Joliet police seek murder victim’s girlfriend

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police are trying to find the girlfriend of Michael C. Brock, homicide victim from last weekend shot and hit by a car.

The girlfriend, Chinescia S. Hill-King, 23, is the owner of the car that hit Brock, police said. She has not been seen since before her 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo was found abandoned Saturday morning.

“We have been unable to make contact with Hill-King.

We’ve spoken with several

of her family members, but no one has been able to locate her,” Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said Chinescia S. Wednesday.

Hill-King Hill-King’s car was found in the 600 block of Kiep Avenue about an hour before Brock’s body was discovered in an alley behind the 500 block of South Ottawa Street – a half mile away.

Roechner said the damage on the yellow Monte Carlo matched debris found near

Brock’s body.

Police initially believed Brock, 24, was the victim of a hit-and-run, until a deputy Will County Coroner discovered a gunshot wound. Authorities said the evidence has not yet shown whether Brock was struck by the car before or after he was shot.

At the time of his death, Brock was on probation after pleading guilty to drug possession charges in 2013.

Rialto fundraiser effort picks up steam – and about $4,000

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An online crowd-funding effort to restore the Rialto Square Theatre marquee received a roughly 570 percent boost in 24 hours this week.

Sara Wittchen, a Joliet real estate agent who created the GoFundMe for the Rialto, said Wednesday the fundraising effort accumulated nearly $4,000 in 24 hours. Before then, the total sat at $600, she said.

That’s roughly 1 percent of the $350,000 that the Rialto lost when donor Ed Czerkies pulled a contribution amid opposition to a marquee design from some of the same people who started the GoFundMe campaign.

Wittchen said it’s a start.

“I think people are starting to realize they really can help, and they want to help,” Wittchen said.

As of early Wednesday evening, the group had raised $4,570. The GoFundMe fundraiser was created Dec. 17.

When the news broke Jan. 8 that Czerkies was asking for his $350,000 donation back, Wittchen said a lot of people

Tricia Simpson Rialto Foundation president realized they needed to donate to the Rialto and have “really taken it into their hands.”

The fundraiser’s goal is to raise $100,000 for the theater marquee, but there is no deadline, Wittchen said.

Joliet resident Mary Beth Gannon said donors’ intentions are genuine, and they are putting their money where their mouth is.

“I would like the word to get out, because if we can do that in one day, imagine what we could do in a year,” she said.

Wittchen said she has sought support from local businesses, such as Merichka’s, Al’s Steak House and Bill Jacobs Chevrolet. She said Salon David Anthony has run vouchers at its store to support the fundraiser.

Rialto Foundation President Tricia Simpson said the foundation encourages any donations for the Rialto, including the GoFundMe effort.

“We welcome it with full force and enthusiasm,” Simpson said. “I think it would be everybody’s greatest dream or accomplishment when the Rialto runs in the black year after year.”

Simpson said she has reached out to Gannon, and hopes supporters of the GoFundMe account will reach out to the foundation to coordinate efforts.

As for the marquee itself, Rialto Board Chairman James Smith said the project is on hold until the board makes a decision on what to do next.

“I can’t say the project is dead,” Smith said. “We’ll continue to pursue donors and find funding for it.”

Smith said the board would discuss using the GoFundMe money if formally approached.

He said he was grateful people were organizing money on behalf of the Rialto.

“I’m appreciative of thoughts out there like that.

We would have to consider it as a board. I can’t make that call as one person,” he said.

QUICK NEWS District 113A considers makeup day options

LEMONT – With students missing three-consecutive days due to cold weather last week, District 113A will be asking parents for their feedback on when they would like the days to be made up.

The district has five emergency days in the school calendar in case of cancellations.

Rather than rescheduling all the school days for the end of the school year, Superintendent Courtney Orzel said the district is considering holding a makeup day on Presidents Day, Feb. 16, or the Friday before spring break, April 3.

The district would not need to apply for a waiver to hold class on Presidents Day because it is not an official school holiday, Orzel said.

The district is required to inform the Illinois State Board of Education of its intended makeup days and pass an amendment to the school year calendar through the district board of education.

New filing fee expected to be implemented Friday

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – If you have any legal filings to make, you can save a little money getting it done right away.

The Will County Board is expected Thursday to approve a $25 fee on court filings that will be put into a fund for construction of a new courthouse.

Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt told judges and lawyers attending a “State Of The Courthouse” luncheon the fee will be implemented Friday.

“With 80,000 cases annually, that’s $2 million a year.

Although the estimate is the fund will only cover 15 percent of the amount needed, it’s still a significant amount,” Schoenstedt said at the luncheon Wednesday.

The chief judge said preliminary engineering studies show Will County is going to best be served by a 400,000-square-foot facility that houses 42 courtrooms.

Will County has 36 judges – nearly double what the population warranted 20 years ago.

“To indicate the growth here ... that’s still two judges short from the 2010 census [recommendations],” Schoenstedt said.

Since a new courthouse won’t be built for several years at the earliest, making the current one more secure will be a project for 2015.

Schoenstedt said a key card system will be installed to restrict access to the back hallways. Doors will be built on each side of the law library, which is in the same corridor as several judges’ chambers.

Access to justice

The judge said attention also will be paid to improving access to justice for a changing population.

State law requires court personnel to make “reasonable effort” to give information to indigent clients and those who don’t speak or read English.

“The goal is to shepherd these people through the process,” Schoenstedt said. Students in the court’s summer intern and extern programs and pre-law students from local colleges will be trained to assist those who don’t understand English in finding forms, courtrooms and legal references.

Will County currently has three Spanish language interpreters. If certified interpreters are unavailable, the judge can utilize any county employee who can translate, then a friend or family member of the subject of the case.

As a last resort, a judge can seek volunteers in the courtroom.

“Obviously the further down the list a judge has to go, the less of substance will get done that day. It would likely just be an interpretation to pick a date when someone is available,” Schoenstedt explained.

Changing of the guard

Schoenstedt also said the retirements of three of the courthouse’s nine department heads in the next two months will “hurt to lose experience and leadership.”

KarenDoyle,a28-year-county employee, has run the law library for 12 years. She has spent much of that time helping attorneys and the public find legal research electronically while disposing of hundreds of outdated books that took up space.

Chief Bailiff Jack Susner started at the courthouse in 2001 after 22 years with the Illinois Department of Corrections’ education program.

“We’re not the police,” Susner said. “We’re the first public relations people someone will deal with at the courthouse, so I [hired] those who had experience working with

Susner recalled a murder trial where a watching “gangbanger” was slouching down in his chair.

“When I approached him and he straightened up, I thanked him. I think treating him with respect surprised him and I had no problem with him and he made sure his friends did the same,” Susner said.

since 1986, said his job has changed substantially.

“The clientele hasn’t changed, but the employees are far more sophisticated,” he said.

“When I was hired in 1977, I was given a file and sent to Stateville to talk to someone on my own the third day.”

“Now you’re assigned to a team with veteran probation officers who are there to teach and help you. It’s made what we do much more effective.”

Railroad crossing to be shut down Barriers blocking off Walter Strawn Drive will be up Jan. 28

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – A controversial railroad crossing in Elwood will shut down in two weeks, the Illinois Commerce Commission ruled Wednesday.

Barriers will be erected, blocking off Walter Strawn Drive, on Jan. 28 as part of the ICC board’s decision.

The decision came despite opposition from CenterPoint Properties, the developer of two intermodal industrial parks near the crossing. Its attorney argued the move severely limits access and jeopardizes safety along other highways and local roads by diverting thousands of trucks elsewhere in the region.

The railroad crossing has been a point of contention for the past year, pitting Elwood village officials against CenterPoint in a series of hearings on how to best address safety concerns there.

Crossing gates were broken almost 50 times in 2013,

and Elwood officials have tried for some time to steer semitrailer traffic away from the area.

Closure supporters believe the situation is unique, with a high volume of funeral processions using Route 53 to reach the nearby Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

Semitrailer drivers often use Walter Strawn Drive to enter and exit the intermodals.

Increased truck traffic in the last decade prompted village officials to reopen a 2001 ICC case to address public safety concerns.

‘Victory for public safety’

Officials from Union Pacific, the Illinois Department of Transportation, Elwood and the ICC staff have all urged the ICC board to shut down the crossing, but CenterPoint remained opposed.

Trucks will now have to use the Arsenal Road interchange on I-55.

After the meeting, Elwood Police Chief Fred Hayes called the decision a “victory for public safety.”

“What we’ve been reporting for the entire time is that public safety has to take priority No. 1,” Hayes said.

“Certainly, this ruling shows that the state of Illinois is definitely concerned for the safety of the residents of El-

wood, the safety of the commuters in the area and the safety of the truckers that drive through the area.”

But Michael Scotti, attorney for CenterPoint, argued there needs to be an impact study.

“What we don’t want to happen is, by shutting this crossing, you create a bigger safety issue at other locations,” Scotti said.

In the coming weeks, IDOT will add signage alerting drivers of the closure.

The state agency also will complete an engineering and environmental study for a

grade separation. The ICC ruling also requires IDOT to schedule quarterly meetings to develop long-term solutions.

Questions remain

Still, questions have arisen recently regarding IDOT’s opinion on the closure. While the state agency all along has favored the closure, a letter was filed in the case just before the holidays by an IDOT attorney offering a different opinion.

The letter from an IDOT engineer called for an impact study prior to the closure and the consideration of alternatives.

Scotti said the letter shows there’s serious concern for the safety of other local roads with the diversion of traffic.

He wants another ICC hearing on the IDOT letter.

Trial date set for Landerman in Hickory Street murders

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A trial date has been set for the remaining suspect in the 2013 Hickory Street slayings.

Adam M. Landerman, 21, sported a crew cut and wore a dark blue jail jumpsuit Wednesday when he appeared before Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak. Prosecutors and defense attorneys told the judge they had agreed to

a June 8 trial date.

“You’ve spoken with your attorney and agreed to [waive] Adam M. your demand Landerman for a speedy trial,” Bertani-Tomczak asked Landerman for the record.

“Yes, I do,” he replied.

Landerman is charged with murder for allegedly killing

Eric Glover Jr. and Terrance Rankins, both 22, on Jan. 9, 2013.

The victims were lured to Alisa Massaro’s house in the 1100 block of North Hickory Street, expecting to party with Massaro and Bethany McKee, investigators have said. But instead, Joshua Miner and Landerman were waiting with the young women after the four allegedly made plans to attack and rob them.

Miner strangled Rankins

while Landerman allegedly strangled Glover; the robbers got about $100, desecrated the bodies and made plans to dismember them before police were called to the house, according to testimony at various trials.

Massaro pleaded guilty in May to robbery and concealing a homicide in exchange for testifying against the others and a 10-year prison sentence.

McKee and Miner were

both found guilty during separate bench trials before Judge Gerald Kinney and sentenced to life in prison. When Kinney retired last month, Landerman’s case was assigned to Bertani-Tomczak.

Defense attorneys did not indicate to Bertani-Tomczak whether Landerman would waive his right to a jury trial. Arguments and evidence lasted about a week-and-a-half in both McKee’s and Miner’s cases.

6 Special prosecutor disputes Rialto board lawsuit

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A special prosecutor for the Illinois Attorney General disputes allegations from the Rialto Square Theatre of unpaid rent.

David Neal is being sued by the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, according to a lawsuit filed in December 2013. The Rialto’s governing board alleges Neal owes the theater $6,000 from when he rented office space in the building. The case is scheduled to go to trial March 5.

Neal said he’s made payments, amounting to an estimated $10,000 thus far. The Rialto board in its 2013 lawsuit says he still owes $6,000, but Neal claims to owe less.

Neal said he has been sued several times by the WCMEAA since he stopped renting Rialto office space for his law firm in 2007.

He said he offered to pay $10,000 for the next 10 years, but wants the money to go to a specific Rialto program and

not Rialto management.

“I want this behind me. I would prefer that the Rialto board accept my offer. …

But either way I am going to be glad to get this over with once and for all,” he said.

Rialto General Manager Randy Green declined to comment on the lawsuit and deferred to Dennis Porick, the attorney for WCMEAA. Porick did not return calls for comment made earlier this week.

Neal said he offered more than what the Rialto board alleges he owes because he “cares deeply about the Rialto,” and wants to see the theater flourish. He said he made an offer in December to enter a 10-year contract to participate in the Rialto Super S.T.A.R. Program for $10,000 if the board dismissed the lawsuit, according to a letter addressed to Porick.

The S.T.A.R. donor program offers participants special services, opportunities and amenities, according to the Rialto’s website.

James Smith said he only remembers an offer made by Neal in the fall or early winter, but he doesn’t recall the details.

He and Green said the offer was rejected by the board because they wanted the money to come to the WCMEAA and not through the Rialto foundation as a donation.

Smith said he has no “hard feelings” against Neal, but he took an oath to protect the financial and physical integrity of the Rialto. The case is strictly about the promissory note where Neal owes $6,000, he said.

“It’s not about the eviction or the lawsuit anymore.

It’s about one item: the promissory note he agreed to,” Smith said.

According to a 2013 WCMEAA memo, the board rejected a payment plan amounting to $7,600 that Neal wanted to pay in installments and wanted to split between the WCMEAA and Rialto Square Theatre Foundation S.T.A.R. program.

The board directed Green to pursue court action against Neal for $6,000.

The dispute between Neal and the Rialto began in 2007 when the theater owners sued him for about $13,304 in unpaid rent and $350 in attorney fees pursuant to a lease, according to court records.

Neal filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit and counter-sued in November 2007, alleging he entered an agreement with the Rialto board and management that he would rent space if it became subdivided with new walls and entrances.

In 2010, the court dismissed the claims of the two parties and they came to a settlement where Neal would pay $12,000 in $600 bi-monthly payments.

In 2011, the Rialto sued Neal once more for $7,800 he promised to pay from the settlement. Neal filed a dismissal of the lawsuit, alleging the WCMEAA had no legal authority to file the lawsuit.

The court granted his dismissal in 2013.

Plainfield public works sets goals for 2015; 2016 budget

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Among the changes for the village’s public works department this year are contracting out more work and continuing Emerald Ash Borer-infested tree removal.

Public Works Director Allen Persons on Monday presented Plainfield trustees with an update on the fiscal 2015 street division budget, and a preliminary outlook to the fiscal 2016 budget.

“I think it’s important to bring out some things related to the services that we provide and we provide in-house, things that are contracted that could be potentially expanded in the future, and new technology that has saved the village money,” Persons said.

The fiscal 2014 streets budget, which ran from July 2013 through June 2014, rose almost 25 percent to $3.51 million because of the harsh win-

ter storms last winter.

The fiscal 2015 streets budget, which will end in June of this year, was adopted at $3.36 million. Persons said the department is currently trending just under budget.

However, the fiscal 2016 streets budget, which will start in July, is expected to rise 1.8 percent to $3.42 million in large part due to an expected increase in contractual services.

Contracting out

Persons said part-time seasonal employees or an increase in contracted work could enhance services while cost savings continue through efficiencies in vehicle, fuel, street light, streets and landscaping maintenance has helped.

In some cases, it would be better to contract out more street work, especially along Route 59, where it’s sometimes difficult for employees

to continue maintenance of the medians and streetscape.

Persons also said the department has budgeted for two summer interns to walk 200 miles of sidewalk to help the village complete future pathway inspections.

Emerald Ash Borer

The department will continue its plan to remove ash trees that are infected with the Emerald Ash Borer from the village’s right of way.

“It’s going to continue to be a challenge,” Persons said, noting that the village is just about halfway in its plan.

Last year, the village removed 650 trees, while contractors removed 250 larger trees.

Persons said finding replacement trees through a consortium also has been a challenge, and he expected it to continue as other municipalities also compete for trees at nurseries.

Man who police say robbed Rockdale gas station in custody

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com ROCKDALE – Police say a man was looking for money for heroin when he held up a gas station last week.

Chief Robert Dykstra said Matthew Riffel, 27, on Tuesday admitted to officers he decided to rob the Mobil at 1802 Moen Ave. in Rockdale on Jan. 7. “ H e j u s t Matthew w a n t e d t o Riffel score, took a gun from his father’s bedroom and walked to a nearby gas station so he could get the money,” Dykstra said.

Shortly before 4 a.m. Riffel allegedly came in to the gas station to use the bathroom, went outside to smoke a cigarette before another customer left and walked back inside to confront the clerk by the door.

“He pulled out a black

semi-automatic handgun and said ‘Let’s make this easy.

Put your [cell] phone down and take me to the register,’ ” Dykstra said.

After taking the cash, the robber ran across Larkin Avenue. Dykstra said footage from surveillance cameras made police suspect the bandit had come from a nearby house without a vehicle.

On Sunday, Riffel’s brother allegedly discovered him preparing to shoot up and a struggle ensued, according to Dykstra. When Riffel tried to get a handgun from his jacket, the police were called.

“The gun, the proximity of the house to the gas station and other evidence led officers to connect him with the robbery,” Dykstra said.

Riffel was hospitalized until Tuesday and questioned at the police station after he was discharged.

Dykstra said Riffel was booked into the Will County jail about 9 p.m. on a charge of armed robbery.

Joliet man injured in car chase in good condition Police: 19-year-old crashed into a pole while fleeing

BY CHRISTI WARREN Shaw Media ROCKFORD – A 19-yearold Joliet man was upgraded to good condition at a Rockford-area hospital Monday after being seriously injured in a car chase with Rock Falls Police early Saturday morning.

Rock Falls Police Chief Mike Kuelper said no citations have been filed yet– a standard practice among police agencies while a suspect is hospitalized.

The Joliet Police Department contacted Rock Falls at about 12:50 a.m.

Saturday with information about Brett Hodorowicz, saying he was in the Rock Falls area and seemed to be having medical issues, police said.

Rock Falls police located Hodorowicz minutes later at a McDonald’s and started talking to him about how he was feeling, at which point he took off in his car, almost pinning an officer between his car and another in the process.

Officers found him about 30 minutes later in a building on Knief Road, and had him taken to CGH Medical

“The number one vaccination is the pneumonia shot,” Kantar emphasized.

“You need a seasonal flu shot and the shingles shot is very important. It’s a very benign disease but one of the most painful. Make sure your tetanus shot is updated and have your eyes checked for problems like glaucoma.”

Mammograms and bone density tests are recommended every two years for women with no risk factors, or annually for higher risk patients. Medicare also pays for a colonoscopy every 10 years or more frequently, depending on results.

Blood work checks for anemia, kidney or liver problems and diabetes.

Medicare also covers neurologic and muscular screening for falls.

“Some consider falling a natural part of getting older,” Kantar said. “That’s wrong. It’s not a normal thing.”

While the word, “geriatric” makes some hesitant to take that first Medicare visit, “it’s very important for the patient to know the benefits,” Kantar said.

Local officials believe promised state money will come through JOLIET – Local government officials appear to be taking in stride Gov. Bruce Rauner’s executive order putting a hold on state contracts and grants.

The Joliet Park District was among recent recipients of state grants for park improvements when former Gov. Pat Quinn announced $750,000 for a land acquisition project.

The money will be used for an 80-acre acquisition in the middle of Pilcher Park.

Park District Executive Director Dominic Egizio said he is confident the money will eventually come through.

“I’m sure he [Rauner] is going to tie up everything for a little while,” Egizio said, adding that it would be difficult to even check immediately on the status of the grant, which comes through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. “I’m not even sure whose in charge of IDNR right now. I’m sure in another month or so it will all come out in the wash.”

The executive order was characterized by the Rauner administration as a sign that the new governor is making the troubled condition of state finances a priority.

One project that draws a lot of local attention already has

been put on hold.

A Rauner spokesman Tuesday said a section of the order putting all highway construction projects under review does mean the Illiana Expressway, a plan highly favored by Quinn, is on hold.

At Joliet Junior College, officials Tuesday began making calls to the state to see if $10 million dollars promised by Quinn in October still would be coming for interior work on the new downtown campus building.

JJC spokeswoman Kelly Rohder said Wednesday that JJC officials are confident after reading the executive order that the money is secure because it was awarded before Nov. 1, although they have not heard back from state officials.

“This is to be expected,” said state Sen. Patrick McGuire, D-Joliet. “We have a new governor.”

McGuire said he has not heard an outcry of concern from local government officials or leaders of agencies dependent on state monies regarding the executive order.

At the city of Joliet, City Manager Jim Hock said he did not know if any pending grant money would be delayed. He may hear from department heads in coming weeks as they review their budgets.

But Hock said he is confident that the biggest project using state money – the new multimodal transportation center being built downtown – will not be delayed by the order.

“Something like the multimodal has been committed to expenditure for years,” Hock said. “And, we’re in the middle of a project, so there should be no problem at all.”

Attempts to the governor’s office for comment were unsuccessful.

LEMONT – The village of Lemont Electoral Board held two hearings this week on an objection to the candidate filing papers submitted by village trustee candidates Rick Ligthart and Kevin Cliff.

Village Trustee Ron Stapleton, running for re-election, filed the objection, citing several clerical errors on the forms the candidates filed.

Stapleton and the two candidates gave their oral arguments during Monday’s hearing, and the board is scheduled to reconvene Jan. 22 to announce its decision.

If the commission does not vote in favor of the candidates, Ligthart and Cliff will be removed from the April ballot.

The three-person commission is made up of Mayor Brian Reaves, Trustee Jeanette Virgilio and Village Clerk Charlene Smollen.

Some of the clerical errors on forms included writing the wrong year when giving the date they signed the forms and not filling out all their personal information on each sheet of signatures they submitted.

Ligthart also admitted he accidentally submitted a sheet of Cliff’s petition signatures as his own.

The clerical errors on the petition forms may make the petition signatures on those forms invalid, so the candidates’ case for staying on the ballot may come down to whether they still have the minimum number of signa-

“I would ask the board to consider the intent of what I was doing,” Ligthart said.

GENE R. ELLIS Gene R. Ellis, age 79, of 2401 Cedar Creek Ct., Quincy, and formerly of the Frankfort/Joliet area for most of his life, passed away at his home surrounded by his family including his dog, Muffin.

Gene was born on August 16, 1935, in Fort Dodge, IA, a son of John Wyman and Hazel Burgess Ellis. On June 24, 1961 he married Vivienne Eisenbrandt in St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Frankfort, IL. She survives.

Gene was a 1954 graduate of Joliet Township High School. He served in the United States Army from 1958-1960, and he was extremely proud of his service.

Gene had worked as a typesetter for 40 years. He was a “Typesetter Extraordinaire”. He also spent 10 years driving trucks for Smith Brothers Garden Center in New Lenox, IL. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: three children: John Ellis of Quincy; Marc (Stacie) Ellis of Dwight, IL; and Gena (Andy) Kittel of Titisee-Neustadt, Germany; eight grandchildren: Kristen, Megan, Pierson, and Timothy Ellis; Thomas Rensch; Lindie (Sam) Alsdorf; and Elena and Tobias Kittel; two brothers: Harold (Karen) Ellis of Portage, IN; and Paul (Lisa) Ellis of Joliet, IL; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Imprisoned member of MOVE group dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS PHILADELPHIA – A high-ranking member of the Philadelphia radical group MOVE serving a decades-long sentence for the 1978 killing of a police officer has died in prison, corrections officials said Wednesday.

William Phillips, known as Phil Africa, was 63. Phillips died of natural causes Saturday at the state prison in Dallas, near Wilkes-Barre, according to the state Corrections Department and the county coroner’s office.

Phillips had been in the prison infirmary and was hospitalized for five days last week, prison spokeswoman Robin Lucas said.

said Wednesday that Phillips had been well up until his hospitalization and was seen by inmates walking, stretching and doing jumping jacks.

She said that the organization considered his rapid decline and death suspicious.

Phillips was serving a 30to 100-year sentence in the fatal shooting of officer James Ramp as police tried to evict the radical back-to-nature group from its west Philadelphia headquarters after two years of confrontations with city officials.

Phillips and eight other MOVE members – all of whom adopted the last name Africa – were convicted of third-degree murder. He lost several parole bids and was scheduled for another hearing in June.

Winfield, long-serving Marlboro Man, dies in Wyoming at 85 The ASSOCIATED PRESS RIVERTON, Wyo. – One of the last of the Marlboro Men has died in Wyoming.

Darrell Hugh Winfield was 85. He died Monday at his home in Riverton, Davis Funeral Home said.

The Marlboro Man was a macho cowboy whose image in advertising from the 1950s to the late 1990s made filtered cigarettes more appealing to men. Previously, Marlboros were marketed to

women.

Winfield’s rugged good looks made him the face of Marlboro cigarettes in magazine and TV ads from the late 1960s to the late 1980s.

The Leo Burnett ad agency discovered Winfield in 1968 while he was working on the Quarter Circle 5 Ranch in western Wyoming.

Winfield was born July 30, 1929, in Little Kansas, Oklahoma. He is survived by his wife, son, five daughters and several grandchildren.

In 2004 when presented BEMA’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Jim said in his acceptance speech “In this day of electronic global communications, or maybe because of it, I still feel that there is no substitute for the power of the honest look in the eye and the sincere, firm handshake.”

He was a Founding Member of the Joliet Country Club for 64 years and of the Chicago Lake Shore Club and Chicago International Club.

Democratic leaders urge bipartisanship, set priorities

By KERRY LESTER and SARA BURNETT The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – As the new legislative session opened Wednesday under a Republican governor, Democratic leaders urged bipartisanship while at the same time sending a clear signal that they’re going to advance their own priorities, including raising the minimum wage and increasing funding for schools and social services.

House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton also indicated they’ll let Gov. Bruce Rauner take the lead – at least initially – on the state’s single biggest headache in the year ahead: the expiration of a temporary income tax increase and the resulting multibillion-dollar revenue loss for current and future budgets.

Madigan suggested the state’s first divided government in more than a decade means a more active role for Republican lawmakers.

“I wish to welcome you back – back to the active participation of state government,” he said during a House swearing-in ceremony at the University of Illinois-Springfield. He noted that previous years’ budgets have been passed with only Democratic votes, saying “there will be many difficult roll calls up ahead.”

Rauner has not yet provided specifics on how he plans to fix Illinois’ budget mess, though he said he’ll be ready to give his budget address on Feb. 18. Democrats said they’re waiting to hear what he has to say before presenting their own ideas – possibly putting Rauner in the position of being first to propose either raising taxes or slash spending.

Democrats control both chambers of the Legislature, with enough votes to override any Rauner veto.

Even before Wednesday’s opening of the 99th General Assembly, both sides said they were staking out their respective sides.

Last week, a special session led to a special election in 2016 for comptroller, halving the length of time for Rauner appointee Leslie Munger to fill the vacancy created when Judy Baar Topinka died last month.

And Rauner earlier this month expanded his campaign war chest by more than $20 million, which he could use to support the campaigns of loyal Republican lawmakers.

At a swearing-in ceremony in the Senate presided over by the new governor, Cullerton pledged to work with Rauner and legislators of both parties.

Cullerton said he wants to collaborate with Rauner to make opening a new business less cumbersome, noting some companies have to file paperwork with as many as a half-dozen state agencies before opening their doors.

“The people we represent want us to solve problems, improve the quality of life and open doors of economic and educational opportunity for their families,” he said. “I trust everyone is up to the challenge.”

While bipartisan and cooperation were the day’s buzzwords, Madigan and Cullerton made it clear that core Democratic platform items will play a major role in this session’s agenda.

Cullerton renewed a call for increasing the minimum wage, an idea a majority of voters supported in a nonbinding referendum last fall. Rauner has said he supports raising the wage from $8.25 to $10 per hour only if it’s accompanied by pro-business reforms.

“The same voters who sent us here want a higher minimum wage in Illinois,” Cullerton said. “It’s time to deliver.”

James Russell (Jim) Fay, age 90, an “Icon” in his parish; A leader in his industry, died as he had lived, gently and peacefully, in sure and certain hope of resurrection at Silver Cross Hospital, Joliet January 10, 2015.

The Joliet native, third of the three children of William E. Fay, Sr. and Helen Maloney Fay succeeded his father as President of Joliet-based Champion Machinery Company in 1962 serving in that capacity for 31 years. In 1993, he became senior Executive Consultant to CMC-America, creator of the Champion Baking Equipment and Systems, then under the third generation leadership of his son, Edward Charles (Ed) Fay. On his return from World War II service in the Navy’s Pacific Theater, Jim took on a role in the industry team that created sanitary standards that have guided practice for decades, working until his death to spearhead CMC’s drive to perfect engineering aimed at achieving today’s highest world-class sanitary standards for a newly globalized market. In 1983, the company was selected to be the first to bring Automated, White Pan Bread Production to Mainland China. Although an enthusiastic ambassador of global customer relationships, Jim remained a steadfast champion of the company’s “Made in America” commitment to quality and innovation. In 2011, at the age of 87, he was granted a US Patent for Bakery Equipment. In the current year of the 21st Century, Jim saw CMC America being recognized for its cutting edge cookie production and dough moving technology that allows bakeries and food preparation facilities large and small to achieve today’s trending artisanal quality without loss of efficiency or maximum productivity.

Jim’s educational history began at St. Raymond’s Grammar School where he graduated in the class of 1938. He attended Joliet Catholic High School until 1940 and finished his secondary education at Culver Academy, where he graduated as “Best All-round Cadet” in 1942. While studying Engineering at Northwestern University he was a member of the NROTC before serving as a Naval Officer in the Pacific Theater of Operations in World War II,

stationed in Pearl Harbor, HI. In 1948 he was awarded an MBA by Babson College. In 1949 he was awarded a Bakery Science Degree from the American Institute of Baking.

In 1952 he married Margaret (Peggy) Cunningham Fay at the Church of St. Raymond where he had previously received the Sacraments of Baptism, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation and where their five children were Baptized. He requested and received the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at the hands of Cathedral Rector Very Rev. Bradley Baker who will preside at his Mass of Christian Burial and Resurrection on Monday January 19, culminating a long and blessed relationship with the Church he considered “the parish church of the whole Diocese of Joliet.”

Along with his wife Peggy, Jim was serving, at the time of his death, as one of the Co-Chairs of the Cathedral’s Centennial Campaign. His deceased friend and brother-in-law William Cunningham, SJ did not hesitate to refer to Jim as “a Christ Figure” in the mold of the central character of Myles Connolly’s parable novella, Mr. Blue. It appears that Jim modeled his vocation to “Give Back” on Christ’s pattern of proclaiming the word, feeding the hungry of body and spirit and proclaiming the good news of Scripture.

He remained actively in involved to the end of 2014 in a 44-year Ministry as a Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus Minister of the Word. He served as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist for 31 Years and Visitation of the Sick of his parish and in the hospitals and nursing homes of the area. On the day of his death and at Masses during the weekend, his death was announced in pastoral messages that referred to him as “an icon” for the parish community where both Jim and his wife Peggy were, and where she remains, a tireless worker in lay ministries ranging from Proclamation of the Word at daily Masses to the Cathedral’s Bereavement outreach and religious education programs.

He admired and served with dedication in the Cathedral Of Saint Raymond St Vincent De Paul Society; and Meals on Wheels where he frequently visited to replace unconsumed meals with the next day’s ones, understanding that their warm and respectful conversation was the principal nourishment he was called upon to offer.

Our father, Bob Irwin, passed from this world on Friday, January 9, 2015, at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, and into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was born in Gruver, Iowa on February 15, 1918, to the late John Calvin (J.C.) and Gertrude (nee Green) Irwin.

On November 20, 1941, he married his sweetheart, Edith Bertino.

To Bob and Edith were born five beautiful children: Mary Lou (Bob) Gehrke of Pocatello, Idaho, Bobbi (Jim) Futterer of Loveland, CO, Margie (John) Mostyn of Lockport, Illinois, Skip (Sandi) Irwin of Essex, Illinois and Trudy (Bob) Wille of Steger, Illinois.

To his children and their spouses were born his grandchildren: Marie (Tony) Getsug of Clarksville, Maryland, Julie Gehrke of Nampa, Idaho; Karen (Chuck) Dickerson of Pocatello, Idaho; Mollie (Jon) Stromberg of Chicago, Illinois; Jay (Andrea) Mostyn of Springfield, Missouri; Mandy Irwin of Irving, Texas; Dawn Irwin of Broadhead, WI; Nicole Irwin of Plainfield, Illinois; Katrina Kryzaniak of Tampa, FL and Candice Kryzaniak of Essex, Illinois; and extended family, Dave (Windy) Douma and Dan (Desirae) Douma.

Bob always said that he wanted to be remembered for caring for his fellow man (and woman). Because of his caring nature, he was very active in and past President of the following organizations: the Civilian Welfare Club at Joliet Arsenal and NFFE Union, the Plainfield Athletic Club, the Old Timers Baseball Association, the Associated Clubs of Will County and the Rotary Club of Plainfield.

He was recipient of the Richard Ira Jones Memorial Award (1992), Rotary’s Cedric Pope Award (1999), Boy Scouts of America Silver Bea-

ver, Vigil Member Order of Arrow and the Old Timer’s Baseball Award (1979). Member of the Society of Quality Control, Non-Destructive Testing, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge, Mason (since 1943) and the Knights of Columbus.

Bob, along with his wife, taught Red Cross First Aid for 27 years.

They square danced for many years, once even appearing on the Pee Wee King television show! Bob played semi-pro baseball in the Joliet League 1939 with the Moran Athletic Club, Troy Merchants, Joliet Arsenal and the Will County Farm Bureau teams. He worked with BSA for 42 years, attending many award banquets. He helped start the Plainfield Athletic League (PAL) in 1952 and had a PAL baseball field named for him. He was an avid hunter, enjoyed horseshoe pitching, was a rock hound and became interested in Numismatist when he started sorting coins as therapy after eye surgery.

He was known as “the candy man”, giving Werther’s candies to friends and family he met at various events and places and to the staff at OLA. This always brought a smile to the faces of the recipients and a sweetness to their palates!! For the last several years, Bob resided at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home (OLA). Among the many things he enjoyed at OLA was planting geraniums and moss roses each spring in the front planter. Those who visited him often got to see the beautiful flowers and have Bob show them the variety of colors that emerged as he planted seeds from the previous year’s flowers. Another enjoyment of Bob’s was playing cards with different friends at OLA. Watching Lawrence Welk, virtual bowling, playing bingo, singing and dancing to old time songs, attending daily mass and praying the rosary with friends were activities that made his life enjoyable, that filled his spirit.

In addition to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, he is survived by one sister, Gen (Irwin) Spreitzer of Georgetown, TX; sisters-in-law and brothers-inlaw, Marianne (Jim) Crater of Crest Hill; Gerri Bertino, and Raymond (Dolores) Bertino, all of Joliet; Lawrence (Ruth) Bertino of Laguna Hills, CA. Bloomington woman sentenced to 3 years in pipe bomb case

URBANA – A Bloomington woman has been sentenced to three years in prison for her role in a plan to put a pipe bomb in her brother’s mailbox in Decatur.

The Bloomington Pantagraph reported that Linda Sue Curtis was sentenced Friday in federal court in Urbana to 37 months in prison.

Curtis pleaded guilty in October

to conspiring with Lloyd Lockwood of Bloomington. Lockwood is serving a 10-year sentence for putting the explosive device in the mailbox. A bomb squad was able to neutralize the explosive.

Court records show that Curtis wanted to get her brother in trouble because they were in an ongoing dispute over their mother’s estate.

Curtis previously worked for the Transportation Security Administration as an agent at the Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington.

Water main break affects Illinois State University campus

NORMAL – Several building on the Illinois State University campus were affected when a water main valve broke and flooded streets.

The Bloomington Pantagraph reported water was shut off to the Bone Student Center, Milner Library, Metcalf Laboratory School and the Bowling and Billiards Center.

Normal Water Director Steve Gerdes says the problem was reported at about 12 p.m. Tuesday and crews were working on repairs.

ISU’s campus dining services says restaurants at the student center will be closed through Wednesday.

Woman’s body found by man shoveling snow

NILES – The body of a woman has been found by a man shoveling snow along a suburban Chicago street.

The body of 55-year-old Elizabeth Lutz was found buried under snow covering a Niles parkway late Monday.

Police say the woman was found face down in the parkway.

An officer called to the scene administered CPR, but failed to get a response from the woman.

Police say the woman was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where she was pronounced dead.

Authorities say there were no visible signs of injury on the body. They added the woman was properly dressed for weather conditions.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office reports a Tuesday autopsy was inconclusive, pending the results of additional tests.

Jack was employed at Speicher and Gaylords in Plainfield for 45 years. After retiring, they moved to Lawrence Michigan.

Jack attended Decatur Bible Church.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents Gladys and Arthur.

ST. LOUIS – Two inmates serving decades-long prison sentences for separate killings and a man who wounded several Chicago police officers during a shootout were freed from Illinois lockups on Wednesday, two days after getting commutations from Pat Quinn in his final moments as governor.

Decried by a Chicago-area prosecutor as a “secretive maneuver” that slighted victims, Quinn’s actions Monday vacated the prison terms of Tyrone Hood, who was convicted in connection with a 1993 shooting death, and Anthony Dansberry, who had been found guilty of killing an elderly woman in 1991.

Also freed was Howard Morgan, a former Chicago police officer and railroad cop who had been sentenced to 40 years for an attempted murder

By ERICA WERNER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Shunning a White House veto threat and opposition within their own party, House Republicans approved legislation Wednesday to overturn President Barack Obama’s key immigration policies and expose hundreds of thousands of younger immigrants to expulsion from the U.S. The 236-191 vote came on a broad bill that would provide $39.7 billion to finance the Homeland Security Department through the rest of the budget year. Lawmakers of both parties said the legislation sorely was needed to pay for counterterrorism, cybersecurity and other priorities at a moment when the Paris terror attacks have underscored dire threats.

Democrats accused Republicans of putting that money at risk by attaching veto-bait amendments on immigration, and some Republicans voiced the same concern. But House GOP leaders and most

But Rep. Linda Sanchez, D-Calif., who chairs the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, said the Republicans simply were pandering to the far right.

“Shame on Republicans for attacking the Latino community,” Sanchez said. “Republicans are consciously targeting millions of families who work hard, contribute to our communities and are just trying to give their children a chance at the American dream.”

One of the immigration amendments, approved 237-

190, would undo executive actions that Obama announced in November to provide temporary deportation relief and work permits to some 4 million immigrants in the country illegally, mostly people who have children who are citizens or legal permanent residents. The amendment also would cancel earlier directives to immigration agents aimed at giving them discretion in focusing deportations on criminals.

A second amendment would delete Obama’s 2012 policy that has granted work permits and stays of deportation to more than 600,000 immigrants who arrived in the U.S. illegally as children under age 16. That measure passed narrowly, 218-209, as 26 of the more moderate Republicans – some representing large Hispanic populations – joined Democrats in opposition.

The underlying bill passed on a mostly party line vote, with 10 Republicans voting “no” and two Democrats voting “yes.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – Just before a 22-year-old Florida man blew himself up in Syria last May, he made one last trip home.

U.S. authorities weren’t tracking him. They didn’t learn that Moner Mohammad Abusalha had become radicalized until shortly before his suicide attack, said two U.S. officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Luckily for the residents of Vero Beach, Florida, Abusalha decided to detonate a truck bomb on a Syrian battlefield and not the seaside town where he grew up before becoming disillusioned with American life. But Abusalha is part of what officials call a disquieting and longstanding trend in Western extremism that seems also to include last week’s Paris attacks.

The most immediate terror risk to America and Europe, U.S. officials and outnewspaper being embraced as a symbol of freedom of speech.

Defending his caricature of the prophet on the latest cover, cartoonist Renald Luzier argued there should be no exceptions to freedom of expression.

In Turkey, a court in a southeastern city ordered a ban on access to websites showing the cover of Charlie Hebdo’s new edition after a lawyer filed a petition saying it would endanger public order, the state-run Anadolu News Agency reported.

The issue was banned in Senegal, in west Africa, and the spokesman for the Brussels prosecutor’s office, Laurens Dumont, said four shops in one neighborhood were threatened in one Brussels neighborhood if they sold it.

Egypt and Iran condemned the “provocative” publication. Egypt’s top Islamic authority, Dar al-Ifta, had warned against publishing the cover after its content became known Monday.

PARIS – Parisians lined up Wednesday to empty the newsstands of the first issue of Charlie Hebdo, a week after Islamic extremists attacked the satirical newspaper’s office, and French justice officials began cracking down by arresting dozens of people who glorified terrorism or made racist or anti-Semitic remarks.

The editors of the publication again put a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad on the cover, and it quickly sold out by early morning around the capital and elsewhere, with long lines and scuffles at kiosks. Disappointed buyers were told to come back Thursday when more of the increased print run of 5 million copies would be available.

A leader of Yemen’s al-Qaida branch officially claimed responsibility for the attacks by two gunmen that left 12 dead at the weekly publication, saying in a video posted online the slayings came in “vengeance for the prophet.”

The newspaper had received repeated threats for lampooning Muhammad.

A third attacker killed five other people, bringing the total number of dead in the Jan. 7-9 spasm of violence to 17 before all the gunmen died in police raids.

On alert for new attacks, France deployed thousands of police and soldiers around the country, and they moved to quash any racist remarks or praise for terrorists.

The scale of security measures is raising questions in some quarters about whether some freedoms will be impinged upon.

At least 54 people were arrested for hate speech or other acts insulting religious faiths, or for cheering the men who carried out the attacks.

No surprise in how Quinn left We used this space last week to describe the disappointing tenure of Pat Quinn’s time as Illinois governor.

We pointed out Quinn’s failed leadership on issues such as pension reform and state spending. Too often, he stood on the sidelines and, therefore, nothing got done in a timely manner.

We also pointed out how Quinn had devolved from a political reformer to typical Springfield lawmaker, finding jobs for friends and failing to change how things work in state government.

So it shouldn’t have come as much of a surprise that as Quinn left office to make way for Gov. Bruce Rauner he exhibited one last time all the characteristics that made his time in office a disappointment.

Quinn left behind “booby traps,” as one Republican lawmaker called them. Quinn signed an executive order requiring governors to release income tax details, he signed another requiring state contractors pay employees at least $10 an hour instead of the state minimum of $8.25 an hour, he appointed friends to various state government posts – including the spouses of House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton – and he failed to issue licenses to medical marijuana cultivation centers, leaving that for Rauner to deal with.

Unfortunately, that’s business as usual for Quinn, who showed Illinois voters one last time why they got it right when they voted him out of office in November.

Rauner on Tuesday reversed the nearly 200 appointments Quinn made on his way out. He has yet to decide what he will do regarding the income tax details and state contractor executive orders. Frankly, we hope he keeps in place the executive order regarding governors having to release tax returns.

With medical marijuana, Rauner’s camp said he wants to better understand how the state’s program is being run. He has criticized the existing selection process as secretive and subject to cronyism, which is par for the course in Springfield.

But the fact Quinn left these behind speaks to how Quinn’s entire tenure in Springfield played out. When Illinois voters needed leadership, solid decisions and bipartisan solutions, Quinn gave them the opposite.

Tolerance, violence and conversation VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez This column begins as a little bit of a “love letter” to Anderson Cooper. And, no, not just because I felt for the man on New Year’s Eve as Kathy Griffin ragged on him on live TV. I write because I think we should acknowledge and encourage good things when we see them.

On the night cartoonists and staff of the French satire magazine Charlie Hebdo were slaughtered, Cooper, as CNN news host on live cable TV, let a conversation happen. It was an honest, difficult, even dangerous, conversation. And it is desperately needed.

First, Cooper had as a guest human-rights activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali. She’s on a Muslim extremist “hit list” as another guest put it, and invitations for her to speak at American universities have spurred debate (Yale) and threats (at Brandeis). Just issuing an invite to her is a small act of courage, especially given the news of the day: a media outlet under attack for what it had published and people murdered for exercising free speech.

About the attacks, Hirsi Ali wrote in the Wall Street Journal: “If there is a lesson to be drawn from such a grisly episode, it is that what we believe about Islam truly doesn’t matter. This type of violence, jihad, is what they, the Islamists, believe.”

She argues that violence is embedded in Islam, the religion she was brought up in.

As the National Review put it in an editorial that day: “A religion that commands murder as the punishment for blasphemy offends the God it professes to worship.”

On CNN, author and activist Maajid Nawaz apologized to Hirsi Ali, saying that Muslims and others had failed her. “I personally wish there were more Muslims on the front lines defending your right to follow your conscience,” he said.

“What we need to be aware of is that the atrocity in Paris is the extreme expression of a general

tendency in the Islamic world to repress dissent and disagreement,” Pakistani-born British Anglican Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali, who has spoken and written extensively on religious freedom, tells me.

“We will not be rid of terror against free speech until there is reform, and where necessary, repeal of laws against freedom of speech.

The Islamic world needs to learn that criticism should be answered not by repression, violence or terror, but by reason,” he said.

In writing about Christian persecution suffered under Islamic regimes in his book “Hatred,” journalist Michael Coren writes: “Those Muslim leaders who are brave enough to call for ... dialogue and compromise tend to speak for small and generally fringe Islamic communities, and they are usually ignored or even condemned by the greater Muslim world when they do speak out in such a way.” But this could be changing, as evidenced by remarks recently by Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

“It’s inconceivable that the thinking that we hold most sacred should cause the entire Islamic world to be a source of anxiety, danger, killing and destruction for the rest of the world,” el-Sisi said, according to one CNN translation.

But there’s no sugarcoating the obstacles Muslims face. As Coren

writes: “There is ... simply no concept of the separation between mosque and state within orthodox Islam, so that at best the minority religions, including Christianity, can only aspire to toleration and never complete equality. This is totally contrary to the modern Christian notion of church and state, and has been so for centuries.

So while even a majority Christian society can welcome Muslims as full and equal citizens, a majority Islamic nation can provide a grudging tolerance in theory, and usually a painful sufferance in reality. This leads to twin solitudes of understanding,” Coren writes, “or a conversation taking place in two different languages with no convincing or reliable translator.”

In the coming days, weeks and years, the media should play no small role in hosting, covering and encouraging those conversations.

By watching, reading and subscribing to clear and courageous voices, you support that work.

Let’s never fail to call evil by its name, never look away from it, and never avoid hard conversations.

We see how it can be a matter of life and death.

Lewis off to a spiking hot start

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Four games into the regular season, the Lewis University men’s volleyball team already has exceeded preseason expectations.

After sweeping two top 10 nationally ranked teams in UC Irvine and Stanford, the Flyers came home to Neil Carey Arena on Wednesday night to beat Carthage, 25-16, 25-16, 25-14.

Even though it was an easier game than against the past three opponents, it was an important victory to get under the Flyers’ belt.

“Of course, you’re opening at home, you want to win in front of your home crowd and fans,” senior outside hitter Geoff Powell said. “Even though Carthage is a great opponent, we knew that we just had to take care of our side and take care of business. We know our team is good, so we have high expectations for ourselves. It’s just about obtaining that expectation.”

They did just that. Powell, a preseason first-team All-American and 2014 first-team All-American, played a well-rounded game against Carthage. Powell scored five kills off nine attempts and had a team-high nine serve-receive passes and seven digs in the two games he played.

Preseason second-team All-American and 2014 second-team honorable mention Greg Petty led the Flyers (31) offensively with seven kills. Petty helped Lewis jump from being ranked ninth nationally to fifth, and he earned MIVA offensive player of the week honors.

Both senior powerhouses attribute their likelihood of continued success to how strong and well-rounded the team is.

“Just as long as we take care of business and keep doing what we’re doing, we should be fine,” Petty said. “It’s a great thing for both of us to get honors at the beginning of the season, but it just shows what our team could do. If we weren’t good as a team, we wouldn’t have been considered for that. It’s a great honor for both of us, and hopefully we can get it again at the end of the season.”

If the Flyers continue to live up to their expectations, they should go far because of the weapons they have across the net.

“There’s eight seniors,” Flyers coach Dan Friend said. “They’ve been through this, they understand it. We’re talking about the end goal and how to get there. We know it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Now, we’re at home, and it’s an opportunity to establish some home-court feel and homecourt advantage.”

Lewis’ strong suit may be its heavy hitters, but the Flyers are almost equally solid defensively and in pass-

ing. They had only one serve-receive error while having eight aces on the night. Junior setter Scott Fifer, who is stepping into 2014 All-American BJ Bulldog’s role, also played strong with 16 assists and four digs in the two games he played.

The Flyers’ hot start – while great for the school – also provides a boost for area boys volleyball, which is improving continually. The gap between men’s volleyball in the Midwest and West keeps getting slimmer.

“In general, you see more high

schools add boys volleyball in the Illinois area,” Friend said. “It’s a sport that’s continuing to grow, in the Chicago area for sure. Lewis kind of fell off a little bit there, some stuff had happened, but we were able to rebuild the program because there’s so much boys volleyball in the area. If you look at our team, more than 50 percent of the guys are Midwest guys.

“I think that we’ve always had a couple teams in the MIVA that were really good, but now we’re seeing that not only is it two teams, we’re four, five, six teams deep in the MIVA, which is something that it hasn’t been in the past. To see that and to continue to play that level of volleyball shows that the parity isn’t as far off as it used to be, and it’s a good thing. It continues to help the growth of boys volleyball in the area.”

Presniakovas was 9 of 11 from the field and 3 of 4 from 3-point range as he matched his career high with 23 points.

Kennedy connected on three of four 3-point tries en route to his 21-point performance. Junior Ilya Ilyayev finished with 19 points, while sophomore Jake Raspopovich contributed 14 points and seven assists.

JOLIET – The Bishop McNamara’s girls basketball team entered Wednesday’s game against Joliet Catholic Academy as the state’s top-ranked Class 2A squad.

The Irish showed why they are deserving of such accolades after grabbing an early lead and keeping it throughout the clash of two of the East Suburban Catholic Conference’s best.

With Rutgers-bound guard Khadaizha Sanders scoring 32 points while running the attack and distributing the ball, Bishop Mac captured a 75-67 win over the Angels.

“Khadaizha is a player, and she’s the glue to that team,” JCA coach Kenny Battle said.

“She got her teammates involved tonight, and that was the difference right there. They came in and wanted it more than we did, and that was the end result.

“Close doesn’t count. We got it to two, and then we had three turnovers and a bad shot – and the next thing that you know, you go from two points to being

“I’m proud of the kids,” Rutter said. “This is not an easy team to play against since they’re real athletic and real long with some great shooters. We came to play and did some really nice things.

We struggled there for a little bit, but that had a lot to do with them.

“And it helps to have a nice point guard who can run the show. She does a nice job, and the girls around her stepped up tonight and played well.”

Remembering ‘G’ piano benefit is set for Jan. 24 SUBMITTED REPORTS

The fourth-annual Remembering “G” Dueling Pianos Event is scheduled the night of Saturday, Jan. 24, at Joliet Catholic Academy.

Proceeds from the event will benefit JCA scholarships and initiatives in memory of former Joliet Catholic baseball pitcher Andrew Giaudrone, who died at age 20 while playing pickup basketball at St. Raymond Grade School.

Lewis’ Tarin cited: Lewis sophomore Victor Tarin has been named the PNC Great Lakes Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week.

Tarin didn’t lose a race in two meets, earning victories in five individual events and two relays. Against Olivet Nazarene, he won the 100 freestyle (46.77), 100 butterfly (49.53) and 200 freestyle (1:43.19). His 100 butterfly time set a Lewis pool record. Tarin also helped the Flyers to a win in the 400 medley relay (3:27.45).

In a road meet at Florida Institute of Technology, Tarin won the 200 free (1:43.30) and 100 free (47.31), and he swam the third leg of Lewis’ win in the 200 medley relay in 1:35.79.

Indiana St. tops Illinois St. in OT The ASSOCIATED PRESS TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Tre’ Bennett sank a layup in the final seconds of overtime to give Indiana State a 71-70 victory over Illinois State on Wednesday night.

Bennett’s game-winning shot came with three seconds to play in overtime after Illinois State had taken a 70-69 lead on a Daishon Knight jumper with 21 seconds remaining. Bennett finished with 12 points for the Sycamores (9-8, 5-0, Missouri Valley Conference).

The Sycamores took advantage of turnovers by Illinois State (10-7, 2-3) in the second period to open a 44-39 lead midway.

Wizards 105, Bulls 99

CHICAGO – Paul Pierce had 22 points and the Washington Wizards beat the Bulls, 105-99, Wednesday, despite Derrick Rose’s season-high 32.

John Wall scored 10 of his 21 in the fourth quarter. Bradley Beal added 17, and the Wizards knocked off the Central division leaders for the second time in six days.

Washington trailed by as much as 11 in the first half but outscored the Bulls, 32-19, in the third quarter to take a seven-point lead to the fourth. The Wizards hung on after the Bulls pulled within one, giving the Bulls their fourth loss in five games.

In the past four years – Jerry Angelo’s final season as general manager and Phil Emery’s three seasons as GM – the Bears have gone from one step from the Super Bowl to the ground floor. They need help on multiple levels – more talent, real leadership, better locker room chemistry, better player development, stability at quarterback, an identity on defense and better game-day coaching, just for starters.

More than anything, the Bears have to get back on their feet before they start to take the steps necessary to catch the Lions and the leaps and bounds necessary to catch the Packers. Fox seems as if he’s well-suited for what the Bears need at this time.

What are the odds that 37-year-old Ryan Pace is going to hit a home run and find his Sean Payton in his first atbat? He could – we don’t know that much about him. But maybe his best bet is to take the solid double and go for the fences after he’s developed real power.

Pace doesn’t need someone to hold his hand – if he does, the Bears hired the wrong guy. But a veteran coach such as Fox – who has been a head

Ralph Richardson, one of the best thespians ever, said, “Actors are the jockeys of literature. Others supply the horses, the plays, and we simply make them run.”

When a cast takes its bow, I always think that the playwright ought to be there, too. But if the actors are bad, the play will not work.

However, the key word in Richardson’s observation for today’s deal is “others.” Bridge is full of “normal” plays, which work most of the time.

But when an “other” play is needed, that sorts out the experts from the less capable.

This deal occurred in a private game. North-South were using the weak no-trump, in which an opening bid of one no-trump shows 12-14 points. So South’s rebid indicated a strong no-trump, 15-17 points. This had an effect on the opening lead of West, who preferred the spade four, an unbid suit, to a heart, dummy’s bid suit. (Note that if South had opened one strong no-trump, North would have used Stayman, South would have denied a four-card major and North would have jumped to three no-trump. Then West surely would have led a heart.)

East took the first trick with his spade king and stuck to the standard script when he returned his second spade. But South won in his hand, played a diamond to dummy’s king, returned to his hand with a spade and played three more rounds of diamonds. He had nine tricks: three spades, one heart, four diamonds and one club.

Could East have found the fatal heart shift at trick two? It was tough.

You may feel that you already know this information, but when you or a loved one is struggling to breathe, it helps to have a set of written instructions to refer to.

Asthma action plans are often divided into “zones.”

You should be able to tell what zone your son is in from his symptoms. The action plan will tell you what you need to do in each zone. For example: • GREEN ZONE: Doing well.

No coughing, wheezing, chest tightness or shortness of breath; can do all usual activities. Take prescribed long-term controller medicine.

• YELLOW ZONE: Getting worse. Coughing, wheezing, chest tightness or shortness of breath; waking at night; can do some, but not all, usual activities.

Add quick-relief medicine.

• RED ZONE: Medical alert! Very short of breath; quick-relief medicines don’t help; cannot do usual activities; symptoms no better after 24 hours in yellow zone. Get medical help now.

People live with asthma for many years and come to know a lot about it. So a written asthma action plan may seem unnecessary.

But in my experience, people who suddenly get sick sometimes forget to take the steps they know they should. A written asthma action plan can be a valuable reminder at a moment of trouble.

Dear Doctor K: My son was recently diagnosed with asthma. His doctor wants to put together an asthma “action plan.” What is that?

Dear Reader: Asthma is a complicated and serious disease. It can behave differently from hour to hour and from day to day.

A person with asthma needs a plan for what to do at each stage of the disease.

I’ll describe the elements of the plan in a minute, but first a little background on asthma itself.

Asthma assaults the lung’s airways. The airways are the tubes through which the air you breathe enters and leaves your lungs. During an asthma attack, the airways get narrower as the muscles surrounding them constrict.

The airways also become inflamed, and mucus fills the narrowed passageways.

As a result, the flow of air is partially or completely blocked.

A mild asthma attack may cause wheezing, difficulty breathing or a persistent cough. Symptoms of a more severe attack can include extreme shortness of breath, chest tightness, flared nostrils and pursed lips.

Two types of medications are used to treat asthma: controllers and relievers. Controllers – usually inhaled corticosteroids – are medicines taken regularly to reduce the likelihood of asthma attacks. They reduce inflammation, which decreases mucus production and reduces tightening of airway muscles.

Relievers, or “rescue” medications, are used just during asthma attacks.

They stop or reduce the severity of the attack by relaxing the muscles around the airways to improve airflow. Bronchodilators are often used as rescue medications. (I’ve put an illustration showing how medications treat asthma on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Dear Abby: I am 42 years old and a divorced father of two. Earlier this year, I caused a fatal drunk driving accident. Once I came to and realized what I had done, I accepted responsibility and pled guilty to my crime. I have never before been in trouble with the authorities.

I believe God has forgiven me. I know my extremely supportive family and friends have also forgiven me. But how do I forgive myself? I think about it and cry daily for my victim and that family. I pray they will find some comfort that I am behind bars.

I plan to volunteer and use my time to help others as I have done in the past, once I am free. I also plan to tell my story to as many people as will listen to help stop the senseless act of driving under the influence.

I can never, and will never, forget what I have done.

But I know I must forgive myself in order to move forward and start helping others.
