Rhubarb Twister When it comes to a sweet summer creation, no one does it better than Goldie’s Ice Cream Shoppe in Prairie City.

This summer there’s a new signature Twister behind the counter, and it might take you back to what grandma used to make. The Rhubarb Twister is a new flavor creation launching in mid-June, and Goldie’s owner Brad Magg said its simplicity is what makes his sweet treat great.

“It’s probably not much different from what your grandmother’s rhubarb pie recipe was. Our strawberry-rhubarb pie is one of our best selling pies, so I’m assuming the Rhubarb Twister will have a built-in fan club,” Magg said. “Maybe not as much as the Dutch Letter Twister, but it will have fans.”

This is the first Goldie’s ice cream creation to feature a rhubarb topping. Magg said there’s no real secret ingredient — with rhubarb you want to keep things as fresh and as simple as possible.

With the fresh rhubarb topping, Magg said you can really mix it up — order a rhubarb sundae, rhubarb shake or malt.

It comes in three sizes — small, medium and large — and will be available through mid-September.

“If you like the tang and you like the crunch of Rhubarb, it’s great,” Magg said.

“For people who aren’t Goldie’s purists, they’ll notice we have more toppings and more selections than any ice cream shop around. It’s been fun to build that collection of flavors and toppings.”

Magg said it’s not everywhere you can find flavors like TWIX and KitKat, as well as homemade cookies and brownies inside an ice cream treat.

Goldie’s is open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. September through May, and 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. June through August. The kitchen closes at 8:30 p.m.

Harding’s ark

Colfax farmer finds her niche with barn full of animals COLFAX — Walking across her farm one summer morning — German Shepherds at her side — Natalie Harding turns to look behind her at the view of her farm, which she shares with her husband Jeff.

“This is my little piece of heaven right here,” Natalie said.

Spread across eight acres, with a rambling farmhouse smack dab in the middle, the Harding’s is a menagerie of animals. In addition to the prize-winning German Shepherds, there are barns and outbuildings full of goats, sheep, turkeys, geese, chickens, horses and even peacocks that have found a home on the Harding farm.

Her father, a retired cattle farmer, lives down the road.

Together they maintain a one-acre garden she uses to keep her family fed all year long. At any given moment, there are four generations of Hardings working side by side in the garden, a point of pride for Natalie.

The Hardings have called their farm in Colfax home since 2014. They’d been renting a farm nearby, but when a friend called to let her know this property had come up for sale, they didn’t’ hesitate to pull the trigger. Natalie called on a Friday, saw the property on Saturday, and by Monday it was theirs. The quiet tranquility of the farm is what attracted her to the property, and four years later, she’s just as happy as the day she moved in.

“We came right down this road, and when I saw it, I thought — this is perfect, just the size I need,” Natalie said.

The farm seemed like the ideal place for Natalie to raise puppies. With each dog priced at $1,000, Harding already has a waiting list for the litter she’s expecting this year.

Sheena Rosa, who lives in Huxley bought a puppy from Natalie last year. Her communication skills and her hands on approach set Natalie apart from other breeders, Rosa said.

“She really loves her dogs, and you can tell that she real-

ly, really cares about the animals,” Rosa said. “I know it’s a lot of hard work for her, but she makes it look really easy.”

Unlike many breeders, Natalie encouraged Rosa and her husband to come out and spend time with the puppies, even after they’d decided which dog was right for them.

Her hands-on approach made it easier for Rosa to feel comfortable with the process.

“We saw him online, and we bonded with him right away. We were grateful to have that experience,” Rosa said.

“She let us be there as long as we wanted to interact with them and see if we had a connection with them.”

Even after finding Toro, their puppy, Rosa and Natalie have stayed close, with Rosa bringing Toro back often to visit his mother.

“She puts a lot of thought and care into taking care of the puppies. She’s very open to having anyone come out to her house and visit the puppies,” Rosa said.

Born on a farm, Natalie can’t imagine living anywhere else. Other than a brief stint in a townhouse following a divorce, she’s always lived on a farm. Even when the days get long, she can’t imagine doing anything else.

In addition to taking care of the animals she raises, Natalie also provides daycare for her grandson, in addition to teaching several classes at Newton’s DMACC campus. A licensed Early Childhood Education and Addiction Specialist, Natalie is working on her PhD in between teaching.

Mornings start early for Natalie. She’s usually up by 6 a.m. to check on her animals and walk her dogs first thing. Every day, there’s plenty to do, from canning to gardening, homework and taking care of her grandchildren. She also maintains two separate Facebook pages — Corner Creek Acres, for the farm, and Zeus and Sasha,

Continued from pg 12 a page for the German Shepherd puppies she breeds. Before bed, she’ll make one last check to make sure all of her animals are in safely for the night. She’s had to fend off coyotes on occasion.

“I shoot ‘em with a couple of high powered rifles,” Natalie said.

Despite the challenges, Natalie still swears there’s plenty of charm to her frontier life. With more and more Americans becoming interested in rural living, Natalie said she’s envious at how easy it is to get started with a small farm like hers these days.

Before the internet, Natalie said she learned to ask as many questions as she could when she was first starting out.

“People getting into this now are lucky because you have YouTube videos and Google. When I started, we didn’t have that,” Harding said. “I had to go two miles down the road to talk to the old farmer at his kitchen table.”

With years of practice, the Hardings are very nearly self sufficient. All of the meat they eat comes from animals they’ve raised or from deer her husband has hunted. The family’s vegetable garden, combined with copious amounts of canning, means Harding only needs to buy a few things when she heads into the store.

“I’ve always been at home in the country,” Harding said.

Where everyone’s an athlete Cornfed CrossFit going strong in Newton

The sounds of weights hitting the ground, people grunting, large fans whirling and music blaring — the sounds of Newton’s Cornfed CrossFit on East 12th Street South.

CrossFit is defined by professionals as “constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity.” To put it simply, CrossFit is a workout regimen with high intensity for short amounts of time.

Cornfed CrossFit owner Josh Britton said classes average 10 patrons, who they always refer to as “athletes,” with run times around one hour so people can go back to their lives, as their website reads.

According to Cornfed CrossFit’s website, the gym offers a free beginners course to those who are just starting CrossFit. Britton said CrossFit is for everybody, from first-timers and older people to teenagers working on the same workouts, just at different intensities.

“We have the ability to scale or modify any workout for anybody’s needs,” Britton said.

He said Cornfed also has started a kid-friendly CrossFit program so they can begin learning the movements and a healthy lifestyle early in their development.

Continued from pg 15 While working out is seen as an activity for the individual, co-owner Julie Britton called CrossFit a community workout regimen.

“We have a lot of people who would have never associated outside of the gym becoming very good friends and hanging outside of the gym,” Julie said.

Julie said the workouts are largely individual with the athletes work side by side, but they will also do partner workouts.

Josh Britton said Cornfed has a team mentality where everyone feels they are in it together, and the Brittons encourage the athletes to highfive and congratulate each other once the work out is done.

Josh said there are many reasons to get into CrossFit. He’s been a member of a traditional gym in the past where focus was on specific parts of the body, such as the back and legs. Josh said he got bored with the workouts and didn’t want to get any bigger.

He said other reasons someone might try CrossFit is being new to fitness can be intimidating and hard knowing where to start. Plus, members say CrossFit is interesting, a good way to get healthy and help recover from an injury.

For those interested in CrossFit but are intimidated, Cornfed CrossFit in Newton has introduced a four-session Summer 2018 • Jasper County Living

beginners course.

The classes are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Josh calls it a great place for beginners to be beginners. The Brittons and coaches at Cornfed CrossFit talk about what they are looking for, and it is the time where new athletes can ask questions and not feel judged.

At the end of the sessions, athletes will do a scaled exercise so they know what a CrossFit workout looks and feels like, Josh said. Individual beginner sessions are available as well for those who learn better one on one or if they are on the shy side.

Josh said CrossFit is an activity anyone can do. He sees former college athletes, current college athletes who are home from school, “high school studs” or those he says are trying to get back in shape like they were in their glory days, newbies and kids.

Julie said she encourages people to come to their classes and see who their members are. They really do have every kind of person imaginable working out on the gym floor.

“We also have grandparents who want to get stronger so they can play with their grandkids and parents who want to get stronger to play with their kids,” Julie said.

Meet Ryan Rump Newton High School’s new Athletic Director Q. Tell us a little about yourself A. I am originally from southeast Iowa, where I graduated from Fort Madison Aquinas High School. I was a six-sport high school athlete and participated in many other extra curricular activities.

I graduated from St. Ambrose University with a degree in accounting and played four years of college basketball. I worked at Deere & Co. in the Quad Cities for three years, then moved back to southeast Iowa and took a position at Burlington Notre Dame as activities director and head boys basketball coach.

I received my masters degree in teaching from Western Illinois University after moving and eventually took over the high school physical education and health positions at Burlington Notre Dame to go along with activities director and head boys basketball.

While at Burlington Notre Dame, I acquired my degree in educational leadership from Viterbo University. After 10 years at Burlington Notre Dame, I accepted a position in Keokuk as their activities director. After three years in Keokuk, I moved to Des Moines with my wife and accepted a job at Knoxville as their activities director, where I have remained for the last four years. I have been married for five years and currently reside in Des Moines. My interests include all sports and activities, trying to stay fit and supporting the Newton Cardinals.

Q. What are your goals for the upcoming year?

A. My goals for the upcoming year include: 1. Getting familiar with the Newton community and gaining a clear understanding of district policies and procedures. 2. Establishing positive relationships with district coaches, staff, community stakeholders and booster clubs. 3. Evaluating current practices and looking to continue and enhance what is already an outstanding activities program.

Q. What are you looking to improve?

A. At this point, it is hard to say what if any improvements need made. A lot of my first year will be spent evaluating things like current procedures, facilities and district practices. After getting to know these things a little bit better, it will be easier to make an assessment of what the district might be in need of or what could be tweaked a bit.

Programs, leadership pushes Newton housing forward After Maytag left Newton nearly a decade ago, the city of 15,000 developed a reputation around the state that growth was at a halt.

Home builders were not looking to set-up shop in town. Residents were getting older. In 2013, an entire year went by and not a single house was sold.

“People outside of Newton would look at us like there was no reason to come out here because they couldn’t sell a house out here even if they wanted to. Overcoming that was our biggest challenge. We had to fight that concept that we were actually growing,” Newton Housing Development Corporation Director Bruce Showalter said.

Following a housing study for the city in 2011, the Newton City Council passed a housing initiative to help jumpstart construction in 2014. Through this initiative, Showalter said about $3.65 million in bonds were set aside to help address several of Newton’s housing problems including funding the city’s Dangerous and Dilapidated Program, Newton Housing Initiative and other housing projects and programs.

Continued from pg 22 The city also hired Craig Armstrong as a development specialist, reorganized the NHDC and brought on Showalter as NHDC’s director. “(The survey) said we were slowly dying. Our population was slowly dying or were moving away. Not enough younger families were moving in to replace them,” the housing director said. “(Craig Armstrong and I) decided that we would go around the towns around Newton. We went to Grinnell, Marshalltown, Pella, Knoxville; we went to Ankeny twice, we went to Altoona twice and we went to a bunch of others. We gave our program about our incentives to the builders and retails.

We told them ‘Newton is growing, not dying.’ We were trying to change the image.”

Incentives According to Showalter, one major contributor to the housing growth was the Newton Housing Initiative, which offered some incentives for new single-family homes valued at

least $160,000. The program includes a $10,000 cash incentive and a “Get To Know Newton” welcome package, valued at more than $3,000. This initiative also waived building permit and inspection fees for home builders. Showalter said the city also helped NHDC purchase an existing plat near Agnes Patterson Memorial Park, which would be known as Fairmeadows North Plat 7. That plat featured six lots with infrastructure, including streets and water, in place.

Five houses were built by Ground Breaker Homes and sold at an average price of $233,000 and $244,000.

From there, NHDC and the city continued their work on getting new homes built in Newton, from finishing off previously developed subdivisions to the Fairmeadows North housing development Plat 8 expansion.

Fountain Hills, located on the northwest corner of South 12th Avenue West and Highway 14, quickly sold two homes to new residents after it was redeveloped in 2015. Showalter said since then, they have built four additional houses, three of which are

new residents. He said a large appeal of the area was the homes’ proximity to the interstate.

Another previously developed subdivision is Bradford Estates, located near the H.A. Lynn Stadium. Showalter said that area has been built out, except for five lots. One house was built, and three are for sale. He said the built has an offer on it and is estimated to be sold this year.

Cardinal Ridge, a townhouse association, recently hosted an open house May 12. He said as it is a city project, they estimate it will be finished in the next three to four years, with all the houses in the subdivision built out.

He said five units are currently under construction, and two are pending.

In the southeast section of Newton, six lots were available in an old subdivision. Three of those lots have been sold.

Continued from pg 23 this year,” Showalter said. “We have been really good at getting houses started and getting someone to buy them sold right when they finish.

That is exactly what we wanted.”

Just keep building The housing director said about 40 percent of the homeowners who’ve built and constructed since 2014 are new to town.

“We are excited about that because we were thinking it would be just people who live in Newton who just want a new house. We wouldn’t be growing our population. It actually turns out we are bringing people in,” Showalter said. “We kind of solved that single-family thing, and it seems like it is working pretty well. Steady growth, we don’t want to build 50 houses, and have they sitting empty. We want to sell them as we build them.”

According to Showalter, 70-acres of corn field in northeast Newton is currently being looked at to build new homes. He said this area can probably contain 150 to 160 lots. He said they plan to work on this area in phases the next four or five years.

“Before I was director, I was a Realtor for 22 years. This area has always been looked as a future growth for housing for Newton,” the Newton High School graduate said. “Years ago, they put 11th Avenue to connect the Belt Line Road and take some of the traffic from Industrial Park away from Berg Middle School. When they did that, they put a large water main and recently, they put a large sewer line that runs through Agnes Patterson park ... it’s got the infrastructure there available.”

He said the NHDC is now concentrating their efforts in increasing the rental options around the city. He said they are looking to develop new apartment and duplex options to give Newton workers the opportunity to live in town.

“With new employers like TPI, Trinity, Graphic Packaging and all the other companies that come into town, people are coming into to town to work,” Showalter said. “This year, you will see two or three projects probably get going and starting.”

Q. Do you have an overall philosophy about your work?

Q. What have you learned at your prior position that will help you adjust to your new role in Newton?

A. Just to work hard and try to bring energy and passion daily to my department. I try to lead by example in this area. We will try and get the best people we can to lead our activity programs and I will do my best to provide them with what they need to be successful.

A. All of my prior positions have helped me grow professionally, and I feel like I have taken bits and pieces from all of my different stops. Knoxville and Keokuk are both districts of similar size and dynamics to Newton; being immersed in day to day functions and activities in those districts I feel has prepared me well for this opportunity.

Having been a head coach for 10 years, I feel has also helped me in this role as I have a good understanding of what coaches and sponsors endure and what support they need to be successful. I have also met and learned from many outstanding people along the way and I have tried to use those positive influences to help me grow both personally and professionally.

The district unveiled a new motto this year — Red Pride Lives Here.

Q. What does that mean to you, and how will it shape your role as athletic director?

A. This motto says a lot about what I already knew about the Newton community, there is tremendous pride throughout this district and the people here are passionate about their school and its activities program. Thinking of this motto alone will help push me every day to do my very best and give my all to this position, as I feel the Newton district and its supporters deserve that.

Q. What do you find the most gratifying about your job?

A. Being involved in sports and activities my whole life. I feel very fortunate that I get to be involved with what I consider to be my passion for a living. There is very rarely a day that I do not enjoy coming to work. I have had jobs before that I did not enjoy, and those experiences have helped offer me some perspective as to how lucky I am to enjoy what I do. I also enjoy the many success stories I get to see play out, and I enjoy trying to make a positive difference in the lives of young men and women.

Q. What is your most memorable professional moment?

A. I have had many memorable professional moments but two really stand out to me: 1. The basketball team I coached at Burlington Notre Dame qualified for the state basketball tournament in back to back seasons. My father was my assistant coach and it was awesome to share that experience with him. It had been a long time since Notre Dame had last qualified for the state tournament, so the excitement and pride exhibited within the community during that time was very special. 2. Being chosen the commencement speaker for the graduation at Burlington Notre Dame after I had left. I felt this spoke volumes about the lasting impression I had left on the school and community and that experience was very memorable and gratifying for me.
