Easy Tax Planning For A Bigger Refund (NAPSA)-If, like most people, you could use some extra money these days, consider this: Three out of four Americans get an income tax refund from the IRS, and the average directdeposited refund has totaled more than $2,800 for the last several years. Moving the needle above that average may be done with a little tax planning. “To see exactly where you still have opportunities to save, do a dry run of your federal tax return,” said TaxACT spokesperson Jessi Dolmage. “DIY solutions like TaxACT are already updated with tax law changes so you can estimate your taxes as early as October each year.” These hints can help you maximize your refund or
lower your tax liability. 1. Remember all your above-the-line adjustments, which are amounts you can deduct from your taxable income. They include college tuition and fees, educator expenses, moving expenses, alimony paid, contributions to a traditional IRA, student loan interest, and health insurance premiums if you’re selfemployed. 2. Maximize your itemized deductions. Those may include charitable gifts (cash and noncash, such as household items), unreimbursed medical expenses, job search expenses in your present occupation, tax preparation fees, mortgage interest and points paid, qualified mortgage insurance premiums,
and personal property and real estate taxes. If you’re not sure if you have enough deductions to itemize, tax software can calculate whether claiming the standard deduction or itemizing is more advantageous, with the results typically backed by a maximum refund guarantee. 3. Watch for these commonly missed tax credits, some of which are refundable: Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Child and Dependent Care Credit and Saver’s Credit. If you have college or other higher education expenses, don’t forget the American Opportunity and Lifetime Learning Credits. 4. Review your investments to see if offsetting capital gains with
Transitional Care Suites at Park Centre A WesleyLife Community in Newton
losses is appropriate for you. Keep in mind that your tax rate on longterm capital gains may be lower than your rate on short-term capital gains. 5. Save more for retirement. While the tax year ends December 31 for most tax benefits, you have until April 15 to max out contributions to traditional and Roth IRAs. Contribution limits for both (as long as neither you nor your spouse was covered for any part of the year by an employer retirement plan) are the lesser of your taxable compensation (wages, commissions, self-employment income, alimony and so on) or $5,500 for 2013 if you’re under age 50 ($6,500 if you’re age 50 or over). The contribution limit is reduced at higher incomes. When the time comes to file your return, compare tax solutions carefully. Some brands charge more for returns with tax forms for more complicated situations.
Using tax solutions can help you save a lot of money on your taxes. On the other hand, TaxACT’s free federal solution in_cludes all efileable forms for simple and complicated returns. The program uses simple interview questions to guide you through all your deductions and credits. The amount of your refund or taxes owed updates as you go. Some solutions, including TaxACT, also provide information about the tax implications of health care reform to help you make better-informed health insurance decisions. General Tax Tips
• Choose e-file and direct deposit for the fastest refund. • Don’t wait until April 15 to file-rushing often leads to errors. • In the meantime, save all receipts, statements and tax forms in one place. Centralizing your information makes tax time easier and faster. Learn More Visit www.irs.gov and www.taxact.com to learn more about these tax breaks. To file your federal return free with TaxACT Free Edition, visit www.taxact.com.

How Strong Is Your Chi? Learning Tai Chi And Qigong To Prevent Slips, Trips And Falls (NAPSA)-Many older adults have found benefit from the centuriesold Chinese martial arts tai chi and qigong. “Chi” or “qi” (chee) means “life energy.” “Qigong” (cheegoong) literally means “life energy cultivation.” Tai chi consists of a series of flowing movements while qigong focuses on the repetition of isolated movements and breathing. For example, Robert Johnson, M.D., Kaiser Permanente chief of Palliative Care in Walnut Creek, Calif., has practiced tai chi and qigong since the 1970s. He believes these mindbody exercises promote good health, flexibility, strength and balance, which help reduce the risk of falling among seniors.
ment Base odel Rem
Each year, one out of three adults, age 65 and older, falls due to lack of balance or other reasons. Consider that a record 11,000 baby boomers turn 65 and become Medicare eligible every day, and that can add up to a lot of falls and serious injuries. “We spend most of our day in sedentary jobs. Many of us sit in front of a computer or television for hours at a time,” Dr. Johnson said. “To age well, we need to move, stretch and keep our joints lubricated and flexible. Otherwise, our muscles, joints and tendons become stiff and brittle, and that can lead to falls and disabilities.” Dr. Johnson recommends moving the joints in a circular motion. For example, place the

hands on the knees and rotate the knees together in a clockwise and then counterclockwise motion. Also, try sitting in a squat position and stand up slowly to strengthen the quadriceps. At share.kaiserpermanente.org/article/howstrong-is-your-chi/ you can see a short video in which Dr. Johnson demonstrates a few basic exercises and explains why they’re helpful. Along with doing exercises that promote flexibility, seniors can also help prevent falls and serious injuries by taking a few simple precautions at home: Make Your Home Safe • Reduce tripping hazards such as throw rugs, raised doorway thresholds, or loose carpet. • Keep paths clear of electrical cords and clut-
ter. • Add grab bars where necessary-in hallways, stairways and bathtubs. • Add a rubber bath mat in the shower or tub. • Improve lighting throughout the house and use night-lights in hallways and bathrooms. • Keep a phone and flashlight by the bed. Kaiser Permanente offers tai chi and qigong classes at several of its medical facilities. Visit www.kp.org to find classes in your area and learn more about other exercises for strength and balance as well as preventing falls. You can also check out www. kp.org/carestories for more health-related videos. For questions and advice about a specific condition or starting a new exercise regimen, consult with your physician.

Flavorful, Nutritious And Versatile: Enjoying The Goodness Of Grains
Dimensions Accounting Accounting and Income Taxes
• Resist the urge to stir grains as they are cooking. Stirring causes whole grains, especially rice, to become sticky and clump together, making it difficult to prepare a fluffy, flavorful dish. • After they are cooked, whole grains stay fresh for several days in the refrigerator. You can cook a large pot of brown rice or quinoa at the beginning of the week and use it in dishes throughout the week to save cooking time. “If you’re looking for more creative ways to incorporate grains into your cooking or want to sharpen your skills in the kitchen, I suggest attending the Le Cordon Bleu-Bleu Ribbon

pepper flakes 2 cups cooked quinoa (1 cup uncooked quinoa), made according to package directions 1 cup cottage cheese 1⁄4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper 1⁄3 cup Parmesan cheese 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
Ingredients: Olive oil cooking spray Bread crumbs 1 lb. spinach leaves 2 tsp. olive oil 1 yellow onion, peeled and diced 2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced 1 Tbsp. picked fresh thyme leaves 1 tsp. finely chopped fresh rosemary 1⁄4 tsp. crushed red
Directions: Preheat oven to 350°. Spray an 8-by-8-inch glass baking dish with olive oil spray. Coat dish with bread crumbs and set aside. Fill a large bowl with ice and water and set aside. Bring a medium pot of water to a boil and add spinach. Blanch until bright green, about 10-12 seconds, and immediately
transfer to ice bath. When spinach is cold, remove from ice bath, squeeze out all water and finely chop; set aside. In a medium sauté pan, heat olive oil and add onion, garlic, thyme, rosemary and red pepper flakes. Sauté until translucent and remove from heat; transfer to a medium bowl. Add spinach, quinoa, cottage cheese, pepper, Parmesan cheese and eggs to the onion mixture and stir until combined. Pour the mixture into the baking dish and place in the oven. Bake until set and edges are brown, 60 to 70 minutes. Slice and serve warm or at room temperature.

Arts in Chicago. “At Le Cordon Bleu, we educate our students on a range of trendy and classic ingredients and teach them the skills and techniques to create delicious yet wholesome meals.” Although cooking with grains can seem like a daunting task, the chef instructors at Le Cordon Bleu encourage home cooks to soak their long-cooking grains, whether for a few hours or overnight, to minimize the cooking time. This also ensures that any resin left on the grain that can cause a bitter taste will get washed off. The chef instructors at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts share the following tips for choosing and preparing whole grains: • Whole-grain options can be customized for each meal of the day. Make a big batch of steel-cut oats on Sunday evening and eat it for breakfast throughout the week. Add quinoa to lunchtime salads-add the dressing in ad_vance so the grain fully absorbs the flavors of the dish. For dinner, add wheat berries or barley to soups for a hearty, filling meal.

(NAPSA)-With one look down the grocery store aisle or a quick glance at a restaurant menu, it’s clear that whole-grain options are popping up everywhere. From quinoa to buckwheat and farro to freekeh, the number of grain possibilities is growing, leaving home cooks and diners puzzled by how to choose the right one and know how to prepare it. Not only do whole grains provide an array of health benefits, but they can also be an excellent base for hearty dishes that taste great and are remarkably filling. Whether featured in a salad, formed into a patty as a vegetarian burger option, warmed up for breakfast, or used as the base of a thick stew, grains are extremely versatile and can be enjoyed as part of breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert. “Chefs are always looking for creative ways to bring their cooking to the next level, and thanks to the versatility of grains, chefs can use them in countless ways to bring new twists to classic dishes,” says Chef Kirk Bachmann, president of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary

Napa Valley Winery Offers Perfect Winter White (NAPSA)-Red wine may be an obvious choice for the winter months, but a rich, fullbodied Chardonnay is a luxurious alternative. Many of us-not to mention our dinner guestsprefer white wine, even when the temperature drops and the wool scarves come out. This season, in the midst of the red wine aisle, we’re doing an about-face to find the perfect winter white. As America’s most popular white wine, Chardonnay is a natural fit for holiday feasts
and winter menus. For a classic selection, look no further than the vineyards of Napa Valley, one of the world’s most prestigious Chardonnay regions. Tucked away, off the beaten path from mainstream Napa, William Hill Estate Winery crafts an elegant, fullbodied Chardonnay from Napa Valley’s most celebrated vineyards. A bright spot on an otherwise bleak winter, the William Hill Estate 2012 Napa Valley Chardonnay leaves an indelible impression. “We craft this Char-
donnay in a classic Napa Valley style,” says Ralf Holdenried, winemaker for William Hill Estate. “It makes for a versatile pairing with a wide range of foods, but it also stands on its own as a rich, expressive wine with great depth and character.” For the 2012 vintage, Holdenried looked to a handful of select subregions in Napa to create a balanced wine with bright acidity and a luxurious, silky texture. He chose the cooler, rolling hills of Carneros, the southernmost region of

Napa, for Chardonnay grapes with lively green apple and lemon flavors. Moving further north, warmer areas like St. Helena added a richer character to this Chardonnay, with ripe tree fruit flavors and heady notes of baked apple. Layers of caramel, brown spice and toasted oak from barrel aging gave this Chardonnay its decadent palate. An ideal selection for a meal, this Chardonnay complements traditional seasonal fare like turkey, baked ham or roasted goose. And, this wine will be a welcome accompaniment long after the last holiday decoration has been stowed away. That’s because the William Hill Estate 2012
Napa Valley Chardonnay offers expressive layers of flavor that match cream-based pastas, seasoned pork and rich seafood, like scallops or salmon. Holdenried has offered up his favorite smoked salmon recipe to try with his Napa Valley Chardonnay this winter. Smoked Salmon & Apple Relish Crostini Relish: 1 Granny Smith apple, cored, peeled and chopped 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives 2 tablespoons olive oil 1⁄2 lemon, juice only Toppings: 8 ounces soft goat

Customize Your Home To Meet Your Comfort Needs (NAPSA)-Here’s hot news for homeowners:_ Although space heating accounts for more than 40 percent of your energy consumption, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, your heating bills don’t have to get you hot under the collar. Why Get In The Zone You can curtail energy consumption without sacrificing your comfort with the help of ductless zoning systems. These can provide heating and cooling without a network of air ducts. Also referred to as split zoning, a ductless system includes an outdoor unit connected to one or more indoor air handlers connected by refrigerant lines and wiring. These systems provide individual comfort control and operate at ef-
ficiency levels far above traditional central air systems. Because there’s an indoor unit in each zone, homeowners can easily adjust the climate in each room for optimal energy savings. Accessories let you monitor and operate the system remotely through Internet-enabled smart devices and use timer functions to selectively cool and heat specific zones as needed. Rather than keeping each floor or your entire house at one set temperature, you can customize your home to meet your comfort needs. Expert’s Advice As TV personality and New York interior designer Cortney Novogratzwho has used ductless zoning technology in her own home for years to fit

Did You Know? Learn About All The Free Consumer Reports Available To You (NAPSA)-You may know about your right to obtain a free annual report from the three national credit bureaus. Did you also know that you have a right to request information from other nationwide consumer reporting agencies? Here are some times when you may want access to information beyond what you can find in your credit report: • You think someone may have fraudulently cashed checks using your bank account. • You are considering applying for insurance. • You are planning to lease an apartment. • You’ve been asked by a potential employer for your written authorization to get your work history. It’s smart to know what’s in your credit report before applying for home financing or an automobile loan. Similarly, there are times when it’s smart to exercise your right to check other sources of consumer information. If you’re wondering
just what reports are available to you, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) makes it easy to find them. Working with the Consumer Data Industry Association (CDIA), the CFPB has put to_gether a list of different types of consumer reporting agencies. By reviewing the list, consumers can learn about the companies and, most importantly, how to obtain a free consumer report. The CFPB offers this advice: “You may not need to check with every single specialty company on the list. Different companies collect information about different things: your medical records or payments, residential or tenant history, check-writing history, employment history or insurance claims.” “Being transparent to consumers is a top priority of our member companies,” says Stuart Pratt, president and CEO of the CDIA. “In fact, consumers may find that the companies don’t have information about them-for example, if they haven’t
It’s smart to know what’s in your consumer report. rented an apartment or filed an insurance claim. But the data that specialty consumer reporting agencies maintain is highly regulated and consumers have a right to access it at no cost.” You can find the list on the CFPB’s website www.consumerfinance. gov. Simply type “consumer reporting agencies” into the search box or go to files.consumerfinance.gov/f/201207_ cfpb_list_consumer-reporting-agencies.pdf. Adds Pratt, “Our members are happy to hear from consumers and help with any questions.” So take a look at the CFPB list. In the end, it’s about you-and protecting your consumer rights.
