Grain elevator – Mokena In 1842, the first grain elevator was constructed in Buffalo, N.Y., by retail merchant Joseph Dart.

Dart’s invention consisted of a wooden structure that served as storage bins for grain. Loading the grain into this structure was a steam-driven belt which had buckets attached to it. As the belt with buckets was lowered into the hold of a ship, the buckets would scoop up the grain and hoist it up into the structure where it was dropped into tall bins. This is where the term “elevator” originated because this is exactly what the process did.

It elevated the grain from the ship and stored it in bins until it was lowered for transport or for milling purposes.

Dart and others soon discovered the elevator’s bins kept grain dry, cool and free from pests, which could destroy the entire load. The elevators also made it possible to weigh the grain as it was being stored and test for purity and contaminants.

Soon, the grain elevator system evolved and became an important part of Chicago’s growth in the 19th century.

As the railroads expanded throughout the mid-west, farmers were able to get their crops from the prairies to the marketplace more quickly and efficiently. The grain elevator soon became part of a new supply chain of industrialized agriculture, which was made possible by the McCormick reaper and the standardized system of grading wheat introduced by the Chicago Board of Trade in 1857. This system

allowed crops of similar quality from a variety of different farmers to be combined by grading for shipping, storage and trading.

Cold temperatures perfect for Musher Mania

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com MONEE – The thermometer didn’t reach 20 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday and the wind picked up in the open space around the Monee Reservoir.

But the cold weather was good as far as dog sledding fans were concerned. In the 20 years of Musher Mania, warmer temperatures have turned any snow on the ground to ... well, mush.

“Last year was slushy and mushy. The year before that it reached 55 degrees and there was just mud everywhere. Nobody liked that,” said Erin Ecker, an interpretative specialist for the Will County Forest Preserve.

Almost 700 people attended the first Musher Mania in January 1995 and the same number attended Saturday’s event, forest preserve spokes-

woman Cindy Cain said.

Musher Mania 21 started at noon when Team Snow Quest made the first run.

Theresa Przybylski said sunny but cold conditions made it perfect for her other team members – Siberian huskies Cruiser, Mandy, Denali and Shelby.

Cruiser is 9, Mandy is 6 and their daughters are 3.

“The team name is because we’re always in a quest for snow. Snow is better than ice,” Przybylski said.

Przybylski has been dog sledding for 21 years “just for fun.” She takes her dogs out a couple times each week for training and conditioning.

“Weather is the biggest factor for these events. Cold is better for the dogs to run in,” she said. The dogs have more energy working in cold air and don’t overheat from their heavy coats, Przybylski said.

The dog teams were brought by members of the Siberian Husky Club of Greater Chicago. Children could decorate different colored flags to wave while teams such as Snow Quest, Siberpaw Siberians and Royal Court ran the track.

When they weren’t harnessed for demonstrations, the dogs rested on straw as people petted them and took photos.

“I’m just a huge fan of all dogs,” said Samantha Carbone of Shorewood. “I like watching the teams sled because this is the only place I’m going to see it unless I take a trip to Alaska.”

Near the spot Carbone picked to watch the dog runs, a placard noted “Mush” came from the French command for march, but is rarely used by the modern sled driver.

Cain said Musher Mania educates people about huskies and dog sledding while showing the reservoir preserve is accessible year-round. While the trails are only set up as a mini-Iditarod for Saturday’s demonstrations, snowshoe rental is available throughout the winter.

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The University of St. Francis will rename one of its downtown locations after receiving a six-figure donation.

The former Mode theater building – renovated into a new USF building last year – will be named the Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise Center, following a donation gift from the Robert W. Plaster Foundation.

USF Spokeswoman Nancy Poehlman declined to reveal the amount of the donation.

USF officials said the building is named in honor of Plaster, a philanthropist and entrepreneur who led his own start-up business, Empire Gas Corporation in 1963. Empire Gas became one of the largest retail LP gas distributors in the U.S. “The educational experience of USF students is very much aligned with the values of Robert W. Plaster. As Mr. Plaster understood and valued hard work and education as the key to success, so too do [USF] students and faculty,” USF President Arvid Johnson said in a news release from the university.

Missouri. The foundation’s mission is to promote “expanded educational opportunities, pride in America and belief in the free enterprise system,” to benefit youth through capital projects, according to its website.

Dolly Clement, Plaster’s daughter and the foundation’s

executive director, said her father wanted to open educational opportunities for young people. “[The foundation] is dedicated to helping students by funding projects for colleges and universities, such as this University of St. Francis enterprise, the former Mode Theater

Building, now a state-of-the-art learning environment,” she said in the news release.

The foundation also gave a seven-figure gift to Ozarks Technical Community College in Missouri that led to the creation of the Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise Center in 2011.

USF opened the former

Mode Theater building in August after renovating it for $2.7 million. The 18,000-square foot building, at 16-18 W. Van Buren St., was donated to USF by BMO Harris Bank.

Several university programs and the College of Arts & Science are located at the building.

The building also includes classrooms, mock trial courtrooms, study and leisure space, computer labs and offices. It also houses a business incubator that will support undergraduate and graduate entrepreneurship degree programs, USF officials said.

Plainfield electronics recycler acquired by Finnish firm

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – It’ll be business as usual, at least for some time, at the Romeoville-based Vintage Tech Recycling after last month’s acquisition by Finland-based Kuusakoski, according to the company’s president and CEO, Richard Hipp.

Vintage Tech is the electronics recycling vendor for Will County and will continue that role, Hipp said.

Kuusakoski has a U.S. headquarters in Plainfield.

“The two organizations

have had a joint venture partnership for some time,” Hipp said Thursday. “Kuusakoski is a 100-year-old company that’s been involved in recycling of materials and the design and manufacturing of equipment that recycles those materials, whereas Vintage Tech is the customer service, the front-end of it, working with [manufacturers] coastto-coast.”

under Kuusakoski’s ownership, will remain Will County’s recycling vendor. But it’s unclear how proposed changes to a state law requiring manufacturers to pay for collecting and recycling certain devices will affect who pays for these programs statewide.

Under state law, manufacturers help pay for these programs by contracting with electronics recycling vendors.

But once they meet pre-established weight quotas, they no longer have to pay those companies to recycle items.

Manufacturers met those state-mandated goals about

halfway through 2014, meaning payments stopped and Vintage Tech ended up absorbing the costs.

Gibson was in negotiations last month with the county to ensure the company doesn’t absorb excess costs again.

Kuusakoski will take part in those discussions this year.

County officials hope to increase state-mandated goals amid fears that local governments will be burdened with recycling costs. Proposed changes have been met with opposition from representatives from the manufacturing industry.

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – Kristi Spengler of Frankfort proudly relates how her husband Erich Spengler saved the lives of two children.

One was a toddler who had jumped into a public pool. The other was a preschooler who had caught her head in a car window at an ice cream stand and was suffocating. Erich, Kristi said, broke the window.

“He was very outgoing with a big heart,” Kristi said, “the type that would do anything for anyone.”

But then, everything about Erich was about fostering new life and fresh opportunities. In his personal life, Erich and Kristi adopted two girls – Emily, 17, from Siberia and Lauren, 14, from Kazakhstan.

Today, Emily is a figure skater, outgoing and with great confidence, Kristi said.

Lauren and Erich “hung out together” and were “best buddies,” Kristi said.

“She called him her Prince Erich,” Kristi said.

In his professional life, Erich was no different. For more than 20 years, Erich was a professor of integrated technology at Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills. He also was a senior lecturer at Northwestern University in Evanston.

Since 2003, he served as

the director and principal investigator of the National Science Foundation Advanced Technology Education Center for Systems Security and Information Assurance at Moraine.

Mostly Erich worked with adults making career changes and was defined as that educator who made people’s lives better because of it, Kristi said. Erich, she added, put his “heart and soul” into that job.

“He was a great motiErich vator,” Kristi said. “He made Spengler everyone feel good about themselves.”

Kristi met Erich on a blind date when they were 19 and they immediately felt a connection. She loved his spontaneity and natural intelligence.

Kristi learned that Erich, by 12, was rebuilding car engines.

He could do the same with computers.

“He just loved hands-on things,” Kristi said. “He was just so smart and so well-rounded.”

Ironically, Erich’s high school job as a lifeguard may have contributed to a cancerous lesion – malignant melanoma – on his back 17 years ago. But Erich was lucky. The cancer was removed, and Erich had regular skin checkups every six months, Kristi said.

In the fall of 2012, Erich

experienced vague symptoms – fatigue, sweating, vomiting – so his doctor ordered a CT scan. Two days after Christmas, Erich learned the melanoma had never really gone away. The doctor gave him three to six months to live.

“It was all over his liver,” Kristi said.

But Erich fought back and submitted to a range of treatments, from the traditional to participating in clinical trials.

Kristi said Erich figured that, by trying them all, he would find a cure. Nothing worked.

But Erich continued to work during his two-year cancer battle. If he was too ill to commute, he Skyped with his students. In August, the day after he was discharged from the hospital, he flew with Kristi to Washington, D.C., for a cousin’s wedding.

About two weeks before Erich’s death Nov. 11 at age 48, Erich was helping one of his students at Northwestern finish his thesis, Kristi said.

“Erich had such a drive within him,” Kristi said. “He thought that, even when things get difficult, you keep moving forward, not just with your profession, but with everything in life. He never settled for second best.”

JOLIET – The Will County Coroner’s Office has identified the man police say was shot and hit by a car Saturday.

Michael C. Brock, 24, of Joliet was found dead in the 500 block of South Ottawa St. in Joliet. Police are investigating the death as a homicide, the Will County Coroner said Sunday.

On Saturday, Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said Brock was shot once and struck by a vehicle. According to police, a passerby found the body shortly after 8 a.m. in the alley behind the 500 block of South Ottawa

While everyone needs to take extra precautions during the cold winter months, senior citizens are especially vulnerable to the extreme cold that can lead to hypothermia and frostbite.

Hypothermia happens when body temperature drops too low. Older adults lose body heat faster than when they were young. A temperature colder than 95 degrees can lead to problems such as heart attack, kidney problems and liver damage.

My 80-year-old uncle Dick Granrath, who lives in the Milwaukee area, had a mild heart attack trying to get inside his home one night last year during the January deep freeze. He fell on his patio, breaking a small window on the door on his way down and badly cutting his hand.

No one was around to hear his cries of help. He dragged himself through the freezing snow and bitter winds, across an alley and through a yard, where a neighbor finally heard him. He was out in the freezing weather for a couple hours before he was discovered.

Although he had frostbite on his nose, fingers and knees, he survived and did not lose any fingers. The injury he received from the glass was severe and he lost a lot of blood.

Ironically, the cold temperature slowed the bleeding and vital systems, and may have saved his life.

His recovery from frostbite has been long and grueling, and his hands just don’t work the way they used to, putting a big crimp in his love of woodworking and tinkering in his garage. But he is lucky to be alive and we are grateful he is.

Minooka Police Chief Justin Meyer reiterates that seniors are more susceptible to hypothermia and frostbite, so they need to bundle up and cover all exposed body parts when they go out.

OBITUARIES SHIRLEY A. ARCHER Shirley A. Archer, nee Stocker, age 85, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2015, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet with family by her side.

Shirley is survived by her son, Mark (Lisa) Reinholtz; six grandchildren, Mark, Matthew, Justin, Leanna, Natalie, Jonathan; a brother, Donald (Elizabeth) Stocker; a sister, Bette (Frank) Vrtis; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

GERALD R. HERBST Gerald “Jerry” R. Herbst, age 80, passed away suddenly at his home on Tuesday, January 6, 2015.

Jerry was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He is cherished deeply by his family and friends. He was blessed with the gift of life with a liver transplant that he received on February 6, 1992 from his donor, Diane at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Organ donation was very important to Jerry and the entire family supports organ donation.

Jerry and Jean advocated organ donation by speaking at the Illinois Driver’s License Bureau, libraries and other events.

Born in Joliet, Jerry was a lifelong resident. A graduate of St. John Grade School, Joliet Catholic High School Class of 1952 and received his Masters Degree in Business from National Lewis University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956-58 and retired from Sherwin Williams in

1994 after 42 years. Jerry was an active member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Crest Hill. He loved the game of golf, he took pride in the appearance of his house and yard.

Truly a man of integrity and honor.

GERALD J. LINICH, SR. Gerald “Jerry” J. Linich, Sr., age 69, passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2015, at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

Graduated from St. Dennis Grade School and Lockport Central High School, Class of 1963. A member of the Lockport High School “Music Man Marching Band”. Attended Joliet Jr. College.

Joined the Army in 1965. Graduated from the Naval School of Music in Norfolk, VA. Served in Vietnam for one year, 1966 to 1967 with the 4th Infantry Division, first ones into Pleiku to set up base camp.

In between patrols and fighting, he and other musicians went to other base camps to entertain the troops. He also set up a movie theater for those at his camp to help relax and take their minds off the war.

Upon his return from Vietnam, he was stationed with the 1st U.S. Army 50th Army Band at Fort Monroe, Virginia. He attained the rank of SP5-E5. He was awarded the Good Conduct medal, National Defense Service medal, Vietnam Service medal with two bronze service stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal with one DEV 60.

Music was always a great part of his life. A true musician who played and taught trombone, played piano, composed and did music arrangements. For over 20 years, he had a 5-piece combo called “The Unlimited Sound”. He and his father started up the “Bill Gerald Orchestra”. Jerry was the director, played trombone and did music arrangements. The orchestra had 15-18 members. He and his father did this for over 20 years. They played throughout the Chicago area.

Employed with E.J. & E. Railroad in Joliet for over 16 years as the steel car shop supervisor; the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet for five years as the supervisor of maintenance during their renovation; Presence Villa Franciscan for over 14 years as activity specialist with the Alzheimer’s residents truly devoted to all of them.

Survived by his wife of more than 47 years, Judy (nee Knutson); one son, Gerald Jr. (Karen) of Aurora,

2 Tuskegee Airmen die at 91 on the same day The ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES – Two members of the Tuskegee Airmen – the famed all-black squadron that flew in World War II – died on the same day.

The men, lifelong friends who enlisted together, were 91.

Clarence E. Huntley Jr. and Joseph Shambrey died Jan. 5 in their Los Angeles homes, relatives said Sunday.

Huntley and Shambrey enlisted in 1942. They were shipped overseas to Italy in 1944 with the 100th Fighter Squadron of the Army Air Force’s 332nd Fighter Group.

As mechanics, they kept the combat planes flying.

Huntley serviced P-39, P-47 and P-51 aircraft, and as crew chief was responsible for the plane of the squadron commander, Capt. Andrew D. Turner, said Huntley’s nephew, Craig Huntly of Inglewood. “The life of his pilot was in his hands, and he took that very seriously,” his nephew said.

His concern led Turner to nickname him “Mother,” Huntly said.

In addition to facing danger, the Tuskegee Airmen

faced racism.

Shambrey’s son, Tim Shambrey of Altadena, said his father recalled getting off a train in Alabama where a hospitality station was welcoming returning white troops with handshakes and free coffee.

“When he and his buddies came off, dressed in their uniforms, of course they didn’t get any congratulations” and were asked to pay for their coffee, Shambrey said.

They did so.

“The thing about those men is that they were very proud” and decided not to make a fuss, Shambrey said.

“They were already used to so much discrimination.”

In later life, Shambrey didn’t talk much about his war service but he held barbecues that sometimes drew 150 people, including a lot of his old Army buddies, his son said.

Huntley also didn’t talk much with his family about the war, said his daughter, Shelia McGee of Los Angeles.

He told them: “I was doing what I was supposed to do, and that was to serve my country,” she said.

‘La Dolce Vita’ actress Anita Ekberg dies at 83

By COLLEEN BARRY and MALIN RISING The Associated Press MILAN – Anita Ekberg, the Swedish-born actress and sex-symbol of the 1950s and ’60s who was immortalized bathing in the Trevi fountain in “La Dolce Vita,” has died. She was 83.

Ekberg’s lawyer Patrizia Ubaldi confirmed she died in Rome on Sunday morning after a series of illnesses. She had been hospitalized most recently after Christmas.

Ubaldi said that in her last days Ekberg was saddened by the illness and her advancing age.

“She had hoped to get better, something that didn’t

happen,” she said.

Ekberg had long lived in Italy, the country that gave her worldwide fame thanks to the iconic dip opposite Marcello Mastroianni. The scene where the blond bombshell, clad in a black dress, her arms wide open, calls out “Marcello” remains one of the most famous images in film history.

Her curvaceous body and glamorous social life made her a favorite of tabloid press in the 1950s and 1960s.

She married twice but never had children – a fact she came to regret later in her life. Some gossip magazines called her “The Iceberg” in a nod to her Scandinavian background.

Festivities begin for Bruce Rauner’s inauguration

SPRINGFIELD – From a museum visit to a swanky $1,000-a-plate dinner at the Illinois Capitol on Sunday, Gov.elect Bruce Rauner spent his last day before assuming the governorship celebrating and thanking supporters.

The Winnetka businessman will take the oath of office as Illinois’ 42nd governor Monday, the first Republican to hold that position since George Ryan left in 2003. Rauner told attendees at Sunday’s dinner that it was time to enjoy the festivities because there was a lot of work ahead.

The event followed a cocktail reception, a veterans job fair and a visit with children at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, which was open free to the public Sunday as part of the inauguration weekend.

On Monday there will be a morning prayer service, and the swearing in of constitutional officers.

After that will be an open house at the Old State Capitol and dinner, capped off by a concert with country star Toby Keith. A $125 admission price for that event that includes food and drink.

Chicago man charged in fatal beating of boy

CHICAGO – A Chicago man is facing charges in the fatal beating of a 1-year-old boy.

The Chicago Tribune reported that 28-year-old Danits Porter is charged with one count of aggravated battery to a child after allegedly beating the boy Tuesday. The child died of his injuries Friday.

to update the charges since the boy’s death.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office says the boy, Johnny Kimble, suffered fractures on both sides of his skull, broken ribs, a lacerated liver, internal bleeding and had numerous burn marks.

The office says an autopsy conducted Saturday was inconclusive, pending further investigation.

Police did not comment on the relationship between Porter and the boy.

Priest pleads guilty to disorderly conduct for exposure

ROCKFORD – A Roman Catholic priest has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct for exposing

himself in a gas station near Rockford and in a car in the store’s parking lot.

The Rev. Aaron Brodeski was arrested last spring in the March 27 incident.

He was pastor of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Batavia at the time, and was placed on leave while the diocese investigated.

Brodeski was sentenced Friday to two years of court supervision, a $500 fine and 30 hours of community service.

A statement issued by the Diocese of Rockford says Brodeski is not assigned to any duties as priest, and “will work with diocesan officials to determine the next course for him.”

The diocese says Brodeski was ordained in 1998.

Federal funding provides $400M bump for hospitals

CHICAGO – Hospitals across Illinois will receive $400 million in federal funding under the Affordable Care Act. Gov. Pat Quinn said Saturday he traveled to Washington last month to lobby for the funding bump. It will allow the state to increase its funding to hospitals to care for more inpatient and outpatient clients and cover a greater volume of people newly enrolled in the Affordable Care Act. Department of Healthcare and Family Services Director Julie Hamos said payments will begin by mid-February and will cover expenses retroactively.

Quinn also issued two

executive orders Saturday. One ensures the state continues Affordable Care Act enrollment.

The other ensures the state fully complies with a pregnancy discrimination law.

Carbon monoxide often leaks from fuel-burning appliances and heaters when lines are not installed properly or are poorly maintained.

WASHINGTON – Attorney General Eric Holder isn’t saying whether he still will be on the job when the time comes to decide whether to bring charges in the investigation of former CIA Director David Petraeus.

Holder, in several television news interviews on Sunday, steered clear of commenting directly on the investigation.

But he told CBS’ “Face the Nation” he expects that “a matter of this magnitude” would be decided “at the highest level” of the department.

Holder has announced he’s stepping down as attorney general. President Barack Obama has nominated a federal prosecutor, Loretta Lynch, who awaits Senate confirmation.

Federal investigators have been looking into whether Petraeus improperly shared classified materials with his biographer, Paula Broadwell.

Petraeus admitted having an affair with her when he resigned from the CIA in 2012.

Conference on violent extremism planned

WASHINGTON – The White House plans a conference next month on efforts to counter violent extremism – in light of the past week’s shootings in France and earlier attacks in Canada and Australia.

The meeting will highlight domestic and international efforts to prevent extremists and their supporters from radicalizing,

recruiting and inspiring others in the United States and elsewhere to carry out violent acts.

The White House says the Feb. 18 summit will build upon a U.S. strategy to address the threat of violent extremism. The White House said cities such as Boston, Los Angeles and Minneapolis-St. Paul have taken a leading role as part of their approach to crime prevention and community safety.

Representatives from other countries will attend, although the White House did not identify them.

The main goal is to “better understand, identify and prevent the cycle of radicalization to violence at home in the United States and abroad,” the White House said in a statement.

‘Boyhood,’ ‘Grand Budapest’ win at Globes

By ANGELA CHARLTON and THOMAS ADAMSON The Associated Press PARIS – More than a million people surged through the boulevards of Paris behind dozens of world leaders walking arm-in-arm Sunday in a rally for unity described as the largest demonstration in French history. Millions more marched around the country and the world to repudiate three days of terror that killed 17 people and changed France.

Amid intense security and with throngs rivaling those that followed the liberation of Paris from the Nazis, the city became “the capital of the world” for a day, on a planet increasingly vulnerable to such cruelty.

More than 40 world leaders headed the somber procession – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas; Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Russian Foreign Minis-

Initial signs of hypothermia are cold fingers and skin, bluish lips, mild confusion and slurred speech. A person may not even realize he or she is too cold and a home thermometer is not designed to identify a drop in body temperature, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

If you suspect hypothermia in someone, contact emergency help immediately. Gently move the person to a warm and dry place, remove any wet clothing, avoid jolting an elderly person and, if he or she is conscious, provide a warm drink.

Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold suggests residents help out older neighbors by checking on them daily, making sure they have enough food, supplies and medicines during inclement weather.

Help them keep driveways and sidewalks shoveled and use rock salt to melt ice and snow. See if they have emergency kits in their vehicles.

“Encourage [older neighbors] to say inside,” said Wold.

“Be a good neighbor, stop for a visit, bring them lunch or offer to drive them if they absolutely need to get out.”

Plainfield Central graduate Matt Hund trailed the play and, with his athleticism at full bore, he timed his arrival at the basket perfectly. He grabbed the rebound and slammed it home.

Only on this rare occasion, the freshman forward missed the dunk.

The ball rattled around the rim, hit the backboard and then settled inside the cylinder. Joliet Junior College had two important points, increasing its lead over Wilbur Wright to 51-47 in Saturday afternoon’s North Central Community College Conference battle at Wills Gymnasium.

“Yeah, that was weird,” Hund said with a smile. “Usually I put ’em down, not roll ’em around the rim.

But two points is two points.”

Moments later, the Wolves embarked on a 9-0 run and never were threatened again en route to a 69-55 victory.

At 6-foot-7 and “maybe 180 pounds on a good day,” Hund qualifies as a string bean. He also was born with club foot on the right leg, and he graduated from Plainfield Central in 2011.

But if any of that is supposed to work against him, he won’t allow it.

Hund has played in all 18 games for the Wolves (15-3), starting 16. He is averaging 25.8 minutes, 9.3 points and a team-leading 10.0 rebounds, including 3.6 offensive boards. He also averages 3.0 blocked shots. JJC as a team averages 3.6.

Hund’s timing on shot blocking is uncanny.

“Matt is one of the hearts of our team,” Wolves sophomore guard Larry Moore said. “He holds us together on defense. He brings us intensity when he jams on offense.

“But maybe the biggest thing about him is he is such a positive person. He’s always encouraging the rest of us.”

“Matt is very active,” JJC assistant coach Keith Kinzler said. “He gives us a good inside presence, whether it’s with blocked shots, tip-jams or offensive rebounds. He is athletic. He is out of this world sometimes.”

Hund said he had multiple surgeries and casts until he was 2 years old to correct the club foot as well as possible. “That has never been a

The last three years, when he was not in school, Hund said he was playing basketball regularly at LA Fitness and developing his idea of what his game should be. He attended open gyms at JJC with Justin Scanlan, who played at Plainfield Central and JJC, and the Wolves’ coaching staff noticed him.

“We talked to him about going back to school,” Kuhn said. “I’m obviously glad he came here. The success he has had with the adversity he has had in his life is amazing.”

Kuhn echoed what Moore and Kinzler said about Hund’s effect on the Wolves. He noted that in last Wednesday’s overtime loss at Triton, Hund was one blocked shot shy of a triple double.

“Blocking shots has become my favorite thing to do,” Hund said. “I time my blocks a lot better now.”

“Matt is playing terrific basketball,” Kuhn said. “His contributions defensively, rebounding, blocking shots, changing shots, his put-back jams, they’re all momentum plays.

His presence allows our other guys to gamble a little more defensively.”

“I like to let my teammates gamble,” Hund said. “They know I have their backs.”

That can be said off the floor as well.

GM Pace seems to fit the bill for Bears 10 question marks for Bears and new GM BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush Let’s be completely honest here, we still know less than one percent of all that we need to learn about Ryan Pace, the new general manager of the Chicago Bears.

After all, the Pace regime at Halas Hall is still less than 48 hours old.

But step one in the process is analyzing what you think the team needs in a new football boss, bulletpointing a few essentials and then hoping you can cross them off as accomplished when the new guy walks through the door.

I, for one, was of the opinion that it was crucial the Bears wipe away the Angelo/Emery years with a fresh face with no prior attachment to the organization, but obviously newer isn’t always better.

Not only is Pace new and clearly fresh as the youngest GM in the league by three years, consider what he had

to say about winning in the NFL. “We’ll be a team who looks at every single avenue in improving our roster.

We’ll be aggressive in our approach, but I understand the Bears, for the Bears to have sustained success, we must build through the draft.

“The recipe to winning Super Bowls is stringing successful drafts together again and again. We are not just collecting athletes.

We are acquiring football players that fit the Chicago Bears. There will be a major emphasis on character, toughness, instincts and intelligence.”

That is a 180 degree turn from the Lovie Smith and Emery mantra of finding speed and athletes and hoping they become players.

Next on my list was whether the Bears find a new age young man who grasped the significance of this opportunity.

“This is a dream for me,” Pace said. “You only get one first shot. So it better be right. The more I thought about this when I came up

to win and sustain success.

Once I got into the building, I met the ownership, the historic franchise, the city of Chicago, coming back to Illinois, my wife is from here, everything just felt right and again I trust my instincts and my gut and that’s why I’m here.”

Emery was the college scouting director for the Falcons and Chiefs before being named the Bears GM. Pace comes from the other side of scouting; he was the Saints’ director of pro scouting for six years before spending the last two as the director of player personnel.

The Saints’ front office had blended the pro and college sides together, Pace said, which gives him experience in scouting the draft and other pro teams.

“Whether you’re working on one side or the other, you’re really doing both,” he said. “And I actually think that’s important.”

5. Will the Bears’ scouting staff be blended that way, too?

No matter: The All-Pro quarterback and his Green Bay Packers are one step away from the Super Bowl.

“Look, I’ll tell you this, I’ve never seen that a day in my life,” Bryant said. “I want to know why it wasn’t a catch.”

Because Bryant didn’t maintain control all the way to the ground, as the rule states. Replays showed Bryant bobbling the ball as he rolled into the end zone,

with part of it touching the field.

“By rule he must hold onto it throughout entire process of contacting the ground,” tweeted Dean Blandino, the league’s director of officiating. “He didn’t, so it is incomplete.”

An impassioned Bryant didn’t buy it.

“All I know is I had possession, I had possession of the ball coming down,” Bryant said. “That’s possession, right? One, two, reach.

Green Bay closed it out before a Lambeau-record 79,704 on Randall Cobb’s diving 12-yard reception of a deflected pass on thirdand-11. That gave Cobb eight catches for 116 yards and set off a raucous celebration at the iconic venue.

“It’s unbelievable,” Cobb said. “For the ball to get tipped and magically appear in my area, you can’t tell me there’s not a God. That was a crazy play.”

Luck, Colts upset Manning

Hardly pressured all afternoon, Luck threw two touchdown passes Sunday and led the Indianapolis Colts past Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos, 24-13.

The Colts (13-5) advanced to the AFC championship game at New England (13-4), which beat Baltimore 35-31 Saturday night.

“I think we’re playing good team ball,” Luck said.

“We’re feeding off each other. Offensively we’re making enough plays to put some points on the board.

Great night. So proud to be a part of the Colts in this victory.”

The Broncos (12-5) are left to deal with the hangover of yet another playoff debacle – and maybe questions about Manning’s future as well as that of coach John Fox. Manning, who joined the Broncos in 2012 after his release from Indy, has gone one-and-done in the playoffs a record nine times in his otherwise stellar career – including twice in Denver, where he’s 38-10 in the regular season, but just 2-3 in the playoffs.

Overall, he’s 11-13 in the postseason and this was one of his worst playoff performances ever. He never found a rhythm, constant-

ly overthrew his receivers and finished 26 of 46 for 111 yards, one TD and no interceptions.

It wasn’t the kind of bounce-back the Broncos expected after watching Manning throw just three TD passes with six interceptions in December after Denver downshifted its high-octane offense.

Each of his three seasons in Denver has ended in humbling losses, to the Ravens and Colts at home after first-round byes and to Seattle in last year’s Super Bowl.

Luck completed 27 of 43 passes for 265 yards with two TDs and two interceptions that were the equivalent of punts and no sacks.

Ohio State, Oregon title game will crown a ‘true champion’

By RALPH D. RUSSO The Associated Press DALLAS – Ohio State and Oregon will meet in a game that never has been played for a trophy that never has been raised.

The winner Monday night in North Texas can be called the truest champion in the history of major college football.

The first College Football Playoff national championship game matches the second-seeded Ducks and fourth-seeded Buckeyes at AT&T Stadium.

“It’s college football history,” Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said Sunday during a news conference with Oregon coach Mark Helfrich, with that new championship trophy sitting in between them.

The days of bowls, polls and the BCS having the final say about who is No. 1 are over.

The playoff that fans wanted for so long – and finally got – will determine a champion without a doubt.

Oregon (13-1) and its Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Marcus Mariota are in search of the program’s first national title, the last remaining goal for a school that has barged onto the national stage over the last two decades with ostentatious flare and flashy uniforms.

Ohio State (13-1) is shooting for national championship No. 5, but the first under coach Urban Meyer, who returned to his home state three years ago to take over a college football goliath that was looking to start its next golden age.

The Ducks, from the Pac-12, raced into the championship game with an emphatic 59-20 victory against Florida State last week at the Rose Bowl.

The Buckeyes, from the Big Ten, upset Alabama 42-35 at the Sugar Bowl to cap an improbable rebound from an early-season loss and injuries to two star quarterbacks.

Ohio State has won 12 straight since stumbling at home to Virginia Tech in September.

The Ducks have won nine in a row since, all by double-digit margins, since losing to Arizona in October.

For decades, college football’s best team was picked by poll voters, and postseason matchups were set with little regard for determining a national champion.

The Bowl Championship Series was implemented in 1998, a system designed to create a No. 1 vs. No. 2 national championship game to end the season. It was an awkward and imperfect step in the right direction, often leaving everyone involved unsatisfied. The conference commissioners who ran the BCS relented a couple years ago and decided to create a four-team playoff.

Here are some things to know about the ultimate winner-take-all-game:

SUPER MARIOTA

Mariota can become the seventh Heisman Trophy winner since 1996 to win the national championship in the same season he won the Heisman. Florida State’s Jameis Winston did it last season.

Another victory in what is very likely his last college game would top off a career that can go down as one of the best in college football history.

Mariota has thrown for 10,463 yards, 103 touchdowns passes and just 13 intercep-

tions while winning 35 games in three seasons as Oregon’s starter.

“Our No. 1 concern is their quarterback,” Meyer said.

The Buckeyes hope to contain the fast-moving Mariota with a defensive line, led by All-America defensive end Joey Bosa, that is among the best in the nation.

“They’ve got an awesome front seven,” Mariota said.

MEYER’S MILESTONE

Meyer can become the second coach in college football history to win national championships with two schools, joining Nick Saban, who won the BCS title in 2003 with LSU and then three more titles with Alabama.

Meyer won national titles with Florida in 2006 and 2008.

A third championship would make Meyer the ninth coach in college football’s poll era (dating to 1936) to win at least three championships. Bear Bryant leads with the six he won at Alabama.

JOLIET – The BoneYard Animal Rescue in Joliet was selected by the American Public Works Association Southwest Branch to receive the 2014 President’s Choice of Charities Award.

The award was presented

by Allison Swisher of the Department of Public Utilities, Joliet Division, at their annual award luncheon Jan. 7 at the Haley Mansion in Joliet. BoneYard founders Jane and Rich Kohlmann were present to receive the monetary award of $1,000.

The rescue was formed in February 2014; and although it owns a unit in the Rock Run Business Park in Joliet, it has remained foster-based.

When I have proofread a column twice but there is still a typo, I realize I read and reread with deliberate carelessness.

Declarers sometimes lose contracts with carelessness, which we will assume was not deliberate. For example, the original declarer went down in this six-heart slam. What should he have done after West led the club seven?

North’s three-heart rebid showed four-card support, some 15-17 support points and six losers (two spades, two hearts, one diamond and one club). South used Roman KeyCard Blackwood, and North indicated zero (which was impossible here) or three key-cards: three aces, or two aces and the heart king. (Note that this would have been an excellent deal for RKCB if North had shown four key-cards: the heart ace-king and both minor-suit aces. Then South could have bid seven no-trump and immediately claimed.)

At the table, South took the first trick and played a trump. However, East won with his ace and gave his partner a club ruff to defeat the slam.

True, it was unlucky to find clubs 1-5 and hearts 2-1 with a bare ace, but that was the only likely danger to the contract. How could South have survived?

Right! At trick two, he should have overtaken his diamond king with dummy’s ace, then discarded his second club on the diamond queen.

When we talk about the energy we have, we’re often talking about what I call “mental” energy. Energy is also about your mind and emotions. When you’re mentally energetic, you’re curious and alert – you’re “on.” But mental energy is more complicated than physical energy. In fact, we really don’t know much about it.

On one level, mental energy probably is about energy production in cells – specifically, brain cells. But mental energy also reflects our emotional state and how interested we are in something. When you’re really absorbed in an activity, you feel more energetic than when you are only half-interested in it.

Does this result from inadequate energy in brain cells? We don’t know, and it’s a very hard thing to study – the ability of brain cells to make energy in a living human being who either feels very energetic or who feels he or she lacks energy.

It’s valuable to try to understand what the chemistry of mental energy is inside the cells of our brain. From that research may come more fundamental ways of feeling more energetic.

Dear Doctor K: We use the word “energy” a lot.

But what exactly is it?

Dear Reader: We work – our hearts beat, our brains think, our muscles move – because our cells work. Our cells work because they can generate energy. They can generate it because the blood brings them fuel they convert into energy. Let’s call this “physical” energy.

Why is energy important? Without it, you wouldn’t be able to breathe, get up out of your chair or read this column. I emphasize particularly that last point.

Where does the fuel for your cells come from? The food you eat is digested and absorbed into the bloodstream, which delivers it to cells throughout the body. A major fuel is the sugar glucose, which is produced by the digestion of the carbohydrates you eat. Oxygen from your lungs is another fuel that travels to your cells in the bloodstream.

Inside your cells, tiny structures called mitochondria convert fuel food nutrients into the chemical adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is the body’s primary source of energy for everything from walking to thinking. (On my website, askdoctork.com, I’ve put an illustration showing how food and oxygen become energy.)

Your body stores only a small amount of ATP, but it makes more as quickly as it’s needed.

When demand increases – when you are exercising, for example – your body must churn out more. To do this, it taps into sugar (glucose) stored in muscles and the liver, as well as fats stored around the body.

Dear Abby: I have been with “Paul” for 10 months.

We met shortly after he and his fiancée broke up.

Because of her, he had gone into debt, and after their breakup he lost his job.

I have helped him with money from the moment we met. He’s still jobless and his unemployment benefit will end shortly, but Abby, he is careless with money. He ends up spending mine and borrows from friends who have to be paid back. Last month, he took my credit card, and within a week 1,400 euros were gone and bills were left unpaid.

Because Paul is stressed and depressed, he goes out and drinks. More than once he has spent the rent money in bars. He often gets home at 4 a.m. He’s also jealous and controlling. He texts and rings me constantly and asks why I took so long to answer. If I go out for a coffee, he demands to know who with.

He has a hot temper and shouts at me for the slightest thing – like if I didn’t close a door, or he thinks I didn’t pay attention to something he said.

Our sex life has never been great. He blames me for that, too. He says I don’t initiate it enough, and he’s threatening to start going with other girls. He is also bossy. He always says I never do anything for him. Even though I work until 5:30, he expects me to bring him water, coffee, turn on the air con and stuff.
