eventeen years ago, people told Marty Duffy he was crazy when he decided to stop selling Anheuser Busch beers at his bar, the Cellar Peanut Pub. The nascent craft beer industry was still in its infancy. Many saw them as a fad, something you couldn’t rely on them to pay the bills in Oskaloosa, Duffy’s hometown, and the location of the original Cellar Peanut Pub. Determined to be a pioneer, Duffy refused to give up on his vision, remaking his bar into a destination for craft beer enthusiasts.

“It was a motivating factor,” Duffy said. “People said I would fail.”

Far from failing, Duffy has ridden a tidal wave of success, as the nation’s craft brew industry continues to grow by leaps and bounds, now a $26 billion industry, which Duffy has been a local champion. Despite a sluggish nationwide beer market that saw a one percent decline in 2017, craft beer sales posted a five percent increase over the same time period as Americans continue to expand their horizons. For Duffy, it’s all about the power of choice.

“Options. I love giving people options,” Duffy said.

With more than 50 craft beers on tap, Duffy will have options aplenty to offer guests at his newest location in Newton. Scheduled to open sometime this fall, the pub’s bartenders won’t just be pulling tap handles — every one of staff members Duffy hired have undergone training to become a Certified Beer Server through the Cicerone program. That education and experience has paid off. The Cellar Peanut Pub was named Iowa’s favorite craft brew bar by www.craftbeer.com earlier this year.

“They see we have a passion for craft beer,” Duffy said.

It’s not just the options. Duffy said he’s constantly worked to stay focused on customer service. When his grandmother loaned him the money he needed to purchase the bar she had two stipulations — Duffy had to pay her back in one year, and he had to wait three years until he hired anyone. For the first three years, from Monday through Saturday, Duffy was the pub’s only employee. The lessons he learned during that time have had a profound impact, he said. That customer focused mindset is what he believes will set the Cellar Peanut Pub apart.

B

lacksmith Steve White places a rod of glowing steel onto an anvil and begins to strike with a forging hammer. It emerged from coals burning at nearly 2,000 degrees. The rod starts to curl.

“It came out just a little too hot,” White said. “You can’t actually melt iron in there. It will burn.”

White has been a blacksmith demonstrator inside the Iowa State Fair’s Pioneer Hall for 29 years. As he manipulates and shapes the metal, a fair-goer wearing a “Nothing Compares” cap featuring a breaded corn dog asks, “What are you making there?”

“I don’t know yet,” White responds, never breaking eye contact with the metal. “It’s a point. I’m going to put an eye on it, probably like what I just finished there.” He gestures to a pair of hooks designed to hold hanging baskets.

White has lived in Newton since he was 12 years old and has worked as a blacksmith demonstrator under the moniker “Skunk River Forge” for more than 15 years. He’s self-taught, learning the ancient skill from books at the Newton Public Library.

“Now they have YouTube,” White said.

Teaching kids has become a big part of what the 62-year-old White does, and he’s a frequent demonstrator for other professionals. White attends several structured blacksmith meetings annually where he is hired to show proper technique and how to make pieces. Years ago, he took a week-long class in Missouri where he was introduced to a group of blacksmiths from Israel. One of the metal forgers — Uri Hofi — and White became fast friends.

As he pounds a piece of steel rod with his hand-made hammer in the waning days of the 2018 state fair, White said he’s made thousands of pieces — home decor, tools like spring fullers, braided and twisted art.

His preferred material is steel. White said modern-day blacksmiths rarely work real rod iron. It’s too difficult to find. White explains it’s a strong material but riddled with stands of silica. He buys his steel in scrap pieces from wherever he can, including the random vendor he was preparing to meet later that day at the Jim Cownie Cultural Center.

“There’s a lot of smoke when I start it up fresh but once it gets burning, once it burns a while it converts to coals. The impurities and gasses burn off,” he said. “It’s kind of similar of how wood is to charcoal.

It’s pure carbon now.”

His Pioneer Hall shop is adorned by earth-toned barn wood and concrete. The forge furnace is fashioned of pitch black iron and is White’s personal piece of equipment. All the supplies, including the bellow, belong to White. On the eighth day of the fair, he’s burned through 150 pounds of Virginia coal which he purchased in Illinois.

He still had 125 pounds to burn.

Etched into the wood planks making White’s rustic Pioneer Hall cubical are six hash marks next to forging tools which hang on a custom rack and photo portraits of a white-breaded man in a straw hat and suspenders. This is Ron West, of Baxter.

The fellow blacksmith died six years ago, and White carves a line into the wood every year they have a state fair without him.

White said his friend used to teach the craft to passersby at their booth.

“I do (the etching) so I don’t have to remember. He was a character,” White said.

“I didn’t learn very much blacksmithing from him because I went through other channels, but we did work together. If he was alive, he’d be about 81 now.”

At the booth, there has always been a loose team of blacksmiths who take turns demonstrating. A blacksmith from Marshalltown and the blacksmith from the Haverhill Museum also forge at Pioneer Hall.

White’s day job is at the Newton Waterworks, but when he’s not forging at the fair, White has found another niche. His booth features several yellow ribbons from the Iowa State Fair Bread Growing Contest.

“It’s fun,” White said. “The only one I enter is ‘best groomed.’ There is no way I could win longest anymore.”

White is soft-spoken in his modesty, but he has influenced and made an impact on dozens of fellow blacksmiths and countless state fair goers at Pioneer Hall. One of those is 33-year-old Dave Lammers.

From Sioux Center, Lammers has “never missed” an Iowa State Fair. It’s a family tradition. Lammers starting watching White and the Pioneer Hall blacksmiths work as a kid and first came on the other side of the rope when he was 12.

“I picked up some bad skills by some self-teaching,” Lammers said. “Working with Steve, you get those little thumbnail pieces of information you learn — if you can’t hold it you shouldn’t hit it. Those little words of wisdom stick with you.”

“Those things that you can spend hours doing at home the wrong way 40 times and not realize why, and then you get in here and Steve asks, ‘Why are you rolling your wrist?’ Those little things you don’t learn from a book,” Lammers said.

The environment of Pioneer Hall was a lesson in itself for the young student, who Steve calls a “fair rat.” Lammers said being there taught him history as well as blacksmithing, learning to solve modern problems through the old ways.

“Iron sharpens iron, and two people who know enough about something brings out the best in each other,” Lammers said.

New legacy As momentum increases, former Maytag facilities breathe new life

O

ne of the greatest joys for Kim Didier is when others can see Newton’s vision for Legacy Plaza.

As the executive director of Des Moines Area Community College Business Resources and project manager of the redevelopment of the former Maytag facility, Didier was tasked with introducing Marty Duffy to this “vision,” a vacant space which would later become the home of The Cellar Peanut Pub, Newton’s first craft beer bar.

Before Duffy decided to drive 30 miles from his Pella-based bar to the heart of Newton and view Legacy Plaza in person, he had convinced himself he did not want to own two locations again.

Duffy was pleased with the growth his Pella establishment had earned since its addition to the Dutch commu-

nity in 2012, 10 years after he initially opened The Cellar Peanut Pub in Oskaloosa. Garnering accolades from Food Network and the New York City Wine & Food Festival, as well high praise from critics at CraftBeer.com, who named The Cellar Peanut Pub as the best bar in Iowa in 2016 and 2018, the Midwestern pub has secured its status as a premier hotspot for beer connoisseurs.

Despite his reservations owning and operating a second business, Duffy entertained the idea and found himself walking alongside Didier for a tour of the space.

Admittedly, Duffy did not know much about the town or the former Maytag Corporation headquarters and its now pivotal role in growing Newton’s economy.

Subsequently, the two ultimately decided a Newton-based bar in Building 2 of Legacy Plaza, announcing the new addition June 15 on the The Cellar Peanut Pub’s Facebook page.

“It’s a beautiful campus, and we just want to be part of it,” Duffy said. “(Didier) was fabulous. She showed us the whole campus. She showed us the opportunities that we could do and she was very transparent with us. It was a feel-good moment … I’m really excited about this Newton project.”

Expecting to open late September or early October, the Cellar Peanut Pub is the most recent addition to Legacy Plaza, a section of town comprised of the former Maytag corporate headquarters, which closed its doors in 2007. With a collection of buildings left behind by the appliance manufacturer, which now belong to DMACC, the task of redeveloping the eight structures and 482,000 square feet of space has been left to Didier and her staff.

northernmost structures on the property, which she refers to as the Historic Maytag Event Complex, has been rented out for board meetings, trainings, weddings and anniversary parties, among other things.

Upon the opening of The Cellar Peanut Pub, Didier said there will be eight businesses total occupying space in Legacy Plaza. Several of the new leases, she said, have adopted space on the fifth floor of Building 18. Occupying the second floor of that facility is a contact center for Aureon, a business and support solutions company Didier said has been on campus for at least 10 years, remains the longest occupying business in Legacy Plaza.

“Our planning process has been a working process,” Didier said. “As we accepted the (buildings in 2016), we did so in a role as a community partner, stepping up and helping the community as a whole retain ownership and have some community planning around the reuse of these buildings.”

Didier is starting to see progress.

During an Aug. 6 Newton City Council meeting, Didier briefly updated the council on the five new Legacy Plaza leases that started in July 1: The Cellar Peanut Pub, a bar specializing in craft

beer selections and award-winning Bloody Marys; Aerocare, a medical supply company whose Newton location marks the business’ first Iowa-based operation; Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS), an Iowa State University industry research and assistance institute; Kwik Star/Kwik Trip, which is renting offices as the company starts to hire for its facility currently under construction east of town; and Re-Wire Yoga Studio.

The former Maytag employee noticed a shift in momentum near July. The goal, Didier said, for the past year and a half has been to create a neighborhood and to get people on campus to walk the courtyard, see the shape and quality of buildings and watch the economic growth happening in real time. People seem to have become more aware of Legacy Plaza and its plight, which Didier said has been a tipping point.

“It’s a combination of getting the word out in all kinds of different ways and using resources like our commercial brokers. A lot of it, too, is just having community members aware and having them get the word out, too,” she said. “For those of us who worked at

Goals

The aesthetics and history these buildings have are why Didier said the location has been renamed Legacy Plaza.

The goal of the redevelopment is to turn this section of Newton into a destination, eventually combining it with the vibrancy and foot traffic of the downtown district.

For Rachel Braafhart, owner and lead instructor of ReWire Yoga Studio, the location of her business provides a unique character to the facility, one that she said is hard to find in other yoga studios. She lets the space along speak for itself.

“A lot of times you have to bring in a lot of decorations and you have to be really intentional with how you’re decorating to create this ambiance, whereas moving to this space, I really didn’t have to do a whole lot,” Braafhart said.

“There was already this solid, sturdy, safe kind of feeling to the building.”

fore moving into her suite inside an old storage space in Building 2, Braafhart felt welcomed and encouraged to move in and begin classes and regularly offer yoga practices to Newtonians.

“It’s been a really exciting opportunity to be a part of bringing life back into the buildings, and I think people really appreciate that,” she said. “They appreciate that there are businesses coming in.”

In addition to finding new businesses to lease in the available facilities, another key strategy is to add market-rate housing to Building 16, the brick building located south of Buildings 1 and 2, which Didier said has garnered significant interest from developers. With housing and businesses sharing space under one roof, transforming Legacy Plaza into a neighborhood and an extension of downtown has become all the more plausible.

“I find it very exciting and rewarding to find ways to reuse these buildings,” Didier said. “They have great historical significance and have a lot of value that we can still benefit from as a community. I know it can be sad for some people to walk through the campus who used to work here and worked for a long time. Nothing good happens to an empty building, so it’s always really exciting when we get activities in it.”

New Baxter superintendent right at home Name: Dr. Mickolyn Clapper Profession: Superintendent of Baxter Community School District Education: Undergraduate degree in biology from Iowa State University; Masters in education leadership and policy studies; Doctorate in educational leadership from Drake University Clappers path to Baxter Originally from Algona, she came to the city in 1996 after marrying her husband, Trent, who is a native of Baxter.

Clapper’s first teaching position was in the Colfax-Mingo school district as a middle school science and TAG teacher.

After five years at C-M, she moved on to the Colo-NESCO district where she taught high school biology. A few years later, the elementary principal position opened up in Colo-NESCO and Clapper was selected for the job.

Clapper then moved on to the Nevada School District to serve as assistant elementary principal and special education director.

“It was a bit bigger, and I got a new experience,” Clapper said. “It was an excellent experience.”

While at Nevada, the Baxter Superintendent position became available and after interviewing July 30, Clapper was selected out of 22 candidates for the position and started just a week later on Aug. 6.

“For me, it was perfect timing when this position opened up,” Clapper said.

Already in familiar territory, Clapper had already been “working” in the district as it served as the research project for her dissertation during the pursuit of the doctorate degree. Her focus was on why Baxter has such high open enrollment numbers.

“I talked with parents of kids who open enrolled, administrator and community members, I was just looking at what makes this place special,” Clapper said.

“It is a great little school, but they just have exceptionally high open enrollment in. One out of every four kids chooses to come here, something is happening to get then to come here.”

Ready to get started Since Clapper has been in Baxter for more than 20 years, she knows most of the community as a mom and not a professional. In her new position, she is ex-

cited for citizens to get to know her professional side, along with being a mom to children Courtney, Will and Trice.

“To see me in a different light will be exciting and to work in my hometown,” Clapper said. “I love my job, and I love working with kids, but this is different, this is working for the kids, my own kids and the kids I have grown up loving.

These are kids I know are care about, they are my people.”

Getting down to business As the school year gets underway, the district is looking to address the aged areas of the building through a possible bond issue. With experience under her belt working on a previous bond in 2004, Clapper is

excited about the possibilities the building project could bring for the school.

“I think we could really make a huge impact on the kids with new spaces,” Clapper said. “They have done a great job taking care of what we have but it is time.”

Homecoming Most of all, Clapper is glad to be in her own community leading the school into the future.

“I’m most excited just to be able to lead this district. It is a great district and they are doing so many good things. Just getting to be a part of that is really exciting,” Clapper said.

Part of that strategy includes holding regular “beer schools” at the pub. The schools are conducted by different craft brewers, who’ll meet with the customers at the pub. Guests will have a chance to sample all of the company’s offerings while learning more about the beer they’re drinking.

“It’s basically to educate you on craft beer,” Duffy said. “We’re all beer nerds here.”

While the Peanut Cellar Pub won’t be serving food, other than their namesake roasted peanuts, Duffy encourages guests to bring in their own food or order in.

Customers at the Pella location can order from neighboring George’s Pizza and Steakhouse, Duffy said he’s hoping to build a relationship in Newton with Giovanni’s Pizza.

Pizza won’t be the only option at the Newton location. Every Friday and Saturday night a rotating cast of food trucks will be waiting to serve customers in the parking lot.

Sweet treat ​Sugar Street Sweets restaurant and bakery gaining popularity in Kellogg A

fatal accident three years ago that inspired the growth of an up-and-coming place to eat in Kellogg’s small downtown district.

Brian Shryock was 33 years old when he died in a cave-in accident in Story City three years ago. His parents, Lance and Jana, knew their son wanted to run his own restaurant and bakery. Today, Brian’s parents have entered their second year running that business, keeping their son’s dream alive.

Sugar Street Sweets, 221 High St. in Kellogg, started July 6, 2017, and is slowly attracting new customers after 13 months in business.

Both Lance and Jana had experience growing their own food, selling it at farmers markets and knew they could use the produce from their vegetable farm in Colfax for the past eight years. They came across a building in Kellogg that once housed a catering business, and their Realtor helped them purchase the building for the restaurant.

The food offered at the restaurant features tenderloin, chicken Marsala and other home-cooked meals.

The restaurant’s bakery and cafe section feature pies, homemade bread, cookies and doughnuts.

Besides Lance and Jana, the restaurant employs three other staff members as cooks and waiters. One of the employees, Jaylee Christy, works there as a server three days per week during the summer. Christy, a 15-yearold Kellogg resident, said she was visiting Kellogg Historical Museum when she saw a help wanted sign and applied.

“It worked out because it’s my first job and it’s easy,” Christy said. “I’ve done cooking and cleaning before, and I get to do that here. I’ve told my friends and family about (where I work) and they’re starting to come here.”

The restaurant is closed Sunday through Tuesday, but opens at 8 a.m. during the rest of the week and stays open through the early afternoon.

So far, the most fruitful ways customers have discovered the restaurant is when they first visit the Kellogg museum across the street. Jo Olson, Kellogg Historical Museum board member, said she recently had a class reunion at the restaurant and everyone was satisfied with their meals.
