Lincoln Highway Signs – Will County Less than one hundred years ago, there was no single road that stretched across the United States.

There were many wagon trails that existed out West and a network of roads and turnpikes in the East, but traveling between the coasts was a directional challenge.

Few people had even imagined that it could be possible to create a single cross-county route that could be traversed and named from East to West.

Even when the idea for the Lincoln Highway was envisioned in 1913, it was not a new road, just someone’s idea of roads and trails that could be connected together to link the coasts of the nation.

When Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson completed the first transcontinental crossing by automobile from San Francisco to New York in 1903, the United States was in the midst of the golden age of railroads.

Most people had yet to actually see an automobile or even drive one of these unique “horseless carriages.” Dr. Jackson, his mechanic Sewall K. Crocker, and a light-colored bulldog named Bud, spent 63 days on their historic trip, traveling over 4,000 miles.

Their journey took more than two months because the roads at the time were in poor condition, at best, in certain locations and nonexistent in others.

They had difficulty navigating because road maps and signs were practically nonexistent.

After the success of Dr. Jackson’s transcontinental trip and the publicity that followed his endeavor, the automobile and distant travel became part of the public consciousness.

Soon, other automobile adventurers set out on local and distant journeys, often testing ones endurance, navigation prowess and dexterity.

With the increasing popularity of automobile touring came the need for new navigation aids, as early adventurers were accustomed to common geographic

Organization eyes nonprofit status, provides needy children with food

LOCKPORT – Lana Howe and a group of volunteers are on a mission to provide area children who go to school hungry with “bags of hope.”

“Bags of Hope is a foundation, an organization, that means a lot to me personally. My dad [as a child] didn’t always have food. He sometimes didn’t know where his next meal was coming from,” said Howe, president and chairwoman of Bags of Hope, a recently formed Lockport-based organization eyeing nonprofit 501(c)(3) status from the federal government.

Howe and the group celebrated St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church’s donation of the group’s new headquarters at 324 E. 11th St. in Lockport with a ribbon cutting ceremony Saturday.

The Rev. Matthew Humm was in attendance, as was Lockport Alderwoman Joanne Bartelsen, Lockport Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lisa Kairis and chamber Secretary Ron Lif. The Bags of Hope program is designed to make sure students have food when they are not in school so on Monday morning, they are well-nourished, well-fed and ready to learn.

The house on 11th Street in Lockport will serve as a place to store food and pack bags as items are donated.

The day before the ribbon cutting ceremony, the group received a large donation from Freedom Elementary School in Plainfield, Howe said.

Boxes of macaroni and cheese, canned foods and cereal bars were stacked on tables Saturday waiting to be sorted into backpacks later in the week.

Bags of Hope board member Desiree Vernooji said it’s “chilling” to see how some students go hungry at schools.

“Some of us have seen really strange situations. If you see in school a kid with bare bones, really, you can count the ribs, that’s hard,” Vernooji said.

Each week on Wednesday, school kids from area districts are given backpacks filled with nonperishable items, such as canned soup, fruits and vegetables, macaroni and cheese, ramen noodles and other kid-friendly snacks.

“The kids are pretty excited to get the food,” Cariveau said.

Howe and many of the volunteers said they previously volunteered with the now-dissolved organization, Creekside Cares.

Howe said when that nonprofit dissolved in January, she and several others didn’t want to stop serving children in the community.

About 90 bags are distributed each week, but the goal is to build on that number, Howe said.

Schools served currently by Bags of Hope are Taft and Milne Grove schools in Lockport, as well as Crystal Lawns

and Lincoln elementary schools and Plainfield North High School in Plainfield School District 202.

The group relies on monetary and

food donations from the community, and school food drives. The next delivery to schools will be 10 a.m. Wednesday.

JJC to address mental 2 taken to hospitals after health issues, topics Preston Heights collision

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College will host sessions Friday to address misconceptions about mental health issues.

The Anti-Stigma Symposium will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at JJC in the J-Building at the main campus, 1215 Houbolt Road, Joliet.

The symposium will include sessions throughout the day that will focus on mental health topics such as domestic violence, addiction and music therapy, according to a JJC news release.

The event is aimed at students and meant to help address stereotypes and misinformation about mental health.

One speaker for the event is Garret Rapp, a member of the band The Color Morale from Rockford. He will give the last presentation of the event at 3 p.m.

Friday. Rapp is passionate about helping young people who struggle with depression, self-harm, suicide, sexual abuse and eating disorders, Victoria Goodman, one of the symposium organizers, said in the news release.

She said people should attend to learn about mental health issues.

“Those who come will leave with a

better understanding of mental health issues and what they can do to find help or provide support to others who are suffering,” Goodman, a JJC student, said in the news release.

The first breakout session at 9 a.m.

Friday will address stigmas, addiction, disabilities, domestic violence and self-injury behavior. One of the presenters will represent Guardian Angel Community Services.

The following session at 10 a.m. will be about mental illness and violence, mental health first aid, adolescent mental health, meditation and mindfulness, and support services for adolescents.

The third breakout session at 11 a.m. will cover stories of families affected by substance abuse, helping people, coping with stress, autism, police and stigma.

A community resource fair and lunch break will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a domestic violence demonstration called “A Walk In Her Shoes.”

The fourth and fifth breakout sessions will cover domestic violence, trauma, music therapy, interacting with people with hearing impairments, bad science in psychology, cultural respect and addiction. For information, visit shawurl.com/2j63 or jjc.edu.

aschier@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A collision early Sunday morning in Preston Heights ended with two drivers being transported to area hospitals.

The incident occurred about 5:45 a.m., when a car and an SUV crashed head-on at Route 53 and Zarley Boulevard, according to Joliet Fire Department Capt. Fred Offerman.

The driver of the car was extricated and airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Offerman said, while the driver of the SUV was brought to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

Neither driver’s injuries was considered life threatening.

Route 53 was closed from about 6 to 6:30 a.m. to allow for a helicopter to execute the airlift, according to Offerman.

Offerman said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Joliet spends $200,000 on Rialto two shows; annual stipend going fast

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city of Joliet will spend about $200,000 as expected on two recent shows at the Rialto Square Theatre, and the city’s annual stipend to the theater is being used up.

Joliet guaranteed performers fees for an April 7 show featuring Pauly Shore and other comedians and the April 8 appearance of Jeff Foxworthy.

City Manager Jim Hock said last week some calculations are still being done on the final costs, but they are not likely to amount to more than a few thousand dollars.

“You get back-end deals for these shows,” Hock said last week. “Sometimes, they even get beer sales.”

As of Friday, the city paid $164,178 for Jeff Foxworthy and $30,000 for the Pauly Shore show.

The city agreed to pay for the shows when promoters demanded guarantees on performers fees after hearing about financial issues at the Rialto. The money is coming out of the $600,000 annual

“There’s a little over $100,000 left,” he said. “I guaranteed the Vince Gill show. That will be about $80,000. They’ll be out of any more guarantees from the city.”

Rialto board Chairman Dan Vera could not be reached to comment Friday. But Rialto officials have said they discussed with promoters the possibility of guaranteeing performers’ money by putting ticket sales for shows in escrow.

The Rialto is not booking new shows now. Interim General Manager Jack Ericksen has said shows will be booked again once a new general manager has been hired – or sooner, depending on how long the hiring process takes.

The Rialto board approved April 6 a separation agreement with former General Manager Randy Green and is in the Shaw Media file photo process of replacing him.

An opportunity to clean up town People seem to be more conscientious about littering than they were, say, 10 years ago, but there’s still a lot of garbage blowing around streets and highways.

Many still don’t think twice about tossing a soda can, beer bottle or cigarette butt out a car window.

Garbage from our own trash cans or recycling bins can get blown around if it isn’t packed properly – too much sticking out from under the lid, lightweight recyclables on top, etc.

The biggest sources contributing to land litter are home trash cans, business trash collection areas, construction and demolition sites, uncovered trucks, motorists and pedestrians.

The Illinois Department of Transportation’s Adopt-A-Highway program volunteers pick up about 32,000 bags of litter along Illinois highways during the year, and in 2014 they collected 800 bags of trash from state highways during the April spring cleanup coinciding with Earth Day. April 30 will be Minooka’s spring cleanup day, and everyone is invited to come out and lend a hand picking up trash along the roads and in parks.

This is the eighth year for the village cleanup, said Laurie Musclow, director of recreation for Minooka. Volunteers spend about two hours cleaning up and

Here are just a few things to think of next time you are tempted to throw something from a car or can’t be bothered to pick up the wrapper that missed the garbage can.

through rain and water runoff and eventually ends up in water sources such as rivers, streams and lakes.

Think of how nasty the bottom of your trash can is, even with a plastic bag inside. That same stuff gets washed into storm sewers and blown around town.

Animals can choke or get strangled by garbage. Trash also can carry diseases and be passed between animals.

Cigarettes butts, which are tossed at random, contain arsenic and other toxic chemicals that can leach into soil and water.

LOCAL BRIEF Joliet Central High School dedicates a new peace pole

JOLIET – Joliet Central High School recently dedicated a new, handcrafted limestone peace pole, according to a Joliet Township High School District 204 news release. The peace pole is Central’s second constructed to promote a message of harmony and goodwill.

“The original wooden Peace Pole was planted in 2001 in conjunction with the Centennial Celebration but was recently taken down when the Student Center Galleria was built,” said Central teacher Patti Edwards, who served as the driving force behind obtaining the peace pole.

Peace poles are a long-standing practice begun in Japan by the World Peace Prayer Society, a nonprofit founded in 1955 by Masahisa Goi. The new peace pole was purchased through donations from parents, students, teachers, community members and organizations.

During the April 8 dedication, student volunteers held flags from around the world, speaking the words, “May peace prevail on Earth,” in Chinese, Polish, Serbian/Croatian, Italian, French, Spanish, German, Vietnamese, Lao, Greek, Hebrew, English and sign language.

Stephen even wrote a duet for horn and flute and songs for his grandchildren, Georgine said.

Although Stephen was serious about his music, Georgine said he was also a happy, smiling man who enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, reading and acquiring new knowledge for knowledge’s sake. He loved his family and loved spending time with them, she said.

Lawrence said Stephen was a good mentor – Stephen was even a member of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors – and a good friend.

“He was an example to others,” Lawrence said. “He modeled ethical conduct and kindness.”

Stephen’s rendition of the Panikhida was one of several contemporary liturgical arrangements he and his brother, the Rev. John Platko, former pastor of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Overland Park, Kansas, had planned to create together before John’s death.

“This is a very meaningful, complex and weighty piece of music,” Stephen said in a 2013 Herald-News story about the Panikhida. “I couldn’t have tackled this in my 20s or 30s, but now that I had the time to reflect on things, I believe I have the maturity to deal with the subject: The end of life as we know it and hope of something better in the life hereafter.”

Stephen’s wife, Georgine Platko of Plainfield, said Stephen had taken piano lessons in childhood and later switched to trombone, which became his primary instrument during his

years as a student at Northwestern University, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education.

Through the years, Stephen served as band director for Taft Elementary School in Lockport, Lockport West High School and Tinley Park High School. He retired in 1994 as district supervisor of fine arts at Bremen Township High School District 228 in Tinley Park.

He was the second director for the Tinley Park “Arts Alive!” community band.

“He was always composing and arranging. He did it for voice, he did it for band, he did it for string. He has written all forms of music,” Georgine said. “He also wrote little pieces of music called art songs.”

Some of Stephen’s pieces include “Prairie Winds,” “Echoes on the Hudson” and “Dances of Cana” for symphonic band; “Fallen Heroes” and “Elegiac Variations for String Orchestra” for orchestra; and “Waltz

Rauner, Madigan hamstring budget talks

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – The rivalry between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan continues to intensify during Illinois’ 10-month budget stalemate, leaving little hope that the state will have a spending plan any time soon.

Neither man has budged from their respective positions in a battle of attrition that has left Illinois as the only state in the country without a budget for the fiscal year that began July 1.

Rauner, a wealthy venture capitalist and first-time officeholder, promised voters he would shake up state government and wants a series of reforms aimed at curbing the power of unions and reducing costs for businesses.

Madigan, the face of the state Legislature since the 1980s, has maintained solid Democratic majorities by keeping his party’s allies happy, and that includes unions. He said Rauner’s ideas are destructive for the working class.

Tuesday marked the first time they were in the same room since December for negotiations, but the same day they publically maligned the other’s position. Rauner spoke to a group of busi-

Illinois comptroller: Pay for officeholders to be delayed

CHICAGO – Lawmakers from the governor on down will start waiting for their paychecks like others whose payments from the state have been delayed because of the prolonged budget impasse, Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger said Sunday.

At a news conference, Munger said it isn’t fair that members of the General Assembly and other statewide office holders – herself included – be paid on time each month when agencies, vendors and others are having to wait months for money they’re owed or are having to slash programs or shut down because of the lack of funding.

“It is only appropriate that we all wait in line to receive payment,” she said.

1959 time capsule found at ex-Illinois State dorm

NORMAL – A time capsule from 1959 has been found at a former Illinois State University residence hall that’s being taken down.

The box found at Hamilton-Whitten by a demolition foreman had roughly 50 items with ties to other former dorms, The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reported.

They include a 1959 yearbook, copies of revenue bonds used to finance Hamilton-Whitten’s construction, and an imitation cardinal. The copper box’s contents are “priceless in university history,” said university archivist April Anderson.

PEDERNALES, Ecuador – Aid began to flow Sunday to areas devastated by Ecuador’s strongest earthquake in decades and the death toll continued to rise as people left homeless hunkered down for another night outside in the dark. Officials said the quake killed at least 246 people and injured more than 2,500 along Ecuador’s coast. Vice President Jorge Glas said the toll was likely to rise because a large number of people remained unaccounted for, although he declined to say how many.

Much of the damage was reported in the cities of Manta, Portoviejo and Guayaquil, which are all several hundred miles from the epicenter of the quake that struck shortly after nightfall Saturday. But the loss of life seemed to be far worse in isolated, smaller towns close to the center of the earthquake.

In Pedernales, a town of 40,000 near the epicenter, soldiers put up a field hospital in a stadium where hundreds of people prepared to sleep outside for a second straight night. Downed power cables snaked across the streets with no prospect of electricity being restored soon, making it unsafe for many to return to their homes.

The town’s mayor said looting broke out Saturday night amid the chaos, but with the arrival of 14,000 police and soldiers to towns in the quake zone the situation appeared more under

control.

President Rafael Correa, who cut short a trip to Rome to oversee relief efforts, declared a national emergency and urged Ecuadoreans to stay strong.

“Everything can be rebuilt, but what can’t be rebuilt are human lives, and that’s the most painful,” he said in a telephone call to state TV before departing for Manta, where he arrived just before nightfall to be briefed by aides.

More than 3,000 packages of food and nearly 8,000 sleeping kits were being delivered Sunday. Ecuador’s ally, Venezuela, and neighboring Colombia, where the quake was also felt, organized airlifts of humanitarian aid. The European Union, Spain, Peru and Mexico also pledged aid.

Rescuers scrambled through ruins in the provincial capital Portoviejo, digging with their hands trying to find survivors.

“For God’s sake, help me find my family,” pleaded Manuel Quijije, 27, standing next to a wrecked building. He said his older brother, Junior, was trapped under a pile of twisted steel and concrete with two relatives.

“We managed to see his arms and legs.

They’re his, they’re buried, but the police kicked us out because they say there’s a risk the rest of the building will collapse,” Quijije said angrily as he looked on the ruins cordoned off by police. “We’re not afraid. We’re desperate.

Libyan smuggling route grows 1 year after mass drownings

When more than 800 people drowned last year on an overcrowded ship bound for Italy’s southernmost isle of Lampedusa, the European Union deployed a round-the-clock flotilla that has saved thousands of lives on what remains one of the world’s most perilous journeys.

But one year after Europe’s deadliest migrant disaster, humanitarian and security efforts off the lawless coast of Libya face a growing challenge to catch smugglers and bring asylum-seekers to safety. So far this year, 24,000 migrants have arrived in Italy via this route, and tens of thousands more are waiting in the pipeline, according to the International Organization for Migration.

Rescue officials seek to ensure no repeat of the night of April 18, 2015, when a boat packed with an estimated 850 mostly African passengers capsized as a civilian freighter approached. Most were locked below decks; only 28 survived. Several other smuggling vessels sank in the first months of 2015, some without a trace at a cost of untold lives, before EU naval reinforcements arrived that June to cast a safety net. Experts said that net is fragile.

Most of those 24,000 migrants were scooped up by Italian coast guard and EU vessels from recklessly overloaded vessels that were left drifting, engines dead, between Libya and Italy in a body of water dubbed the Lampedusa Triangle. Even if their amateur pilots had the requisite navigation skills, few vessels carry enough fuel to complete the estimated 185-mile crossing to Lampedusa from Libya.

office in Rome, said about 350 people have died so far this year trying to cross the southern Mediterranean route, nearly as many deaths over the same period as the far busier smuggling routes between Turkey and the eastern islands of Greece.

Now, as EU authorities work to halt that eastern Mediterranean flow of migrants and deport them from Greece back to Turkey, analysts anticipate that asylum-seekers from the Mideast and Asia may see Libya once again as the most temptingly open gateway to Europe.

They note that Libya’s paramilitary chaos may make the North African nation a particularly attractive launching point for Europe-bound migrants because EU authorities won’t deport migrants back to such a danger zone. Virtually all of this year’s arrivals from Libya have been Africans – but observers say that could be about to change.

EU nations are maintaining a fleet anchored primarily in Lampedusa that operates under the code name Operation Sophia. It includes Italy’s largest warship, the aircraft carrier Cavour, and is commanded by an Italian rear admiral, Enrico Credendino.

The fleet’s official mission is to confront smugglers and deter illegal immigration to Italy, but in practice the effort has become one of the 28-nation bloc’s biggest rescue missions in its history.

On Sunday, these two operations rescued more than 2,000 people from eight boats that had been spotted by a Luxembourg-provided surveillance plane.

A Norwegian vessel took 898 migrants to Sicily, including 224 children, while a German ship delivered 738 others to Lampedusa.

Back-to-back no-hitters highlight 2016 résumé of Plainfield Central’s Solebo Before last Thursday’s Southwest Prairie Conference baseball game against Plainfield Central, Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic discussed how Central’s stock is rising.

“That kid who pitched Tuesday was really good,” Petrovic said. “Where did he come from? I didn’t know anything about him.”

That kid is senior right-hander Sultan Solebo, who indeed has gone from an unknown to a pitcher who, so far this season, has been close to untouchable.

Solebo (3-0) has started four games.

He got a no-decision last Tuesday against Minooka, leaving with the

VIEWS Dick Goss score tied, 2-2, after seven innings. A call at first base the Wildcats disputed would have given them a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh and perhaps led to Solebo’s fourth victory.

Instead, Minooka won, 3-2, in nine innings, and went on to win the series, two games to one. Central earned its victory Thursday, scoring five runs in the top of the seventh for an 8-5 victory.

The SPC schedules three-game series Tuesdays through Thursdays.

The Tuesday games generally become matchups between staff aces. Solebo is in that role for the Wildcats.

All he has done so far is pitch 26 2/3 innings and allow six hits and 14 walks while striking out 34. His ERA is 0.00. The two unearned runs Minooka scored off him – on three hits – are the only runs he has allowed.

In an accomplishment you rarely see, Solebo basically threw back-to-back no-hitters. He pitched a seven-inning no-no against Morris, striking out seven and walking one, and followed that with

6 2/3 innings of no-hit ball against Romeoville, a game where he struck out 11 and walked six. Nick Pratt finished that combined no-hitter. If they don’t know much about Solebo yet, they will soon.

“The next two Tuesdays he will be going against (Plainfield South’s) Konnor Ash and (Plainfield East’s Drew) DeMumbrum, so it won’t get any easier,” Central pitching coach Pat Hanley said. “But I like to think other teams think the same thing about us, that they will be facing a very good pitcher and a good team.”

Continued from page 16 “I like pitching against good pitchers in our conference,” Solebo said. “It’s always a battle. I like being involved in a good pitchers’ duel.”

Junior right-hander Brandon Callender a Wildcats’ mainstay a year ago.

He suffered a setback early this season when he sprained an ankle in a game against Downers Grove North, which was Solebo’s first start and first victory.

But Callender is battling through it and is 2-1 with an ERA slightly over 2.00.

Solebo’s 2015 season admittedly was nothing like Callender’s.

“Last year I just didn’t do the job I was supposed to do,” Solebo said. “This year I took a brand new approach, and I am trusting that my teammates on the field have my back.”

Central catcher Matt Bunetta, who has played with Solebo “since we were 9 or 10,” said the big difference this spring is how well he is commanding his pitches.

“He’s been absolutely great,” Bunetta said. “I think our conference has really good pitching. But if people don’t realize yet how good Sultan is, they will soon.”

Solebo has similar strong feelings about Bunetta.

Central coach John Rosner cited Solebo’s command as the reason for his rise this spring.

“Sultan’s stuff was good last year, but now he is able to command his stuff,” Rosner said. “When you throw as hard as he does and can challenge

hitters, good things happen.”

Solebo describes his assortment of pitches as “a change that I throw as a splitter, a two-seam fastball, four-seam fastball and a 12-to-6 curve. The curve has been a good pitch for me. A lot of kids are swinging at it and missing it.

They see it and think it’s coming in

“It has become hard for high school teams to string together hits against him,” Hanley said. “So if he challenges guys in the zone, he has success.

A couple of times he has had a little trouble finding the zone. He was flying open in his delivery and missing high and away.

“But for the most part, he has been very good. The big difference this year is he came back to us a different person.

It’s night and day, last year to this. He did a lot of work in the offseason. His ability to locate his curve and change has been fantastic. To pitch the number of innings he has without giving up an earned run is amazing.”

In Solebo’s first start against Downers Grove North, he allowed three hits and one walk while striking out nine is six innings. Said Hanley: “We weren’t sure what we would see that day. It was like he flipped the switch, like he had gotten it figured out.”

If Solebo continues anywhere near the pace he has set so far, Central will compete in the SPC series opener on any given Tuesday. And with Callender also working in the series, the Wildcats potentially will be a season-long player in the deep SPC. “Brandon Callender was our ace last year, and I always trust him, too,” Solebo said. “Plainfield Central is looking good.”

BRAIDWOOD – Reed-Custer dropped a 6-4 decision to Yorkville before coming back to down Crete-Monee, 5-2, in a baseball triangular Saturday at Comet Park.

Against Yorkville, the Comets (93) allowed four unearned runs in the last two innings. Josh Loomis gave up two earned runs on nine hits, striking out one and walking none. Five Flyer volleyball players receive all-MIVA honors SUBMITTED REPORTS

ROMEOVILLE – The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association announced the 2016 All-MIVA award winners and No. 12 Lewis men’s volleyball earned five All-MIVA honors.

Freshman opposite hitter Mitch Perinar was named the 2016 MIVA Freshman of the Year, while senior middle hitter Bobby Walsh was selected to the All-MIVA First Team.

Perinar, senior setter Scott Fifer and junior middle hitter Jacob Schmiegelt made the All-MIVA Second Team and junior outside hitter Trevor Weiskircher earned All-MIVA Honorable Mention accolades.

“I’m excited for all five guys and the entire team,” Lewis head coach Dan Friend said. “All of them made significant contributions throughout the course of the season.”

Walsh earned two MIVA Defensive Player of the Week accolades this year.

He hit .469, third best in the nation. His 1.11 blocks per set ranks 11th in the country. He owns 541 career blocks, second most in Lewis history. This is his fourth All-MIVA selection. He was a First Team honoree last year and a Second Team selection as a freshman and sophomore.

Fifer dished out 975 assists (9.75 per frame). He ran an offense that hit .309 in MIVA matches, second best in the league. This is the second consecutive season Fifer has been named to the All-MIVA Second Team.

Perinar led the Flyers in kills per set at 3.03. He hit at a .319 clip. In MIVA matches, Perinar was even better. He ranked ninth in conference play with a .371 attack percentage while averaging 3.34 kills per frame. He is Lewis’ third MIVA Freshman of the Year since 2010.

Schmiegelt picks up his first career all-conference honor. He hit .439 with 1.65 kills per set while adding 1.02 blocks per frame. He helped the Flyers average 2.47 blocks per set in conference play, second best in the league.

Weiskircher hit .270 while averaging 2.40 kills per set. He also totaled 130 digs (1.46 per set) and 45 blocks (0.51 per set). This is Weiskircher first all-conference nod of his career.

Andrejszki earns GLVC tennis award

Lewis redshirt sophomore Dora Andrejszki was selected as last week’s Great Lakes Valley Conference’s Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.

Andrejszki who was undefeated last week, went a combined 6-0 to help the Flyers to their fifth-straight win.

For the season, Andrejszki has won her last 10 singles matches and owns a record of 17-6. Along with sophomore

Demchenko gets CCAC tennis honors

Two league wins earned St. Francis junior Gabriella Demchenko last week’s Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week honors.

Demchenko posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles after pairing with freshman Tanya Gonzalez for an 8-4 No. 2 doubles win against St. Ambrose. With the wins, Demchenko, who claimed her first career CCAC award, improved to 9-11 in singles and 10-8 in doubles.

Gass captures CCAC golf award

St. Francis senior Austin Gass used a medalist performance last week to gain Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week

honors.

Gass followed in the footsteps of his younger brother, Huston, who earned the honor earlier this spring.

Austin Gass shared medalist honors at the Olivet Nazarene Spring Invitational with a 3-over-par 75. A total of 75 golfers made up the field with the Saints capturing the title, their fifth of the year. Gass earned his first CCAC weekly award of the season and the second of his career.

Ludolph wins CCAC baseball honors

After posting two complete-game wins, St. Francis senior Charlie Ludolph was named last week’s Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week.

Ludolph had an eight-inning win in a 14-3 decision over Indiana-South Bend where he allowed seven hits and one earned run to go along with five

strikeouts. He recorded his first collegiate shutout after scattering four hits and two walks while striking out four in the Saints’ 2-0 win over Trinity Christian. In the two games, Ludolph, who won his first career CCAC weekly award, turned in a 0.60 ERA, while allowing only 11 hits over 15 innings.

Mead claims GLVC track award

Lewis sophomore Zoe Mead was named as last week’s Great Lakes Valley Conference’s Women’s Track Athlete of the Week. This is her first weekly GLVC award.

Mead helped the Flyers to a second-place finish at the Chicagoland Championships with a win in the 800-meter run. She had a NCAA Provisional and personal-best time of 2:11.70. That mark currently stands as the fastest in the conference and ninth-fastest in the country.

Arenado, Chatwood handle Cubs Moore Ks 10, Rays beat White Sox

CHICAGO – Tyler Chatwood really had something to talk about after his performance at Wrigley Field.

Chatwood kept showing progress in his return from a second Tommy John surgery, pitching seven sharp innings as the Colorado Rockies slowed the Cubs, 2-0, Sunday.

Nolan Arenado backed Chatwood (21) with two home runs.

Chatwood gave up two hits, struck out seven and walked one. He missed all of 2015 and most of 2014 because of his elbow injury.

“Got to be up there after the last two years, but the biggest thing is we were able to win a series against a really good team,” he said.

The Rockies took two of three for their first series win at Wrigley since 2011. The Cubs were trying to reach 10 wins in the first 12 games for the first time since 1969.

Chatwood, Miguel Castro and Jake McGee combined to hold the Cubs to three hits. Chicago had been averaging 6.45 runs per game, second in the majors.

“Chatwood was outstanding,” man-

ager Walt Weiss said. “To shut down that lineup, it’s quite a feat.”

The Cubs tried to come back in the ninth. Jason Heyward doubled with one out and Anthony Rizzo was hit by a pitch with two outs before McGee struck out Kris Bryant for his third save.

Chatwood threw 100 pitches in his third start since April 29, 2014.

Arenado hit a two-out homer into the left-field basket off Jon Lester (1-1) in the fourth and a two-out drive off Justin Grimm in the ninth. He has six home runs this season and seven career multihomer games.

“Today, I was really focused on staying back and staying on my back leg and it worked out,” he said.

The Rockies had four hits against Lester, who struck out 10 in 7 1/3 innings.

He also led off the sixth with a double – his first career extra-base hit – to make him 5 for 100 at the plate.

“At the end of the day, I didn’t execute one pitch and it ended up costing us,” Lester said.

Chatwood retired the first 14 hitters, striking out six, until Jorge Soler drew a two-out walk in the fifth. Javier Baez followed with a single for the Cubs’ first hit. David Ross grounded into a forceout to end the inning.

The Associated press ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Matt Moore is two years removed from Tommy John surgery and is looking again like a top-notch starter for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Moore struck out 10 over 6 1/3 innings, Brandon Guyer tied a career high with four hits and the Rays beat the White Sox, 3-2, on Sunday.

“Matt Moore was outstanding, to say the least,” Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said.

Moore (1-0) allowed two runs and five hits, and improved to 4-1 with a 1.45 ERA in five career starts against the White Sox. After Enny Romero worked a perfect inning, Alex Colome got the final five outs for the Rays’ first save this season.

Moore was limited to 14 starts the previous two seasons due to elbow surgery on in April 2014.

“I do feel strong right now, which is something that the last 24 months has not been a word I’ve been using lot,” Moore said. “I still feel like there’s a lot of things I’m working on.”

Moore struck out Todd Frazier and Jerry Sands, Chicago’s fourth- and fifth-

place hitters, three times apiece.

“We’ve been struggling, but I don’t know too many teams that would go up against Moore and do anything,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said “He was fantastic.”

Frazier struck out a career-high tying four times in four at-bats overall.

Jose Quintana (1-1) gave up three runs, seven hits and had six strikeouts in six innings for the White Sox, which have lost two straight after winning five in a row. The left-hander entered with a four-game winning streak dating to last season Rays’ second baseman Logan Forsythe (bruised left hip and lower leg) and center fielder Kevin Kiermaier (head bruise) were both back in the lineup after missing Saturday’s game.

Kiermaier ended an 0-for-19 slide with a double his first time up.

Forsythe hit a leadoff double in the third, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Guyer’s single. Guyer scored to make it 3-1 when Quintana was charged with an error after missing first base with his foot while covering the bag on Logan Morrison’s two-out grounder.

Avisail Garcia ended Moore’s day with an RBI single in the seventh that cut the Chicago deficit to 3-2.

CHICAGO – The St. Louis Blues kept pushing and pushing until a costly play

And there was nothing for the Blackhawks to challenge.

Jaden Schwartz scored at 13:32 of the third period with Kane in the penalty box for high-sticking, and the Blues beat the Blackhawks 3-2 on Sunday for a 2-1 lead in their first-round playoff series.

Patrik Berglund and rookie Colton Parayko also scored as St. Louis rallied after a difficult, 3-2, loss in Game 2 that included two key coach’s challenges that went against the Blues – one of them wiping out a tiebreaking goal for Vladimir Tarasenko.

Brian Elliott made 44 saves Sunday, keeping St. Louis in the game during the Blackhawks’ strong second period.

“No one said it was going to be a short series and even with them getting the win in Game 2, that didn’t affect us,” Schwartz said. “We came out and executed again today and we did a good job of that.”

It was Chicago’s first regulation loss

and St. Louis made the Blackhawks pay for the mistake.

“I’ve got to be smarter in that situation,” Kane said. “Obviously I can’t take a penalty at that time of the game, especially when the score’s 2-2. I take responsibility on that one.”

Tarasenko passed down low to David Backes, who sent it right to Schwartz in the slot. Schwartz then beat Corey Crawford low on the glove side for his third career playoff goal and a 3-2 lead.

The Blackhawks pulled Crawford for an extra attacker with 1:10 remaining, but Elliott and the Blues held on.

Game 4 is Tuesday night in Chicago.

“We’ve got home ice back again,” Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said. “To me, that’s the whole thing. We’ve got to find a way to keep it now.”

Brent Seabrook and Artem Anisimov scored for the Blackhawks, who dropped to 28-7 in home playoff games since the 2013 postseason. It was their first home playoff game since they hoisted the Stanley Cup at the United Center last June.

Anisimov’s fluttering shot past Elliott at 1:04 of the second put Chicago in front, and Crawford’s stellar play helped preserve the 2-1 lead for a while.

Edwards wins at Bristol Speedway

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Carl Edwards took his first celebratory back flip of the season and easily stuck the landing.

“I considered not doing it,” he said.

“I haven’t done one for a while.”

He earned that acrobatic moment because his No. 19 Toyota gripped Bristol Motor Speedway much better than his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Sunday.

Edwards avoided tire issues that plagued his teammates and took off on the final restart to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series on the half-mile bullring. In fact, he made it look easy.

Starting on the pole for the second straight week, Edwards’ Camry led eight times for 276 of 500 laps en route to his first victory since September at Darlington and fourth at Bristol. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was second, followed by Kurt Busch, Chase Elliott and Trevor Bayne.

“We didn’t have any trouble, and that’s just a testament to everyone at the shop and whole team,” said Edwards, who now trails new points leader Kevin Harvick (seventh) by a point.

Edwards’ flawless day contrasted the right-front tire problems endured by teammates Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin after all of them started in the top five.

Busch, the defending series champion and points leader coming in, had trouble throughout the race. He finally exited after his car smacked the wall on Lap 259 and sustained heavy damage, failing to finish a race for the first time since June at Michigan.

“I just kept getting tighter in the long run, not sure why that was,” said Busch, who had two other tire failures and was penalized for speeding off pit road. “I guess it wasn’t meant to be.”

Kenseth led three times for 142 laps and seemed to be one of the few drivers capable of challenging Edwards before his day ended early after he cut a right front tire a second time and hit the wall.

Hamlin had problems too, enough to cause Goodyear to announce it would examine all of those tires from Busch and Kenseth to determine if the failures were because of the tire makeup or the aggressive setups drivers use at the high-banked track.

Many possible causes of PTSD Dear Dr. K: Last year, a truck ran a red light, totaled my car and nearly totaled me. I spent several weeks in the hospital.

Since then, my body has healed, but I’m not myself. I’m very irritable, easily angered and sleeping poorly. A friend says I have PTSD, but I thought that occurred to people – soldiers, for instance – exposed to repeated threats.

Dear Reader: Your friend is astute.

Post-traumatic stress disorder – PTSD – is a condition in which distressing symptoms occur after a major trauma. While the media often talk about PTSD in soldiers who have seen active combat, you don’t have to be in battle to get PTSD. A single horrible event, such as a bad auto accident, surely can do it.

In a previous column about PTSD, I mentioned a patient of mine years ago who was in a terrible auto accident as a young man. The accident, which broke many bones and caused him to be hospitalized for many weeks, occurred at a particular intersection not far from his home where a drunk driver ran a red light.

For years afterward, every time he came near the intersection, his heart raced, he broke out in a sweat and he felt like he was going to die. Finally, he stopped driving anywhere near that intersection. But he still had bad dreams.

Fortunately, with treatment, his PTSD became much less of a problem.

About 10 years ago, though, just after he retired, the bad dreams came back.

His explanation: “When I no longer had to worry about work, I was free to worry about other things.” An aggressive schedule of church work, book clubs and travel helped beat back the PTSD. So, a single crisis (such as your serious car accident) or a series of events – as long as they are severe enough – can

When diagnosing PTSD, doctors often look for three things: • Hyperarousal. This is an ongoing state of tension that resembles a “fight or flight” response to danger. You may experience insomnia, angry outbursts, an exaggerated startle response and hypervigilance. Headaches, trembling, diarrhea and fatigue are common.

• Avoidance. You may feel detached or numb. You may be unable to talk about the traumatic event or revisit the place where it occurred. PTSD patients often withdraw from people and social events, particularly those even remotely associated with the trauma.

• Re-experiencing. This is the worst symptom. Suddenly, a memory of the traumatic event takes over your brain.

It’s hard to concentrate or function normally. Recurrent nightmares also are quite typical. In extreme cases, you mentally may relive the traumatic experience.

Talk to your doctor. Whether or not you have PTSD, you clearly need support to recover from your experience. If it is PTSD, psychological support, drug therapy or a combination should help.

DEAR ABBY My husband is extremely critiJeanne cal of others. He Phillips almost never has anything nice to say about anyone. He badmouths his co-workers, friends, family members and strangers. We don’t have friends anymore because he doesn’t want to be around them. I don’t understand his type of personality.

He thinks his way of thinking and doing things is the only right way and everyone else is wrong. He’s always quick to shift the blame when something goes awry. If he accidentally bumps into someone or breaks something, it’s never his fault – the person was in his way, or the broken object was junk, etc.

What makes people this way? Is there any hope that he can change? We are nearing retirement age, and I need my space. Change is possible in anyone, if the person recognizes the need for it and wants to change.

From your description, he must be a heavy load to carry, and I doubt he will admit the need.

If you want to continue this marriage and save your sanity after he retires, you must create separate time, hobbies and relationships for yourself apart from him, and be prepared in advance for the fact that he won’t like it one bit.

Dear Abby: Kudos to you for your advice to “Willing to Do It in West Virginia” (Dec. 10), who asked for advice regarding temporarily adopting her son “Kevin’s” dog while he was away on deployment, which her husband did not want to do. The husband felt Kevin getting the dog in the first place was a mistake and her son should “learn his lesson.” You advised they should temporarily take the dog, since there was no way of knowing what might happen during his deployment.

Giving the dog to a shelter would have a high probability of being a death sentence. That’s not humane when there are viable alternatives, and the situation is no fault of the dog’s. An alternative would be to contact Dogs on Deployment (dogsondeployment.org), a national nonprofit that provides an online network that connects service members with volunteers willing to board their pets during their service commitments.

Dogs on Deployment promotes responsible, lifelong pet ownership by advocating for military pet owner rights, providing educational resources and granting financial assistance for military pet owners during times of emergency.

For two weeks, we have been looking at the few bidding conventions I believe pairs should employ.

But it is no use bidding perfectly if you play imperfectly -- although if you are always in the best contract, you will be tough to beat.

In today’s deal, how should the play go in four spades? West leads the heart two. East takes the trick with his ace and leads the suit back.

West wins, cashes his diamond ace, and shifts to a club. What next?

South’s two-diamond rebid was New Minor Forcing, showing at least game-invitational strength and asking North to describe his hand further. When North indicated threecard spade support, South jumped to game in that suit. Note that in three no-trump, North should immediately lose four hearts and one diamond.

Not that four spades is a walk in the park, since declarer must handle the trump suit without loss. What is the right way to try to do that?

South should win in the dummy and lead the spade jack. He hopes that East holds the king and either defender has 10-doubleton. When East covers, declarer takes the trick and cashes the spade queen. Here, this works.

Notice that if South starts with a low spade from the board (a sensible alternative), East can put up his king!

Then South would surely win and lead a spade to dummy’s nine.
