Wake Up Your Breakfast With California Avocados (NAPSA)-They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. What better way to start your morning off than with a delicious dish featuring fresh California avocados? With nearly 20 vitamins and minerals, avocados provide beneficial “good fats” to help you perform your best at work, school or wherever you may go. Plus, they add a velvety texture and unbeatable flavor to any breakfast-whether it’s on-the-go or a casual get-together with friends. Los Angeles-based chef Neal Fraser of BLD(r), Fritzi Dog(r), Redbird and The Strand House(r) has partnered with the California Avocado Commission to share one of his favorite California avocado

breakfast recipes. “I enjoy cooking with California avocados, as they bring a great mild flavor to any dish,” said Fraser. “So, it’s just natural for me to add it to my favorite meal of the day-breakfast.” For a quick breakfast that will keep you going all morning, Fraser recommends spreading creamy avocados on whole grain toast, adding it to your favorite smoothie or folding chunks of avocados into freshly scrambled eggs. If you have a more relaxed breakfast planned, try Fraser’s Chilaquiles de California Avocado recipe. For even more inspiration and other California avocado breakfast recipes, visit CaliforniaAvocado.com/ avocados-for-breakfast.

Helping Children Succeed In School (NAPSA)-The first five years of life are the years of learning that shape kids’ futures, child care experts advise. That’s why health screenings are so crucial to future success-and why many parents are pleased to learn about an easy and effective way to make sure their little ones are ready for school. Free access to an online health screening for kids 5 and under is available from Easter Seals. Parents and caregivers can take the online health survey and share the results with a pediatrician or other health care provider at well-baby checkups and back-to-school doctor visits. The screening takes about 20 minutes and

can show whether kids are meeting their milestones and are developing on track. Why It’s Important More than a million children with unidentified delays and disabilities enter school every year. These health issues put them far behind their peers and have a lasting, negative effect on their ability to meet their full potential. The good news: Kids with de_lays, disabilities and autism can make significant progress if they get support early in life. Explains Dr. Patricia Wright, National Director of Autism Ser_vices, Easter Seals: “Thanks to the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust, the Ages & Stages Questionnaires(r) [ASQ]

Raise your hand if your child is ready for school-an online test can help you tell. is now available on Easter Seals’ Make the First Five Count website to make sure children are achieving their developmental milestones during the important first five years of life and are ready for kindergarten-and what to do if they’re not.” As the nation’s largest nonprofit

provider of early intervention services, Easter Seals knows what’s possible when kids get the support they need... and what happens when they don’t. What Else You Can Do Regardless of how your youngsters develop, there are ways to help them develop a love of learning: • Read to them. In young children, it nurtures an interest in

language, words and communication. • Play word games. • Encourage children to write original stories and illustrate them with their own drawings. • Show them the value of math by making connections to everyday life with “teachable math moments,” from cutting slices of pizza to getting gas for the car. • Praise your children’s academic prog-

ress. Tell them that you are proud of their efforts. When students are confident in their abilities, they enjoy learning. Free Assessment Survey To help ensure your child is school ready, you can visit www.MaketheFirstFiveCount.org.

A Well-Thought-Out Kitchen (NAPSA)-Kitchens are becoming more than just a place to cook: According to the Research Institute for Cooking and Kitchen Intelligence, most families spend an average of 175 hours in the kitchen every month-cooking, entertaining, working and spending time together. Organizing your kitchen to meet your specific needs can make the time you spend there more enjoyable. Start by writing down how you use your kitchen and make a list of any inconveniences you notice. For example: a pile of shoes under the breakfast bar, stacks of mail on the kitchen table or no room for cookbooks. Once you have a better understanding of your needs, you can design a system that solves your organization

and storage problems. Tackle your list one item at a time. For example: Keep shoes out of the kitchen by placing a shoe organizer near the most commonly used entrance. Minimize mail clutter by creating a kitchen command center or keeping a mail organizer on the counter. Display cookbooks on shelves with decorative bookends. If you have an open floor plan or frequently entertain, you know people tend to congregate in the kitchen. Make family members and guests comfortable by providing plenty of seating. A built-in banquette maximizes seating around a kitchen table and provides a comfy place for guests to socialize while you cook. Even if you have a small kitchen, a rolling

island can be a helpful addition. Use it during dinner parties as a buffet or as a bar with an ice bucket, glasses and an assortment of cocktails. Keep cooking from turning into a chore by organizing your pantry and cabinets. For example, store pot holders, spatulas, measuring cups and spices near the stove. Cups should be kept in the cabinet closest to your refrigerator and plates and bowls near the dishwasher. If you have a pantry, invest in a storage system that maximizes space. A system such as ClosetMaid(r) ShelfTrack(r) has adjustable shelving, making room for items of various sizes. The system can also be customized with wire drawers, excellent for storing

The Jasper County Veterans Memorial Commission will be constructing two new veterans’ memorials which will be placed on the courthouse lawn. The first will serve as a memorial to all Jasper County vets and will be placed on the east side of the courthouse. It will be a ten ton stone on a 15x15 pedestal and will be painted with military themed murals. The second memorial will be located on the south side of the courthouse next to the current veteran’s memorial. It will hold over 350 bricks engraved with names in honor or memory of local veterans. Any Jasper County veteran who lived in the county when they joined, lives in the county currently, or is now serving active duty is eligible to have their name placed on a brick. A copy of your DD214 or honorable discharge papers will be required along with your application. The bricks will cost $100.00 each. The bricks will hold three lines with 15 letters/spaces on each line. (Inclusion in this project does not automatically qualify participants as veterans as defined under Iowa Code chapter 35)

As the role of the kitchen expands, it is becoming more important to maximize storage space to accommodate the needs of family and friends. (NAPSA)-The peak of hurricane season is just around the corner, bringing with it high winds, ex_treme rains, and flooding. In anticipation of this volatile weather, the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) is educating consumers about the electrical dangers that can result in the aftermath of severe storms and providing resources to help safely weather the storms this season. When re-entering your home after a storm, exercise extreme caution. keep your home electrically safe at the peak of severe weather season: Submerged Electrical Appliances • Take care when stepping into a flooded area and be aware that submerged outlets or electrical cords may energize the water, posing a potentially deadly trap. • Electrical items such as circuit breakers, fuses, GFCIs, receptacles, plugs and switches can malfunction when exposed to water and debris. Discard or replace them if they have been submerged. • Have an electrician inspect electrical appliances that have been wet and don’t turn on or plug in appliances unless an electrician has verified it is safe. Downed Power Lines • Always assume fallen power lines are energized. Stay at least

Consumers are also strongly encouraged to share these tips with older adults, who are among the most vulnerable populations during a state of emergency.
