Union Stockyards – Chicago The Union Stockyard and Transit Company, known commonly as The Chicago Stockyards, was a major industrial hub for more than a century.

Officially opening on Christmas Day 1865, the stockyards were formed as a consolidation of older stockyards scattered throughout the city. In doing so, the city’s meatpackers decided to concentrate their efforts along the south branch of the Chicago River, partly because of the complaints from the odors, but mostly to take advantage of improved transportation facilities offered by the newly opened I&M Canal.

While the stockyards were located near a fork of the South Branch of the Chicago River to take advantage of the canal, the stockyards also were developed in tandem with the railroads, which would take freshly slaughtered meat all over the country.

At its height, it is estimated that the stockyards processed nearly 15 million head of livestock a year. All of this helped position Chicago as the center of the American meat industry.

By the close of the 19th century, the stockyards became a popular tourist attraction by allowing visitors to view the killing floors and “disassembly lines.” The entire slaughtering process was known as a “disas-

sembly line,” and the Chicago stockyards widely are credited with providing the inspiration for modern assembly lines.

The Union Stockyards left an indelible mark on Chicago’s history, not only defining the city as “hog-butcher for the world,” but also provided jobs for the many immigrants coming to Chicago during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

In addition to providing em-

ployment for newly arriving Europeans, the stockyards also were the inspiration for Upton Sinclair’s Nobel Prize-winning book The Jungle, which revealed unsanitary conditions in the meatpacking industry and would ultimately lead to many reform measures.

Once refrigerated trucks and highways came into play, the processing plants, no longer dependent upon the prox-

imity of the railroads, decentralized and moved west. The Union Stockyard and Transit Company closed its doors in 1971. The Then and Now images show views of the old Lemont limestone gate, which marked the entrance to the stockyards. Designed by the architectural firm of Burnham & Root, the gate was built in 1875 and is located near Exchange Avenue and Peoria Street.

Joliet history museum looks at sci-fi’s past with new exhibit

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – When “Star Trek” appeared on television screens 50 years ago, it was clearly science fiction. The characters could talk to each other from anywhere using just a metal case containing a few circuits that fit in their hands.

Today’s science fiction may reflect tomorrow’s science and also inspire those who create it, said Brian Conroy, museum assistant at the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

“Science fiction has people working in space ... visiting other worlds. It’s the 15th anniversary of the International Space Station. They’re planning a mission to Mars,” Conroy said.

Through May, the historical museum is running a temporary exhibit called “Space ...

The Final Frontier.”

Much of the exhibit consists of science fiction artwork and curios from the collection of Michael and Malcolm Phifer.

One wall has imaginary landscapes from different artists hanging over boards with images of actual planets.

According to a card near his painting “Alchemy Planet,” artist Mitchell Davidson Bentley said the “piece represents the ongoing process of melding the differences between illustration and speculative astronomical art.”

Some of the pieces show spacecraft that could already be on the drawing board at NASA, while others depict men and women with ray guns encountering beasts and robots in other worlds.

On the other side of the exhibit room, TV screens show videos of a bionic exoskeleton being used to assist someone walking, and clips from “Back to The Future Part II,” a film made in 1989 that depicted life in 2015.

City to discuss Bicentennial Park plans Bicentennial Park timeline

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The timetable for a proposal to put Bicentennial Park under Joliet Township control has slowed since the city gave the go-ahead for an inspection of park facilities.

But Joliet Township Supervisor Dan Vera said the township’s due diligence is done, and he intends to talk this week with the city manager about his interest in the cityowned park.

What’s next is hard to tell.

Vera would only say Friday that the due diligence inspection of Bicentennial Park facilities was completed in November, and he plans to talk with Joliet City Manager Jim Hock.

As to whether he will go to the township board this month for authority to pursue an agreement for township control of the park, Vera said he did not have an answer.

“I don’t until we talk to the city manager to see what his thoughts are,” Vera said.

Vera at one time had hoped to seek township board authority in October after getting a green light from the city to bring building and insurance inspectors onto the property to check out conditions.

But the due diligence work was not completed until November.

The city, meanwhile, has budgeted $431,000 for Bicentennial Park in 2016, close to the same amount budgeted in 2015. Hock said the budget does not mean the city has made a decision about the future of the park.

“There really hasn’t been any action on it,” Hock said.

“We still have to budget it.”

Vera has made a general proposal, saying he believes

the township could bring back festivals and events that were held at Bicentennial Park before the city cut funding with the onset of the recession.

He has said an intergovernmental agreement could keep the city involved in the park while giving control to the township. He has proposed that the city continue to contribute $100,000 a year to the park.

Councilman Michael Turk, the liaison for Bicentennial Park, said there is mixed opinion on the council as to whether the city should give up control of the park to the township. Much depends on what kind of detailed proposal is made by the township.

The city probably should not wait much longer to decide, however, he said.

Crest Hill Industrial Park welcomes new Class A distribution center

Atlanta-based Ridgeline Property Group is developing a 438,150-square-foot Class A distribution center on 29 acres of land at the southwest corner of Division Street and Enterprise Boule-

vard, according to a company news release.

Concrete and steel work is beginning this month, and completion is scheduled for August.

According to Ridgeline, the site was selected because of its proximity to Interstates 55 and 80.

“Demand in the market remains strong, but there is a limited supply of space in the submarket,” Pete Harmon,

Harmon said the site is one of the last remaining strategic sites along Interstate 55.

319 parking spaces, 163 trailer parking spaces and early suppression fast response sprinklers, the release stated.

Ridgeline is partnering with Cabot Properties on the development.

The Crest Hill City Council approved Jan. 3 a change to subdivide the Ridgeline property for the new development, assistant city administrator Heather McGuire said.

Ten members of HUGS helped at MorningStar Mission distributing Thanksgiving baskets. Twenty volunteered to wrap gifts at MorningStar.

Members helped a local family conduct a shoe drive with the help of Troy W.B. Orenic School, Post Net, TCBY, Goddard School and the Channahon Park District.

They raised money to bring a baby named Faith from China to her new home in Channahon just last week.

Members participate in the Joliet Relay for Life and have raised $25,000 through the years. They helped several families affected by the Coal City tornado.

There are too many acts of kindness to mention in this space, but the organization, its growing membership and the assistance by local businesses, are a gift to the surrounding communities.

“The women of HUGS have a passion for giving back to the community,” Babyak said.

The organization also thrives on the kindheartedness of community members who contact them with wishes. It’s

the other side of the equation, and these are the people who see pain or struggle in their neighborhoods and want to do something – anything – to help.

HUGS receives many generous monetary gifts from the community, among them a donation from Minooka Community High School’s SADD program, a grant from AT&T for which they were nominated by state Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Plainfield, and a donation from author Amy Logan from her first Kindness Gala, where HUGS was honored.

The HUGS Chocolate Ball is its largest fundraiser. This year’s event is Feb. 6 at the Joliet Clarion ballroom, and electronic tickets are available at www.shorewoodhugs.org.

Susan Underwood became the organization’s third president in September. She’s been a member for three years. Her passion has always been to give back to the community, and being part of HUGS is a great opportunity to do that, she said.

“We have grown so much, which helps provide a lot of positive influence in the community,” Underwood said.

“New members have different outlooks and bring different skills and ideas. That helps us reach out and do things we may not have thought of before.”

Many people have been helped in the past year by the nonprofit organization Helping You Get Started, and the number goes above and beyond those who are helped by their locally famous HUGS and Wishes program.

This group started in 2010 with about 20 local women who wanted to do good things in and around the Shorewood area. Now in its seventh year, it has grown to 54 members.

What’s great about that, said former HUGS president and co-founder Molly Babyak, is the members are out and about in their own communities, and many times are the ones who bring special causes to the HUGS board for review.

Member Crystil Carie was the driving force for the organization to assist 16 families housed at Lambs Fold with Christmas dinner last year, as well as provide new hats, gloves and treats for 43 children. This was the third year for the program.

Another HUGS member knew of foster families who needed help during the holidays. HUGS was able to provide special gifts to the five families, including a set of bunk beds and mattresses for one who took in two girls.

Because HUGS keeps its programs mostly local, area businesses want to help, Babyak said, and HOBO in Joliet made those gifts come true by giving HUGS special prices on the beds.

Joliet minister served God, his neighbors and his country approached Joliet officials about the city’s gang problem long before many people knew the city had one – Cathy Lane, Sydney’s wife, said one pastor summed up Stanley’s real gift.

One was his service in the U.S. Army during World War II. The other was his service to the Joliet community – as a chaplain at the Illinois Youth Commission Reception & Diagnostic Center for Delinquent Boys in Joliet; as chaplain at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet; and as a founding and board member of many Joliet organizations.

Even in Stanley’s later life – he started battling in 1997 Alzheimer’s disease and a heart condition – he continued quite a few of those memberships. Nancy Allen, of Joliet, the wife of The Rev. Jim Allen, said that her husband knew Stanley through clergy and other associations and often gave Stanley rides to meetings. “[Jim] would say, ‘Boy, he’s ready to go anytime, pushing that walker around,’ ” Nancy said. “ ‘He’s not missing anything.’ ” A former cowboy, Stanley grew up as an only child on a ranch in Yuma, Colorado, where his father was foreman.

The young Stanley branded cattle, broke horses and led a team of workhorses, Sydney said.

When “hail, rust and drought” caused the owner to lose the ranch, Stanley’s family moved to Missouri. Because his young age prevented him from doing so earlier, Stanley entered the Army during the last 18 months of the war. He was trained in artillery, became a technical sergeant and served in France and Germany, Sydney said.

While stationed in Oklahoma, Stanley met his future wife, the late Betty. They were married in 1947. Stanley graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University and Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston and then was assigned to a succession of Illinois churches, Sydney said.

Each church started services about the same time but paused for the preaching when Stanley arrived. And how did they know he was on the way? Why, his bad muffler alerted them, Sydney said.

“He would come home Friday night, do his visitation on Saturday, the three churches on Sunday, and we might get some family time in the afternoon,” Sydney said. “Then he was off to Topeka.”

In 1961, Stanley brought his family to Joliet – Betty and their four children – to become chaplain at the Illinois Youth Commission’s location on McDonough Street.

During this time, he was also involved in the groups that started Big Brothers Big Sisters, Senior Services and the Community Service Council.”

Florence King, writer known for her sharp wit, dies at 80 The ASSOCIATED PRESS FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Florence King, a writer who brought a fierce wit to her novels, essays and columns, has died.

Jack Fowler, publisher of the National Review and a longtime friend of King’s, said she died Wednesday at an assisted-living home in Fredericksburg. It was a day after her 80th birthday.

King was best known her National Review column, “The Misanthrope Corner,” where she humorously critiqued public figures and derided political correctness until 2002. King also wrote

several essays and books, including “Confessions of a Failed Southern Lady” in 1985.

Fowler called King a great critic of multiculturalism and popular trends and one

of the best writers of the English language in the 20th century.

He said she had been suffering from a number of medical issues over the last several years.

Chicago hires former U.S. attorney to review law dept.

By IVAN MORENO and JOHN O’CONNOR The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois has limped along without a budget since July and solving that gridlock will be lawmakers’ top priority in the impending session, a time when they’ve traditionally turned attention to passing a fresh budget for the coming fiscal year.

The epic budget fight that’s crippling many state services will overshadow other key issues lawmakers want to address in the 2016 session, which begins Wednesday, including legislation to allow recall efforts against Chicago mayors and regulating fantasy sports gambling.

Upcoming elections could weigh heavily and delay the budget deliberations. There are few session days scheduled before primaries March 15, and even if there’s a deal before then, some lawmakers may be reluctant to take on tough votes if they’re in tight contests.

In fact, lawmakers will be off to a slow start. While the Senate is meeting Wednesday, House lawmakers won’t convene until Jan. 27, the day of the State of the State address, because the “workload was not there,” said Steve Brown, the spokesman for Speaker Michael Madigan.

Despite rare, celebrated meetings last month between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and legislative leaders, there’s no indication he and Democrats who control the Legislature are any closer to bridging their ideological divide to end a seven-month stalemate.

Rep. David Harris, the Revenue and Finance Committee’s ranking Republican, said he’s not optimistic for a deal – but hopes he’s wrong.

“I’m one of those folks who believes there can be a middle ground and that middle ground requires some compromise,” said Harris, from Mount Pros-

pect. “And we have to get to a middle ground.”

If compromise comes, it may be in the form of two budgets – the one that’s overdue and one for next year, Harris said.

Also hovering over lawmakers is the state’s $111 billion pension debt. The state Supreme Court threw out the General Assembly’s suggested fix last year, but with no major proposals pending, any progress is likely to be slow.

The state’s budget for the current year should’ve taken effect July 1, but Rauner rejected the plan lawmakers sent him. He has said a budget agreement should include reforms he believes will benefit the state’s economy, like curbing the power of unions, setting term limits for lawmakers and passing measures to reduce businesses’ costs.

Democrats say the things Rauner wants have nothing to do with a state budget.

“He chose to put us into chaos and turmoil,” said Rep. Lou Lang, a Democratic leader.

Democrats want a combination of cuts and a tax increase to settle the dispute and plug a multibillion deficit. Rauner is open to increasing taxes but only if he gets his suggested reforms, saying he won’t “put in a significant new tax and change nothing.”

“That’s going to continue the long-term decline of the state that’s been going on for decades and I’m not going to do that,” he told reporters last week.

The state has managed without a budget because of court orders and stop-gap measures.

Last month, lawmakers and Rauner agreed to spend $3 billion from special funds. A third of that went toward paying state lottery winners, while emergency dispatch call centers and 52 domestic-violence shelters also received funding to stay afloat.

Stop-gap measures may become the norm for now, said Rep. Elaine Nekritz, a Buffalo Grove Democrat.

CHICAGO – A former U.S. attorney will conduct an independent review of the division of Chicago’s law department that defends police after a judge last week accused a city attorney of hiding evidence in a lawsuit over a fatal police shooting, the head of the department said Sunday.

Dan Webb, co-chairman of Winston & Strawn, will review “practices and standards” of the Federal Civil Rights Litigation division, which represents Chicago and its officers in federal civil cases, including claims of excessive force, corporation counsel Steve Patton said.

He also said the department will bring in outside experts to provide yearlong, “enhanced ethics training” to the division’s 45 lawyers and their support staff.

Last week, U.S. District Judge Edmond Chang threw out a jury’s April finding that the police shooting of 27-year-old black man during a 2011 traffic stop was justified. In a 72-page ruling, he accused attorney Jordan Marsh of hiding evidence and later lying about it while representing the city in a lawsuit filed by Darius Pinex’s relatives.

Chang also ordered a new trial.

Chang’s ruling was another blow for Mayor Rahm Emanuel and a police department that has been the subject of fierce criticism since the city, under court order, released squad-car footage of a white police officer shooting a black teenager 16 times. In the video, 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, armed with a closed pocket knife, is seen veering away from the officer before he opens fire.

Days after the video’s release, the U.S. Department of Justice announced it was opening a civil rights investigation of the Chicago police department.

School districts report trouble filling positions

SPRINGFIELD – More than half of Illinois school districts responding to a recent survey say they’re having trouble filling teaching positions. Three-quarters say they’re seeing fewer qualified candidates than in previous years.

The Springfield State Journal-Register reported 62 percent of the state’s school districts completed a survey developed by the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools.

It found rural school districts in central and northwest Illinois are having the toughest time finding qualified teachers.

Jeff Vose is regional superintendent for Sangamon and Menard counties and president of the association. He says Illinois’ budget problems and the possibility of reduced public-pension benefits have likely dissuaded applicants.

Sixteen percent of responding districts reported canceling programs or classes due to teacher shortages. Special education, math and science were among the hardest hit.

Trial set for woman accused of stabbing teacher

CHICAGO – An Ohio woman accused of stabbing a Catholic high school teacher to death in his suburban Chicago home is scheduled to go on trial this week.

Twenty-two-year-old Alisha Walker of Akron, Ohio, is charged with murder. Her attorney, Patrick O’Byrne, says she acted in self-defense.

Sixty-one-year-old Al Filan was found dead at his home in Orland Park in January 2014 by officers conducting a well-being check after he hadn’t been seen for three days.

Filan was stabbed more than a dozen times, including in his ear

and chest.

He headed the business studies department at Chicago’s Brother Rice High School.

Prosecutors say Walker went to Filan’s home after he solicited her for sex on a website used for prostitution.

The Daily Southtown reported that jury selection begins Monday.

Hundreds mourn teen fatally shot by Chicago police

CHICAGO – Hundreds of people have turned out to mourn a 19-year-old fatally shot by Chicago police.

Quintonio LeGrier was killed after officers responding to a Dec. 26 domestic disturbance said he was “combative” toward police. A neighbor, 55-year-old Bettie Jones, also was accidentally shot by police.

The Chicago Tribune reported LeGrier was remembered Saturday as an avid runner and book-smart Northern Illinois University student.

Friends and family also said they noticed changes in his behavior recently, in which he sometimes became angry. Police records show he had several confrontations with NIU officers.

Mourners also prayed for the Chicago police department, which has been under scrutiny since squad-car video was released that showed a white officer fatally shoot a black teenager.

The Rev. Warren Riley says “Our city is in trouble.”

MEXICO CITY – Mexican actress Kate del Castillo has stepped out of the fictional drug trafficker roles she played on TV and finds herself involved in the real world of drug capos.

The 43-year-old Del Castillo had her most memorable role in 2011 playing a drug kingpin in “The Queen of the South,” a TV series based on a book written by Spanish writer Arturo Perez-Reverte.

“It was every actress’s dream,” she said of the role in an interview with the Televisa network the following year. “She is a character who sleeps with married men, smokes marijuana, traffics drugs, kills people, she swears a lot and she is a big drunk.”

She also played a mobster in the U.S. television series “Weeds.”

Now Del Castillo is credited by U.S. actor Sean Penn with setting up a secret meeting with the world’s most wanted drug boss, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, in the mountains of Mexico while he was on the run in October, three months before he was captured Friday.

Del Castillo has long been fascinated with “El Chapo,” to whom she wrote a public appeal in 2012, urging him to do good and saying, “Today I believe more in Chapo Guzman than in the governments that hide the truth from me.”

Del Castillo later told The Associated Press that “nobody understood the irony, the sarcasm and the joke I was making” in the letter that was posted to her Twitter account.

But many saw it as fitting in with her on- and off-screen persona.

Penn wrote that del Castillo was first contacted by the drug kingpin’s lawyer in 2012 after she sent the public appeal, which included urging him to start “trafficking with love.” Penn said Guzman sent her flowers, which she somehow missed.

El Chapo’s representatives contacted her again after his arrest in February 2014, when “gringos were scrambling to tell his story,” Penn wrote.

Del Castillo has the kind of connections in Mexico’s movie and film industry to actually get a film made.

She’s the daughter of famed Mexican actor Eric del Castillo and has been a star herself for more than 20 years.

But it was unclear how far along the planning for the movie actually was.

Del Castillo had not publicly commented on the revelations as of Sunday.

It also was unclear whether U.S. and Mexican authorities were investigating Del Castillo, who lives in Los Angeles and reportedly has U.S. citizenship.

Penn described elaborate security measures – disposable phones and encrypted communications – that both he and Del Castillo took to keep the meeting secret.

But apparently, Del Castillo’s contacts with Chapo’s lawyers weren’t as closely guarded – and were detected.

“Another important lead that allowed us to locate him, was the discovery that Guzman intended to make a movie about his life,” said Mexican Attorney General Arely Gomez said Friday.

“To that end, he established communication with actresses and producers. ... In fact, the surveillance allowed us to document the meetings between these people and his [Chapo’s] lawyers.”

Married twice, Del Castillo also was linked romantically to actor Demian Bichir, who co-starred with her in the 2005 film “American Visa.”

Castillo is one of several Mexican actresses who have achieved some success with “cross-over” careers in the United States.

She appeared in the 2002 PBS series “American Family,” about a Latino family in Los Angeles.

Spurred by a bit of hurry-up, and a bunch of running, the wild-card Packers got going after a rough start Sunday, with Rodgers throwing for a pair of TDs while Eddie Lacy and James Starks each rushed for a score, and

Green Bay beat the NFC East champion Washington Redskins 35-18 to reach the divisional round.

Rodgers opened 1 for 8, and the Packers’ first four drives ended this way: punt, safety, punt, punt. They had all of 11 yards – yes, just 11 – after one quarter.

But trailing 11-0 early in

the second quarter, two-time NFL MVP Rodgers and the Packers suddenly began to show the sort of ability to gain yards in chunks and put points on the board they had been missing while losing six of their final 10 games and letting the NFC North title slip away.

Green Bay (11-6) will play

at the No. 2 seed Arizona Cardinals on Saturday night.

In the other NFC game next weekend, the No. 1 seed Carolina Panthers will host the wild-card Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

The game was barely 4 ½ minutes old when Washington led 2-0 on its first postseason safety since 1984 – rookie linebacker Preston Smith got to Rodgers for his sixth sack in the past four games.

The Redskins then went ahead 5-0 on Dustin Hopkins’ 25-yard field goal, but the lead could have been larger.

DeSean Jackson caught a pass

from Cousins and initially was ruled to have scored, but the points came off when it was ruled that the ball never crossed the goal line.

Later, Cousins connected with tight end Jordan Reed for a 24-yard score and, after a missed extra-point attempt, it was 11-0.

That was when Rodgers, the MVP of the 2011 Super Bowl, turned things around.

Rodgers looked a lot more like himself in the second quarter, going 5 for 6 for 68 yards on a drive that ended with a 12-yard TD pass to Cobb, drawing Green Bay within 11-7. And Rodgers pulled out all his usual tricks,

Later in that quarter, Cousins was strip-sacked by Mike Neal, who also recovered the fumble, which the Packers turned into a 43-yard field goal to trim their deficit to 11-10.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – For a team to be ranked among the best in the nation, they need to have a lot of positive qualities, such as an outstanding core group of players and excellent coaching.

But one aspect that often gets overlooked is possessing a bench that features individuals who can answer the bell whenever the need arises.

The University of St. Francis men’s basketball team is one of the top-ranked squads in its class, possessing the No. 2 ranking in NAIA Division II for more than a month.

After opening with 10 straight wins, the Fighting Saints own a 15-2 record after their exciting 82-81 victory over Saint Xavier on Saturday at the Sullivan Center.

USF coach Ryan Marks has seen his squad’s depth prove valuable often this season, but perhaps never more than in the victory over the Cougars.

Leading scorer Ilya Ilyayev, who came in averaging 23.6 points a game, was held scoreless for the first 35 minutes of the SXU contest.

like Edvinas Presniakovas (26 points) and Jens Kennedy (16 points), but also got a boost from the bench, most notably from Jo Jo Ballestero, who had 12 points.

It was a similar tale Dec. 30 when USF beat defending champion Cornerstone 88-78 despite not having Kennedy available because of an injury.

Iain Morison stepped in to collect 18 points while Breshion Tucker added nine and Jean Pietrzak scored eight points.

“I think that a big key for our are obviously some of

our role guys,” Marks said.

“Ilya has been a terrific volume scorer for us, Jens has been a good anchor inside and Eddie has been a consistent scorer for us. But some of these other guys have played a big role.

“Jake Raspopovich does a really good job of running our team and defending, Landus Anderson is an excellent defender and he and Jean Pietrzak draw a lot of tough matchups and Logan Timmons really gave us big minutes defensively with some key rebounds.”

Marks is obviously

pleased to have a team that features so much depth.

But he also realizes that not all players are thrilled by the prospect of contributing in a reserve role.

“When we’re playing at a high level and have gotten some of our big wins or are competing against the best teams in our league, a huge component of that is our depth,” Marks said. “You’ve got to have guys who have a pretty mature mentality to be comfortable in those roles and to understand their value to the team and what we need for them to contribute.

“We feel like we’ve had 12 or 13 different guys who’ve contributed. But every once in awhile I remind our guys that as a coach, I only have 200 minutes to disperse over the course of a game. When you look at our box scores, we usually have 10 guys with double-digit minutes or more, which is a pretty liberal substitution pattern.”

Ideally, Marks would like to get every player into each game, but that’s not always practical.

“Ryan Peter didn’t get into the Saint Xavier game,” Marks said. “He’s a great glue-guy, a guy that I love to coach and a guy who’s helped us win games this year. But we just weren’t able to get him into the rotation and as a coach that’s frustrating because I really like that kid and think that he’s good.

“When you’re recruiting, you’re trying to find guys who can help you win, are good fits academically and have personalities that mesh with one another. When you get to the end of the year and see teams that are going on to play in national tournaments, you see those that are filled with role guys that understand their value and have accepted that. And I think our group will continue to do that.”

The starting lineup, of course, is all important to the success of a basketball team.

If a coach can put five guys together who collectively can run the offense and score, handle the ball, defend and get their share of rebounds, chances are his team will be a winner.

Not to be overlooked, however, is the bench. You’re always going to have at least one starter who has foul issues, and with the way the game is played in this era, multiple reserves on each team are going to get their chance.

Something that occurred to me during coverage of a few boys high school games over the past week is how valuable the sixth man, the first player off the bench, is. That’s not to downplay the contributions of other reserves, but the sixthman role is special.

Of course, we in the Joliet area have the shining example of a sixth player. Allie Quigley, the Joliet Catholic graduate starting for the Chicago Sky, is the two-time defending Sixth Woman of the Year in the WNBA. Quigley contributes in other aspects of the game, but the most important element she brings the Sky is the ability to come in off the bench and score. The Sky do not lose anything offensively – and often gets a boost – when Quigley’s number is called.

Among the boys high school games I covered last week, senior forward Bradlee Mills had a big night for Plainfield North as the first man off coach Bob Krahulik’s bench, scoring 17 points in a Tuesday victory over Plainfield North. He hit 5 of 6 shots, including his only 3-point attempt, and 6 of 10 free throws for 17 points. Krahulik said Mills is capable of those sorts of performances as long as he plays within the framework of the offense.

Next up was the Minooka

In third quarter, when both teams were in an offensive funk, coach Joe Gura reinserted Finch, and he grabbed four of his five rebounds.

JCA outrebounded Providence, 14-6, in that quarter, which allowed the Hilltoppers to maintain their advantage in a game they eventually won, 51-43.

I’ve seen JCA a few times this season, and each time, Finch has contributed offensively, on the boards and, with his length and athleticism, he is decent defensively and can alter shots.

The Hilltoppers do not skip a beat with him on the floor.

Meanwhile, at Romeoville, coach Marc Howard has been using freshman guard Mike Salter as his sixth man most of the season.

Almost everywhere I go on the local basketball trail, someone mentions “that freshman at Romeoville,” and how good he is going to be.

With the spark Salter has been providing off the bench for the Spartans, he already is plenty good.

As with the other sixth men cited here, Salter, whose last-second layup gave Romeoville a 56-55 win over Plainfield North last Friday, is quick and can score points in a hurry.

When Howard looks to the first man off his bench, he does so with confidence.

Other area teams have good sixth men, and some are in different situations.

They might have such a deep bench that the sixth man changes night to night, depending on the opponent and/or the game situation.

Others still are searching for the guy who can take on that all-important sixth-man role and get the job done night after night.

It is not easy to come in cold off the bench and contribute almost immediately.

But when a coach has a kid who can be counted on to fill that role, he counts his lucky stars.

’Bama on verge of unprecedented run

By RALPH D. RUSSO The Associated Press SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Regardless of the outcome of Monday night’s College Football Playoff championship game between No. 1 Clemson and No. 2 Alabama, a case can be made that no team in the history of the sport has had a better run than the Crimson Tide under coach Nick Saban.

If Alabama beats the Tigers to win a fourth national title in seven seasons, the argument may be settled.

There was talk early in the season after Alabama lost to Mississippi that the Tide dynasty was in decline. Now Alabama (13-1) is one victory away from an unprecedented achievement.

The Tide can become just the third school in college football’s poll era, dating back to the creation of The Associated Press media poll in 1936, to win four championships in a 10-year span.

Notre Dame won four in seven seasons from 1943-49, but big-time college football is hardly comparable now to then. Those Fighting Irish didn’t play in bowl games and never needed more than nine victories to be the best in the country.

Miami won four championships in nine seasons (1983-91), but none of those teams had to play more than 12 games.

Alabama’s four championships under Saban, who took over in 2007, have all come in at least 13-game seasons.

“I mean, it’s incredible,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Sunday during a news conference with Saban. Swinney heaped so much praise on his counterpart during the half-hour session with reporters that Saban looked a little uncomfortable.

“Coach Saban, what he’s done, I mean, he’s one of the greatest coaches that ever coached the game,” Swinney said.

Saban also has a BCS title from his time at LSU, giving him four overall. Only former Alabama coach Bear Bryant with six has more.

The Tigers are back on the biggest stage and again being led by an Alabaman and former Tide player. Swinney grew up near Birmingham and played for Alabama when Gene Stallings was the coach in the early 1990s. He was on the Tide team that won a national championship in 1992, upsetting Miami in the Sugar Bowl. Alabama then went through a long dry spell until Saban arrived.

“People will say, well, anybody can go win at Alabama,” Swinney said. “Not everybody can coach a great team. Not everybody can coach a great player, and I think he has a gift to be able to do that.”

Under Swinney, the Tigers have won at least 10 games

each of the last five seasons, just like Alabama. And Clemson has its own shot at history: If the Tigers win the national title, they would become the first team to achieve a 15-0 season.

Alabama has been even better than that. Since going 7-6 in Saban’s first season, the Tide is 97-12 and has never finished out of the final AP top 10.

No surprise: Saban has not been part of the legacy talk this week. Pondering his place in history won’t help his players Monday night at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Some other things to know about the second College Football Playoff national championship game: Deshaun football: If Clemson is going to beat Alabama and break down a ferocious Alabama defense, Heisman Trophy finalist Deshaun Watson will lead the way. The sophomore is the most talented quarter-

back Alabama has faced and he poses a threat running and passing.

Watson set the Atlantic Coast Conference mark for total offense with 4,731 yards, 1,032 of those coming on the ground.

Dual-threat quarterbacks give most defenses trouble and Alabama is no exception. Watson said in preparation for the Tide, he watched Alabama’s loss to Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M in 2012.

Watson ran for a career-best 145 yards in Clemson’s 37-17 Orange Bowl semifinal victory against Oklahoma.

Heisman Henry: The Crimson Tide used Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry, who has set Southeastern Conference records for rushing yards (2,061) and touchdowns (25), as a complimentary part of its offense in beating Michigan State 38-0 in the Cotton Bowl.

Henry had 20 carries for 75 yards. Don’t be surprised if the Tide goes back to a heavy dose of Henry, who carried 90 times combined in the final two regular season games, to help control the clock and keep the ball away from Watson and Clemson’s up-tempo spread offense.

Hold the line: Alabama’s defensive line is the best and deepest in college football, led

by All-American A’Shawn Robinson. The line has helped the Tide lead the nation with 50 sacks.

Clemson has some talented defensive linemen, too, though not quite as many as Alabama.

That depth could be tested because All-America defensive end Shaq Lawson sprained his knee against Oklahoma and missed most of the Orange Bowl. He is expected to play, but how much? And how effective will he be?

By DAVID MERCER The Associated Press CHAMPAIGN – Malcolm Hill scored 30 points and Kendrick Nunn added 22 to lead Illinois past No. 20 Purdue, 84-70, on Sunday.

Hill and Nunn were a combined 17 for 27 from the field for the Illini (9-8, 1-3 Big Ten).

Nunn returned after missing Thursday’s loss at Michigan State for the birth of his son. He started slowly but scored 18 points in the second half. That included a nine-point run to open the half that turned a 37-all tie into a 46-37 Illinois lead.

Purdue (14-3, 2-2) was led

by Caleb Swanigan and P.J. Thompson with 12 points each.

Illinois big men Michael Finke and Maverick Morgan helped hold Purdue’s two 7-footers, A.J. Hammons and Isaac Haas, to a combined 16 points.

Boilermakers forward Raphael Davis fouled out with 1:49 to play. He didn’t score.

With Nunn away for the birth of his son, Kason Lee, Illinois struggled at No. 5 Michigan State, falling 79-54 in a game it was never really in.

Back on the court, Nunn shook the rust of a four-point first half with the nine-point run, which included a pair of 3-pointers. The first opened the half and gave the Illini a lead they never relinquished.

Nunn nailed the second even as he was being knocked to the floor by Dakota Mathias.

Nunn hit the free throw that followed, too.

He appeared to foul out with 3:36 left, only to have the officials review the play and call D.J. Williams for the foul on Vince Edwards instead.

After Morgan sank a short jump shot with 7:24 to play to give Illinois a 65-53 edge, the

Illini nursed a double-digit lead until the final buzzer.

Purdue presented what appeared to be a difficult matchup for Illinois, a team with its starting center, Mike Thorne Jr., out indefinitely due to injury and only two legitimate big men available, Finke and Morgan.

Morgan and Finke were assigned the task of dealing with Purdue’s 7-foot, 250-pound Hammons and, off the bench, the 7-2, 282-pound Haas – not to mention the 6-9, 250-pound Swanigan.

But instead of relying solely on the limited ability of the lean Finke and Morgan to batter the Boilermakers’ big men, Illinois sent both to the perimeter and gave them the chance to shoot.

Morgan finished with four points and Finke with six, but all of Finke’s points came on big 3s.

BLACKHAWKS 6, AVALANCHE 3

Blackhawks relentless against Avalanche for 7th straight win

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa each scored two goals and the Blackhawks rolled to a 6-3 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday night that extended their season-high win streak to seven.

Jonathan Toews had a goal and two assists to help the Hawks chase Semyon Varlamov and improved to 18-5-1 at home. Brandon Mashinter scored his second career goal and Corey Crawford had 34 saves.

The Hawks (58 points) moved within four points of idle Dallas for the top spot in the Western Conference.

Varlamov was pulled after Kane’s NHL-best 13th power-play goal made it 4-2 at 12:25 of the second.

The 27-year-old Varlamov went 11-3 with a 1.80 goalsagainst average in his first 15 appearances against the Hawks but has dropped each of his last two starts against the Hawks, allowing four goals in each one.

Matt Duchene had two goals and an assist for Colorado, which had won three in a row and four of six. Nathan MacKinnon also scored and Calvin Pickard finished with 13 stops in relief of Varlamov, who had 16 saves.

Duchene’s fourth goal in his past four games and No. 21 on the season trimmed the

Hawks’ lead to 3-2 at 9:18 of the second. But the reigning Stanley Cup champions responded with an impressive offensive flurry over the final part of the period.

After Kane picked up his 25th goal, Toews drove a slap shot over Pickard’s glove for his 16th of the season.

Hossa then finished off a pretty passing sequence for the Hawks’ top line, making it 6-2 at 18:42.

Hossa also scored off a nice pass by defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson earlier in the second, stopping a scoring drought of 14 games with his first goal since Dec. 6. His first multigoal game of the season put him at 493 goals for his stellar career.

JOLIET – Wags 2 Wishes Animal Rescue is hosting a bowling fundraiser on Jan. 24 to help pay for costs associated with therapy for one of its pups.

On Oct. 1, Jersey had a fibrocartilaginous embolism, which left her back legs paralyzed.

Therapy helped her walk again, but she is unable to wag her tail, or relieve her bladder or bowels.

One of the rescue’s volunteers is giving Jersey a home.

“Bowling for Jersey” will be from 1 to 3 p.m. at Crest Hill Lanes, 905 Theodore St., Crest Hill.

The cost is $20 for individuals over age 10 and $15 for kids 10 and under. The cost includes pizza, pop, shoes and two hours of bowling.

I can relate to that. However, when you are presented with a bridge problem on a piece of paper, it is usually easier to find the right answer than it would have been at the table with no warning bell ringing. That applies to this deal, which occurred during last year’s world championships in Sanya, China.

East inquired with two no-trump and learned that his partner had a minimum with hearts. Then East leapt straight into six hearts without even bothering to use Roman Key Card Blackwood.

If you were South, you would have probably started wondering what to lead against six hearts. But not Geir Helgemo, a Norwegian who plays for Monaco. He stopped to analyze the auction. Clearly his partner, Tor Helness, was void in hearts. Also, East had a void somewhere; otherwise, he would have checked on key cards. East presumably had a long, solid diamond suit. If so, six hearts was probably making, but six spades would be a cheap sacrifice – and might even be a make!

So Helgemo overcalled six spades.

East doubled, of course, and the contract went an unlucky down one; if North had held the club 10, it would have coasted home. And six hearts by East – but not by West after a diamond lead – was laydown.

He or she can locate and remove torn cartilage, debris and loose material from the joint. This all involves much less cutting than traditional surgery.

A third advantage: With arthroscopic surgery, you probably won’t have to stay in the hospital overnight. The type of anesthesia used varies; it can be general (you go to sleep), regional (the leg is numbed) or local (just the knee area is numbed).

A fourth advantage: Recovery from arthroscopic surgery is relatively quick. You should be back to normal, day-to-day living during the first week. By the second week, you can return to work if your job is not physically taxing. By the third week, you can begin light exercise. Physical therapy is not usually needed.

Unfortunately, if you have severe osteoarthritis of your knees, arthroscopy is unlikely to help much. Indeed, you may need joint replacement surgery -- a “bigger” operation than arthroscopic surgery.

Good candidates are active people in their 30s and 40s who have knee pain caused by torn cartilage or ligaments, and those with mechanical knee problems such as locking, catching or giving out.

If you’re one of those, you’ll do well.

long runner with severe knee pain. I hate the thought of surgery, but hear it’s not such a big deal these days, using arthroscopy. How do I know if I’m a good candidate for it?

Dear Reader: Arthroscopy is a technique used to diagnose problems in the knees and other joints. If a problem requiring surgery is identified, arthroscopic surgery can be performed.

To appreciate how valuable arthroscopic surgery is, you have to understand what things were like back in the “old days” – like when I was in medical school.

If you had bad knee pain, the doctor might have been able to diagnose the problem by physical examination.

If not, X-rays were not much help: They could spot bone problems, but most knee problems involve the “soft tissues” – tendons, ligaments, meniscuses. X-rays don’t take very good pictures of soft tissues. So the doctor might have needed to perform surgery to open up the knee joint, look around and surgically repair the problem. It took quite a while to recover from that surgery.

Arthroscopy has made much knee surgery easier – for the doctor and the patient. The arthroscope is a flexible tube with a light at its tip and a camera that flashes images on a video monitor.

The first advantage of arthroscopy is that the doctor needs to make only a small hole to insert the arthroscope and get a good view of the inside of the knee. In the past, a much larger cut was needed for the surgeon to see what was wrong.

Dear Abby: Thirty years ago when I was an Army officer, my wife “went crazy.”

She had an affair and wound up getting pregnant.

When I got out of the Army, she saw the man one time more before we moved and got pregnant again!

We had a child together later.

When I found out my eldest son didn’t have the correct blood type, I confronted her and she admitted it. I then had all my children tested and realized only the last one is mine. I love the other two as well as my son, and I would not destroy his or the other boys’ lives.

My wife and I had counseling and it helped some.

The problem is, I feel like my life has been destroyed and I don’t know what to do.
