TROY TOWNSHIP – Two drivers were injured in the first of two truck accidents on local interstates Wednesday morning.

One lane on westbound Interstate 80 was closed in the morning because of a crash between two trucks and remained closed until the afternoon.

A ComEd box truck and Wal-Mart semitrailer crashed on westbound I-80 just west of Interstate 55 at about 8 a.m., according to police.

The drivers suffered injuries. One was airlifted by helicopter to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, while the other was taken by ambulance to Morris Hospital.

Another crash occurred Tuesday morning on Interstate 55 near Route 6, when a semitrailer went off the road and into a ditch. No one was injured.

State police said that accident was cleared and all lanes were reopened shortly after 11 a.m.

Two Will County deputies will attend New York officer’s funeral

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com NEW YORK – Two Will County sheriff’s deputies will represent the department at funeral services for a New York City police officer slain last month.

Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were ambushed Dec. 20 while sitting in their squad car on a Brooklyn street. Jet Blue has offered free airfare to law enforcement officers from across the country to attend their services.

Investigator Jeffrey Tolbert and Sgt. James Holuj will not participate in ceremonies, but will represent the department in full uniform.

“This is larger than life,” Jordan said. “It is extremely important to show our re-

spects and support when officers are killed.”

The honor guard officers will fly from O’Hare International Airport to Boston before arriving at JFK Airport in New York on Saturday morning. They are expected to return to Chicago on Monday night.

Sheriff Mike Kelley, the deputies union and supervisors unions will share the cost of Tolbert and Holuj’s transportation and lodging.

A wake will be Saturday and a funeral will be held Sunday.

More than 25,000 uniformed officers attended Ramos’ funeral last week, according to reports.

Recent Joliet shooting victims recovering

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A 22-year-old man shot Christmas Eve remains hospitalized in “critical but stable” condition, Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said Wednesday.

The Christmas Eve shooting happened in the 200 block of Harwood Street.

Police said the victim fled the scene and was later found by police inside a vehicle before being taken to the hospital.

Roechner said Wednesday detectives have established a “person of interest” in the shooting but have not made an arrest.

Another man shot Sunday is expected to make a complete

recovery, Roechner said. The 20-year-old man was sitting in his car in the 1100 block of Magnolia Avenue when he was shot and wounded in the arm, stomach and side.

Roechner said the victim identified Delvin L. Arrington, 19, who was arrested Sunday on charges of aggravated battery and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Kids celebrate new year in Plainfield

Happy Noon Year!”

Balloons dropped and noisemakers blared as 36 kids and their parents celebrated 2015 a little early at the Plainfield Township Park District’s Stream Recreation Center, 24319 Cedar Creek Lane.

The park district hosted its second annual Noon Year’s Countdown party at 11 a.m.

Wednesday for children ages 1 through 6.

Children, with the help of their moms and dads, created paper clocks, glittered 2015 signs and other crafts while enjoying cookies and other munchies before starting their own countdown to the new year.

The kids also joined the Hokey Pokey and Chicken Dance before heading to the celebration room just minutes before the clock struck noon.

“This is a really good opportunity to do something that’s not late at night,” said Plainfield resident Jacob Madden, who came with his wife and two daughters.

Madden’s family was going to a New Years Eve party Wednesday night, but planned to get home a few hours before 2015 arrived.

“It’s just as fun for us,” said Joliet resident Kristy Bonomo, whose sons Brett, 4, and Luke, 2, were enjoying snacks at the party.

Bonomo said she brought her kids to the first Noon Years Countdown party last year and they loved it.

“We have crafts and snacks and lots of celebrating,” Bonomo said. Like Madden, Bonomo said her family is going to a party, but “we won’t make it till midnight.”

The event required partici-

pants to sign up at the cost of $12 for district residents and $15 for nondistrict residents.

“We had parents saying their young kids can’t be up late,” Recreation Manager Misty Bartlett said of the de-

cision last year to start the Noon Years Countdown. “We noticed other people doing it and thought it’d be a fun thing for the kids.”

Two minutes before noon, the kids and parents headed to

a celebration room and waited for the cue to start the countdown with noisemakers and the crafts they made earlier.

After the countdown and induction of 2015, kids, such as 3-year-old Logan Herbert, jumped up, down and all around amid falling balloons.

Then, everyone gathered to toast the new year with a wine glass of apple juice.

Logan said his favorite part of the day was the countdown balloon drop. And he was looking forward to celebrating Noon Years Countdown again next year.

“I feel that children don’t really understand New Years,” said Logan’s mother Adriana Herbert, noting the early bed times for most kids. “They can learn about it through [Noon Years Countdown].”

2015: A year of planning and building

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com The year 2015 will be a rebuilding year in many ways for local communities.

Many projects that will shape the future of Joliet and other Will County communities will be under construction or in planning. Some will be completed, but most will remain in progress in the coming year.

Local officials interviewed

by Herald-News reporters in recent weeks repeatedly talked about development taking off in 2015 – a sort of throwback to pre-recession boom years, but under more modest terms.

Plainfield Mayor Michael Collins said a big-box store is likely to be announced by mid-summer.

City Administrator Ben Benson said Lockport will see more development than it has since 2006.

The 1.7 million-square foot Michelin tire distribution center under construction in Wilmington is scheduled to open mid-year.

In Minooka, a new Hampton Inn & Suites should open in 2015.

Joliet also expects to see construction start on a hotel and conference center at the Houbolt Road interchange with Interstate 80 in 2015, said Kendall Jackson, the city’s planning director. But it’s not clear if the hotel will open next year.

In 2015, Volunteers of America also plans to start building an apartment complex for homeless and low-income veterans on the former Joliet campus of Silver Cross Hospital. But the apartments will not open until 2016.

The biggest project going on in Joliet – the downtown transportation center – will remain under construction, although how fast work progresses will set the timetable for what opens in 2016.

“We’re particularly looking at late 2015 or early 2016 for the bus facility and the new train station building,” Jackson said. Those are estimates for

Still, Jackson said “hopefully 2016” will be the year the new bus and train stations open.

“It’s hard to say,” he added, noting that construction timetables must be worked out with the needs of freight trains running through downtown Joliet.

“We are somewhat at the mercy of the railroads.”

Also downtown, Joliet Junior College will work on the interior of its new building, which won’t open for classes until the fall semester of 2016.

“You can expect the interior build-out of that project to

begin in May 2015,” said Kelly Rohder, the college’s communications and external relations director.

From the outside, the downtown campus building looks done. Indeed, the exterior of the six-story, 96,000-square-foot structure was completed in June. But the timetable for interior construction is estimated at 10 months to a year.

Another downtown – New Lenox – will be reshaped if the village moves forward with plans to tear down the old Bruns’ Tavern building. The Bruns’ building has been a

landmark for decades, but has become an eyesore in recent years.

New Lenox plans redevelopment centered around its train station, which would include the demolition of other buildings, as well.

“Those buildings have been run down for so long and just the aesthetics will make people feel better about downtown,” Village Trustee Nancy Dye told the Herald-News last week.

Some plans have been years in the making and are not likely to start in 2015: a new Will County Courthouse, the Illiana

Expressway and the South Suburban Airport.

Still, 2015 should be a big year for all those plans.

Will County officials could make a final commitment to build a courthouse, which also would likely go in downtown Joliet. Illinois will start making offers on land along the path of the Illiana Expressway – to the chagrin of some landowners who would rather not see the highway built. And, the state is taking another step to build an airport by trying to line up private investors to join the plan.

Water, Route 52 focus for Shorewood in ’15

“Even though it’s not in a dire situation right now, we can see in this region there is going to be some pretty major changes,” Mayor Richard Chapman said.

The new year also will bring an increased focus on developing the Route 52 corridor and expanding recreational programs.

Several developments and improvements marked 2014 for the village. A renovated West Shore Park was the fruit of the village’s labor after years of waiting to buy out property in the floodplain around the DuPage River.

“We’re slowly accumulating properties in that area,” Chapman said. “It will give us leverage in the future.”

Stage, screen actor Edward Herrmann dies at age 71

By LYNN ELBER The Associated Press Edward Herrmann, the towering, melodious-voiced actor who brought Franklin D. Roosevelt to life in films and documentaries, won a Tony Award and charmed audiences as the stuffy dad on TV’s “Gilmore Girls,” died Wednesday. He was 71.

Herrmann died at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital of brain cancer, his son, Rory Herrmann said. Edward The actor, who Herrmann had been hospitalized for several weeks, was surrounded by family members including his wife, Star, and his three children, his son said.

“He was full of knowledge and kindness and goodness. ... He always wanted to share the great and beautiful things in life,” said Rory Herrmann.

That included art, music and classic cars.

The 6-foot-5 actor’s favorite role was playing President Roosevelt, his son said, which he did in projects including the TV movies “Eleanor and Franklin” (1976) and its sequel “Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years” (1977) and in the 1982 movie musical “Annie.” Herrmann also provided the voice for FDR in Ken Burns’ documentary series “The Roosevelts: An Intimate History.”

He served as Assistant Chief of Communications in Africa and Europe in the Army Air Corps in WWII. He owned the Boston Electric Shoe Repair and Travel Shop, George’s Drive-In, developed and operated The Cuckoo Clock Drive-In, The Iron Kettle Restaurant and George’s Pub. He managed restaurants for Faber Corporation in Chicago and was an area supervisor for Dairy Queen and Frosty Tips. In more recent years he clerked at Glenwood Marathon.

George Pappas was an energetic, positive, kind, loving and hard working man who in business and at home thrived on seeking creative solutions.

He loved golf, swimming, fishing and hunting. He had a close circle of family and friends, and was always concerned for and working to further the welfare of others.

Quinn pardons 1800s abolitionists on New Year’s clemency list

CHICAGO – Three Illinois abolitionists who were convicted for anti-slavery efforts in the 1800s were posthumously pardoned Wednesday by Gov. Pat Quinn, their names among 102 people granted New Year’s Eve clemency by the outgoing Chicago Democrat.

Efforts to pardon the three were spearheaded by Quincy historians and Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon, who filed petitions on their behalf last year as part of a special project. Among them was an Underground Railroad conductor – Dr. Richard Eells – whose Quincy home was declared by the U.S. National Park Service as one of the nation’s most important sites on the covert network that led escaped slaves to freedom and safety.

Simon also sought clemency for two abolitionists from Jacksonville, Julius Willard and his son, Samuel. They were convicted in 1843 of secreting and harboring a fugitive slave, among the same charges against Eells.

For Obama library, a contest of haves versus have-nots

HONOLULU – President Barack Obama has preached economic opportunity and equal access to education as cornerstones of the legacy he wants to leave behind. But in the contest to host his presidential library, two public universities that serve needy communities fear the playing field has been tilted against them by a pair of elite, private schools with seemingly endless money.

University of Illinois at Chicago are struggling to offer the upfront resources needed to offset the massive cost of building the library and presidential museum, expected to run close to half a billion dollars. The other two schools in the running, Columbia University and the University of Chicago, are both top-10 schools with a combined endowment of more than $15 billion.

The Obamas are expected to raise much – but not all – of the money themselves, so a university’s ability to contribute will be a major factor.

Illinois lawmakers work on bill for special 2016 election

SPRINGFIELD – A spokeswoman for Illinois’ Senate president said legislation is being prepared to establish a 2016 special election to replace late state Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka.

Democratic Senate President John Cullerton’s spokeswoman Rikeesha Phelon said he and Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan’s office have had “very productive conversations in drafting this bill.”

Phelon said the legislation could be considered during a legislative special session Jan. 8.

The session comes before Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner becomes Illinois’ first Republican governor in more than a decade and would have the power to name a four-year replacement.

Topinka, a Republican, won a second term in November but died Dec. 10.

Invasive beetle found in rhubarb at Chicago port

CHICAGO – Agriculture specialists at the Port of Chicago intercepted an invasive beetle while inspecting a shipment of

rhubarb stems from the Netherlands, federal officials said.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed Tuesday that U.S. Customs and Border Protection workers found the Redtenbacher beetle Dec. 16 in a shipment of 10 boxes of rhubarb stems.

Chicago Port Director Matthew Davies said it was a “discovery and identification of a new potential threat to the U.S. agriculture industry.” Federal officials call it a “first-in-nation” discovery.

Beetles may threaten agriculture because they damage crops and native plants when they feed on them, which lowers yields and quality.

Officials issue warning after Rend Lake drownings

NEW BADEN – Family and friends are mourning the loss

of a grandfather and grandson who died in a southern Illinois fishing accident this week.

Terry Calvert of New Baden died trying to save his 13-yearold grandson after he fell into Rend Lake on Monday afternoon. An 11-year-old grandson stayed in the boat and received help from nearby fishermen.

Calvert died at a hospital after being retrieved from the 39-degree water. Divers found his grandson, Cade Calvert, of Collinsville, at the bottom of the lake. Authorities believe Terry Calvert died from a combination of hypothermia and probable drowning and Cade Calvert died from drowning.

An Army Corps of Engineers official said the two did not have or weren’t wearing personal flotation devices.

Eight people have died in the lake near Benton since 2001.

Veronica J. Rutledge, 29, was shopping Tuesday morning with her son and three nieces in Hayden, Idaho, when the small-caliber handgun discharged one time, killing her.

Terry Rutledge, Veronica’s father-in-law, told The Spokesman-Review that the boy unzipped the special gun compartment in the woman’s purse where the weapon was kept while she was looking at clothing.

Terry Rutledge said his daughter-in-law did not put the weapon “loosely into her purse.”

The woman had a concealed weapons permit.

2015 begins: Party tragedy in Shanghai, fireworks elsewhere The ASSOCIATED PRESS Revelers converged on the beaches of Brazil, the skyscrapers of Dubai and New York’s Times Square to say good riddance to a turbulent 2014 marred by terror woes, Ebola outbreaks and a horrific series of airline disasters.

But tragedy struck in Shanghai, Baghdad was on edge and protesters in the United States planned a sobering reminder of one of the year’s biggest stories.

STAMPEDE IN SHANGHAI

Thirty-five people died in a stampede during New Year’s celebrations in downtown Shanghai, city officials said.

The deaths – the worst disaster to hit one of China’s showcase cities in years – happened at Shanghai’s popular Bund riverfront area, which can be jammed with spectators for major events. A government statement said another 43 people were injured amid the chaos about a half-hour before midnight.

Last week, the English-language Shanghai Daily reported that the annual New Year’s Eve countdown on the Bund that normally attracts about 300,000 people had been canceled, apparently because of crowd control issues. The report said a “toned-down” version of the event would be held instead but that it would not be open to the public.

Christmas also is a call to action for Christians It’s not cheery, but among the most jarring things I read in the run-up to Christmas comes from historian Stanley Weintraub, who has written about Christmas during wartime more than once.

His recounting of the Christmas Truce of 1914 is a testament to the goodness in the heart of man, even when seeped in a culture of evil. Weintraub’s latest is “A Christmas Far from Home: An Epic Tale of Courage and Survival during the Korean War.” Gen. Douglas MacArthur had told troops they would be home for Christmas. That wouldn’t happen. And in the book, about a war he himself served in, Weintraub writes about American soldiers who spent their holiday in a prisoner of war camp.

On Christmas Eve, the soldiers’ captors decorated the camp as an indoctrination technique. Brainwashing was well underway by the time they were greeted with a “Merry Christmas” sign and a placard underneath that read, “If it were not for the Wall Street Imperialists you would be home with your families on this Christmas night.” Soldiers were forced to denigrate their home country and swear allegiance to their captors.

What would I do in that situation?

It’s a question most Americans who haven’t served in the military ask themselves. The size and scope of the drama differs dramatically – but on a daily basis, what do we believe, and would we stick to our beliefs under pressure?

Stories coming out of Iraq and Syria of Christians who will not stand down, who will not renounce their faith in the face of death, remind us that martyrdom is not the stuff of history. An elderly woman with breast cancer named Ghazala comes to mind. Earlier this year, she and a group of fellow sick and disabled Iraqi Christians defied their tormenters and told them they’d rather die than surrender their faith.

And while most choices we are faced with in our lives are not lifeand-death, so many of them are about integrity and whether we really are who we claim to be. You can’t celebrate Christmas authentically

Moore works for TV producer Mark Burnett, the creator of “Survivor,” among other things. Burnett and his wife, Roma Downey, wellknown for her role in “Touched by an Angel,” launched an effort to raise $25 million to help some of the estimated 10,000 Iraqi Christians who fled their homes and remain displaced.

They join the Knights of Columbus, Aid to the Church in Need, Samaritan’s Purse and other groups that are working to help.

Stanley Weintraub wrote a previous book about what George Washington thought was his farewell to public life, when he retired as commander of the Revolutionary Army in 1783. In his address at the time, Washington impressed upon his victorious countrymen that their work needed to continue in lives of virtue and civil service to a new republic. We need that same spirit of service today. And it’s what the Christ child celebrated at Christmas calls his people to.

Looking forward to a wonderful new year There’s something about seeing Jan. 1 on the calendar.

It’s a new year, a chance for a fresh start. And there’s a sense of hope that the next 360-plus days will be filled with promise of only good things to come.

It’s natural, then, to have resolutions for the new year. Personal goals often revolve around getting physically fit, managing debt or going back to school.

With that in mind, here are some suggested larger, community-wide resolutions we have for 2015.

We hope people will make time in the coming year to volunteer.

There are many local nonprofits and organizations that could use assistance and could not survive without volunteer help. It doesn’t take much time to make a difference.

We hope people pay attention to their health. From eating better to exercising regularly, everyone benefits from staying healthy. This wish extends to healthy habits such as driving safe – put down your phones when you get behind the wheel.

We’ve seen enough crashes this past year to last us a while.

With local offices on the April

ballot, we hope our readers educate themselves about who is running and what they stand for. We hope candidates make themselves available to talk about what they want to accomplish if elected. And we hope all registered voters head to the ballot box in April.

With a new governor coming into office, we hope state lawmakers use the opportunity to make changes that actually will lift the state out of its dire financial mess. It won’t be easy, but the changes needed to fix the state’s fiscal quagmire are going to require some pain.

And most of all, we hope everyone – whether it be parents and children, spouses or citizens and those they elect to office – makes a commitment to listen to each other. All that seems to go on anymore, both in politics and regular social circles, is people yelling at one another, convinced they’re right and anyone who doesn’t see things the exact same way is wrong.

Life shouldn’t be about winning or being right, but about understanding and living with one another.

Happy new year, and best wishes for a wonderful 2015.

One school that claimed two major state championships and had another of its teams reach the state finals in one unforgettable spring season.

Without the area’s success on the gridiron, the state baseball championships won in June at Joliet’s Silver Cross Field by Providence in Class 4A and Lemont in Class 3A would have been the story of the year.

Joliet Catholic graduate Allie Quigley has been a successful professional basketball player for years. But in 2014, she proved she indeed is one of the best in the world.

After a huge season in Europe – she was the MVP of the Polish All-Star Game and winner of the halftime 3-point shooting contest – she returned home for her second season with the Chicago Sky. Injuries and other issues weakened the Sky’s roster, and Quigley seized her opportunity.

Her minutes doubled from the previous season and she was named the WNBA’s Sixth Woman of the Year as she helped the Sky reach the WNBA Finals. In nine playoff games, she averaged 14.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 25.7 minutes while shooting .412 from the field, .342 from 3-point range and .897 from the free throw line.

Hilltoppers, Lemont and Lincoln-Way West, ranked as three of the top five Class 3A teams in the state. Many observers felt all along that the winner would go on and capture the state title.

Lemont did the honors, winning the championship game over Sacred Heart-Griffin, 2-1, on Ryan Folliard’s two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Indians’ all-state battery of pitcher Jake Latz and catcher Mike Papierski is now playing at LSU. Providence’s march to the Class 4A championship was not expected and became a miraculous story. The Celtics lost 14 regular-season games

and could have been ousted in any number of playoff games.

However, Dylan Rosa refused to let it happen. The Celtics’ Mr. Clutch delivered one huge hit after another, including the go-head home run in the sixth inning against St. Rita in a championship game the Celtics would go on to win, 4-1, behind the pitching of Jake Godfrey, who also is at LSU. JCA, meanwhile, erased some of the sting from the spring regional as the Hilltoppers won the Phil Lawler Classic summer state tournament behind multi-talented Nick Dalesandro. The Hilltoppers beat Nazareth 3-1 in the title game with Dalesandro on the mound.

VIKINGS HIRE ZIMMER

Lockport graduate Mike Zimmer, son of former Porters’ coach Bill Zimmer, long has been known as one of the best defensive coaches in the NFL. As such, his name was brought up often as a potential head coach, but for whatever reason, he was bypassed.

Until mid-January, that is.

That’s when the Minnesota Vikings named Zimmer as their man in charge, the first NFL head coach with Joliet-area ties. The Vikings were going nowhere fast when he arrived, so for his first team to finish 7-9 and two games north of the Bears in the NFC North is significant.

A SPRING TO REMEMBER

Lincoln-Way East nearly pulled off the rarest of feats. The Griffins’ incredible spring began when they handily won the Class 3A Girls State Track and Field Meet, scoring 72 points to 39 for runner-up West Aurora.

Next, the boys volleyball team claimed the state championship with a 22-25, 26-24, 2519 victory over Warren. Then the softball team reached the Class 4A state finals in an attempt to complete the trifecta but settled for a fourth-place finish.

The Joliet area came up huge on Thanksgiving weekend at the University of Illinois in Champaign.

Wilmington, which has had so many strong teams under coach Jeff Reents, claimed its first state title, beating Williamsville, 17-14, on Jordan Sarr’s 31-yard field goal on the final play of the Class 3A final.

The following day, Lemont took its shot at a Class 6A championship as coach Bret Kooi, who led Lockport to back-to-back Class 8A titles in 2002 and 2003, guided the Indians to title game in his first season at the school. Lemont fell to Nazareth, 26-7; but after the Indians finished 3-6 in 2013, reaching that stage was a huge accomplishment.

Then there was the Class 7A final between Providence and Cary-Grove, two teams which many considered as good as any regardless of class. It did not disappoint as Providence, behind quarterback Justin Hunniford – the Herald-News Player of the Year – prevailed, 31-28. It was the Celtics’ 10th state championship, their first in 10 years and the first for Mark Coglianese as head coach.

ANGELS’ DOUBLE SECONDS

The Joliet Catholic girls basketball team made school history when it reached the Class 3A girls state championship game. The Angels fell to Montini, 57-44, in the final, but it was a remarkable season led by the all-staters, senior forward Jasmine Lumpkin and sophomore guard Nicole Ekhomu.

Then in the fall, the JCA girls volleyball team endured an up-and-down regular season, albeit against a strong schedule. When the Class 3A playoffs arrived, the Angels clicked. They rolled to the championship game, where they fell to powerful Wheaton St. Francis – 25-18, 25-23 – to complete a 25-17 season.

LOSS OF A LEGEND

WJOL Radio legend Don Ladas, “The Voice of Joliet,” died Jan. 19.

He was a prominent figure in the local sports community for well over 50 years and a member of the inaugural Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame class. He not only had the long-running “Tenpin Topics” bowling show and broadcast thousands of football, basketball and baseball games on WJOL, but he also promoted bowling and boxing events and worked tirelessly for local charities.

The highlight of the Class 3A state wrestling finals came at 113 pounds, where Lockport’s Brian Rossi beat Plainfield South’s Miguel Silva for the championship. Other state champions from the area were Morris’ Kenny Baldridge in Class 2A at 132 pounds and Coal City’s Cody Minnick in Class 1A at 113 pounds.

• Roark’s rise – Wilmington graduate Tanner Roark had to earn a spot in the Washington Nationals’ starting rotation in major league baseball spring training. Once he got there, he was golden. He finished 15-10 with a 2.85 ERA in 1982⁄3 innings He also pitched in relief in two playoff games.

• Folty’s debut – Minooka graduate Mike Foltynewicz, a former first-round draft pick of the Houston Astros, made his major league baseball debut with the Astros. In 16 relief appearances, he worked 182⁄3 innings.

• Conference shakeup – The Southwest Prairie Conference Board of Control voted to admit Joliet Central and Joliet West, thus forming a 10-team league beginning in the 2016-17 school year.

• Hall of Fame class – The Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame committee named a class for the first time since 2010, and what a class it was. The five inducted were Brent Wadsworth, Terry Gannon, Matt Senffner, Ed Brady and the late Ken Parker.

• Little sluggers – The St. Paul Grade School baseball team won its second straight IESA state championship.

• Chase begins – Chicagoland Speedway again hosted the first race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, and Brad Keselowski won the event to climax a huge September weekend at the speedway.

• Going-away present – The Lockport girls cross country team finished fifth in the state in coach Evon Schlotter’s final season. She has spent 34 years at Lockport, including the last 29 as the girls cross country head coach.

• State golf – Lincoln-Way West’s Alex Biedrzycki finished third and Lincoln-Way East’s Kelly Sterling tied for sixth in the Class AA girls tournament.

On the boys’ side, Providence’s Ricky Costello tied for sixth to lead the Celtics to a fourth-place finish in Class 3A. • Army strong – Joliet Central graduate Jeff Monken turned Army into a more competitive football team in his first season with Black Knights, finishing 4-8.

• Still rolling – Lemont graduate Joey Petzoldt was in the regular lineup at Lindenwood, helping his team win the men’s national collegiate bowling championship.

• National champion – Plainfield Central graduate Ryan Prater won the NCAA Division III national wrestling championship at 149 pounds.

• Oh, so close – Lewis’ Armandi Levanti finished second in the USTA/ ITA National Small College men’s tennis singles championships. The title match was his only loss of the season.

SUBMITTED REPORTS MARSEILLES – It was everything a championship game should be and then some.

Reed-Custer entered the Marseilles Holiday Tournament hoping to become the first No. 1 seed ever to win the tournament. For most of Tuesday night’s tournament final, it appeared that would not happen. Dwight (11-2) jumped to a 30-12 lead after one quarter and was up, 46-27, at halftime.

Reed-Custer needed something big, and junior guard Travis Schoonover delivered.

The all-tournament selection scored 44 of his tournamentand school-record 47 points after halftime as the Comets tied it at 83 to force an overtime, where they outscored the Trojans 18-13 for a 101-96 victory.

“The kids were absolutely phenomenal,” Reed-Custer coach Mark Porter said. “We never gave up, even when we were down 20 plus and 19 at the half. We never stopped pushing the pace, and it paid off in the end.”

Schoonover made 12 of 24 shots, including 4 of 14 from 3-point range, and 14 of 19 free throws. He also led ReedCuster with seven rebounds.

Comets forward Austin Headrick, the tournament MVP, chipped in with 21 points. Mason Dransfeldt contributed 10, Tommy Shaw nine and Austin Hauck eight.

Center Drew Travers hit 10 of 11 shots and scored 23 points to lead Dwight. Justin Fox chipped in 20, and Collin Irvin and Caleb Boman had 10. Irvin also grabbed 10 rebounds, and Travers and Fox had seven

apiece as Dwight owned a 48-35 advantage on the boards.

The Trojans also shot a sizzling 57.4 percent from the field. But Reed-Custer caught up using the long ball. The Comets took 55 shots from 3-point range and made 18, with Headrick hitting 7 of 11 for all of his 21 points.

“Brent [Headrick] ruled the first half and Travis [Schoonover] ruled the second half scoring-wise,” Porter said.

“Our kids did a great job of playing unselfishly, getting the ball to the guys that were hot and doing the little things that helped us become tournament champs.”

After the Huskies took the lead, 53-52, sophomore Teyvion Kirk hit a basket with 23 seconds left. Kirk added a free throw with 7.6 seconds to seal the win.

Kirk scored 14 points and Bell 12.

TCU takes Peach Bowl

ATLANTA – Determined to show it should have been included in the four-team playoff, No. 6 TCU rode three touchdown passes from Trevone Boykin and a dominant defense to a 42-3 victory Wednesday over No. 9 Mississippi in the Peach Bowl.

Josh Doctson had two touchdown catches and Aaron Green ran for a score and added a touchdown reception for the Horned Frogs (12-1).

Ole Miss (9-4) lost four of its past six games.

TCU was ranked No. 3 by the selection committee before crushing Iowa State, 55-3, to end the season as Big 12 co-champions. But they were devastated to fall to No. 6 in the final ranking .

Boise wins Fiesta Bowl

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Jay Ajayi ran for 134 yards and three touchdowns and Boise State made a late defensive stand to hold off Arizona in the Fiesta Bowl.

Boise State (12-2) raced to a 21-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes behind a string of big plays before allowing Arizona to claw its way back.

The Wildcats (10-4) quickly marched down the field in the closing seconds, but Anu Solomon was sacked at the 10 on the final play.

DePaul tops Marquette ROSEMONT – Billy Garrett Jr. and Jamee Crockett rallied DePaul from a 13-point deficit to beat Marquette, 61-58, in the Big East opener Wednesday for both teams.

Garrett scored eight of his 19 points in the last 3:31.

His 3-pointer tied the game at 55 at 1:56 and his free throw 42 seconds later gave DePaul (7-7) the lead for good. Crockett extended the Blue Demons to 58-55 with 44 seconds to play.

Marquette (8-5) twice closed within two and DePaul made 3 of 4 free throws to lead 61-58.

Ernie Accorsi will help Bears – if they let him BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush We had spoken a few times on the telephone, but I first met Ernie Accorsi in person in a cemetery somewhere in Saddlebrook, New Jersey.

It was New Year’s Eve, 2002, two days after the death of Joel Buchsbaum on the morning of the final Sunday of the NFL regular season.

Joel is a legend in the industry, the greatest independent talent evaluator ever, and was a trusted resource to scores of NFL executives until his untimely passing.

Joel did all of his work over 24 years at Pro Football Weekly. He was an only child, a true eccentric and a bit of a recluse who left behind only his mother, Fran.

In addition to a valued co-worker, Joel was like a brother to me. So I flew to the Buchsbaum home in Brooklyn and rode with Fran in the limo to the cemetery that New Year’s Eve day.

I always knew Joel was well-connected, but I had no idea how well-connected until I got out of that limo.

We were somewhere off the beaten path in Jersey, and the ride had taken forever.

It was a graveside funeral, and there were maybe a dozen to 15 or 16 friends and rela-

tives there. As I walked with Fran to the grave, I noticed four men standing together about 30 feet or so back from the gravesite and the rest of the mourners.

As I focused on them, I realized it was Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli from the New England Patriots, Joel Bussert, director of player personnel for the NFL, and Accorsi.

Until that moment, they all had been voices on the phone, so I made my way over to introduce myself and thank them for being there for Fran.

About Accorsi and the Bears: The Giants were a playoff team that year, Accorsi their GM, and the following weekend they’d lose a legendary wild-card game, 39-38, to the 49ers in Candlestick Park. But there was Accorsi at a Jewish cemetery out in the middle of nowhere to pay his respects to a man no one realized he knew.

We never became close, but we did stay in touch for several years after that discussing appropriate memorials for Joel, and talking a little football mainly because Accorsi wanted to do what he could for Pro Football Weekly because it had meant so much to Joel.

Accorsi served two year as general manager of the Baltimore Colts (1982 to 1983), eight years as executive vice president and GM of the Cleveland Browns (1985 to 1992) and 10

years as GM of the Giants (1998 to 2007).

He led the Browns to five playoff appearances and three AFC title games. And in 1991, Accorsi hired Belichick, then the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants, as his next head coach.

With the Giants, Accorsi led the team to four playoffs and one Super Bowl that they lost to the Ravens. They hired Tom Coughlin, and the team he built won the Super Bowl the year after he retired.

Not only is he uniquely qualified to find an excellent GM and head coach for the Bears, he is a special individual who treats everyone with respect and is as loyal and honorable as anyone you ever will meet.

All of his GM jobs were with family ownership groups – the Irsays, Modells and Maras – so he is perfectly suited to understand the McCaskey family dynamic and work with it effectively.

The only way this relationship is likely to fail is if George McCaskey allows Ted Phillips to make the final recommendations and decisions, or insists on doing it himself.

The Bears will succeed with these hires if Accorsi is allowed to make it happen.

Reports: 3 assistants eyed for coach vacancy

By JEFF ARNOLD jarnold@shawmedia.com Two days after the Bears announced the firings of coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery, the names of possible replacements for Trestman began to emerge.

On Wednesday, the NFL Network reported the Bears will interview Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn on Friday. Quinn, who has run the Seattle defense for the past two seasons after Gus Bradley left to accept the head coaching job in Jacksonville, reportedly also is set to meet with the 49ers, Jets and Falcons, according to media reports.

On Tuesday, the Bears asked permission to interview Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase and Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles for the coaching vacancy, according to multiple reports.

Like Quinn, both assistants are widely expected to be popular choices among teams searching for new coaches. According to reports, the 49ers and Falcons both have requested to speak with Gase, who has been with the Broncos for the past six seasons.

Gase has been the offensive coordinator in Denver for the past two years after working as the Broncos’ quarterbacks coach for two

seasons (2011-12) and as receivers coach the two previous seasons before that.

Because the Broncos have a first-round bye in the playoffs, Gase would be available for interviews Friday and Saturday of this week, according to NFL rules applying to the availability of assistant coaches under contract.

Bowles, on the other hand, could not interview until next week with the Cardinals playing in this weekend’s NFC wild-card game against Carolina. On Tuesday, the Arizona Republic reported that every team currently in need of a coach – including the Bears, 49ers, Falcons, Jets and Raiders – have contacted the Cardinals seeking to interview Bowles.

Bowles has worked as the Cardinals’ defensive coordinator for the past two seasons. Before his stint in the desert, Bowles served as secondary coach/interim defensive coordinator with the Eagles in 2012. He was as an assistant head coach/secondary coach with the Dolphins from 2008 to 2011, becoming interim head coach after the firing of Tony Sparano during his last year in Miami.

Quinn previously worked as Seattle’s defensive line coach in 2009-10 before working as the defensive coordinator at the University of Florida for two years.

Joliet-based Christian rock band recording old hymns with a new sound Know more

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – The Joliet-based Christian rock band Daniel’s Window is celebrating God, life and music this year with free song downloads – one a month – until it releases the whole compilation in September 2015.

Although the Joliet-based band has released five albums in rock, hip-hop and electronic styles since forming in 1997, its newest songs are hymns infused with its own special personality. It’s the first time in the band’s 17-year history it has focused on hymns, said lead singer Heather King of Joliet.

The first free download was “Nearer my God to Thee,” which dropped in September.

In addition to the free releases, the fall CD will include a couple bonus songs “These are hymns I grew up with,” King said. “They’re very old-school with a rich tradition. These are the ones that are closest to my heart.”

King said much of her generation grew up with hymns, but younger listeners may be unfamiliar with them.

“Hymns never go out of date,” she said, “and we thought it was time to introduce the next generation to them.”

The new focus surely will be welcomed by fans who have not heard new releases from the band in several years.

Heather and her husband, fellow band member and rhythm guitar player Caleb King, lost their newborn conjoined twins in 2012.

“It was a life-shaking thing for our family,” Heather King said. “They lived for 52 minutes, then both girls passed away. Our family’s life was rocked. We needed to slow down and recover from that.”

“We’d been going full steam since 1997.”

Daniel’s Window is named after the passages in the Bible’s Book of Daniel, where the king of Babylon signed an edict that those who worship must do so only to the king.

Daniel defied the ruling and continued to worship his God through his window,

which faced Jerusalem. He was thrown into the lion’s den for his infraction of the law, but survived.

Odum said Daniel’s Window is a ministry that reflects its members’ own faith. It’s not about money, he said. During its early years, the band was on the road full time. It was a lot of pressure, he said.

“I don’t think we would have given away any music for free back then,” Odum said. “We don’t need the mon-

ey for our livelihoods now. We want it to be our ministry.”

Besides, it’s not easy for bands to make money in today’s music climate, Odum said. The new horizon for music artists is Spotify, Odum said, where listeners can access music worldwide.

“You still get paid, but it’s a fraction of a fraction of a penny,” Odum said. “For an independent artist, that might be enough to go grab a sandwich at McDonald’s or something.”

From the beginning, Odum said, the band’s focus was its ministry, letting people know about Christ. Recording timeless hymns is part of that focus.

“What I love about the hymns are the lyrics,” Odum said. “There’s some real depth in them. I think those songs can be sung for eternity.”

At the band’s inception, members were all in their early 20s and their focus was

on reaching youth. Almost 20 years later, Caleb King said Daniel’s Window is less about getting kids pumped up and more about being guides for their journeys, just as Daniel’s Window has been a life-changing journey for him.

“We had thought maybe we’d last 10 years and then burn out or play in other bands,” he said. Today, he sees ministry through Daniel’s Window as an adventure.

“We can’t do something this long and have it not change us. You have to let those experiences take root and have meaning.”

Today, its members are all involved in the music industry in other ways, in addition to playing with Daniel’s Window. Odum said he teaches digital audio recording arts classes at the University of Saint Francis in Joliet and records his and other acts at his Seneca studio.

He’s made more than 100 CDs, for jazz, country and rock bands.

Heather King teaches voice, piano and guitar. Her husband is a visual artist.

Bill Coleman, bass guitarist, is an audiovisual expert for a Chicago production company. Drummer Clayton Melocik is a sound expert with a production company out of Arizona. Melocik flies home to record with the band and to concert venues.

With the latest hymn project, Odum said the band plans to release one free track a month. Thankfully, Odum already had some pieces recorded at the studio that were not previously released as official Daniel’s Window songs.

“It takes some work to do a song a month,” Odum said.

by Bishop R. Daniel Conlon, has released a Framework for Pastoral Action that focuses on the initiatives of discipleship, evangelization and charity.

Its overall theme is “Go Out and Make Disciples,” and it urges all Catholics to reach outside their church doors as part of their ministry efforts.

The new pastoral framework pinpoints seven areas of focus for all within the diocese: Pillar of Discipleship, Pillar of Evangelization and Pillar of Charity.

These pillars and focus areas are a culmination of a two-year effort of meetings, forums and surveys by hundreds of participants in the diocese.

As the new pastoral framework is distributed throughout the diocese, clergy and laity will assess current efforts in light of the focus areas, determine strengths and weaknesses, and then develop initiatives around them.

Each year the International Bridge Press Association gives awards for excellence in various categories. The personality of last year was Patrick Huang from Chinese Taipei.

He first represented his country internationally at the senior level at age 15, in the Far East Championships. That was a record until beaten by 14-yearold Agustin Madala, who played for Argentina in the 2001 South American Championships.

Huang also led Chinese Taipei to the final of the most prestigious event of all, the Bermuda Bowl World Team Championship, in 1969 and 1970.

Huang is one of the best and mostliked players of all time.

The diagramed deal occurred during a world individual championship, and Huang was the only player to find the right defense.

South was in four spades. West led the diamond queen. What did Huang (East) do?

At all of the nine tables, South was in spades, five times in game and four times in a partscore.

At eight tables, East took the first trick with his diamond ace and returned a diamond.

The declarers won with their king and played three rounds of clubs. In a moment, South ruffed a club in the dummy and took 10 tricks: five spades, one heart, one diamond, two clubs and that club ruff.

Huang, anticipating this, took the first trick and shifted to a trump. When declarer conceded a club trick, Huang led his second spade to kill the ruff.

South was held to nine tricks, giving Huang and his partner a cold top.

• GOUT. This form of arthritis develops after tiny crystals of uric acid accumulate in joints, causing the joints to become swollen, red and very painful. It really hurts: I speak from experience as a doctor and a patient. Gout may be diagnosed by examining fluid from the joint under a microscope to see whether uric acid crystals are present. Blood tests may also be needed.

• PSEUDOGOUT is similar to gout, but results from deposits of certain kinds of crystals (made of calcium pyrophosphate) in joints.

Long-standing pseudogout can resemble RA. Joint fluid may be examined under a microscope to verify the presence of calcium crystals. Blood tests may also be needed.

• OSTEOARTHRITIS. The joint pain of osteoarthritis can be similar to that caused by RA. However, there are significant differences between other symptoms and the causes of the two conditions.

In my experience, a diagnosis of RA is usually pretty straightforward.

But before leaping to that diagnosis, a doctor should do the testing required to look for other causes of your joint symptoms – just as your doctor is doing.

Dear Doctor K: My doctor suspects I have rheumatoid arthritis, but she wants to test me for several other disorders, including lupus and gout.

Why? Dear Reader: Several other diseases can cause symptoms and joint changes that are similar to rheumatoid arthritis (RA), including lupus and gout. That’s probably why your doctor is ordering the tests. She suspects you have RA, but she won’t know for sure unless she rules out these other diseases.

RA is an autoimmune disease. The body’s immune system attacks healthy tissue, primarily the tissue lining the joints. This causes swelling, pain, redness and stiffness in the joints. RA can affect other tissues throughout the body as well.

Accurately diagnosing RA, especially in the early stages, can be difficult.

A physical exam, your symptoms, blood tests and imaging tests can all help. But before finalizing the diagnosis, your doctor may want to rule out other possibilities, including: • LUPUS is an inflammatory autoimmune disease. Fever and joint pain are common early symptoms of lupus, just as they are for RA. The joints involved in lupus often are the same ones affected in RA. Lupus is diagnosed based on symptoms and laboratory tests.

• SCLERODERMA is an autoimmune disease that causes skin to thicken, tighten and look shiny. Some people have rheumatoid-like arthritis; others have a combination of arthritis and tightening of the tendons.

People with scleroderma have certain antibodies in the blood that can be detected with a blood test.

• SJOGREN’S SYNDROME is also an autoimmune disease. Immune

Dear Readers: Welcome to 2015! If the last year was challenging for some of us, a new one has arrived, bringing with it our chance for a new beginning.

Today is the day we have an opportunity to discard destructive old habits for healthy new ones, and with that in mind, I will share Dear Abby’s often-requested list of New Year’s Resolutions, which were adapted by my late mother, Pauline Phillips, from the original credo of Al-Anon: JUST FOR TODAY: I will live through this day only.

I will not brood about yesterday or obsess about tomorrow. I will not set far-reaching goals or try to overcome all of my problems at once.

I know that I can do something for 24 hours that would overwhelm me if I had to keep it up for a lifetime.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will be happy. I will not dwell on thoughts that depress me. If my mind fills with clouds, I will chase them away and fill it with sunshine.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will accept what is. I will face reality. I will correct those things that I can correct and accept those I cannot.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will improve my mind. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration. I will not be a mental loafer.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will make a conscious effort to be agreeable. I will be kind and courteous to those who cross my path, and I’ll not speak ill of others. I will improve my appearance, speak softly, and not interrupt when someone else is talking.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will refrain from improving anybody but myself.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will do something positive to improve my health. If I’m a smoker, I’ll quit. If I am overweight, I will eat healthfully -- if only just for today. And not only that, I will get off the couch and
