Lateral Canal – Ottawa In Ottawa, an important feeder channel for the Illinois and Michigan Canal was located north of the main canal.

The canal was approximately 4.7 miles long and nearly fifty-feet wide through the town, and many mills and grain elevators were located along its route.

The location where the feeder joined the main canal, known as the Lateral Canal, ran south through town and emptied into the Hydraulic Basin. The basin moved the water east for several blocks then through a narrow mill race before spilling into the Fox River.

This canal was used to regulate water levels in the I&M Canal in addition to providing hydraulic power by many businesses along its short route. The Lateral Canal, sometimes referred to as the “sidecut,” was supplied with water by the Fox River feeder canal located north of the Fox River Dam in Dayton.

The Lateral Canal cut through the I&M Canal towpath north of Superior Street, dropped elevation through a limestone lock, and ran south along the east side of Canal Street where it entered the Hydraulic Basin. The basin was oriented east-west along the south side of Mill Street and flowed east to LaSalle Street where it narrowed into a raceway, which controlled the water as it flowed into the Fox River.

In 1931, teams of unemployed men from the area began to dismantle the Lateral Canal in 1931, its Superior Street Lock, and fill in sections from the Main Canal near Superior Street south to Main Street. In short order, the Hydraulic Basin was also filled in between LaSalle and Clinton Streets and Mill Street; between LaSalle and Columbus Streets, it was widened and paved over.

Although nothing remains of the original feeder canal, there is still some evidence of the original route on the topography of the area.

Potential homeowners gain insights at Joliet Housing Expo

JOLIET – Dwana Williams walked away from Saturday’s Joliet Housing Expo more confident about her homebuying prospects.

The single mother is renting right now, but eventually wants to buy a home.

“It’s an investment. It’s a plan for the future, for my children,” said Williams, 41, of Joliet.

The expo, held Saturday at Joliet West High School, included 31 exhibitors and vendors offering advice on buying homes along with neighborhood tours and visits to five homes for sale. Representatives from realty offices and banks, as well as housing counselors, gave presentations and were available to answer questions.

Just shy of handing off the keys to a new home to attendees, the Joliet Housing Expo served as a one-stop shop for home hunters – with realtors and other vendors offering advice about mortgages, credit counseling and first-time buying opportunities.

Those who attended Saturday’s event were in various stages of the home-buying process, said Karen Robertson, with Spring Realty and a member of the Three Rivers Association of REALTORS, one of the sponsors of the event.

“Some are looking [for a home] right now, some are still a year out,” Robertson said. “Some need help with credit repair, credit rebuilding. Some are boomerang buyers. ... Those are people who have lost their homes [to foreclosure] and are back in the market for a new one.”

Families who have rented for years should note that it’s significantly less expensive to own and invest in a home, Robertson said.

“It’s all about educating people about the home-buying process,” Robertson said.

Also featured at the event was the city of Joliet’s Down Payment Assistance Program, which provides help buying a home in the city.

The Down Payment Assistance Program provides assistant to low- to moderate-income buyers acquiring homes within the Joliet city limits. To qualify, buyers must occupy the home as their principal residence. The city of Joliet – in cooperation with the Will County Center for Community

Concerns – has committed more than $650,000 to fund the program.

Carmen Carter, owner of Carter Realty in Joliet, said she “knows the ins and outs” of the offerings within Will County’s grant program. Families can choose from a variety of assistance options, including the Foreclosure Stabilization Program, which gives buyers financial assistance and the promise to bring the foreclosed home up to safety and code standards before move-in.

Another financial assistance option is the Illinois Housing Development Authority’s $7,500 down payment assistant grant for first-time homebuyers.

After speaking with realtors and local lenders, Williams learned she needs to rebuild her credit score.

“They said start out small, get a secure credit card and start building up my credit,” she said.

“It gave me hope that it’s a possibility, that there are people out there willing

and able to help.”

Bus tours were available immediately following the expo. Attendees could go into neighborhoods to give visitors a better sense of the city. The

tours also visited five houses for sale.

Other sponsors of the expo were the city of Joliet, the Will County Center for Community Concerns, Standard Bank and First Midwest Bank.

JJC, staff to improve Centennial marketing New initiatives implemented to increase occupancy

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College officials and managers of a student housing complex have renewed efforts to market the property to students, which they hope will mean increased occupancy in the future.

Last year, JJC and owners of Centennial Commons, an apartment complex for JJC students, were at odds over the marketing of the property, which had a declining occupancy rate after college officials put in new restrictions to protect students’ privacy.

JJC officials decided to revise the school’s policy and provide a list of prospective and attending students’ contact information to Centennial Commons management solely for the purposes of marketing and promoting the housing complex, according to a Dec. 15 memo posted on the Electronic Municipal Market Access website.

The college and housing staff have also worked together more to market the college. Information about Centennial Commons was included in the JJC spring 2016 registration guide.

Zelinko said last fall that since the 2014 school year, college officials had not sent a list of student contact information for the number of students whose information Centennial Commons previously received. This made it difficult for housing staff to advertise to enough students and subsequently affected revenue and bond payments.

Difficulties with Centennial Commons receiving student contact infor-

mation were reported in a March 18, 2015, disclosure posted on EMMA. The disclosure stated Campus Evolution Villages, which manages Centennial Commons, was unable to market to potential tenants as effectively as in the past and the occupancy rate for the 2014 fall semester was 60 percent, compared to about 80 percent the previous fall semester.

At the March 8 JJC Board of Trustees meeting, Kristin Mulvey,

JJC Foundation executive director, thanked Michael Hernandez, the college’s marketing and creative services director, and his staff, for working with the housing staff to put information about Centennial Commons in the registration guide.

“I know there has been a huge effort put on by both the college and the housing staff to get the word out to our potential students,” she said at the meeting.

Mulvey said other initiatives that should bring more occupancy to Centennial Commons include allowing the property to accept students who are part of the Military Medical Corpsman to Practical Nurse program as well as attracting more international students.

She told JJC trustees at a Feb. 26 meeting that faculty were informed of a new rent incentives program called ““Fill The Flat,” which will give discounts to students who get a group of four students together to sign a lease for a four-unit apartment.

Will County Forest Preserve considers bond refinance

JOLIET – Forest Preserve District of Will County officials plan to refinance 2008 bonds used to further the district’s land acquisition program – a move that will result in about $1.5 million in savings, said Finance Committee Chairman Ray Tuminello, R-New Lenox.

The money will help offset costs tied to the district’s early retirement plan and allow the district to use cash reserves for planned trail, preserve

and site improvements over the next few years, Tuminello said.

The 2008 bonds have an interest rate of 5 percent. Refinancing the remaining $17 million will bring it down to about 2.1 percent, Tuminello said.

The estimated $1.5 million in savings will be used to finance five-year bonds – set to mature Dec. 21, 2021 – to pay for costs associated with the district’s early retirement incentive program.

The program is a deal offered to employees who chose to retire early.

Initial up front costs are estimated

between $1.7 million and $2.4 million, but over time, district officials say they will see significant savings from the program.

The bond refinance was discussed last week at the district’s Finance Committee meeting.

Ralph Schultz, the district’s chief operating officer, said the move avoids the need to bond out for capital projects and take on additional debt.

Among the projects slated for the district is an east-west crossing that links the DuPage River Trail in Shorewood with the Rock Run Greenway

The projects slated do not rely on state grant dollars, Tuminello said.

Schultz said the district has about $9 million in cash reserves on hand – or between nine and 10 months of operating costs.

The refinancing plan will be on the Board of Commissioners’ April 12 agenda.

Will County’s Wauponsee trail users get new access

WILMINGTON – Wauponsee Glacial Trail users can now park at a new trailhead and work their way across the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie to catch a glimpse of the preserve’s new bison herd.

The Forest Preserve District of Will County recently completed the Midewin-Wauponsee Trailhead in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service – which owns and operates Midewin, according to a Forest Preserve District news release.

The new trailhead is located just south of Manhattan on Hoff Road.

South of the trailhead, the Wauponsee Glacial Trail intersects with a path that leads into the 19,000-acre Midewin, according to the news release.

Midewin officials reintroduced American bison to the preserve in

late October.

The bison enclosure is also accessible via the Iron Bridge Trailhead on Route 53, but Ralph Schultz, the district’s chief operating officer, said the new trailhead provides another route for those eyeing a longer trek.

The journey from Midewin-Wauponsee Trailhead to the bison area is about 8 miles, according to the news release.

Senior lunches provide hot meals, socialization Minooka’s new community room is a hot spot on the third Monday of every month when seniors gather for a nice hot meal and a few games of Bingo afterward.

The luncheon is part of Community Nutrition Network & Senior Services Association’s community cafe dining meal program, which serves 126 communities in Grundy, Kendall and suburban Cook counties.

For just $6, Minooka area seniors get a good hot meal catered by one of several area restaurants.

Minooka is just one site for the lunch program; others include R-Place in Morris, Whistle Stop Cafe in Diamond, the Coal City Lions Club, the Mazon American Legion and Saratoga Towers in Morris.

Minooka Mayor Pat Brennan was one of several area mayors who attended CNNSSA’s luncheons March 21 to 25 in support of the “March for Meals” drive to raise funds and community support for the nonprofit’s services.

Brennan, Morris Mayor Richard Kopczik and Coal City Mayor Terry Halliday all took part in the March luncheons, along with other area dignitaries.

In Minooka, Brennan was on hand to eat and talk about what’s going on in the village, and to answer questions seniors had about their community.

In years past, Brennan was one of

many mayors who served meals at the sit-down luncheon at Saratoga Towers in Morris during March for Meals.

But since Minooka’s lunch is a buffet, Brennan didn’t have to be on kitchen duty, he said.

Minooka volunteers Jay and Betty Richie have been going to the senior lunches in Minooka for about eight years and they hate to miss one.

“It’s a great time, great camaraderie,” said Jay. “It’s a good time getting together with everybody.”

Now the Richies are two of the first ones to show up at the Minooka community room to set up tables and get the room ready. They do it because they like to volunteer.

“We try to help out the village as much as we can,” Jay said.

He and Betty both like going because they get a chance to catch up with what’s going on around town.

“There’s a lot of visiting with people,” Betty said. “I look forward to

seeing them the next month.”

And then there’s Bingo in Minooka; they’ll play 10 regular games and a coverall, Jay said.

In addition to the community cafe meals, CNNSSA is one of the largest providers of home-delivered meals for seniors in the nation, serving almost 500,000 meals to more than 6,000 seniors in 2015.

According to its mission, CNNSSA “provides meals and resources to older adults and persons with disabilities and assists them in leading active and healthy lives.”

Jay said Minooka’s community room is a great place to have the lunches and attendance has grown to more than 60 people each month.

“It’s just the greatest thing since sliced bread,” he said.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Ed Izenstark inherited Huntington’s disease from his biological father, but he only found out after the fatal nerve disorder began to show itself and after months of frustrating and costly efforts to learn more about his origins.

The 30-year-old father of three from the Chicago suburb of Batavia was hospitalized last May with severe stomach pains, nausea and involuntary twitching that his doctors couldn’t explain.

Suspecting it could be genetic, Izenstark sought more information about his background but had a hard time getting it from state adoption agencies. In February, he finally learned that his birth father had the disease. On Friday, his fears were confirmed that he did, too. “(The information) should be available to anyone, if it’s yours. But it’s not yours. It’s the state’s and the state decides,” Izenstark said.

The Illinois House is considering a measure that would allow agencies to let people know the reasons they were put up for adoption and other information that wouldn’t identify their birth parents, including details of their medical histories. Its sponsor, Rep. Sara Fei-

tion laws still don’t do enough to meet their needs.

Margaret LaRaviere, director of the Cook County Office of Adoption and Child Custody Advocacy, which investigates adoption cases, said adoption agencies are legally allowed to release non-identifying information to adoptees and adoptive parents. That could include occupation, age, race and ethnicity of birth parents and the existence of biological siblings. Agencies also can disclose medical and mental health histories, but only if the biological parents reported this information, she said.

But the amount of information released by public and private agencies varies.

“It’s tough. You want to respect the biological parent, but you also want to help adult adoptees who are desperate for information,” LaRaviere said.

The letter the agency sent Izenstark in February included information about his biological parents’ physical appearances, occupations and hobbies, in addition to brief summaries of their medical histories. Under the description of his birth father, it said: “Reported medical and mental health history also includes anemia, diabetes, Hunting (sic) Chorea a nervous system disorder (other family members had it as well).”

She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, James; one son, Craig (Cheri); two daughters, Kathy (Lonnie) McCollum, and Karen (Joe) Boseo all of Manhattan; her grandchildren, Corie (Brandon) Delimata, Craig (Brooke) Patterson, Kevin (Jessica) Patterson, Tom (Amanda) McKenna, Kyle McKenna, Tyler McKenna, Jacki (Kyle) Wesolowski, Julie (Alex) Szepelak, Steve McCollum, Jake McCollum, Dan (Melanie) Boseo, Andy (Kazia) Boseo, Joe (Tina) Boseo; fifteen great grandchildren and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

Preceded in death by her parents, Gerould and Ruby Macklem; two sisters, Jean Evans and Nancy Sheler; and one granddaughter, Kristi (Mark) Sewing.

Jan was born in Davenport, IA. She was a long time resident of Manhattan and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church since 1962. Jan was also the founder of The Rosary Makers of St. Joseph.

Funeral service for Jan Patterson will be 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 13, 2016, in procession from Forsythe Gould Funeral Home, to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 235 West North St., Manhattan, for 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial.

A potential incentive for riders: Uber or Lyft can be summoned immediately with an app; trips on MBTA vehicles must be scheduled a day ahead.

“My guess is it will be very appealing to people who need to go shorter distances where the fares are under $15 and they can get an on-demand ride as opposed to booking 24 hours in advance,” said Brian Shortsleeve, the agency’s chief administrator.

But convenience comes with a catch. With a limited number of wheelchair-accessible vehicles, the ride-hailing services would be available largely to people who can walk. And while a majority of individuals certified to use paratransit fit that bill, advocates worry about creating an unfair and possibly even illegal two-tiered system for the disabled – one serving people who can walk, the other those whose needs the private vehicles can’t accommodate.

“We don’t want racial segregation, and we also don’t want disability segregation,” said Marilyn Golden, senior policy analyst for the California-based Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund.

Uber and Lyft have both cited efforts to improve offerings for disabled riders. But the services have argued they are technology, not transportation, companies, meaning they are not required to provide accessible vehicles.

Advocates for the disabled have filed a

handful of lawsuits.

In January, a coalition including disability rights groups and labor unions wrote to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, known as Metro, expressing alarm over the agency’s interest in contracting with companies such as Uber or Lyft.

“This is of grave concern to our coalition for many reasons, most importantly because neither company has adequate access to wheelchair accessible vehicles,” the letter stated. Passenger safety and inadequate driver training were also cited as concerns, though activists did applaud Metro for seeking alternative forms of transportation.

The system already supplements its MetroAccess service with alternatives such as Transport DC, which offers $5 taxi rides to the disabled, including wheelchair-accessible cabs.

Metro hopes to solicit formal proposals from ride-sharing companies this summer but will pay careful attention to how such a program is structured, said Christian Kent, assistant manager of access services.

Pace, which operates the Chicago-area paratransit system, has had preliminary meetings with Uber and Lyft, said agency spokesman Doug Sullivan. He cited as a potential barrier the strict federal guidelines that drivers for Pace – or any company under contract with Pace – must meet for training, and drug and alcohol testing.

ACLU: Chicago monitoring of protest groups ‘unsettling’

CHICAGO – The American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois said reports of Chicago police monitoring peaceful protest groups is “unsettling” and is calling for City Council hearings.

The group issued a statement Sunday responding to a Chicago Sun-Times report, which outlined seven investigations by police since 2009 to monitor groups exercising free-speech rights. Emails released by the city in the wake of the 2014 fatal police-involved shooting of Laquan McDonald showed officials watched actions of protesters closely. The black teenager was shot by a white officer 16 times.

The Sun-Times reported the department’s top attorney approved 2015 plans to send undercover officers to monitor meetings, including those held by Black Lives Matter activists, churches and philanthropic organizations.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the investigations were to ensure safety. He said while the department was approved to send undercover officers, it sent plainclothes officers.

CARBONDALE – Reports of racial epithets by some Southern Illinois University students at Carbondale campus residence hall forums have prompted an investigation by school officials.

University spokeswoman Rae Goldsmith told The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan the inquiry was launched in response to a formal complaint.

Freshman Leilani Bartlett, who is black, alleges in a video posted online that during open forums at her dormitory earlier this month, student supporters of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump used the N-word and said black students should “go back to Africa,” among other things.

Interim Chancellor Brad Colwell responded with an open letter calling on students to uphold “values of respect for individuals, diversity and inclusion.”

He said “anything less diminishes” everyone and free speech is right and value to be used respectfully and wisely.

BOSTON – Several U.S. transit systems looking to defray costs of providing services for the disabled are weighing partnerships with Uber and Lyft, unsettling some advocates who note ride-hailing services have themselves faced criticism over accessibility.

Paratransit, better known under names such as “The Ride,” “Accessa-Ride,” or “Dial-a-Ride,” is required under the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act. But the costs, which include door-to-door pickup and drop-off, can be steep.

The average cost of operating a single paratransit trip is about $23 in the U.S., compared with less than $4 for the average trip on bus or light rail. In Boston, the average cost per ride is about $45, in Washington, about $50, and in New York, nearly $57, officials said.

Transit agencies nationwide logged about 223 million paratransit trips at a cost exceeding $5.1 billion – about 12 percent of total transit operating costs – in 2013, according to the most recent data from the American Public Transportation Association. The price tag is particularly high in major cities, where agencies struggle with regular service and maintenance.

“I understand there are budget concerns. But for me this is a quality-of-life issue,” said Sarah Kaplan, 32, who was born with cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. She rides a vehicle operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority to get to and from her job as internship coordinator with the Boston Center for Independent Living.

“I want the right to leave my house like everyone else,” Kaplan said.

In 2012, the MBTA doubled fares from $2 to $4 for The Ride, triggering protests; several people chained their wheelchairs together and blocked traffic. Fares were later rolled back to $3 for most rides.

The deficit-ridden agency now hopes to cut $10 million in annual paratransit costs by expanding an existing taxi voucher system and contracting with ride-hailing services.

The plan, not yet finalized, would charge customers $2 per ride, while the MBTA contributes up to $13 for the trip. If a trip costs more than $15, the passenger would pay the difference.

Presidential candidates shift to delegate hunt

WASHINGTON – The Democratic and Republican presidential candidates are coming to terms with the cold mathematical reality of chasing delegates ahead of their nominating conventions, with front-runners Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump driving for challenge-proof majorities against rivals who won’t go away.

For Trump, who remains well short of the 1,237 delegates he needs to clinch the GOP nod, that means his campaign focuses on developing a delegate-centered strategy akin to the one that rival Ted Cruz has pursued for months.

“A more traditional approach is needed and Donald Trump recognizes that,” Paul Manafort, Trump’s new delegate chief, said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Even so, the billionaire developer later in the day complained that the system is “corrupt” and “crooked” and said it’s unfair that the person who wins the most votes may not be the nominee.

“What they’re trying to do is subvert the movement with crooked shenanigans,” Trump told a crowd of thousands gathered in a packed airport hangar in Rochester, New York. “We’re supposed to be a democracy,” he added, drawing parallels with Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders.

If denied the GOP nomination, he went on to warn, “you’re going to have a big problem, folks, because there are people who don’t like what’s going on.”

For Clinton, who lost Wyoming Saturday night to Sanders, it means maintaining her commanding leads among delegates and popular votes no matter how many states Sanders wins – or how much “momentum” he claims.

Key to her drive is a win April 19 in New York, which she represented in the U.S. Senate.

Asked in a CNN interview that aired Sunday whether she’s quietly preparing a strategy in the unlikely event of a contested Democratic convention, she replied, “No, I intend to have the number of delegates that are required to be nominated.”

After stops in New York City churches, Clinton headed to Baltimore for her first campaign rally in Maryland, where she picked up the endorsement of popular local congressman Elijah Cummings.

Maryland, where Clinton is favored, holds its primary on April 26 along with Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Delaware and Connecticut.

Clinton’s campaign is pushing for big wins across the northeast, in an effort to gain what they’ve termed an “all but insurmountable” lead in the delegate race. It’s a strategy shared

BRUSSELS – The extremists who struck Brussels last month and killed 32 people initially planned to launch a second assault on France in the wake of the November attacks in Paris, authorities said Sunday.

But the perpetrators were “surprised by the speed of the progress in the ongoing investigation” and decided to rush an attack on Brussels instead of going back to France, the Belgian federal prosecutor’s office said in a statement. It didn’t provide any details on the initial French plot or its targets.

Both France and Belgium warned it was no time to relax despite the recent spate of arrests.

“It’s fresh proof of the very real threat that weighs on all of Europe, and on France in particular,” French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said.

Belgian Justice Minister Koen Geens said it amounted to “a dirty war” when more attacks could be expected in Belgium, France or beyond.

“Once the intention is there, the place of execution is rather secondary,” Geens told VRT network. “If we secure one place, another target opens

– pushed the killers to action.

A laptop seized from a garbage can on a street outside the suicide bombers last known address contained a message purportedly from Ibrahim El Bakraoui, who blew himself up in the airport attack, that indicated he was expecting to be arrested imminently following the arrest of Abdeslam.

In it, prosecutors said El Bakraoui wrote that he felt “in a hurry,” and “no longer knowing what to do,” and “being hunted from everywhere” – all indications they might have looked for a speedier attack than initially planned.

Belgian police detained four men in Brussels raids over the weekend who were charged with participating in “terrorist murders” and the “activities of a terrorist group” in relation to the Brussels attacks. One of them, Mohamed Abrini, has also been charged in relation to the Paris attacks, prosecutors said.

Abrini has acknowledged being the “man in the hat” spotted alongside the two suicide bombers who blew themselves up at Brussels Airport, officials said. Surveillance footage also has placed him in the convoy with the attackers who headed to Paris ahead of the Nov. 13 massacre.

Entering Sunday’s North Central Community College Conference doubleheader against Harper on the diamond that bears his name, King’s teams had accumulated a 1,032-657-1 overall record, a .611 winning percentage.

Three NJCAA national championships, three runnerup finishes, two third places and 12 World Series appearances in all highlight his resume.

Rest assured, JJC is not accustomed to having a sub.-500 record 35 games into a season. But that’s where the Wolves are. They came into

The issue has been offense. The numbers are not JJC-like. The Wolves split a doubleheader with Madison Area on Saturday, losing 2-0 and winning 6-0. Entering those games, they were hitting .269 as a team with a .343 on-base percentage and .383 slugging percentage.

In addition, they have not been executing their small-ball attack with any

level of consistency.

“Our pitching staff is doing decently well,” King said. “At the plate is what is holding us back. We will be a good team if we ever start swinging the bats.”

First baseman Steve Wittkamp, a Minooka graduate, entered the weekend leading the team with a .355 batting average, .430 on-base percentage and .626 slugging percentage. He and Jake Drada shared the team lead in home runs with five, and the rest of the team had hit two.

Freshman right fielder Davis Purviance (Lockport), who entered Saturday hitting .353 with a .421 on-base mark, can provide a spark. He has just

returned to the lineup after missing about three weeks following a face-first crash into an outfield fence.

“Davis is working his way back up,” King said. “He was in a nice little groove before he decided to kiss the fence.”

“It’s been a process working to get back,” Purviance said. “I had three parts broken in my nose and a fracture in the occipital bone.

“But I feel like I am back now. I’ll be trying to get on base, be active on the base paths, move guys around, just do my job.”

BELLEVILLE – After taking second in the Belleville West Invitational the last two years, the Minooka boys track and field team earned top-four finishes in 13 of the 24 events to earn 104 points and claim first place on Saturday. Lockport was fourth with 60.5 points.

The only two event wins for the Indians came from both the F/S 4x400m relay and varsity 4x400m relay teams.

Justin Wolz, Maceo Findlay, Brandon Adams and Matt Dlugopolski ran the varsity race in 3:21.82, a time currently ranked No. 2 in Illinois. The F/S 4x4 was run by Justin Myers, Jordan Freese, Aaron Arroyo and Matt Schofield, whose time was 3:34.43.

King said there are no excuses for the team’s offensive showing to date, but did note, “We are struggling at the plate, but we have been facing good teams with good pitching.”

JJC opponents could say the same thing. The Wolves’ pitching – and defense – have been solid.

In Saturday’s doubleheader, sophomore right-hander Pat Kenny suffered the tough-luck loss in the opener, and Matt Taller (Plainfield South) tossed a three-hit shutout in the nightcap.

Kenny, who was a major contributor on the Wolves’ basketball team, which lost to eventual Division III national champion Rock Valley in the regional final, did not allow a ball to be hit out of the infield until the sixth inning, when Madison scored the game’s only two runs.

“I came here this year because it’s closer to home and because I could play basketball and baseball,” said Kenny, a Neuqua Valley graduate who pitched at Parkland College in Champaign last year.

Kenny throws a mid-to-upper 80s fastball, a knuckle curve that was working well Saturday, a cutter and a circle change. After Saturday’s outing, Kenny is 2-1 with a 1.14 ERA. After striking out six and walking one against Madison, he has fanned 34 and walked six.

Thomas Jeffries (Providence) and Charlie Wright (Lemont) both were 3-3 and tied for the staff lead in victories entering the weekend. Taller, Brennan Polcyn (Minooka), Nick Evola (Morris), Cameron Bragg (Plainfield North) and rubber-armed reliever Trevor Maly (Minooka) are among those who also have worked significant innings and provide King with a deep staff.

“We’ll be fine if our offense could pick it up,” Kenny said. “In spots, we’ve seen it.”

“Once our offense gets going consistently, we’ll be doing good,” Taller said.

King does not necessarily subscribe to the theory that bats heat up as the weather warms. This is one time, however, when he would love to see it happen. As he said, “We will be a good team if we ever start swinging the bats.”

CHICAGO – The early season postponements keep piling up for the Cleveland Indians.

The Indians’ game against the White Sox on Sunday was postponed because of rain. Rain fell during the morning and was forecast for the rest of the day. Temperatures were in the 40s.

The Indians have been postponed three times in the first week of the season because of inclement weather.

“You start getting the reports of what it’s going to be,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “There’s a chance you lose both starters. It was going to be steady rain all day long.”

The game will be made up on May 23 as part of a traditional doubleheader that will begin at 4:10 p.m.

The second game will start at 7:10 p.m. or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

The teams also played in snow on Friday and in 30-degree temperatures on Saturday. The Indians have been able to take batting and infield practice just once. They were also

postponed last Monday and Thursday against Boston in Cleveland.

The White Sox and Indians split the first two games of their series.

Cleveland won 7-1 on Friday before losing 7-3 on Saturday.

The White Sox play the Minnesota Twins on Monday in their home opener. The Indians are off on Monday before beginning a series against Tampa Bay. Josh Tomlin was scheduled to make his season debut Sunday against the White Sox, but will be skipped in the rotation.

Jose Quintana (0-0, 3.18 ERA), the White Sox’s scheduled starter on Sunday, will instead pitch Monday against the Twins. The other starting pitchers will be pushed back a day.

The White Sox recalled right-handed pitcher Michael Ynoa from Double-A Birmingham on Sunday when outfielder Adam Eaton went on the paternity list. Ynoa’s time with the team will probably be brief.

PHOENIX – Jake Arrieta homered and pitched seven innings, helping the Cubs finish off an impressive first week by beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-3 on Sunday.

The Cubs are tied with Cincinnati for the best record in the NL at 5-1. The Cubs host the Reds in their home opener Monday night at Wrigley Field.

Arrieta (2-0) allowed three runs and eight hits, striking out six. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner gave himself a boost with a two-out, two-run homer in the second inning off Shelby Miller (0-1).

Arrieta hit two home runs in 2015 and has three in his career.

Jorge Soler also homered for the Cubs. Miguel Montero hit two doubles off the center field wall against his former team and Tommy La Stella added three hits for the Cubs.

Paul Goldschmidt and Socrates Brito connected off Arrieta. It was Brito’s first major league home run.

Soler’s solo homer put the Cubs ahead 4-3 in the sixth. Miller pitched to two batter in the inning and left.

Soler had a sacrifice fly and La Stella had an RBI single in the seventh.

Willett wins the Masters after shocking Spieth collapse

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Danny Willett in a green jacket was hard to believe considering he wasn’t even sure he could play the Masters two weeks ago.

No one was more stunned than Jordan Spieth.

Nine holes away from another wireto-wire victory, the defending Masters champion threw it away Sunday with a collapse around Amen Corner that was shocking even by Augusta National standards. With a five-shot lead heading to the 10th tee, he dropped six shots in three holes and could never catch up.

Even more painful for Spieth?

He had to go to Butler Cabin and to the 18th green ceremony to present the green jacket to Willett.

“It was a really tough 30 minutes for me that hopefully I never experience again,” Spieth said.

And it was a comeback that ranks among the most surprising at the Masters.

Willett always had this Sunday circled on his calendar – the due date of his first child. He wasn’t planning to be at Augusta National until his wife gave birth to their son, Zachariah James, on

March 30 and sent the 28-year-old English on an improbable path to becoming a major champion.

Five shots behind with six holes to play, Willett birdied three of his last six holes to polish off a round that might not get its due because of the unforgettable images of Spieth’s meltdown. Willett closed with a 5-under 67, with no bogeys on his card, to match the best score of the weekend.

When he slipped on the green jacket, it already was early Monday in England – his wife Nicole’s 28th birthday.

“We talk about fate, talk about everything else that goes with it,” Willett said. “It’s just a crazy, crazy week.”

Willett ended Europe’s 17-year drought at Augusta National, and he became the first player from England in a green jacket since Nick Faldo in 1996.

How fitting.

Twenty years ago, Faldo also shot a bogey-free 67 in a final round remembered just as much for Greg Norman throwing away a six-shot lead.

Spieth was trying to become only the fourth back-to-back winner of the Masters, and the first player in 156 years of championship golf to go wire-to-wire in successive years in a major. And it

looked inevitable when he ran off four straight birdies to end the front nine and build a five-shot lead.

This didn’t look like one of those Masters that would start on the back nine Sunday.

But it did – quickly.

Spieth made bogey from the bunker on No. 10. A tee shot into the trees on the 11th, missing an 8-foot par putt. He still had a two-shot lead and only needed to get past the dangerous par-3 12th to settle himself, especially with two par 5s in front of him.

His 9-iron sailed to the right, bounded off the slope and into the water.

His wedge from the drop area was fat, and Spieth turned his head as the ball plopped into the water again. He had to get up-and-down from a bunker just to make a quadruple-bogey 7.

“It was a lack of discipline to hit it over the bunker coming off two bogeys, instead of recognizing I was still leading the Masters,” Spieth said.

The turnaround left him dazed. Spieth was five shots ahead on the 10th tee and three shots behind when he walked to the 13th tee.

Willett poured it on with a shot into the 14th to about 4 feet, and a tee shot

on the par-3 16th to 7 feet for a birdie that stretched his lead. Spieth still had a chance when he birdied both par 5s to get within two shots, and then hit his tee shot to 8 feet behind the hole on the 16th. But he missed the birdie putt, and when he hit into a bunker and failed to save par on the 17th, it was over.

Spieth had led after seven straight rounds at the Masters, a streak that ended in a most cruel fashion. He shot 41 on the back nine for a 73, and was runner-up for the second time in three years.

Lee Westwood, playing with Willett, closed with a 69. He made eagle on the 15th hole to get within one shot of the lead, and then three-putted the 16th hole to fall away. Westwood has played in 72 majors without winning.

Dustin Johnson also had an outside chance, even after four putts for a double bogey on the fifth hole. He missed eagle putts from 15 feet and 20 feet on the par 5s on the back nine, and then took double bogey on the 17th. Johnson closed with a 71 and tied for fourth with Paul Casey (67) and J.B. Holmes (68).

Smylie Kaufman, one shot out of the lead in his Masters debut, closed with an 81.

FORT WORTH, Texas – A broom was waiting for Kyle Busch in Victory Lane at Texas.

Busch took the lead after the final restart Saturday night, completing his second NASCAR weekend sweep in a row and becoming the first driver to do that since Harry Gant in 1991.

“It’s pretty darn good, I’ll tell you that,” Busch said when asked what it’s like to be him right now.

“I’ve got a great wife, a great son and I’m having a blast, living the dream.”

While completing his personal Texas two-step, Busch ended Jimmie Johnson’s three-race winning streak at the high-banked, 11/2-mile Texas track. It was Busch’s 36th Sprint Cup victory, a week after also winning at Martinsville.

Busch also won the Xfinity race at Texas on Friday night, his 80th win in that series that was coming off a two-week break. At Martinsville, he also got his 45th Camping World Truck Series victory. That’s four consecutive NASCAR Series wins in a span of eight days.

On the first lap after the final restart, lap 302 of 334, Busch went on the outside of Turn 4 to shoot around Martin Truex Jr. for the lead. Busch led the rest of the way in his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, winning by nearly 4 seconds over Dale Earnhardt Jr. with Joey Logano third.

“The restart was going to be key. If I could just get out in front of him, I knew I could protect the rest of the race,” Busch said.

“They had a good restart, but we got a better one.”

It was Busch’s second Sprint Cup victory at Texas, where in 2013 he also swept both spring races.

Gant had consecutive sweeps at Richmond and Dover in 1991.

NASCAR’s first night race of the season actually went into the next morning, ending a few minutes after midnight Texas time because the start was delayed for 1 hour, 50 minutes while drying the track after a couple of light rain showers during the afternoon.

Johnson, who had won five of the previous seven Texas races, finished fourth. When the Sprint Cup Series returns to Texas in November, he will be trying to win the fall race there for the fifth year in a row.

Chase Elliott, the rookie teammate of Earnhardt and Johnson at Hendrick Motorsports, finished fifth. Elliott has qualified fourth but had to start at the back of the 40-car field after a transmission change in the No. 24 Chevrolet.

The four Hendrick drivers finished in the top eight, with Kasey Kahne eighth.

All four Gibbs drivers finished in the top 12, with polesitter Carl Edwards seventh, Matt Kenseth 11th and Denny Hamlin 12th.

Edwards led 124 laps and was running second on a restart with 113 laps to go after pitting during a caution. Within a few laps after that, he had to go back in the pits because of a loose front right wheel and dropped all the way to 19th. He has won three Cup races at Texas, the last when sweeping the 2008 races.

Truex led six times for 141 laps.

Austin Dillon, on older tires, got loose with 40 laps to go when Hamlin came under him going on the backstretch. Johnson was coming up behind him and tried to avoid contact before tapping into the back of Dillon’s No. 3 that then spun.

Truex, who was not involved in the incident, and Dillon had stayed on the track running first and second when everyone else pitted during a caution five laps earlier.

Busch took over the season points lead, six ahead of Johnson and seven ahead of Kevin Harvick, the previous points leader.

Harvick finished 10th at Texas, which is one of the four active tracks where he hasn’t won. He’s 0 for 27 there.

Even if you choose to forgo treatment, your doctor should regularly monitor you for complications. BPH can increase your risk of urinary tract infections and, possibly, bladder stones. The increased risk of infection comes from difficulty in fully emptying the bladder. If all the urine is not emptied out of the body, bacteria in the urine that remains inside the bladder can multiply rapidly.

If your symptoms become burdensome, talk to your doctor about treatment options.

Usually a combination of lifestyle changes and medication can relieve the worst symptoms.

Lifestyle changes include taking time to empty your bladder completely. That can require a little patience. When your stream stops, try just sitting there on the pot or standing in front of it for a minute or two.

Try to will your bladder to release more urine. It often will start again if you just wait and continue to try to urinate.

Another trick is to avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages in the evenings. A final tip is to ask your doctor if any medicines you are taking for other conditions might be making your bladder a bit sluggish. There are lots of medicines that have this effect.

You ask about the value of medications that treat BPH. I would try the lifestyle changes I’ve mentioned first. If you’re not getting adequate relief, medicines may help.

Dear Reader: Benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, is the most common cause of prostate enlargement. As the name suggests, BPH is harmless; it does not lead to prostate cancer.

Up to two-thirds of men with BPH never develop any symptoms. However, other men find BPH can make life very unpleasant.

You seem to be somewhere in between.

The most common symptoms of BPH involve changes or problems with urination.

They include: • a hesitant, interrupted or weak urine stream; • a strong urge to urinate repeatedly throughout the day and night, even if there’s not a lot of urine in the bladder; • leaking or dribbling urine; • a sense of incomplete emptying; • more frequent urination, especially at night.

Even if you find your symptoms to be manageable, it doesn’t hurt to reassess every now and then. One way to get a sense of the severity of your symptoms is by calculating your urinary symptom score. I’ve put a copy of this questionnaire on my website, www.askdoctork.com.

If your symptoms don’t bother you too much, you and your doctor might choose to do nothing other than keep an eye on them. Most physicians advise against active treatment for men with mild symptoms because the side effects of the treatment can outweigh the potential benefits.

Last week, we looked at the few bidding conventions I believe all pairs should employ. There is one other for serious partnerships: the splinter bid. It comes up rarely, but it is great when it does because it helps you to reach low-point-count slams and to avoid bad slams.

A splinter bid is usually a doublejump-shift to show a big fit with partner’s suit, at least game-going values and a singleton (or void) in the suit just named. The splinter is typically below game in the agreed suit and is one level above a bid needed in a natural sense. One caveat: Do not make a splinter bid with a singleton king (and try to avoid it with a bare ace).

In this deal, North’s four-diamond response was a splinter bid. South then knew that he had no diamond losers, because if necessary he could have ruffed his low diamonds in the dummy. He used Blackwood before bidding seven spades.

After West led the diamond king, what should South have done?

Declarer seemed to have 13 top tricks: five spades, two hearts, one diamond and five clubs. He just had to draw trumps -- but how?

If spades were 2-2 or 3-1, there was no problem. If East had all four, the contact was unmakable. But in case West had four spades, South cashed his queen first. Then he twice led through West, using dummy’s king and ace to capture West’s 10 and jack.
