Wilmington Dam – Wilmington Long before settlers arrived in Will County, the Kankakee River had been used as a means of transportation and exploration. After settlement, the first persons to utilize the Kankakee River were those who valued it as a source of power.

These individuals built dams and mills for processing grains and cutting timber.

Many of the 19th century dams were constructed from wood and did not hold up to the occasional ice jams and floods that are common on the Kankakee River.

The improvement of the Kankakee River for navigation in some portions dates back many years. For the Illinois and Michigan Canal Commissioners, the Kankakee River region once promised great potential economic value for early investors.

In 1847, the state chartered the Kankakee and Iroquois and Manufacturing Company (later known as the Kankakee Company) for the purpose of improving the navigation of the Kankakee River and Iroquois Rivers upstream of the State Dam to the Indiana border and developing water power on the river.

In 1866, a new company, called the Kankakee Company, was organized with new investors and ideas. Additional locks and dams from Wilmington to the Indiana state line were planned but lacked the capital to begin construction.

Four years later, the Kankakee Company was reorganized with a new board of directors, new money from Eastern investors, and different engineers. In short order, the company rebuilt the State and feeder dams, repaired the feeder lock, and constructed a series of dams (known as #2, #3, #4) and locks (known as #3 and #4) around Alden’s Island in Wilmington.

The improvements provided an outlet for the Kankakee Valley by water to Chicago and St. Louis. The locks and dams help create enough slack water in the river basin to make the Kankakee River navigable for miles above Wilmington. In time, boats regularly traveled to Chicago

“It was another continuation hearing,” she said last week, referring to the April 18 court date for her son’s case.

“They’re still trying to get more information.”

Nicholas DePratt, 29, of New Lenox, was charged March 12, 2013, with drug-induced homicide in connection to Brandon’s Nov. 25, 2012, death.

Since that time, Carol said she’s missed two, maybe three, of the 57 courtroom appearances listed in court records as she waits for a resolution to the case. “[I go] because Brandon matters to me. And I want Nick DePratt to know that he does, that it wasn’t nothing … and he will see me there every time,” Carol said.

Police have said DePratt was the one who supplied Brandon, who was 27, with heroin the night before he died. The two met when Brandon was out on a pass from the Will County drug court program’s Miller Taylor House, a home for recovering addicts.

After a night out partying with friends, police say DePratt dumped Brandon’s body near his parents’ home in the 700 block of Stonegate Road in New Lenox. The official cause of death was cold exposure, coupled with heroin and cocaine intoxication, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

“The next thing I know for certain is the next morning, I went out to collect my garbage cans and my son was in my front yard,” Bill Robinson said as he choked up. “I’m convinced I could have saved my son’s life. But the fact of the matter is the person that provided him with the drugs also didn’t care enough to even call or drop him off somewhere, or throw a brick through my window.”

Joliet school event promotes autism awareness

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The grounds of Gompers Junior High School were the scene Saturday morning of running and walking to support autism awareness and education.

Dozens of parents, students and staff gathered at the school in Joliet to run a 5K race or walk one mile for the first-ever Gompers Speaks for Autism. Proceeds from the event will be used toward the Gompers Adaptive Skills, Behavior and Communication room.

About $1,200 in proceeds were raised not only for Saturday’s event but for what social worker Amanda Leon said were other fundraising events held at the school.

Participants were dressed for running Saturday and wearing T-shirts that said, “Gompers Speaks for Autism.” Kasandra Heard and her son, Cedric McClain, a Gompers eighth-grader, were among the participants.

“I think it’s great. It’s very exciting,” Heard said.

She said her son was diagnosed with autism when he was 3. He loves

Autism spectrum disorder and autism are terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development characterized in varying degrees by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors, according to Autism Speaks, a nonprofit advocacy organization.

Gompers Principal Connie Russell said Saturday’s event was a great opportunity for families to be more involved with the school and autism awareness.

She said social worker Leon came up with the idea for the event, and she hopes it will be held annually.

Joliet backs off pitch to Rialto for third-party management

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – City officials said they will not push a proposal to bring in a third party to manage entertainment at the Rialto Square Theatre.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk at City Council meetings last week the city had contacted such an operator and wanted to make a presentation to the Rialto Square Theatre board, which meets Wednesday.

But after meeting with Rialto board Chairman Dan Vera, O’Dekirk said Friday that he will not press the issue.

“I’m not disappointed,” O’Dekirk said. “I’d like to see the Rialto problems get straightened out. I know Dan does, too. It was a productive meeting.

We just all have to work together.”

Vera did not immediately return phone Friday calls seeking comment about the matter.

The Rialto is in the process of seeking a general manager after parting ways with Randy Green in a separation agreement reached April 6.

Vera said at that meeting that the Rialto would begin seeking a new general manager immediately. The job had

not yet been posted as of late Friday afternoon on the Rialto website, which listed openings for an accountant and a part-time school matinee coordinator.

O’Dekirk said at the April 18 City Council meeting Vera was opposed to the idea of a third-party entity managing the theater. But city officials no longer are saying that.

“He’s not saying they’re not interested,” City Manager Jim Hock said.

“He’s just saying they’re pursuing a number of different options.”

Hock said the city had proposed a third-party company to handle the entertainment side of the Rialto business as a way to deal with the theater’s financial problems. The city has stepped in to guarantee that performers will be paid. But the money is coming out of a $600,000 annual Rialto stipend from the city that is expected to be nearly depleted after the city pays for the Vince Gill performance May 5.

Hock has written a letter to promoters to guarantee performers’ fees when two shows this month were in jeopardy. But the city does not plan to back any shows after May 5.

But the charge of drug-induced homicide – a Class X felony with a sentencing range of six to 30 years behind bars – remains fairly controversial.

Critics of the tough-on-crime approach – including Dr. Kathleen Burke with Strategic Prevention – argue there should be consideration whether the person who supplied the drug also is struggling with addiction.

“What some people don’t take into consideration is that the decision-making of the person breaking the law is malfunctioning,” Burke said. “The addiction takes over the brain.”

Glasgow disagrees with critics who believe the charges go too far.

“If their child was killed by someone giving them heroin, they wouldn’t think that for a minute. This is one drug that’s not recreational. It’s a poison,” Glasgow said.

Drug-induced homicide cases are time-consuming for law enforcement investigators, Glasgow said. But it’s worth it when there’s a strong case to be built. Even then, these cases take time to work through the court system to the actual trial.

“This office can’t just snap our fingers and be able to prove drug-induced homicides. It requires the law enforcement agencies to do the extra leg work,” Glasgow said. “There’s still an uphill battle. In the majority of cases, we’re never able to prove where the heroin came from directly in order to lodge the drug-induced homicide charge.”

Six drug-induced homicide cases, including DePratt’s, are pending in Will County.

“If you’re peddling heroin in Will County, you won’t do it for long. Sooner or later, you’re going to be selling to an agent, or an informant wearing a wire, and you’re going to be indicted and go to prison. And that’s a certainty. We don’t have any leniency in these cases,” Glasgow said. “It’s like selling ricin.

The county hit an all-time high of 53 heroin-related overdose deaths in 2012, but the epidemic appears to be gaining ground once again. After years of decline, the drug claimed another 53 victims – 19 of whom were 30 or younger – in 2015.

As of Friday, at least 18 people are confirmed to have died from heroin-related overdoses in 2016, with eight pending cases still under investigation,

That’s compared to the 11 who fatally overdosed by this time in 2015.

‘It was general shock’

As a kid, Brandon loved soccer. He began using drugs and alcohol as a teenager, and his addiction grew worse in his 20s as he had several run-ins with the police. He was repeatedly arrested and charged for burglaries to support his addiction. Bill said his son entered Will County’s drug court program in early 2011 with the hope of gaining the skills and coping mechanisms to stay clean. Before his death, he had earned his GED through the court program and held a full-time job in Elwood.

Bill said if his son had died years earlier – at the height of his drug addiction – he wouldn’t have been so surprised. But the day before his death, Bill and Brandon went grocery shopping and had a great time. There were no signs of a potential relapse, he said.

“It was general shock. If it had happened earlier, it wouldn’t have hurt less, but I wouldn’t have been surprised,” he said. “[I never expected] anything like this because he had been doing well.”

Carol said she’s thankful to drug court for giving her one year and nine months with her son while he was clean.

“It was great. He was so different.

His nieces and nephews really got to know him, which was great,” she said.

“I would see him almost every day.”

Bill and Carol know a win in court won’t bring their son back.

But a conviction may send a message to drug dealers to think twice.

“We need to do something to put a wall between this poison and our children,” Bill said. “If one way of doing that is to prosecute the ones that supply it, the ones that make it impossible for someone who’s trying to turn their life around to turn it around, I’m in favor of it.

“I’m in favor of anything that stops this drug.”

In 2004, Minooka native John Figarelli founded the National Fitness Hall of Fame with a mission of “preserving the past while promoting the future” of fitness.

Figarelli wanted to have a physical place to recognize, acknowledge and showcase the lifelong efforts of people in the fitness industry; people such as Charles Atlas, Jack LaLanne, Jane Fonda, Joe Weider and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The NFHOF chronicles the history of fitness through books and equipment dating back to the late 1800s, when fitness was about culture and beauty; the 1930s, when it was about being strong and taking care of the family (“he-men,” as Figarelli refers to them); and the 1980s, when leg warmers, headbands and John Travolta’s blockbuster movie, “Staying Alive,” were all the rage.

“It breaks the history of fitness into eras or decades, emphasizing a

His collection of memorabilia includes everything from a 1920s rowing machine to high-top Reebok aerobic shoes from the 1980s. Over the years, Figarelli has collected everything he could find relating to fitness, including autographs, fitness books and old fitness videos. He has a warehouse of items.

The NFHOF had its first home in Sycamore and then a spot on Wapella Street in Minooka from 2006 to 2012.

Now, the physical Hall of Fame is a national traveling exhibit with a portion of it at the American College of Sports Medicine in Indianapolis

showcasing fitness legends of yesterday.

There will also be a virtual tour on the NFHOF website, NationalFitnessHallofFame.org, later this year, where hundreds of thousands of visitors can learn about past and present fitness leaders and get inspiration from them.

On May 1, a portion of the Fitness Hall of Fame will be on display in Minooka and open to the public from 2 to 5 p.m. in the community room at the Minooka municipal building on McEvilly Road.

The “Be Active” community fitness expo will also be there with exhibitor booths, short seminars by fitness professionals, performances by local fitness and dance groups and youth sports organizations, local trainers and all kinds of health and fitness information, tips and tidbits.

The entire event is free and will include a dance contest to music from

the ’80s (bring your leg warmers and headbands if you dare).

Figarelli has a degree in exercise science from the University of Illinois at Chicago. At 15, he bought his first book about Arnold Schwarzenegger and started power lifting. That started his lifelong passion and career in exercise and fitness. He won third place in the lightweight division of the Mr. Junior Illinois bodybuilding contest.

Fitness is no longer just about bodybuilders or models, Figarelli said. It’s about fellowship with family and friends. “[Fitness] is about being active,” he said. “We try to encourage all individuals to be more active and healthy, do things with family and friends and have an active lifestyle.”

You can never be too old to take a leap of faith into the unknown

PLAINFIELD – When former Plainfield police officer Bobby Bostanche was living and working in Florida, he started taking skydiving lessons.

One day, when his mother, Phyllis Bostanche, of Plainfield, was visiting him, Bobby said, “I’m going to jump.

Mom, why don’t you go, too?”

To Bobby’s surprise, Phyllis said, “OK.” At the time, Phyllis – who was 83 when she died Jan. 9 – was 77.

“We took her to the athletic store to get the right outfit and she had her hair done because she knew it was going to be videoed,” said Bobby, of Plainfield. “I said, ‘Mom, as soon you jump out of the plane, it’s not going to matter,’ but she said, ‘I have to look good for it.’ ” Was Phyllis normally this adventurous? No, Bobby said. For a time in the late 1980s and early 1990s, she and her husband, Bob, participated in rendezvous camping at different sites around the country, bringing only items people used in the mid-1800s, Bobby said.

“They did that for about 5 or 10 years off and on,” Bobby said. “But then my dad got Parkinson’s and they had to stop.”

Phyllis’ interest in the Civil War began when she researched one of her relatives’ involvement, up to finding his tombstone at Andersonville Prison in Georgia, where he died after his capture, Bobby said.

“She was always close with all her classmates,” Bobby said. “They met at Larry’s Diner every couple of months. ...

She was so close to everyone in Plainfield. She just loved that town.”

Bobby said Phyllis was loving, outgoing and fun. He recalled a sweltering day years ago when he was directing traffic. He saw Phyllis slow down in her car and thought she was bringing him a drink of water.

To Bobby’s surprise, she gave him half a peace sign and drove away. When

She painted vases and made her own Christmas cards in a room she set up for her artwork. She stripped, sanded and refinished antique furniture. She crocheted an abundance of blankets.

She also loved animals and dogsat for Bobby when he was a K-9 officer and went on vacation. When visiting Bobby in Florida, Phyllis even went horseback riding – something she hadn’t done since her youth, Bobby said.

“I had this really old horse that was so gentle. She just loved that horse,” Bobby said.

None of these activities foretold the day Phyllis would actually jump from a plane. Before she made the leap, she received instruction at the facility. Her teacher, in his 80s, was a former World War II paratrooper, Bobby said.

“The instructor told her when the cows look like gnats, you pull the rip cord,” Bobby said. “And when the ants look like cows, it’s too late.”

He’s proud his mother made the leap, and she loved showing off the pictures that proved it. Bobby said when Phyllis was flying back to Illinois, she said to the attendant, “Can you tell me when the plane gets to 14,000 feet?”

Of course, the attendant asked why, Bobby said.

“She said, ‘I jumped out of a plane at 14,000 feet and I wanted to know what it looked like,’” Bobby said.

he later asked for an explanation, she said, “I always wanted to give a police officer the finger. I knew if I did it to you, I wouldn’t get into trouble.”

Phyllis listened to the latest music and supported Bobby when he began playing drums at age 9. She allowed him and his friends to paint the basement black and then add footprints on the wall in glow-in-the-dark paint. She didn’t mind when he played in a band as a teen.

Plainfield D-202 to hold hearing on outsourcing

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield School District 202 board has scheduled a public hearing Monday on a proposal to outsource custodial services that has drawn criticism in past months from the Plainfield Association of Support Staff.

The hearing will be at 6:30 p.m. at the district administration center, 15732 Howard St., Plainfield. The board is not expected to vote on the proposal at the meeting, District 202 Spokesman Tom Hernandez wrote in an email Friday.

The district received bids from GCA Services Group, ABM and Aramark for custodial services that could reduce costs between $908,000 to $9.9 million during the next three years, depending on the number of positions deployed, pay rates and benefits, district officials have said.

A three-year total cost analysis of six base bids presented to the public at an April 11 board meeting from the companies showed GCA Services Group mostly having the lowest cost, with the

exception of base bid No. 3 from ABM. Aramark showed to have the highest cost. PASS, the district’s support staff union, has criticized the proposal and rallied against the proposal.

“After I got over the shock, the big thing was the disappointment I felt from administration and the board; that you could not stand with us and keep us employed with [District 202] and just throw it away for a few pieces of silver,” PASS President John Piechocinski said at the April 11 meeting.

District officials have said they were exploring outsourcing custodial services to “more effectively manage its finances in light of the state’s unpredictable and inadequate” education funding.

In light of apparent distrust between the board, administration and unions, board member Rod Westfall urged at the April 11 meeting for everyone to work together. He said the district has faced financial difficulties because of the state.

“The problem is not with this group [and] not with PASS. The problem is down in Springfield,” Westfall said.

The Joliet Fire Department will be entering the first phase of its annual hydrant testing beginning May 2. cautions to reduce the impact of possible rusty water, according to the news release. The City of Joliet will provide a chemical that removes rust from clothes in a washing machine, however, be cautioned that affected clothes must not be dried until they have been properly run through a rinse cycle that includes this chemical.

The chemical will be available at any Joliet Fire Station, free of charge.

Public meeting to focus on high-speed rail fixes The HERALD–NEWS WILMINGTON – The Illinois Department of Transportation will host a public meeting May 5 on the final environmental report covering the rebuilding of the Union Pacific Railroad’s Kankakee River bridge and other improvements as part of the Chicago-to-St. Louis high-speed rail program.

The meeting will be an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. at ASIP Local 150, 19800 West South Arsenal Road in Wilmington, according to a news release from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

At the meeting, the public will have the opportunity to view exhibits, meet one-on-one with study team representatives and provide comments.

A brief presentation will take place at 5:30 p.m.

Comments received at the meeting, as well as those received within 30 days after the meeting, will be in-

cluded in the report submitted to the Federal Railroad Administration for final approval.

The final environmental report covers the construction of a second track on the Union Pacific Railroad from north of East Kankakee River Drive to south of North First Street in Wilmington, as well as the reconstruction of the Kankakee River bridge.

The proposed Wilmington upgrades are part of the overall Illinois High-Speed Rail Program to allow passenger service between Chicago and St. Louis to travel at speeds up to 110 mph.

JOLIET – Joliet Junior College had some administrative changes when Judy Mitchell was approved as interim president Tuesday.

The Board of Trustees also approved the appointment of an interim administrative affairs vice president, a dean of academic excellence and a financial aid director.

Those changes followed the appointment of Mitchell, who is leading the college while plans are put in place to search for a new president after Debra Daniels resigned. The new appointments include: • Jeff Heap as interim administrative affairs vice president after Mitchell became interim president, Kelly Rohder, college spokeswoman, stated in an email. He previously served as the controller and financial services director since 2002.

• David Naze as dean of academic excellence and support, slated to start June 4. He comes from Prairie State College, where he was the associate dean of academic affairs.

Rohder stated Naze’s position will “centralize and provide oversight” to college and career readiness, scheduling, curriculum development, and academic policy and standards.

Illinois seeks to limit use of solitary confinement

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Brian Nelson’s years in solitary confinement left him terrified of other people, and he said he still can taste the concrete dust from his cell, even though he’s been free since 2010.

The 51-year-old is afraid to ride the bus, he takes five psychotropic drugs and sees a psychiatrist every week.

Even when he’s at a park surrounded by grass, he said everything starts turning gray, and he remembers how tiny air pockets in the walls kicked up dust whenever he would clean his cell at a now-shuttered maximum security prison in Tamms, in Illinois’ southern tip. He was confined there for the final 12 years of a 26-year sentence for murder and armed robbery.

“Those four walls beat me down so bad,” he told members of an Illinois House committee during a recent emotional hearing on the state’s solitary confinement practices.

Stories such as Nelson’s have led Illinois lawmakers to push prisons to restrict the use of solitary confinement, joining a national movement that has policymakers rethinking the longstanding form of punishment that critics say has a profound psychological impact on inmates.

University adding major in brewing amid craft beer boom

CARBONDALE – An Illinois university has a new accredited degree in fermentation science to train future brewers, distillers and vintners.

The state Board of Higher Education approved Southern Illinois University’s new Bachelor of Science degree in March, The Southern Illinoisan reported.

Matt McCarroll, director of the Fermentation Science Institute at the university, said rapid growth in craft brewing has led to demand for trained

more than five consecutive days and five total days during a 150-day period.

That would be a dramatic change from the current rules, which allow prisons to isolate inmates for weeks or years at a time.

The bill, which received the House committee’s initial approval on Wednesday, also would require prisons to allow inmates in solitary to spend four hours a day outside of their cells. The measure awaits a vote by the full chamber.

“If a bill like this passed, it would be a real milestone in solitary reform,” said Jean Casella, the co-director of Solitary Watch, a Washington, D.C.based group that monitors the use of solitary confinement nationally.

State corrections officials oppose the measure, telling lawmakers it would go too far and that they want the chance to change things on their own.

“There are aspects, quite a few aspects of the bill, that seriously diminish the department’s ability to separate the most violent offenders from the general population,” said Mike Atchison, the chief of operations at the Illinois Department of Corrections. He said the department is finalizing new rules to reduce the use of solitary confinement.

Ford expressed little faith in the department’s pledge to make changes.

“I’m committed to getting it right, but I’m not committed to waiting for you to do it right,” he said at the hearing.

Suburban Chicago pastor charged with sex abuse of child

ST. CHARLES – Prosecutors said a suburban Chicago pastor has been charged with sexually abusing a child at his church in North Aurora.

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office said Saturday that 39-year-old Ralphael J. Robinson of Aurora is charged with one count of criminal sexual assault and one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

They said the abuse occurred April 18 at Kingdom Church in

part of a settlement that U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin called “historic.”

The judge cited literature saying inmates in solitary exhibit symptoms including hypersensitivity to stimuli, hallucinations, increased anxiety, lack of impulse control, severe and chronic depression, appetite and weight loss, heart palpitations, sleep problems and depressed brain function.

As many as 82,000 inmates are in solitary on any given day, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Illinois had about 1,830 inmates in solitary confinement as of April 14 for disciplinary reasons. An additional 148 are there for their own safety or other reasons. The state has an estimated 45,000 inmates overall, meaning Illinois is at the daily national average of about 4.4 percent for prisoners in segregation, according to federal data.

Illinois opponents of solitary confinement say many inmates are put there for minor infractions. But the most recent breakdown available, which the state provided last year to the Uptown People’s Law Center, is from 2008. The group, where Nelson now works to help inmates find legal representation, is suing Illinois over its use of solitary confinement.

The 2008 figures show that out of the 12,332 inmates placed in segregation that year, nearly a third were punished for violating rules or disobeying an order.

Robinson surrendered to police Friday after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He appeared in court Saturday morning and was being held at the Kane County jail on $100,000 bail.

It wasn’t clear late Saturday whether Robinson has an attorney who could comment on the charges on his behalf.

Kirk questions county housing agency payments

CAIRO – U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk is asking the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s inspector general to look into the nearly $20 million in federal funds given the Alexander County Housing Authority over a seven-year period.

The Southern Illinoisan in Carbondale reported that Kirk, in a letter sent last week, asked why the housing authority continued to receive funds despite indications the money was being misused by staff.

The Southern Illinoisan reported various HUD documents from 2014, 2015 and early 2016 detailed mounting concerns over mismanagement and neglect of core duties by housing authority staff.

Among issues cited in a September 2014 review, for example, were excess travel for unnecessary training conferences, inappropriate payments to the former executive director after his retirement, and inappropriate payments to employees in early retirement buyouts.

AERZEN, Germany – President Barack Obama will send an additional 250 military personnel to Syria to help local forces fighting the Islamic State group, increasing to 300 the number of U.S. forces battling extremists in the war-torn country, administration officials confirmed Sunday.

Obama was expected to announce his decision Monday during a speech in Hannover, Germany, at the close of a weeklong trip, where IS was a focus of his meetings with world leaders in Saudi Arabia, Great Britain and Germany.

About 50 U.S. special operations forces are already operating in Syria. Most of the additional 250 personnel will also be special operations forces, largely Army Green Berets.

Clinton, Trump stream ahead as rivals show signs of fading

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump surged Sunday toward another round of pivotal presidential primaries as their party leaders faced new questions about internal divisions that could complicate their nominees’ general election chances.

With less than 48 hours before voting begins across five Northeastern states, GOP front-runner Donald Trump looked to Tuesday’s contests, where he’s poised to do well, and to a foreign policy speech later in the week. Republican challenger Ted Cruz, meanwhile, abandoned the Tuesday states and instead campaigned in Indiana, which votes May 3.

On the Democratic side, underdog Bernie Sanders rallied thousands of voters in Rhode Island, looking to the smallest state in the nation for momentum even as he appeared to soften his attacks on Clinton.

“If Secretary Clinton is the nominee – and we’re not giving this thing up, we’re going all the way to California – but if she is the nominee, I would hope that she puts together the strongest progressive agenda,” Sanders said on ABC’s “This Week” before courting voters in Rhode Is-

Clinton, emerging stronger after a triumph in last week’s New York primary, stood to effectively lock up the nomination on Tuesday. The five states together offer 384 delegates, a trove that would put her only about 200 delegates short of the majority needed to clinch the nomination.

With 172 delegates at stake Tuesday on the Republican side, Trump could take a significant step toward his party’s delegate majority with the dominant performance that many polls predict.

Solar plane pilots: Trip also test of human endurance

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – The two Swiss pilots taking turns to fly a solar-powered airplane around the world said Sunday the endeavor is not only a demonstration of the importance of renewable energy but also of the many challenges the human body can endure.

Pilot Bertrand Piccard completed a risky, three-day flight across a great expanse of the Pacific Ocean while sleeping only 20 minutes at a time inside the plane’s tiny cockpit with no heat or air conditioning and while having to keep constant contact with the Europe-based control center.

“You have interviews, navigation control, communications with the control center in Monaco. You have health checks, a lot of health checks,” Piccard said. “It’s very active, there are a lot of things to do, but you can nevertheless enjoy it.”

Piccard said he uses self-hypnosis to keep his energy up and puts heating pads inside his shoes and gloves for warmth. He said he has no complaints about the ready-made meals he can warm up with a special heat packet and that can include risotto, chicken

Quit smoking; it negatively affects your circulation. Other risk factors for DVT include undergoing surgical procedures, some cancers, an inherited blood-clotting disorder, and paralysis. Women taking birth control pills should discuss avoiding DVTs with their doctor. Previous heart attack or stroke patients and those with congestive heart failure or varicose veins are also at risk.

If you’re on a long flight, make sure to get up and move around every hour or so. If traveling by car, stop every hour or two to walk around.

Drink a lot of fluids, especially water.

Piccard and Borschberg have been taking turns flying the plane on an around-the-world trip since taking off from Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, in March 2015.

It made stops in Oman, Myanmar, China, Japan and Hawaii.

The trans-Pacific legs were the riskiest part of the plane’s travels because

of the lack of emergency landing sites.

“We have demonstrated it is feasible to fly many days, many nights, that the technology works” said Borschberg, 63, who piloted the plane on a five-day trip from Japan to Hawaii and who kept himself alert by doing yoga poses and meditation.

The project has helped to show that “as a human being you can be sufficiently sustainable to be able to fly at least five days in such a plane.”

The aircraft faced a few bumps along the way.

The Solar Impulse 2 landed in Hawaii in July and was forced to stay in the islands after the plane’s battery system sustained heat damage on its trip from Japan. The team was delayed in Asia, too. When first attempting to fly from Nanjing, China, to Hawaii, the crew had to divert to Japan because of unfavorable weather and a damaged wing.

A month later, with better weather conditions, the plane left Nagoya in central Japan for Hawaii.

The plane’s ideal flight speed is about 28 mph, though that can double during the day when the sun’s rays are strongest. The carbon-fiber aircraft weighs over 5,000 pounds, about as much as a midsize truck.

cherron@shawmedia.com A lot of track and field programs would be content to capture one invitational title in a year.

But the boys and girls teams at Minooka are way past that, and the outdoor season just completed its third week.

Coach Nick Lundin’s boys squad made it three titles in three weekends against quality competition when they edged Oak Park and River Forest 83.3377.33 to claim top honors at Downers Grove South’s 16-team Cohoon Invitational last Friday.

That win was a nice compliment to the championship that the Indians won at their own invite the week before and to the one they claimed at Belleville West’s Armstrong meet on April 9. Minooka will try to make it 4 for 4 when they compete in Prospect’s Wanner Invite on Friday.

One of the keys to making a streak like that happen is to not only get a lot of high-scoring performances in some events, but also scoring a few points in as many events as possible, and the Indians have been doing a very good job of both.

In last Friday’s meet at DG South, Minooka received wins from its 4x100 relay of Colin Marchio, Maceo Findlay, Brandon Adams and Justin Wolz and from Quintin Durov in high jump and Wolz in the 300 hurdles, but they managed to score in 13 of the 18 events.

In their first three meets, the Indians have collected points in 43 out of the 55 events.

The Coohon invite also showed another strength that the Indians possess, which is that even though they’ve had to go with some different people in situations due to injuries, others have risen to the occasion in order that the team continues to enjoy success.

“Tonight was not perfect by any

means,” Lundin said after the Cohoon meet. “But it’s fallen right in line with our theme of the year of ‘No Excuses’, because we can’t have any. We just have to play with the cards that we’re dealt and go out there and perform.

“By no means are we the only team that’s having issues out there. But it’s nice to see the boys come together and perform well like they did. It was a nice team win. We had three event wins, which is what it takes in meets like these, and those might translate downstate. And there’s other things that we will depend on in late May that we didn’t load up on.”

Another squad that also took part in the meet at DG South was Lockport, and it turned in its third-straight top-five showing in a quality meet this season.

Coach Tom Razo’s Porters were fourth, the same finish they had when they last competed in a meet with Minooka, at Belleville West. They fell half a point shy of a fourth-place finish last

week when they competed at Homewood-Flossmoor.

Two athletes that the veteran Porters coach has been able to rely on are Derrius Rodgers and John Meyer, who both earned medals a year ago in Charleston.

Rodgers bettered the meet records in both the 100 and 200 on Friday, but had to settle for second place finishes behind Galesburg’s Josh Eiker. But he did get a first-place medal with a winning 4x200 relay that included Chris Gargano, Brandon Vazquez and Sheldon Snapp.

The other big story was sophomore Meyer, who a week ago established the state’s best shot put at 63-0. He went 62-5 on Friday, which shattered a meet record that was 19 years old by 4-8.

And he went 179-2 in discus, to again break a meet record that had stood for 19 years.

CINCINNATI – Anthony Rizzo’s sessions with Cubs assistant hitting coach Eric Hinske are starting to pay off.

Rizzo drove in four runs with his 10th career two-homer game, Jason Hammel pitched six sharp innings and the Cubs routed the Cincinnati Reds, 9-0, on Sunday to improve to 14-5 for the first time in 47 years.

“It’s just baseball,” said Rizzo, who has eight home runs this season. “I opened my stance a little bit but nothing major. You stay with the process. The formula is there. Things will take care of themselves.”

With Ben Zobrist and Dexter Fowler getting the day off, Tommy La Stella had his first homer of the season and two doubles in his first start at leadoff since 2014 with Atlanta, and Jason Heyward added four hits and 3 RBIs as the Cubs rebounded from their worst loss of the season, 13-5, Saturday.

“La Stella stays ready,” manager Joe Maddon said. “He comes ready to play.

We had a lot of good at-bats. It was nice that we could do this without getting Dexter or Zobrist involved. He never gets annoyed that he isn’t getting playing time. He understands his role.”

Despite Saturday’s loss, the Cubs outscored Cincinnati, 38-14, in the fourgame series, which started Thursday with Jake Arrieta’s no-hitter in a 16-0 win.

The Cubs have won six of seven against the Reds this season and nine of their past 10 over the last two seasons.

Chicago’s record over 19 games is its best since the 1969 team started 14-5. The 1907 Cubs started 16-3.

Hammel (3-0) allowed three hits with two walks, struck out a season-high seven and sparked the Cubs’ two-run second inning with a two-out single to right. He, Arrieta (4-0) and John Lackey all are at least 3-0, giving the Cubs a trio of 3-0 pitchers before May 1 for the first time in franchise history.

“He controls the strike zone,” Reds manager Bryan Price said of Hammel.

“He throws his curveball behind in the count for strikes. He’s a polished, veteran, experienced pitcher.”

Rizzo, who went into the game two homers short of tying the National League lead, hit two-run shots in each of his first two at-bats, helping the Cubs lead 8-0 after three innings.

Alfredo Simon, making his first start since getting only two outs in the shortest start of his career at Chicago on April 13, pitched 22/3 innings.

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Mat Latos felt he could’ve done better. Still, it was good enough to maintain his remarkable start.

Latos pitched six solid innings and the White Sox beat the Texas Rangers, 4-1, Sunday to complete a sweep of the three-game series.

The 6-foot-6 right-hander, who signed a $3 million, one-year deal with the Sox in February, was charged with one run and seven hits. Latos (4-0) has allowed two earned runs in 241/3 innings in his four starts while matching his win total from all of last year.

“I battled today,” he said. “I didn’t have good fastball command, I fell behind in the count early today. I was lucky. I got away with a couple of pitches to some good guys.”

Although Latos might not have been as sharp as earlier outings this season, Sox manager Robin Ventura wasn’t ready to attribute the newcomer’s success to good fortune.

“Matty threw great. He continues to impress,” Ventura said. “That’s a tough lineup to go through.”

The Rangers were swept in a series of three games or more for the first time

since last July by the Angels.

“Sometimes you tip your hat to the guy across the way, too,” Texas manager Jeff Bannister said. “Latos has been hot. He has been pitching well.”

David Robertson, who blew a save opportunity Saturday for this first time this season, struck out the side in the ninth for his seventh save.

Dioner Navarro homered and drove in two runs as the Sox won for the fifth time in six games. Brett Lawrie added two hits and an RBI. Touted Rangers rookie Nomar Mazara hit a long drive to right in the first inning for his first homer since his major league debut April 10. The ball cleared the visiting bullpen and landed about five rows into the bleachers.

Navarro tied it in the third with a drive to left field for his first homer of the season.

The Sox then grabbed the lead in the fifth. Melky Cabrera drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third when Lawrie followed with a double to right field. Cabrera scored on a wild pitch and Navarro made it 3-1 with a sacrifice fly. Lawrie singled home a run in the eighth.

Latos joined teammate Chris Sale and crosstown rival Jake Arrieta of the Cubs among the four pitchers in the major leagues at 4-0.

The Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame most often rewards head coaches who enjoyed stellar careers from a record standpoint.

Not as frequent is the inclusion of assistant coaches among the elite.

Longtime Coal City assistant Ken Miller was surprised, to say the least.

“I got a phone call in December,” said Miller, a familiar figure these days as the director of community relations for the Joliet Slammers. “The gentleman said, ‘Congratulations, you have been elected to our Hall of Fame.’

“Tears came to my eyes. It’s one thing to be recognized by people, but another to be recognized by your peers, to have your name linked to the great coaches. It’s a great honor.”

The 70-year-old Miller – Ken P. Miller – was nominated for the Hall of Fame by longtime Coal City head coach Ken W. Miller. He was inducted April 2 at the annual Hall of Fame banquet in Champaign.

After three years of coaching football at Cornell High School, Miller was hired at Coal City as a baseball and basketball coach. He coached Coalers’ varsity baseball for 17 years and varsity basketball for 10 years.

“I didn’t get into coaching football right away; we had fall baseball back then,” Miller said. “Coal City started a football program with freshmen and sophomores in 1976.”

Miller began helping with the football program in 1980 and spent 35 years on the gridiron, largely on the staffs of Ken W. Miller and current coach Lenny Onsen. He coached linebackers, receivers, quarterbacks and the offensive line at various times.

“I spent most of my time with the line,” he said.

The current president of the Coal City School Board, Miller’s final season on the football staff was in the fall of 2014. He spent 17 years teaching U.S. history, civics and physical education at Coal City, and then 17 years as the guidance counselor, a position he entered in 1985.

Despite a busy schedule, he said he stayed with football for three main reasons.

“First, it’s not as long a season as basketball,” he said. “Second, the (often poor) baseball weather in the spring. Third, football starts the school year. It was always fun to be part of that. Plus, it helped that we were successful. We had a great run, made the playoffs something like 18

It also was in 1985 when Miller’s first wife, Barbara, the mother of their two children, was killed.

“She was hit on her bicycle,” Miller said. Patricia, who now is a stayat-home mom in Coal City and tutors students in her home, was 12 at the time. Scott, who works for Caterpillar in Peoria, was 9.

“That was a really difficult time for our family,” Miller said. “But we made it through. We had to. Life goes on.”

Miller married his current wife, Colleen, in 1998. “She is a part-time math teacher at the high school,” he said. “She’s very good at it. They brought her back after she retired.”

For nearly 20 years, Miller has been a member of the Chicago Pitch

& Hit Club, which orchestrates an annual banquet that honors baseball figures from the Chicago area on all levels, the major leagues on down. He has been on the board for most of that time and is a past president.

“An old scout named Charlie Hum was a friend of mine,” he said. “He asked me if I would like to be a member. That’s how I got involved. I’ve really enjoyed my association with the Pitch & Hit Club and also with the Old Timers (Baseball Association of Will County, of which he also is a member).”

The Joliet Slammers’ first general manager, beginning in 2011, was John Dietrich, who was a Pitch & Hit club member.

“We had tickets to a Dodgers game, and John asked me if he did become the Slammers’ general manager,

would I like to go to work in Joliet,” Miller said. “I said sure.

“A lot of my responsibility is in sales. I sell season tickets once in a while. I represent the club at different organizations. I have really tried to get community nights together. I handle all donation requests.

“It’s busy, and I enjoy it. How could anything be better than working at the ballpark?”

In a sort of retirement, yet still the president the Coal City School Board and director of community relations for the Slammers. That’s the Ken Miller who wears so many hats.

“That’s what has kept me going, doing a lot,” he said.

He is a new inductee to the IHSFCA Hall of Fame, yet his life has been and is so much more than coaching football – which he did for 38 years in all.

The Associated Press RICHMOND, Va. – Carl Edwards had been grinding for 30 laps, doing everything he could to catch Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch in a two-way breakaway from the pack at Richmond International Raceway.

When he finally caught him on the last lap Sunday, and in the final turn, he had no time to think about what would be the prudent thing to do. Instead, Edwards focused on the reason they are racing: to win.

Edwards bumped his sometimes-volatile teammate off his racing line in the last turn and passed him to win his second consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, and the fourth in a row for the Gibbs racing stable.

“I wish it was anybody but my teammate that we had to race like that with, but big picture to me is we’ve both got some wins, we’re in the Chase, and it’s fun to have to race your teammate for the win,” Edwards said. “If the roles were reversed, I would have expected him to bump me the same way.”

Then in a bid to throw a bone to Busch, whose car was sponsored by Banfield Pet Hospital, he said: “If my cat ever gets sick, I

“Kyle’s an amazing teammate and it’s like he got really slow there at the end,” Edwards said. “Something happened that last lap, it’s like his rear tires went off or something, and he went down into (Turn) one and I dove it in and I got to him, and I thought, ‘Man, I’ve got something here.’ Then he went to get down to the bottom to park it in three and four and I’d already decided to go down there, so I thought, ‘Man, I’m going to give him a little nudge.’

“We’ve both got wins. We’re racing for fun and getting these trophies. Just an awesome day.”

After falling so far behind, Edwards was surprised to find himself in position to challenge for the victory.

Get your antioxidants from food Dear Dr. K: It seems like several years ago all my friends were taking antioxidant pills. Now I don’t hear about antioxidants as much. Are they worth taking?

Dear Reader: Here’s what we know, and here’s what is still controversial. The cells of our body are full of chemicals interacting with other chemicals. In the process of getting the energy they need to survive and carry out their functions, cells naturally produce chemicals called “free radicals.” Just as political free radicals can sometimes damage society, chemical free radicals can damage body tissues.

Our environment also exposes us to substances that increase our production of free radicals. Examples are tobacco smoke, ultraviolet rays and air pollution.

To fight the effect of free radicals, our body makes natural antioxidant chemicals.

We also get antioxidants in foods. In particular, several vitamins – primarily vitamins A, C and E – have antioxidant powers.

If the levels of antioxidants match the levels of free radicals, we’re in balance.

However, if free radicals exceed the antioxidants in our body, we’re out of balance. This is called “oxidative stress.” Frequent bouts of oxidative stress may increase the pace of aging.

There is very strong evidence that eating a lot of foods rich in antioxidants can help lower your risk of many diseases. Good food sources of antioxidants include fruits and vegetables, particularly tomatoes, kale, blueberries, onions and apples. Other good sources include dark chocolate, whole grains, coffee, green tea and vegetable oils.

That’s not controversial.

Here is where the controversy begins. As scientists came to better understand the balance between free radicals and antioxidants, a beautiful theory emerged. Perhaps, scientists thought, taking antioxidant vitamin supplements would slow diseases of aging.

Some scientists find their theories so attractive they don’t bother to test them.

When that happens, they cease being scientists. Much more often, scientists put their theories to the test. Because the antioxidant vitamin pill theory was so compelling, a lot of time and effort was spent in testing it.

Unfortunately, results from well-designed trials of antioxidant supplements have failed to back up many of the claims of benefits.

One study pooled results from 68 trials with more than 230,000 participants. It found taking antioxidant supplements is unlikely to help you live longer. Sixty-eight rigorous studies, involving hundreds of thousands of people whose health was followed for many years, failed to show a benefit from antioxidant vitamin supplements.

Sometimes something terrible happens to scientists: a beautiful theory is murdered by a brutal gang of facts. Those 68 studies were a brutal gang indeed.

It was good those studies were done, even if the results disappointed some scientists.

People were spending a lot more money buying these supplements than was spent conducting the research to see if they were worth taking.

To answer your question, I don’t recommend that people routinely take antioxidant vitamin supplements. Your money is better spent elsewhere.

DEAR ABBY Thirty-five years ago, my wife Jeanne was raped in her Phillips mother’s home when she was a teenager. Eight years ago, my daughter also was raped at the age of 11 in the same home. My motherin-law blames them both for having been raped. She told them if it did happen, they probably deserved it.

I don’t understand this. How can someone take the side of the perpetrator and not their own flesh and blood? How can someone who is supposed to be nurturing, loving and caring say such terrible things to her children?

I want to call her up and give her a piece of my mind, especially since both of them are passive when it comes to this woman. Can they file a lawsuit against her for mental anguish? Help. I want to help them heal from this tragedy, and I don’t know what to do. – Distraught Dad In Texas Dear Distraught: It is not unusual for families to circle the wagons when this kind of sexual assault occurs or to blame the victim. That is why the damage persists from generation to generation. It’s clear your wife’s mother is either in denial or without shame.

If the perpetrator isn’t in prison or a program for sex offenders, the person you should talk to is a detective in the police force in the city where these sexual assaults happened. If your wife and daughter haven’t received counseling for the assaults (and I’m betting they haven’t), they should find some now.

The victims didn’t “deserve” being assaulted.

Counseling may help them get in touch with their anger, aim it where it belongs, and finally release it along with their passivity – which may really be fear of expressing their emotions.

Dear Abby: My wife’s first husband died of cancer.

When we got engaged years later, she decided to keep his last name (partly in regard to her daughters) and add mine to it. She continues to display some photos of him around the house and maintains her plan to be buried with him at their common gravesite.

Whoever thinks I must be jealous or resentful about this would be wrong. I haven’t experienced a long marriage, raising children or nursing a terminally ill spouse for years. Instead of demanding my wife “prove her love” by ignoring her history, I prove my love for her – in part – by deferring to her choices.

Soon after our wedding, we learned I, too, had cancer. My case was treatable, and I am now cured, thanks to God in heaven and my wife’s tender care.

We once knew someone who couldn’t bear to think of his wife’s ever marrying after his death. He pleaded, badgered and practically forced her to vow she wouldn’t. So this is my message for men who are jealous about a deceased or hypothetical “rival”: That is your own choice, and it disgraces you. Grow out of it. A bridge expert would not make mistakes in this week’s deals, because he always keeps track of high-card points -- during the auction and as the play progresses.

This deal is relatively straightforward. Look at the North-South hands and the bidding. How should South plan the play in three no-trump after West leads a heart?

South should overcall one notrump, not make a takeout double.

Yes, he would prefer a second heart stopper, but he has to do the best he can and hope partner tables a few useful goodies. Here, North has an easy raise to game. Remember to be aggressive in these situations because partner will be able to place the cards accurately from the bidding.

West leads the heart three, low from a tripleton in a suit partner bid that he did not support. This is the one time low from length does not promise an honor in the suit.

Declarer has six top tricks: three spades, one heart, one diamond and one club. A successful finesse in either minor will bring in the extra three winners that he needs. But which finesse should he take?

There are only 13 high-card points missing, so East must have both of the minor-suit kings. Therefore, when South wins with the heart ace, he crosses to the club ace, and takes the diamond finesse three times.

Keep counting and tracking the high-card points.

The Plan & Zoning Commission will hear the request of Julco LLC regarding 19 acres of property in Heritage Crossing Corporate Center. REQUEST FOR RELEASE OF FUNDS On or about May 11, 2016, the City of Joliet will submit a request to the HUD Public Housing Chicago Field Office for the release of Housing Authority of Joliet 2016 Capital Fund Program under Grant IL06-P02450115 to undertake the following activity with a total estimated cost of $700,000.00: Demolition at AMP 1- DesPlaines Gardens, which includes the following locations: 220, 307 - 361F and 367 Desplaines Street, 104A - 106B Marion Street, 150A - 170 Wallace Street, 300 390 Water Street and 100 - 108B York Avenue, Joliet, Illinois.

FINDING OF NO SIGNIFICANT IMPACT The City of Joliet has determined that this 2016 activity will have no significant impact on the human environment. Therefore, an Environmental Impact Statement under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) is not required. RELEASE OF FUNDS The City of Joliet certifies to the HUD Public Housing Chicago Field Office that James D. HUD's approval of the certification satisfies its responsibilities under NEPA and related laws and authorities and allows the Housing Authority of Joliet to use Program funds.

OBJECTIONS TO RELEASE OF FUNDS HUD Public Housing will accept objections to its release of funds and the City of Joliet's certification for a period of fifteen days following the anticipated submission date or its actual receipt of the request (whichever is later) only if they are on one of the following bases: (a) the certification was not executed by the Certifying Officer of the City of Joliet; (b) the City of Joliet has omitted a step or failed to make a decision or finding required by HUD regulations at 24 CFR Part 58; (c) the grant recipient has committed funds or incurred costs not authorized by 24 CFR Part 58 before approval of a release of funds by HUD; or (d) another Federal Agency acting pursuant to 40 CFR Part 1504 has submitted a written finding that the project is unsatisfactory from the standpoint of environmental quality. Objections must be prepared and submitted in accordance with the required procedures (24 CFR Part 58, Sec. 58.76) and shall be addressed to Mr. William E.
