Jasper County Fair to host inaugural barbecue contest, tasting July 16

By Kate Malott Newton Daily News The Jasper County Fair will host its inaugural Blue Ribbon BBQ Cookoff Saturday at the Jasper County Fairgrounds in Colfax.

Jasper County Fair board members Dan Wasson and Sondra Kenney, both of Mingo, are event organizers who discussed hosting a barbecue with fellow board members because they knew it was a trendy thing to do.

They decided to host it the first Saturday of the fair on the south side of the property, near the big tent.

“There’s not a lot going on the first day and we thought it would bring some extra people out,” Kenney said.

There are around 12 registered competition participants from around the county including Colfax and Newton, and around central Iowa including Russell, Ankeny and Des Moines.

“This being our first year, we were hoping for maybe a half dozen, so when we hit 10 we were excited,” Kenney said.

Each team will consist of a team captain (chief cook) and as many assistants as the team captain deems necessary, not to exceed five people per team. Chief cooks and/or assistants may only cook for their designated team at this contest.

Set up will begin at 6 a.m.

and each team will be assigned a 10 x 20 foot cooking space. Team captains will meet at 7:30 a.m. to review the rules, judging procedures and to address any questions or concerns.

Each team will receive one 5 to 6 pound beef brisket, one 7 to 8 pound pork shoulder/butt, two whole chickens and two racks of spare ribs. Meet will be distributed at 8 a.m.

Judging is in the following order: chicken at 4:30 p.m., ribs at 5 p.m., pork shoulder/butt at 5:30 p.m. and brisket at 6 p.m. Each team must compete in all four categories.

The public is invited to taste remaining meat following judging with proof of paid admission. Admission is $5 with proceeds going back to the Jasper County Fair.

“We think it will be a good mix of people, and next year, if it’s a success, we will continue and keep it going,” Kenney said.

All fires must be put out and all equipment removed from the site by 10 p.m.

A cash prize and trophy will be given to the winner of each category and a Grand Champion award will be determined based on cumulative points. First place in all four categories will receive $150 and second place $75. Grand Champion will receive $200.

A dream come true for Jasper County Fair Queen

Jasper County has new royalty. Newton’s Emily Miller was crowned Jasper County Fair Queen during the Jasper County Round-Up event on June 25.

“When it was placed on my head, I was so shocked.

I had a big cheering section, so I kind of knew when they got loud, but I had to feel on my head to make sure it was on there,” Miller said. “It was so exciting, I was kind of shaking because I couldn’t believe it.”

Miller, who is the daughter of Rick and Kimberly Miller, will be a senior at Newton High School in the fall. She has been involved with 4-H and county fair events from a young age and this year decided to try for queen.

“It has kind of been a dream of mine since I was little,” Miller said. “My sister tried for queen about six years ago. She did not get queen, but her experience kind of helped me to understand what the fair queen experience was about.”

While Miller found the interview process fun and interesting, meeting the seven other girls vying for the position and gaining new friendships was the most rewarding part, she said.

“There were seven other girls, and they were all amazing. Having a fun

time with them and being spirited made the judging process less intimidating,” Miller said.

As the newly crowned queen, Miller will have additional responsibilities at the fair besides participating with 4-H projects and exhibiting her horses and swine.

She will share some of those responsbilities with newly crowed Jasper County Fair Princess Rachel Freland. Freland, who is from Prairie City, was also crowned at the ceremony on June 25 “I’m looking forward to being at every event and having the title with the princess. The princess is amazing, she is so nice and I am going to love interacting with her and being more involved in the fair,” Miller said. “I’ve always had a major involvement with the fair but being queen it is just that much more.”

When Miller isn’t working with her animals or on 4-H activities, she was heavily involved at school and in the community.

From the school’s swim team and marching band to participating in the National Honor Society and serving as vice president of the student council, Miller keeps a busy schedule all year round.

“I like to kind of switch up various activities throughout the year. Outside of school, I love to be involved in my church and community through community service and in

my free time I love hanging out with family and friends,” Miller said. “One of my favorite family activities is to go boating and to just be outside and enjoy life.”

Following the county fair, Miller will compete among 98 other girls for the title of Iowa State Fair Queen. The competition, which is held at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines will have stiff competition, but Miller is looking to enjoy the unique opportunity before her.

“I’m going to go and compete, but at the same time, I am just going to have fun with the experience and meet all of the girls,” Miller said. “I had heard that it is a one of a kind experience because you get to meet all these different girls from all over the state of Iowa.”

While Miller has many exciting opportunities before her, she is already beginning to make future plans once she has graduated.

“I really love math and science. 4-H has really opened my eyes to agriculture, so right now I’m planning on going into an agricultural field in math, science and business,” Miller said.

For now, Miller has many new and exciting opportunities in front of her as the 2016 Jasper County Fair Queen.

Just-for-fun competitions have no entry fees or prize money

By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News In the summer of 1986, Jasper County residents had something new at the local county fair.

Open classes at the fair is celebrating its 30th birthday this year, and fair volunteer Rhonda Guy is happy fairgoers are still taking advantage of the just-for-fun categories.

“It started out in 1986 as some-

thing else to involve more of the county in the fair,” Guy said. “It’s a connection between us all, through some of the activities we grew up with.”

The 30th anniversary of the first open-class competition will be commemorated at this year’s fair. At 3:45 p.m. on Sunday an event will be held at the fairgrounds to honor the anniversary, with light refreshments served. Past superintendents are in-

vited to join and share their memories with those gathered.

Guy said the idea began with the Baxter Garden Club asking directors for a way to get some of its items displayed publicly at the fair. The first year’s open-class competition was modestly sized, but it grew to 11 divisions by the following year, 1987.

For this year’s open classes, there are 24 divisions, including gardening, flowers and photography and a

whole division devoted to LEGOs building sets. Special events like the Little Squealers Pig Show and horseshoe pitching tournament are also planned.

All open classes are just-for-run competitions have no entry fees or prize money. These can be found in the cream-colored pages of the fair book.

30 years at the fair Open Class Continued from Page 8 “We had more than 1,000 participants last year, so everyone gets involved,” Guy said. “It’s probably one of the biggest open-classes fairs in central Iowa. I think the lack of entry fees and premiums drive that. It’s just for fun. No pressure.”

The Fun Pet Show, set for noon

on Saturday under the large tent on the fairgrounds lawn, is one of the most unpredictable events of the open classes, Guy said.

“You never know what animals people are going to bring out for that,” she said.

Guy said there are even some second- and third-generation participants in open classes at the fair. She said the slogan “Old 4-Hers never die, they just move on to open class” is commonly heard among fair participants.

“It’s kept growing, and there are a lot of open-classes events you won’t see many other places,” Guy said.

“It’s really found its niche.”

Anniversary Party

Open Classes at the Jasper County Fair show the talents and imagination of all our county residents.

This year the Open Class Divisions are hosting an Anniversary Party on Sunday in the Open Class Building.

Organizers will serve light refreshments at 3:30 p.m. and there will be a short walk down Memory Lane at 3:45 p.m.

All past superintendents are invited to see how far we have come and also recognize their own contributions to this enduring tradition of the Jasper County Fair.

The fair board wants to make sure future generations have an idea what and who the fair has been made of in the past. There are many memories out

there from county fair days gone by.

If you have memories you would like to share with others in any way, let organizers know.

Your pictures, books, projects, newspaper articles, ribbons, posters, tickets — even written memories of your favorite time at the fair — you name it, organizers want to display it.

Higher number of poultry exhibitors register as bird flu scare ends

By Mike Mendenhall Newton Daily News PRAIRIE CITY — Inside a red and white-striped barn on Highway 117 between Colfax and Prairie City, brothers Jerod and Jordon DeVries feed roughly 50 chickens they’re breeding for the Jasper County and Iowa State fairs.

They have a mix of layer, pullet and broiler chickens separated into different open air coups, plucking from mini troughs and feeders.

Each bird is in the 19-yearold Jerod’s custom feed program.

The birds will mature at eight weeks and will not be fully developed by the county fair, but the intent is to have the chickens ready for the big competition at the Iowa State Fair in August. However, Jerod is still confident they’ll do well in Colfax. He understands when to feed at the proper protein ratios.

“We have the pullets over there, and they haven’t started laying yet,” he said.

“When they start laying, we’ll put those with the layer batch. So we might show them a little underweight yet at the county fair, but we still do fairly well because I’m pretty good with knowing how to feed them right and the certain criteria involved in the broilers. You try to have the broilers on full feed at all times. They have a certain combination we use to make them above and beyond our competitors.”

But this year, the DeVries family is happy just to be able to enter birds for competition at any Iowa fair.

The 2016 Jasper County Fair will see the return of poultry showing after an outbreak of Avian Influenza caused the State of Iowa to issue a blanket ban on ex-

hibiting live birds. According to the Iowa Department of Agriculture, the state saw 77 sites and more than 31.5 million poultry units affected by the epidemic in 2015.

The ban on live poultry exhibition issued to contain the spread of the HPA1 strain was lifted Jan. 1. This was good news for county fairs statewide, where live exhibiting is the lifeblood.

Renae and Dan Tool have been the poultry superintendents of the Jasper County Fair for three years, and their family has been raising birds for nearly 20 years. As of the May 16 deadline, Renae said exhibitors have registered 202 birds for this year’s county fair. This is above average. According to the Iowa State University Extension Office in Newton, the fair usually sees 150 to 175 birds register.

Renae said she believes the absence of poultry affected the attendance of last year’s county fair. “There were a lot of families that we didn’t see last year that we normally would,” she said.

Poultry is not just chicken and turkey, but includes other types of fowl such as duck, wild pheasant, peacock and quail.

“We’re pretty excited that poultry is coming back to the fair,” Renae said. “The nice thing about poultry is, for the younger kids, it’s a good place for them to start.

It’s easier for them to handle.

It’s a cheaper animal for kids to feed and take care of. It doesn’t take a huge farm to raise a chicken.”

Poultry Continued from Page 11 To supplement the loss of live birds in 2015, Renae and Dan encouraged showers to construct informational posters about chicken, turkey and other poultry. Exhibitors took photographs of their birds on the farm and displayed them on the fair grounds where the coups would have been.

Four showers also held a cook-off — smoking, frying or grilling their favorite poultry for fans and official judges. Renae said the kids who did participate enjoyed the alternative, but the lack of live exhibits kept many kids away from the fair.

“It was sad not to see those 4-Hers at the fair, and at that point a lot of them didn’t have another livestock animal to show.”

On their family farm in rural Monroe, Renae’s son 13-year-old son Colby is preparing six birds to exhibit in the 2016 county fair. It’s less than what the PCM Middle School student would usually show, but Renae said he’s going for quality over quantity with his mix of rooster and hen chickens.

For the DeVries brothers back in rural Prairie City, the bird flu epidemic cut into more than just blue ribbons in their bedrooms.

“With the avian bird flu, were weren’t allowed to get any broilers or order any chickens.

It kind of put us down in profits,” Jerod said.

“With our broilers, we trying to make some money on it. Needless to say, when we didn’t get them, we weren’t as profitable.”

In a normal year Jerod and Jordon will each get 50 birds. On average they will lose three each year to heat stroke or leg problems, which eats into profits but is expected and can be factored into a budget. But when they were not allowed to purchase a single bird, it presented a problem for the young farmers. With an age 21 cutoff for FFA participation, Jerod is thankful the ban didn’t extend into 2016.

“I’m excited because I only have about two years left of doing this. I’ve been placing third at state in that State Fair broiler contest every year I’ve been doing it, except for one,” Jerod said. “I want to get into second or first at ISF so I can get in the Parade of Champions. I think that would be a great experience.”
