Canadian booked on drug charges $1.2M worth of cocaine found during vehicle stop Friday

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com HOMER GLEN – Police say a Quebec man was transporting more than $1 million worth of drugs when he was pulled over Friday for talking on his cellphone.

Sylvain Bergeron, 42, was stopped at 6:20 p.m. while driving on Interstate 355, according to state police. Prosecutors said troopers found an estimated $1.2 million

worth of cocaine in the vehicle.

Bergeron was booked into the county jail at 10:52 p.m.

Friday on charges of delivering more than Sylvain 900 grams of cocaine, Bergeron drug possession, improper lane usage and using a cellphone while driving.

Court reports identify Bergeron

as the director of security at Stanstead College, a co-ed boarding school for grades seven to 12 in Stanstead, Quebec, Canada. His bond was set Saturday at $2 million.

Judge Roger Rickmon upheld that bail amount Monday afternoon when Bergeron appeared in court via video. Bergeron also would have to surrender his passport and be subject to drug screenings if he could post the $200,000 required for his release from jail.

Police: Man stabbed cousin over dishes

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT TOWNSHIP – A dispute over unwashed dishes allegedly led a Missouri man to attack his cousin with a knife Saturday.

Will County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said the 41-yearold victim was expected to survive stab wounds to his hands, shoulders, forearms and face next to his eye.

About 8 p.m. deputies were called

to a residence in the 18000 block of South Wolf Road where a fight was reported between the victim and Randy P. Wolk, 32, of Perryville, Mo., Hoffmeyer said.

“The victim and a partner have just started a tree service business and returned from a job to the house where they are staying with Wolk.

When they began fighting over [Wolk] not washing the dishes, Wolk took out a one-and-a-half foot knife with a curved blade,” Hoffmeyer said.

The victim’s business partner called police and drove him to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox. Police reports said a knife was found inside the house.

“Deputies followed footprints in the snow to find Wolk hiding two miles away in a metal shed,” Hoffmeyer said.

Wolk was arrested and booked into the county jail on charges of aggravated battery and aggravated domestic battery.

Finalists selected for downtown Joliet plan

By JIM DALLKE jdallke@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Six consultants have been selected by the city of Joliet and the City Center Partnership as finalists to work on the Downtown Plan, an initiative aimed at revitalizing downtown Joliet.

The finalists are scheduled to give public presentations from 1 to 5 p.m Wednesday at the Joliet Historical Museum, 204 N. Ottawa St. in Joliet.

Each finalist will give a 20-minute presentation.

The six finalists are: Teska and Associates; Camiros; Houseal Lavigne Associates; Ratio Architects; The Lakota Group; and Etera Design Studio.

“This is different than [any other

downtown plan] that has been done in the past in the sense that this is an economic development plan,” Pam Owens, executive director of the Joliet City Center Partnership, said last month. “This is about identifying what we have, what are our assets downtown and where are our shortcomings.”

The City Center Partnership and the city of Joliet will make a final selection in late January and a recommendation to hire is expected to be considered by the City Council on Feb. 4.

The Downtown Plan is expected to take 9 to 12 months and will focus on economic development, an inventory of existing buildings and uses and improving transportation issues.

PATCHING UP PAVEMENT Potholes pop up as area sees drastic temperature change

OLIET – Those commuting to work Monday were probably thrilled to see the dark pavement and white lines emerge as warmer temperatures melted the thick snow and ice from last week’s storm.

But the freeze-to-thaw process has created another major obstacle for area drivers: potholes.

Roadway crews from the city of Joliet were out in full-force Monday patching potholes along several major roads.

Mike Eulitz, roadway engineer for the city of Joliet, said his office has been inundated with calls since temperatures started to rise late last week. “[Potholes] are a big issue right now,” Eulitz said. “We’re patching potholes today all over.”

Eulitz’s crews focused on main roads Monday, which included Black Road, Essington Road, Caton Farm Road and Ingalls Avenue. Many other neighborhoods also are experiencing pothole issues, Eulitz said, and will be addressed later in the week.

It will take the city about one week to fill all the potholes, Eulitz said.

Joliet residents who notice potholes are encouraged to call the Joliet Roadways Division at 815-724-3650. way cracks and then froze when temperatures plummeted last week, Eulitz said. As the ice expanded it caused larger cracks in the road.

Eulitz expects this to be an ongoing issues as the water from melting snow freezes again later in the week, creating similar problems for the roads.

“It will come up again,” Eulitz said. “It will be an ongoing issue for the remainder of winter. We’ll hit it hard again in the springtime. Right now it’s more of a stop-gap measure. … It’s a lot of repeating.”

Will County road crews found some of the most severe pothole problems on Caton Farm Road on the far west side of Joliet, Assistant County Engineer Jeff Ronaldson said. Another trouble spot was along 143rd Street in Homer Glen.

But Ronaldson said, “I wouldn’t say it’s out of the ordinary.”

Roads have held up fairly well so far, Ronaldson said, because they have yet to be subject to the repeated freeze-thaw cycles that tear up asphalt.

“This is the first cycle that we’ve had for awhile because it’s been so cold,” Ronaldson said. “We really haven’t had a cycle for while.”

Murder suspect takes stand, says killing was self-defense Defendant’s uncle arrested in court after outburst

By JIM DALLKE jdallke@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A man on trial for murder took the stand Monday, claiming he was raped and that the killing was done in self-defense.

Rodney Julun’s emotional testimony at one point evoked a shout of support from his uncle, who was handcuffed and jailed for contempt of court because of the outburst.

Julun, of Chicago, is charged with the 2011 murder of Dwight Jones, 59. He testified that Jones drove him to his home in New Lenox Township, asked him to perform sexual acts and eventually raped him.

After the rape, Julun said, he punched Jones twice in the neck and then began hitting him in the head with a lamp, which ultimately lead to his death.

While Julun was describing the details of the rape, during which he had several long pauses and appeared close to breaking down, his uncle shouted out: “I love you, man.”

At that point Judge Daniel Rozak sent the jury out of the courtroom, told the uncle he was in contempt of court, and had him cuffed and arrested.

He was sentenced to 180 days in the Will County Jail.

“Anybody else who wants to open their mouth, no matter what side, can expect the same thing,” Rozak said. “I will not tolerate an outburst.”

The man was identified by a family member as Ju-

lun’s uncle. He was among at least eight members of Julun’s family at the trial.

On cross examination, Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Christopher Regis asked Julun: “Is this your final version?

Is this the version you are going with? Because I’ll give you one last time to change your mind.”

Julun’s testimony Monday was inconsistent with the police interrogation video that was taken at the time of his arrest and played last week for the jury.

“This is the truth,” Julun said.

“Everything I told Rodney Julun police that day was a lie. A majority of it was a lie.”

Prosecutors argued that on June 10, 2011, Julun rode with Jones from Chicago to New Lenox Township with the intent to rob him. When the robbery didn’t go as planned, Julun struck Jones in the head with a lamp, drove off in Jones’ Volkswagen Jetta and returned the next day with two accomplices to rob the home, prosecutors said.

In the taped interrogation, Julun said Jones was “flirting” with him in Chicago and “wanted to get a drink.” Jones then drove the two to his home, at which point Jones began to make sexual advances toward Julun, the defendant said in the tape.

Julun later admitted in the tape he hit Jones

with the lamp after Jones grabbed him from behind and threw him on his bed.

Then Julun took the Jones’ cellphone, some money and drove the Jetta back to Chicago.

When Julun returned the next day, he took two TVs, jewelry – which he tried to pawn at a pawn shop – and a laptop, which he sold on the street for $200, he said on the tape.

Julun’s testimony Monday was markedly different. The sexual advances were actually a rape, his intent was never to rob Jones, and it was actually two other Chicago men, John White and David Reed, who robbed the home, Julun said. He did admit to stealing the cellphone and attempting to pawn the jewelry.

Julun’s inconsistent statements were because of his loyalty to his friends and his humiliation from the rape, he said Monday.

Initially he didn’t want to implicate Jones and Reed, who both pleaded guilty in February for their roles in the crime.

Also, Julun never reported the rape to police or told detectives because he was “embarrassed” and “didn’t feel like a man,” he said.

Julun said the only reason he got in Jones’ car in the first place was because Jones asked if Julun “wanted to make some quick cash.” Julun did not anticipate Jones was interested in sex until he arrived at the house, he said Monday.

Closing arguments in the case are scheduled for Tuesday morning.

OBITUARIES MARY ANN CARROLL Born: January 06, 1936; Joliet, IL Died: January 12, 2014; Lockport, IL Mary Ann Carroll (nee Stasko), age 78, of Lockport, IL passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Sunday, January 12, 2014. Mary Ann was born on January 6, 1936 in Joliet, IL to Albert and Francis Stasko.

Mary Ann is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Frank R. Carroll; five devoted sons, Frank III, David Sr. (Mary Jo), John (Beth), Daniel (Stacy) of Florida, and Jeffrey (Amy); her precious grandchildren, Lindsey, Frank IV, Nathan, Caitlin, David Jr., Andrew, Rebecca, Matthew, Mark, John, Kathryn, Ellen, Connery, Courtnie, Jessica, Chloe, and Simone; eight cherished great-grandchildren; sister, Anna Mae Ojeda; brother, James (Connie) Stasko; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and dear friend, Judy Philbert.

Preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Francis (nee Videtich) Stasko; grandson, John Michael Carroll; brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Mary Ann Stasko; and sister, Therese Giuliani (nee Stasko).

Mary Ann was a graduate of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Grade School and St. Francis Academy. She worked for many years as a hair stylist.

Mary Ann met Frank at the age of 14 and they were married four years later on February 20, 1954 at Fort Leonard Wood Hospital Chapel in Missouri. They were planning their 60th wedding anniversary next month.

Mary Ann was dedicated to her Catholic faith with a special devotion to Our Blessed Virgin Mary. She was loving, kind, and devoted to her family. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.

In lieu of flowers and donations, masses may be offered in Mary Ann's name to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Joliet.

A Celebration of Mary Ann's life will begin on Thursday, January 16, 2014 with a visitation from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Joliet.

He loved all animals, enjoyed music and the arts. One of his favorite pastimes/hobbies was riding and showing horses across the country with his daughter Molly at his side. As a younger man, Jerry excelled at all sports and was extremely athletic, in particular, tennis, skiing and golf were among his talents. His greatest joy in life was his family, especially sitting around with them telling his stories.

Former judge’s son arrested again on heroin charges

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The son of a former Will County judge who currently is on parole for heroin charges was allegedly caught Saturday buying the drug again.

Cmdr. Al Roechner said officers were at Osgood Street and Eastern Avenue when they saw a white car pull over.

“It appeared the man sitting in the passenger seat engaged in a hand-to-hand drug transaction with a man on the street,” Roechner said.

Police stopped the car and asked Matthew A. Lechwar, 31, if he was carrying any drugs.

“He said they could check the car and got out while a tissue fell from his pants. The tissue contained nine baggies with 2.9 grams of heroin,” Roechner said.

Lechwar, of the 200 block of Madison Street, was arrested and booked into the county jail on a charge of drug possession.

The driver was ticketed for stopping in the roadway, Roechner said.

Lechwar was released on parole in June after serving six

months in a prison boot camp.

He received an eight-year prison sentence for delivery of heroin after pleading guilty in November 2012. Lechwar was originally charged with a class X felony when he was arrested in March 2012 by Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad agents.

Lechwar has been charged with other drug offenses, including an unlawful possession of marijuana charge in 2000 in Kendall County, a 2003 charge in Will County of driving under the influence in Will County.

He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a year of court super-

vision.

In 2004 he was charged with possession of a controlled substance in Grundy County, and in 2006, Lechwar pleaded guilty to possession of heroin with intent to deliver in Will County.

He entered the county’s drug court program and successfully finished the program and the charge was dismissed.

In 2010 he was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance in Cook County.

Lechwar is the son of former Will County Chief Judge Rodney Lechwar.

Fingerprint machine to help with concealed carry applications

BY JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County residents wanting to apply for their concealed– carry license can do so more conveniently now that the Grundy County Sheriff’s office is buying a new fingerprint processing machine.

If fingerprints are submitted with a concealed-carry application, the Illinois State Police is required to process that application in no more than 90 days. Those who don’t submit fingerprints could wait as long as 120 days.

Currently, Grundy County’s fingerprinting machine is not equipped to submit fingerprints for concealed-carry applicants, forcing Grundy County applicants to drive to Joliet or pay a private company for the service.

“I would request that we get a new machine now,”Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan said. “[Grundy County residents] can come

to the jail, get it done and speed up the process rather than rolling ink prints and taking months to get the process completed.”

The Grundy County Finance Committee unanimously approved to appropriate no more than $15,000 from the county’s contingency fund for the new machine – which is estimated to cost about $24,000 – at Monday’s Finance Committee meeting. The remaining $9,000 needed for the machine will be paid by the sheriff’s department.

“It will be providing a valuable service to Grundy County,” Grundy County Board Chairman Ron Severson said.

This decision comes as the sheriff’s department already was shopping for a new machine.

The current equipment is 10 years old, outdated and in poor condition, Callahan said. The estimated cost to repair the current machine was $9,000.

“I strongly believe we shouldn’t invest money into that machine because we’re going to have to replace it in two years anyway,” Callahan said.

The new machine could be installed and ready for use within the

week now that the funds have been approved, but the county still must decide how much to charge for concealed-carry fingerprinting.

“I can guarantee you there is already a county that has the live scan machines and is charging fees,” Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said.

“We’re going to see what they’re charging and obviously Grundy County will want to be comparable.”

Helland said the fee will be “reasonable” and that the county may even price the service competitively to attract applicants from other counties to drive to Grundy for their fingerprinting.

The pricing structure could be different for residents and nonresidents and may offer discounts to veterans and others.

Based on the high volume of applicants, the finance committee agreed that the machine has the potential to raise enough revenue from a service fee to potentially pay for

the new machine.

“I think there’s a revenue stream to pay for this,” Severson said.

In just two days, Jan. 5-7, 125 Grundy residents applied for their concealed-carry licenses, Helland said.

Concealed-carry law – allowing those with the proper license to carry a concealed handgun on their person – went into effect in Illinois on the first day of 2014.

As of Jan. 7, the Illinois State Police reported that more than 11,000 concealed-carry license applications had already been accepted, with 4,525 of those being submitted on Jan. 5 alone.

Severson said he expects a high volume of applicants in Grundy County.

“I want to get [my application] done, but right now, I have to drive to Joliet for the service,” Helland said. “If we can get the machine in 10 days, I’ll wait.”

Skate park may soon come to New Lenox

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – A skate park encouraging youths to be healthy and give back to the community may open in New Lenox by the end of February.

On Monday, New Lenox village board members unanimously approved granting a special use permit for the owners of Drop In Skate Park, which will be located in the 800 block of Country Creek Drive.

The skate park is the brainchild of Paul McCullough

and his father, Kevin McCullough.

“I started skateboarding in high school,” Paul McCullough said. “I made a lot of friends and I just realized a lot of them were good people and wanted a place to hang out.”

All the owners need now is a remodeling permit after they receive drawings from the architect for the project; that may happen next week, Kevin McCullough said. He said it would take an initial $80,000 to run the skate park when it opens.

board members voted on Tuesday contained a new requirement for the owners to post a sign at the entrance informing people there is no turn around for traffic. The sign also is required to direct people to striped parking spaces.

According to the Drop In Skate Park website, the skate park owners aim to advance skateboarding and scootering skills for all people in a fun and safe environment.

Drop In Skate Park will be an indoor skate park located inside of a warehouse

that used to be a youth center for about 10 years, Kevin McCullough said. The business will occupy 6,000 square feet of the warehouse and contain mini ramps, stairs, rails, video game systems, pool tables and healthy snacks.

The healthy snacks is part of an overall effort to encourage healthy living among youths. Paul McCullough said Drop In Skate Park will have programs for children to help them eat healthier and lose weight, along with teaching them how to skate.

Kevin McCullough said the skate park also will encourage people to give back to the community. He said during opening weekend, people can skate for free if they donate a can of food.

“It seems to have gotten dropped by the wayside in our culture,” Kevin McCullough said about community support.

Joining the owners in their venture is Paul McCullough’s friends and partners, Alex Baker and Nick Sakiewicz.

The response from the community is positive.

“We have some 1,000 people already on [our] Facebook,” Kevin McCullough said. “Pretty much every day I get someone asking me ‘are you open yet?’ ” Mayor Tim Baldermann said granting the special use permit to the skate park owners is an example of how village officials try to appeal to a wide range of community members.

“We certainly encourage that kind of business and we’re hoping they are successful,” he said.

The next village board meeting will be on Jan. 27.

“I think this community could sustain an outlet mall,” she said. “It’s revenues, it’s jobs. It’s bringing people to the city.”

Thuringer and other residents brainstormed about the city’s future during a community visioning

workshop Monday at the Crest Hill branch library of the White Oak Library District. Thuringer envisioned the outlet mall being built on state-owned land near the library. Other residents proposed building a sports complex near the library, as well as a new city hall.

The workshop was led

by Chicago-based planning consultants Houseal Lavigne, which is helping the city update its comprehensive plan. The city’s current comprehensive plan was completed in 1992.

Crest Hill received a $100,000 state grant to update its comprehensive plan. The city is contributing $40,000 to the project.

About 40 residents and officials attended Monday’s session. They were then broken up into different groups to discuss what they would like to see in the city.

Other ideas included developing a town center in the city where people could congregate, putting light industry along Broadway Street to expand the city’s tax base, and expanding

the sidewalk system and repairing existing sidewalks “We are hearing the needs and wants of our residents,” Crest Hill Mayor Ray Soliman said. “This is a great exercise to have the community be part of the comprehensive plan.”

The next planning session will be at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 27 at the fire district headquarters on Renwick Road.

The city in November started working on updating the comprehensive plan.

In December, the city gathered comments from local businesses and community members on their vision for the community in two separate workshops.

most built out,” Crest Hill Community Development Director Amber Miller has said. “Most of the land we have remaining is for commercial and retail business development or redevelopment.”

Along with updating the comprehensive plan, city officials also want to bolster the city’s identity.

“We want to make sure we have a strong brand,” Miller said. “We want to make sure we are identifiable and marketable for business development.”

Mobile medical center visits Morris monthly

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Korean War veteran Jack Kutches walked out of the veterans Mobile Medical Unit parked in front of the Morris American Legion on Monday with a smile on his face.

“I never needed it before because I have my own insurance,” Kutches said. “But now I have these hearing aids and I have to pay for those.”

The veterans MMU is 38-foot long traveling health clinic featuring two separate exam rooms and a counseling room that visits Morris the first Monday of every month.

The mobile medical center is offered through Edward Hines Jr. Veteran Affairs Hospital.

January’s visit was rescheduled for Monday because of the extreme cold temperatures last week.

“We wanted to bring health care to the veterans because a lot of veterans have difficulty getting to the main hospital and live in more rural areas,” said Charity Hardison, public affairs officer for the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital. “That was the primary focus – being able to reach those that have a difficult time getting to the hospital.”

Ken Buck, superintendent of the Grundy County Veterans Assistance Commission, said the closest veterans’ hospital to Morris and much of Grundy County is located in Joliet and another nearby in LaSalle. With the new MMU coming to Morris once a month, local veterans will not have to travel as far to get many of the services offered at those veterans

“We don’t have a veterans affairs clinic around here,” Buck said. “By having this bus here in town, it gives another opportunity for veterans to have access to their healthcare.”

The unit is staffed with about five health professionals, including a registered nurse and a social worker. The MMU is equipped to provide health screens, flu shots, blood pressure checks,

mental health evaluations and more.

“In the near future, we should have a nurse practitioner who will do medication, full exams

and things like that,” said Tyler Goodwine, social worker for the Hines MMU. This is only the second month the MMU has vis-

ited Morris, and only the second year the MMU program has existed. So far, Hardison said the MMU has served a few thousand local veterans.

“We unveiled the unit in the late summer of 2012,” Hardison said. “It’s not the only MMU in the country, but it is the only one in the Midwest.”

Veterans do not need to make an appointment to visit the MMU and can receive a free health screening upon arrival.

Veterans also can register for Veterans Affairs health care offered through Hines Hospital while visiting the unit.

Hardison said most veterans will end up paying little to no money for the services provided.

She said each veteran is placed in a priority group and will receive different rates based on a variety of different factors.

“The important thing is that when they first show up at the MMU, it is

free of charge for them,” Hardison said. “They can get a screening and they can get registered to see what their eligibility is for routine care.”

Hines Veteran Affairs Hospital is in Hines and provides care to about 54,000 veterans, primarily from Cook, DuPage and Will counties.

“Hines covers a good chunk of this area – Will, Grundy, Kendall, Kane,” Buck said. “Any veterans who are enrolled through the VA system are probably enrolled in Hines health care.”

Buck said they decided to bring the MMU to Morris after it made a visit during last year’s Grundy County Corn Festival.

He said the feedback for the unit was and continues to be positive.

“It’s an excellent opportunity for veterans, especially if they have questions about what services they can get beside healthcare through the hospital system,” Buck said. “They can talk directly to providers. My office can answer some questions, but it’s always nice to get answers directly from the source.”

Rockdale man arrested for sexual abuse

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com ROCKDALE – Police say a man chased a woman and three young children through a snowstorm earlier this month after he was seen trying to molest an 8-year-old girl.

Chief Robert Dykstra said Juan D. Mojica, 28, of Rockdale was terminated on the morning of Jan. 2 from his job at a warehouse in Bolingbrook and spent the afternoon drinking in the garage of a Meadow Avenue residence.

“A woman was giving her 1-year-old son a bath while her daughters were playing, but the 5-year-old girl came in and said she couldn’t find her 8-yearold sister,” Dykstra said.

NEWS BRIEFS State plans to file rules for ‘petcoke’ CHICAGO – Illinois officials are finalizing statewide regulations for the storage and handling of petroleum coke.

Gov. Pat Quinn announced Monday that emergency rules will be filed with the Illinois Pollution Control Board, which will review them. State officials hope they take effect before the end of the month.

“Petcoke” is a byproduct of oil refining that’s been accumulating along shipping channels and has sparked health and environmental concerns.

The new rules require storage facilities to install dust suppression systems, among other things.

School evacuated due to suspicious device KATY, Texas – A student was taken into custody Monday after a bomb squad was dispatched to a Houston-area high school for a “potential explosive device” in a campus building, according to school district officials.

The Katy school district announced on its website that Seven Lakes High School was safely evacuated Monday morning after campus police learned of a “perceived threat.” A Harris County sheriff’s office bomb squad responded.

Officials with the district about 20 miles west of Houston said on the website that the potential explosive was later identified and that a “student suspect is in custody.” They did not elaborate.

Students were evacuated to an enclosed area on the baseball and football fields.

Gun applications overwhelm

By DON BABWIN The Associated Press CHICAGO – More than 1,000 requests for concealed-carry gun permits are pouring in each day in the nation’s last state to allow the practice, sparking concerns among Illinois law enforcement officials that they might fall behind on weeding out applicants with a history of violence.

The Cook County Sheriff’s office says it already has identified about 120 applications it plans to contest since the online application process was

opened to most state residents Jan. 5. Chicago Police Department officials, locked in a battle to control high-profile gang violence, say they, too, are worried about keeping up with the flood of applications, while downstate sheriff’s departments said they might not have the capacity to meet the new law’s vetting requirement in the time allowed.

Illinois State Police officials insist a full state review will assure that permits don’t land in the hands of those who shouldn’t have them. And with 90 days to do the

job after the 30-day window closes for local law enforcement agencies to make their objections, the agency has far more time than its counterparts in some other states, including Pennsylvania, where law enforcement has 45 days to investigate, and Wisconsin, where the state has 21 days.

But local law enforcement officials say they were not given the resources for a task that was supposed to provide an extra safeguard: a 30-day window to ferret out applicants who might meet the state standards but

have something in their backgrounds that could render their applications too risky to approve.

Unlike the State Police, which received millions of dollars to do the background checks, and unlike Wisconsin, where the state Justice Department also received additional funding, in Illinois, local law enforcement agencies were not given any more money.

That means, said Cara Smith, a top adviser to Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, that many applications won’t be adequately reviewed by the depart-

ment. Or, she said, in a state where 400,000 applications are expected to be submitted the first year, there is a danger that the office won’t even get a chance to so much as glance at some applications in the 30-day objection period.

“If this law was designed to find people who are otherwise qualified and have something in their background that deserves a closer look –º it’s not going to work,” said Cara Smith, a top adviser overseeing the permits review for Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart.

W.Va. facility flew under regulatory radar

By MITCH WEISS and RAY HENRY The Associated Press CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The facility whose chemical spill contaminated the water supply for 300,000 West Virginia residents was barely scrutinized, flying largely under the radar of government regulators who viewed it as a low-risk operation – but in reality, a problem at a key holding wall went undetected and unreported at Freedom Industries Inc. The chemicals stored at Freedom’s facility near the Elk River are not considered hazardous enough by regulators to prompt routine inspections. As a result, the chemical storage terminal was a low priority for regulators, who must pick and choose how to allocate scarce manpower when enforcing environmental laws.

And those chemicals

were stored behind a brick-and-concrete block dike that seems to have had structural problems – an issue the company apparently was aware of.

A state official says the president told regulators that Freedom had put $1 million into an escrow account to fix the wall that

ultimately failed to hold Thursday’s spill, which resulted in a five-day ban on tap water. The ban was lifted for some areas Monday afternoon.

State environmental officials would not have seen the dike problems – they say they never had reason to inspect the site.

By DAVID KOENIG and JIM SALTER The Associated Press DALLAS – The pilots of a Southwest Airlines flight that mistakenly landed at the wrong Missouri airport were grounded Monday, less than a day after they touched down at a small airfield that gave them only half as much room as normal to stop the jet.

Southwest Flight 4013 was traveling Sunday evening from Chicago’s Midway Airport to Branson Airport but instead landed at tiny Taney County Airport seven miles away.

No one was hurt, but after the 124 passengers were let off the plane, they noticed the airliner had come dangerously close to the end of the runway, where it could have tumbled down a steep embankment if it had left the pavement.

Rosewood Care Center acquired for $250M

Lincolnwood-based Cahill Group announced Monday that it has completed the $250 million acquisition of the Rosewood health care facilities.

The St. Louis-based Rosewood had operated 14 facilities in Illinois and Missouri, including a 120bed skilled nursing facility at 3401 Hennepin Drive in Joliet. The facility opened in 1991 and employs 110 people.

The acquisition includes skilled nursing facilities, senior living, home health and other related management and service companies in St. Louis and Illinois. The new company will be renamed Cahill Rosewood.

The acquisition will not result in any layoffs, Cahill

Rosewood spokesman Ron Iori said. The company plans to spend $6 million to $8 million to upgrade Rosewood facilities, Iori said, including to purchase new beds, along with medical and health care equipment.

Cahill closed on the acquisition in December and it took over management of the Rosewood facilities last week, Iori said.

Cahill Group is led by Mark Yampol, who is a third-generation health care operator.

“The Rosewood brand is very strong, and Rosewood is one of the best managed providers delivering excellent care,” Yampol said in a news release. “These businesses will form the foundation for Cahill’s planned growth in the health care arena.”

The transaction was financed by a combination of equity and loans with Holland & Knight serving as legal counsel.

Stocks dropped Monday as falling oil prices pushed down energy stocks. The prospect of the Federal Reserve further cutting back on its economic stimulus also weighed on the market.

Stocks are falling back this year after exceptional gains pushed the market to record levels in 2013.

Investors’ confidence that the economy was recovering was jolted Friday by a weak employment report that showed far fewer jobs were added in December than economists had forecast.

Unlike last year, investors have so far been reluctant to buy stocks when the market has slumped.

Shares of Beam Inc. rose 24 percent on Monday after it said that it agreed to be purchased by Suntory Holdings Ltd., a Japanese beverage company. The combined company would have annual sales of more than $4.3 billion.

Voters won’t soon forget Rauner’s gaffe If Bruce Rauner manages to successfully back away from his recently unearthed statement from December that he favored reducing the state’s minimum wage by a dollar an hour he will have dodged a very serious political bullet.

According to a CAPITOL EFFECTS new Capitol Fax/ We Ask America Rich poll, the idea is Miller absolutely hated in Illinois. Asked if they would be “more likely or less likely to vote for a gubernatorial candidate who supports lowering the state’s minimum wage to the national rate of $7.25 an hour,” a whopping 79 percent said they’d be less likely. That’s definitely a result that could move actual votes on election day, particularly in the context of the messenger: a hugely wealthy political unknown whose advertising campaign is trying hard to turn him into a “regular guy.”

Women were 84 percent less likely and men were 73 percent less likely to vote for a candidate who wanted to lower the minimum wage by a buck an hour, according to the poll taken Jan. 8 of 1,135 likely voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percent. Democrats were 90 percent less likely, while independents were 77 percent less likely and even Republicans were 63 percent less likely to vote for such a candidate.

As the controversy was building last week, Rauner told a Carbondale audience that if the minimum wage was increased here he would only support it if the state also made “our labor regulations and our tax burden much more attractive to small business.” He added that he could still support lowering the minimum wage “in the context of dramatically improving our schools and creating a business environment where everybody’s got jobs.”

But by Wednesday, Rauner had completely backed away, claiming he was “flippant” when he unequivocally said in a December forum in the Quad Cities that he wanted to roll back the minimum wage to the national level because Illinois’ dollar an hour difference was “hurting our economy.” After a huge firestorm of controversy erupted, Rauner claimed that he could actually support raising the minimum wage, as long as it was coupled with some key legal changes like unspecified workers’ comp and tort reforms.

The Democratic Governors Association attempted to counter Rauner’s spin.

“They say a gaffe is when a politician tells the truth,” said DGA Communications Director Danny Kanner. “In the case of Bruce Rauner, he showed his true colors when he said that Illinois’ minimum wage needs to be cut ... and voters won’t soon forget.”

Slow down in the suburbs ... still Now that we’ve thawed from last week’s deep freeze, Illinois Department of Transportation crews hope to install about 900 new speed limit signs across the state.

Unfortunately, hardly any of those signs will be installed along toll roads in the Chicago area.

You’ll recall that as of Jan. 1, a new law increasing the maximum speed limit on Illinois’ toll roads and interstates to 70 mph went into effect. The delay in posting the signs is because the crews in charge of switching the speed-limit signs were busy with other tasks.

IDOT had 1,755 trucks assigned to snow duty statewide and 3,700 full- and part-time employees were

available to clear roads.

We supported the idea of increasing the speed limit to 70 mph when the law was first discussed early last year. We still support the increase and are disappointed more Chicago area roads will not being seeing an increase in the posted speed limit.

The move is good for business.

It’s helpful for businesses to have truck drivers arrive earlier to their destinations. Plus, 34 states already have speed limits of 70 mph or higher, including neighboring Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Missouri.

Those trucks now will have to slow down when they reach Chicago’s suburbs. Those who drive 70

mph already in the suburbs likely will continue doing so – illegally.

State Rep. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, has vowed to fight IDOT over its decision to keep the speed limit on Chicago-area toll roads at 55 mph. He said it’s clear more than 85 percent of motorists on all expressways are traveling 70 mph or faster.

“It’s unacceptable. They’re putting law-abiding citizens into danger,” Oberweis told the Chicago Tribune.

The faster speed limits mean motorists must maintain a high level of alertness. Enjoy your faster interstates, but be mindful of when and where it is legal to travel 70 mph.

Minooka girls rally to defeat Providence, again

By MARK JOHNSON mjohnson@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – It was déjà vu all over again Monday night for the Minooka and Providence varsity girls basketball teams as the Indians defeated the visiting Celtics, 40-36.

On Dec. 28, Minooka trailed Providence, 29-16, at halftime before rallying to win, 44-43, at the Lincoln-Way East Medieval Classic.

On Monday, the Indians were down 22-15 at halftime, but Brooklyn Bachmann had eight points in the first three minutes of the second half as Minooka more than erased its deficit.

“It was almost a carbon copy of when we played them the first time,” Minooka coach Ray Liberatore said. “I liked the way we obviously put the ball in the basket. Brooklyn hit those 3s. When you fall be-

hind like that, especially at the end of the half, so much, I think, of it is, how does the second half start?”

Back-and-forth play ensued after Bachmann’s second 3-pointer in a 51-second span made the score 26-25 Minooka with 5:17 left in the third quarter.

A Maeve Garvey 3-pointer lifted Providence into a 30-29 lead by the end of the third, but Minooka gained the lead, and kept it, on Erin Heide’s free throws with 3:16 left in the game.

Heide’s were the first of six straight makes for the Indians that, along with Providence missing its last five field-goal attempts, kept them ahead. Minooka’s first free-throw miss of the quarter was part of a controversial stretch that sealed the win.

With three seconds to play, Minooka senior Bethany Bachmann went to the line and missed an attempt.

Although the score-

board only showed nine fouls for Providence, Bachmann was awarded, and made, a second attempt.

As the referees huddled at the scorer’s table, it was determined that Providence had, in fact, committed 10 fouls in the half, and the shot counted.

“I was really nervous when they almost didn’t count it,” Bethany Bachmann said. “Even if I had to shoot it again, and didn’t end up making it, as long as we didn’t let them shoot any [open] shots that they would make, we would be OK.” Providence went 1 for 10 from the field in the fourth quarter and was 4 for 19 for the entire second half.

The Celtics also were out-rebounded, 15-4, in the second half after controlling the board battle, 1713, in the first.

Limiting hosting ReedCuster to 14 points through the first three quarters while creating 21 turnovers in the first 24 minutes of play, the Coalers girls basketball team knocked off the Comets, 46-23, in Interstate Eight Conference action Monday night.

“They have great ball pressure. They really dis-

rupt your point guard and the timing of everything you want to do,” ReedCuster coach Nick Klein said. “They also do a really good job on the back side with help defense. They are real athletic and they get out and defend you. They really force you to have to beat them off the dribble and if you don’t have girls who are going to do that, it’s going to be a long night.

That’s kind of where we were at tonight.”

Emily Halliday led Coal City on offense with 14 points and Nicole Borgetti added 11, but the Coalers seemed out of sync on offense.

“It’s something we focus on because we know if the offense isn’t there that night that we can always depend on our defense,” Borgetti said. “We rely on that – having a good night defensively. That’s what

happened tonight because, really, we didn’t have that strong of a game on offense.”

Coal City led 15-6 at the end of the first quarter, 2610 at halftime and 37-14 after three.The Coalers now have their sights set on the I-8 Tournament that is right around the corner, though they still have time to prepare.

“We had a number of shots that didn’t go and we forced some things early,” Schmitt said. “But we just missed some open shots

and you are going to have that every now and then.

But I think we’ll clean that up and hopefully be ready for the conference tournament.”

Borgetti is confident the team will have a more rounded effort when the league tournament tips.

“I think over the next four days of practice we’ll definitely get to work,” Borgetti said. “It wasn’t our strongest game out there tonight, but I think if we practice hard over the next four days we’ll be ready.”

Raiders have pieces in place to play with anyone VIEWS Dick Goss Lincoln-Way East coach Rich Kolimas has been around basketball for a long time. He knows talent when he sees it.

Except for a bad second quarter, his Griffins did a commendable job in last Friday’s 54-38 loss at Bolingbrook. But he also knows beating the Raiders (10-2, 4-0) will be a tall task for his team or anyone else in the SouthWest Suburban Blue.

Previous Bolingbrook teams have had talent.

This one may have that extra ingredient.

“This team is unselfish,” Kolimas said. “They distribute the ball well.

They’re patient when they need to be, and they still exert pressure.”

A run at a state title, perhaps?

“They have enough parts to handle it,” Kolimas said. “They have good outside shooting, size and size off the bench.”

It’s been a while since dreams of a state championship for an area boys basketball team have been legitimate. Time for that to change.

“Our team goals for this game included shooting 45 percent or better and having 13 or fewer turnovers,” Raiders coach Rob Brost said after the win over East. “We didn’t reach either one. That kind of shows how good we are.”

“They try to slow it down and we like to speed it up,” senior guard Gage Davis said. “That could have affected us some, but we had bad practices this week, and that’s probably the main reason we did not play better.”

This was on a night when the regular rotation was disrupted, affecting the Raiders’ flow. Forward Josh Dillingham, who had started every previous game, and guard Brodric Thomas, a top reserve, were sidelined with knee dings suffered in practice the day before.

“We had Lanphier down 10 in the third quarter and then they blitzed us at the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth,” Brost said.

“Our big guys aren’t quite there yet,” Nixon said. “But if we get them enough touches in the post, they’ll be great.”

Brost noted Williams, Torres and Triplett all had about 15 points in a recent win over Crete-Monee, and all three were in double figures in the victory over Joliet Central.

Blackhawks feel the burn at workout CHICAGO – The first few shots are a piece of frozen cake.

Slap-slap-slap-slap-slap.

After all, we’re talking about the defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks here. You think they’ve never practiced a rapid-fire shooting drill? Please.

Slap-slap-slap-slap-slap.

But now something is happening. Now, the burn is kicking in.

After all, we’re talking about human beings here. You think these guys are robots or something, that they’re immune to muscle fatigue? Please.

Slap-slap-slap-slap-slap.

Yeah, this is starting to hurt a little bit. It feels as if the pucks are gaining weight.

“Your calves are burning, your thighs are burning,” said Hawks forward Kris Versteeg, a seven-year NHL veteran. “But it’s more in your forearms.”

And it’s not finished yet.

The Hawks work on all sorts of drills during practice, but few are as fun to watch as the rapid-fire drill. A player steps into the slot, readies his stick, and fires dozens of shots into

A recent drill included Versteeg, Bryan Bickell, Brandon Saad and Michal Handzus near the end of practice at Johnny’s IceHouse West. Each player stepped forward one at a time, and as he ripped shot after shot, his teammates caught their breath.

Kompon mixed the angle of his Kris Versteeg passes – some good, some bad – because players need to be ready for unpredictability in games, when sticks are swinging and ice chips are flying and opponents are looking to drill you into the seventh row.

When puck meets stick, every moment matters.

“Catch it and hammer it,” said Bickell, a 6-foot-4, 233-pound forward from Ontario. “Believe it or not, the game comes down to seconds. If you wait that extra second, there’s a stick or there’s a guy in the lane that takes away [your shot].

“So if you work on it in practice, it will carry over to the games.”

It’s hard to say exactly when the drill will pay off.

Maybe the rapid-fire moment will arrive Tuesday – this is not a test – during the Hawks’ game against the Colorado Avalanche, a young team with a promising future.

Or maybe a Hawks shooter will accept a pass and fire a shot that could decide the outcome Friday against the Anaheim Ducks or Sunday against the Boston Bruins, two legitimate obstacles to the Hawks’ goal of back-to-back championships.

Hawks coach Joel Quenneville would love to see such a moment.

The Hawks remain atop the Western Conference’s Central Division at 30-8-10, but they had

gone winless in four out of five games before bouncing back Sunday against Edmonton.

“The next three games are all good tests for us,” Quenneville said. “We want to make sure we have a real good homestand here [that] can put us back in a better spot.”

If shooters are in the right spot, the Hawks could be in a better spot.

Versteeg, 27, battled through the burning sensation in his calves, thighs and forearms to vary his rapid-fire practice shots.

In Vikings coach search, Zimmer a favorite

By DAVE CAMPBELL The Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Vikings have moved into the home stretch of their search for a head coach and Cincinnati defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer has emerged as a favorite.

John Wooten, the executive director of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, said in a phone interview Monday that Vikings general manager Rick Spielman told him last week the team’s plan was to contact finalists for the job by Tuesday.

According to an NFL Network report on Saturday,

Zimmer was scheduled to travel to Minnesota on Monday and meet with Vikings officials for a second interview Tuesday.

Zimmer is a Lockport native and is the son of Bill Zimmer, the retired former Lockport High School coach.

The alliance, based in Washington, is designed to promote candidate development for coaching, front office and scouting jobs in the NFL. The FPA’s strategic efforts include advocacy for and marketing of the hiring and promotion of minorities among NFL teams, and one of Wooten’s protégées is Arizona de-

fensive coordinator Todd Bowles, another strong candidate for Minnesota.

Bowles spoke with Spielman in Arizona last week, and Wooten said Spielman told him the interview went well.

“He was thoroughly, thoroughly impressed.

That’s the way I would describe it,” Wooten said.

Wooten said Monday afternoon that he had not yet heard from Spielman about a second interview for Bowles.

The Vikings began the week one of four teams left without a head coach, joining Cleveland, Detroit and Tennessee. The Lions,

according to Wooten’s conversation with general manager Martin Mayhew, were also moving toward a conclusion, with a similar plan to invite finalists to Michigan on Monday or Tuesday for further talks with team brass.

Another candidate working with Wooten is former Indianapolis coach and current Baltimore offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell, who has previously interviewed with the Lions.

“We think that Jim is right in the thick of this thing,” Wooten said.

One of Spielman’s favorite terms is “due diligence.” His public

declaration when the process began was that he wouldn’t let a particular category, circumstance or deadline limit his options for Leslie Frazier’s successor. Spielman, though, said his preference was to make the hire prior to the Senior Bowl, a prime period of draft prospect evaluation for coaching staffs around the league.

Practices for the annual college all-star game in Mobile, Ala., begin next week.

The Vikings aren’t publicizing any information about the search. Zimmer’s agent, David Dunn, didn’t immediately return

messages left on Monday.

They’ve already interviewed, according to various reports: Seattle offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Cleveland defensive coordinator Ray Horton, San Francisco offensive coordinator Greg Roman and San Francisco defensive line coach Jim Tomsula, in addition to Bowles and Zimmer.

With the Seahawks and 49ers playing this Sunday for the NFC championship, the Vikings couldn’t talk to any of those four candidates again until next week.

RB review: Matt Forte was as good as it gets BEARS INSIDER

Hub Arkush Matt Forte was born to play running back in Marc Trestman’s offense and he proved it this past season with the best performance of his career.

Forte carried the ball from scrimmage 289 times, second only to his 316 attempts his rookie year. He also totaled a career – best 1,339 yards and nine touchdowns.

What makes him so perfect for what Trestman wants to do is that Forte also had a career-best 74 receptions for another 594 yards – also a career high – and three more touchdowns.

The 12 scores tie his career best, also established in his 2008 rookie season.

Forte joins LeSean McCoy as a Pro Bowl starter.

Inexplicable backup Michael Bush had arguably his worst season in the NFL. Bush got just 63 carries, a 34 percent decline off his 95 carries in 2012, and he managed just 197 yards for a 3.1 average and three touchdowns.

If you take out Bush’s long run of 40 yards, he averaged just 2.5 yards on his other 62 carries, and he failed repeatedly in third and fourth and short situations.

Compared to the 421 yards and 4.4 average Bush put up in 2012, 2013 was a bust.

Michael Ford, an undrafted rookie free agent,

saw some special teams action but did not get a carry from scrimmage.

Tony Fiammetta was a blocking fullback who didn’t carry the ball from scrimmage but caught four passes for 57 yards and did a nice job clearing paths for Forte.

GRADE: By any measure, Forte deserves an A. But we’re not grading him alone.

The idea here is to rate the Bears running backs and running game, and as good as Forte was, the Bears finished just 16th in the NFL in rushing but were seventh in average yards per carry.

We have to give the running backs/running game a B+, held back only

by Bush’s off year and the lack of a commitment to

running in the gameplan.

CONTRACT SITUATIONS: Forte, Bush, Ford and Fiammetta are all signed through the 2015 season, but salary cap issues loom. Forte’s 2014 cap hit will be $7.5 million and Bush will dent the cap by $3.85 million. Fiammetta is scheduled to make just $745,000 with nothing guaranteed, so he will most likely be back, and Ford is a bottom of the roster guy who will again have to earn a spot in training camp.

Many times, people’s concept of hypnosis comes from stage shows, where volunteers in a trance-like state quack like ducks and reveal their darkest secrets, Gray said. This makes people falsely assume

hypnosis means losing control and shy away from it, she said.

“Nothing can be further from the truth,” Gray said. “You are always in control.”

Gray says people enter a hypnotic state in the moment between full alertness and sleep, which is right at awaken-

ing or just before sleep.

Hypnotism appealed to Gray, always fascinated with the mind-body connection (Gray has studied martial arts for years). So when Gray met a hypnotist 18 months ago through a mutual friend, she underwent her first trance.

She decided to make

it her career and took classes through the American Hypnosis Association, the Hypnosis Motivation Institute, and the Hypnosis Practitioner Training Institute. Gray then practiced on willing subjects under the guidance of master hypnotists, she said.

Individuals must be

willing to be hypnotized or hypnosis will not work, Gray said. That’s true even in the case of stage show volunteers.

Clients never lose awareness of their surroundings at any point during the sessions, she said.

“You’re not in some zombie state,” Gray said.

Masquerade gala to raise money for cancer fight

That’s why everyone who attends the Masquerade Black Tie Gala fundraiser for cancer research Feb. 8 in Joliet will receive a mask, organizer Kristen Koppers said.

Tickets are available for the event, which will run from 7 to 11 p.m. at 176 West Banquet Hall, 1100 NE Frontage Road.

Koppers, an English teacher at Joliet West High School and founder of the school’s Relay for Life cancer awareness club, hopes the gala raises $10,000 for the American Cancer Society.

“A lot of people with cancer are asked, ‘What if you had one more day?’ ” Koppers said. “We’re hoping to raise money so those people can have that one more day.”

There also will be an open bar.

The fight against cancer is personal to Koppers. Her mother, Dianne Biksacky, of Channahon, is a breast cancer survivor. Koppers’ father, John Biksacky, died of pancreatic cancer in 2012, 15 months after his

diagnosis.

“In the last two years since my dad’s death, eight people I know died of cancer,” she said.

Eight years ago, Dianne was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer, which was treated with surgery, two rounds of radiation and chemotherapy, Koppers said. Her father’s only symptom was a stomach ache, which turned out to be colon cancer and Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, she said.

Distance made it easier for Koppers to deal with her mother’s cancer because Dianne was in Florida during her diagnosis and initial treatments, Koppers said.

When her father became sick, Koppers accompanied him to appointments and asked the hard questions.

“For the last two months, my dad was in the hospital and not functional. It was sad to see him that way,” she said. “With further research, we might be able to make life more manageable for those battling cancer.”

This deal has instructive points for both sides. The auction went as given. Note, in particular, East’s pass. Yes, West might have had a three-suiter with a heart void, and a contract of four spades would have either made or been a cheap save when four hearts doubled was making. But it is the percentage action to pass when balanced. It is usually easier to win four tricks than 10. (Yes, here five clubs makes, but how would you get there?)

Since East’s low card denied the spade queen, West anticipated that South had begun with queen-doubleton. So, West could see four probable tricks. However, his partner rated to have one of the minor-suit kings – but which one?

When West cashed the spade king, East made a suit-preference signal. Because he held the diamond king, he dropped his spade eight. (With the club king, East would have followed with his four.)

Now West led a low diamond. East won with his king and shifted to the club jack. The defenders took two tricks there. South, down to eight trumps, ruffed the next play and cashed the heart ace to drop the king and get out for down two.

Did you notice South’s error? He should have played his spade queen at trick one.

Then it would have been dangerous for West to continue with the spade king, lest South ruff, cash the heart ace, get to dummy with the heart queen, and discard two losers on the spade jack and nine.

There were a surprising 11 five-putts on the PGA tour in 2013.

Light therapy can help overcome seasonal affective disorder Dear Doctor K: I have seasonal affective disorder so I dread the approach of winter. What can I do?

Dear Reader: Here in Boston, it can get dark before 4:30 in the afternoon.

For some people, the shorter days of this time of year bring on seasonal affective disorder (SAD), also known as winter depression. People with SAD tend to develop symptoms every year. They start gradually in late autumn and build up during the winter months. For many, relief may not come until the longer days of spring.

Like other forms of depression, SAD produces sadness, lethargy and fatigue, loss of interest in people and activities, impaired concentration and irritability. SAD also leads to oversleeping and overeating. (Most other forms of depression produce insomnia and weight loss.)

Only one drug, bupropion (Wellbutrin), is approved for SAD. But selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and other antidepressants are also effective.

Another treatment, known as light therapy, is at least as effective for treating SAD as antidepressants.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Light therapy involves sitting close to a fluorescent light box for 30 minutes each day. The light is much more intense than the light produced by an ordinary light bulb. Proper light boxes provide 10,000 lux. (The “lux” is a measure of light intensity. By way of comparison, indoor light is about 100 lux. A bright sunny day is 50,000 lux or more.)

Bright white light acts on cells in the eye’s retina. The retina connects to a part of the brain that helps control circadian rhythms of sleep and wakefulness. Scientists believe these rhythms may become disrupted in SAD. Light treatment is relatively safe and side effects are uncommon. Some people become irritable, develop headaches, or their eyes are bothered by the brightness of the light box.

Reducing the time of each light box session, or sitting somewhat farther

away from the box, can often correct that problem.

If light therapy is done in the later part of the day, it can cause insomnia in some people when they go to bed several hours later. The obvious way of dealing with this problem is moving light therapy to earlier in the day.

Some people with SAD have also suffered from bipolar disorder earlier in their lives. There is some evidence that light therapy may provoke recurrent attacks of bipolar disorder, particularly the manic (hyperactive) phase of the illness. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not test, approve or regulate light box devices. Before buying a light box, ask which wavelengths it emits, to avoid any that may be harmful.

Finally, a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a good diet and a strong social network, is also likely to help you cope with SAD.

Man drives after drinking Dr. Wallace: I’m 18, and my boyfriend is 20.

He is kind, considerate, compassionate and just a wonderful human being.

I love him and love to think that someday he will be my husband and the father of our children.

We have been together for over a year.

The only concern I have, and it’s a huge concern, is that he drinks too much. His father is an alcoholic, and I believe my boyfriend is, too.

I’ve done everything I can think of to get him to lay off alcohol, but nothing has been effective. I’ve never seen my boyfriend drunk, but I’ve seen him tipsy many, many times.

To make matters worse, he has been known to drive after he has been drinking. He knows I refuse to ride with him after he has consumed alcohol. I can’t count the number of times I’ve had to call my sister to pick me up because he thought more of alcohol than he did of me.

When I bring up the subject, he either says, “I don’t want to talk about it,” or “I can handle my alcohol. You’ve never seen me drunk, have you?”

The easy way out for me is to tell this guy it’s either alcohol or me, and then walk away when he chooses alcohol – because he would.

But I just can’t do that.

I love and care for him much more than I should.

I’m trying my very best to get him to stop drinking, or at least to stop driving after drinking.

If that happened, then we might have a life together.

I’m going to keep trying to help him until I conclude that he can’t be

If that ever becomes your boyfriend’s wish, he should get involved with Alcoholics Anonymous.

This wonderful organization can assist him in living a sober life.

Since you love this guy, you might find it difficult to remove him from your life. If that’s the case, don’t allow him to convince you that he can “control” his drinking pattern by himself, because he won’t.

Don’t marry him until you are 100 percent positive that he is an alcoholic who has firmly decided to live an “alcohol-free life” forever because he loves you more than he loves alcohol.

Please remember that being married to a “drinking alcoholic” guarantees that your life will be one filled with tears, heartache, sorrow and misery.

At Golden Globes, sloppy gets it done

By HANK STUEVER The Washington Post Sunday night’s Golden Globe Awards show was pretty much everything viewers want the Golden Globes to be – from its humorous informalities down to some of the inexplicable winners (we’ll get to Jacqueline Bisset in a sec) of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s nearly meaningless film and television awards.

Nobody had an acceptance speech ready. Nobody could get to the stage in a timely manner. The red carpet was accidentally soaked before the show in dirty drain water. Men showed up with fancier hairdos than the women. The Breathalyzer results were just north of handcuffable.

This is all we ever really ask for from any awards show – something to look at and laugh off.

Big winners included “American Hustle” (for best comedy or musical film and for actresses Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence); AMC’s “Breaking Bad” (for best TV drama and for lead actor Bryan Cranston); and Fox’s comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (for best TV comedy and lead actor Andy Samberg).

“Twelve Years a Slave” won best film in the drama category; Cate Blanchett won best actress (drama) for her work in “Blue Jasmine”; Matthew McConaughey won best actor (drama) for “Dallas Buyers Club.”

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler delivered even better co-hosting work than they did last year; the great jab of the evening came in their opening monologue when Fey, referring to the astronauts-in-peril movie “Gravity,” said, “George Clooney would rather float away and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age.”

And Poehler (who won her own Golden Globe, for her starring role in NBC’s “Parks and Recreation”) did a hilarious bit as “Randy,” Fey’s “illegitimate son” forced to don a tuxedo and serve alongside Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick’s daughter as “Mr. Golden Globes.”

The evening’s oddest moment came barely 15 minutes in, when Bisset won a best actress award for Starz’s little-noticed broadcast of the British Jazz Age miniseries “Dancing on the Edge.” It was the

At a loss for words, Bisset soon found some, reaching back across decades of apparent show-biz hurt and neglect, to the chagrin of the person at the control board tasked with muting out bad words. (And missed bleeping out the nefarious S-word.)

Bisset’s goofiness seemed to set a tone – say what you want, do what you want – it’s the Golden Globes and nobody really cares and the award choices might not make conventional sense. Tremble and sputter your way through it. Pause.

(Pause again. Pause yet again.) Climb over and past those tightly packed tables to get to the stage.

Make fun of the HFPA in funny, fake foreign accents. Ignore the orchestra cue midway through your incomprehensible acceptance speech and then really ignore the orchestra cue.

Emma Thompson walked out in stocking feet to present the best screenplay award (Spike Jonze won it for “Her”) and pointed to the red-soled bottoms of the Christian Louboutin heels in her hand: “This is my blood,” she faux-complained.

The only place the Golden Globes show ever stumbles (besides those years when the host bombs) is when some of its participants and recipients attempt to mo-

mentarily steer it in a serious direction, confusing it with fancier events: Steve Coogan brought the real “Philomena” onstage to briefly remind us of the Irish women who were forced to give up their children for adoption; U2’s Bono accepted the award for best original song (from the movie “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”) and hectored us about still not having seen it.

One of the night’s more memorable moments was serious and touching, as Diane Keaton accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her lifelong (and awards-show averse) friend Woody Allen. She took the opportunity to salute how he writes characters for women. “Woody’s women [characters] can’t be compartmentalized,” she said. “They are in fact the hallmark of Woody’s work, but what’s even more remarkable is absolutely nothing links these unforgettable characters — except the fact that they came from Woody’s mind. And there you have it.”

Which is about all the genuine sentimentality a decent Golden Globes telecast can bear.

Soon enough, the Golden Globe Awards show did something it does every year, something I love most in any awards show: It not only ended on time; it also ended one minute early. When it comes to Golden Globes, sloppy gets it done.
