THE HERALD NEWS news@theherald news.com MORRIS – The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office released results from the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” holiday crackdown on drunken drivers.

During the holiday season, reducing the deadly dangers from drunken drivers was a top priority as Grundy County sheriff’s deputies were out in force to arrest those who put themselves and others on the road at risk, according to a news release from the sheriff’s department.

From Dec. 20 to Jan. 5, deputies arrested six drunk drivers who had blood alcohol concentrations over the legal limit.

“We warned partygoers not to drink and drive, and we backed it up with aggressive enforcement,” said Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan in the news release.

“These offenders needed to realize their actions have serious and potentially fatal consequences, and

“Drunk driving is dangerous and deadly; and people can get too wrapped up in the excitement of the holidays and make bad decisions,” Callahan added. “The bottom line is, if you have been celebrating the

holidays with alcohol, you don’t belong behind the wheel. Never drink and drive.”

The recent law enforcement crackdown was funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation, and is part of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns.

American Legion caravan to visit Morris Tuesday THE HERALD NEWS news@theherald news.com MORRIS – The American Legion Department of Illinois’ annual caravan began last week and is scheduled to stop Tuesday in Morris.

The caravan’s theme this year is “Veterans Assistance and Rehabilitation,” and it will focus on delivering key updates to military service personnel about issues that directly impact them, and to attract new members to the American Legion’s active base, according to a news release.

“This is an opportunity for lo-

cal American Legion Posts to meet with leadership from national, state and district levels; an opportunity for those interested in the American Legion to learn more about what the American Legion does and for veterans in general to hear from our national headquarters regarding veterans issues,” Ken Buck, superintendent of the Grundy County Veterans Assistance Commission, said in an email about the caravan.

The caravan kicked off Thursday.

The caravan visits different posts around the state and features National Vice Commander Robert Newman,

and other state and local leaders. Issues to be discussed include veterans’ healthcare, Medicare reimbursement, operation of the National Emergency Fund and the women veterans program.

“This is an unprecedented time in our nation’s history, with so many in need – our veterans especially need our help, and we have a moral obligation to support them,” Newman said in the news release. “I invite everyone to join us in our annual family membership caravan at a post near you.”

EMPHASIS ON GUN SAFETY Number of concealed carry instructors increasing in Will County

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Tim Wiklacki and Charles Powell have been training people for several years on how to properly use firearms.

But after the Firearm Concealed Carry Act passed the Illinois Legislature in July – and went into effect earlier this month – they turned their instructional sessions into a business, a New Lenox-based gun safety school called Total CCW that includes training courses for concealed carry licenses.

“Business is going good,” Powell said. “But it’s not just about making money. As a gun enthusiast I want people to be safe with them.”

As each day passes with the new law, Illinois State Police are seeing more people apply to become certified concealed carry instructors.

More than 1,900 Illinois residents are certified concealed carry instructors as of Saturday night, according to the state police website. Will County has 113 certified instructors, many of them current or former law enforcement officials.

State police have on average received 1,000 permit applications daily since it opened the process to pre-qualified citizens Dec. 18. The first day of the new law boomed with 4,525 applications, Illinois State Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said.

“Not all of those make it to the next phase, which is now a 30-day process law enforcement objection period, the hard part,” Bond said. “These are applicants who have completed all the required steps, obtained fingerprints, showed their firearms training certificate.”

More than 11,000 applicants are in the next phase, which allows any law enforcement agency from any jurisdiction the ability to look at the application and

reject it. If state police substantiates the law enforcement agency’s claim, the applicant can be kicked out of the process.

Anyone can challenge a concealed carry instructor’s eligibility through a complaint form on the state police website.

Safety was a key issue when the new law was being discussed

in Springfield. So legislators made the path to get the certificate one of the toughest in the nation, according to Ron Van Dyke, owner of RP Shooting Sports in Joliet.

“The state doesn’t provide a curriculum to teach. We have to do that.” Van Dyke said. “But they do provide guidelines that

we used to create our course.”

According to the new law, concealed carry courses must provide students with 16 hours of training, with less time required if the applicant has previous law enforcement or military training.

In those 16 hours, the curriculum must teach firearm safety, the basics of marksmanship, gun

care and weapons handling.

While safety is the most important part of Van Dyke’s course, he also teaches decision-making skills, which he said was important because of the unpredictable nature of circumstances. He has five concealed carry instructors certified police officers on staff.

“The knowledge that comes with being an officer helps,” said John Byrne, RP Shooting Sports instructor, who is also on the Joliet police force. “We talk about what happens in situations where they may need to use a gun.”

While RP Shooting Sports is not endorsed by Joliet Police, Byrne said he and another officer were given permission for a secondary job.

Van Dyke said he has received positive feedback on the program by students.

“They went over a lot of different scenarios and different laws,” said Genelle Chisholm, New Lenox resident. “They were thorough and covered every avenue in the class. You’re really going to think before you do pull the trigger.”

Chisholm now owns a gun and the permit, and plans on concealing it to keep her safe.

“I didn’t want to be a victim and I want to protect myself as needed,” she said.

Total CCW’s students also appreciated the rigors of the course, even those as experienced as Patrick Macica, who has been shooting since he was 7.

“It’s our right to own a gun, really a right and freedom,” Macica said.

While Macica knew the basics of shooting, he still found the class valuable.

“I learned about ballistics and even what’s inside a bullet,” Macica said. “The guys here are very knowledgeable and they explained the ins and outs of guns, especially safety.”

OBITUARIES RONALD B. BENSON Born: Dec. 1, 1934; in Mazon Died: Jan. 10, 2014; in Morris Ronald B. Benson, 79, of Morris, passed away Friday morning, January 10, 2014 at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 17, 2014 at Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St., in Morris with Pastor Patrick Lohse officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will take place at a later date. Masonic rites will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Born December 1, 1934 in Mazon, he was the son of Noble and Anna (Skogen) Benson. He graduated from Mazon Township High School with the class of 1952. Later he graduated from DeVry Institute in Chicago. Ronald married Janice Gordon on June 21, 1958 in Mazon at the Park Street Congregational Church. For most of their married life they lived in Plainfield and Morris. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed as an ironworker for Local No. 1 in Chicago.

Survivors include his loving wife, Janice of Morris; two sons, Dale (Kim)Benson of Tomball, Texas and Scott (Maureen) Benson of St. Peters, Missouri; one daughter, Kim (Thomas) Page of Montgomery; one daughter-in-law, Susan Benson of Pontiac; eleven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; one brother, David (Daleene) Benson of Lynnwood, Washington; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one son, Michael in 2012; three brothers, Donald, Kenneth and Gerald Benson; three sisters, Bernice Reader, Anna Mae Blake and Melva Welch.

He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mazon Mason Lodge No. 826, Boot Kickers Dance Club and former volunteer fireman and an EMT in Bolingbrook .

He enjoyed his time on the computer, auction sales and camping. Memorials may be given to the American Kidney

Member of St. Peter Lutheran Church. Bernice worked on the family farm and was a seamstress.

Andrew Krull Jr. was devoted to service “While everyone else was doing the public work and up onstage taking the credit, Andrew was behind the scenes. If you needed something done, you went to Andrew.”

So said Randy Seggebruch of Newark, member of the University of Illinois Extension serving Grundy, Kankakee and Will counties and chairman of Grundy County Friends of Extension.

He met Krull years ago when they both showed pigs through Grundy County’s 4-H program.

Although most 4-H participants tend to fade away from the organization and reappear when their children join – as Seggebruch did when his twin boys turned eight – that wasn’t the case with Krull, Seggebruch said, although Krull’s daughter, Hannah, 10, also is a member of 4-H. “When I came back, he was still plugging away,” Seggebruch said.

For 10 years, Krull led the Coal City Community 4-H club, said Krull’s wife, Kelly Krull of Mazon.

Krull also served on the club’s livestock committee and was elected to the 4-H Hall of Fame in 2007, Kelly said. His devotion to service was limitless.

Krull knew “every inch of the Grundy County fairgrounds,” including the electrical components.

Krull set up and cleaned up, helped others with their livestock and even cleaned bathrooms.

Much of that work happened on weekends and late into the night, Seggebruch said.

Krull spent much of his childhood at his grandmother’s farm, Kelly said.

As a teen, Krull worked for Mazon farmer Mark Wills.

After graduating in 1992 with an agriculture degree from Illinois State University in Normal, Andrew returned to Mark’s

farm, Kelly said.

After Andrew and Kelly married, they moved to his grandmother’s farm and continued helping Anna Krull until her death, Kelly said.

Andrew also rented farm land from a neighbor to raise goats and cattle and to grow corn and soybeans, Kelly said.

“I will continue to do so because that was Andrew’s passion and it became mine, too,” said Kelly, who knew nothing about farming until she met Andrew. “This beauti-

ful house, which is almost 100 years old, the land, the love of farming, the love raising livestock, a beautiful daughter. ... He gave me everything I had and I am forever grateful.”

Debbie Jo Kinsella of Minooka served with Andrew on the Grundy County 4-H Association, she said.

The success of the Grundy County Agricultural District was just as import to Andrew as the 4-H fair, Kinsella said.

“He was always trying to improve it for the kids

and it’s been a good thing for the community,” Kinsells said. “When he became ill with the brain tumor, it was very hard for him to give up those positions.”

Krull had “passed out” one day in June 2011 and then began vomiting and having “really bad headaches.”

He eventually was diagnosed as having an aggressive glioblastoma, Kelly said.

Treatments, as well as an experimental vaccine trial, failed him.

The cancer claimed the vision on the left side of each eye and paralyzed his left leg. Kelly said.

In April 2013, members of the Grundy County Friends of Extension coordinated a benefit for Krull, with the Future Farmers of America groups in Newark, Seneca and Serena donating and preparing 1,500 pork chop dinners.

The event raised $90,000, Seggebruch said.

Many of the attendees were farmers, Seggebruch said, who left their spring farming to support Krull.

That support from others continued all the way until Krull’s death on Nov. 17 at the age of 43.

“He had such a profound influence on people,” Kelly said, “that his nurse practitioner from the University of Chicago actually came down twice to see him in the nursing home, all the way from Chicago to Dwight, and he wasn’t even a patient of hers at the time.”

Ice Fest draws hundreds to downtown Frankfort

jdallke@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – Temperatures may have climbed into the 40s Sunday, but there was plenty of ice to be found in downtown Frankfort.

The village of Frankfort kicked off its annual Winter on the Green series Sunday with Ice Fest, a display of 27 ice sculptures and a live ice sculpting demonstration in Breidert Green Park.

Ice Fest brought hundreds of people to downtown Frankfort as residents took in the ice sculpting, heated trolley rides through downtown, and dog sled rides from the Illinois Alaskan Malamute Rescue Association, all of which were free.

Mary Canino, director of Winter on the Green and manager of community relations for the village of Frankfort, said the event is a great way to bring the community together during the colder months.

“It helps get the community involved and to bring awareness to downtown,” Canino said. “And it gets people out of the house in the winter. Not many places have winter events, so we hope with the six weeks, and a variety of winter events, it provides something for everybody.”

Winter on the Green will have a different community event each Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. through Feb. 16.

Future events will include a winter carnival, chili cook-off, and a chocolate fondue tasting during Valentine’s weekend.

what the weather is like, Ice Fest seems to always be an event that entices residents to come downtown.

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s raining or snowing or what the weather is, it’s an opportunity for families to get out of the house and just get outside.”

Frankfort resident Andy Hunt has brought his kids to Winter on the Green for several years and said the event is always a special event for his family. His 7-year-old, Charlie, even got a shaved block of ice from the sculpting demonstration, which the artist carved the outline of a penguin into.

“It’s great for sure,” Hunt said. “It’s something we look forward to every year, especially wen cabin fever hits in the winter time.”

more year, he knew he was more interested in the science behind the medical treatments.

He was ultimately drawn to immunology because it integrated chemistry, biology and medicine, he said.

Sandoval said no class can replace the experience of working in a lab.

“I work a lot of hours but it doesn’t seem like you work a lot of hours, because you’re constantly engaged,” he said.

Sandoval is not sure how many years he will spend studying in Boston, he said. His goal is to have his own academic

lab where he can research what he wants.

He recently emailed Leffler to give him an update on his career progress and to offer advice for prospective scientists.

Leffler said he shares such messages with his current students to give them an insight into what science is like at the next level.

The success of Sandoval and other former students is a good reflection of the science classes at Lemont High School, Leffler said, and he hopes it inspires his students.

“We’d like to keep the ball rolling,” he said.

LEMONT – Gabe Sandoval has studied his way from the labs of Lemont High School to one of the most prestigious research institutes in the country.

The Lemont High School graduate earned a doctorate in immunology in April from Washington University in St. Louis and is working on his post-doctoral fellowship at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and at Broad Institute in Cambridge.

He studied leukemia and b cell development for his doctorate and is currently researching prostate cancer, he said.

The scientific process of coming up with and testing ideas is something Sandoval said he has liked since he was a kid.

“You can be the first one to learn something that no one else in history ever knew,” he said.

Lemont High School Science Department Chair Tim Leffler said Sandoval was a passionate student when he taught him in the school’s inaugural Advanced Placement Biology course.

“He was a leader in the classroom,” Leffler said.

“He always put in the time. He was always willing to help others.”

‘Their talent is just amazing’ Young Shorewood musicians perform for senior citizens at the Timbers

By KRIS STADALSKY The Herald-News Correspondent Siblings Elizabeth and Thomas Ridgway of Shorewood are two young, award-winning pianists, and they recently treated residents of the Timbers of Shorewood to an afternoon of music.

Residents of the retirement community gathered in the facility’s piano lounge and lined the adjoining hallways to enjoy the performances. Staff members gathered around as well to hear the two soloists play.

The performance was presented by HUGS Juniors of Shorewood, of which Elizabeth is a member. Elizabeth started the HUGS elderly program.

She and her older brother both take time out of their hectic schedules to play at the Timbers several times a year. “(The elderly) are one of the more forgotten sects of our population, and it’s the elderly that are the ones who should get our attention,” Elizabeth said. “It’s important we don’t lose where we came from.”

Timbers Director Shelly Goggins is always excited to have Thomas and Elizabeth perform when they are on break from school.

“I love having them, their talent is just amazing,” Goggins said.

The residents recognize great talent as well, she said.

Both Elizabeth and Thomas have been homeschooled all their lives.

Piano lessons always were a part of their daily school routine.

Elizabeth is currently a high school junior and Thomas is a sophomore at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., where he is studying musical performance on a full tuition scholarship.

Elizabeth is a nine-time national winner of the American College of Musician’s piano auditions and was a gold medal winner in the Chicago Area Sonata

competition in December.

She studies with world-renowned concert pianist Dr. Yulia Lipmanovich.

You may recognize Elizabeth as the 2013 Miss Shorewood. She also is an accomplished debater and public speaker. She was a six-state regional debate champion this past season and in June she finished in the top five at the NCFCA national speech championship, where she also was awarded a sweepstakes trophy for top female speaker in the nation.

Being a pianist, a speaker and debater all have something in common, Elizabeth said.

“They are performance related and both expressive,” she said. “That’s kind of the common ground.”

Thomas is studying under Craig Nies at Vanderbilt’s Blair School of Music, where he was recognized as outstanding freshman his first year at the school.

As a freshman, he also was the winner of the Vanderbilt concerto competition.

In 2011, he won the Metropolitan Youth Symphony’s Concerto Competition, and most recently was named a Young Steinway Artist, a designation reserved for a select group of young pianists worldwide.

Thomas has been invited to perform with the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra and will be highlighted Jan. 18 at the Lincoln-Way North Performing Arts Center.

“It’s a great opportunity they have given me,” Thomas said. “Not a lot

of people get to do these things in this professional setting.”

Both Elizabeth and Thomas love to share their music with others, and performing through HUGS Juniors at the Timbers is a perfect venue to do so.

“We love them (the residents),” Elizabeth said.

“It’s so much fun to come and play for them.”

Most of Morris’ big ’14 projects set for spring

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The city of Morris has big plans for 2014, including road improvement projects, big business prospects and a harder push to get illegal drugs off the street.

Many of the projects won’t begin until the spring when the weather is more construction friendly, starting with the state’s widening of Route 47.

“As we go forward it is going to be a bit hectic on the north end as the state prepares to widen 47 to five lanes,” Mayor Richard Kopczick said.

Route 47 will be reconstructed with two northbound and two southbound lanes from north of Interstate 80 in Morris to north of Sherrill Road. The work also will involve the replacement of bridges carrying the highway over Saratoga and Valley Run creeks.

The project is expected to begin in the spring and take about two years. It is a state and federally funded project, but the city will contribute about $857,000 toward affiliated work with the project, such as moving telephone lines, and gas and sewer mains. A new traffic signal at Route 47 and Prologis Parkway is included, as well as the addition of roadway lights.

Also north of I-80 will be the construction of a new Pilot Travel Center on the east side of Route 47, Kopczick said. Another business proposed for that side of town is a production

facility for Costco, which already has a distribution center there. Costco is looking at making a $110 million investment by possibly building a new facility.

The proposed area is just west of its current distribution center at 3800 N. Division St. The company has submitted a draft annexation agreement to the city. The parties are starting negotiations so the project is not official yet.

“If it goes well, maybe we will see it break ground this spring, also,” Kopczick said.

The city also is looking forward to a Goodwill store coming on Mission Parkway just east of the Aldi store.

The Morris Municipal Airport also continues to be a priority for city officials. This month it is hoped the state will obtain bids on the runway extension project so construction can start on it in the spring, Kopczick said.

The city plans to extend its north-south runway and taxiway to the north by 500 feet, making it 5,500 feet, to accommodate larger aircraft. In the more distant future, the extension also includes widening the runway from 75 to 100 feet and overlaying it with more asphalt to accommodate heavier aircraft.

As part of this project the city had to obtain numerous parcels of land to accommodate the expansion. So as part of this project, Whitman Road will be extended west of Ashley Road with a bridge and roadway, which is needed to provide residences on

that road new access since the airport work will no longer allow them direct access to Route 47.

From the Morris police perspective, Chief Brent Dite has high hopes for 2014, too.

In 2013, Morris police was able to add four new officers to its department.

This allowed Dite to assign a new Morris officer to the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad.

“With a new officer assigned to that, not that it wasn’t always our focus, but it adds to our programs we use and our strategies to combat illegal narcotics in the area,” Dite said.

Morris police previously had an officer with MANS, but that officer left to work for the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, Dite said. When the city’s staff was reduced, they were unable to assign an officer to MANS for a time.

The police department also plans to bring back the Morris Police Citizens Police Academy this year.

Last year it was canceled because there was not enough participants. The class needs a minimum of 15, Dite said.

“We’ve held 20-some classes in the past so people who have wanted to be involved in it really have,” he said. “For awhile we were holding them two times a year.”

The interest has declined some so Dite said he is hoping it will pick up again this year.

The department will start putting information out on the academy closer to March, he said.

NEWS BRIEFS 5 shot in Elgin in stable condition ELGIN – Police in the northwest Chicago suburb of Elgin say five people have been shot.

Authorities say the shootings happened about 3:10 a.m. Sunday. All of the five victims have injuries that weren’t life threatening. They were taken to area hospitals.

Police say the gang crimes unit responded to the scene and is investigating.

70 mph sign installation delayed SPRINGFIELD – Last week’s frigid and snowy weather has delayed installing signs along Illinois interstates and tollways increasing the speed limit to 70 mph, state transportation officials said.

A new law took effect Jan. 1 that increases the maximum speed limit on tollways and interstate highways in Illinois to 70 mph from 65 mph. Illinois Department of Transportation officials hoped to install about 900 new 70-mph signs by Friday That’s because the crews in charge of switching the speed limit signs were busy with other tasks. IDOT had 1,755 trucks assigned to snow duty and 3,700 full- and part-time employees to clear roads.

“The recent winter storm was top priority for our operations crews, but now that the weather has improved, starting next week, we hope to get more 70-mph signs erected throughout the state,” Ervin said.

State officials have asked drivers not to start driving 70 mph until the new signs are installed. It will cost about $200,000 to update the signs.

Minimum wage hike to test 2014 governor candidates

By SOPHIA TAREEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – The long-percolating issue of Illinois’ minimum wage rate could take center stage throughout the 2014 election campaign as Gov. Pat Quinn pushes to raise it by year’s end while his Republican challengers fine-tune arguments that it could backfire on workers who want to keep their jobs.

Quinn wants Illinois to hike its minimum wage from $8.25 per hour to at least $10, an effort that coincides with a national Democratic strategy to make the economy and income differences a prominent theme in this year’s elections.

On the other side, a coalition of business groups is ready to oppose those efforts, saying a wage hike pushes employers to cut jobs.

One Quinn challenger, Winnetka businessman Bruce Rauner, already has been criticized for reversing his position on the issue, while all four Republican gubernatorial candidates are set to attend a Feb. 4 Illinois Man-

ufacturers’ Association forum, where organizers say the minimum wage will be a main topic.

Roughly 1.1 million people in Illinois make the state minimum wage, meaning a full-time minimum wage worker in Illinois makes roughly $17,000 annually.

Illinois last raised its minimum wage in 2010 through a four-step increase, and the state’s rate is the highest among Midwestern states, $1 more than in neighboring Iowa, Indiana and Wisconsin.

Experts say the issue will be a tough one for GOP candidates, especially leading up to the March 18 primary.

The idea of raising the rate is something the party typically opposes as bad for business, but it’s popular with voters.

“Republican candidates ... have to finesse this issue in the primary where they don’t alienate primary voters and, at the same time ... leave themselves to appeal to the [general] electorate,” said David Yepsen, director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University.

Enrichment disputes hamper Iran deal

By GEORGE JAHN The Associated Press VIENNA – Nearly seven weeks after signing a landmark nuclear deal, Iran and six world powers hope to reach an agreement this week on its implementation. But differences over Tehran’s push to improve its uranium enrichment abilities could delay its enactment and strengthen critics of the accord in Washington and Tehran.

Both sides say agreement is possible at a twoday meeting beginning Thursday afternoon in Geneva – with caveats.

European Union spokeswoman Maja Kocijanic said “some issues remain to be resolved” during the talks, a statement echoed

by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham.

The meeting is formally being held by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and EU senior negotiator Helga Schmid

on behalf of the six world powers.

But the U.S. State Department has announced that senior U.S. negotiator Wendy Sherman also would attend – an indication that Washington wants to be in place if the two sides overcome their differences and announce a deal by Friday.

Asked if the U.S. anticipated agreement, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Wednesday that “there are just a few remaining issues, so we’re working toward that.”

Psaki did not go into specifics on the nature of the disagreements in keeping with the confidential nature of the negotiations.

But two officials told The Associated Press that Iran is coming to the table with demands to exempt a facility used for research and the development of uranium enrichment from the overall curbs on its enrichment. That is something opposed by the six powers which sealed the Nov. 24 deal with Tehran.

Depending on its grade, enriched uranium can be used either for reactor fuel or – at levels above 90 percent – for the fissile core of a nuclear warhead. Iran insists it has no interest in nuclear weapons only nuclear power but the United States and its allies are skeptical.

Limiting uranium enrichment is one of the core

aims of the six-month interim deal meant to prepare ground for a permanent accord on Iran’s nuclear program.

Under the November agreement, Iran agreed to limit its uranium enrichment to 5 percent – the grade commonly used to power reactors. The deal also commits Iran to stop producing 20 percent en-

riched uranium – which is only a technical step away from weapons-grade material – and to neutralize its 20 percent stockpile.

At the same time, the agreement allows Tehran to continue enrichment research and development – a loophole the two officials say Iran interprets as allowing it to continue producing 20 percent uranium at its research and development site at Natanz, south of Tehran.

Iranian negotiators say no additional 20 percent material will be accumulated, because any made at the site will be immediately neutralized, said the officials, who represent countries that are members of the Vienna-based U.N. nuclear agency monitoring Tehran’s atomic activities. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss what is said at the closed meetings.

But representatives of the six powers – the Unit-

ed States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany – argue that the preliminary Geneva deal prohibits all enrichment above 5 percent, even for research and development purposes.

The two sides also are coming to the table Thursday with an additional dispute about what can be done at the Natanz site.

As reported by the AP last month, Iran told representatives of the six powers that it had installed some advanced centrifuges at the facility after signing the Nov. 24 deal, asserting that it had a right to do so under the research and development provisions of the accord.

That is being opposed by the United States and its allies. They argue that installing any centrifuge that increases overall numbers, particularly a new model, violates Tehran’s commitment to freeze the amount and type of enriching machines it has at Nov. 24 levels.

Health care website frustrates Spanish speakers

By KELLI KENNEDY and RUSSELL CONTRERAS The Associated Press ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Mirroring problems with the federal health care website, people around the nation attempting to navigate the Spanish version have discovered their own set of difficulties.

The site, CuidadoDeSalud.gov, launched more

than two months late.

And the translations were so clunky and full of grammatical mistakes that critics say they must have been computer-generated – the name of the site itself can literally be read “for the caution of health.”

“When you get into the details of the plans, it’s not

all written in Spanish. It’s written in Spanglish, so we end up having to translate it for them,” said Adrian Madriz, a health care navigator who helps with enrollment in Miami.

The issues with the site underscore the halting efforts across the nation to get Spanish speakers enrolled under the federal health care law. Critics say that as a result of various

problems, including those related to the website, many people whom the law was designed to help have been left out of the first wave of coverage.

Federal officials say they have been working to make the site better and plan further improvements soon. Also, administrators say they welcome feedback and try to fix typos or other errors quickly.

“We launched consumer-friendly Spanish online enrollment tools on CuidadoDeSalud.gov in December which represents one more way for Latinos to enroll in Marketplace plans,” said Health and Human Services Department spokesman Richard Olague in an email to The Associated Press. “Since the soft-launch, we continue to work closely with key

stakeholders to get feedback in order to improve the experience for those consumers that use the website.”

Still, efforts to enroll Spanish speakers have fallen short in several states with large Hispanic populations, and critics say the translated version of HealthCare.gov could have helped boost those numbers.

The 81-year-old woman placed it there after forgetting several times the tap water was tainted after a coal processing chemical leaked into the area’s water supply. Every time she turned on the water, she quickly stopped and cleaned her hands with peroxide – just to make sure she was safe.

miner, Wireman was angered about the chemical spill that’s deprived 300,000 West Virginians of clean tap water for four days, but doesn’t blame the coal or chemical industries.

“I hope this doesn’t hurt coal,” said Wireman, who lives in an area known as Chemical Valley because of all the plants nearby. “Too many West Virginians depend on coal and chemicals. We need those jobs.”

And that’s the dilemma for many West Virginians: The industries provide thousands of good paying jobs but also pose risks for the communities

surrounding them, such as the chemical spill or coal mine disasters. The current emergency began Thursday after a foaming agent used in coal processing escaped from a Freedom Industries plant in Charleston and seeped into the Elk River. Since then, residents have been ordered not to use tap water for anything but flushing toilets.

Gov. Earl Tomblin said Sunday water tests were encouraging, but he didn’t give a timetable for when people might be able to use water again.

“The numbers look good. They are very encouraging,” Tomblin said.

NEWS BRIEFS Envoys insist Syria talks must proceed PARIS – Syria’s Western-backed opposition came under steely pressure Sunday to attend peace talks in just over a week as envoys from 11 countries converged to help restore, and test, credibility of a rebel coalition sapped by vicious infighting and indecision.

But diplomacy’s limits were starkly apparent in Syria itself, where activists said rebel-on-rebel clashes have killed nearly 700 people in the deadliest bout of infighting since the civil war began.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry joined 10 other foreign ministers who urged coalition President Ahmed al-Jarba to deliver his group to the Switzerland talks and finally meet face-to-face with the government it hopes to overthrow. Kerry said he was confident the coalition would be at the talks, and hinted at a diplomatic backlash from its allies if it skips the meetings.

Egyptian students fight security forces CAIRO – Hundreds of students supporting Egypt’s ousted president battled security forces Sunday at three Cairo universities, two days before a referendum that officials say will be protected by a massive deployment of soldiers and police.

The clashes came as Egypt’s Interim President Adly Mansour urged voters to head to the polls to cast ballots Tuesday and Wednesday on the draft constitution. Mansour said that the draft charter used “moderate” Islam as a base for legislation. He also asked voters “to lead the ship of the nation to the shores of safety.”

Loss of jobless aid leaves many with bleak options

By JOSH BOAK and SAM HANANEL The Associated Press WASHINGTON – A cutoff of benefits for the long-term unemployed has left more than 1.3 million Americans with a stressful decision: What now?

Without their unemployment checks, many will abandon what had been a futile search and will no longer look for a job – an exodus that could dwarf the 347,000 Americans who stopped seeking work in December. Beneficiaries have been required to look for work to receive unemployment checks.

Some who lost their benefits say they’ll begin an early and unplanned retirement. Others will pile on debt to pay for school and an eventual second career. Many will likely lean on family, friends and other government programs to get by.

They’re people like Stan Osnowitz, a 67-year-old electrician in Baltimore who lost his state unemployment benefits of $430 a week. The money put gasoline in his car to help him look for work.

Osnowitz said a continuation of his benefits would have enabled his job search to continue into spring, when construction activity usually increases and more electrical jobs become available.

He said he’s sought lowpaid work at stores such as Lowe’s or Home Depot.

But he acknowledges that at his age, the prospect of a minimum-wage job is depressing.

“I have two choices,” Osnowitz said. “I can take a job at McDonald’s or something and give up everything I’ve studied and everything I’ve worked for

and all the experience that I have. Or I can go to retirement.”

Unemployment benefits were extended as a federal emergency move during the 2008 financial crisis at a time of rising unemployment. The benefits have gone to millions who had exhausted their regular state unemployment checks, typically after six months. Last month, the extended-benefits program was allowed to expire, a casualty of deficit-minded lawmakers who argue that the government can’t afford to fund it indefinitely and that unemployment benefits do little to put people back to work.

The duration of the federal benefits has varied from state to state up to 47 weeks. As a result, the long-term unemployed in Rhode Island, for example, could receive a total of 73 weeks – 26 weeks of regular benefits, plus 47 weeks from the now-expired federal program.

Outside Cincinnati, Tammy Blevins, 57, fears that welfare is her next step. She was let go as a machine operator at a printing plant in May. Her unemployment check and a small inheritance from her father helped cover her $1,000-a-month mortgage and $650 health insurance premium. Now, with her benefits cut off and few openings in manufacturing, she dreads what could be next.

“I’m going to have to try the welfare thing, I guess,” Blevins said. “I don’t know.

I’m lost.”

Others plan to switch careers. After being laid off last summer as a high school history teacher, Jada Urquhart enrolled at Ohio State University to become a social worker.

Without an unemployment check, she plans to max out her credit cards and take on student loans to complete her degree by 2015.

“I’ll be 60 when I graduate,” she said. “If I do oneon-one or family counseling, I can work forever.”

Urquhart finds herself in sympathy with members of Congress who want to limit government spend-

ing. At least in theory she does.

“It’s just hard when you’re the one getting shrunk,” she said.

One sign of the persistently tight job market: The percentage of Americans either working or looking for work has reached its lowest monthly level in nearly 36 years, the Labor Department said Friday. The unemployment rate fell in December to 6.7 percent from 7 percent. But that drop occurred mainly because more Americans

stopped looking for jobs, many of them out of frustration. Once people without jobs stop looking for one, the government no longer counts them as unemployed.

Because unemployment benefits require recipients to look for work, many who would have given up kept seeking a job. The federal benefits eased their financial hardship. But the fundamental problem goes beyond unemployment aid: A shortage of decent-paying jobs for those still coping with the aftermath of the Great Recession.

Jesse Rothstein, an economist at the University of California, Berkeley, who has studied the longterm unemployed, has found that extended benefits help both the recipients and the economy – by fueling consumer spending.

“A Band-Aid doesn’t heal a serious wound, but that isn’t much of a reason not to use one,” Rothstein said.

The trend of people ending their job hunts once their benefits expire has already emerged in North Carolina, which started cutting off aid in July.

North Carolina’s unemployment rate sank from 8.8 percent in June to 7.4 percent in November, but mainly because people stopped their job searches.

But some congressional Republicans argue that guaranteed unemployment checks that go on for more than a year lead many workers to take excessive time to try to land an ideal job, instead of settling for whatever they can find.

Senate Democrats and President Barack Obama have pushed to restore the program. But they need to agree on how to pay for it – a key demand from Republicans concerned about

a potential $20 billion hit to the federal budget deficit.

The longer people remain jobless, the more likely their skills are to erode and the more likely employers are to ignore their resumes, according to economic research. The result is that many eventually stop looking for work and turn instead to other government programs such as Social Security Disability Insurance.

“If those workers don’t ever get back, they’re not going to be earning income, they’re not going to be paying taxes,” says Josh Mitchell, an economic researcher at the Urban Institute.

Compared with people who’ve been out of work for weeks, the long-term unemployed tend to be older and more concentrated in manufacturing and construction, according to research by Mitchell.

A majority of the longterm unemployed have children. An increasing share – 28.6 percent vs. 24.2 percent in 2007 – attended college but didn’t receive a degree. And most live in the South and West, where the housing bust that sparked the recession was most intense.

About 38 percent of all unemployed workers – or 3.9 million – have been out of a job six months or more. That’s nearly double the proportion it was when Congress previously ended emergency benefits in 2003 and in 1994, notes Heidi Shierholz, an economist at the liberal-leaning Economic Policy Institute.

But many workers say they would rather have jobs than more benefits.

“It’s just been a struggle forever,” said Blevins, the laid-off machine operator.

“I don’t want nothing for free.”

Closing Chicago canal is still the best option The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it will take years and cost a ton of money to re-create the natural barrier that once existed between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basin.

Even if the Army Corps has overestimated the cost, as some critics are arguing, it still will be an expensive project, ranging into the billions of dollars. That doesn’t make separation not worth doing.

Unless there’s a proven option out there that will keep invasive species from moving between the two water systems, separation is still the best answer.

After seven years of study and $25 million, the Army Corps recently released a plan with eight options for dealing with invasive species moving from one basin to another.

The poster fish for this effort is, of

course, the Asian carp, which has been swarming up the Mississippi system for years, wreaking havoc on local habitats and native fish.

The initial short-term plan to keep the large jumping fish out of the Great Lakes relied on an electric barrier in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. The canal is the connecting link between the systems, built more than a century ago to keep Chicago’s wastewater out of Lake Michigan and sending it toward the Mississippi River. But in addition to fouling the waters south and west of Chicago, the canal threatens to become a highway for species such as the Asian carp. The only sure way to close that highway for the carp is to close the canal to all traffic by building a physical barrier.

Creating that barrier could cost between $15.5 billion and $18 billion,

the Army Corps says and could take 25 years to build. Part of the reason for that is the massive amount of work needed to retool Chicago’s sanitary and storm water sewer systems, as the Journal Sentinel’s Dan Egan noted in a Tuesday article.

Right now, Chicago sewage plant discharges, among the filthiest in the nation, Egan reports, flow into the canals and away from Lake Michigan.

Separation would send those discharges, along with storm water and sewer overflows, into Lake Michigan.

And that requires expensive and serious upgrades in sewage treatment as well as construction of new reservoirs and tunnels to transport and capture storm-driven sewer overflows so they could be treated before being discharged into the lake.

Joliet Catholic’s Lumpkin shooting for All American nod

By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The holidays have been very kind to Joliet Catholic senior forward Jasmine Lumpkin.

During the annual two-week break from classes, the 6-foot Lumpkin’s 15 point average in four games aided the Angel’s championship run through the Hillcrest Holiday Classic. She saved her best for last, scoring 21 points in the title tilt, a 7760 win over Bolingbrook on Dec. 28.

The Joliet Catholic (140, 3-0) girls followed up their banner performance with three consecutive conference victories over Providence on Jan. 4, Benet on Wednesday and Carmel on Thursday.

As the unbeaten Angels continue East Suburban Catholic Conference play, vying for a top seed in February’s 3A playoffs, Lumpkin was notified Tuesday by head coach Ed Schodrof she is nominated for the 2014 McDonald’s All American Games.

“It’s such a blessing and an honor to be named a McDonald’s All American finalists,” Lumpkin said.

“I was really surprised because I had no clue about the nomination until coach Schodrof texted me on Tuesday morning. It was a really nice wake-up call.”

A Michigan State commit and a Bolingbrook resident, Lumpkin is one of 13 Illinois seniors – nine boys and four girls – to receive the honor. She is now eligible to make the final team of 24 boys and 24 girls, which will be announced at 5 p.m. Jan. 29 on ESPNU. About 1,000 players from 44 states and the District of Columbia were

Last season, Lumpkin averaged a double-double (19 points, 13 rebounds) and powered Joliet Catholic to its first regional title since 2006.

With a loaded Angels 2013-14 roster – including starting freshman forwards Ty Battle and Jnaya Walker as well as standout sophomore guard Nicole Ekhomu – Lumpkin is scoring at an 18-points-per game clip and believes this Joliet Catholic team can make a deep playoff run.

Wrestler sets eyes on state title

By T.G. SMITH tsmith@shawmedia.com According to Illinois Matmen, Morris 132-pound wrestler Kenny Baldridge is ranked No. 2 in the state in his weight class.

“I think it’s a fair assessment. I think he should be No. 1, but we’re going to find that out real soon,” Morris coach Jon Lanning said about the rankings. “Besides, the rankings don’t mean a whole lot until you get to the state tournament. It’s all about where you are on that podium at the end of the year.”

Rockford Boylan’s Alex Butler is currently No. 1, even though Baldridge has wrestled – and beaten – him before. Baldridge recently came away from a tournament in Metamora in which he beat the No. 3 ranked wrestler in Class 2A in Casey McWhirter of East Peoria.

“He’s 19-0 this year and pretty much dominated all of his matches,” Lanning said last week. “In Metamora, he had a tough match in the finals. He wrestled the kid from East Peoria, the McWhirter kid, and beat him 5-1, but I thought he handled him pretty well. He controlled the match. It was a smart match. It was good for him because he was pushed that match.”

Baldridge said he went into the McWhirter match to simply learn.

“I knew [McWhirter] was a good kid because I had seen him in the offseason when we were wrestling, so I knew that he was pretty good,” Baldridge said. “He’s ranked No. 3

“I’m really comfortable with where I am at. I lifted all summer and wrestled 132 all summer and made sure to wrestle in that weight class.”

Basically, I was just trying to figure out how he was going to wrestle that way I know how to wrestle him on the way down to state.”

Last season Baldridge finished fourth in Class 2A at 120 pounds, but he’s spent a great deal of time during the offseason to get to his current weight.

“He works hard in the weight room in the offseason. That was one of the goals for him. Besides, if he is going to go to the next level and wrestle in college, he’ll probably end up a 133-pounder anyway,” Lanning said. “So he felt coming in that if he was going to wrestle in college at 133 pounds that he had to be a 132-pounder this year.

He said all year that he wasn’t going to be jumping or dodging around. He’s at 132 and willing to take on any takers. He’s basically said, ‘Come get me at 132.’ ” Baldridge is particularly pleased to be in that weight division despite bumping up two classes from his junior year.

Morris senior wrestler Kenny Baldridge has bulked up from his wrestling weight of 120 from a year ago to 132 this season. Baldridge is looking for a return trip to state.

“I’m really comfortable with where I am at,” Baldridge said. “I lifted all summer and wrestled 132 all summer and made sure to wrestle in that weight class. I wanted to be sure that it was the right weight class before I chose it. I’m really glad that I chose the weight class that I did.”

Lanning said he likes what he has seen in terms of form and fitness from

his senior.

“He’s exactly where I want him to be. He’s really made those little, small improvements that he’s needed to make,” he said.

“The biggest thing he’s improved on from last year that kept him out of the state finals is his reshots.

He’s recognizing that now, seeing it and scoring with it consistently.

he hit a beautiful one and I screamed all the way across the room, ‘That’s exactly how you do it.’ And he did it against Trevor [Allbert], a guy who is 30 pounds bigger than he is.”

All in a day’s work.

“I feel like I am doing pretty well. I’m just doing what I have to do to be ready for the state series,” he said. “I’m pretty excited. I’ve been training

real hard lately. Practicing a lot and getting my cardio down. Trying to stay healthy and keep my weight down.”

And the reshots?

“I’ve been working on that more,” Baldridge said.

“That gives me more time to take a person down. …

It gives me another chance to shoot back in.”

Apparently, Baldridge is right on track for another chance at the top prize available next month at state in Champaign’s Assembly Hall.

“He needs to continue wrestling hard and to wrestle his match,” Lanning said. “He knows how to compete – he does that.

He’s wrestling at 100 percent right now. Not only that but he’s focused and poised. We think he’s going to make a run at that state tournament and hopefully end up at the top of the podium this year.”

Baldridge said he’s eager to get back down to Champaign to apply what he learned last year at the state tournament.

“Last year I learned that I need to learn to slow down my pace,” Baldridge said. “That I need to block my shots a little bit better because I’m going to need that when I get down to the state series again. I’m going to need to do that if I am going to get through this year.”

He’s already up on the wall of the wrestling room as a state qualifier and placer. Still, it doesn’t seem like it would be enough to simply pull off that feat again.

“Nah, I’m looking for the championship,” he said.

49ers just too good for Panthers CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The San Francisco 49ers’ 23-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers in Sunday’s NFC divisional playoff game wasn’t quite the edge-of-your-seat thriller some expected, and it had little to do with the meeting between ex-teammates and the prized fruit of the Mike Ditka coaching tree – Jim Harbaugh and Ron Rivera.

This one was about a clearly better 49ers squad teaching a bit of a lesson to the not-ready-for-primetime Panthers. Both sides did try to make it the bare-knuckle brawl everyone expected, and the game also featured as much jawing, pushing, shoving and chirpiness as any game this season.

Afterward, NaVorro Bowman – one of the heroes of the game for the 49ers with 11 tackles, one sack and two tackles for loss – told me, “It was as much talking as I’ve ever heard on the field. It was two really good teams trying to get in the other one’s heads as much as possible and we were able to make more plays.”

Bowman was right. Statistically, this one produced more offense than the Panthers’ 10-9 victory in San Francisco in Week 10. But the numbers made it look almost like a dead heat. Carolina outgained the 49ers 325-315 in total yards and had a 10-second advantage in time of possession at 30:05. But the 49ers were plus-2 in the turnover department and had the play-makers while the Panthers couldn’t find a difference-maker other than Steve Smith, whose 31yard touchdown catch from Cam Newton after a 26-yard Ted Ginn, Jr.

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush punt return gave the Panthers their only lead of the game at 10-6 in the second quarter. Smith, however, was targeted only once more with about six minutes left in the first half and then was neutralized by the 49ers’ defense the rest of the game.

The lead held up until 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick found Vernon Davis in the back corner of the end zone with a 1-yard TD toss with five seconds left in the first half.

It was ruled no catch on the field but replay showed Davis had dragged his left toe just before stepping out of bounds, and the 49ers went to the lockerroom with a 13-10 lead at the half.

Davis’ TD catch was his seventh in the playoffs, tying him for the all-time NFL record for TD catches by a tight end in the postseason. When I asked Davis what the record meant to him, he told me, “Honestly, I wasn’t aware of that and I’m kind of speechless and overwhelmed. What matters now is we have a chance to do something bigger next weekend and I’m sure the record will sink in eventually.”

In addition to Bowman and Davis, Ahmad Brooks (2½ sacks) and Patrick Willis (11 tackles and an interception) came up with huge stops for the 49ers.

Tolbert to a combined 13 carries for 33 yards while Frank Gore and Anquan Boldin were the difference for the 49ers on offense.

Gore rushed for 84 yards on 17 carries, including a 39-yard second-half run that set up the 49ers’ last score and all but put the game away.

Boldin paced the passing game with eight catches for 136 yards, and was in the middle of a lot of the jawing that went on all afternoon.

The other big difference in the game was eight Panthers penalties for 73 yards that gave the 49ers’ offense a number of second chances after seemingly being stopped.

In the locker room after the game, I asked Harbaugh what the difference was and he complimented his friend Rivera and said, “We just had a few more guys who knew how to get it done.”

Harbaugh also told me his grandfather had passed away Sunday morning, a fact that for the most part had been kept quiet all day out of respect for his parents and family.

“Its OK, though, I know he watched the game in heaven and has a huge smile on his face right now.”

It’s hard to imagine that smile could have been any bigger than the one the victorious coach was wearing as he began to think about his trip to Seattle next weekend with his second Super Bowl in two years now just one win away.

Blackhawks end three game losing streak

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com Patrick Kane, standing below his own goal line on a power play, wheeled the puck around the boards to a point man that wasn’t there, and then could only watch helplessly as the puck skittered all the way down the ice toward the Blackhawks’ empty net, vacated earlier by Antti Raanta for an extra attacker on a delayed penalty call.

Kane leaned to his left, trying to coax the insolent puck wide with a little body English. Then he leaned harder. Then he smacked himself on the forehead when he realized what was about to happen.

Kane scored. From about 195 feet away. On his own net.

That the bizarre goal ended up a slapstick footnote in Sunday night’s game and not the latest anvil to fall on the Hawks’ head was good a sign as any that the Edmonton Oilers were just what the Hawks needed to snap out of their recent funk. The Hawks dispatched the Oilers 5-3 to end a three-game losing streak in which they had scored a total of five goals.

Father Time gaining edge on Peppers BEARS INSIDER Tom Musick By this time next week, Julius Peppers will be 34 years old.

Thirty-four.

In the real world, it’s no big deal to be 34. You’ve escaped the angst of your teens and the turbulence of your 20s. Maybe you’re married. Maybe you have kids. Maybe you’ve earned a promotion. Maybe you’ve changed careers.

But we all know that the NFL is not the real world.

In the NFL, players in their mid-30s might as well be dinosaurs. They tend to fall into three categories: Quarterbacks (see: Tom Brady, Peyton Manning),

specialists (see: Adam Vinatieri, Patrick Mannelly) and breaking down position players.

Peppers isn’t a quarterback or a specialist.

The Bears have a tough decision to make this winter regarding Peppers’ future. General manager Phil Emery must decide whether he thinks the eight-time Pro Bowl defensive end can bounce back from an inconsistent season to merit a salary-cap hit in the neighborhood of $18 million.

Perhaps the Bears could try to restructure Peppers’ deal for the second straight season. Or perhaps they could cut Peppers with two years remaining on his deal.

Then again, the Bears could try to squeeze at

least one more season out of Peppers under his current deal, hoping he has more success at age 34 than did Brian Urlacher.

Emery, as always, has remained tight-lipped about his plan.

First, the Bears must decide whether to retain defensive coordinator Mel Tucker. Then, they must determine whether to preserve a 4-3 defensive scheme, switch to a 3-4 scheme or implement some sort of in-between, hybrid option.

And then comes Peppers’ contract, which could affect other free-agent signings.

“I’m not going to get into contracts,” Emery said this month when Peppers’ name came up at the Bears’ season-ending news

conference. “He’s under contract.

“Julius had an 8-8 year, like all of us, like I did, and that’s where he’s at.”

Peppers is paid to have 13-3 years, not 8-8 years.

But Emery was careful to point out that an “8-8 year” did not mean that Peppers had become an average player.

“I didn’t say he was an 8-8 defensive end,” Emery said. “I said he had an 8-8 season, to correct that.

That’s a whole lot different.

“Obviously, Julius had a lot of good games like a lot of our players, and he had games that he would want back, and I think Julius would say that, too.

We will work through each and every player on our squad and to determine

where we’re going with him in the future, and that process is going to take time.”

Peppers’ time as a dominant player might have run out.

Twelve years ago, he entered the NFL as a 22-yearold and registered a dozen sacks as a rookie with the Carolina Panthers. He enjoyed eight seasons with double-digit sacks between 2002 and 2012, adding 37 forced fumbles during that span.

But Peppers’ production plunged in 2013. He finished the season with 7½ sacks and two forced fumbles, and his 19 quarterback pressures were only one more than embattled teammate Shea McClellin, whose future likely is at another position.

Help running low at Will County Humane Society More information

BARAN–UNLAND The Herald-News Correspondent It’s a regular and dedicated volunteer crew that make the difference in the lives of cats such as Frosty, a young cat that the niece of Joyce Drzal of Rockdale, volunteer coordinator at the Will County Humane Society in Shorewood, recently found on a brutally cold night.

Unfortunately, while the shelter, Frosty’s temporary home, is full with nearly 100 cats and 40 dogs, volunteers to care for those animals are running low, Drzal said, so she is appealing to the community for help.

Previous interaction with animals is not a requirement. All volunteers are trained, even if one has always owned pets, said Dave Horkey of Joliet, vice president of the shelter’s board of directors and Sunday’s volunteer coordinator. That’s because caring for the needs of a shelter animal is not the same as caring for the needs of companion animals.

“All you need is a desire to volunteer and we will provide the guidance,” said Horkey, who began volunteering in 2008 as a dog walker. “All we ask is that you adhere to that guidance.”

Aren’t fond of interacting with animals? One may still get involved through such areas as fundraising and public relations and working adoption events and as an adoption counselor, Horkey said.

You can even grow with the organization.”

Horkey cited several reasons for the ebb and flow in volunteer numbers. True, they often rise in good weather but they also drop in the summer when student volunteers no longer need community service hours for school, Horkey said.

He doesn’t wish to discourage young people from volunteering – youth

13 through 16 need a parent to volunteer with them – but added it’s time consuming to train a young person for a job when that person only needs to fulfill three hours of community service.

“We’re looking for people willing to spend time on a regular basis,” Horkey said. “Let me be clear, though. Nobody has to come in five days a week or anything like that. Just pick a day and start volunteering. If you can’t make it on a particular week, that’s not a problem.”

For those desiring a personal connection with these cats and dogs, the biggest need occurs when

the shelter is closed to the public: Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings, Saturday mornings and Sundays, Horkey said.

During those times, cats still need fresh food, water, litter and brushing. In addition to meals and grooming, dogs also require outdoor exercise.

This increases their adoptability, Horkey said, by releasing pent-up energy before prospective owners view and play with them.

“I had one dog walker show up on Sunday,” Horkey said, “and we have 35 dogs.”

Less volunteers means less one-on-one quality time for the animals. This

also means some animals may not receive proper socialization, as necessary as to their future status as household pets. Former household pets may be depressed, Horkey said, and many of these cats and dogs have never lived in a home.

“Some dogs have never been around people or walked on a leash,” Horkey said. “We train our volunteers how to stay safe while walking a dog and how to keep a safe distance from the other walkers. Some dogs have recently had surgery and can’t be walked. We’re there to provide guidance and education and we set

clear boundaries on how to interact with the animals.”

The fear of seeing all the sad little faces and wanting to take each cat and dog home prevents some individuals from donating their time but experienced volunteers express the opposite, Horkey said.

“You end up feeling more joy when the pets find their forever home,” Horkey said.

Still, in a pinch, Drzal is amazed at how the shelter’s current volunteers band together to solve a problem.

“Last Monday when it was so cold, one of the regulars couldn’t make it,” Drzal said. “So I sent an email to see if we could get some help because that left only one person in the cat room. They came through.”

Millions of animals need help during freeze

As a fierce freeze gripped much of the country, animal lovers were rushing to protect pets, livestock and police dogs from historically icy temperatures that have led to deaths, transit shutdowns and school closures.

The blast of polar air breaking records in the Midwest, East and South sent shelters and pet owners scrambling to keep sensitive paws and wet noses warm.

Veterinarians say the smaller the animal, the higher the risk of freezing to death. In dogs and cats, shivering and lethargy are the first two signs of trouble.

“The smaller you are, the more body surface you have, and the quicker you will lose body heat,” said Dr. Douglas G. Aspros, immediate past president of the Illinois-based American Veterinary Medical Association.

Subzero wind chills have been widely registered, and Aspros, who has offices in White Plains and Pound Ridge, N.Y., says they are a big factor because wind strips heat from pets faster.

Many animals will be comfortable if they’re moving but get cold when they slow down, said Dr. Brian Collins of the small animal clinic at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in Ithaca, N.Y. “They may refuse to walk because their feet are so cold,” he said. “They might alternate picking up their feet because they don’t want to leave them down too long. I have seen little dogs just fall over.

They will pick up one, two and three feet and fall right over.”

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s dogs still are on patrol with their handlers, but they aren’t being deployed for extended outdoor searches, Lt. Benny Diggs said.

All dogs are different, but a K-9 might be able to search for only 15 or 20 minutes in deep snow before showing signs of trauma to the legs, he said. Ice under

snow can cut their feet and salt in wounds is painful.

“We haven’t had anything like this in forever.

You can’t even put chemicals down because they just freeze,” Diggs said.

Cats probably are the most resourceful animals in the cold, and feral cats are particularly hardy because they are so used to the outdoors, said Becky Robinson, president and founder of Alley Cat Allies in Baltimore.

But in this kind of

weather, a helping hand could save a lot of lives, she said.

She said Samaritans have been making cheap, outdoor shelters with plastic tubs or foam coolers set off the ground and lined with straw. Blankets gather moisture, she said, and will freeze, so they use straw.

She recommends putting water in plastic, rather than metal, bowls, with a pinch of sugar because it doesn’t freeze as quickly, she said. It still has to be re-

freshed often, though.

The vets warned drivers to check before starting cars because cats, domestic and feral, are drawn to warm engines and car hoods. An open clothes dryer is a warm spot that could lure an indoor cat, so keep the door shut.

Livestock will head for the barn when cold.

At the 175-acre Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, all 640 horses, cows, sheep and goats were given shelter from the cold and snow, national shelter director Susie Coston said.

That includes Ormsby, locked up for his own good.

Ormsby and at least 25 of the calves, sheep and other old goats are wearing coats specially made for them by a volunteer.

Chickens are susceptible to frostbite on their wattles and combs, Coston said, so they are covered with Vaseline.

At Dr. Caroline Flower’s office in Chester, Conn., every dog through the door has been wearing a coat this week. Receptionist-technician Cathy Troncoso said her dogs would be wearing them too, but they don’t make the outerwear big enough to fit her two 125-pound Pyrenees dogs.

The cold forced colleague Ashley Bogert to move her backyard rabbit, Mr. Bun-Buns, into her bathroom. “He loves it,” she said, but she’s looking forward to getting the room back to herself.

Dr. Jeff Werber in balmy Southern California offered a few tips for helping pets destress after being cooped up indoors for a week – pheromone collars or a natural calming herb like California poppy, Valerian root, passion flower or chamomile.

To start this week, for a change of pace, let’s have some golf trivia questions. First, how far did the longest drive go on the PGA tour last year?

Having been asked that question, you are probably expecting today’s deal to be a grand slam, the longest drive in bridge. Instead, though, here is a small slam. However, if you played it during a tournament and went down, it would make the drive home feel very long.

South is in six spades. West leads the diamond two. How should declarer plan the play?

South had a textbook three-spade opening: a good seven-card suit and some 6-10 high-card points. North used Blackwood, hoping his partner had the spade ace and a minor-suit king, which would probably have made seven no-trump laydown. When South denied an ace, though, North had to be content with six spades. (Yes, he should have signed off in six no-trump, to avoid a potentially fatal minor-suit lead. But that would have ruined the story.)

The careless declarer would win the first trick and immediately play a trump. But East would win with his ace and give West a diamond ruff.

Leading a low card usually guarantees at least one honor in that suit. South, though, can see all five diamond honors. So, he should fear that the lead is a singleton.

Before playing a trump, declarer should cash dummy’s top hearts and discard his remaining diamond. Then he can lead a trump and claim shortly thereafter.

Phil Mickelson hit the longest drive at 450 yards. His ball rolled a long way down a cart path.

Reformed bully regrets pain she caused others Dear Abby: You said in your Nov. 14 column on bullying that you hadn’t received a single letter from anyone who had bullied others. Well, I was a bully.

As a young girl I’d tease and taunt, and when I was older I used sarcasm as a way to bully. I was involved in an abusive relationship in my 20s.

With support and counseling, I was able to stop being abused and being abusive.

I learned the feelings I had repressed – shame, fear and low selfworth from a childhood of sexual and physical abuse – were misdirected at the people around me instead of at my abuser, my father, as they should have been.

I’m not saying this is an excuse for the hurt I inflicted on others, but for me there was a correlation.

I’m now in a loving and supportive relationship. We have raised our children to be kind, thoughtful and confident individuals.

I’m involved with an organization supporting nonprofit programs in our community that empower abused children, reach out to the sexually exploited and help women experiencing domestic violence.

I hope the people I hurt have forgiven me and have been able to move forward. But I will never know for sure.

Factors can affect sense of taste Dear Dr. K: I’ve lost my sense of taste within the past few months. I take medicine for high blood pressure – could that be the reason?

Dear Reader: It could be, but there are other possibilities.

What we call “taste” is actually a combination of the sensations from the taste buds on our tongue and the smell centers in our nose. Taste also involves nerves in the tongue that sense the texture of food we are eating.

The taste receptors on our tongue pick up five different types of taste.

They identify what is salty, sweet, sour or bitter. There’s also a fifth taste, called “umami,” which is best described as a “meaty” taste.

As we get older, most of us lose some sense of smell and taste. This usually starts after about age 60. I don’t know your age, but perhaps that’s a part of what’s happening to you.

People with high blood pressure are more likely to lose their sense of taste and smell. It’s not clear whether this is related to high blood pressure itself or to the drugs used to treat it.

That said, certain types of high

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff blood pressure drugs have been reported to cause loss of taste. These include diuretics, which help the kidneys eliminate sodium and water from the body. ACE inhibitors also may cause loss of taste.

If your loss of taste is related to one of your blood pressure pills, it’s probably reversible. But don’t stop taking any medications until you talk with your doctor. He or she might suggest switching to a different class of drugs or taking other steps. If your mouth is dry from diuretics, for example, you might try sipping water between bites. Sometimes the moisture can help make food more flavorful.

However, rather than assume your loss of taste is due to age or blood pressure, let’s consider some other possible explanations. Since your sense of smell also affects taste, it’s not surprising conditions that affect your nose could reduce your sense of taste. Perhaps your nasal passages are

blocked by: • Allergies • Secondhand smoke or other irritants • A persistent sinus infection • Polyps in the nose Sometimes people temporarily lose their sense of smell after an upper respiratory tract infection.

Based on personal experience, I suspect there are certain kinds of viral infections that can directly affect the nose and sense of smell. When I was a teenager, I was very sick for about a week with what the doctor called a viral infection. I recovered completely – except my sense of smell and taste has not been as good since.

I’ve seen patients with a similar experience.

One benefit I’ve found from having a reduced sense of taste and smell is I cannot appreciate the pleasures of fancy meals and wines that delight many of my friends. That’s one less thing to spend money on.

Clinton Street Joliet, IL 60432 815-774-3364 REQUEST FOR RELEASE OF FUNDS On or about January 31, 2014 the Will County Land Use Department, Community Development Division (CDD) will submit a request to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the release of Community Development Block Grant Funds under Title I of the Housing and Community Development Act, as amended, to undertake a project known as the Lockport Heights Water Main Replacement, for the purpose of replacing water mains in the Lockport Heights subdivision along Smith Road and 146th Place. The estimated cost of this activity is $430,000.

FINDING OF NO SIGNIFICANT IMPACT The CDD has determined that the project will have no significant impact on the human environment. Therefore, an Environmental Impact Statement under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) is not required. RELEASE OF FUNDS The CDD certifies to HUD that Lawrence M. HUD's approval of the certification satisfies its responsibilities under NEPA and related laws and authorities, and allows Will County, Illinois CDD to use Program funds.

OBJECTIONS TO RELEASE OF FUNDS HUD will consider objections to its release of funds and the CDD's certification received by February 15, 2014 or a period of fifteen days from its receipt of the request (whichever is later) only if they are on one of the following bases: (a) the certification was not executed by the Certifying Officer or other officer of the Will County, Illinois approved by HUD); (b) the CDD has omitted a step or failed to make a decision or finding required by HUD regulations at 24 CFR Part 58; (c) the grant recipient or other participants in the project have committed funds or incurred costs not authorized by 24 CFR Part 58 before approval of a release of funds by HUD; or (d) another Federal agency acting pursuant to 40 CFR Part 1504 has submitted a written finding that the project is unsatisfactory from the standpoint of environmental quality.
