Entertainment Leonardo da Vinci’s Christ painting sells for record $450M NEW YORK (AP) — A painting of Christ by the Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci sold for a record $450 million at auction on Wednesday, smashing previous records for artworks sold at auction or

privately.

The painting, “Salvator Mundi,” Latin for “Savior of the World,” is one of fewer than 20 paintings by Leonardo known to exist and the only one in private hands. It was sold by Christie’s auc-

tion house, which didn’t immediately identify the buyer. “’Salvator Mundi’ is a painting of the most iconic figure in the world by the most important artist of all time,” said Loic Gouzer, co-chairman of postwar and contemporary art at Christie’s. “The opportunity to bring this masterpiece to the market is an honor that comes around once in a lifetime.”

The highest price paid for a work of art at auction had been $179

Skiff ’s CHI grant coordinator said reversing public perceptions about mental illness will make it easier for patients to seek treatment before reaching a crisis level.

“A lot of times people just need that initial support, they don’t need to go to the ER,” Bishop Gibson said.

Hospital administrators are also asking the state legislature to revise chapter 229 of the Iowa code, a change which would allow doctors to use the 48hour emergency hold process at any time. Emergency holds are used in involuntary committals, and only during nights, weekends and holidays, when the court is closed. Expanding that process will make it easier for doctors to treat patients hospital administrators said. Another proposed change, to chapter 125 of the Iowa code, would give nurse practitioners the ability to authorize a 48-hour hold.

Breckenridge said he’s concerned about the mental health issues facing the state, and when lawmakers head back into session next year he said he hopes improving mental health treatment and awareness will be something lawmakers focus on in 2018. Calling it a bipartisan issue, Breckenridge said he plans to reach across the aisle to work with his colleagues to find a solution.

“I see this as a top priority,” Breckenridge said.

Breckenridge said meeting with the group has been encouraging for him, and he’s optimistic that some of the ideas he heard Wednesday afternoon will move forward to make positive changes for Iowans facing mental health issues.

“Mental health is a top priority and should be a top priority, we need to do everything we can to support our local community,” Breckenridge said.

“This group has done an amazing job.”

While he admitted the state’s budget issues will remain a factor, Breckenridge said he’s optimistic that by working together legislators and hospital administrators can find solutions to become more efficient at serving patients facing a mental health crisis. Part of the issue is eradicating the stigma that mental health patients often see, and Breckenridge said breaking down those barriers to treatment to encourage patients to seek sub-acute care options is one way to combat the crisis.

“I was so excited when they were visiting about the combined efforts to educate, this is no different than any other medical condition,” Breckenridge said.

They are also working to make it more user-friendly by replacing an ice cream machine with a cooler and packaged ice cream and bottled pop instead of fountain pop.

A problem with wasps gathering close to swimmers will be addressed by hiring an exterminator next season, Cummins said.

Bakery Continued from Page 1A Roozeboom was self-employed and specialized in cakes for birthday parties, weddings and other occasions. She said when the building came available on Sully’s square she couldn’t pass it up.

Formerly a hardware store, the building offers generous space with several tables, a sitting area, a check-out counter and kitchen.

The building also has several antique items on display from the former hardware store.

“I came to look at it in February of this year, and I thought about it for a while and finally decided on it,” Roozeboom said.

“The building wasn’t finished so the ceiling has been repainted but it’s the original design.”

Other updates included laying down new hardwood flooring in part of the building and moving

in kitchen equipment. Roozeboom said the space will be expanding once the storefront is remodeled.

“The front will be done by next summer,” Roozeboom said.

“I plan to have more seating up front and eventually a couch and a TV for more of a coffee shop vibe and for watching games when they’re on.”

Roozeboom said establishing the name of her business was a decision that took about three months. She came up with the name from combining her last name and her middle name.

“Rose came from the first part of last name and Marie is my middle name,” Roozeboom said.

“And the ‘La’ just fit.”

As the bakery and coffee shop business have taken off, Roozeboom continues to stay busy with wedding cakes. She said she’s booked with wedding cakes until next year in December.

edding planning is an interesting thing to tackle. You have to make a lot of big decisions right away like picking a date and a venue. Next, you have to figure out who will be in the wedding party, pick a wedding dress, pick a theme and take engagement photos. You also must decide where to rent tuxes and what they will look like, picture your floral arrangements and decide on what food to serve, etc. The list seems never-ending at the beginning.

My fiancé, Tim, and I have reached a stage where a lot of the main things have been decided, now we just have to figure out the timeline to be sure everything gets accomplished before the big day arrives.

An important part of the ceremony to me is the music. In the grand scheme of things, it’s probably a rather minor detail; however to me, the music per-

It’s perhaps the reason why I am drawn to musicals as much as I am. Words can be beautiful. Words in perfect melody and harmony go beyond beauty, in my opinion.

This is why Tim told me I could choose whomever I wanted to sing at our wedding. Carrie Underwood was booked up, so I had to look more locally.

In all seriousness, I had a few people in mind who I knew would do a wonderful job. I have been lucky enough to know a lot of wonderful singers in my life. When it came down to who I wanted to sing at my wedding, I really needed to look no farther than my old high school halls.

Sheryl Mullikin was my vocal teacher

for my junior and senior years at GMG High School. She was and still is one of my favorite teachers ever. She taught me it was OK to just love to sing, no matter if it was in high school choir or in the car. Her husband, Alan, is a minister in a neighboring town and would help Sheryl with our musical productions at GMG. He has a background in the performing arts, and he has a great singing voice.

I knew they would do a wonderful job, and I would get the added bonus of working with them again. I called Sheryl at the beginning of the summer to be sure she and Alan would be willing to do it, and she graciously agreed. We had plenty of time to decide on music, so I waited a few months before contacting her again to go over possible song choices.

We will have at least two Christian songs, and I selected a book of duets that included some songs I thought would work. This past weekend, Tim and I visited them at their home to go over music, but mostly so we could catch up — I’ve

seen them only a handful of times in the 10-plus years since I left high school. I wanted them to get to know Tim and make sure he understood why I choose this special couple to perform on our special day.

What I thought might last 30 to 40 minutes turned into a wonderful two hour visit full of laughter and song. I was asking a lot of the Mullikins to sight-read music, but they handled it like pros. We went through several options and have narrowed it down to three songs.

I expected to just sit and listen to them sing, but I got to join in as we sang “The Lord’s Prayer” for fun. The song has a lot of meaning to my family, so getting to sing it in a church on a Sunday was an exhilarating experience.

I can’t wait to get together with the Mullikins again to hear what they can do with the songs we choose. More importantly, I can’t wait until our wedding is here!

Do something, even if it’s wrong If there’s one motto I’ve lived by all my life, and especially now that I’m a (ahem) “senior citizen” it is, “Do something, even if it’s wrong.” I often get caught up in the morning in the myriad things I want to accomplish.

But first and foremost I need to get my 30 minutes of aerobic exercise in, then I need to do the chicken chores, then I need to shower, then I need to eat breakfast, then the phone rings and it’s the pharmacy reminding me of a prescription I need to pick up, then insurance appointments come in on the computer and I need to call the prospective clients and they’re not home so I leave a message, then “breaking news” appears on the television that captures my attention (usually a mass shooting), then Ginnie texts me to see how my morning is going and we do a “back-andforth” for 15 minutes, then one of the prospective clients calls back to tell me they have to “think about it,” then some passerby on the highway pulls in and asks how much my metal pheasants are, then he has some idea for a rusty-metal sculpture he wants built and we spend half-an-hour drawing rough pencil sketches and B.S.’ing, then he tells me he’ll have to “think about it.” I look at the clock and it’s 11:30, I haven’t accomplished a dang thing, and it’s time for lunch (dinner in the country).

That’s when I tell myself, “Do something, even if it’s wrong!” I heard it from my dad.

There are two major projects I want to accomplish before snow flies, both of which I’ve been putting off.

I want to insulate the chicken house, and I want to give the grass its final mowing. Mowing is a major project on our two-and-a-half-acre Empty Nest farm.

I have a 60-inch deck on the John Deere but it still takes a full day to do the mowing and trimming. If I had a zero-turn radius mower I know I could reduce the mowing time by half. Seeing how it’s November, I bet I could get a real good deal on one of those fancy, zero-turn radius mowers. I text the dealer and spend a half an hour figuring out how to use the voice message feature. I tell myself that if I don’t hear immediately back from the dealer (he’ll never figure out the voice recording), I’ll interpret it as a sign that I don’t need a new mower . I don’t hear immediately back. Ahh. I have to get that hen house patched up and insulated before the cold wind starts blowing. There are gaping holes in the north wall and I need to set bales of straw around the foundation. What to do first? Stop it! Do something, even if it’s wrong!

I go to town and get the insulation. That shoots a day. It’s too cold and windy to do anything more.

The second day, I patch the holes on the north side of the chicken house and place bales of straw around the foundation. That’s enough for the second day.

On the third day, a Saturday, Ginnie and I watch the Iowa/Ohio State and Iowa State/West Virginia football games that come on at the same time, different networks. I spend an hour trying to figure out the split-screen feature on the television. I give up and decide to switch back and forth. Iowa upsets Ohio State and Iowa State is embarrassed by West Virginia. Excitement and disappointment clashing together leaves me feeling — uh, blank. And I have accomplished nothing.

On the fourth day I pull the guts out of the chicken house so I can hang insulation on the west wall. The chickens are beside themselves with curiosity and are a nuisance underfoot. I uncover a mouse nest and the chickens go berserk catching mice. Hilarious!

Then the mower dealer texts back (he figured out the voice message after all) and says he has a real good deal on a zero-turn radius-mower and he will deliver.

Dear God, do I stop everything to play with a new toy? No, a job started is a job worth finishing (also, from my dad). I text the dealer back, “I’ll think about it.”

A: The short answer is President Bill Clinton in 1995 expanded upon a presidential proclamation declared by President Ronald Reagan 33 years ago this month.

Recognizing the joys of parenthood and the dream-come-true reality that a loving family brings to young people awaiting adoption — from infancy through adulthood — November is observed as National Adoption Month in the United States. Society benefits from the stability that nurturing, loving homes provide for the next generation.

Strong families make for strong communities that guide young people to become law-abiding, taxpaying, productive citizens.

Prospective parents who choose to open their hearts and homes to adoptive children are blessed by the bonds of love that moms and dads share with their children. And for the child who longs for the permanency of a forever home, the unconditional love that sons and daughters experience with loving parents brings a lifetime of security that no government program or temporary placement in foster care can replicate.

At any given moment, as many as 400,000 children are in the nation’s foster care system; more than 100,000 of these kids await adoption with a forever family. Of those, more than 23,000 will age out of the foster system with no permanent place to call home for the rest of their lives. Adolescents across America struggle with the transition to independence.

Q: How do you work to raise awareness and improve policies to promote adoption?

A: For many years I have championed efforts in the U.S. Senate to advocate on behalf of young people who are in the nation’s foster care system awaiting adoption. In particular, my advocacy has focused extensively on finding solutions for teenagers and young adults who face a lifetime of no permanent support system.

Kids need and deserve the lifeline of love and stability that can be taken for granted by those who don’t face homelessness or being shuffled from school to school and from one foster family to the next. Millions of children across America may complain about the household rules and chores they must follow under their parents’ roof. But for the kids who don’t have the advantages of parental guidance and supervision, they long for the security and certainty that a permanent, loving family guarantees.

The desire for a forever home goes beyond home-cooked meals, clean clothes and a warm place to sleep. Loving parents hold their kids accountable for finishing their homework, getting good grades and making good choices. They set curfews

and raise expectations to help their children achieve their full potential.

Several years ago, I launched the bipartisan Senate Caucus on Foster Youth to raise awareness and solve problems arising in the foster care system. We have used this platform to turn up the volume and listen to the voices of foster youth. Their experience and expertise helps policymakers understand the challenges in the foster care system. It is in the public interest to help ensure that foster youth and prospective adoptive families receive the necessary support services that will help facilitate the transition to lasting, loving homes.

Kids want to be kids. No matter if they are living with their biological family, foster family or adoptive family, kids want to be loved most of all. Collaborating with foster youth brings integrity to our policymaking discussions.

These adolescents live with a high degree of uncertainty looming on their horizons. Providing support services, such as financial literacy tools that teach the importance of paying bills and landing a job or obtaining an advanced degree can make a world of difference for those who age out of foster care and make the transition to independence on their own.

From my leadership position in the U.S. Senate, I will continue to wield my legislative and oversight authority to advocate for foster youth and support permanent loving homes through adoption. Adoption can be a dream-come-true solution for children in foster care, many of whom have experienced trauma, abuse or neglect. Policymakers, child advocates, social workers and officers of the court have a responsibility to do all we can do to bring safety, certainty and stability to these vulnerable kids.

The group was reminded of our agreement to decorate the 1930s living and dining rooms at the Jasper County Museum for the Christmas Open House Dec. 2-3. Members will meet at the museum at 1 p.m. Nov. 20 to share in the decorating.

Member Jeannette Shannon presented this evening’s program on Sears Catalog Homes.

The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 14 at the home of Judy Swenson. Members are to bring an appetizer to share for this annual Christmas party, and our chapter’s charitable donation will be decided.

Man who hates his job drags girlfriend down with griping DEAR ABBY: I have been dating my boyfriend for three years. We have lived together for the last two.

We have a great life together, but there is a problem I don’t know how to solve. “Jeremy” hates his job.

We met in the education department of our college, and after graduation, we both took jobs in the public school system. I enjoy my career, but he loathes his. He complains constantly without seeming to take action on the issue. I know he’s miserable, but he hasn’t looked for other jobs or enrolled in a new school program.

I have bad days, too, but I’ve reached the end of listening to the constant griping. I am usually a positive person, but he is dragging my mood down because of this. He says I need to guide him and give him some direction, but I don’t know what to say. I don’t think it’s my responsibility to tell another adult what he should or shouldn’t do with his life. I don’t mind helping him talk through his choices, but he wants more from me.

This is the man I want to marry. Is there a way to get past this issue and make it work? — UNCERTAIN AND LOST DEAR UNCERTAIN: Until your boyfriend has settled this uncertainty about his work life, any discussion about marriage should be put on hold. I agree you are not qualified to give him career advice. However, you might ask him to tell you what exactly it is that he hates about his job, and what he would rather be doing. His answers may give both of you insight into what he may be better suited for emotionally, and stimulate him to do something positive about his future.

Once he has more clarity, there may be places he can go for career counseling that can help him decide what his next steps should be.

DEAR ABBY: We bought our first home seven months ago. We love it, except for one major issue.

Our neighbor, who’s the same age as I am, is the biggest hypochondriac and laziest person I’ve ever seen.

She was training to be a police officer, but she had a headache every day, so she got let go last year. Ever since then we have been supporting her (food, Wi-Fi, OTC meds, feminine products). I finally cut her off for about a week until she Facebook-messaged me saying she was starving and hadn’t eaten for two days, so I gave in. I gave her a job last week, and she didn’t show up the first day.

What should I do? It’s causing arguments between my husband and me. I hate to think she’s hungry. — TROUBLED IN THE SOUTH DEAR TROUBLED: You are a kindhearted person, but you are being taken advantage of. If your neighbor has family that can be located, they should be notified that she’s unable to care for herself. If no relative is willing to take responsibility for her, contact social services or direct the woman to the nearest food bank or soup kitchen. I suspect her problems are more extensive than headaches and procrastination.

Ex-employee of car dealership charged with theft WEST BURLINGTON — A Danville woman has been charged with theft, accused of stealing nearly $139,000 from an eastern Iowa car dealership where she had worked.

Jeanna Joan Jones, 42, has been charged with first-degree theft. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison.

Investigators say Jones was involved in a scam in which she overpaid commissions to a 70-year-old sales associated at Deery Brothers in West Burlington.

DAVENPORT — A Davenport man convicted in the shooting deaths last year of his parents has been sentenced to life in prison.

Sean Freese, 21, was sentenced Wednesday to two back-to-back life sentences without the possibility of parole. A jury convicted Freese last month of two counts of first-degree murder for fatally shooting 58-year-old Kevin Freese and 57-year-old Donna Freese with a semi-automatic rifle in the early morning hours of Oct. 5, 2016.

SIOUX CITY — Coins, photos and newspaper articles are among the contents of a century-old time capsule that has been removed from the cornerstone of the Woodbury County Courthouse. The time capsule was removed Tuesday in preparation for the landmark building’s centennial next year.

The iron box had to be drilled out of granite.

The box, set in July 1916, contains foreign and U.S. coins, photos of then-President Woodrow Wilson and city street scenes and the results of an October 1875 local election.

COUNCIL BLUFFS — The trial for a mother accused of giving her 8-year-old daughter a fatal amount of an antidepressant drug has been postponed.

Misty Frazier, 34, had been set for Dec. 12. It has now been pushed back to April 24. Frazier has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, child endangerment and giving prescription drugs to a minor without a prescription.

Lawmakers tasked with opioids report miss deadline DES MOINES (AP) — A group of lawmakers tasked with evaluating Iowa’s response to the opioid epidemic will miss a deadline for completing a report that offers findings and recommendations for addressing the issue next legislative session.

The six-member Opioid Epidemic Evaluation Study Committee was supposed to deliver an opioids report to GOP Gov. Kim Reynolds and the Republican-controlled Legislature by Nov. 15. The report wasn’t available Wednesday, following a request from The Associated Press.

USDA petitioned to include poultry in humane slaughter law DES MOINES (AP) — As Americans prepare to consume some 45 million turkeys on Thanksgiving, an animal rights group asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Wednesday to require more humane treatment for turkeys, chicken and other poultry as the birds are sent to slaughter.

California-based Mercy For Animals filed a petition with the USDA that seeks to have poultry covered under the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. The 1958 law requires that pigs, cows and a list of other animals be free from neglect, abuse and pain as they make their way through a packing plant. The law excludes poultry.

“Chickens, turkeys and other birds are every bit as capable of experience pain and suffering as the cows, pigs and sheep who are protected under the humane slaughter act, and it simply makes no sense to exclude these animals from equal protection under the law,” said Vandhana Bala, an attorney for Mercy For Animals.

were working behind-thescenes to introduce legislation next session aimed at responding to the growing use of opioids, which include both prescription pain relievers such as oxycodone and illegal substances such as heroin. The state has recorded growing abuse of opioids over several years, and lawmakers have indicated it will be a priority when they return to the state Capitol in 2018. It’s still unclear what such legislation will look like.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has also highlighted the issue, holding an awareness week recently and outlining some general priorities for monitoring and treating abuse.

A USDA spokeswoman said the agency didn’t have an immediate comment but would release a response later Wednesday.

Tom Super, a spokesman for the National Chicken Council, a trade group for companies that raise chickens for meat, said including poultry in the law is unnecessary, in part because poultry processors “already have strong moral and financial motivation to ensure chickens are handled properly.” At least one large poultry producer has already voluntarily made changes.

Nearly 9 billion chickens raised for meat were slaughtered last year, along with 243 million turkeys and 27 million ducks, according to the USDA. The petition, filed with the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, alleges that cases have been documented of chickens scalded to death in tanks of hot water or having legs and wings cut off by errant beheading machines while alive and conscious.

undercover investigations have shown slaughterhouse workers ripping heads off chickens and violently slamming birds into shackles. In a 2015 case, five workers at a processing plant in California were suspended and a fired worker eventually pleaded no contest to animal cruelty; the same year in Mississippi, the group filed criminal affidavits but no regulatory or criminal charges were filed.

Such violations in a beef or pork processing plant would result in punitive action by regulators.

Super, the National Chicken Council spokesman, said the law cited in the petition was specifically written for large animals in the red meat industry.

“It wasn’t designed to accommodate chicken. In fact, trying to shoehorn chicken harvesting into the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act would probably inflict drastic welfare harm on chickens,” he said. “It’s a square-peg-roundhole situation.”

Iowa, Nebraska volunteers send cookies to US armed forces ​COUNCIL BLUFFS (AP) — Volunteers from Iowa and Nebraska are rushing to send 30,000 cookies overseas to deployed U.S. service members for the holiday season.

The group, Iowa Cookie Crumbs, usually mails about 7,000 cookies to send to troops every month. But members are increasing their efforts this November to send far more cookies for the holidays.

The volunteers bake, package and mail cookies to boost the morale of deployed individuals.

She says the support volunteers receive is outstanding.

“It just goes to show that the Midwest culture of helping others is certainly shown in this project,” Over said.

Iowa’s Jackson leads nation in interceptions IOWA CITY (AP) — The biggest question surrounding Iowa cornerback Josh Jackson entering 2017 was whether he could live up to the lofty standards set by his predecessors.

The biggest question now is whether Jackson will leave for the NFL after the season.

Jackson, a 6-foot-1, 192-pound junior from Corinth, Texas, sidestepped questions about his future on Tuesday, preferring to focus instead on a season that continues Saturday when the Hawkeyes (6-4, 3-4 Big Ten) host Purdue (4-6, 2-5) in their home finale.

Jackson’s performance this season — a nation-leading seven interceptions, 163 interception return yards and 23 passes defended — has changed the trajectory of his young career. Jackson has picked off five passes in his last two games, earning backto-back defensive player of the

week honors from the Big Ten. “He’s one of those guys that can just do it,” Iowa linebacker Bo Bower said of his teammate. “He’s extremely gifted and talented — and then he works his butt off. And obviously, over time, that’s going to accumulate and eventually it’s just going to click. And it just clicked.”

Jackson didn’t become a starter until this season because the Hawkeyes had two standouts at cornerback in Desmond King and Greg Mabin. King won the Thorpe Award in 2015 as the nation’s best defensive back — and Jackson might do so as well after this season.

Jackson redshirted in 2014 and played sparingly as a freshman a year later following a brief stint at wide receiver. Jackson saw further action in 2016, but his path JACKSON | 2B

INA all-state program goes wrong way F

or all of my years of being a sports journalist in Iowa, taking part in the Iowa Newspaper Association’s all-state program is something I look forward to each season.

After the football, boys and girls basketball and baseball seasons, writers and coaches from around the state are invited to Des Moines to take part in an all-state meeting.

The meetings are four times a year.

The basketball ones take half of a day.

Baseball and football can be long days.

But it’s something some of us Iowa journalists have taken pride in.

Sometimes we miss. But most of the time, the teams are picked pretty well.

This year, the INA decided to change the way the program is done. The all-

The writers who attend these meetings haven’t taken this well. Plenty of discussions on social media have taken place.

It’s therapeutic for me. It helps me get things off my chest.

The in-person meetings that have been going on for the past several years involves plenty of discussion from both writers and coaches. We separate into different classes and try to pick the best teams we can.

The discussion has been thrown out the window. You can discuss anything like this over the Internet. So that’s my No. 1 problem.

I need the coaches’ input on certain players. Offensive linemen don’t have statistics listed online. It’s hard to know who the top guys are with-

out having coaches who have coached them or coached against them and/or writers who see them play every week.

If I do my homework, I can find the insane statistics that Baxter’s Braydon Aker and Travis Lindemoen put up this season. It’s not hard to pick those guys for first team like I did. The numbers warrant it and the Bolts were 8-1.

The one guy who may get left out is Will Clapper, who was a Class 2A allstater last year.

We were given names and schools of the players up for all-state. There are no stats and no information on these players. We have to just know or spend hours figuring it out.

Clapper should be an all-stater. He may not be because other writers may not know how good he is or that he was an all-stater last year.

The same goes for PCM linemen Colton Warrick and Lynnville-Sully’s Jesse Van Wyk. Those guys were key linemen for their team’s offensive units but unless you watch them, it’s hard to know that.

day but after looking at the way things were set up, I decided to take a step back, push the pause button and regroup.

I needed to sleep on it. I needed to figure out how I wanted to deal with this change. I ended up making my selections Tuesday. Hopefully, things work out for the area athletes who deserve recognition. That’s my biggest fear. Some deserving kids will most likely get left out.

The new format can work. But just giving the writer’s names and schools without any other information won’t help it work.

I would much rather spend a few hours in Des Moines chatting about Iowa’s best athletes, but this may be the way it goes down from now on.

Hopefully we can make the best of this situation. Even though our concerns are largely falling on deaf ears.

The teams should be released early next week. Brace yourselves. This could be interesting.

Allgaier races for NASCAR Xfinity title with new crew chief MOORESVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Justin Allgaier will have a new crew chief in the NASCAR Xfinity Series championship race at Homestead-Miami Speedway this weekend.

Veteran car chief Billy Wilburn will call the shots as Allgaier drives for his first career NASCAR title.

Jason Burdett has been suspended for the final race because of an unattached brake cooling hose found during inspection after Phoenix.

Allgaier is one of four drivers competing for the Xfinity title.

He’ll race against JR Motorsports teammates William Byron and Elliott Sadler and Richard Childress Racing’s Daniel Hemric.

Allgaier has two wins, 10 top-5s and 17 top-10 finishes in 32 starts.

“I know that we have an extremely good race team and a lot of depth,” Allgaier said. “When you look at other teams that we run against, I think that would be an area that they probably struggle in. I know for us, we’re making the most of the situation that we’re dealt.

Scherzer breezed past Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, drawing 27 of the 30 first-place votes in balloting by members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

“Yes!” Scherzer shouted, thrusting his arms up when the honor was announced on MLB Network.

“I really wanted to be a leader on this team, and just be accountable,” Jackson said. “I just try to come to work with the mindset to get better.”

It was clear from the opener that the Hawkeyes had found a good one in Jackson. He was brilliant in a 24-3 win over NFL prospect Josh Allen and Wyoming on Sept. 2, spearheading a stellar defensive effort.

Jackson consistently improved as the weeks wore on, but in the last two weeks he established himself as arguably the best cornerback in America.

Jackson had three interceptions against Ohio State’s J.T. Barrett — who entered the game with 22 TD passes since his last pick — to cement a 55-21 rout of the Buckeyes, their worst defeat under coach Urban Meyer.

Corey Kluber of the Cleveland Indians easily won his second AL Cy Young Award earlier in the day. He got 28 of the 30 first-place votes, with Boston’s Chris Sale second and Luis Severino of the New York Yankees third.

Kluber led the majors with a 2.25 ERA and his 18 wins tied for the most in baseball. He added to the Cy Young he won with the Indians in 2014.

Kluber and Scherzer both

had rough outings in the playoffs. Voting for the awards was completed before the postseason began.

The final BBWAA honors will come Thursday when the MVP awards are announced in the AL and NL. Nicknamed “Klubot” for his robotic manner on the mound, Kluber finished 18-4 and struck out 265.

Kluber was especially dominant down the stretch, closing out the season by going 11-1 to help Cleveland win the AL Central.

Sale topped the majors with 308 strikeouts — he was the first AL pitcher to fan 300 since Pedro Martinez in 1999. Sale went 17-8 with a 2.90 ERA.

Alabama rises to No. 1 in CFP rankings after Georgia loss

By Ralph D. Russo The Associated Press Alabama and Clemson are back on top of the College Football Playoff rankings, the ninth time over the last three seasons that the Crimson Tide and Tigers have held the first two spots in some order.

Alabama was the selection committee’s new No. 1 on Tuesday night, with Clemson up two spots to No. 2. Miami and Oklahoma followed, joining the top four for the first time this season. Wisconsin was fifth and Auburn was up to sixth.

Alabama and Clemson have met in the last two national championship games, with each winning one. If they win out, there is good chance they could enter the postseason positioned to make it three straight title game matchups.

The Crimson Tide had been second behind Georgia in the first two selection committee rankings, but the Bulldogs and previously No. 3 Notre Dame were beaten

last weekend, opening up the top for changes.

Unbeaten Miami jumped from seventh to third and along with Clemson gave the Atlantic Coast Conference two top-four teams for the first time in the four-year College Football Playoff era.

Oklahoma moved up one spot.

Unbeaten Wisconsin moved up from eighth and is the highest-ranked Big Ten team. Auburn is the highest-ranked team with two losses.

Georgia is seventh and Notre Dame is eighth.

Ohio State is back in the top 10 after an impressive victory against Michigan State, and Penn State is 10th.

Southern California at 11th is the highest-ranked Pac-12 team.

UCF climbed to No. 15, making the undefeated Knights the highest-ranked team from a Group of Five conference. The highest-ranked conference champion from outside the Power Five is guaranteed a spot in

the New Year’s Six bowls.

Who’s In Control?

There were complaints from Miami and Oklahoma fans about being stuck behind Clemson. Committee chairman Kirby Hocutt, the athletic director at Texas Tech, said Clemson’s six victories against teams with winning records gave the Tigers the nod.

He added that the impact of Clemson’s loss to Syracuse (4-6) has been mitigated by injuries hampering Tigers quarterback Kelly Bryant in that game. Bryant came into the game with a sore ankle that hobbled him and missed the second half with a concussion.

Hocutt also pointed at that Miami not having a road win against a winning team worked against the Hurricanes and that Oklahoma’s loss to Iowa State (6-4) at home was weighing down the Sooners.

Oklahoma can rest easy.

The Sooners should be fine if they win out and are Big 12 champions.

Fast-forward to Sunday, and it’s easy to envision pass-happy Bortles resurfacing vs. a Browns club that is very good on the ground but vulnerable through the air. Without Allen Hurns, and with Dede Westbrook’s status up in the air, Jacksonville will have even fewer options for Bortles.
