

He likes playing with iterations and reiterations. Andrew first spots his future wife while she is doing a handstand at the small college where he’s teaching. In the book’s climactic scene – spoiler alert – Andrew suddenly does a handstand in the Oval Office, alarming the Secret Service.

“All of these things sort of light up each other,” he says.

When Doctorow began writing, he decided to use his initials – his full name is Edgar Lawrence Doctorow – because writers he admired had done so, men such as D.H. Lawrence,

T.S. Eliot and E.M. Forster. But friends call him Edgar.

Doctorow seldom reads his previous work, though they fill shelves in libraries and bookstores around the world. “There’s an alienation that occurs with your present writing-self and your past writing-self. I could not duplicate right now my first novel ... . Not that I’d want to.”

His books became bestsellers and accumulated piles of awards – a National Book Critics Circle prize for “Ragtime,” a National Book Award for “World’s Fair,” a PEN/ Faulkner for “Billy Bathgate.”

But by the late 1990s, Doctorow was gripped by a “desire to sort of break through and break the mold,” a feeling that took firmer hold while he was writing his 2000 novel, “City of God.” The ideas for his books invariably stem from images that he can’t erase from his mind.

The sight of a group of men in tuxedoes inspired “Billy Bathgate,” his novel about a teenage boy who becomes the protege of the gangster Dutch Schultz.

“Andrew’s Brain” was triggered by dual memories: an image of a little girl coloring and an emotional conversation Doctorow had with a friend who confided that he had inadvertently killed his child. Over drinks one night, the man told Doctorow about the child dying in his arms after he administered an incorrect medicine with an eye dropper. The travails of his friend – a decent man connected to a string of tragedies – informed Doctorow’s portrait of his character, Andrew.

“It is dangerous to stare into yourself,” Andrew says. “You pass through endless mirrors of self-estrangement. This too is the brain’s cunning, that you are not to know yourself.”

Leaked controversy exposes divisions on Evergreen Terrace Joliet does not know if state’s attorney will investigate

By BOB OKON bokon@stmedianetwork.com JOLIET – Mayor Thomas Giarrante’s call for a probe into a City Council leak has exposed a divide on the City Council over plans for Evergreen Terrace redevelopment.

But the city is no closer a week later to knowing if it the alleged leak of a confidential city document to the other side will ever be investigated.

Giarrante said Wednesday that he has not spoken with anyone from the Will County State’s Attorney’s office since asking them early last week to investigate how a legal document presented to council members in closed session allegedly wound up in the hands of the other side in the Evergreen Terrace lawsuit.

“We’re reviewing the matter,” said Charles Pelkie, spokesman for the state’s attorney’s office.

Probably the biggest hang-up in any investigation is whether anything illegal happened.

The alleged leak of the document to the other side in a city legal fight may raise questions about politics and motives.

But releasing information from closed city council sessions is generally not illegal.

“That’s what we’re looking into,” Pelkie said, “whether anything illegal happened.”

knowledge that council members’ comments have showed not everyone’s on board with the plan to take over the subsidized housing complex and redevelop it.

The city has been in court since 2005 on a condemnation suit that so far has cost roughly $2 million in attorneys’ fees.

“Their comments are very easy to understand,” G i a r r a nt e s a i d , w h e n asked if the controversy over the alleged leak has left the impression that the board is divided on Evergreen Terrace.

“There is no doubt that there is some opposition.”

Councilman Robert O’Dekirk had been the lone critic of Evergreen Terrace plans until the mayor announced the possible probe at a council meeting on Jan. 7.

But O’Dekirk said council comments in the aftermath of the mayor’s announcement have shown that he is not the only one raising questions about the merits of a city takeover of the privately run housing complex.

“There are several of us on the council, not just one or two, who have started asking questions here,” O’Dekirk said.

“What’s the plan here?

What’s it going to cost?”

O’Dekirk has asked for a public presentation to detail how the city would manage the costs of acquiring Evergreen Terrace and managing it.

“That’s what we’re looking into, whether anything illegal happened.”

City Attorney Jeff Plyman has said such a presentation will be made in the near future, and has said that the takeover could be done with federal subsidies and without city money.
