conflicts with village officials

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Were felony attempted child abduction charges filed against a Bolingbrook man because of his previous conflicts with the village, his attorney asked Thursday.

George D. Smith, 69, is facing a bench trial before Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak. On Feb. 17, 2012, a then-11-year-old George girl was walking home D. Smith from school in the 100 block of Lexington Drive when Smith drove by and offered a lift, according to trial testimony.

Defense attorney Dave Shiffer said Smith noticed the girl was carrying heavy bags and was just offering assistance, but prosecutors said when police were called to investigate Smith “minimized” the amount of contact he tried to have with the girl.

A next-door neighbor testified she’d gotten a phone call from the girl’s mother immediately after the incident and brought the girl back to her house where she was interviewed by police officers.

“I don’t remember if there were tears, but I remember that sad, pouty look on her face,” the witness told Shiffer.

Now-retired village attorney Edward Kusta Sr. testified Bolingbrook and Smith had prior legal conflicts.

Smith was cited for “disorderly conduct” on the day of the incident, but that village ordinance violation was later dismissed and felony charges were filed, according to court records.

Retired Police Chief Kevin McCarthy testified Wednesday he did not personally call the state’s attorney’s office to obtain felony charges.

Shiffer asked Kusta about “The Duck Case.” Kusta said he did recall when Smith was prosecuted for “raising a couple of ducks in the backyard of his home.”

“Do you recall he and animal control had found a home for the ducks?”

“I don’t know what happened with the ducks,” Kusta answered. Assistant State’s Attorneys Frank Byers and Katie Rabenda did not cross-examine Kusta.

Lt. Richard Hilliard acknowledged locating Smith at Clementine’s Bar on the day of the incident, but did not remember any specific conversations in the tavern.

“Did you tell people in the bar there’d been a misunderstanding and George would be back in 20 minutes?”

Shiffer asked the officer.

“I don’t recall saying that,” Hilliard said.

Hilliard also told Shiffer he had no recollection of telling the girl’s mother he did not want to charge Smith with a crime because he was a veteran.

The trial will continue Friday.

Will County Board rejects pay raises for elected officials

JOLIET – The Will County Board on Thursday rejected pay raises for five countywide elected officials positions, which would have taken effect in December at the start of the next term.

Under the proposal, the positions of auditor, coroner, circuit clerk, recorder of deeds and county executive would have received a compounded 1 percent raise each year over a four-year period.

All positions currently earn a $93,116 annual salary.

Before the vote, Democratic Caucus Chair Herbert Brooks, D-Joliet, argued in favor of the raises.

“If we miss this opportunity, it will not come back around for two more years and I think we should be proactive right now. And secondly, it doesn’t affect anyone sitting in office right now,” Brooks said. “And thirdly, it has been 12 years since this County Board has voted for any increases.”

But Will County Board Speaker Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, said the County Board needs to consider the total compensation package – including health and pension benefits – not just the base salary.

“I do think our elected officials are appropriately compensated,” Moustis said.

The Will County executive earns an additional $6,400 for serving as the county’s liquor commissioner – which was first set in 2004.

The position of Will County executive is unique to the county, so there are no comparisons in neighboring collar counties, but the remaining four county positions in Will County are lower in comparison to those in nearby McHenry, Lake and DuPage counties.

For comparison, the auditor, circuit clerk and recorder of deeds in DuPage County earn $139,835, plus $5,400 in other compensation.

McHenry, which has a smaller population, gives $104,750 to the positions of circuit clerk, coroner and recorder of deeds, according to county documents comparing salaries.

The votes were mostly down party lines with most Democrats voting for the raises and most Republicans voting against.

In other news, the County Board approved: • Private pay rate increases at the county-owned Sunny Hill Nursing Home in Joliet • $12.5 million contract with the Darienbased Wight & Co. for design and engineering services for the courthouse project • Intergovernmental agreement with the city of Lockport to provide an electronics recycling drop-off site.

JJC emerging as Hispanic-Serving Institution with growing Hispanic population

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College is on the verge of becoming a Hispanic-Serving Institution because of the increasing numbers of Hispanic students enrolled at the college.

The college could be designated as an HSI under the Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities or the U.S. Department of Education to become eligible for federal money – under Title V of the Higher Education Act – to improve education of Hispanic students.

JJC will seek to become an HSI under the federal education department, as that will expand the college’s opportunity to apply for grants to fund student-centered programs and services, Yolanda Isaacs, JJC student development vice president, said in an email.

“It also speaks to our vision statement of being the first choice for students and the community. We want all students, including our Latino/Hispanic student population and families, to choose JJC as their first choice for education and community resources,” Isaacs said in the email.

Michelle Roman-Garcia, the college’s multicultural student affairs director, said she hopes the college will be in a good place for Hispanic students when the time comes.

“The [Title V] grant can be used for many things but we want to make sure our school is more than just a school that enrolls Latino students but is also retaining them and graduating them,” Roman-Garcia said.

The Hispanic student population at JJC has been the second-largest demographic at the college, with white non-Hispanic students comprising the largest.

For the spring semester, the number of Hispanic students at JJC hit 25.3 percent and is now at the point where the college can qualify as an HSI, for which the total enrollment of Hispanic students at a minimum must consist of that amount.

According to the JJC spring 2016 census report, the number of Hispanic students at the school has gone from 3,240 students in 2012 to 3,650, representing an increase of about 12.7 percent.

Isaacs said that since the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs was established in 2004, JJC continues to commit to serving diverse students.

It does so through culturally relevant outreach programs and activities, and it received an award in 2015 from the National Endowment for the Humanities for Latino history programming.

Roman-Garcia said she thinks the Hispanic student population has been growing at the college because JJC is accessible and affordable.

Even if those students have barriers such as English language skills or not finishing high school, they can learn English or take GED preparation classes at JJC, she said.

JJC also assists undocumented students who are Hispanic through the multicultural affairs office and a support group called Dreamers Advancing in Leadership and Education.

Joliet says no guarantee for Grand Ballroom past January

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – City officials say they will try – but cannot guarantee it – to make The Grand Ballroom at Union Station available for any brides-to-be who have already scheduled wedding receptions there past January.

The banquet facility currently is operated by Bussean Custom Caters, which has notified the city that it plans to leave in mid-January.

Owner Jeffrey Bussean did not return calls to comment on how many weddings may be scheduled for Union Station past his planned departure date. But city officials said they have heard from one future bride who has a wedding scheduled for April 2017.

Joliet Economic Development Director Steve Jones said Bussean offered to move that reception to his Patrick Haley Mansion in Joliet or to provide a refund.

“A new vendor could possibly negotiate something to keep that [Union Station reception] date alive,” Jones said. “But there’s no guarantee that we’re going to have somebody in April 2017.”

Hug encouraged brides with wedding dates past mid-January to work out something with Bussean.

So did Jones.

“Bussean is the guy, and he’s the one making arrangements and commitments,” Jones said. “I think what Bussean is doing is he’s making people aware that he’s planning on leaving in January.”

According to Jones, Bussean will continue to operate Patrick Haley Mansion and a banquet facility he has in Alsip. But Bussean told city officials he wants to scale back at Union Station as he develops another facility in Wayne, Jones said.

The timing for finding a new banquet operator is somewhat dependent on Bussean right now. Jones said the city has provided its request for proposals to Bussean’s business for review in case the organization has any suggestions.

“They’re in the process of reviewing it for us,” said Jones.

Once Bussean is done, he said, the city will send the request out to banquet operators and related companies throughout the Chicago area based on a list that is being developed.

New Joliet dog law sets requirements for owners of dangerous animals

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A tougher dog ordinance that forces owners to take more responsibility is slated to go to the City Council for a vote May 3.

The council Land Use and Legislative Committee this week approved both the dog ordinance and an intergovernmental agreement with Joliet Township Animal Control.

Together, the ordinance and agreement spell out procedures for handling dangerous and vicious dogs while requiring that the owners of the dogs take measures to ensure public safety.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Councilwoman Jan Quillman said.

“We at least now have something we can enforce.”

The ordinance and agreement were crafted after a series of meetings in which residents said the city’s dog laws and enforcement are too lax.

Both Quillman and Councilman Jim McFarland, also on the committee, said they believe the new ordinance allows the city to crack down on owners who let dangerous dogs roam their neighborhoods.

“Now we can go after them for basically being a bad dog owner and not taking care of their animal,” McFarland said.

The ordinance had been in the works for months before a pit bull attack in January added new urgency to the action as residents attended one of the committee’s meetings to complain about repeated attacks by loose dogs.

The ordinance requires that dogs

determined to be vicious after they have killed or seriously injured a person or companion animal be euthanized.

The owners of dogs determined to be dangerous because they posed an unjustified threat of injury to a person or companion animal would face several requirements: • The dog must be under direct control of someone age 18 or older and under leash and muzzle when on public property • Owners must have liability insurance with a policy limit of at least $100,000 • A sign must be posted prominently outside the home saying “Warning: Dangerous Dog Kept on These Premises” • Owners must give the city notice

if the dog is moved away from the owner’s residence.

A city hearing officer could also force owners to reimburse victims for any damages their dogs cause when they attack.

The intergovernmental agreement with Joliet Township Animal Control outlines procedures and response times for dog incidents.

A number of people who came to meetings complained that it was unclear who they were supposed to call when a dog attack occurred and who would respond.

“I think it helps clarify a few things,” Joliet Township Animal Control Director Sarah Gimbel said of the agreement, “and helps build communication between the township and the city.”

March for Babies walk scheduled for Sunday in Plainfield If you go

kschott@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Beth and Johnny Russler are proud to be the Ambassador Family for this weekend’s March for Babies.

The event is a fundraiser for the March of Dimes, an organization the Minooka couple considers an extension of their family. The 5K walk in Plainfield – from Village Green Park to Renwick Park and back – raises money for research that leads to healthy babies.

But for the Russlers, teachers in Lincoln-Way School District 210, it’s so much more. It’s a way to give back to an organization that, during their darkest times, gave them support and hope.

The Russlers, of Minooka, were expecting a baby girl in February 2014. Baby Reese’s room was ready when Beth’s water broke. But heartbreak awaited: They arrived at the hospital to learn Reese was stillborn, because of a kink in the umbilical cord.

Through the devastation, the couple connected with March of Dimes, Johnny said, and took part in a March for Babies walk.

“It was rough to go and walk the first year. We didn’t have our daughter,” he said. “But the people who came out there, you know that you are loved, and that

put on strict bed rest. At 26.5 weeks, John Thomas Jr., or JJ, and Lucille Katherine, or Lucy, were born. JJ spent three months in the neonatal intensive care unit, and Lucy spent four months there.

Johnny said both kids are doing great, although Lucy has “some bumps in the road, nothing that can’t get straightened out.” The couple knows they are blessed: There were families in the NICU who, when they left the ward for the final time, did so without a child to bring home.

When asked to be the Ambassador Family – who serve as the face of the

March of Dimes mission – for this year’s walk, Johnny said they were honored.

Greg Carrell, organizer for the Will County March for Babies, said besides the walk, attendees can expect food, games and music. Those who attend do so to support the March of Dimes mission, which since 2003 has focused its research on preventing premature births.

“If we were sitting in this building and someone ran over a child, wouldn’t you run out and say what is going on? Everyone says, yes,” Carrell said. “Well, there are more children dying of premature [birth] than are dying by being run over by cars.”

Taking part in the walk could lead, through March of Dimes research, to fewer families having to go through what his did, Johnny said.

“A lot of people think, ‘What can I do?

I’m just one person,’ ” Johnny said. “But it takes one person to get a movement going.”

JOLIET – Several cars caught fire Thursday at a junkyard on East Washington Street, police and fire officials said.

The fire was contained to the junkyard, Joliet Fire Chief Joseph Formhals said. Joliet police had streets blocked off about a block away from the junkyard as firefighters worked on putting out the fire. The smoke in the sky was visible from miles away. Near the scene some patrons of area establishments looked on. But Formhals said there wasn’t any danger of the fire spreading beyond the scrapyard.

“Throughout the years we’ve had numerous calls out there for the same thing,” Formhals said. “The biggest problem out there is water supply.”

Lockport not ready to support WESCOM against county

Shaw Media Correspondent LOCKPORT – Lockport city officials are not yet ready to join other municipalities that fall under Will County’s WESCOM 911 dispatch center in considering a resolution opposing the county’s recent proposal to fully fund a new center in its eastern region.

Will County leaders recently offered to pay for a new $5 million dispatch center, which would be included in its proposed $20 million to $25 million sheriff’s center on Route 52 and Laraway Road.

The county would use saved Regional Transportation Authority sales tax dollars.

This is part of its plan to comply with a state mandate for all counties to cut down by half dispatch facilities by July 1, 2017. The county has six dispatch centers and the plan is to ultimately have three –

WESCOM, Joliet’s and the new one.

The agencies that would come under the new center would not be required to pay for construction costs, and only operational costs through county taxes.

WESCOM, which serves 21 user agencies including both Lockport police and fire districts, recently built a $5.1 million facility in Plainfield. Channahon, one of its member agencies, issued general obligation bonds necessary to cover the costs of the construction of the building.

All 21 of WESCOM’s user agencies are paying for the construction costs of the new facility through user fees because the county refused to help with any funding for construction, Stephen Rauter, executive director of WESCOM, told Lockport Committee of the Whole members at their regular meeting Wednesday.

Users of the new facility would be getting a “free” building, he said.

Bolingbrook recently passed a reso-

lution calling out the county’s decision to subsidize the new center as “misguided” and created an “imbalance of debt responsibility.”

Lockport Fire Chief David Skoryi recently said the fire district board will consider its own resolution Wednesday. The WESCOM board expects to adopt its own resolution May 19, Rauter said.

Lockport Police Chief Terry Lemming told the committee that Lockport residents would essentially be paying for both dispatch centers with the WESCOM users fees for its building costs and county taxes to cover costs of the new facility.

“This is not fair to the city of Lockport and its residents,” Lemming said.

Both Rauter and Lemming urged the committee members to draft an opposition resolution requesting that the county come up with a solution to make the situation more “fair and equitable” for all parties.

Rauter, in a later interview, said the county could decide to help offset WESCOM’s debt or operational costs and prevent the possibility of members deciding to leave for the “free” Laraway facility.

Lockport Mayor Steven Streit said that the City Council would need to hear “the county’s side of it” before making any decision.

“We will talk to the county and see if there is a more fair and equitable solution,” he said.

Alderman Darren Deskin said only users of the new eastern dispatch center should be required to pay for it, but that he would support whatever decision the City Council ultimately makes. If the city does move forward with a resolution in support of WESCOM, City Administrator Ben Benson said it would need to soften the language used in the Bolingbrook resolution, which he said was “spicy.”

Troy school board OKs Romeoville Village Board new science curriculum OKs $97 million budget

aschier@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Troy School District 30-C students will learn science in the fall using a new curriculum after it was approved Wednesday by the Board of Education. Called STEMscopes, the inquiry-based curriculum offers a range of methods for students to learn science and aligns with new state standards, according to district officials.

“It was well overdue for us to make this adjustment,” Superintendent Todd Koehl said.

The curriculum received a yes vote from all school board members in attendance at Wednesday’s meeting. Treasurer Anne Carney and board member Cathy Besler were absent.

STEMscopes correlates with the Next Generation Science Standards, which are newly adopted by the state and will be implemented in classrooms next year, according to Troy Director of Curriculum and Assessment Daniela Fountain.

Koehl said Troy updated its math and English language arts curriculums within the last three years, but science was due for an update. The district waited to

make the change for the state to adopt the new science standards and for curriculum providers to incorporate more technology in its offerings, he said.

STEMscopes looks at science through scopes – or specialized topics – and blends technology-based, practical and textbook learning, according to Koehl. The curriculum includes hands-on experiment kits and digital material students can access at school or at home, Fountain said.

Training and pilots for STEMscopes began this school year, according to Koehl, and the curriculum received positive feedback from educators regarding its teachability. STEMscopes will be fully implemented in the fall. The curriculum will cost Troy about $100,000 annually for five years, Fountain said.

Also Wednesday, the board voted to appoint three new assistant principals to replace administrators who had either been promoted internally or left the district, Koehl said. Jennifer Munday will be assistant principal of William B. Orenic Intermediate School, Jessica Yborra will be assistant principal of Crossroads Elementary School and Carole Zurales will be assistant principal of Shorewood Elementary School.

ROMEOVILLE – During its meeting Wednesday, the Romeoville Village Board passed the 2016-17 budget. The total budget is $97 million, according to a village news release, and includes no new taxes and a decreased tax rate.

“We’ve worked very hard to provide a budget that includes many new projects that will benefit the residents and community while keeping taxes low,” Mayor John Noak said in the news release.

Some of the capital projects in the 2016-17 budget include:

• Completion of Fire Station 1 • Increased funding for street repairs and resurfacing • Begin construction on the new Metra station • Implement the Romeoville Reinvestment Program • Install a trail at Airport and Weber roads • Park improvements at O’Hara Woods Preserve and Century and Green Haven parks.

Finance Director Kirk Openchowski said Thursday the village balanced the 2016-17 budget using $6.2 million in accumulated fund balance dollars for capital projects.

SENECA – Hundreds of local residents came out Thursday evening to a meeting held at Seneca High School to express concerns about a proposed privately funded $8 billion rail line project that, if built, would cut through Grundy County farmland.

As proposed, the Great Lakes Basin Railroad project would run 275 miles from La Porte, Indiana, to Milton, Wisconsin. Those spearheading the effort filed paperwork in March with the federal Surface Transportation Board, which triggered a series of public hearings called scoping meetings. The STB is the governmental agency responsible for approving or denying the project on its merits while examining potential environmental impacts.

The filing also caused an avalanche of objections to the project, leading to the hundreds of people who flooded Thursday’s meeting to express their concerns.

“We had no notice at all,” she said after speaking. “He talked to us years ago and discussed putting the rail line on the Illiana right-of-way. This project is different. The Illiana is dead and he has not spoke to us again.”

Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter said he attended Thursday to listen to residents and said he has reached out to Frank Patton, founder and managing partner of Great Lakes Basin Transportation.

Patton has agreed to a public meeting held in Grundy County the first week in May, Welter said.

“My goal is to meet with him the first week in May at a place that can accommodate the public,” Welter said.

LOCAL BRIEFS Groundbreaking set for forest preserve access, dog park

CRETE TOWNSHIP – The Forest Preserve District of Will County has scheduled a groundbreaking ceremony for May 6 for a new forest preserve access area and dog park at Plum Valley Preserve in Crete Township.

The groundbreaking will start at 10 a.m. at the southeast corner of Burville Road and Route 394. Attendees are encouraged to wear shoes that are appropriate for walking on uneven terrain, according to a news release from the district. Phase 1 of the Plum Valley Preserve Burville Road Access project includes a parking lot; an off leash dog park with three separate enclosures, each containing benches and a shelter; a picnic shelter to accommodate 50 people; an information board; and a natural surface trail around the dog park.

The dog park and the Burville Road Access are scheduled to open in 2017.

Phases 2 and 3 of Plum Valley Preserve improvements are proposed to include extensions of the 3.15-mile Plum Creek Greenway Trail and the development of an equestrian parking lot. For informa-

Driver severely injured, airlifted after crash near Lincoln-Way West

NEW LENOX TOWNSHIP – Two people were injured – one severely – in a crash midday Thursday near Lincoln-Way West High School.

The incident occurred about 11:40 a.m. at Spencer and Gougar roads in New Lenox Township, according to Vincent Gambino, a sergeant with the Will County Sheriff’s Office traffic division.

A car traveling eastbound on Spencer Road went through a red light, Gambino said, hitting a delivery truck going northbound on Gougar Road. The driver of the car was airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood with life-threatening injuries, according to Gambino, while the truck driver was transported to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The cause of the crash is unknown, and no one yet has been charged, Gambino said.

The intersection remained closed about two hours after the incident.

Gladys Mae Knickrehm, age 87, of Peotone, passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at Miller Health Care Center in Kankakee.

She was born on May 6, 1928, in Manhattan, IL, the daughter of the late Fred and Minnie (Betttenhausen) Krapf. She married the late Kenneth H. Knickrehm on June 17, 1951, at the Green Garden United Methodist Church. He passed away on June 10, 1999. She was a sales associate at JCPenney for over 20 years. Gladys was an active member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Peotone, the church’s Women’s Fellowship, and the Peotone American Legion Auxiliary. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed painting, sewing, quilting, baking and crafts. Gladys especially enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities and sporting events. She also enjoyed watching sports, especially the Chicago Blackhawks.

Throughout her life, Mary was very musically inclined. In the 1930’s she attended Loretto High School (Englewood) in Chicago on scholarship.

She was to play piano, but ended up playing violin, first chair, in the school’s orchestra, an instrument which was self-taught. In the early 1940’s, Mary studied piano at the Chicago Conservatory. She also played the organ at St. Augustine’s Parish in Chicago. In 1958, CLARENCE R. SHENK JR. Mary and Tom moved their growing family to Homer Township (Homer Glen). It was here Clarence R. The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Surveillance video shows more than a dozen people doing nothing to help a Chicago bartender as he is attacked, left unconscious on the street and accidentally run over by a taxi.

Marques Gaines, 32, later died at a hospital. His family has filed a wrongful death and negligence lawsuit against several businesses and taxi companies in his Feb. 7 death.

The video shows Gaines leaving a

convenience store and chatting with other people outside before getting into a confrontation with a man wearing a hooded jacket. That man shoves Gaines. The video then shows someone punch Gaines, who falls to the ground unconscious.

Several people are then seen approaching Gaines. The Chicago Tribune reported that Gaines’ family said his cellphone and debit card were stolen. Chicago police said they cannot confirm Gaines was robbed.

approached Gaines walking away as he lies on the ground. Several other people ignore Gaines as they walk by.

Then, a taxi turning onto the street where Gaines is lying runs over his body.

“I’ve never heard of anything like this where people just walk by a person lying in the street and nobody helps,” Gaines’ aunt Phyllis Nelson, who raised him after his parents died, said at a news conference Thursday. “I just don’t understand it.”

Legislation would encourage reporting sex assault

CHICAGO – A group of Illinois prosecutors and advocates said new legislation would encourage more victims of sexual assault to report the crime to authorities.

A Senate committee advanced the measure to the full Senate on Wednesday.

It would require police and 911 call centers to adopt policies for responding to sexual assaults that are more sensitive toward victims.

Law enforcement officers also would be required to complete a written report of every complaint, regardless of where it occurred or who is reporting it.

The measure was drafted in response to studies that suggest only 5 percent to 20 percent of rapes are reported to law enforcement. Attorney General Lisa Madigan said the legislation will help “ensure that justice is being served.”

2 state parks close because of lack of electric, trash

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area and Horseshoe Lake State Park are closing indefinitely.

The department said Wednesday that Ramsey Lake in central Illinois will close because of termination of electrical service. Horseshoe Lake in southern Illinois near Granite City will close because of termination of trash and electrical service.

Emanuel: Changes coming for Chicago police cases

CHICAGO – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced changes in the way police-involved shootings and police misconduct cases are handled on Thursday, but drew immediate criticism for stopping short of abolishing the agency that handles those investigations as a task force has urged him to do.

Suburban man sentenced to 52 years in wife’s murder

WHEATON – A suburban Chicago man who pleaded guilty to killing his wife and wounding her son in 2013 has been sentenced to 52 years in prison.

Kurtis Worley of Addison was sentenced Wednesday in DuPage County Circuit Court for the stabbing death of Martha Worley. The 35-year-old Worley slashed his 15-year-old stepson’s throat after the boy and his 12-year-old brother heard their mother scream and tried to intervene.

Before Worley’s sentencing, prosecutors played a portion of the younger boy’s 911 call. He can be heard yelling, “He’s killing my mom! Please hurry!”

Worley told Judge Liam Brennan that he was drinking heavily to numb the pain from seeing his wife with another man.

Pop superstar Prince dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHANHASSEN, Minn. – Prince, one of the most inventive and influential musicians of modern times with hits including “Little Red Corvette,” ‘’Let’s Go Crazy” and “When Doves Cry,” was found dead at his home Thursday in suburban Minneapolis, according to his publicist. His publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, told The Associated Press that the superstar “died at his home this morning at Paisley Park.” The local sheriff said deputies found Prince unresponsive in an elevator late Thursday morning after being summoned to his home, but that first-responders couldn’t revive him.

No details about what may have caused his death have been released. Prince postponed a concert in Atlanta on April 7, saying he had fallen ill with the flu, and he apologized to fans during a makeup concert last week.

President Barack Obama, for whom Prince was a White House guest last year, said he and his wife “joined millions of fans from around the world” in mourning Prince’s sudden death.

Leave Earth better than we found it

Friday marks the 46th Earth Day, a movement that was started in hopes of motivating people to action to save the planet. But even in 1970, its principles weren’t new. Although environmental issues raise political hackles in some circles, preservation and conservation run deep in America’s DNA. It doesn’t mean everyone needs to move into 180-square-foot tiny houses run on solar power, although that idea appeals to some. It means leaving the Earth better than we found it, and passing on that simple mantra to the next generation.

It’s an effort that takes more than a single day to accomplish. It’s a lifestyle worth adopting year-round.

So this Earth Day, take a moment to decide which small changes you can make to help the Earth.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (www.epa.gov) offers a few tips: • Change five lightbulbs. Replacing your five most frequently used lightbulbs with Energy Star qualified products will save you about $70 a year on energy bills. They generate 75 percent less heat and use about 75 percent less energy than standard lighting.

• Carpool when possible to reduce energy consumption.

• Rely on reusable goods, such as food and beverage containers and shopping bags.

• Recycle, and buy recycled products.

• Donate your old clothing to charity.

• Limit food waste and start a compost pile for what is thrown out.

Most people don’t realize how much food they throw away – more than 35 million tons in 2013 – and about 95 percent ends up in landfills or combustion facilities.

• To reduce outdoor water use, plant a water-smart landscape by using low water-using and native plans.

Leave grass clippings on the lawn as fertilizer.

And while you are thinking about ways to help the planet this Earth Day, don’t forget to get out and enjoy it.

Numbers still back dropping lieutenant governor State Rep. David McSweeney is back with a cause he first championed three years ago – a constitutional amendment to abolish the office of Illinois lieutenant governor. We liked the idea when he proposed it in 2013, and we’re just as supportive today, even considering any concerns about the comparative savings the idea produces.

Daily Herald political editor Mike Riopell astutely reported that the estimated savings of eliminating the office – $1.6 million – would not, at least in the first year, cover the legally required cost of mailing the amendment to every household in Illinois, an estimated $2.4 million.

But that short-term complication can be easily addressed, and doesn’t overrule the long-term wisdom of joining eight other states that dispense with the notion of a secondary constitutional office with few practical responsibilities beyond taking on assignments from the governor and otherwise waiting in the wings to step in if something bad happens.

McSweeney’s proposal would move

the succession to the state attorney general.

The easiest response to the mailing objection is to eliminate the statutory language that requires it.

But even if the mailing could not be avoided, the numbers still favor elimination of the lieutenant governor position. Within a little over a year, the state would have covered the cost of the mailing and would begin reaping the annual savings.

Granted, in the face of a $35 billion state budget and billions of dollars in unpaid bills, savings of $1.6 million can almost seem paltry.

But at the same time, we can think of a lot of social service agencies right now that would be very happy to put that $1.6 million to use helping Illinoisans in need, and that seems a better use for the money than to support an office whose duties vary widely in importance depending on the skills and interests of the person holding it.

The current lieutenant governor, Evelyn Sanguinetti of Wheaton, has made a legitimate contribution by

heading up a task force on government consolidation for Gov. Bruce Rauner. But not everyone in the position has done so well. In 1981, thenLt. Gov. Dave O’Neal even resigned, declaring the job to be too boring.

No, the state is not going to solve its fiscal woes through the mere elimination of a minor constitutional office nor the savings of another measure we support, consolidating the treasurer’s and comptroller’s offices. But, as Sanguinetti herself indicates, such actions do make a statement that we are serious about operating efficiently.

So, yes, let’s start saving money by first eliminating the unnecessary requirement for mailing the text of a constitutional amendment to every household in Illinois, then build on it by eliminating the lieutenant governor’s office and merging the treasurer and comptroller.

Like the man says, a million here, a million there, pretty soon we’ll be talking about some real money.

Shaw Media Correspondent PLAINFIELD – On Thursday, Plainfield South’s baseball team traveled to Plainfield Central with the hopes of playing two games in this Southwest Prairie Conference matchup.

While the Cougars and Wildcats played parts of two games, they only were able to complete the first as South rallied to capture a 3-2 victory.

A day earlier at South, the game was suspended because of rain in the top of the fifth with Central at bat with the bases loaded and one out in a scoreless game.

On Thursday, Cougars junior Jor-

dan Mikel got the call to start the suspended game. He promptly retired the two Wildcats batters in the top of the inning on a strikeout and a come-backer to get out of the jam.

In the bottom of the fifth, South’s Nick Mayerhofer was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a balk.

Central’s coach John Rosner went to the mound and brought in Sultan Solebo. He picked up the loss to South in the first game of this three game series on Tuesday.

Solebo retired all three he faced in the inning but a passed ball gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead heading to the sixth.

“I was hoping not to have to go to

Sultan,” Rosner said. “But our starter, Cade Thornberry, just didn’t look himself. We bounced back in the sixth and everything looked good.”

With one out in the sixth, the Wildcats Collin Hudetz doubled to right center. With two outs, consecutive walks to David Ascencino and Kyle Cockrell loaded the bases. Branden Callender hit a single to right and scored two to take a 2-1 lead.

Gabe Wair led off the bottom of the sixth for South (12-4, 5-3) with a walk.

Then with one out, Mikel smashed a fastball over the left-field fence to give South a 3-2 lead. Mikel retired the Wildcats (10-6, 4-4) in the seventh to pick up the win.

“Sultan had struck me out when I faced him before,” Mikel said. “I was in a good hitters count and he challenged me with a fastball and that was what I was looking for. It feels good to hit the game-winning homer and get the victory on the mound. Especially when I walked two to get the bases loaded and we were then down 2-1. I have a pretty relaxed attitude and forget what just happened. I don’t let things bother me.”

Mikel was back on the mound to also start the second game.

Again, weather played a factor as the game was suspended after two complete innings with South ahead 1-0.

the Hilltoppers fell behind for good at 21-19 after a long serve and a kill from Meyer.

Reardon collected his final kill to make it, 21-20, but the RedHawks ended things by scoring the final four points as both Coogan and Chris Omiecinski added two more kills apiece.

“Knowing that our first conference game was on the road against a really tough team on the other side of the net, we’ve been working on a lot of things in practice that we’re looking to translate into our games,” Marist coach Jordan Vidovic said. “It’s not perfect, but getting into these situations and getting this game experience is the only way that we’re going to learn.

“So while it may not have been as clean as we would have liked on our side, or as consistent as we’re looking for, to tough it out and pull out the win is huge, too, so we take a positive out of that. And we’ll learn from the little technical things that we need to clean up on our side.”

“Coach told me today at school that I would start both games, so I was mentally prepared,” Mikel said. “It was a little stressful knowing that the bases were loaded in the suspended game.

But getting the first strikeout really relaxed me and I know my defense behind me is good.”

“Jordan has a rubber arm and I knew he could start both,” South coach Phil Bodine said.

“He is just so raw with knowledge, he was getting behind hitters but got the job done. After he gave up the run I heard him singing a song in the one deck circle before he hit the home run. He is a fun kid, he doesn’t let stuff bother him.

“Playing these type of games – suspended, regular and everyday really doesn’t affect this team. I think it affects the coaches more than the players. We have good depth at pitching and that helps.”

The Wildcats coach was disappointed to see the makeup game slip away.

“We just didn’t execute after we got the lead,” Rosner said.

JOLIET – While Joliet Catholic Academy boys volleyball coach Rhyen Staley is pleased with the progress his squad had made since the start of the year, he also realizes there’s still more work that needs to be done.

With several young and inexperienced players asked to make major contributions, the Hilltoppers still have stretches where they make costly mistakes at bad moments. That was the case in Thursday’s East Suburban Catholic Conference clash against Marist.

The RedHawks used better starts and had more good finishes to help them rally for a 23-25, 25-23, 25-20 win in their ESCC opener while JCA suffered its first conference loss.

“We’re having some growing pains with this group,” Staley said. “We have three sophomores and one converted setter to libero, and they’re still trying

to figure things out. But we left our last huddle asking, ‘Are we better than that first week?’ And we’re dynamically better than that. So our goal is to go 5-0 this weekend at Palatine and then to win at Benet on Tuesday.

“We know Marist is going to be a top seed in their sectional and a team that possibly makes it downstate. So to battle with them, even though we’re down 10-4 or 8-4 in every set, the guys need to learn that’s not how good teams play, it’s point-for-point all the way through and you turn a few here and there. I thought Marist did a better job of getting a jump on us early and then kind of finishing at the end a little better than us and their experience helped.”

The Hilltoppers (9-6, 3-1) actually experienced their worst start in the only set that they won, which was the opener. They fell behind 10-5 after a 6-0 run and trailed 15-8 before staging a comeback against the RedHawks (13-4, 1-0).

Lewis earns berth in MIVA title match SUBMITTED REPORT

CHICAGO – For a fifth straight season, the Lewis men’s volleyball team is going to the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association championship match.

The No. 12-ranked Flyers topped No. 10 Loyola, 3-1 (28-26, 25-20, 20-25, 25-16), Wednesday night at Gentile Arena in the 2016 MIVA semifinals.

Lewis (19-12) will play at Ohio State at 6 p.m. Saturday in the MIVA title game. The Buckeyes are the No. 1 seed in the MIVA Tournament. Lewis entered Wednesday’s match as the No. 4 seed. Loyola (20-8) was the No. 2 seed.

The Flyers are the first No. 4 seed to advance to the MIVA final since 2006. A win Saturday would give Lewis the automatic bid in the NCAA tournament.

A big reason for Lewis’ success Wednesday was service pressure. Lewis had nine aces to Loyola’s six. The serving helped the Flyers out-hit Loyola, .333 to .262.

“Our floaters (servers) did a great job putting a ton of pressure on,” Lewis coach Dan Friend said of the Flyers’ serving. “Then our guys capitalized on those opportunities.”

After being down, 20-18, in the first set, Lewis rallied to earn set point at 2423. Loyola denied three set points before the fourth was the charm for Lewis.

Loyola was up 15-11 in the second set when Lewis came alive with five straight points. The Flyers never trailed again in the set. All told, Lewis finished

the set on a 14-5 run.

Loyola bounced back to win set three, out-hitting Lewis, .379 to .103. But the fourth was all Lewis. The Flyers never trailed and forced Loyola to take

two timeouts by the time Lewis went up, 14-9.

“In game three, we made some errors and let them back in it,” Friend said. “In game four, we cleaned up those errors.”

Slammers name Charley Lau Jr. hitting coach SUBMITTED REPORT

JOLIET – The teachings of the legendary Charley Lau, the former White Sox hitting coach, will live on display at Silver Cross Field this summer with the signing this week of Charley Lau Jr. as the Slammers’ hitting coach.

Lau Jr. picked up where his father left off. After spending time coaching in the minor leagues, he began teaching privately to players of all ages.

From little leaguers to professionals, Lau’s goal has been to carry on his father’s legacy.

After years spent breaking down the swing of players such as Alex Rodriguez, Lau has become one of the most sought-after hitting coaches in the nation. He published “Lau’s Laws of Hitting” in 2000, which remains the highest-selling baseball instructional book. He also produced a three-part DVD series called “Secrets of the

Swing.”

On why he chose to join the Slammers, Lau said, “I’ve worked with individuals at all levels, and I look forward to proving that I can have the same kind of impact with an entire team. I’m excited to contribute to the overall improvement of the offense.”

Other newcomers to the Slammers’ roster include right-handed pitcher Matt Hobgood.

The Glendale, Arizona Charley Lau Jr. native is a former firstround draft pick of the Baltimore Orioles. He was selected fifth overall in 2009 and has spent six seasons in professional baseball, advancing to Double A with the Orioles.

He has battled injuries and comes to the Slammers for an opportunity to start and prove to major league teams he is healthy.

“We are happy to have Matt join our club and hope this is a stepping stone for him to make his way to the big leagues,” Slammers manager Jeff Isom said.

Alex Moore, another right-handed pitcher, comes to the Slammers after being drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2014. Moore quickly moved up to A-Advanced Brevard County. The McCordsville, Indiana native sat out last season and will compete for a bullpen spot.

“For a player to get drafted and make the jump to High A and throw as well as he did, it’s pretty impressive,” Isom said.

Kevin Simmons from Selma, Alabama and Tyler Levine of East Meadow, New York also will compete for spots on the staff. Simmons was an Arizona Diamondbacks farmhand and averaged almost a strikeout per inning and less than a hit an inning.

Levine stood out at a workout with a good changeup that he commanded well.

Melvin Rodriguez of Manati, Puerto Rico is a new infield candidate for the Slammers. He hit .422 with 65 RBIs in 58 games last season at Jackson State, was a first-team All-American and was drafted in the 18th round by the Washington Nationals.

“I like his power numbers and his ability to take a walk,” Isom said. “In his career, he has more walks than strikeouts.”

Players report to the Frontier League Tryout Camp and Draft on Monday and Tuesday at the Corn Crib in Normal.

Players begin reporting for spring training Wednesday.

The Slammers have home exhibition games May 7, 9 and 10, begin the regular season May 12 at Windy City and have their home opener May 17.

Arrieta throws 2nd career no-hitter

The Associated Press CINCINNATI – The Cubs’ Jake Arrieta pitched his second no-hitter in a span of 11 regular-season starts, shutting down the Cincinnati Reds in a 16-0 rout Thursday.

The reigning NL Cy Young winner threw the first no-hitter in the majors this season.

Arrieta (4-0) struck out six, walked four and allowed only six balls hit out of the infield. He threw 119 pitches, retiring Eugenio Suarez on a routine fly to right field to end it.

“It feels different the second time,” said Arrieta, who did his best pitching in the last few innings with the no-hitter in reach. “I was a little more relaxed as the game progressed.”

Arrieta threw his first career no-hitter Aug. 30 at Dodger Stadium, beating Los Angeles 2-0.

“What can I say?” manager Joe Maddon said. “Man, it was spectacular.”

Arrieta is among several pitchers in the past decade to pitch two no-hitters. The 30-year-old righty is on the list with Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Tim Lincecum and Homer Bailey, who threw the only other no-hitter at Great American Ball Park on July 2, 2013, against the Giants.

NEW LENOX – For the second night in a row, Lincoln-Way West’s boys volleyball team was pushed to three-game matches and both times, the Warriors came out on top.

After topping nonconference foe Naperville North, 25-20, 19-25, 25-22, on Wednesday, West (15-1, 3-0) beat Homewood-Flossmoor, 21-25, 25-22, 2520, in Thursday’s SouthWest Suburban match.

Against H-F, Scott Christensen and Max Rosenfeld had 15 and 12 kills, respectively, while Jon Rossi dished out 30 assists for the Warriors (15-1, 3-0).

Say this for the White Sox, they have some fight-to-the-finish moxie.

But do they have enough ammunition?

On a day when John Danks starts and the opponent is held to three runs, it’s not too much to expect victory, but the light-hitting Sox (10-6) threatened in the ninth but came up short in a 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, settling for a split of a four-game series.

The Sox say not to worry, this 1/10 of a season sample size is small. But a level of frustration exists knowing some extra pop – with the American League leading pitching they’ve put out there – could have them standing at 12-4 or 13-3 right now. The Sox have scored three runs or fewer in 10 of their games and have lost three games when holding opponents to three runs or fewer.

A longstanding tradition of excellence American Legion band to perform benefit concert featuring classical music

JOLIET – Joliet’s American Legion Band is known for its lively foot-tapping marching songs, often played in a picnic atmosphere.

But that won’t be the case with band’s spring benefit concert April 30.

Director Tom Drake of Lockport said the band will present a formal classical program on the indoor stage at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park & Theatre in Joliet, playing the type of music it performs at national competitions.

“The public never hears the band do those kinds of things,” Drake said.

Proceeds from the concert will go toward band expenses for the national senior band competition Aug. 27 in Cincinnati as part of the American Legion’s 98th National Convention.

Drake said this concert is dedicated to his good friend, the late Stephen Platko, a prolific Joliet composer who wrote a piece for the American Legion Band.

The band will play that piece, “Broad Stripes and Bright Stars” at the spring concert. Drake wishes Platko could be there to hear it.

“He was supposed to guest conduct the number,” Drake said.

Other pieces the band will perform during the two-hour concert include a portion of Richard Wagner’s romantic “Lo-

hengrin” and “Symphony No. 5” by Dmitri Shostakovich.

Drake said the concert is intended for all ages, despite its sophisticated selections.

“I think the kids will appreciate it,” Drake said. “One of the things that creates excitement in music is dynamic volume and Wagner’s music is very dynamically strong. It tends to excite the listener.”

A long, rich history

According to its website, the American Legion Band is a longtime Joliet tradition with a sound reminiscent of John Philip Sousa. Through the years, the band has performed for seven United States presidents and has been awarded 38 national and 52 state titles.

Band President Ed Periu of Joliet, who joined in 1970 at the suggestion of his trumpet teacher, said co-founders Archie McAllister Jr. and Bill Austin had competed nationally with the Joliet Township High School Band when they were students and wanted to keep playing.

When McAllister and Austin returned home in 1945 after serving in World War II, they formed a community band and named it the A.R. McAllister Memorial Band, in honor of McAllister’s father, Archie McAllister Sr., who had directed the Township High School Band and had died.

In 1946, the band attended a national competition wearing their service uniforms.

“They won first place in the competition, got three standing ovations and ended up playing three additional times,” Periu said.

Through the years, the American Legion Band has built a solid reputation of excellent music, integrity and lauding people who serve their country and community: veterans, police officers and firefighters.

“We feel it’s a good way to show our appreciation,” Periu said.

Clarinet player Gary Picha of Plainfield joined the American Legion Band when he was 14. Picha’s current stand partner is his adult daughter, Erin Picha, also a clarinet player, who joined the band in 2012.

Gary said he became a member for the first time in 1978 at the encouragement of his uncle, Bob Picha, another a clarinet player, who had joined the band in 1960 and remained a member until his death in October.

“At one point, we had five members from our immediate family involved, all clarinet players,” Gary Picha said.

Gary Picha said the atmosphere of the band was different in his early years of membership. Many veterans were still involved and women weren’t allowed to join until 1982.

Picha said he played for seven years until work obligations forced him to step back.

He’s glad to be involved again.

“I enjoy the camaraderie of a lot of talented musicians,” Gary Picha said, “and it’s nice to play for an engaging, lively audience.

Most of our audiences tend to be that way.”

Get involved The American Legion Band is seeking new members. Musicians age 16 to 18 are welcome to play as nonmembers. Membership – nonmembers don’t have voting privileges – begins at age 18.

People do not have to be an American Legion member, or even a veteran, to join the band. Each year, the band performs three outdoor concerts at the Bicentennial Park Concert on the Hill series.

It also performs an annual holiday concert, “The Sounds of Christmas,” at the Rialto Square Theatre.

JOLIET – Gallery Seven, 116 N. Chicago St., in downtown Joliet is announcing a call for photographers to submit their images for “Open Lens VII.” Deadline is April 30.

This juried exhibit is open to any artist.

All photographs must be entirely the creations of the submitting artist and have not been submitted to previous Open Lens jurying.

Baker said he enjoys “Saturday Night Fever – The Musical” so much, he’s acted in it twice. The first time he played Tony’s friend, Double J, and was also the understudy for Tony.

Baker said he even met his wife, Dorothy, while doing the show.

current production, Baker said he told the casting director, “I want this.

I know I’m capable of doing it.” The casting director agreed. Baker received the part on – of all days – his Nov. 16 birthday.

For younger audiences or those unfamiliar with the show, Baker said Tony is a guy whose life, as well as the lives of the people around him, is going nowhere. Tony literally is trying

to “stay alive.” He spends his money on nice clothes so he can dance at the local disco on weekends.

But Tony, Baker said, is seeking something more than the cliched good time.

“He knows there’s something else out there,” Baker said. “He finds that through Stephanie. She helps him find his way.”

Baker said “Saturday Night Fever” will appeal to older teens and adults, especially those nostalgic for the 1970s.

The best part of the show, Baker said, is at the end, when the cast encourages the audience to sing and dance to a mix of the show’s musical numbers.

“That is our biggest payback, when everyone gets up on their feet,” Baker said. “As long as we see people singing and smiling, we know we’ve done our job correctly.”

He paused.

“We haven’t failed yet,” he said.

A double major in studio art and art history, Denler feels the human body is one of the most spectacular forms of art.

Some of Denler’s work focuses on the damaging psychological aspects that many people endure concerning their bodies, including their struggles to keep physically healthy.

JOLIET – Matthew Baker doesn’t portray Tony Manero exactly as John Travolta did.

But Baker said he will keep Travolta’s iconic walk at the beginning of the 1977 film “Saturday Night Fever” when he plays Tony in “Saturday Night Fever – The Musical” on Wednesday at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet.

“For the most part, that’s what’s wonderful about it,” Baker said of the musical. “For the audience that remembers the movie, it’s nice to keep a bit of the original taste.”

Fueled by the vintage Bee Gees hits, “Saturday Night Fever – The Musical” is a contemporary retelling of the classic story, according to a news release from the Rialto Square Theatre.

The production is directed by Jeffrey B. Moss with choreography by Denis Jones and musical direction by Skip Brevis.

It’s impossible to replicate the film onstage, said Baker, who has toured with “Saturday Night Fever – The Musical” since January – nor would he want to try.

“I’m the furthest thing from Brooklyn born,” Baker said. “I was born in the countryside of the UK.” In fact, Baker said the diverse cast is so creative, it’s continually adding new twists to keep performances

34 Heart benefits from moderate drinking Dear Dr. K: I’ve heard drinking red wine, or any alcoholic beverage, in moderation is “heart-healthy.” Is it true, and is red wine any healthier than other alcoholic beverages?

Dear Reader: There are many studies of the two questions you ask. As for the first question, most studies have found moderate drinkers are less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. That’s when moderate drinkers are compared either with non-drinkers or to heavy drinkers.

“Moderate drinkers” refers to men who have an average of one to two alcoholic drinks a day, and women who have an average of one drink a day. The difference between men and women is because women metabolize alcohol somewhat differently from men.

A study published in 2015 from Harvard Medical School and other institutions analyzed results from almost 15,000 people. The study lasted almost 25 years. No one had heart failure at the beginning of the study.

By the end of the study, however, some did.

But moderate drinkers were 20 percent less likely than non-drinkers or heavier drinkers to develop heart failure. This positive effect of moderate drinking was somewhat stronger in men than in women. The study looked primarily at heart failure, and not at other types of heart problems.

Now to your second question, about whether red wine is a more heart-healthy type of alcoholic drink than other alcoholic beverages. Here, I’d say the evidence is less clear. A study reported in late 2015 got a lot of attention in the media for showing red wine is heart-healthy. In fact, that study did not really compare red wine with all other types of alcoholic beverages.

The study involved more than 200 adults who were at high risk for heart disease because they had Type 2 diabetes. Partici-

After about two years, the red wine drinkers had higher HDL cholesterol (“good” cholesterol), lower ratios of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol and fewer markers of “metabolic syndrome” (a cluster of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes), compared with the mineral water drinkers.

Each of these changes has been linked to lower rates of heart disease. However, the study was too short to determine if heart disease rates actually were lowered.

Interestingly, the white wine drinkers had somewhat different beneficial effects.

Compared with the mineral water drinkers, the white wine drinkers had lower blood sugar levels, lower levels of triglyceride fats and less insulin resistance. Each of these changes, too, has been linked to lower rates of heart disease. But again, the study was too short to determine if heart disease rates were actually lowered.

To make a long story short, moderate drinkers have heart benefits, compared with non-drinkers or heavier drinkers.

Heavier drinking puts the heart (and other organs) at risk. It’s not clear red wine is superior to other alcoholic beverages.

husband, “Ed,” and I are in our 40s. We both work, and Ed often puts in more than 60 hours a week. My in-laws, in their 60s, are both in good health, retired and well-off financially. They expect weekly gatherings unless they have other plans.

My in-laws also insist on yearly family vacations. Because of this we have little time alone with our teens or each other. I don’t think all these gatherings should be mandatory. Please help. This is hurting our marriage.

How should South play in six spades after West leads the diamond three?

North’s four-club rebid was a splinter, showing spade support, at least game-going values and a singleton (or void) in clubs. When South control-bid his heart ace, North used Blackwood.

South made short work of going down. He won the first trick with his diamond 10 (the honor from the shorter side first), cashed his spade ace, and played a spade to dummy’s queen. When East discarded a diamond, South stopped in his tracks.

However, thinking was now too late; the contract could not be made. He tried to cash the diamond ace, but West ruffed and returned his last trump. Declarer had to lose a heart or a club at the end.

West’s lead was surely a singleton.

So, East had to be kept off lead. Also, in case there was a bad spade split, South should have played a club to dummy’s ace, then run the spade nine. West would have won and led a high club, but declarer could have ruffed with dummy’s spade queen, drawn trumps, and claimed four spades, one heart, five diamonds, one club and the club ruff.

NOTICE OF INTENTION OF COMMUNITY UNIT SCHOOL DISTRICT NUMBER 365-U WILL COUNTY, ILLINOIS TO ISSUE $25,000,000 WORKING CASH FUND BONDS PUBLIC NOTICE is hereby given that on the 18th day of April, 2016, the Board of Education (the “Board”) of Community Unit School District Number 365-U, Will County, Illinois (the “District”), adopted a resolution declaring its intention and determination to issue bonds in the aggregate amount of $25,000,000 for the purpose of increasing the Working Cash Fund of the District, and it is the intention of the Board to avail of the provisions of Article 20 of the School Code of the State of Illinois, and all laws amendatory thereof and supplementary thereto, and to issue said bonds for the purpose of increasing said Working Cash Fund. Said Working Cash Fund is to be maintained in accordance with the provisions of said Article and shall be used for the purpose of enabling the District to have in its treasury at all time sufficient money to meet demands thereon for expenditures for corporate purposes.

A petition may be filed with the Secretary of the Board (the “Secretary”) within thirty (30) days after the date of publication of this notice, signed by not less than 4,797 voters of the District, said number of voters being equal to ten percent (10%) of the registered voters of the District, requesting that the proposition to issue said bonds as authorized by the provisions of said Article 20 be submitted to the voters of the District. If such petition is filed with the Secretary within thirty (30) days after the date of publication of this notice, an election on the proposition to issue said bonds shall be held on the 8th day of November, 2016. The Circuit Court may declare that an emergency referendum should be held prior to said election date pursuant to the provisions of Section 2A-1.4 of the Election Code of the State of Illinois, as amended. If no such petition is filed within said thirty (30) day period, then the District shall thereafter be authorized to issue said bonds for the purpose hereinabove provided.
