Children ring in the new year Plainfield Township Park District hosts ‘Noon Year’s’ celebration

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield resident Mary Musa wanted to ring in 2016 with her 2-year-old daughter, Cecilia, but knew it would be difficult.

“I want to celebrate with the kids, but there was no way I was allowing her to stay up at midnight,” Musa said.

So instead, she headed over to the Plainfield Township Park District’s “Noon Year’s” celebration Thursday morning.

“It’s a way for the kids to be a part of the celebration,” Musa said.

The district’s third annual Noon Year’s program at the Plainfield Township Community Center included activities and snacks for 56 kids and their parents.

Children ages 1 to 8 and their parents were invited at a cost of $12 a district resident and $18 a non-resident.

The community center provided room for the district to hold its activities, Recreation Manager Misty Bartlett said.

“It’s something for the little kids to get an idea of what celebrating New Year’s Eve is like,” Bartlett said.

As the clock was approaching 12 p.m., kids and their parents counted down, “10-9-8-7-65-4-3-2-1, Happy Noon Year’s!”

Cash-paying Pace riders to see fare increase of 25 cents The HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – Pace riders who pay with cash instead of the more commonly used Ventra cards will see fares increase by 25 cents beginning Friday.

But paying more is “entirely avoidable,” according to a Pace news release, as there’s no extra charge for customers who use Ventra cards. More than 80 percent of Pace riders use Ventra al-

ready, the release stated.

The higher cash fare is designed to discourage customers from paying with cash – which costs the suburban bus agency money to collect, handle and process. The new policy is similar to those already in place for several years at other agencies such as the Illinois Tollway and the Chicago Transit Authority, according to the release.

“It’s an opportunity to spend quality time with Sophia,” Robertson said, adding that he, Sophia, his wife and their 1-year-old child were going to spend the evening with some friends.

Plainfield resident Michelle Barr was taking photos of her 1-year-old son, Jack, marching in a slightly oversized New Year’s hat, as her 4-month-old daughter, Emmy, lay in a stroller.

Barr said the two were celebrating more than the new year.

“He’s a New Year’s baby,” Barr said, noting that Jack turns 2 years old Friday.

Barr said they were attending a family party Thursday evening, but it would be tough for Jack to stay up until midnight.

“This makes it fun for him too,” Barr said.

or local residents, New Year’s resolutions are all about having the right attitude.

We spoke to a wide range of people in the community – from an 11-year-old student to the mayor of Joliet – and came away with the sense that area residents want to stay upbeat this year.

From a business owner hoping to breathe new life into downtown Joliet to a detective who intends to spend the new year focused on the love he has for his friends and family, our interviews showed that Will County is entering 2016 undaunted by the challenges that lie ahead and ready to put a positive spin on whatever it encounters. – By The Herald-News staff

The book “The Positive Dog: A Story About the Power of Positivity,” led to Art Dykstra’s New Year’s resolution for 2016.

The book’s premise is this: Inside each of us, there’s a positive dog and a negative dog. One is hopeful and optimistic. The other is negative and pessimistic.

“These dogs are always fighting,” said Dykstra, president and CEO for Trinity Services in New Lenox. “What the message is: ‘The dog that wins is the one you feed the most.’ ” “One of the things that they talk about is the difference it makes when we think about the phrases ‘have to’ versus ‘get to.’ It changes the understanding when you say I ‘get to’ go to work today, not I ‘have to’ go,” Dykstra added.

Dykstra said he loves the book so much that he has shared it with his children and grandchildren.

“I want to view life this year in respect of all the things I ‘get to’ do,” he said. “I don’t know if you’d call it a resolution. A determination, maybe.”

BOB O’DEKIRK Mayor of Joliet

Resolution: Resolve Evergreen Terrace ownership Mayor Bob O’Dekirk when he was a councilman was the biggest critic of the city’s plans to take over Evergreen Terrace, the low-income housing projects that the city successfully condemned after a 10-year legal battle.

Now that he’s mayor, Evergreen Terrace tops O’Dekirk’s to-do list for 2016.

Asked for his New Year’s resolution as mayor, O’Dekirk answered, “I think the resolution would be resolution on Evergreen Terrace – to have the legal issues put to bed once and for all and for the city to make decisions on how to proceed forward.”

O’Dekirk wants the city to get a firm grip on the finances involved in running Evergreen Terrace.

The City Council in August voted to pay $15 million, the price set by a federal jury, for Evergreen Terrace. But it still does not have control of the property.

The city continues to develop a management agreement that would put operation of the property in the hands of Holsten Real Estate Development and Management out of Chicago.

Meanwhile, the city also remains in federal court as the current owners appeal the court decisions that will turn the property over to Joliet, unless the appeal is successful.

O’Dekirk, who visited with officials with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in a trip to Washington D.C., said the federal government, which subsidizes Evergreen Terrace residents, is not making it easy for Joliet to take over the property.

Plainfield Central High School teachers Megan and Darren Kobliska received their greatest treasure two months ago.

Their first child, Katelyn Kobliska, was born. And they want to make sure they cherish every moment possible with her as the family of three moves into the new year.

“We just want to live in the moment and enjoy every milestone that we can until she grows,” Megan Kobliska said.

That may be tough when Megan returns from maternity leave to her role as a special education teacher. Darren Kobliska is a U.S. history teacher and boys golf coach. Both are involved with extracurricular activities at the school, and are taking graduate degree classes

Resolution: Bring new life to downtown Brian Florczak and his fiancée, Tania Garcia, own the Tin Roof restaurant in downtown Joliet.

They are newcomers to Joliet. But Florczak said they are big fans of the city and its downtown, its history and its architecture.

“We feel really strong about it,” Florczak said. “We feel there’s a beautiful vibrancy downtown.”

Too few people recognize it, though, Florczak said, and he plans to do something about that in 2016.

“I would say my big resolution this year is to be more active in the downtown community to help push us forward,” he said.

Florczak started in 2015. He’s become a familiar face and voice at City Hall during public meetings where downtown issues have been on the agenda. He’s spoken about the Camiros

Darren Kobliska’s parents are going to help take care of Katelyn, but Megan Kobliska said the new parents are keen on quickly finishing up work at school every day to spend time with their daughter.

“We’re continuing to be involved as teachers, but parents as well,” Megan Kobliska said. “We’re just going to balance our time between everything.” plan designed to redevelop downtown Joliet. He advocated for downtown during one of the city budget meetings.

Not afraid to speak realistically, Florczak has talked about vagrancy problems downtown and the challenges of doing business there. But he’s proud of his restaurant. He said the Tin Roof is passionate about providing natural ingredients on the table and at the bar.

“There’s nothing artificial from the front of the house to the back of our house,” he said.

Speaking of houses, he and Garcia are residents of the Cathedral neighborhood, which represents some of the aspects of Joliet they like best.

“That’s what attracted us most to Joliet is the architecture and the history,” he said. “The Cathedral area is a very historic neighborhood.”

Resolution: Enjoy the good things Shawn Filipiak has been a Joliet police officer for more than 20 years. The longtime investigator wants to spot more details in 2016.

“My resolution for 2016 will be to pay attention – to pay attention to the

small things in life, to pay attention to family and friends,” Filipiak said. “That’s what you learn as a police officer – the details matter.”

Filipiak feels modern life keeps everyone busy enough that people need to make an effort to pause and reflect on what’s important – whether it’s a big moment or a little one.

“We’re seeing so much negativity, it’s easy to dwell on that, but that isn’t what I want to remember,” Filipiak said. “The time I spend with my wife and my daughter before she’s grown up and gone, that’s better.”

Matt Kajmowicz, 11, plans to boost his learning next year.

Kajmowicz is a fifth-grade student at Taft School District 90 in Lockport. His New Year’s resolutions are to become more knowledgeable and read more.

“I want to get smarter,” he said.

Reading has become a favorite activity for Kajmowicz, who wants to start reading longer books.

He said he’s tackled reading a seventh-grade level book and wants to read books in higher grade levels as well.

He said his favorite kind of book to read is realistic fiction. One book Kajmowicz said he read recently was “Peak” by Roland Smith. The book is about a teenager who climbs Mount Everest.

Kajmowicz has attended Taft School District 90 all his life. He said he likes gym and his favorite subject is math.

The New Year’s holidays are his favorite time of the year because he and his family visit Michigan to meet with friends.

RALPH PORTWOOD Union worker

Resolution: Lose weight, improve relations with Springfield Stateville Correctional Center correctional officer Ralph Portwood has one of the most common personal New Year’s resolutions: lose more weight.

But he would also like for Springfield to help him and his coworkers.

“My resolution would be for the state of Illinois to have a balanced budget, and for us to negotiate a fair six-year contract for my brothers and sisters that work in state services,” he said.

Portwood was one of many state unionized workers who rallied against Gov. Bruce Rauner’s agenda in June.

KIALA COTTON Joliet teen

Resolution: Keep busy, stay positive during new adventure Kiala Cotton spent her childhood surrounded by friends and family at the Warren-Sharpe Community Center on the city’s South Side.

But next year, the 17-year-old Joliet West High School student will be the farthest away she’s ever been from the youth center, her mother, her twin sister and her other siblings when she moves to attend junior college in Indianapolis.

That’s why two of her New Year’s resolutions will be to “keep myself busy” and “keep negative thoughts out of my mind,” as she misses everyone,

“One thing I’d like to change, work-wise, is the relationship between employees and administration,” he said. “We have a voice, but it’s a muzzled voice. I’d like that to get better.”

The community center has been like a “second home” to her, with Kay Bolden, the center’s executive director, having helped raise her from the age of 5.

Cotton said she wants to attend college for veterinary medicine and join her new school’s track and softball teams, too.

Resolution: Expand church initiatives, manage stress For the new year, the Rev. Larry Tyler, 55, of Matteson, wants to expand the outreach efforts of Second Baptist Church in Joliet and manage his own stress so he can be more emotionally available to others.

Tyler, a 22-year leader of Second Baptist Church, said one of his New Year’s resolutions is to strengthen and expand initiatives to overcome the disconnect been society and the church.

“I resolve to try to build bridges between the church and society to overcome this growing disconnect,” he said.

Examples of those initiatives include improving church staff and resources in order to improve a community after-school program, a weekly Blessed Table soup kitchen and food pantry giveaway and weekly anti-violence basketball ministry for young teens and adults.

He also resolves to solicit and seek funding to help those nonprofit programs.

He believes people in society today are more stressed and he wants to find ways to effectively manage his own stress so he can be more helpful and emotionally available to others in need.

NEW LENOX – The Lincoln-Way School District 210 superintendent sent a statement Thursday that lamented the legal actions of a local watchdog group.

The Board of Education is aware of the lawsuit from Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite but it would be inappropriate for them to comment on it, according to the statement

sent by Superintendent Scott Tingley on Thursday afternoon.

“While we respect the citizens’ right to pursue such action, we are saddened they have chosen this path,” the statement read.

JOLIET – A Joliet teenager and his mother were arrested early Wednesday just hours after allegedly taking part in a mob attack on the city’s South Side in which one of them fired a gun at a 31-year-old man, police Brian M. said.

Michalek The incident happened in the 400 block of Sehring Drive in Joliet.

Brian M. M i c h a l e k , Josephine 19, of the 400 D. Michalek block of North H i c k o r y Street, was arrested during a traffic stop after the incident and was brought in for questioning. Michalek is charged with aggravated battery, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm.

His mother, Josephine D. Michalek, 45, also was picked up by the Will County Sheriff’s Office on charges of felony mob action, aggravated assault and disorderly conduct for brandishing a crowbar-type object for her alleged part in the incident.

She was scheduled to appear in bond court Thursday.

Brian Michalek’s bond was set at $500,000, of which 10 percent is needed for him to post bail.

Multiple witnesses at the scene were able to provide Will County sheriff’s detectives with information, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. Witnesses said they saw a pickup truck and a dark-colored minivan pulled up on the street, and several people exited the vehicles with bats, steel pipes and bricks. One had a handgun, they said.

ROCKDALE – A Rockdale man is wanted by the Will County Sheriff’s Office on a drug-induced h o m i c i d e charge.

S h a w n Eikey, 21, was released from Shawn Eikey jail recently after pleading guilty to two drug charges in November and was given four years probation, according to court records.

Additional case information regarding the drug-induced homicide charge was not available. Kathy Hoffmeyer, spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office, said Thursday the case is sealed.

Detectives declined to comment when asked to provide a reason for sealing the case, she added. She said the incident occurred in Joliet.

According to court records, Eikey in November was charged with two counts of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance for instances in May and June when he alleged delivered a powerful opiate painkiller known as hydromorphone.

The Will County Cooperative Police Assistance Team led the investigation into Eikey in November, Hoffmeyer said.

Eikey had not been arrested as of Thursday afternoon, Hoffmeyer said.

“We’ve seen a lot of the agents that service the Channahon-Minooka area are not based here, so we hope having an office here will benefit our customers,” she said.

The village also has annexed property on the northeast side of I-55 at Bluff Road where a 2-million-square-foot warehouse will be constructed beginning in the spring.

“It’s a farm field right now, so we’ll broaden our tax base without adding any kids to the school district,” Schumacher said.

Improvements at the interchange will be implemented without using state money.

The developer will pay all real estate taxes, which 11 taxing bodies have agreed to rebate back to the village to pay off the bonds that will be issued for the project, according to Schumacher.

MINOOKA – Construction is scheduled to start in the spring on the long-awaited McEvilly Road bike path.

“It’s [for] recreation, but more importantly, addresses safety hazards with kids walking on the hill,” Mayor Pat Brennan said.

The steep road has ravines on both sides, but the path will allow cyclists and pedestrians to go from Lions Park to the south side of the DuPage River in Channahon.

Both Grundy and Will counties have committed funds to the project, which was slated to be underway last year.

Also in 2016, after 11 years of meeting in the Junior High School, Village Christian Church will open its own worship center on Bell Road.

“It’s more than a building to us – it’s an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of many people,” the church said in a statement posted on its website.

The church will be located near the Westwind subdivision, which continued developing in 2015.

“We’re maintaining [the limit] of 30 houses built in a year,” Brennan said.

The village also recently annexed the Sunset Club subdivision east of the municipal building and has considered building a riverwalk there.

“That will be in the planning stages this year. I wouldn’t expect any construction in 2016,” Brennan said.

Airgas will open a $20 million manufacturing facility in the Grundy County portion of the village in January.

Grainger Industrial Supply has bought more than 50 acres next to the Airgas property and is considering building another warehouse there, according to Brennan.

Brennan said local retailers got a jump on the new year, when a pet store, a candy store and a music store opened in the past two months. Village staff also are keeping an eye on the new Hampton Inn & Suites on Bob Blair Road which opened in mid-December.

“If it maintains at least 73 percent capacity for this year, there will be plans for another hotel across the street,” Brennan said.

The hotel will host a Grundy County Chamber Business After Hours from 5 to 7 p.m.

OBITUARIES ROBERT B. BAILEY Robert B. “Bob” Bailey, age 69, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015, surrounded by his loving family.

Robert is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joanne (nee Jankowski); children, Patrick (Kim) Bailey, Greta (Todd) Erbs and Rob (Kellie) Bailey; grandchildren, Drew, Jack, Will and Thomas Bailey, Alex, Emily and Natalie Erbs, Abbey, Alyssa and Adam Bailey; brother, Charles (Jean) Bailey; brothers-in-law, Rollie Mudron and Tony (Therese) Marino; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Margaret (nee Komar) Bailey.

Bob loved being a husband, dad and grandpa. He was an avid golfer, fisherman and lifelong Cubs fan.

He was a Purple Heart veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps during Vietnam. Bob earned his pilot’s license in 1989.

Bob was co-owner and operator of Joliet United Auto for over 30 years along with his brother, Charlie.

His spirit lives on in all of us.

A Celebration of Bob’s life will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, with prayers in the funeral home chapel at 9:20 a.m. then driving in procession to the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus for a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 10 a.m.

GARY D. BENEFIELD Gary Dale Benefield, 69, passed away Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015, at Russellville Hospital.

Gary was born in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, and was raised in the Oak Grove Community in Alabama.

He attended Union Jr. High School and graduated from Phil Campbell High School in 1964.

After graduation, Gary moved to Lockport, Illinois, and worked as a heavy equipment operator.

He was a 45-year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 150, and a proud supporter of the United Engineers Party. He served the membership as a business representative for over 20 years. He pulled extra duty by spending his off time organizing unrepresented workers. His career was devoted to helping others, whether it be a union member with a grievance or a non-union worker exploited by his employer.

Gary spent his retirement attempting to help many who needed a second chance, even if they had already been given a second and third chance by their own friends and family. Gary lived his life on the level and treated everyone as a brother.

He was a past Master of Spruce Pine Lodge No. 608, the Cahaba Shrine and the Operating Engineers Square Club.

The family will receive friends at Pinkard Funeral Home, Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Funeral services will be in the chapel at 1 p.m. Burial will be in East Franklin Cemetery.

Survivors include the mother of his children, Norma Benefield; children, Sherry Isbell (Jeff), Steven Benefield (Melissa) and Tammy Hellman (Robert); and sister, Carolyn Grissom.

Newly released emails reveal coordination after teen’s death 11 CHICAGO – The Chicago mayor’s office, police and the body that investigates police shootings closely coordinated their response in the months after a white officer fatally shot a black teenager in 2014, emails released Thursday revealed.

The messages clearly indicate that advisers to Mayor Rahm Emanuel knew within months that the case could be politically explosive.

Emanuel to resign. The officer has been charged with murder and pleaded not guilty this week at his arraignment.

Emanuel has denied ever seeing the video before its release, a contention many activists have said they do not believe. The emails do not appear to contradict Emanuel’s claim, although they show how City Hall grew increasingly concerned that the video could pose a major public-relations problem.

In early December 2014,

Scott Ando, head of the Independent Police Review Authority – publicly touted by the mayor as uniquely independent in its probes of police shootings – singled out the case. He sent an email to the mayor’s deputy chief of staff, Janey Rountree, with a link to a website that raised questions about police accounts of the shooting.

Emanuel spokesman Adam Collins sent a flurry of emails about media inquiries into video of the shooting. His

subject line on a Dec. 10, 2014, email to fellow Emanuel staffers included the headline in one Chicago newspaper: “If Chicago police have video of teen shooting, let’s see it: advocates.”

The risk that a publicly released video could blow up not just locally but also nationally was made by lawyers from McDonald’s family, who reached out to the city about a settlement in early 2015, just over a month before Emanuel’s re-election.

Survived by her loving and devoted husband, Kris Poppe; her four children, Krista, Maeley, Sydney and Daniel. Her parents, Richard “Yug”and Nancy (nee Whitaker) Yudzentis; her brother, Frank (Jayne nee Gardner) Yudzentis. Richard Kenneth Selinger, also known as “Fuzzy” to his close friends and family, passed away at the Hospice House in Joliet, Illinois. His long battle with cancer came to end on Dec. 27, 2015 and he is now at peace.

Richard is survived by his loving wife, Irene Selinger nee Sarcletti; his son, Michael Selinger; and his two daughters, Laurie Heidbreder and husband John, Susan Kezele and husband Brian. Richard also has five grandchildren, Dustin Caley, Abigail Selinger, Isaac Selinger, Rylan Kezele and Brycen Kezele.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Gertrude Selinger as well as his brother, Terrance Selinger.

Richard worked as a butcher in various places in Joliet and he then later worked in maintenance at Will County Sheriff’s Office, retiring from both. Richard was a long-time member of the Irving Athletic Club, and enjoyed playing cards. Along with working hard, Richard also enjoyed many sports. He loved the Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks and Cubs and many times could be found watching a game in any room in the house. But most of all, Richard loved spending his time with his grandchildren and would take every opportunity to make memories with them.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Several top aides to Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson resigned on Thursday, citing frustration with the influence of the retired neurosurgeon’s business manager and questioning his readiness for the White House.

Barry Bennett and Doug Watts, both seasoned political operatives, stepped down with less than five weeks before voters in Iowa begin the nominating process with the state’s Feb. 1 caucuses.

Bennett was Carson’s campaign manager. Watts was communications director. But Bennett said Carson’s longtime business manager, Armstrong Williams, is the adviser who has Carson’s ear, even though Williams does not have a formal role in the campaign.

Carson is “one of the smartest men I’ve ever worked for,” Bennett said, but added that he believes Carson has become Williams’ “script reader.”

10th suspect arrested in Paris attacks probe

BRUSSELS – Belgian authorities on Thursday announced the arrest of a 10th person in connection with last month’s bloodbath in Paris and said six others had been detained and questioned over a suspected plot to stage new attacks in Brussels during the holidays.

Law enforcement officials said there is no known connection between the two investigations, but they highlight the role of Belgium

as a hotbed of Islamic radicalism in Europe.

Authorities said a Belgian national born in 1993 and identified only as Ayoub B. has been charged with terrorist murder and participation in the activities of a terrorist group for his suspected involvement in the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris, claimed by the Islamic State group.

The man was detained Wednesday following a search in the Molenbeek neighborhood of Brussels, where some of the Paris attackers lived, including suspected ringleader Abdelhamid Abaaoud.

Nine people in Belgium already had been arrested in connection with the attacks, in which 130 people lost their lives and hundreds more were injured.

Police in Munich warn of ‘imminent threat’ of attack BERLIN – Police in Munich warned of a “serious, imminent threat” by Islamist extremists wanting to commit a terror attack on New Year’s Eve and asked people to stay away from the city’s main train station and a second train station in the city’s Pasing neighborhood.

Police spokesman Werner Kraus told The Associated Press early Friday that “we have serious information and different tips about an imminent attack.”

“After evaluating the situation, we started evacuating the train stations and also asked partygoers to stay away from big crowds outside,” Kraus added.

By JON GAMBRELL The Associated Press DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – A 63-story luxury hotel was engulfed in flames even as a massive New Year’s fireworks display kicked off at the world’s tallest skyscraper nearby, while tens of thousands of people whistled and cheered at early Friday’s pyrotechnics.

Just minutes before the fireworks began in the Gulf emirate of Dubai, large explosions could be heard from inside the burning building, which was cloaked in thick black smoke. It was not clear what caused the blasts.

At least 14 people were slightly injured, and one person suffered a heart attack from the smoke and over-crowding during an evacuation late Thursday, according to the Dubai Media Office. The statement said another person was moderately injured, without elaborating further. No children were among those injured, it said.

Around 1 million people had been expected to gather around the Burj Khalifa skyscraper to watch the fireworks. Dubai’s economy depends heavily on tourism, and New Year’s is one of the busiest seasons, drawing people from around the world to watch the fireworks that the emirate puts on at the world’s tallest tower, as well as the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab and over a man-made palm-shaped island.

Organizers had installed 400,000 LED lights on the Burj Khalifa and used some 1.6 tons of fireworks for the seven-minute extravaganza. Two years ago on New Year’s, Dubai broke the world record for the largest fireworks display.

The fire engulfed the Address Downtown, one of the most upscale hotels and residences in Dubai, which was likely to have been packed with people because of its clear view of the 905-yard tall Burj Khalifa.

shopping area with walkways that connect to the Burj Khalifa and the Middle East’s largest mall, the Dubai Mall.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire, which ran up the 63-story building. The Address is a 991 foot-tall skyscraper that has 626 luxury apartments and 196 hotel rooms, according to Skyscraper Center, which tracks such buildings.

Dubai’s Media Office wrote on its official Twitter account that four teams of firefighters were working to put out the blaze. They said the fire appears to have originated on a 20th floor terrace.

The fire broke out about two hours before the midnight fireworks display was set to begin. To manage the crowds, Dubai police had closed off some roads and the metro before the fire broke out.

Nearly an hour after the fire began, some onlookers began to leave while others stood, pressed against crowd barricades, watching the blaze.

Lawmakers need to prioritize in 2016 A slew of new state laws into effect today, the first day of 2016.

In the past, these lists of new state laws were known as things lawmakers found to be more important than pension reform. This year, the list is known as things lawmakers found more important than passing a state budget.

Undoubtedly, some of the new laws are significant and meaningful.

For example: • SB 1304, which requires more accountability of law enforcement and sets standards for the use of body cameras.

• SB 1846, which requires the state to establish a system to help communities missing adults with Alzheimer’s, dementia or other cognitive impairments.

• HB 2462, which allows residents of nursing homes or their representatives to use surveillance systems in their rooms at their own expense to combat abuse.

• HB 303, which makes severance agreements for public bodies eligible under the state’s Freedom of Information Act. However, some new laws for 2016 make you shake your head and ask out loud, “This is what the people we elect do instead of serious state

work?” For example: • SB 0681, which designates a number of new toxic weeds, including plant bush honeysuckle and giant hogweed.

• HB 1666, which establishes that forklift license plates need not be visible at all times.

• HB 3788, which extends the time a car rental company can contest a toll violation.

• SB 1424, which lets garbage trucks use amber flashing or oscillating lights.

As we enter 2016, we implore lawmakers in Springfield to tackle the meaningful and not the mundane.

Atop the meaningful list is passing a state budget (this fiscal year’s and next), passing legal pension reform, establishing term limits for lawmakers and making Illinois more business friendly.

This is an election year, so we, the voters, need to hold lawmakers more accountable for the shenanigans in Springfield.

Otherwise, lawmakers will continue to pass needless legislation, such as HB 208, which makes pumpkin pie the official state pie as of today.

It’s going to be a sad day for apple pie lobbyists.

A first for the Joliet area in girls cross country, an area school’s first visit to a state championship football game, another area school’s first visit to the boys state basketball finals, a repeat runnerup finish in girls volleyball. An NCAA men’s volleyball championship match for the ages.

Team and individual girls state bowling titles, several state wrestling champions, a three-peat champion in girls state track and re-

markable individual performances in state track and girls state swimming.

All of that is but a small sampling of the memorable stories 2015 brought to the Joliet area sports community.

For our story of the year, however, we selected the death of our legend, coach Gordie Gillespie. We never will be able to replace him.

Following is the rundown of what we ranked as our top 10 stories for 2015, along with an impressive honorable-mention list. field finals.

From a team perspective, the Lincoln-Way East girls won their third straight state championship. The Griffins’ Julia Junkroski won the pole vault. Bolingbrook edged East by .01 of a second to win the 4 x 100 relay, and the Griffins also were second in the 4 x 400 relay.

GORDIE GILLESPIE DIES

There are legends, and then there is Gordie Gillespie.

Although official declaration never has been made of the greatest coach of all time, there are thousands who played for Gillespie and/or followed his career at Lewis, Joliet Catholic and St. Francis who say without hesitation that he is in a class by himself.

Gillespie died Feb. 28 at age 88 after a long illness. His death elicited tributes from far and wide. His teams enjoyed unparalleled success in baseball, football and basketball.

He won 2,402 games in the three sports during a career spanning 59 years. He coached teams to the ultimate level in 110 – yes, 110 – sports seasons.

He was inducted into 18 halls of fame.

Yet, despite all those accomplishments, what made him “Gordie” was his humility, the man he was. Along with all those victories in three sports, that is what will be remembered most about him.

A Chicago native who starred in college basketball for DePaul coach Ray Meyer, Gillespie arrived in Joliet in 1950 and in the 65 years since, he brought this community to sports heights never imagined.

Whether it was coaching Joliet Catholic football, or Lewis basketball or baseball, or baseball, football or women’s basketball at St. Francis, it didn’t matter. Gillespie’s teams won, and his players ran through the wall for him.

They didn’t have to be asked.

Gillespie retired from coaching in 2010 with a 2,4021,170-8 record in the three sports combined. That’s a .672 winning percentage.

The Angels were shorter than virtually every opponent and did not have a superstar, but they showed what a team could do that played together.

• In the swim – Plainfield Co-op’s Carly Kramer, a Plainfield North senior who will swim for one of the nation’s elite college programs at Arizona State, won the 100 butterfly in the girls state swimming and diving meet to become her school’s first state champion in any sport.

• Bill Zimmer dies – Gordie Gillespie was not the only local coaching legend to die in 2015. Longtime Lockport football and wrestling coach Bill Zimmer, father of Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer, passed away Aug. 11 at age 84.

Mike Zimmer, in his second season at the helm, has guided the Vikings into the NFC playoffs.

• High Flyers – The Lewis women’s basketball team won its first 23 games and earned its first-ever No. 1 national ranking. The Flyers eventually reached the NCAA Division II Elitle Eight and concluded their season with a 31-3 record. Coach Lisa Carlsen, who later left to become coach at Northern Illinois and was succeeded by Kristen Gillespie, was named Division II Coach of the Year. Jamie Johnson and Mariyah Brawner-Henley were named All-Americans.

• Softball runnerup – The Lincoln-Way East softball team scored supersectional and semifinal victories by 10-plus runs but then was blanked by Marist in the Class 4A championship game to finish second.

• JJC baseball second – The Joliet Junior College

baseball team claimed its third NJCAA Division III national runnerup finish, falling to Tyler, Texas in the title game. The Wolves’ TJ Condon, a Minooka graduate, was named NJCAA Division III Player of the Year.

• Cheers – The Lincoln-Way East cheerleading team repeated as state champion in the large-team division when it edged Lockport, 93.73-93.60, in the finals.

• Lengthy tenures end – Retirements among some of the longest-tenured administrators and coaches in the area were front and center with Jim Boudouris leaving as Romeoville athletic director, Lawrence Thompson Jr. as Lockport basketball coach and John Jackson as Plainfield Central football coach.

• Brave(s) new world – Pitcher Mike Foltynewicz, a Minooka graduate and a former first-round draft pick of the Houston Astros, was traded to the Atlanta Braves in January, the key piece in a trade that brought outfielder Evan Gattis to the Astros. Foltynewicz pitched a decent amount with the parent Braves this season.

• Balls and strikes – Joliet West graduate Mark Carlson was on the umpiring crew selected to work the National League Divisional Series between the Cubs and Cardinals and then was selected to work the World Series between the Royals and Mets. It was the first World Series assignment of his career.

• Best sixth woman – Joliet Catholic graduate Allie Quigley, a guard with the Chicago Sky, was named WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year for a second straight season.

• 76ers rookie – Lockport graduate Richaun Holmes, coming out of Bowling Green, was the 37th overall selection in the NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers and is seeing some playing time as a rookie.

• On the Marks – Following his senior season at Boise State, Plainfield Central graduate Derrick Marks was named Mountain West Player of the Year. He also was an honorable mention All-American.

• High School Heisman winner – Lemont senior cross country and track runner Taylor Campos was named the female national winner for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award at the Play Station Theater in New York City.

The Wendy’s Heisman Award recognizes Campos’ excellence academically, athletically and for her involvement in the Lemont community.

• IESA champs – The Laraway Grade School seventh-grade boys basketball team won their fourth Illinois Elementary School Association state championship in seven years. In IESA baseball, St. Paul won another 1A title, Coal City won the 3A crown and St. Raymond was second in 2A. Hickory Creek was the AA softball champ.

Joliet West drops tough semifinal loss to Manual

By JEFF DE GRAW Shaw Media Correspondent PONTIAC – Words cannot describe the intensity, emotion and effort of Joliet West’s boys basketball team in its semifinal game against Peoria Manual at the 85th Pontiac Holiday Tournament.

It took overtime before Manual came away with a 7473 victory Thursday.

“I’m very proud of my boys,” West coach Nick DiForti said. “I couldn’t be happier, except for the call at the end, of how we played.”

The call at the end occurred in overtime after Teyvion Kirk scored with 26 seconds left to put West up 73-71.

After a timeout by Manual (10-0) with 10 seconds remaining, Da’Monte Williams attempted a 3-point shot and missed, but a foul was called on Elijah Ward with only 1.2 seconds left. Williams hit all three free throws to give him a game- and career-high 37

points.

The Tigers (9-2) never were in the bonus situation in the second half and overtime, as Manual was called for only six team fouls.

That point got the attention of DiForti, who received a technical foul for pointing out the 8-1 discrepancy in team fouls with 7:35 left in the fourth quarter.

“Our kids are learning quickly,” DiForti said. “This is all such a learning experience and I know that Manual knows they got away with one today.”

The intensity and emotion was evident from the start – great defense, pressure and tough shots. Neither team had more than a three-point lead at any part of the game.

West held an 18-15 first-quarter lead as Kirk put in a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Not to be outdone, Michael Smith hit a 3-point buzzer shot to make it 31-31 at halftime.

Kirk hit another key shot with 50 seconds left in regulation to tie it at 65 and Williams missed a 3-point attempt to send the game to overtime.

Trevian Bell led the Tigers with 24 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Kirk added 14 points and Michael Smith came off the bench to score 10 points.

“Trevian was outstanding,” DiForti said. “He came out to prove a point tonight.

There has not been a lot of talk about him and he wanted people to notice. He is a great team player. Teyvion also got it going late and stepped up after some foul trouble early. I really have to credit all of the bench players who came in and made big contributions.”

Tigers win consolation title

By JEFF DE GRAW Shaw Media Correspondent PONTIAC – Plainfield North’s boys basketball team hit 13 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter to beat Bloom Township, 59-55, to win Thursday’s consolation championship at the 85th Pontiac Holiday Tournament.

The Tigers hit 20 of 22 free throws, compared to only 12 of 20 for Bloom. North, which won it’s second consolation title in three years, ends the tournament with a 3-1 record.

“It’s about time,” North coach Bob Krahulik said of the free throw success. “We played well defensively the last four minutes and executed our offensive to get to the line.

“This shows that we can

play with just about any team in the state. We are a senior-laden team, but Kevin (Krieger) is the only one with significant minutes from last year.

“These kids are still learning to play with each other and are gaining confidence with every game. We didn’t close out some games earlier in the season and then we went through the sickness bug, but when you can play with a team like Joliet West and the others here in Pontiac, it shows you can play with anyone.”

Krieger ended the game with 21 points, hitting nine of 10 free throws, with seven of those coming in the fourth quarter. Henry Thompson added 12 points along with five rebounds and Richie Elias chipped in 11 points.

points.

The game was within five points on either side throughout as the teams were tied at 14 after the first quarter, and North held a 29-27 lead at the half. North shot 44 percent from the field (18 of 41) but was only 3 of 15 from the 3-point line.

Because of the weather delays that pushed the tournament to four days, the Tigers were the only team to play two early morning games. They played the hosts Wednesday in another 8 a.m. contest.

“This will really help as we get ready for the remainder of our conference (Southwest Prairie) and then on to the state tournament that is wide open in our sectional,” Krahulik said. “It will also be nice not to play at 8 a.m.”

Smith and Tabyous Casterberry really showed improvement during the tournament.

“This was a lot of fun,” Smith said. “We came in confident and always trying to get better. We are brothers on this team with a great group and that is what makes this season.”

Two of the players who played major roles last season as sophomores and are big reasons the Tigers are where they are at are Kirk and Bell.

“We wanted to come to Pontiac and make a big impact,” Kirk said. “It was a good tournament, and we’re a little disappointed, but we have such a great team that all work hard on improving.”

“I’m still pretty new to the game of basketball,” Bell said.

“I really didn’t start seriously playing till my freshman year, so I’m working all the time to get better and my teammates have been a big help.

Hopefully we will carry this forward.”

Brawner-Henley sets Lewis rebounding mark SUBMITTED REPORTS ROMEOVILLE – Mariyah Brawner-Henley became Lewis’ all-time rebounding leader as the No. 7 Flyers (11-1) beat Cumberland, 81-60, in a nonconference game Wednesday.

Brawner-Henley needed 10 rebounds to pass the old mark of 1,043, which was set by Julie Fruendt in 1984. Brawner-Henley grabbed her 10th board in the third quarter to break the record and now has 1,046 rebounds.

In addition, the returning All-American had 28 points, three steals and two blocks.

She also has 115 career blocks, which ranks third at Lewis.

Jessica Kelliher recorded career highs with 29 points and 12 rebounds while Alyssa Siwek added nine assists.

The No. 10 Fighting Saints (131) beat Ave Maria, 81-54, one day after capturing an 88-56 win over St. Thomas. Against Ave Maria, Charnelle Reed had a game-high 25 points. Kamari Jordan and Jordan Giddings each finished with 14 points, Alexis Brown scored 10 points and Christina Ekhomu added six assists and three steals. In the victory over St. Thomas, Jordan scored 20 points and had seven assists, Giddings added 18 points and Reed had 11 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and five steals.

“I guess it says something if you come away a little disappointed with third place,” Lemont coach Rick Runaas said.

“But it is nice to walk away with the third-place plaque.

“After we beat Downers Grove North on Tuesday night, I thought we were going in a good direction. After these last two games, I’m not sure who we can count on, especially off the bench.”

Now we have one at Christmas time.”

The Hilltoppers finished off what became a breeze through the Romeoville Christmas Classic when they trapped Glenbard South into submission, 56-37, in Thursday afternoon’s title game.

JCA posted four one-sided victories, thanks to stingy defense, en route to the title, but as coach Joe Gura noted, “Every game, it was a different combination defensively.”

Glenbard South (9-4) shot well in the first quarter quarter and led, 15-11, at the stop. At that point, senior guard and tournament MVP Jalen Jackson had scored nine of the Hilltoppers’ 11 points.

Then came the 1-3-1 half-court trap that threw the Raiders’ offense completely out of kilter. To go along with that, Jackson kept scoring. He finished the first half with 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting as the Hilltoppers (9-2) streaked to a 33-21 lead.

“You look at the scoreboard, and he [Jackson] has as many points as the other team,” JCA all-tournament selection Harry Davis smiled. “That’s really good.”

Glenbard South hit only 3 of 15 shots in the second quarter, and things got no better in the third quarter, when the Raiders were 2 of 9 and fell behind, 43-26.

“We never lose confidence in our defense,” Jackson said. “Defense wins games for us. When we get our trap working and get running ourselves, that’s when we can get the easy baskets.

And when you step on somebody early, that kills their confidence.”

“The thing about this game was we didn’t play man-to-man defense, which was our staple at the start of this tournament,” Gura said. “They [Raiders] have good shooters and a good inside game. So we went boxer [the 1-3-1 zone], and even when we trapped, we dropped back into special [a zone with a matchup concept] instead of man.

“Our defense was stellar all through the tournament. We’re a pretty good defensive team.”

Jackson finished with 28 points on 10-of-21 shooting and 5 of 6 free throws.

Pete Ragen chipped in nine points, 10 rebounds and a handful of steals. Davis scored seven points.

JCA had opportunities for a bigger game offensively but missed numerous inside shots. The Hilltoppers hit 20 of 49 field goal attempts for 40.8 percent and

By BRENT W. NEW The Associated Press DENVER – Jonathan Toews scored a power-play goal at 3:29 of overtime, Patrick Kane extended his NHL points lead with a goal and two assists and the Blackhawks beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 on Thursday night.

Artem Anisimov and Andrew Desjardins also scored for the Hawks, which snapped a four-game losing streak to Colorado. Scott Darling, meanwhile, filled in for starter Corey Crawford and had 26 saves.

Colorado erased a 3-1 deficit as Erik Johnson tied the game with less than 5 minutes remaining in regulation.

Toews then answered on a man advantage after the Avalanche were called for too many players on the ice.

Carl Soderberg and Cody McLeod scored for Colorado.

Semyon Varlamov had 39 saves for Colorado and suffered his

first loss in nine consecutive decisions against the Hawks.

Before Toews’ game-winner, Kane provided much of the spark. He ended 2015 with 56 points in 39 games.

On Thursday against the Avalanche, the same team that ended his 26-game point streak earlier in the month, he had two assists, including on Toews’ goal. He also finished a 2-on-1 power-play chance early in the second to extend the lead to 3-1.

The Hawks (22-13-4) are now 22-8-4 when Kane gets a point and 0-5-0 when he doesn’t.

Anisimov was the first Chicago player to beat Varlamov this season. The Colorado netminder had 29 saves in a 3-0 win over the Blackhawks on Dec. 15 and nine stops on Thursday before Anisimov tied the game at 1-1 with 1:28 left in the first period.

Desjardins and Kane followed suit and scored in the first 4:20 of the second period to extend the lead to 3-1.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Deshaun Watson turned in another stellar two-way performance, running for one touchdown, passing for another and accounting for 332 yards to lead top-ranked Clemson to a 37-17 victory over Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl semifinal game Thursday night.

Helping people look their best Plainfield-based makeup artist shares her story and tips

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield-based certified makeup artist Paula Heckenast said she emailed Chicago photographer Todd Rosenberg – whose credits include Sports Illustrated covers – six times before he finally responded.

The response, Heckenast said, read like this: “I’m not trying to be rude, but please stop emailing me. By the way, are you available Wednesday?”

Heckenast said she now assists Rosenburg several times a month, mostly at corporate assignments, where she makes his subjects look their very best.

Rosenberg, who said he also shoots regularly for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Lyric Opera of Chicago and The Anti-Cruelty Society, praised Heckenast’s professionalism, energy and attentiveness to clients, both before and during the shoot.

“She’s constantly checking on hair and makeup. She makes sure the subject looks really good when photographed,” Rosenberg said.

“In a world where there’s a lot of retouching and refixing, she eliminates a lot of that need.”

Heckenast, who travels to locations, has done makeup for brides, boudoir shoots and even Wizard World.

“They booked me to go into the green room and hang out and do touch-ups for celebrities,” Heckenast said.

Just claiming to be a makeup artist doesn’t make a person one, said Heckenast, who began working under the name City Lights Makeup Artistry in 2008. For instance, a true artist can size up a person in two seconds and know precisely which color eye shadow to use, she said.

For Heckenast, the application of makeup is an innate ability that she’s “fed as much as possible.”

She continually educates herself on products, techniques and great makeup artists of the past. She is

also knowledgeable about – and practices – pristine sanitation.

“It’s [a makeup artist] someone who looks at building a professional career as opposed to, ‘It’s so cool I can do makeup,’ kind of thing,” Heckenast said.

But a makeup artist must be skilled in more than just foundation and eyelashes. She asks each client their preferences in everything from eyeliner to blush and assesses for allergies, even asking for clients to bring their own makeup in severe cases.

Makeup artists must click with all personality types, Heckenast said.

“You have to be able to read people,” Heckenast said. “You have to know when to stay more reserved and in your shell, and you can feel that as you go. You start out professional, ‘Hi, how are you,’ and see how the other person answers.

Some people will talk all day and

others clearly don’t want to talk.”

Although Heckenast always enjoyed playing with makeup, she never realized it could become her career until a friend needed a ride to makeup school. Heckenast said she wound up sitting through orientation and decided to attend, too.

She then went online and researched ways to build up her portfolio, constantly promoted herself, and freely shared her knowledge and services in the form of gift certificates for fundraisers, speaking at cosmetology schools and plain old-fashioned advice to whomever asked.

For Heckenast staunchly disagrees with the attitude that assisting other artists in their professional growth is death to one’s own career.

“If you want to grow and expand your horizons,” Heckenast said, “helping other people has to be very near the top of your priority list.”

PLAINFIELD – A high-energy performance of improvisational comedy sketches at Troy Middle School this month taught students about low-energy ways to live and play.

Professional actors with The Resource Force and the National Theatre for Children used two interactive performances – one for seventh graders and the other for eighth – to teach about natural resources and energy conservation.

The actors also delivered free sets of personalized materials for TMS science teachers, such as digital games and activities for the classroom, and energy efficiency kits for students to take home. The kits included energy-saving light bulbs, water-saving shower heads and power strips.

JOLIET – Joliet Township High School Band Director Michael Fiske has been selected to receive the 2016 Mary Hoffman Award of Excellence from the Illinois Music Education Association in January.

Fiske will be presented with the award at the 2016 Illinois Music Education Conference to be held in Peoria. The ILMEA Board of Directors will honor Fiske at the opening of the conference with the presentation of a plaque and Michael Fiske highlights of Fiske’s professional accomplishments.

Nominees for the award must be an ILMEA member in good standing, must have taught for at least 10 years, must be a current music educator from any level in a school in Illinois, and must have demonstrated continued teaching excellence.

Fiske has been the director of bands at Joliet Central High School since 2002. He was nominated for the Mary Hoffman Award of Excellence by band parent Sarah Bush Randolph.

I hope all of my readers have a happy and healthy 2016.

To start the year, let’s look at the winner of last year’s Keri Klinger Memorial Declarer Play of the Year award from the International Bridge Press Association.

The deal arose during the final of the World Open Pairs in Sanya, China.

The declarer was Espen Lindqvist from Norway.

After West’s one-heart overcall and North’s two-diamond response, South’s four-club rebid was a splinter, probably with a void given that his partner’s single raise made a slam very unlikely.

Against five diamonds, West led the spade 10. When that held the trick, he continued with the spade queen.

What did declarer do?

Lindqvist won with his spade ace, ruffed a spade in the dummy, discarded the heart three on the club ace, ruffed a club with the diamond 10, and led his last spade. When West followed suit, South ruffed with the diamond queen.

Then he ran the diamond nine, ruffed another club (to leave West with only hearts), and cashed his last two trumps, the ace and king.

Everyone was down to three cards.

East had kept two hearts and the club king; dummy held the heart 10-six and club six; West retained the heart K-J-8; and South had the heart A-Q-9.

Now declarer led his heart queen and unblocked dummy’s 10. West took the trick but had to lead from his heart jack-eight into Lindqvist’s ace-nine.

That was a terrific performance, taking full benefit from West’s ill-advised overcall with a weak hand, opposite a passed partner, and vulnerable.

Working outside, exercising or just enjoying the sun in any season can speed up the loss of body water. Illness with fever, diarrhea or vomiting can lead to dehydration. Anyone who is on a medication that may cause fluid loss, such as a blood-pressure-lowering diuretic, should be careful. And women who are pregnant and lactating require more fluids.

Water is the best fluid for hydration. It has no calories, sugar, salt, coloring or preservatives.

Healthy people should drink about eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day – but not all at once.

Here are some tips for staying hydrated: • Drink a glass of water when you first get up.

• Enjoy an herbal tea in the afternoon or evening.

• Carry water with you if away from home for long periods.

• Drink before you get thirsty.

• Sneak in some extra fluids by eating water-rich foods such as salads and fruit.

It’s possible to take in too much water if you have certain health conditions. These include kidney, liver or heart problems, as well as thyroid disease. You also may need to watch your fluid intake if you’re taking an NSAID drug, opiate pain medications or some antidepressants. Check with your doctor to make sure you’re getting the right amount.

Dear Dr. K: I’m in my 80s. At my last checkup, my doctor emphasized how important it is to stay hydrated. Can you explain why?

Dear Reader: Drinking fluids is crucial to staying healthy and maintaining the function of every system in your body. That includes your heart, brain and muscles. Among other things, fluids carry nutrients to your cells. They flush urine and bowel movements, both of which contain body wastes, out of your body.

If you don’t drink enough fluids, you run the risk of dehydration.

This happens when your body loses too much water – through sweating, for example. Warning signs include weakness, low blood pressure, dizziness, confusion or urine that’s dark in color. Even minimal dehydration can reduce your physical and mental capabilities.

Your body is very good at keeping you from becoming dehydrated.

When the fluid in your body starts to get low, your kidneys make less urine (assuming your kidneys are healthy). However, in hot weather your body sweats – and you can lose a lot of fluid that way. The reason your body sweats is that the evaporation of the sweat from your skin cools the body.

Older adults like you are at particular risk of becoming dehydrated. That’s especially true during summer when it’s hotter and people perspire more.

I spoke to my colleague Dr. Julian Seifter, a kidney specialist and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

He explained that older people don’t sense thirst as much as they did when they were younger. Or age may have weakened the ability of the kidneys to hang on to water. In particular, your heart, brain and kidneys are more vulnerable to the low blood pressure that often

Dear Readers: It’s 2016! A new year has arrived, bringing with it our chance for a new beginning.

Today is the day we have an opportunity to discard destructive old habits for healthy new ones, and with that in mind, I will share Dear Abby’s often-requested list of New Year’s Resolutions – which were adapted by my late mother, Pauline Phillips, from the original credo of Al-Anon: Just For Today: I will live through this day only. I will not brood about yesterday or obsess about tomorrow. I will not set far-reaching goals or try to overcome all of my problems at once.

I know that I can do something for 24 hours that would overwhelm me if I had to keep it up for a lifetime.

Just For Today: I will be happy. I will not dwell on thoughts that depress me. If my mind fills with clouds, I will chase them away and fill it with sunshine.

Just For Today: I will accept what is. I will face reality. I will correct those things that I can correct and accept those I cannot.

Just For Today: I will improve my mind. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration. I will not be a mental loafer.

Just For Today: I will make a conscious effort to be agreeable. I will be kind and courteous to those who cross my path, and I’ll not speak ill of others. I will improve my appearance, speak softly, and not interrupt when someone else is talking.

Just for today, I will refrain from improving anybody but myself.

Just For Today: I will do something positive to improve my health. If I’m a smoker, I’ll quit. If I am overweight, I will eat healthfully – if only just for today. And not only that, I will get off the couch and take a brisk walk, even if it’s only around the block.
