JOLIET – The Illinois Department of Transportation plans to work on three more downtown bridges this year once the Jefferson Street project is done.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said city officials plan to talk with IDOT about ways to ease the effect of bridge closings throughout the year.

So far, turning Cass Street into a two-way street when other bridges are down does not appear to be an option.

The Jefferson Street bridge was closed last week for a paint job that is expected to last into June.

IDOT plans for the downtown bridges over the Des Plaines River include: • Closing the Cass Street bridge once Jefferson is done for painting scheduled for completion in the fall.

• Closing the Jackson Street bridge for an estimated two weeks once the Cass Street bridge is done for mechanical and electrical repairs.

• Lane closures on the Ruby Street bridge for a few days at some point later this year for

“We are going to meet with IDOT and have a global conversation about the bridges,” O’Dekirk said.

Just what can be done, however, is unclear. The bridges were built in the 1920s and regularly need repairs and maintenance. Replacement parts often must be custom-made, leading to long repair jobs.

Will County Children’s Advocacy Center earns re-accreditation from National Children’s Alliance SHAW MEDIA JOLIET – The Will County Children’s Advocacy Center has been awarded re-accreditation by National Children’s Alliance after an extensive application and site review process.

Accreditation is the highest level of membership awarded by National Children’s Alliance, which is the accrediting agency for Children’s Advocacy Centers across the country.

Accreditation denotes excellence in providing services for centers that respond to allegations of child abuse in ways that are effective and efficient and put the needs of child victims first, according to a news release from the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

creditation process every five years to ensure that best practices are continually applied.

Will County State’s Attorney James W. Glasgow established the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center as a nonprofit charitable organization in 1995 to improve investigations into cases involving the sexual abuse of children.

Children who make outcries of sexual abuse are brought to the center, where trained forensic interviewers obtain accurate statements in a neutral, non-suggestive, and child-friendly environment.

Interviews recorded at the Children’s Advocacy Center have been used in the successful prosecution of thousands of child predators.

“Temporarily switching Cass Street to two-way traffic is not an easy endeavor,” Urgo said. “The change in traffic patterns poses a grave safety concern for people that might turn the wrong way. Switching to two-way traffic requires modification of infrastructure, traffic signals and very intensive changes to signing and pavement markings.”

Banners and balloons coming down

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Banners, streamers and inflatable balloons have been less visible as of late on Larkin Avenue – signs that the city’s new zoning program for major corridors is having an impact.

Joliet in mid-February launched what the city called an “era of code a s s i s t a n c e , ” i n d i c a t i n g a b u s iness-friendly approach to gaining cooperation in compliance with city zoning codes along major commercial routes into town.

Kevin Gahr, the building inspector implementing the new era, said the reception has been good.

“Everybody has been very courteous or happy that we’re doing it,” Gahr said.

Everyone?

Everyone has been at least courteous, Gahr said.

The program is aimed at cleaning up major entryways into Joliet. Larkin Avenue was picked as the first street with the aim of improving the appearance of one of the routes out-oftowners use when going to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

Next, Gahr will be moving west from Larkin Avenue along Jefferson Street, visiting businesses there.

While everyone may be courteous, not everyone has been happy with the results.

Liberty Tax Service on South Larkin Avenue needed to take down its inflatable balloon, which cost $3,000 and has been placed on the roof for the past 10 years at tax time to draw customers.

“I’m a very seasonal business,” said Al Shalash, who owns the tax office and the Liberty Plaza where it is located. “How am I going to market seasonally?”

Shalash noted another tax office in Joliet has an inflatable on its roof for marketing. Gahr said he would address that.

City ordinances allow for inflatable balloons and temporary signs such as banners. But inflatables cannot be on the roof, and there are limits to how long temporary signs can be posted.

D-202 board reviews custodial services bids

PLAINFIELD – Plainfield School District 202 officials presented a breakdown of bids and costs for custodial services from three companies at Monday’s board meeting.

The presentation of the bids comes as the Board of Education considers potentially outsourcing the district’s custodial services, much to the dismay of the support staff union, the Plainfield Association of Support Staff.

PASS members were once again rallying against outsourcing as they’ve done since February. This time they were outside Freedom Elementary School before the board meeting.

District 202 officials received bids from ABM, Aramark and GCA Service

Group that they said in a news release met all district criteria and passed background checks and references.

Three bids to outsource custodial services “promise to reduce costs between about $908,000 to $9.9 million over the next three years, depending on the number of positions employed, pay rates and benefits,” according to a news release.

Under a three-year total cost analysis of six base bids from the three companies, GCA showed to mostly have the lowest cost, with the exception of base bid three from ABM. Aramark showed to have the most cost.

For base bid one – where the bidder provides the price it will charge if it hires 190 positions at current rates of pay – GCA has a cost of about $25.8 million, compared with the district’s

roughly $27.4 million, according to the cost analysis.

District 202 has 190 custodial positions that work either 4, 6, 6.5 or 8 hours daily, district officials said.

District officials said all bidders must offer employment to qualified current PASS members before the start of a contract, provide them with benefits comparable to what they currently receive and continue to require that all custodial staff pass stringent legal background checks.

A public hearing on the bids will be held April 25. District officials said the board could but is not required to vote on bids at the meeting.

Ann Bachman-McIntosh, IEA UniServ director, told the board during public comment she requested numerous times a complete copy of the

unsealed bids.

She said PASS needs the information to properly represent its members and prepare for bargaining. She said she received an email from an attorney stating the only information the union would receive is Monday’s presentation.

“We made it very clear that we need the actual bids to make our own assessment of cost comparisons,” she said.

Board member Rod Westfall addressed the apparent lack of trust between the board, administration and unions, saying in his 15 years as a board member the district has been “very transparent with our finances.”

He said problems with the district lies with declining state funding.

“We need to work together,” Westfall said.

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com MANTENO – About 300 people – nearly all of whom were farmers – packed into the Manteno Sportsmen’s Club on Monday night to speak out against a privately funded $8 billion rail line project that cuts through the region’s farmland.

Dozens upon dozens of pickup trucks lined the stretch of road leading up to Monday’s gathering, which marked the first of several public scoping meetings held by the U.S. Surface Transportation Board.

The FSTB is the the governmental agency responsible for approving or denying the project on its merits while examining potential environmental impacts.

Opponents onMonday night pushed back hard against the proposed Great Lakes Basin railroad project – which would run 278 miles, stretching from southern Wisconsin to Indiana in the C-shape and cutting through LaSalle, Grundy and Kankakee counties. The line would service up to 110 trains each day moving up to 70 miles per hour.

Project leaders say the rail line would expedite freight movement in the Chicago area. But opponents said the railroad would slice farmland in two, destroy drainage tiling, create dead-end rural roads and block critical surface water. Others said it would destroy wildlife within the Kankakee River State Park.

protection specialist with the STB’s Environmental Analysis Office, said the goal of the public scoping meetings is to hear from landowners so he and the office can gauge the environmental impact of the project.

Following the public comment period, the FSTB will draft a statement that includes environmental impacts, proposed alternative routes, and preliminary mitigation options.

“One thing I want to stress is that

this is just the first step in the process. We’ve been following the press reports, which notes that the Great Lakes Basin folks say they want to start construction in 18 months,” Navecky said. “Well, this is a long process and it’s probably a minimum of two or three years before we even complete the environmental review process.”

Robert Charter, of Essex Township in Kankakee County, said he is deeply concerned about project backers using eminent domain – or the right to take private land for public use.

“I do not want to see eminent domain allowed with this project,” Charter said as he was disrupted by a roomful of cheers and whistles. “Eminent domain destroys the landowners’ ability to negotiate. There is no negotiation after [eminent domain] is in place.”

3 crashes cause injuries, damage on I-55 in Channahon Township

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON TOWNSHIP – Three people were injured in one of three crashes, all of which occurred early Monday afternoon on the same stretch of Interstate 55 in Channahon Township.

The three separate incidents took place about 1 p.m. on southbound I-55 near Arsenal Road, Illinois State Police District 5 Sgt. Scott Angus said.

One semitrailer and three cars were involved in the crash in which injuries were suffered, Angus said.

Lockport Township Supervisor Ron Alberico said he doesn’t understand why the group is in such an uproar when the township is lowering its tax rate this year and not relying on a tax hike to pay for the new building’s purchase price or renovations.

“We showed them we could buy a cheaper building without raising taxes, to repurpose a building and redo this church. We listened. We heard the people and we listened to them,” Alberico said. “It boggles my mind that they’re still mad.”

As to why the township has yet to pay the $550,000 related to the lawsuit, Alberico said the court case is not yet settled.

He said the township has not conducted a space study, but the inefficiencies are “obvious.”

“You know what, I will admit that we didn’t hire a company that we need more space, but I think it’s common sense. With all our records, the assessor’s office is overcrowded, the clerk’s office is overcrowded. It’s obvious that we needed to do something,” Alberico said.

LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP – A group of residents is rallying against Lockport Township’s $1.1 million purchase of a 25,000-square-foot church to renovate into a new government building – and they’ve chosen Tuesday’s annual town hall meeting as the venue to air thoseconcerns.

The same group voted down officials’ attempt in 2015 to a build anew for a $6.6 million price tag.

Township officials have said they need more space to fulfill programming demands, including senior services. Currently, the township occupies about 8,000 square feet on a floor in the Central Square building in Lockport.

To accommodate the larger crowd, officials have moved Tuesday night’s meeting to a larger venue at Lockport Township High School’s East Campus Auditorium, 1333 E. Seventh St., Lockport.

District 210 foundation boosts donations with partner program

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The Lincoln-Way Foundation has donated close to $4 million to Lincoln-Way High School District 210, in part with the help of a program established almost a decade ago.

In 2007, the foundation launched the partner program as a new fundraising campaign, according to a district news release.

The program allows businesses, corporations and people to support the foundation with annual sponsorship ranging from $1,500 to $20,000. The funds go toward classroom needs and

scholarships.

“Each fall, we invite our partners into classrooms to observe students and teachers as they use the technology, tools and programs provided through the generosity of our partners,” Foundation Board Director Bob Chiszar said in the news release.

District officials said those invited to participate in the partner program primarily consist of small businesses either located in the Lincoln-Way area – covering New Lenox, Frankfort, Mokena, Manhattan and a small part of Tinley Park – or that have an affiliation to education.

Those who participate in the partner program can receive compli-

mentary advertisements in the foundation’s calendars, business links on the foundation website, complimentary gala dinner reservations, recognition plaques and an invitation to an annual recognition event.

Of the 32 original partners of 2007, almost half consistently donated, district officials said in the news release.

In the past five years, the partner program has seen an average annual increase of 9 percent in total gift donations.

“We’re incredibly proud of the foundation’s success thanks to the philanthropic spirit of our volunteer board, the support of our local community and the generosity of our partners,”

The city also has been posting new handicapped signs notifying motorists of the higher $500 fine for violations.

Most of the handicapped parking signs throughout the city are outdated.

Gahr said he has installed 185 signs posting the new fine in parking lots along Larkin Avenue.

He also has given 15 notices to businesses that do not have some kind of enclosure for their trash bins and 19 notices for those with large amounts of garbage on the property. One fast-food restaurant was notified that the garage on its site needs repairs.

Frank J. Argoudelis, age 86, of Joliet, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2016, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home from complications of a stroke he suffered in November, 2015.

Born June 14, 1929, in Joliet, he was the son of James Z. and Alexandria D. (nee Diakakis) Argoudelis. He attended Joliet Township High School and was a lifelong farmer in Plainfield Township. A 60-year member of the Plainfield Lodge #536, A. F. & A. M., a lifelong member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church and member of AHEPA and the Mykonos Society, and the Will County Farm Bureau.

Preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John Z. Argoudelis; and a sister that died at birth.

Survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Anna (nee Georgiadis) Argoudelis; three children, James F. Argoudelis, Alexandria A. (Paul) Harris and John F. (Maria) Argoudelis; five grandchildren, James P., Frank P. and Arianna A. Harris, Elena Anna and Alexandros N. Argoudelis.

BLOOMINGTON – When students at Cedar Ridge Elementary School want to see new items in the classroom, they turn to the student council.

Through fundraising efforts, the fourth- and fifth-graders on the student council have awarded $940 to the school this year to boy things such as a new bike rack, learning apps, tablets and books.

“Despite the fact we aren’t getting funding from the state, we’re still working hard to put fun and engaging things in the classrooms,” said Heather Rogers, Cedar Ridge teacher and co-sponsor of student council.

Students and teachers can submit requests for beneficial classroom items and the student council reviews the requests and votes for which ones to fund each month.

To pay for the items, the council members host fundraisers by selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts and Smencils, which are pencils scented like cotton candy, root beer and watermelon.

Another popular fundraiser is a photo booth hosted by the grandparents of council president Rylie Spencer.

“Giving these grants is fun because we can help other students and teachers and see classrooms evolve,” said Rylie, a Cedar Ridge fifth-grader.

Her fellow fifth-grader Ava Ryan is student council vice president.

“It’s kind of scary to talk in front of the whole school, but it feels great,”

Lawmakers frustrated by state budget impasse meet privately

By SOPHIA TAREEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Frustrated by a state budget impasse stretching into its 10th month, rank-and-file Illinois lawmakers are meeting in bipartisan groups to discuss potential solutions.

Some legislators spoke about their efforts Monday at a forum hosted by The Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, saying the goal is to present plans to legislative leaders in hopes of resolving the stalemate between Democrats who control the Legislature and Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner.

State Reps. William Davis, a Homewood Democrat, and Republican Robert Pritchard of Hinckley said they recently attended a lawmaker gathering in suburban Chicago to discuss tactics. Aside from noting revenue and reforms are in the mix, they declined to discuss specific proposals because they’re in the initial phases.

a budget deal for the fiscal year that began in July.

Democrats want Rauner to sign off on a tax increase, but Rauner first wants “structural reforms.” Democrats refuse, saying those plans – such as changes to collective bargaining – hurt working families.

Meanwhile, the state’s fiscal problems continue to grow, something none of the eight lawmakers participating in the forum disputed. Because

of court orders and other mandates, Illinois is spending without a budget at rates both sides say is unsustainable.

The state comptroller’s office has said the backlog of unpaid bills could reach $10 billion by the end of June.

Still lawmakers, due in Springfield on Tuesday, are convinced their efforts help.

At least five separate groups have been meeting to discuss the budget.

Four have sought guidance from the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, a progressive Chicago-based government accountability group, said executive director Ralph Martire.

Also state Sen. Heather Steans, a Chicago Democrat, said she’s part of a bipartisan and bicameral group that’s met “off and on” for some time.

“It will take rank-and-file folks coming together,” she said during the forum. “It’s a strategy that can be effective.”

Reynolds, who had been in South Africa with his 23-year-old daughter, appeared in federal court in Atlanta and was released, Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Fitzpatrick in Chicago said in an email.

Reynolds was arrested at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport when his flight arrived from Johannesburg, U.S. Marshals Service spokeswoman Belkis Cantor Sandoval said. He has pleaded not guilty on a misdemeanor charge of failing to file income tax returns from 2009 to 2012.

An arrest warrant was issued for Reynolds on March 31 when he told a judge he wouldn’t appear in court as ordered because he’s caring for a daughter whom he says has scoliosis and may also have cervical cancer. The Illinois Democrat had asked the judge “to show some compassion and understanding.”

“His case is scheduled for trial in Chicago on May 2, and we expect him to be here for it,” Fitzpatrick said after Reynolds was released.

When officers arrived, Coleman’s parents begged officers to take their adult son to a hospital for psychiatric treatment rather than a jail.

Poll: On range of issues, Clinton has edge over Trump

WASHINGTON – In an early general election warning for Donald Trump, Americans say they trust Democrat Hillary Clinton over the Republican businessman on a range of issues, including immigration, health care and nominating Supreme Court justices.

Even when asked which of the two candidates would be best at “making American great” – the central promise of Trump’s campaign – Americans are slightly more likely to side with Clinton, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll.

The survey does reveal some potential trouble spots for Clinton. Trump is nearly even with her on whom Americans trust to handle the economy, which voters consistently rank as one of the top issues facing the country. Clinton is trusted more on the economy by 38 percent of Americans,

while 35 percent side with Trump.

And despite Americans’ overall preference for Clinton on a host of issues, just 20 percent say she represents their own views very well on matters they care about, while 23 percent say somewhat well.

But as with most issues addressed in the AP-GfK poll, the numbers for Trump are even worse: Just 15 percent of Americans say he represents their views very well and 14 percent say somewhat well.

Trump’s support with registered Republican voters is also soft on some issues, with less than 50 percent saying they trust him over Clinton on working with Congress or handling the U.S. image abroad. About a quarter of Republicans say they trust neither candidate on either of those issues.

Those figures underscore the work the real estate mogul must do to shore up support within his own party if he’s the nominee.

Greg Freeman, an independent who leans Republican, said he would “absolutely not” trust Trump to handle major issues facing the United States.

“I think he would have the U.S. in wars at the drop of a hat. He would make the international community angry at the United States,” said Freeman, a 41-year-old from Walhalla, South Carolina. “He has a lot of comments on issues, but he has no solutions.”

While Clinton and Trump are the favorites to face off in the fall campaign, obstacles remain, particularly for the Republican billionaire. He’s leading in the delegate count, but needs to perform better in the upcoming final primaries in order to reach the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the nomination. If he fails to hit that number, the GOP contest will be decided at the party’s convention in July – and it’s unclear whether Trump’s slim campaign operation is prepared for that complex challenge.

New proposed spending plan doesn’t include ‘Turnaround agenda’ items ing to social services.

Still, the bill could very well generate some interest among rank and file Democrats worried about the implosion of the state’s social safety net as a possible next step in the negotiating process. For instance, the legislation appropriates more than $10 million for the Adult Redeploy program, which diverts nonviolent offenders from prison terms. That money would come from the General Revenue Fund, but the legislation also uses money from special state funds to pay for programs popular with Democrats that aren’t currently being funded by the state, like homeless youth services.

By far, however, the most intriguing aspect of the Republican bill is what’s not in it – at least not yet. None of Rauner’s usual anti-union “poison pills” are attached. The governor has demanded the passage of several reforms as a precondition to talking about the budget, but none of those are overtly attached to this new Republican proposal.

The GOP legislation also gives

the governor some spending transfer authority within the budget, but it appears to be much more limited than earlier demands for near dictatorial control over moving around just about every state dollar as he saw fit.

And while the GOP appropriations bill may not actually be fully funded by its pension component, it certainly has more funding behind it than either Democratic plan out there right now.

And still more funding could be found by using part of the Democrats’ proposal, which includes forgiving about $450 million in loans from special state funds (an idea that the governor had previously said he could probably live with).

The idea, it appears, is to present a far more “reasonable” GOP face than in the recent past – and put Madigan on defense both for hiding behind his incessant political games and for refusing to come to the bargaining table and allowing the state to crash and burn while waiting for the governor to cave.

An official close to Mayor Rahm Emanuel said last week that his boss and Rauner have regularly spoken with each other despite all the harsh public back and forth sniping between the two men. The governor, he said, claims that he wants to make a deal.

But Madigan just doesn’t believe that private talks with the governor

will work because they obviously haven’t borne fruit since this crisis began in late May of last year when the Democrats rammed through a hugely unbalanced budget which was then almost completely vetoed by Rauner.

Look, I totally get the lack of trust the Democrats have for this governor.

He has broken confidences, broken his word and attempted to break their, um, stones by hurling insults for months. I also fully appreciate the tension that has built up on both sides during the past 14 months or so.

But it’s not like anybody’s doing anything else while we all wait around for Armageddon Day. If private negotiations are off the table, then something else has to happen.

Private negotiations are obviously preferable to public negotiations, but private negotiations are off the table right now because Madigan says so (and he has his reasons, some better than others). And public negotiations are better than no negotiations at all.

And since public negotiations are what we’ve likely been seeing lately, we’ll have to take what we can get.

Hopefully, we’ll see a counteroffer from the Democrats soon.

He also mentions increasing taxes several times throughout his letter and makes it appear as though the purchase of the new building will call for a tax hike.

It is important for citizens to understand that not only is the township not raising taxes, but in fact lowering taxes while planning to increase services for residents.

The new building holds the possibility of hosting important community outreach programs as well as much-needed office space and record storage. It will present countless opportunities to serve our residents and increase the quality of life for everyone living in Lockport Township – all without raising taxes.

Mr. DeLaney asks those opposed to the new building to attend the annual town hall meeting tonight. It should be made clear that a vote on this issue will not be taken at this meeting. I would like to see a large number of citizens who understand the importance of this new building attend the meeting so their voices are heard as well.

Gov. Bruce Rauner has hit a brick wall attempting to convince House Speaker Michael Madigan to come to the negotiating table to talk about ending the long governmental impasse and then working out a budget deal.

So, after holding numerous public appearances to demand a sit-down, Rauner shifted gears last week when his two Republican legislative leaders trotted out a new spending plan to provide $1.3 billion to fund human services and other programs.

The proposal would partly be funded with some pension reforms which Republicans claim will save $780 million. The reforms include pushing off pension costs to local schools and to higher education institutions for salaries above $180,000 a year and for some accounting changes. But there are relatively few employees making over $180K a year, and the $780 million is about a third of the state’s annual “normal costs” for pensions, so it seems somewhat difficult to believe that these savings are actually as high as billed.

And even if the money is real, the $1.3 billion GOP proposal is significantly smaller than either appropriations bill passed by the majority parties. The Senate Democrats’ spending plan was pegged at about $3.8 billion, with half of that ($1.9 billion) go-

Knox’s heads-up base running helps Garrity, Plainfield North beat Minooka

dgoss@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Teams such as Plainfield South, Plainfield Central and Plainfield East have offered indication they will be heard from in the Southwest Prairie Conference baseball race.

However, you know Plainfield North and Minooka, the dominant forces for years, will not relinquish the elite spots without a fight.

The Tigers and Indians waged a classic pitchers’ duel Monday afternoon at Minooka, and the result came down to a heads-up base-running play

by North’s Brandon Knox, who scored

the decisive run in the top of the seventh inning to give the Tigers and lefthander Tyler Garrity a 3-2 victory and a 2-1 edge in the three-game series that opened SPC play.

Knox picked on the first pitch in the seventh inning from Minooka right-hander Brad VanAsdlen, who like Garrity went the distance, and drove it into left-center field for a single. Josh Garner executed the hit-andrun to perfection, singling through the vacated second-base position to put runners on first and third.

Josh Heckman then hit a one-hopper back to VanAsdlen, who looked at Knox and froze him before throwing to second for a force-out. But Knox

timed his break for home and beat the return throw with a head-first dive.

“We were going all the way, as long as the ball wasn’t hit back to the pitcher,” North coach John Darlington said. “He (Knox) got a good read on it and got in there. We also got a great at-bat from Garner the batter before that. He hit the ball down and hard to the right side, the way he’s supposed to.”

Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic credited Knox with making “a really brave play. Brad froze him, which was the right thing to do, but he just didn’t look him back to the base. If he had done that, we would have had to take the out at first and left the runners at

second and third.”

North (6-2, 2-1) finished with 10 hits off VanAsdlen, including three by catcher Jake Dunham, whose courtesy runner, Chase Jamison, scored twice. Garner and Connor Peplow chipped in two hits. Peplow doubled home the run that tied it 1-1 in the fourth inning and singled to set up Anthony Agne’s RBI groundout that evened it 2-2 in the sixth.

Minooka (4-6, 1-2) managed five hits off Garrity, one of which was Hayden Laczynski’s run-scoring single off the glove of diving shortstop Zach Jarosz in the fifth.

Plainfield Central gets past Romeoville to complete sweep

cherron@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Plainfield Central pitcher Cade Thornberry entered Monday’s Southwest Prairie Conference game at Romeoville with the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth inning, and the score tied at 2-2. Then he fell behind Jeff Zack by a 3-0 count.

While Zack did his best to get a hit, Thornberry grabbed the grounder headed up the middle and completed a 1-2-3 double play. Then the Spartans next batter, Danny Carreno, slapped a shot to right field, but Justin Willner made a diving catch to get the Wildcats out of the jam.

As so often happens, Willner came to the plate to start the next frame and proceeded to hit a double down the leftfield line. That kicked off a three-run inning and Thornberry set down each hitter he faced over the next two frames to wrap up Central’s 5-2 come-from-behind victory at Ernie Cimo Field.

“I really just wanted to throw strikes,” said Thornberry, who went three innings to collect the victory.

“After we got out of that, I was pumped.

I’m extremely happy with what I’ve seen so far from our team and I think

that we have potential. And I like that we’re all very close.”

In the Wildcats’ sixth, Willner beat a throw to third on a sacrifice bunt by Nathan Yusko and then scored the winning run on a passed ball. After Spartans starter Kyle Massaro struck out the next two hitters, Kyle Cockrell (2for-4) reached on an error to score the fourth run, and after Kyle MacFarlane was hit by a pitch, Matt Bunetta singled to left to make it a 5-2 game.

“Being in right field and looking into the sun, it was kind of hard to track the ball down,” Willner said. “I’ve been told by my coaches to come in on those balls because a little blooper like that could be the game. So I had to haul and dive in order to get that ball. I wanted to help out Cade by getting some runs in the next inning and I was looking for a pitch to drive and saw a fastball a little inside.

“I really like our bond, we’re extremely close. I feel like if we put in all of the effort since we’re friends, it will definitely be successful in the long run.

If somebody gets down, there’s another guy there to pick him back up. That’s what I really like about this team.”

Massaro, who tossed a five-hitter, pitched in the initial game of their se-

ries last week, so Wildcat coach John Rosner knew that completing the three-game sweep against the Spartans wouldn’t be easy.

“With the rainout on Friday, I knew that we’d end up seeing him again since we saw him last Tuesday,” Rosner said. “We were lucky to get one today and it was a good team win for all of us. We made some mistakes and weren’t perfect but we fought through that and ended up getting the victory, so I’m really happy with this win.

“If Cade throws a ball there, who knows how it ends up. Instead their four-hitter ends up smoking a ball right back to him and the 1-2-3 double play is the pitcher’s best friend with the bases loaded. Then Justin made a great catch and it was nice to come in and hit.”

The Wildcats (8-2, 3-0) moved in front in the first when Cockrell led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by MacFarlane. An inning later, the Spartans tied it when Julio Cajigas led off with a double and scored on a single

Romeoville grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third when Matt Bottcher (3-for-4) led off with a triple against Cockrell and then came home on a grounder by Zack. But Central tied it in the fourth

when Brandon Callender drew a walk and pinch runner Collin Hudetz was safe on a force try at second. After Willner reached on an error, Yusko walked with the bases loaded.

Despite seeing his squad come up a bit short in the series finale, Spartans coach Dave Haskins liked a lot of what he saw from his team, which didn’t score in the other two games.

“Baseball’s a funny game,” Haskins said. “Jeff hit the ball hard, but right at him and there’s nothing that you can do about that. Their guy made a great play to get the double play. This is a process and we’re working on little things and I thought that we played well. We made a couple of mental mistakes, but beside that, it was a good, competitive game.

“Things can fall in different ways, but I like to see our kids working hard and putting the ball in play and making things happen. We scored twice and had other guys in scoring position.

And Kyle has a great work ethic and a bulldog mentality, so nothing really affects him. I like our kids and their mental toughness and passion for the game. Even though we’re not getting the final results that we want to, I don’t see anyone hanging their heads.”

If Garrity made any mistake, he said it was his failure to lend his teammate a hand. He was the next batter when Knox made his seventh-inning dash for the plate.

“I got caught in dead-man’s land,” he said. “I should have gotten the bat out of his (Knox’s) way and I didn’t.”

Garrity struck out eight and walked two. Minooka hitters had several long at-bats against him. One came in the fifth. The Indians already had scored the go-ahead run and had the bases loaded with two outs. Jon Butler hit a half-dozen foul balls, and on the 10th pitch, Garrity struck him out swinging.

“That was a big at-bat,” Garrity said.

“It’s always a big series and a tough battle when we play these guys. It doesn’t matter when it falls on the schedule.”

“All our guys pitched well in the series and the other kid (VanAsdlen) pitched well, too,” Darlington said.

“The strikeout (of Butler) was big, and so was the double-play ball to center field.”

“The first game of the series was not that good, but these last two games were typical of what you see from our programs,” Petrovic said. “Brad (Van

Asdlen) really had a nice game and we did a good job getting out of jams.

“Even in a loss, we had a lot of positives to come from this. They’re a good team, and we avoided the big inning that had been hurting us. We’re young, we’re learning and we saw a spark tonight that we had not seen for a while.”

It seems appropriate to say Lewis University’s men’s volleyball team experienced the ultimate weekend after closing out the regular season with a pair of conference wins.

On Saturday, the No. 13 Flyers honored seniors Scott Fifer, Bobby Walsh, Patrick Lilly and Will McCall with a 3-0 victory over IPFW. A day earlier, Lewis won 3-0 over No. 8 Ball State.

Friday’s victory was especially important because it gave coach Dan Friend’s 17-12 Flyers a major boost as they begin play in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association tournament against Grand Canyon at 7 p.m. Friday at Neil Carey Arena.

One of the most interesting stories of Friday’s match was that so many Chicago-area players were involved, a total of 18 from both squads. But what’s even more unusual is that 11 of the competitors were members of the same club before starting their college careers.

Ultimate Volleyball Club, the successful organization that’s located in Frankfort and is under the direction of Erin Lorenz, was the home base for many of the talented athletes who suited up for the Flyers and Cardinals in the clash of the two nationally ranked squads.

It’s unusual to see that many alumni of the same club ever meeting up in any contest, let alone to see eight of those players contribute statistically in such a match.

At one point, Fifer was joined on the court by teammate John Hodul and Ball State’s Mike Scannell, who all played together at Sandburg. And at other times, Walsh looked across the net to see his brother Matt. Minooka graduate Mitch Perinar, another Ultimate alumni, also had a big hand in the Flyers’ win, tying for a match-high 10 kills.

The only down side to the reunion was Ball State’s Brendan Surane, another Ultimate product who had 10 kills, suffering an injury in the second set. The Lockport native and Providence graduate recently was honored as the MIVA’s Offensive Player of the Week.

“There were a lot of Ultimate Volleyball guys on both teams,” Fifer said.

“It was great since it makes the battle even more intense. There was a little trash talk before the game and we were texting each other.”

“This is like a continuing rivalry for me since we all played together during the club season, but I also liked competing against them in high school,”

Now the fourth-seeded Flyers will focus on trying to make a run at a fifthstraight appearance in the MIVA title match and capture their first champi-

onship in the event since 2012, when they won at Ohio State in the finals.

First they need to beat Grand Canyon, which they split with on Jan. 29 and 30. Then they would have to win at top-seed Ohio State, which they’ve lost to 3-0 and 3-1.

The other semifinal figures to feature second-seed Loyola, which Lewis lost a pair of 3-2 decisions to, and thirdseed Ball State, which the Flyers fell to 3-2 in the earlier meeting.

Despite the fact they’re 1-5 against the other top three seeds and only one school has won the title that wasn’t a top-two seed since 1999 (Lewis won as a fifth-seed in 2004), the Flyers feel if they can play their game, that anything’s possible in the competition.

“If you look at our games against all of those ranked teams, we were right there,” Fifer said. “We lost grind-out battles to them and weren’t playing our game completely. So, hopefully, we can make a run in the playoffs.”

“Right now everyone is playing well, and, hopefully, we can continue this in the postseason,” Perinar said. “We were in there twice with Loyola, and we’ve played well against Ball State.

We took Ohio State to four sets last time and played a lot better. If we win Friday, having the experience of playing well in that second game in their gym is really going to help us.”

Augello wins U.S. Olympic Team Trials SUBMITTED REPORTS IOWA CITY, Iowa – Haley Augello, a 2013 Lockport graduate, won the 48 kg/105.5-pound title at last weekend’s U.S. Olympic Team Trials for senior women’s freestyle wrestlers.

Augello won two of three matches against Victoria Anthony, a two-time junior world champion, in the finals after beating a world bronze medalist in the semifinals.

The Olympics qualifying process is ongoing as she competes again in Mongolia in two weeks and perhaps in Turkey in early May.

MINNEAPOLIS – Jose Quintana leads the major leagues with a whopping 53 no-decisions since his career began with the White Sox in 2012.

With an enhanced offense behind him, maybe the trend will end this season.

Austin Jackson hit a two-run, twoout single in the fourth inning after just missing a grand slam, lifting Quintana and the Sox to a 4-1 victory Monday that spoiled Minnesota’s home opener and stuck the winless Twins with their seventh straight loss.

Quintana (1-0) pitched six smooth innings with one run allowed for the Sox, who have won five of their first seven games.

“I feel this is the year for no more no-decisions,” said Quintana, whose start was pushed back one day by the rainout Sunday in Chicago. “When you come into the ballpark every day, you come in excited for it because you have a new team, a real team, and we’ve got a chance.”

Todd Frazier, the most prominent of the offseason acquisitions, sparked a second-inning rally with a leadoff

single and later added an RBI double.

That proved to be plenty for Quintana, who has mastered the art of consistency even if his career record is a mere 34-34.

“He is just as solid as it gets,” manager Robin Ventura said.

Twins starter Kyle Gibson (0-2) was charged with only one earned run over 51/3 innings, but he was in trouble often and threw a wild pitch that set up Frazier to score on a single by Brett Lawrie.

The Twins, off to the worst start for the franchise since the Washington Senators went 0-13 in 1904, were 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position and are a majors-worst 5 for 55 in those situations this season.

Jackson has a hit or a run in every game. His drive down the left-field line missed a grand slam by a few inches, squeezing between the limestone wall and the foul pole in the fourth. He put the Sox up 3-0 with his smash up the middle on the next pitch.

“This is a great group of guys right here. Everybody’s working toward a similar goal, and I was fortunate that I was able to come in and fit right in,” Jackson said.

Butler scores 23 as Bulls beat Pelicans

The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW ORLEANS – Jimmy Butler scored 12 of his 23 points in the last six minutes and the short-handed Bulls beat the injury-riddled New Orleans Pelicans, 121-116, on Monday night.

Nikola Mirotic added 20 points and Cristiano Felicio matched his career high with 16 for the Bulls. Butler was the only regular in the starting lineup.

Derrick Rose and Pau Gasol sat after the Bulls were eliminated from the playoffs when Indiana won Sunday.

James Ennis had a career-high 29 points for the Pelicans, who have been

without all five of their leading scorers for two weeks. Toney Douglas contributed 21 points, and Tim Frazier had 20 points and 11 assists.

With the score tied at 106, Butler took over down the stretch.

He converted a layup, hit a contested 3 as the shot clock was winding down, made two free throws and sank a stepback jumper from the corner as the Bulls pulled away. Butler also had 11 assists.

Trailing 96-93 early in the fourth quarter, the Bulls scored 11 straight to go up by 8. Aaron Brooks hit a 3, Bobby Portis sank a tough bank shot, Mirotic had a basket, Portis made two free throws and Mirotic fed Doug McDermott for a layup.

Teddy bears made with clothing from deceased help with bereavement

JOLIET – When a loved one dies, processing the grief can be painful and long-lasting.

But Joliet Area Community Hospice has a way to soften the sting.

At the request of grieving family members, a team of 20 hospice volunteers will use their cutting, sewing and design skills to make soft, huggable teddy bears out of material from items of clothing worn by the deceased.

The bears help keep the memory of the loved one close.

“Sometimes that’s what they need to heal,” said Julie Blackburn, JACH bereavement counselor. “We cannot hug our loved ones anymore, but we can hug them through the bears.”

Joliet Area Community Hospice were set to honor both the Memorial Care BEAR volunteers and the Joliet Fire Department on Monday night at its “Champions of Hospice” annual dinner meeting.

How the bears help

Blackburn said some clients want her present when they receive their bears. She’ll coordinate the counseling sessions with the reception so clients can process their feelings with her.

Clients might cry for an hour or share memories they associate with the particular shirt, skirt or pajamas, Blackburn said.

“It’s very emotional,” she said.

“You’re seeing your loved one’s clothing in a three-dimensional form again ... and feeling that fabric again.”

Everyone works through grief differently, Blackburn said, and not everyone wants a bear made of a loved one’s clothes. Others need that connection.

“It’s not a bad thing to feel,” Blackburn said. “It can be part of that healing process.”

Blackburn said some clients keep the bears on their beds and hug them each night before retiring. One woman placed the bear sewn with her husband’s shirt in his favorite chair, which was much better than seeing that empty chair, she told Blackburn.

Easing emotional turmoil can help a grieving person with bereavement, Blackburn said.

“That energy can be put back into the things we enjoy in life,” Blackburn said. “Those bears really help that whole process. It’s a lasting memory.”

Beth Zimmerman, of Joliet and a patient care clerk at JACH, ordered several bears. One wears a maroon corduroy button-down shirt her father, Robert Kozik, often wore. Kozik died in 2005.

Then a little over a year ago, Zimmerman lost her grandmother, Catherine Heap. Zimmerman had bears stitched from one of her grandmother’s skirts for her three sisters, her mother and herself.

“She always wore skirts,” Zimmerman said of her grandmother. “I have purchased a lot of bears. You want something to remember them by. ...

They make me feel like they’re still here.”

Jean Eicholzer and Kathy McCune, both of Joliet, and Sandy Richards, of Channahon, are volunteers in JACH’s memorial care bear ministry. The three

work on the second half of the projects with donated material.

“We stuff them and decorate them,” Eicholzer said. “We put on the eyes, nose, buttons, ribbons. ... Each have their own little personalities.”

McCune said her oldest son had cancer and went through chemotherapy.

When she heard the care bear ministry needed volunteers, McCune felt it would be a good fit.

“I’ve been sewing pretty much all my life,” she said, “so that interested me.”

Loved ones, McCune said, bring in all kinds of material for the bears: robes, sports apparel, jackets, night-

gowns, blouses, shirts with business logos, clothing with Harley-Davidson emblems and even wedding dresses.

McCune said one friend cuddles her bear when she’s having a bad day.

“It makes the grief a little better,” McCune said.

Richards said she used the JACH bereavement counseling program when her husband died.

“Then I decided I wanted to give back,” Richards said. “I truly hope that we are helping people who are going through the death of a spouse or other loved one.”

Eicholzer mentioned an added benefit of the memorial care bear program – friendships she’s made with the other volunteers.

Jacquelyn Bersano, JACH senior director of development, said volunteers make hundreds of bears each year, which hospice appreciates. They are organized by Volunteer Director Jeri Smith, who Bersano said does a wonderful job of recruiting, training and following up.

“We have more than 290 volunteers total,” Bersano said. “They do many, many different things for us.”

Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center announces ‘Physician of the Year’ 25 JOLIET – Surgeon Dr. Brian Winkleman was honored by Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center as the 2015 “Physician of the Year” last Thursday at the annual Physician Recognition Night.

Winkleman joined Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center as a general surgeon in 2009. He is board certified in general surgery and specializes in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery.

He is a graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his residency in general surgery at The Ohio State University Medical Center. He also completed a fellowship in minimally invasive, robotic and

bariatric surgery.

March of Dimes to hold annual fundraising walk on April 24 SUBMITTED REPORTS PLAINFIELD – The March of Dimes will hold its annual fundraising walk April 24 at the Village Green Park in Plainfield. Registration is at 11:30 a.m. and the 5K walk starts at 1 p.m.

The 2016 Ambassador Family is Beth and Johnny Russler. After several rounds of fertility treatments, the Russlers were blessed with the news of a baby girl. At 36.5 weeks, Beth’s water broke and – due to an umbilical cord kink – baby Reese was stillborn.

The Russlers went again for fertility treatments and learned they were expecting triplets. At 21 weeks, Beth went into labor. Another baby girl, Roxanne, was delivered and had died.

Beth was then placed on bed rest at Rush Hospital for 40 more days until, at 26 weeks, Johnny Jr. (JJ) and Lucille (Lucy) were born. They weighed just over 2 pounds. JJ stayed in the NICU for three months and Lucy for four months. Thanks to the March of Dimes and the money raised for research, both JJ and Lucy are home and thriving.

According to the American Optometry Association, 3-D movies can help identify vision problems because 3-D technology requires eyes to process information in a different way.

The recent association “3-D in the Classroom” report concludes that about one in four kids might have vision problems that can be detected with 3-D viewing. After watching a 3-D movie, look for these “3-D” signs. If

present, contact an eye doctor.

• Discomfort – Eye strain can occur when eyes have trouble working together as a team over long periods of time.

• Dizziness – Similar to the queasiness of car sickness, this issue is caused by poor eye alignment.

• Depth – The inability to appreciate 3-D vision means the experience may be less vivid.

Immune response can lead to sepsis Dear Dr. K: My father had routine surgery. Soon after, he developed something called sepsis that almost killed him. He’s OK now, but I’d like to understand what happened to him.

Dear Reader: He and you are lucky. Not everyone makes it. Sepsis is a condition in which the immune system goes awry.

Think of the immune system as our personal army, with an arsenal of weapons. It is meant to protect us from foreign invaders (such as germs). Unfortunately, in attacking foreign germs, it sometimes can go overboard – and its weapons can injure us.

The condition that often triggers sepsis is a bacterial infection. Other causes can lead to sepsis, including autoimmune diseases, surgery and severe burns. In all of these cases, the immune system is being called to help us heal from some injury. However, when the immune response is both too vigorous and too prolonged, healthy tissues can be damaged.

Sepsis is treated with antibiotics; the idea is to kill the bacteria that have triggered the attack by the immune system.

Drugs that increase blood pressure also may be given since sepsis often results in low blood pressure. A person also might need supplemental oxygen and intravenous fluids, depending on his or her symptoms.

Sepsis is fairly common. There are between 1 million and 2 million cases every year in the United States. A decade ago, I was one of those cases. I had many of the main features of sepsis. Fairly suddenly, I felt completely exhausted and had a very high fever. I developed a rapid heart rate, rapid breathing, low blood pressure, pale and mottled skin, very high numbers of white blood cells, very high blood markers of inflammation and somewhat low

I don’t think I had an alteration in my mental state, as some people with sepsis do. Then again, a person with an altered mental state isn’t the best judge of whether he has an altered mental state.

I was pretty sick for a few days, but I recovered fully. I was lucky. If sepsis is not promptly recognized and treated, it can cause the lungs, kidneys, liver, heart and brain to fail.

Certain people appear to be at increased risk for sepsis. They include people older than age 65, people with diabetes, people with cancer and people who are taking drugs that suppress the immune system.

Two common bacterial infections that can cause sepsis, particularly in older people, are pneumonia and urinary tract infection. I urge my older patients to call me promptly if they develop an unusual cough or breathlessness (possible symptoms of pneumonia) or painful and frequent urination (possible symptoms of urinary infection).

It was a weird experience to be a doctor, to have a sudden medical emergency and to know exactly what was happening.

Fortunately, I was at the hospital when I got sick and got prompt treatment. I’ll never know for sure, but I think it saved my life.

Recently, a guy I’ve known for more than a year decided it would be best for us to part ways. Before Christmas, I had asked what he would like for Christmas. His response was, “I don’t want anything for Christmas – I want you.”

The splinter bid was invented independently by two Americans, Dorothy Hayden (who became Dorothy Truscott in 1972) and Dave Leigh Cliff. It shows a big fit for partner’s last-bid suit, at least game-forcing values and a singleton (or void) in the suit just named -- North’s four-club response in today’s deal.

South, with a strong hand, uses Blackwood before stopping in six hearts when he learns that a key king is missing.

After West leads the spade queen, how should South play?

Considering the trump suit in isolation, the percentage play for no losers -- by about two percent -- is to cash the ace. But that is the wrong play here. Declarer should take both of his spade tricks, cash the club ace, and ruff the club six in the dummy.

Then he runs the heart queen (unless East shows out or covers with the king, of course). Here, the finesse wins and South is playing for an overtrick. But suppose West takes the trick with a singleton heart king. He is endplayed, forced either to lead into declarer’s diamond tenace or to concede a ruff-and-sluff. Whichever he chooses, South loses no diamond trick.
