Since Al and Jeanne Conover opened Baxter’s Blue Ribbon Cafe on Highway F17 a little more than one year ago, their restaurant guestbook already has signatures from 29 states and three countries.

If you ask Al Conover what’s the Blue Ribbon’s draw, he says the secret is in the beef.

“We serve Certified Angus Beef and Certified Berkshire Pork.

They’re top of the line. We’re not trying to sell any low-end product,” Al Conover said.

The Conovers have been involved in livestock agriculture for decades. They own an auctioneering business where one of Al’s most high-profile gigs every year is to auctioneer the Sale of Champions at the Iowa State Fair.

They’ve also bred, raised and sold their own high-quality beef and pork throughout the years.

Although the Conovers admit they’ve never been restaurateurs,

they knew the quality of Certified Angus Beef and Certified Berkshire pork would get people in the door.

“People love the gals’ specials, but on a daily basis we’re featuring these great burgers,” Al Conover said. “Our sandwich sales are getting huge.”

The menu includes neverfrozen 1/2- and 1/3-pound Certified A n g u s Prime Cut burgers, p o r k burgers a n d tenderloins with a variety of garnishments.

The 1/3-pound prime cut bacon cheeseburger is one of the top sellers.

Sides include diner classics like french fires, cheese balls and season favorites like potato salad.

ucked into the rolling hills west of Prairie City sits a brand new house with a lot of character. The home, owned by Cole and Ashley Van Ryswyk, is built on a hill and offers a spectacular countryside view off the back deck.

Built in 2015, the house is home to a family of five and features a spacious living room with an open staircase, a vaulted, ceilinglevel fireplace, and a modern kitchen complete with a hidden walk-in pantry.

When designing

the home, Ashley said she wanted an open floor plan so she could see what her children were doing while she was in the living room or kitchen.

The kitchen sits just off of the living room and has a seated bar where the family usually

eats, Ashley said.

The home also has a formal dining room with a large table and bench seating to accommodate additional guests.

While the master bedroom and bath are located on the first floor, the children’s bedrooms are upstairs. Each

bedroom has its own personality, and fair share of toys, which matches the child who calls it home.

With the newest family member just arriving in October, the Van Ryswyk’s are ready to settle down and continue to make this new house a home.

I was always wondering why everyone’s corsages looked the same. I worked at Hy-Vee as a florist. My grandma worked in a flower shop, but it wasn’t until after I finished school I realized I also had an aunt and uncle with the same background.

Q: Where did you grow up?

A: I grew up here in Colfax and graduated from high school here.

I went to college at Kirkwood and studied horticulture.

Q: When did you decide that becoming a florist interested you?

A: I have had an interest since high school.

Q: What’s your favorite part of owning a business in Colfax?

A: The people. I know a lot of my customers.

Aside from that, I like the flexibility, the ability to make my own schedule and I get to go outside the bubble more with my ideas.

Cardio Bilingual YMCA instructor helps Spanish speakers feel comfortable

or Esmeralda L e o n , overcoming a language barrier is about more than exercise. It’s about being a member of a society.

Leon has been teaching a bilingual weights and cardio exercise fitness class at Newton YMCA this fall called Pesas y Cardio Circuito. In both Spanish and in English, Leon is not only helping YMCA members burn calories and build muscle but also to erase barriers they might have in their minds.

“There aren’t any lines,” Leon said, referring to language barriers. “Lines are only in our minds.”

Leon has been a member of the Newton YMCA for about four years, but only recently began teaching classes.

The class meets at 8:45 a.m. Thursday mornings, so it’s for people who like to work out in the early part of the day.

Leon is still in the process of becoming completely certified as an instructor, but she is gaining invaluable experience each week running the bilingual class.

The bilingual class is still small

but growing, as it is unique in central Iowa. One recent class had 10 attendees.

Leon said the incredible support the YMCA staff, including Assistant Executive Director Rhonda Robson, have been instrumental in getting the bilingual class going.

“Rhonda (Robson) has been very supportive of this type of program.”

Leon is a native of Degollado — a town slightly bigger than Newton, located on the eastern edge of the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Spanish is her native tongue, so PESAS Y CARDIO | 23 19

State Fair, promoting a program that is unique to Des Moines Area Community College’s Newton Campus.

An eight-quarter court reporter training program began at DMACC Newton last fall with eight students, and there are already 28 signed up to begin the program this fall.

Newton Campus Advisor Tom Shively was helping man the booth Thursday, and spoke highly of others who

are helping fill a void in an industry that desperately needs a newly trained workforce.

“We used to talk to high school teachers who teach shorthand,

but that isn’t taught in schools anymore,” Shively said. “So now, we have to find other means to get kids’ attention.”

had occurred and what it meant for the country. “We kids learned a lot,” Verle Kooistra averred.

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor 75 years ago to a large extent overwhelmed the “tidings of comfort and joy” that traditionally attend the Christmas holidays. For the people of Jasper County, like those all over the United States, Christmas 1941 was charged with anxious moments and ultimately sorrow as news reached home that local men were among those killed in the Battle of the Pacific.

Johon Sherman Greene, well-known Colfax attorney, had been killed, the first Jasper County man to die in action in the defense of his country, and the second Iowa casualty of the Pacific war. He was killed in the raid on Hickam Field.

Just one week later, it was reported that Max Cartwright, a former Baxter man, had been killed in action, “probably while serving in the navy in the Hawaiian area.”

“2 More Boys Lost” the headline screamed on Dec. 22, the day after word was received by relatives that William Walter Henderson, of Newton, and Robert Maurice Bridie, of Colfax, were listed as “missing.”

Bob Thorson and some of his high school friends were playing pinball at the Scoreboard on the northwest corner of the Newton square one August afternoon when Seaman Bill Henderson came in wearing his summer whites. After watching the boys play for a time, he asked if he could join in. As he was leaving, Bob said, he gave them each a quarter, which “was like a dollar in those days,” and introduced himself. “He was such a nice young fella.”

On July 3, 1943, Fireman Bob Bridie was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart “for Military Merit and for wounds received in action resulting in his death Dec. 7, 1941.”

Both were aboard the U. S. S. “Arizona.”

Altogether, 142 Jasper County men were serving in the U. S. Navy and Marine Corps and contingents at the time of the attack.

Jasper Countians responded quickly to their country’s call. A number of men who had been received at the Fort Des Moines induction center for the selective service had been moved on to training camps by Christmas day.

“And so Christmas this year is a serious time, not a merry, fun making season,” James R. Rhodes, editor of the Daily News, opined.

“But because it is Christmas, the season will prevail. It will prevail down through the years, regardless of the darkness of the hour.

“And fortunate it is that this is so. This is the season that provides the one complete hope for the ominous days ahead. The wars which man persists in waging from time to time pass. Christmas remains eternal through times of suffering, and times of pleasure.”

At the same time it was announced that the country was at war with the Empire of Japan, the Daily News announced that it was sponsoring the annual home decorations contest. Also, the Happy

Hearts were launching plans for their 1941 Christmas campaign by selling memberships.

A number of organizations carried on with their holiday plans by holding Christmas parties.

On Dec. 20, children in grades one to three attended a party given by the Girl Reserves, a Newton High School organization. Principal H. A. “Pop” Lynn put in an appearance as Santa Claus.

The Newton Business Girls’ club held a party at the YMCA. Newton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1655 and its women’s auxiliary held a joint Christmas party in the VFW clubrooms Dec. 22.

One hundred twenty-three underprivileged boys in Newton were invited to the annual Tri-Y club Christmas party at the Washer City Café Dec. 23. A wrestling demonstration

On Dec. 24, at the annual Christmas party for the employees of the Parsons Company, President E. H. Brugger informed factory and office employees that they would be receiving bonus checks for the “gratifying” results of the past year.

Leon said she gets encouragement from her

cousin and from others in the fitness world who believe in her skills as an

instructor. Those skills not only show people how to become fit physically but also in terms of confidence.

The instructor said she wants to see native Spanish speakers not only have the confidence to take exercise classes, but also to become active in other parts of society, such as church.

“There are no limits,” Leon said, referring to language and all other selfimposed limitations. “If you think about limits, you’ll have them. If you think about succeeding, it’s more likely to happen.”
