Join us for our monthly stewardship project to learn about the tallgrass prairie reconstruction while doing a task to help bring back the prairie. The activity involves helping with the refuge’s native prairie greenhouse

program.

A volunteer project occurs on the second Saturday of each month and projects vary according to the season. Children under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign a volunteer service agreement in order to help.

Volunteers need to wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and long pants. It is recommend volunteers bring insect repellent, sunscreen and drinking water. To pre-register or for additional information, please call 515-994-3400.

A heartfelt honor Charlie Gundram named Park Centre’s first Citizen of the Year Park Centre’s highest honor is its Citizen of the Year award. This is bestowed to a resident who goes above and beyond to help other.

Staff, residents and community members came together late last year to present Charlie Gundram the inaugural award. Originally from Council Bluffs, Gundram moved to Knoxville at the age of seven. There, he was diagnosed with polio. Years later he moved to Newton and after it became difficult to navigate the stairs in his home, he moved to Park Centre in 2017.

“I like this place a lot. The people in here are all like family,” Gundram said.

Employees at Park Centre had started to take notice of how residents interact with each other and those who make an impact in the community.

“Throughout the year we see the difference that residents make not only at Park Centre but throughout our community and decided that it was about time we started honoring them,” Park Centre Marketing Director Margot Voshell said. “Last year, we decided that it would be a great time to start this.”

Gundram was looked at for the inspiring behavior he exhibits. Gundram said he quilts fidget squares when he can. He also likes to bake cakes for the birthday parties among many other activities.

“If somebody needs something I help them,” Gundram said.

work to help those around him.

“I help them when I can and when I have a problem they help me,” Gundram said For the inaugural year, residents, staff and community members met in the Garden Room to have a special recognition party with cake and guest speakers who told those gathered about how much Gundram meant to them.

“He was right there with all of us and I am thinking, ‘I love this man,’” resident Artis Morgan said. “I am fortunate to have lived right down the hall from this very special person.”

Morgan had the pleasure of announcing Gundram as the winner of the award, which was met with applause from the audience. The speeches didn’t end there. Next up to talk about her experience with Gundram was Mary Douds of Marshalltown. Douds spoke about the many things Gundram does for people including making blankets for hospitals and how Gundram was a friend to her father, Don Lane, when they were neighbors in Park Centre.

“Charlie Gundram is one-of-a-kind. He was a faithful friend to our dad. Always willing to help and care for him.

Before dad passed away, he told Charlie he was part of our family and we

all agreed,” Douds said.

After the announcement, Gundram was brought to tears for receiving the honor.

“It’s absolutely mind blowing ... I love helping people and I think that’s what I was put on earth for is to help where I could,” Gundram said.

There were many memories shared about the 2019 Park Centre Citizen of the Year winner but one particular set of words said by Park Centre resident Jean Cleere who first met Gundram at a dinner summed up the early afternoon party: “I love you, Charlie.”

Recipe for success Success of Gezellig Brewing Company continues to grow with barely a year under its belt Someone ought to buy the staff at Gezellig Brewing Company a drink.

They sure as heck deserve it for the amount of success the Newton-based microbrewery has achieved in less than a year.

After an explosive opening in June 2019, the Dutch-inspired taproom maintained its strong momentum with customers piling through the doors to try a menu of wholesome suds. Betsy Duffy, who co-owns Gezellig Brewing Company with Mindi Vanden Bosch, said it has been a “whirlwind” of an experience.

From the very start the brewery was — and still is — constantly teasing new brews with farfetched descriptions. Before the taproom was even open for

business, Gezellig beer was making its way onto taps throughout central Iowa. Many had been selling very well at the Iowa Taproom in Des Moines.

Securing Grant Heuer as head brewer only benefitted the fledgling brewery. With his experience brewing beer in Southern California, Heuer had big ideas for Gezellig. If the brewers could formulate wild-yet-cozy flavor profiles in their regularly rotating menu, then they would note it as a win.

“Grant is always brewing beer, and with his creativity the brew schedule is always changing,” Duffy said. “That is something that I had always hoped for: for Gezellig Brewing to continually crank out new, fun, quality

beers.”

Strong customer support has been Gezellig’s strong suit. In an online poll by KCCI 8 News last year, Gezellig was voted the best Iowa brewery.

The Newton taproom garnered 933 votes in KCCI’s poll, beating out hard hitters like Peace Tree Brewing Co. It’s important to note Gezellig was only open one month Continued to pg 17

When a person has a passion for their craft, it shows on their face and in their voice whenever it is brought up. Kim Jenkins, owner of Blossom and Vine, is one of those people you can just tell is in love what they do. From explaining clients wishes to giving tips of how to arrange flowers and greenery, the energy she has about what she is creating is contagious, even for those without a green thumb.

Jenkins has always had a love for flowers and gardening but it wasn’t until the planning started on her son’s wedding that she thought of it as more than a hobby.

“When Dane and Molly were getting married I decided to grow some flowers for their wedding,” Jenkins said. “It just took off from there.”

While the flowers grown for the wedding didn’t turn out due to a late frost, Jenkins had the itch to turn her hobby into a home business. After taking a few classes and researching

different ideas and methods, she was ready to offer her skills to the public.

“I can do anything. I’ve done several weddings, all of the pieces, the bridal bouquet, bridesmaids bouquet, boutonnières, corsages, center pieces for the tables and big pieces for the ceremony,” Jenkins said. “Also, centerpieces of a variety for events, funeral sprays, memory arrangements, Valentine’s Day, birthdays, anniversaries. Just about anything. And, of course, prom.”

The entire process of the first consultation with the client to selecting the perfect flowers and greenery and watching the pieces come together are all exciting to Jenkins. Each project is a new challenge and an opportunity to create a beautiful memory for someone.

Strengthening

Filling retail space along town squares is Maintaining a vibrant downtown is a goal communities in Jasper County constantly work toward, but it becomes increasingly difficult when storefronts start to disappear.

Empty window displays collect dust. Doors are always locked. Facades rapidly decay. It’s an uphill battle, and it’s one that will take some time to overcome. Still, communities aren’t going down without a fight.

Over the past few years, the town square storefronts in Prairie City have begun to fill up.

Chad Alleger, mayor of Prairie City, said an individual has recently purchased three locations on the west side of the square that had remained vacant for many years.

There are hopes to renovate those areas into apartments, a co-working space and maybe a small cafe.

Several factors play into a downtown marketplace’s success. Alleger said population growth through housing developments will help draw more people to their local retailers and shops in Prairie City, for instance. It may also allow for a more steady economy in the town square.

“The struggle we have living so close to Des Moines is the fact a majority of the population in town, that’s where they get all their local services,” Alleger said. “The faster we can get a population increase in town to help those businesses succeed will be a benefit to the community.”

Losing those local businesses has a tremendous impact on a small town. When Roberts Bros. True Value closed in November 2018 after 90 years of business, it left a gap in the community since it was the only hardware store in town.

Roberts Bros. was utilized by both Prairie City and Monroe customers.

“When they closed their business, it had an affect on more than just Prairie City,” Alleger said. “There were other businesses in the surrounding area that used Roberts Bros. for local needs. It’s one of those things you don’t realize how important it was to have until you needed something.”

Downtowns a challenge for Jasper County communities What determines the longevity of a business is a rather complicated matter. Infrastructure obviously plays a big part. A number of downtown buildings in Jasper County are historically preserved, making some renovations difficult. Others are in rough shape and need time, effort and money invested into them.

How to go about filling empty storefronts is another challenge for towns. Erin Yeager, executive director of Newton Main Street, said there are nine empty storefronts in the downtown district. (Granted, a number of those became vacant after political campaigns packed up shop after caucuses.)

Filling those spaces requires people like Yeager, Newton Economic Development Specialist Craig Armstrong and Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Amanda Price, and other organizations like the Newton Development Corporation, to actively search for potential leasers.

“That’s how Impress Bridal came here in the first place when they were here. They were found in Ankeny and asked if they wanted to have a second location,” Price said.

Still, Impress Bridal had to close its Newton location, stating it was not able to survive and maintain its footprint in town. The store was only open

for about two years. Clearly, it takes more than just finding another retailer. A business plan needs to be in place, marketing efforts should be instilled and there has to be a demand for services.

Having a variety of stores in a downtown district is good, too, Yeager said. But having similar stores benefits the community as well. In Newton, for example, Fine Things Reclaimed and The Farmer’s Wife offer similar home decor trinkets (albeit with different styles). Yet the two stores still prosper.

“It’s OK to have competition,” Price said.

In order for these small business owners to thrive, people have to shop local, Yeager said.

“If you don’t support your local people, they’re going to leave,” Yeager said.

Continued • pg 11 prior to the poll results. As of February, KCCI issued another Facebook poll for the best Central Iowa brewery; Gezellig has garnered several hundred votes and has placed highly in the standings.

Probably the brewery’s biggest accomplishment was its silver medal wins at the 2019 Great American Beer Festival, the world’s largest commercial beer competition.

After only being open for a few months, Gezellig earned high honors for its All The Goodness and Hug Deal Gone Sideweiss brews.

Soon after Gezellig earned its silver medal wins, Duffy was recognized by the Newton Development Corporation for the brewery’s hit-the-ground-running success. She received the Jim Tyler Entrepreneurial Award during NDC’s Salute to Business and Industry luncheon in October 2019.

Gezellig also works well with others. The taproom regularly hosts visiting food trucks, events and live music.

This type of business model works well for the brewery, and for the other folks involved. Food trucks, for instance, have sold out of menu items on numerous occasions.

Duffy knows how beer tourism can really draw people “from even hundreds of miles away.” It also keeps the die hard Gezellig supporters coming back for what they love, she said.

What’s next for Gezellig?

“Next month our kegs will begin being distributed by a smaller local distributor in the Central Iowa area. While we will still be delivering our kegs by ourselves to some areas, this will hopefully allow us more time to be in the market, talking to beer buyers and to customers about Gezellig,” Duffy said.

There is another “daunting adventure” Gezellig is working on but is being kept under wraps until plans are finalized.

“Needless to say we continue to stay busy and we are still having fun,” Duffy said.

She has also learned a few lessons along the way, including a wedding day must.

“I learned early on, the day of the wedding, you want to know ahead of time who to talk to, because you don’t want to talk to the bride,” Jenkins said. “The bride doesn’t want to be bothered with anything that will stress her out.”

Rainbow Service Station

By Larry Hurto Newton Historic Preservation Commission & Main Street Design Committee On Apr. 7, 1922, it was announced that the Knights of Pythias lodge had leased its lot located one block east of the public square on U. S. Highway No. 32 to R. H. Bailey. According to The Newton Daily News, the lodge effected the razing of a feed shed that had occupied the property for the purpose of Bailey’s erection of a new oil station.

“Mr. Bailey has purchased tanks which will provide a capacity of 22,400 gallons of gasoline and 11,200 gallons of kerosene,” the announcement story said. “He will handle lubricating oils in addition to gasoline and kerosene.

“Mr. Bailey says he contemplates making a mighty nice corner of the location which now can not be described as a beauty spot of Newton.

The filling station will be the very latest word in constructions of this kind. He also contemplates putting 24

out flowers and shrubbery which will add greatly to the appearance of the corner. The station will have a ladies’ rest room.

“It is understood that Mr. Bailey contemplates devoting his personal attention to the business.”

Roy Harlan Bailey was born on a farm near Valeria June 23, 1880, the son of John and Nancy Bailey. He was raised in that neighborhood and attended rural schools. He later studied at a Des Moines business college.

In 1908, he was elected as a Republican Jasper County Recorder. He moved to Newton that same year. He served two terms as recorder from 1909 to 1913.

At the close of his second term, Bailey became farm loan man for the Jasper County Savings Bank. The 1920 City Directory lists him as secretary-treasurer of the Newton Foundry

Co. and financial manager of Newton Realty Co. Research by Newton Historic Preservation Commissioners Rita Reinheimer and Mary Jo Niskin indicates the Rainbow was the third gas station built in Newton and the first to have a water hose on its driveway.

“Work is progressing nicely on the Rainbow Service Station which is being constructed by R. H. Bailey just across the street south from E. J. Miles and company,” the Newton Daily News reported on May 11.

“Mr. Bailey is planning on installing a number of new features when he opens his station.

“In talking with a newspaper reporter Thursday morning Mr. Bailey said he planned on putting in a crank case service. He will see to it that the crank case is drained, cleaned and filled with oil, and will charge only Spring 2020 • Jasper County Living

the oil. In other words, the service of the case will all be free.

Mr. Bailey will keep a card index of every car on which crank case service is rendered and will be able to tell a car owner when the case should be given attention again. The owner of the car will not have to worry any thing about this, as Mr. Bailey will keep a record of the date of the service and will watch the speedometer for the number of miles which the car has traveled since the last service.

“This is something new locally,” the Daily News declared, “and Mr. Bailey, in speaking of it, said the people here were entitled to this service just the same as people of the larger cities.

“In commenting on this service, Mr. Bailey pointed out that the oil expense is the smallest in the operation of a car. If a good grade of oil is used, such expense will probably not cost to exceed $30 a year. If this matter is given proper attention, large sums of money in repair bills will be saved, he says.

“An air tower has been purchased for the Rainbow which will keep the air tube off the ground entirely, thus keeping the tube absolutely clean at all times. A woman can fill a tire with air from this air tower without fear of soiling her clothes. Of course, this air service is free also.

“Still another service that Mr. Bailey is going to install which will be greatly appreciated by motorists will be that of taking gas to cars stranded in the country and no charge will be made for the service whatever, the car owner paying only for the gas which he purchases. Lives there a car owner who has not at some time or other in his life found himself in the country and not a drop of gas in his car? It is for just such people that Mr. Bailey is installing his new service. All a driver will need to do will be to telephone the Rainbow, out will come a car with the needed gas, and it will ... cost no more than if the gas had been purchased right at the station.”

On June 29, manager Bailey announced that a parking lot had been installed just behind the filling station.“This parking space is free for all and the management desires the public to make use of it,” the Daily News reported.

“Such a place is something of a variety in Newton as about the only space here to park cars is along the square,” the paper continued. “No doubt this new venture will prove very popular.”

to the Dutch Mill Service Company, of Knoxville, was announced. The Daily News said Dr. F. L. Smith, the owner at that time, made the sale because other business interests made it impossible for him “to devote his time to the management of the oil company.”

The 1929 City Directory listed Dutch Mill Service Co.Ralph S. Eland, manager, gasoline, oils, etc.

In 1931, the old Dutch Mill station was taken over by the White Eagle Oil Corp., a subsidiary of the Standard Oil Company of New York. Eland and J. E. Roberts subsequently erected the Fairway station on the corner of First Avenue East and East Third Street North In 1938, the business was leased by Raymond B. “Lefty” Sprague, who operated his Mobilgas Service Station there until he retired about 1980.

After the service station closed, the building was remodeled into retail and office space in 1983-84.

For nearly 20 years, the former service bays at the west end of the building were occupied by Cardinal Trophies & Awards; the office space on the east was home to the Des Moines Register’s regional newspaper subscription/distribution office, and, later, a beauty salon.

Since 2002, the entire building has been home to Trenz Hair Studio, Kelly Van Wyk, owner. Interior remodeling was done at that time to convert the building for a single occupant.

Spring has sprung in Colfax

By Stuart Patterson Colfax Main Street Director After this long and gray winter, we’re excited at Colfax Main Street for spring to arrive in Downtown Colfax. Our busy local volunteers have begun planning for our spring and early summer events that you may want to put on your calendar.

On Saturday, April 11, Colfax Main Street will be hosting the Spring Market and Eggstravaganza at the Colfax-Mingo Elementary School near Downtown Colfax, 20 W. Broadway St. The Eggstravaganza is a free Easter egg hunt for kids ages 1-13 that will be happening at 10 a.m., weather pending, please check our social media pages and website colfaxmainstreet.com for updates.

Eggstravaganza was a huge hit last year with around 200 local participants. Inside the elementary school, come shop our Spring Market happening from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. where local craft and product vendors will be selling their goods.

That Saturday is also a Second Saturday in downtown Colfax, which is a few blocks away. Colfax’s great local vintage stores, boutiques and restaurants will be open and waiting for you to check out.

Also mark your calendars June 27 for Mineral Springs Day in Colfax.

Mineral Springs Day is Colfax’s local

celebration of our community. In the morning, participate or watch The Paddle Skedaddle, which is a 2-mile kayak and 3.5-mile trail walk/run happening at Quarry Springs Park, one mile north of town on Walnut Street, behind Kum & Go.
