Police seek info on Joliet’s first homicide of the year

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police said the vehicle involved in Michael C. Brock’s death was found before his body.

At 6:45 a.m. Saturday, police were called about a yellow 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo parked in the 600 block of Kiep Avenue.

“It was parked suspiciously and had front-end damage.

Since there were no hit-andruns or stolen vehicles reported at that time, officers initially waited to see if the driver came back,” Joliet Deputy Chief Al Roechner said.

But shortly after 8 a.m., a passer-by found Brock’s body in the alley behind the 500 block of South Ottawa Street.

“The cause of death was a [single] gunshot wound.”

It was located near the intersection of Jasper and Ottawa streets – about a half-mile from Kiep Avenue.

Roechner said the damage on the Monte Carlo matched debris found near Brock’s body.

A deputy coroner pronounced Brock, 24, dead at the scene at 11:45 a.m., but discovered additional injuries so an autopsy was performed Saturday afternoon.

“The cause of death was a

[single] gunshot wound,” Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said.

Roechner and O’Neil said the evidence examined to this point cannot determine if Brock was struck by the car before or after he was shot.

Roechner said police have identified the owner of the Monte Carlo.

“Finding them has been a top priority [of the investigation], but we haven’t been able to make contact,” Roechner said Monday afternoon.

At the time of his death, Brock was on probation after pleading guilty to drug possession charges in 2013.

Man beaten outside courthouse

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Three men were arrested Monday morning after police said they jumped a man outside the Will County Courthouse.

The 22-year-old victim was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to Will County Sheriff’s police. The attack happened after a pretrial hearing for Christopher Stamps, 16, who is charged with murder for allegedly shooting Latray Wright, also 16, on Oct. 23.

“The [victim] and the three rival gang members had all been in the courthouse,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said. The victim had just walked out the courthouse doors when he was beaten by Christian M. Blackwell, 23, Makhi T. Jones, 20, and Martell K. Jones, 26, according to Hoffmeyer.

Deputies arrested the three suspects at the scene, Hoffmeyer said.

Blackwell, Makhi Jones and Martell Jones all are on parole.

They were charged with three counts of aggravated battery and one count of mob action

and booked into the Will County jail. All three are being held on $1 million bond each.

According to Christian M. sheriff’s reports, Blackwell Blackwell is on parole for robbery, Martell Jones for delivery of drugs and Makhi Jones for unauthorized possession of a Makhi T. firearm.

Jones Stamps appeared Monday before Judge Dave Carlson.

Defense attorney Cosmo Tedone asked the judge for time Martell K. to review a disc Jones turned over by the Will County State’s Attorney’s office that contains pages and postings taken from Facebook. Investigators said online insults from one faction of a street gang to another led to Wright’s slaying.

“You understand the motion your attorney is making will

delay your right to a speedy trial,” Carlson asked the teen.

“All right,” Stamps replied – the only statement he made during his appearance.

Wright, a sophomore at Joliet West High School, and a friend were walking near Princeton and Fairmont avenues in Lockport Township when they were ambushed by the occupants of a blue car, according to investigators.

Wright turned to run, but was struck and killed. His friend was not injured. Stamps was identified as one of three people inside the car and arrested three days later, police said.

When Stamps was brought to court last week, a shouting match that involved several people erupted in the hallway.

Carlson mentioned the incident Monday while addressing the courtroom audience before the battery that occurred outside.

“This court will not tolerate less than respectful behavior, whether it involves the defendant’s family or the alleged victim’s,” Carlson said. “The court will not stand by idly and people [who cannot behave] will be held in contempt.”

The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday will not affect Waste Management’s schedule, according to a news release from the city of Joliet.

In observance of the holiday, City Hall will be closed Monday. The parking decks will be free of charge, and there will be no enforcement of the parking meters.

Rauner moves to immediately freeze all nonessential spending

Local lawmakers agreed with Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s move Monday to quickly address Illinois’ budget mess, taking the oath of office and then ordering state agencies to immediately freeze all non-essential spending.

“[Rauner] definitely laid out and made it very clear what he wanted to do,” said Mark Batinick, a Plainfield Republican who will be sworn in as state representative Wednesday. Batinick noted Rauner’s emphasis on stopping business migration to neighboring states in his inauguration speech in Springfield on Monday.

But, like others, state Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, hopes the governor sticks to his statements about improving Illinois’ business climate and finances.

“Words are easy. Now it’s time for action – for the two parties to come together,” she said.

Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, criticized Rauner’s focus on struggling businesses and retaining jobs, rather than cash-

strapped social service agencies and families struggling with mental health, low wages and high college costs.

During his speech, Rauner spoke of a Wheeling company he visited last year, saying it’s a perfect example of difficulties faced by Illinois businesses.

“Perhaps this is the difference between a Democrat and Republican,” McGuire said. “Candidates often use vignettes in their speech. His vignette was about a struggling business. I appreciate the need to attract and retain jobs, but I also know there’s a lot of Illinois families who are struggling.”

State Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, said she liked Rauner’s pledge to work with Democrats, who hold veto-proof majorities in the Illinois House and Senate. She said she liked that he said the state’s financial crisis has been building for decades and that both parties are to blame.

Joliet area has connections in Rauner administration

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Two people headed for Springfield as part of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration have local connections.

Philip Nelson, a Seneca farmer and graduate from the agriculture program at Joliet Junior College, is reported to be Rauner’s choice to head the Department of Agriculture, although he has not been announced.

Rauner announced over the weekend that Joliet native Michael Mahoney will be his policy adviser for revenue and

pensions. Mahoney is a 2003 graduate of Joliet Catholic Academy and the son of Joliet attorney George F. Mahoney III.

JJC grad familiar with farmers

The Illinois Farm Bureau announced Monday that Nelson, who was the bureau’s president from 2003 to 2013, will become agriculture director next week.

Nelson is a 1978 graduate of Joliet Junior College. In 2012, he received JJC’s Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award. There is a scholarship

in his name at JJC, which is the Philip Nelson Agriculture Leadership Scholarship.

He also is well known among local farmers, said Mark Schneidewind, manager of the Will County Farm Bureau.

“We’ve had an affiliation with Phil for over 30 years,” Schneidewind said.

In addition to his days at JJC, Nelson was a member of a Young Farmers Committee that included many Will County farmers, Schneidewind said. He has been to Will County to speak to local farmers on many occasions.

Mahoney has worked on fiscal issues

Rauner’s announcement of Mahoney’s appointment noted that he was deputy research director for the Illinois House Republicans, where he focused on personnel, pension and fiscal issues.

“It’s really an exciting opportunity for him,” said his father, George. “The huge issues in the state are areas that he’s working on. It’s a challenge.”

George Mahoney is a law partner with outgoing state Rep. Tom Cross, R-Oswego,

who lost a close election for state treasurer in November.

The younger Mahoney was Cross’ campaign spokesman.

The elder Mahoney is a Democrat. But his son, George said, “is a Republican and has been all his life. His mother [the late Doreen Mahoney] was very Republican.

He learned well from her.”

Last week, Rauner named Leslie Munger, a 1974 graduate of Joliet West High School who now lives in the northwest suburbs, as comptroller to fill the vacancy created by the death of Judy Baar Topinka.

New director of IDOT no fan of Illiana

Could new Gov. Bruce Rauner’s choice of Randy Blankenhorn as head of the Illinois Department of Transportation be a signal of his intentions for the Illiana Expressway?

Some Illiana supporters, including Will County Executive Larry Walsh, are concerned about the changeover in administration. Others don’t see it that way.

For the last eight years, Blankenhorn has served as executive director of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency John f o r P l a n n i n g Greuling – a key regional planning agency that has opposed the Illiana project in the past.

Blankenhorn and his Larry staff in 2013 rec- Walsh ommended not moving forward with the $1.5 billion tollway project. CMAP released an analysis estimating that toll revenues would fall short, leaving taxpayers on the hook for $440 million to $1.1 billion during a 35-year period.

“It doesn’t give me a lot of optimism that the Illiana is on his bucket list of things to do,” Walsh said. “With every new administration comes new players, and new ideas and new directions. Right or wrong, we have to accept that.”

Rauner hasn’t clearly stated where he stands.

Greuling said CMAP staff last year initially recommended not moving forward with the Illiana, but its policy committee later voted to include the project in a long-range regional transportation plan.

But Blankenhorn opposed the Illiana project, according to various media reports, arguing the tollway would be under-utilized by truckers because it would add miles to their trips and force them to pay a toll.

Greuling said it’s likely Rauner’s new administration is taking a step back on all projects – not just the Illiana.

“The reality is he’s inherited a basket-full of money problems with the rollback of the income tax and the increasing deficits and pension payments,” Greuling said. “Everything is going to be under scrutiny.”

Will County Board Member Judy O’Galla, an outspoken Illiana opponent, said she thinks it makes sense for Rauner, and Blankenhorn, to review all major projects’ financial impact on the state’s budget.

“I’m hopeful with the new administration,” O’Galla said.

Rauner announced Blankenhorn’s appointment Sunday. According to a news release, this would be a return to IDOT for Blankenhorn. He worked for the state agency for 22 years, most recently as the Bureau Chief of Urban Program Planning.

Blankenhorn was the point person on two other major infrastructure projects in Will County – the extension of Interstate 355 and the South Suburban Airport.

Blankenhorn was unavailable for comment Monday.

‘Day On’ and other events slated for MLK Jr. Day

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Civil Rights Movement will be celebrated with a day of service in Joliet on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The Community Services Council of Will County is hosting the 26th anniversary of the federal holiday Monday with “Day On, Not A Day Off,” a day of service in which more than 450 volunteers are expected to take on numerous service projects throughout the county.

The day of service has been celebrating the ideals of Martin Luther King Jr. for the past 10 years, program chairman Dale Evans said.

“We started in a small church that I attended,” Evans said. “It has grown exponentially since. Last year we were at the Joliet West High School cafeteria. This year we’ll probably have to move to the field house.”

Nonprofit organizations were asked to submit threehour projects by Jan. 5 to the United Way of Will County, which compiled the projects and sent them to program staff.

The event starts at 7:30 a.m. at Joliet West High School, 401 N. Larkin Ave. in Joliet, for volunteer registration until 8:30 a.m. The program presentation launches at 8:30 a.m. and volunteers complete their projects between 9 a.m. and noon.

From noon to 1 p.m. volunteers recap their projects and head to lunch.

Evans said 489 volunteers signed up last year for the day of service to complete projects such as removing wreaths from graves at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, creating crafts at local organizations and cleaning.

up their children and spouses this year.

“I’ve definitely noticed there are more families,” she said, adding that volunteers can sign up before Monday or on the day during volunteer registration.

Evans said he hopes the event reminds people of King’s message of tolerance in light of the recent civil rights issues, including the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, and protests in New York City.

“When we’re at the room in this event, we’re not all African-Americans, Caucasians or Latinos,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to refocus on the message Dr. King had of unity, through our service.”

Council, said it was personally rewarding to participate in the service projects.

“People can come in the morning, have a doughnut or cup of coffee and get sent out to do some great work for the day,” May said.

In addition to the day of service, a Community Unity Jazz Brunch will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center’s banquet hall at 333 Madison St. in Joliet.

University of St. Francis will hold an event commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day, “Continuing the Journey,” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Moser Performing Arts Center at the university.

Registration date set for Homer Glen primary The HERALD–NEWS HOMER GLEN – Those not registered to vote who would like to cast a ballot in the Homer Glen Feb. 24 primary need to register by Jan. 27, according to Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots.

The County Clerk’s Office,

302 N. Chicago St. in Joliet, is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, according to a news release from Schultz Voots’ office.

Two forms of identification are necessary. One must show current name and address. The second identification can be name only.

Anyone unsure about the status of their registration may visit www.thewillcountyclerk.com and click on Voter Lookup under the What’s New section to verify, or call 815740-4620.

Those who have moved within Will County can complete the back portion of their

voter’s card and return it to the county clerk’s office. Email the change to voterregistration@ willcountyillinois.com by Jan. 27 or visit ova.elections.il.gov.

Grace period voting will be an option from Jan. 28 through Feb. 21 at the Will County Clerk’s Office, which will require a resident to vote on the

same day a person registers.

An absentee ballot can be requested online by clicking on the “Vote by Mail” Quick Link.

The first day to mail out ballots is Thursday. Early voting is Feb. 9-21 at the Will County Clerk’s Office, Homer Township Office and the Village of Homer Glen.

Woman arrested after Joliet apartment fire

Police and firefighters were called about 3 p.m. to find Strong’s second-floor apartment in the 700 block of Hickory Street engulfed in flames. Residents were evacuated and no one was injured.

After being released from the hospital Saturday afternoon, she was booked into the Will County jail on a charge of aggravated arson.

JOLIET – Police said a man came home Sunday night to see another man walking out of his apartment carrying his stereo.

Illinois has billions in unpaid bills and the worst credit rating of any state. Its public pension system has an unfunded liability of $111 billion, and a new law aimed at eliminating the debt is on hold because of a challenge before the Illinois Supreme Court.

Rauner said Monday he’s also ordering a review of all state contracts issued since Nov. 1 and cutting his own salary to $1. As he promised during the campaign, he’s declining all benefits, including a pension.

He said he also plans to ask the Democratic-controlled legislature during the coming weeks to work with him on a jobs and economic package aimed at putting people back to work.

“The governor was very straightforward about how he’s going to do things differently.”

“We weren’t sure if he was going to get right to work and he did. He went right to work and he put everyone on notice that we’re going to get down to business,” she said.

“That we’re going to solve the state’s problems.”

In a statement, Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, connected with Rauner’s message of overtaxed families and businesses.

“I share the governor’s commitment to turning Illinois around and restoring our competitiveness in the jobs market,” Anthony wrote.

“After 12 years of one-party rule, Illinois voters have chosen a new direction that requires bipartisanship to get things done.”

Rauner, a private equity investor, is the first Republican to lead the state since George Ryan left office in 2003.

JOLIET – A fireplace fire damaged a Joliet home Sunday.

Battalion Chief Laroy Aldridge said the blaze was reported at 3:53 p.m. in the 1200 block of Brentwood Place. No one was

injured.

MORRIS – A 3-year-old boy was taken Sunday to Morris Hospital after a sledding accident south of Morris.

Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District Chief Tracey Steffes said a call came in at 1:39 p.m. Sunday that a child was involved in a sledding accident and the parents were en route to the hospital.

The fire department met the parents at the corner of

Dupont Road and Illinois 47, where the child was transferred to an ambulance to be taken the rest of the way to the emergency room.

Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan said the parents called 911 and reported their child hit a tree and was unconscious and that they were going to begin transport to the hospital.

A friend of the family said Monday the child was airlifted to Loyola Medical Center, where he remains in the intensive care unit.

Toddler taken to hospital after sledding accident

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Village trustees said a development plan for a residential property in west Plainfield was moving forward, but it still was too crowded with units for the village to consider.

Village trustees told investors of a 10-year-old undeveloped residential project that they liked a plan to turn duplexes into single-family homes.

However, the four board members in attendance were generally against the proposed lot sizes and density of the development. Mayor Michael Collins and Trustee Margie Bonuchi weren’t present.

Representatives for TMJ Investments LLC came to the Village Board at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting asking for direction on how they should approach the southern portion of the Vista Pointe property just east of Ridge Road north and south of Walker Road.

The Vista Pointe was annexed into the village into 2005 by previous developers

Wiseman-Hughes Enterprises Inc. The original concept plan called for 1,241 residential units over 416 acres, including 300 single-family homes, 425 townhomes and 516 active adult duplex and townhome units.

In 2008, a final development plan approved 297 single-family homes and 420 townhomes for the property north of Walker Road. The lot sizes for the homes were between 10,000 and 12,000 square feet. But the property south of Walker Road weren’t included in that plan.

TMJ representatives wanted to gauge the board’s interest in turning 216 duplex and 299 townhome units into 214 single-family and 271 townhome units, lowering the density from 4.51 to 4.25 units an acre.

They also proposed lot sizes of 6,820 square feet, which is “substantially below the village’s minimum lot size of 12,000 square feet,” according to a staff report “I’m totally against this concept what with lot sizes,” Trustee Jim Racich said, adding that the village is in a much better financial position to be more particular in housing design

But TMJ representative Tom Small said the investment group is only looking for direction, adding that it would require a builder to comply with village design standards and present home designs for trustees to review before starting construction.

“We understand what the board and village wants.

This is somewhat unique,” said TMJ representative Tom Small, explaining that he was proposing a very preliminary version similar to what was approved with the Kombol property in April.

Village Planner Michael Garrigan said the village might be able to adjust the equalize the density between the northern part of Vista Pointe to construct homes that were a higher square footage on the southern portion of the property.

Trustees said that might work, but they still will not vote for any homes near 6,000 square feet.

Trustees also denied a facade grant for 24103 W. Lockport St., and heard a mid-year budget streets division report.

Mokena OKS demolition of building

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com MOKENA – Mokena village officials plan to demolish a building at a site that will serve their long-term plan for downtown development.

At Monday’s board meeting, village trustees unanimously voted to approve contracts for asbestos removal and demolition of the former Therafin building at 19747 Wolf Road.

Village officials bought the building in December for $795,000 because the building was dilapidated, lacked tenant activity and its industrial zoning was not conducive to future development in the village’s downtown area.

The plan is to demolish the 22,000-square foot building and make the property site developable for future businesses.

Mokena-based NES Inc. will handle asbestos removal for $16,000. Asbestos-containing material in the building was identified by the village’s consultant, Hygieneering Inc. Once asbestos removal is complete, the building will then be demolished by Bechstein Construction Corp. for $107,000. Village officials said the demolition will occur in March.

Village trustee Donald Labriola said he thought Mokena made a good and important decision buying and redeveloping a building that will help facilitate new downtown development.

“I think we’re moving in the right direction here, and time will demonstrate if it’s going to be a good move,” Labriola said.

Village trustees also unanimously approved a professional services agreement with St. Charles-based Graf Tree Car Inc. to continue running the Emerald Ash Borer program for this year.

OBITUARIES GERALD R. HERBST Gerald “Jerry” R. Herbst, age 80, passed away suddenly at his home on Tuesday, January 6, 2015.

Jerry was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He is cherished deeply by his family and friends. He was blessed with the gift of life with a liver transplant that he received on February 6, 1992 from his donor, Diane at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Organ donation was very important to Jerry and the entire family supports organ donation. Jerry and Jean advocated organ donation by speaking at the Illinois Driver’s License Bureau, libraries and other events.

Born in Joliet, Jerry was a lifelong resident. A graduate of St. John Grade School, Joliet Catholic High School Class of 1952 and received his Masters Degree in Business from National Lewis University.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1956-58 and retired from Sherwin Williams in 1994 after 42 years.

Jerry was an active member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Crest Hill. He loved the game of golf, he took pride in the appearance of his house and yard. Truly a man of integrity and honor.

Preceded by his parents, Aloyis and Marie (Welter) Herbst; brother, Robert Herbst (1929); and numerous aunts and uncles.

Survived by his loving wife, Jean (Juricic) Herbst of Joliet, with whom he celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on November 13, 2014; three children, Fr. Robert Herbst, OFM Conv of Oakland, CA, Rita (Herbst) Bottomley of Joliet and Renee Herbst of Shorewood; one grandchild, Elaine Bottomley of Joliet; his sister-in-law, Joyce (late Richard) Korst of Joliet; his aunt Cel Welter of Texas; as well as numerous cousins.

Born: April 27, 1955; in Chicago, IL Died: Jan. 10, 2015; in Hines, IL Melody Ann Jonasen, age 59, of Minooka and formerly of the Berwyn and Cicero area, passed away Saturday, January 10, 2015, at the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital in Hines, Illinois.

Born April 27, 1955, in Chicago, Melody is a daughter of Laverne Messina (nee Matthews) of Countryside and the late Gennaro Messina, Sr. She was raised and educated in Chicago and Cicero, and went on to later earn her nursing degree. Melody honorably served in the United States Army and was employed as a nurse at Manor Care in Oak Lawn. She was a member of Living Stones Community Church in Channahon and will be remembered for her love of shopping and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her mother, Laverne; husband, Kevin, whom she married May 3, 2013; children, Stephanie (Joseph) Kaczmarek of Plainfield, Steven (Lucia) Roden of Berwyn, Shawn Roden (Marie Lukes) of Montgomery, Scott (Joshua) Eremia-Roden of North Carolina, Shane Roden of Cicero and Sara Roden of Japan; grandchildren, Chanel and Chloe Kaczmarek, Shawn Stotler, and Geanni and Natalia Roden, with another expected; her Goddaughter, Christine Schwerin; and siblings, Gennaro, Jr. (Norma) Messina of Arizona, Laura (Vincent) Schwerin of Stickney,

Cheryl (Richard) Karas of Berwyn, and Anthony (Amy) Messina and Frank (Michele) Messina both of Chicago; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Lawrence E. Morrissey, age 78, passed away at home on the morning of January 8, 2015, after a brief, but courageous, battle with an aggressive cancer discovered last fall. He was a loving husband to his wife of 48 years, Kathleen (nee Landreman).

Journalist Wallace 15 Westfeldt dies at age 91 The ASSOCIATED PRESS PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Wallace O. Westfeldt, whose half-century journalism career started in print and led to network and public broadcasting, died Sunday at the age of 91.

His first newspaper job was as a reporter at the Nashville Tennessean during a time it was at the forefront covering desegregation. He worked alongside David Halberstam, Tom Wicker and John Seigenthaler and was assigned to cover the landmark U.S. Supreme Court school segregation case, Brown v. Board of Education.

Westfeldt left in 1960 to work on the documentary series “NBC White Paper” and then the news program “The Huntley-Brinkley Report” in 1963. He became the program’s executive produc-

er and oversaw NBC’s coverage of the Vietnam War, producing the first live, onehour satellite reports from overseas.

In 1971, Westfeldt launched the NBC Nightly News with John Chancellor and later was executive producer of “NBC Reports.”

He left NBC in 1976 for a job as executive producer of the PBS weekly series “USA: People & Politics” and then to ABC News to work on the investigative unit ABC Special Reports.

Returning to NBC in 1979, he worked on the program “Prime Time Sunday” and retired from the network in 1982.

Westfeldt began a long association in 1987 with interviewer David Frost.

His awards included four Emmys, a Peabody and an American Bar Association Silver Gavel Award.

William F McDermott, age 60, passed away Sunday, January 11, 2015, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center.

Survived by his wife, Pamela (Henry) McDermott; son, Jason McDermott; grandchildren, Hannah, Jace, and Max McDermott; one brother, Larry F. (Barbara) Duffy; grandfather, Fred Koenig; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents, William and Maxine McDermott; one brother, Patrick McDermott; and his grandmother, Letetia Koenig.

Born in Joliet, a longtime resident. He enjoyed working on model cars.

Born July 19, 1936, in Joliet, Illinois, he was raised by his mother after the sudden loss of his father just days before Christmas in 1944.

A graduate of St. Raymond Elementary School, Joliet Catholic High School, the University of Illinois and The John Marshall Law School, he worked jobs to pay his tuition the entire way. He served in the Marine Corps. He began his legal career in 1964 as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of Illinois and, in 1967, was appointed Chief of the Organized Crime and Racketeering section for the Northern District of Illinois.

In 1969, he received a meritorious service award from United States Attorney General, Ramsey Clark, who credited him with helping disband the Chicago crime syndicate. In 1974, he opened his own practice in downtown Chicago while at the same time working at O`Brien, Garrison, Berard & Kusta, a Joliet law firm that he credited for the development of his civil litigation skills. Although he represented defendants in numerous high profile government probes and scandals, his real passion was providing representation to the less fortunate, often on a pro bono basis. He took great pleasure in helping people from all walks of life.

Quinn leaves medical marijuana decisions to Rauner

CHICAGO – Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner inherited the prickly question of who should get medical marijuana business permits Monday as his predecessor left office without acting on the matter.

In his last hours as governor, Democrat Pat Quinn announced his administration would not issue licenses to get the state’s marijuana industry off the ground, although he enacted penalties for violations if and when it does.

Quinn’s last-minute bill signing also cleared the way for FBI background checks, a snag holding up national screening of business applicants.

Rauner, a Republican businessman from Winnetka who took office Monday, now must grapple with launching a complicated but potentially revenue-generating industry.

During the campaign, Rauner had criticized the business selection process and suggested auctioning the licenses to the highest qualified bidders.

SPRINGFIELD – In his final moments as Illinois governor, Pat Quinn commuted the sentences of six people, signed a batch of bills and handed out some prestigious appointments, his administration announced Monday during the inauguration festivities of Gov. Bruce Rauner.

The commutations, in a list of 43 granted clemency petitions, included cutting or reducing prison time in six higher-profile cases, some held up in the courts for years. Quinn fully

Attorneys for Hood, a Menard Correctional Center inmate, maintain evidence pointed to someone else and said the commutation gave him a chance to clear his name. Cook County prosecutors have re-examined the case.

“It gives an opportunity to live his life with his friends and family and loved ones,” said Gayle Horn of the University of Chicago’s Exoneration Project.

Ridesharing bill signed by Quinn before leaving office

SPRINGFIELD – Departing Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has signed legislation regulating drivers in the ridesharing industry.

The Democrat issued a news release Monday as inauguration ceremonies were underway in Springfield for Republican Gov.elect Bruce Rauner.

The plan Quinn approved creates statewide regulations for drivers working for ridesharing services that connect passengers with drivers who use their own personal vehicles to give rides. It includes modified insurance requirements, background checks and a zero-tolerance policy on drugs and alcohol.

Quinn had vetoed earlier ridesharing legislation.

Contractor pleads guilty to stealing air base equipment

CHICAGO – A defense contractor from suburban Chicago has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $300,000 in laptops, cellphones and other communications equipment from a U.S. air force base in Afghanistan, then selling much of it online.

Timothy Maurer, 51, of Naperville pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to theft of government property. He faces a maximum 10-year prison sentence.

Sentencing is set for April 7.

A prosecutor said Maurer stole more than 150 items starting in 2013 at the Shindand Air Base where the 445th Air Expeditionary Advisory Squadron operated.

Maurer was employed by Raytheon Corp. and worked as a base systems administrator. At-

torney Jeff King said there’s no allegation his client accessed sensitive information.

NAPERVILLE – The DuPage Children’s Museum is closing temporarily to repair significant water damage from flooding.

Museum officials said they hope to access, repair and clean up the damage as quickly and efficiently as possible. The museum plans to post more information about the closure to its website and social media accounts. It asks visitors to continue checking back for updates.

By JULIE PACE The Associated Press WASHINGTON – In a rare admission of error, the White House said Monday that President Barack Obama or another high-level representative should have joined dozens of world leaders at an anti-terror rally in Paris.

While leaders from Europe, the Middle East and Africa linked arms for Sunday’s march through the boulevards of Paris, the United States was represented by its ambassador to France. Attorney General Eric Holder was in Paris for security meetings but did not attend the march.

“It’s fair to say we should have sent someone with a higher profile,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said. The administration also announced that Secretary of State John Kerry, who was on a long-planned trip to India Sunday, will visit France later this week.

The White House appeared to have been caught

off guard by both the scope of international representation at the rally and by the criticism of the decision to send only Ambassador Jane Hartley. Monday’s admission of error seemed aimed at blunting criticism that the decision was tone-deaf or disrespectful of the longstanding U.S. alliance with France.

France has been on edge following the attacks that left 17 people dead and heightened fears about the spread of terrorism in the West. Three of the gunmen, who claimed allegiance to Islamic extremist groups, were killed by police, although French authorities said Monday that as many as six terror cell members might still be at large.

Before the White House acknowledged its misstep, Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio said the administration had made a mistake by not at least sending Holder or Kerry to attend the Sunday rally. And Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said it was an example of Obama’s team keeping

allies at a distance.

“Where was the president? Where was the vice president? Where was the secretary of state? Where was the attorney general, who had been there moments before, but chose to get on a plane and fly back home?”

Cruz asked Monday during a speech at the conservative Heritage Foundation.

Some Obama administration officials, too, privately expressed frustration that a high-level U.S. representative did not participate in the march. Earnest said the White House took the blame but said Obama himself was not personally involved in the decision. Earnest would not say who was responsible for deciding the administration’s participation in the event.

The fallout from the weekend rally underscored the degree to which the Obama White House has sometimes struggled with the potential importance of symbolic gestures.

I am deeply saddened by the way that my father-in-law, Ed Czerkies, is being portrayed by people in the general public. My father-in-law is not a heartless, selfish, egotistical, self-centered man.

He has donated money to many organizations with no thought to having his name out there for everyone to see. As long as I have known him, I have always known him to be a generous man with a big heart who only wants to invest in the community he has grown up in. He is a Joliet man, has been all his life. He was born there, attended school there, and raised three wonderful sons there with his wife, Carolyn. He loves Joliet, he embraces his community and wants to do good works for the community. This is why he donated to the Rialto Square Theatre.

To clarify again and remind the public, my father-in-law was approached by the Rialto with an opportunity to donate to a new marquee. Initially, the Rialto wanted to put his name on there. He did not want that but felt that if they were going to be putting an “in memory of” on the sign, he would rather have his parents’ names on there as a way to honor them while giving back to the community of Joliet. These were not his “demands” but offered by the Rialto. Upon agreement between the Rialto and my father-in-law, he provide them with the funds and signed the agreement.

To those who continue to vilify my father-in-law, remember that there is a human being behind all of this who was just trying to do good for his community – to invest in the future of the community he has grown up, lives in and has grown a successful business in from the ground up. He does these things to honor his own family but also to try to make a better place for the people of Joliet.

I sincerely ask that those of you in the public who continue to act in such a way and make such negative statements about my father-in-law, think before you speak. Think about how you would feel if someone was saying such things about a man you know and love and about your family.

You do not know him, you do not know what is in his heart, what his intentions are in anything that he does. He and his boys are good people, good family men. They do not deserve any of the personal negative comments that have been stated in several forums.

Interesting times ahead in Illinois politics We likely received an early lesson last week in how the upcoming spring state legislative session will play itself out with new Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and a Democratic General Assembly.

The Democrats jammed through their plan to limit the term of incoming GOP Comptroller Leslie Munger to two years, with a special election in the presidential year of 2016. Rauner appointed Munger to replace Judy Baar Topinka, who passed away last month.

Rauner remained silent in the days leading up to the special legislative session, but the House and Senate Republicans went ballistic.

The Republicans accused the Democrats of needlessly firing a partisan shot before the new Republican governor even was sworn in. They nit-picked every possible angle, from the legislation’s constitutionality to the legality of the special session itself, all the way down to the germaneness of the “vehicle bill” the Democrats used to transport their amendment to the governor’s desk.

At one point, House Republican Leader Jim Durkin all but called House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie a liar for claiming that the legislation had nothing to do with a Democratic attempt to pick up the seat in a presidential year,

Republican state Rep. Dennis Reboletti called the bill “political thievery,” while GOP Rep. Dwight Kay asked Leader Currie, “You really don’t like Gov. Rauner don’t you?

More than two hours after adjournment, Rauner’s office released a statement calling the Democratic proposal a “Constitutionally-dubious election bill” but downplayed the dispute by claiming Rauner “remains committed to working with members of both political parties to pass ‘Judy’s Amendment’ and finally merge the Comptroller and Treasurer offices, which would be a true victory for taxpayers.”

On the merits, the Republicans do have at least one valid point.

Whatever you believe about the need for a special election, there is no doubt that Comptroller Munger will have a tough time retaining her post in two years, when Democratic Illinois native Hillary Clinton likely will be on the presidential ballot.

Many of the Republicans’ other arguments were just plain silly, but

what they showed us is a willingness to play the attack dog on behalf of their party’s new governor, while allowing Rauner to remain mainly on the high road. Last week’s vote also helped Durkin and Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno to begin the process of rallying their members around their new governor and serving notice to the Democrats that a new day is coming.

So while they lost the vote, they actually won. And besides, Illinois voters aren’t really all that worked up about this issue anyway. While they favor a four-year term for the next comptroller rather than a twoyear term and a special election, it’s not by an overwhelming margin, according to pollster We Ask America.

This special election vote was the Democrats’ last hurrah as the complete majority power. They took advantage of an opportunity to possibly pick up a statewide office while they still had a Democratic governor around to sign the bill into law, even though their plan isn’t firmly backed by Illinoisans.

I hope they enjoyed their fun, because those days are now over – at least for four years. We’re in for some interesting times, campers.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Although his girls basketball team trailed Providence Catholic by nine points late in the third quarter of Monday’s nonconference game, Minooka coach Ray Liberatore felt his squad could stage a late comeback and claim a big win.

One of the reasons for his optimism was the play of junior forward Sydney Arlis.

She hit a big 3-pointer to tie the score midway through the final quarter and then two free throws with less than a minute left in regulation.

Then she scored all 10 of her team’s points in overtime as the Indians rallied to claim a 59-55 victory.

Arlis finished with a gamehigh 25 points and seven rebounds. She scored 20 in the second half and in the overtime session.

“Our girls feed off of Syd Arlis, and you could see at the end of the game how she took over,” Liberatore said. “She just stays calm and doesn’t get excited, so she was making plays and hitting her free throws. I thought down the stretch that she was the difference.

“I have all of the respect in the world for Providence’s program, and they play a tougher schedule than we do.

So to come back and get a nice win like we did tonight is a big statement for what our girls are capable of doing. We try to play teams like Providence, since that’s the caliber of team that you’re going to have to beat come playoff time.”

Minooka (12-5) trailed, 3930, late in the third and was down, 43-37, heading into the last quarter.

Brooklyn Bachmann scored 10 of her 12 points in the final half while Kelly Carnagio (10 rebounds) added six of her 15 points after the break.

Providence (13-8) forced the overtime when Madeline Culligan (10 points, nine rebounds) hit two free throws with 18 seconds left to create a 49-all tie.

“All of our team played great, and we were patient enough to give everyone a chance to put points on the board. I was happy that we battled back and got such great stops on defense to give us the opportunity that we weren’t trailing at the end. This is a huge confidence boost for us

and it should carry us into games with Plainfield Central and Oswego.”

The Celtics used a 7-0 start to help them to a 15-8 lead after one quarter.

After Minooka used a 13-1 run to go up, 21-18, Providence closed the half with a 9-2 spurt to take a 27-23 advantage at the break.

“It was a hard-fought game that went back and forth, and I thought that we did a lot of different things,” Celtics coach Eileen Copenhaver said. “You want a call to go your way or a ball to drop, but they didn’t – and Minooka capitalized while we missed a couple of key opportunities down the stretch, and that it hurt us.

But it was a good game.”

JOLIET – When Lee Capista stepped aside as Joliet Catholic’s baseball coach in October 1998, Hilltoppers athletic director Dan Sharp knew exactly what he wanted to do – promote Jared Voss, who was coaching on the sophomore level, to varsity head coach.

However, Sharp still was relatively new to his position at JCA; and Voss, a 1992 JCA graduate, was a young man, every bit of 24 years young.

“I mentioned to our administration that I think Jared would do an outstanding job,” Sharp said. “They were reluctant because he was young, but they did it. Within two years, his team was playing in the state championship game.”

Now, his résumé ranks with any. Voss will be inducted into the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame during a ceremony Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Westin Hotel Yorktown Center in Lombard.

“He’s already been our head coach for 16 years, and now he will be one of the youngest Hall of Famers,” Sharp said.

Tony Giese is Voss’ longtime assistant.

“When the two of us were sophomore coaches, and Tony used to drive around dragging the infield at Ingalls Park, we talked about, just tried to imagine, what it would be like to be varsity coaches at Joliet Catholic,” Voss recalled.

“Then Lee stepped down in October. He embraced me, and Coach Sharp believed in me. The first year, I was interim. That was the spring of ’99. Sixteen years later, it’s amazing. My years at Joliet Catholic have really been a whirlwind.”

Through the years, Voss has coached teams to two state championships (2009 and 2013), two runner-up finishes (2000 and 2004), one third place (2008) and a fourth place (2010).

The Hilltoppers have won 11 regionals, six sectionals, five supersectionals and five East Suburban Catholic titles under Voss. That all adds up to a 413-174-1 record against what

In addition, his team won the Phil Lawler Classic state tournament last summer and was second in the summer of 2012.

JCA has had its share of big names during Voss’ tenure – Joe Benson, John Ruettiger, Nick Ratajczak and Kevin Duchene, to name a few. Current Hilltoppers Nick Dalesandro and Drake Fellows fall into that category as well. But

to Voss, it is not only the big names that make teams what they are.

“We’ve always been lucky with players like Joe Benson, John Ruettiger and Kevin Duchene,” he said. “But I always felt the sixth through 20th guys on the roster – the guys who hit seventh or eighth in the order – were just as important. “[Current Hilltoppers pitching coach] Jake Jaworski is a prime example. He was the

kind of player that has always made us succeed. He was a three-year varsity starter. He didn’t play baseball in college; but to me, he is a ballplayer.”

Voss said another of his former players he considers special is Mark Sopko, who helped pitch JCA to the state title game in 2000.

“Kevin Duchene was a great pitcher for us, but Mark Sopko really set the tone,” Voss said. “He embodied everything from a competitive standpoint that Joliet Catholic is all about, and what our baseball program is all about.”

As fond as Voss is of his players, however, he admires coaches most.

“You know how some guys collect baseball cards? I collect coaches’ cards,” he laughed. “I used to watch my brother, Jonathan, play and watch guys like Jack Schimanski and Carl Hunckler coach. I played my senior year for Joe Rodeghero.

I idolize all those guys, and Lee Capista, too.

“And I’m so fortunate to have had Leo Michalak and Bart Kemp with me, too. Bart has never taken a dime for his coaching, and he has done so much for our program.”

Sharp said that no less an authority than Joliet’s alltime legendary coach, Gordie Gillespie, predicted early on that Voss would be successful.

“Gordie mentioned how well Jared’s teams take batting practice and the way they run on and off the field,” Sharp said. “Those were signs he would be a good coach.

“Through the years, he keeps improving his knowledge of the game. He knows how to manage kids and manage games. His kids are always well prepared. They go out on the field believing they can win.”

Winning has been a constant during Voss’ career.

SPC preparing for 10-team schedules VIEWS Dick Goss Athletic directors in the Southwest Prairie Conference will be meeting to discuss, among other things, how to handle scheduling in the various sports when Joliet Central and Joliet West join the league in the 2016-17 school year.

A full round-robin is possible in football, with each of the 10 schools playing each of the other nine conference members.

Nobody in the league would have to find nonconference opponents, and every team destined to finish 5-4 knows it would have 40 points (opponent victories) toward playoff qualification.

That’s because you will earn four points on the five weeks you win and five points on the four weeks you lose.

Historically, 40 points with a 5-4 record always has qualified.

Of course, Proposal 10 – which was defeated last week – would have eliminated conferences in favor of a

region approach for football. Should that effort be tweaked and a new proposal pass in a statewide vote, we would have something altogether different to discuss.

But assuming conferences remain intact and schools everywhere are scrambling to find nonconference opponents, the 10-team SPC – especially considering how close the schools are geographically – would work nicely.

“The easiest thing from a football standpoint would be to play nine conference games,” Romeoville athletic director Jim Boudouris said during our discussion at the Romeoville Christmas Classic.

When you get into other sports, there will be other issues to tackle.

Plainfield Central athletic director Dave Stephens joined Boudouris and me in a discussion about other sports.

The possibility exists that the 10-team league can be split into two five-team divisions for sports such as basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball.

One idea tossed out was

“It’s a good move for everybody. It’s good for our school because it brings in two teams that are competitive with us.

We play them in several things already. And geographically, it’s great.”

Romeoville would fill out one division, and Minooka would complete the other.

You would play two games against the other four in your division and one against the five in the opposite division for 13 conference games.

“Basketball probably will have divisional play, and volleyball probably will have something similar,” Boudouris said.

“It looks like a win-win for everybody.”

The SPC for years has had an interesting schedule in baseball – a three-game conference series in a Tuesday-through-Thursday format against each of the other seven league members. That’s 21 conference games.

What if those three-game series continue against the four division foes, and each team also plays each of the other five teams in the other division twice for 22 league games? Just a thought.

As Stephens said, “There are some wrinkles that need to be worked out, but in time the conference will take shape.”

“It’s a good move for everybody,” Boudouris said.

“It’s good for our school because it brings in two teams that are competitive with us. We play them in several things already. And geographically, it’s great.”

In addition, Boudouris said, there is another plus.

“It’s important for our kids and coaches to get more [media] exposure,” he said.

“That will happen with us competing against the Joliets in conference events

in all sports on a regular basis.”

Stephens said the SPC, already a strong conference, could be getting better.

“Our hope is that the two Joliet schools will make a great conference even stronger,” he said. “We feel very fortunate in the SPC to have great balance and competitive spirit among the eight current schools. By having a conference so close in geography, it allows the fans and schools to form great rivalries.

“As you look around the state, many conferences have been going through changes on a yearly basis.

The SPC has been very stable, and this is the first big move since the conception of the conference. We hope the experience will be a positive for Joliet and the original eight.”

It’s an exciting time. How the schedules play out, and the quality of competition beginning two school years from now, will be worth watching.

And with about seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Buckeyes had extended their lead to 35-20.

The fourth-seeded Buckeyes answered Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota’s scoring pass on the opening drive of the first title game under the four-team playoff.

The second-seeded Ducks faced their biggest deficit of the season at 21-7 in a bid for their first national championship, with Mariota trying to become the seventh player since 1996 to win the Heisman and a national title in the same season.

Florida State’s Jameis Winston did it last season.

Slightly more than half the crowd at the oversized $1.2 billion home of the Dallas Cowboys was filled with red-clad Ohio State fans hoping for the Buckeyes’ fifth national title, but first under coach Urban Meyer.

Jones, Ohio State’s third starting quarterback this season, threw consecutive 26-yard passes, the first when the Buckeyes faced third down from their 5-yard line on their first scoring drive.

Elliott’s scoring run came two plays later. It was the second-longest scoring drive of the season for the Buckeyes.

Elliott, who had 98 yards rushing in the first half, ran 17 yards to the Oregon 1, setting up Jones’ scoring pass to Nick Vannett for a 14-7 lead with 1:08 left in the first.

The Buckeyes had two promising drives end with fumbles in the second quarter before Jones scored on a plunge inches from the goal line after his run on the previous play was ruled a touchdown but overturned on review.

Mariota’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Keanon Lowe capped a 75yard drive to start the game.

The opening drive was kept alive when a run by Mariota initially ruled a fumble recovered by the Buckeyes was overturned on a review that showed his knee down before Curtis Grant stripped the ball.

Is Teryl Austin the next Mike Tomlin?

That’s the question Bears general manager Ryan Pace must try to answer as Austin, the current Lions defensive coordinator, today will become the fourth known candidate to interview for the club’s head coaching vacancy.

The comparison between Tomlin and Austin is apt because Tomlin spent only one season as a defensive coordinator, in 2006 with the Vikings, before becoming the Super Bowl-winning head coach of the Steelers. Before his year in Minnesota, Tomlin was Tampa’s defensive backs coach from 2001 to 2005, earning a Super Bowl ring under Jon Gruden.

Preceding his masterful, but singular NFL coordinating job overseeing the NFL’s No. 2 scoring defense in Detroit in 2014, Austin coached the Ravens defensive backs from 2011 to 2013, where he won a Super Bowl under John Harbaugh.

Austin held the same position in Seattle from 2003 to 2006, and in Arizona from 2007 to 2009.

Austin is 49 years old, while Tomlin was only 35 when he landed in Pittsburgh.

As you can see, the Bears’ next interviewee actually has a fuller résumé than Tomlin did.

I’m not suggesting Austin is destined for coaching stardom like Tomlin; instead, I’m pointing you in the direction of the most recent success story under similar circumstances.

The main reason Austin is considered a fast riser in league circles and already reportedly has interviewed with Buffalo, Atlanta and San Francisco is because of his immediate success in Motown. Did he inherit a lot of defensive talent – far more than the Bears have to offer? Duh. The Lions have All-Pro players at all three levels.

But what caught the eye of all of these organizations, in addition to his preparedness, is the way Austin adapted his scheme to the personnel he inherited.

Coming from a Ravens defense known for its multiplicity and aggressiveness, Austin wisely went in the opposite direction.

It was because of the presence of one of the game’s most destructive three-techniques (Ndamukong Suh) and an ascending outside linebacker with great speed and instincts (DeAndre Levy), two staples in the scheme he inherited.

Austin recognized Detroit had the strength up front to get pressure with its front four, opting to blitz judiciously. Similarly, he was smart enough to know the Lions could stuff the run without selling out to do so, giving his secondary added freedom and flexibility.

A former secondary coach, Austin’s greatest work might have been with the DBs in Detroit. It wasn’t that long ago the Lions had one of the league’s worst pass defenses – they ranked 23rd in this category only one season ago.

Yet, upon Austin’s arrival, the Lions ascended to the NFL’s second-ranked pass defense in 2014. After a lackluster rookie season, Darius Slay became a solid cover corner. Glover Quin went from a quality starter to Pro Bowl player and the NFL’s interceptions leader.

The list goes on.

Veterans James Ihedigbo and Rashean Mathis found the fountain of youth with Austin.

Detroit survived the loss of its top two nickel corners, starting middle linebacker and nose guard to season-ending injuries.

But he plugged in guys, altering roles and using a variety of coverages with the unit barely skipping a beat.

So it’s safe to say the guy knows defense.

But is he ready to oversee an entire program? Has he built the necessary relationships to construct a winning coaching staff? Do players respond to his methods?

The folks in Detroit seem to think so.

I can tell you his players love playing for him. They appreciate his ability to devise varied game plans.

He’s lauded in league circles for his planning and attention to detail. I’m told he has a strong relationship with the front office – which Pace already has identified as being critical.

Some Bears fans will clamor for someone with previous head coaching experience – particularly given the still-green Pace. I can’t argue given the organization’s track record for almost exclusively tabbing first-time guys.

But just going off what I hear, Austin is ready. Similar opinions exist with Todd Bowles and Dan Quinn, both of whom already have met with the Bears.

Today, it’s Austin’s turn to make his case, and everything you’ve just read likely will be included.

Will it be enough?

Magic shoots season-high 59 percent win over Bulls

The undermanned Magic set a season high for points in a game while reaching the 100-point mark for only the 11th time this season.

The Magic jumped to a 6355 halftime lead. They shot 61 percent in each of the first two

quarters against the usually stout Bulls, who had ranked fourth in the NBA in field-goal percentage defense.

The Bulls had no answer for Vucevic, who had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists in the first half. Orlando received a considerable boost from its bench, which scored 25 points in that span.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Nikola Vucevic had 33 points and 11 rebounds, and the Orlando Magic snapped a six-game losing streak with a 121-114 victory over the Bulls on Monday night.

Orlando shot a season-high 59 percent from the field in its first win in Chicago since an 83-82 victory on Dec. 16, 2013.

The Magic had lost three in a row and 12 of 15 against the Bulls since the start of the 2010-11 season.

Victor Oladipo also scored 33 points for the Magic, and rookie Elfrid Payton added 10 points and seven assists.

Vucevic was 16 for 24 from the field in his NBA-best 23rd double-double of the season.

The terrific performance for the 7-foot center included a drive and left-handed dunk over forward Pau Gasol late in third period.

By LINDSEY TANNER The Associated Press CHICAGO – Head Start programs have been shown to help poor children do better in school, but they also may help them fight obesity, a study suggests.

During a year of Head Start preschool, obese and overweight children were much more likely to slim down than comparison groups of kids.

The study involved almost 44,000 preschool-aged children in Michigan and the researchers, from the University of Michigan, acknowledge it has weaknesses. But they say the potential benefits are important because obesity is so hard to treat and affects low-income children disproportionately.

Similar trends were seen in kids who started out overweight but not obese.

Nationwide, about 8 percent of preschoolers are obese, but the rate was mostly higher during the 2005-13 study.

THE SKINNY

The study found a reverse benefit for underweight children. Those in Head Start were more likely to gain weight and achieve a healthy weight after a year than other underweight kids.

THE LIMITATIONS

The Head Start group had fewer blacks and more whites than the Medicaid group; the non-Medicaid group had the fewest number of minority kids.

A more rigorous test would have compared more similar groups, randomly assigning only some children to attend Head Start. That would be unethical because of Head Start’s educational benefits, said lead researcher Dr. Julie Lumeng.

It’s likely that many kids in the comparison groups attended some kind preschool, perhaps including Head Start.

That means it’s not certain that participation in Head Start explains the weight improvements, she said.

But Dr. David Ludwig, a Harvard Medical School pediatrics professor and director of an obesity prevention center at Children’s Hospital Boston, called the results impressive and encouraging despite the limitations.

He said the researchers chose a “very reasonable” alternative study design, and that the results make sense, given the services Head Start programs provide.

Chicagoan’s death ruled a homicide, decades after shooting

By DON BABWIN The Associated Press CHICAGO –Tom Buchanan never really said what happened back in the 1940s when he was shot – but whatever it was, it finally killed him.

The recent death of the 87-year-old retired steel worker was ruled a homicide, Cook County Medical Examin er’s office spokesman Frank Shuftan said Thursday, after an autopsy revealed that the “gunshot ultimately caused the complications to his abdomen that ultimately killed him.”

Shuftan said Buchanan’s family members didn’t have any details about the shooting. “We don’t know anything about it,” he said.

Buchanan’s 82-year-old cousin, Mattie Matthews, said he never served in the military, so he could not have been shot in World War II. She said Buchanan, a quiet man who never married or had children, died without telling her what happened – even though she probably was the closest relative and friend that he had. All she knew about the shooting came from a conversation she overheard

among grown-ups when she was a child.

“I was about 10 or 12 years old when I heard my aunt and my mother talking about how he had gotten shot, but I never heard anything else and he (Buchanan) never talked about it to me,” she said of the shooting that must have happened not long after Buchanan and his mother moved from Mississippi to Chicago.

Matthews said she recalled that conversation recently when Buchanan started talking about a pain in his gut.

She said her cousin was the kind of man who didn’t want

anybody to make a fuss, and initially wouldn’t even consider leaving the independent living facility on the city’s South Side to see a doctor.

“But when I went Saturday he was holding his stomach and I told him I was taking him to the hospital because he was getting worse,” she said.

At 11:18 a.m. the next day, Buchanan was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, according to the medical examiner’s office.

His death has prompted an investigation by the Chicago Police Department, where spokesman Martin Maloney

said detectives were talking to family members to determine, among other things, when the shooting occurred and if it even happened in the city.

Maloney added that it was not clear if any records of an investigation still exist.

Meanwhile, Matthews said she is saddened and confused by the death of her cousin, who always seemed so healthy.

“Two weeks ago, I was talking and I told him I wish I could get around like him,” she said. “How could a gunshot wound he got 70 years ago ... have contributed to his death?”

South’s three-diamond rebid was a help-suit game-try, which asked his partner to concentrate on his pointed-suit holdings. North, with an excellent singleton diamond, jumped to game.

Yes, this was a tad pushy by South, but he could count three points for his singleton given the known nine- or 10-card spade fit. Also, his hand had six losers (one spade, two hearts, two diamonds and one club), which is the normal number for a game-try after this start to an auction.

Declarer has five potential losers in his hand: one spade, one heart, two diamonds and one club. He will have to ruff his two diamond losers in the dummy, but the first trick is critical.

Suppose declarer wins with his heart king, cashes his diamond ace and ruffs a diamond -- what next?

He is stranded on the board.

However he exits from the dummy, the defenders can win the trick and play two rounds of trumps to stop the second diamond ruff.

Declarer must win the first trick with dummy’s heart ace. Then the play proceeds: diamond to the ace, diamond ruff, heart to the king, diamond ruff, trump. The defenders have no answer.

The following tips may help you to get through this difficult time: • Establish a simple, daily schedule. A familiar routine can help restore a sense of normalcy and make grief more manageable. It lends structure to the day at a time when life seems unfamiliar and out of control.

• Maintain a regular sleep schedule. When you’re grieving, sleep can be particularly important at helping maintain emotional balance. Grief is exhausting, and sleep can represent a relief from the emotional pain of loss.

• Keep up with your exercise. A simple walk, a bike ride, yoga or a harder workout can ease agitation, anger and depression. Exercise can serve as a distraction when you need a break from grief. Exercise can also help lift spirits by releasing mood-elevating hormones, relieving stress and promoting a sense of well-being.

• Finally, give yourself permission to grieve.

Healing won’t happen on a schedule. Be patient with yourself. And if you need a break from grieving, that’s OK, too.

Dear Doctor K: My spouse passed away last year, and I am still grieving. Is this normal?

Dear Reader: By coincidence, I’m writing this reply to your question on the 51st anniversary of my father’s death. He died very young. This is a sad day – at least for me, this grief never fully ends.

Grief is not a mountain to be climbed and then descended with a map in hand. It differs greatly from one person to another, and from one culture to the next.

In America, there can be pressure, often from well-meaning family and friends, to attain “closure” by the time a year has passed. The truth, though, is that grief doesn’t neatly conclude at the one-year mark.

The more important someone was to your life, the more opportunities there are for happy and sad reminders that underscore your loss. The other evening, for example, my wife had placed a glass of wine near the edge of the dinner table.

When I saw it, I instinctively moved it away from the edge.

Then I realized that my father was very compulsive about this.

When my sister and I were young, whenever we had placed a glass of liquid near the edge of the table, he’d move it. He explained that it could easily have been knocked to the floor, and the consequences of that.

I realized that I was still figuratively hearing my father’s voice – 51 years later.

Feelings of sadness, abandonment, loss and even anger are especially likely around birthdays, weddings, the anniversary of the death, and holidays or other occasions you might have shared.

A familiar scent, song or likeness can also trigger feelings of grief. All of this is entirely normal.

Dear Detoured: Some of these suggestions might be helpful: (1) Contact a university medical school if there is one in your community, and ask to speak to the Department of Psychiatry.

Ask if it has an outpatient clinic. If it does, inquire there. If not, ask if someone on the staff deals with problems like the ones you’re experiencing.

(2) If you live in a town with a college, find out if it has a graduate school. If so, does the graduate school have a psychology program and a clinic that charges on a sliding financial scale?

If there is no clinic, ask if someone on the staff of the psychology department sees people privately and what’s the person’s phone number. Then contact that person.

(3) People can get referrals from mental health organizations. The largest credentialed ones are the American Psychological Association, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and the National Association of Social Workers. These are legitimate organizations and have professional

(4) You can locate government-funded agencies with psychiatric services by going on the Internet.

These activities offend and embarrass me. My husband says the jokes are innocuous, that I’m too sensitive and I’m making a mountain out of a molehill.

PUBLIC NOTICE NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING CITY OF JOLIET, ILLINOIS 2015 JOLIET SPECIAL SERVICE AREA NO. 1 JOHN STREET / PRAIRIE AVENUE NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on the 3RD DAY OF FEBRUARY, 2015 at 6:30 p.m., a hearing will be convened before the Mayor and City Council of the City of Joliet in the Council Chambers of the Joliet Municipal Building, 150 West Jefferson Street, Joliet, Illinois 60432, to consider the establishment of a Special Service Area known as the 2015 JOLIET SPECIAL SERVICE AREA NO. 1 JOHN STREET / PRAIRIE AVENUE, consisting of the real property described hereinbelow generally consisting of those properties having frontage on John Street lying between Prairie Avenue and Raynor Avenue, and those properties having frontage on Prairie Avenue lying between Oneida Street and Jefferson Street. The purpose of establishing the Special Service Area is to provide special services to properties located in the Area for a special tax on such properties.

The maximum special tax on a taxable property improved at the time of levy with the owner-occupied single family, two family or three family residence shall be $300.00. For the purpose of determining the maximum special tax, the term “property” shall also include unimproved property (or property only improved with accessory structures), which are contiguous to and have common ownership with the improved property on which the owner occupied structure is situated. The proposed tax would be levied and imposed no more than one time.

TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that all interested persons, including all persons owning taxable real property located within the special service area, will be given an opportunity to be heard at the hearing regarding the establishment of the special service area and the tax levy and an opportunity to file objections to the amount of the tax levy. The Mayor and City Council shall hear and determine all protests and objections at the hearing and the hearing may be adjourned to another date without further notice other than a motion to be entered upon the minutes fixing the time and place of its adjournment. The Mayor and City Council may adopt an ordinance establishing the proposed special service area at the hearing. The special service to be provided in the special service area consist of the design and installation of storm sewer extensions/drainage appurtenances, excavation of the existing roadway and driveway aprons within the right-of-way, construction of combination concrete curb and gutter Type B-6.12, construction of concrete driveway aprons, and the placement of 3 inches of topsoil and sod in the parkway. The placement of Bituminous Concrete Binder Base Course and a Bituminous Concrete Surface Course will be constructed under separate contracts and will not be charged to the property owners.

LEGAL NOTICE CITY OF JOLIET ADVERTISEMENT TO BIDS CONTRACT NO. 2053-0214 PROJECT NAME: HALDEMANN TERRACE SANITARY SEWER REHABILITATION POINT REPAIRS The City of Joliet, Illinois, does hereby invite sealed bids for the completion of 11 sanitary sewer point repairs and installation of one manhole in a backyard utility easement in the Haldemann Terrace Subdivision. The contract will include all work necessary to complete the point repairs, install the manhole and perform all restoration to return the area to its original condition.

Bids will be received at the Office of the City Clerk, City of Joliet Municipal Building, 150 West Jefferson Street, Joliet, Illinois 604324156 until 10:00 A.M. local time on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at which time they will be opened and publicly read aloud.
