Quiche savory summer

You know it is done when the smells begin to blend together. That is what Megan Pryke, owner and chef at the Hunter Mansion Tea House, said of her versatile quiche as it was coming out of the oven.

The quiche she fixes includes green peppers, ham, mushrooms and cheese, but she said you can put just about anything in as filling. From mozzarella cheese and meatballs to broccoli and cheese, the quiche can please even the pickiest of eaters.

9-inch pie crust

Versatile Quiche

1/4 cup milk

1/8 cup mustard powder

1/4 tsp. onion powder

1/4 tsp. garlic powder

1/2 tsp. salt and pepper

30 minutes | 5 servings

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. 2. Beat together eggs, mix in milk and dry ingredients. 3. Place crust in 9-inch pie plate, if glass or non-stick, do not grease. 4. Add filling of choice (such as bacon, green onion, rosemary) to pie crust in an even layer. Pour egg mixture over filling, leaving about an 1/8 inch at the top for the egg will expand a bit. 5. Place on cookie sheet in over for about 45 minutes until puffy and no more liquid on top. Serve warm or cold as desired.

Mini-Quiche Alternative — cut out four approximately 4 to 5 inch round crusts from 9-inch pie crust and place in individual pie plates. Follow same instructions, dividing up ingredients evenly. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes.

wo decades ago, Carol and Larry Diekema of Monroe were in the middle of a fairly large project — practically building a home around an already existing house.

The Monroe home that sits on Buchanan Street is twice the size of the structure that existed 21 years ago when the family initially bought it.

Additions on the north side of the home include an open kitchen with an island and a dining area.

On the south side, a garage, several rooms and hallways were installed. The staircase leading to the basement was even moved from one side of the house to the other, and what used to be a backdoor alongside the north end of the house is now an open passageway to the current kitchen.

It takes several walks through the house to discover every single room, doorway and closet the couple has installed, which makes anyone browsing through the house want to take up home remodelling.

“I try to use every space I can,” Carol said. “When I walk into a house I can pretty much see what I want done to it. It’s a gift. I want to take advantage

of whatever we can, because I hate wasting space.”

But for all the work that was done to the home during the remodeling stage, a similar amount of labor was put into the backyard.

When they first bought the place, the couple said they couldn’t see beyond the front of the house because weeds were so tall and trees covered much of the north side of the property. Months of labor reduced the amount of foliage, which revealed a large, open yard that Carol would end up taking advantage of.

Several gardens of her favorite flowers and lawn decorations she discovers at craft shows currently make up a portion of the five acres of land they own. A much larger portion consists of fenced areas for her miniature horses, alpacas, pygmy goats, cats and dogs.

However, the yard, the exterior of the house and even the inside looks as if it’s all original, which gives Carol plenty of pride when she explains the work they have actually done.

“When you remodel you have to think of the overall effect on the outside of the house,” Carol said.

“Many times you can drive past a place and people will say ‘oh gosh, they remodeled that, but it didn’t really blend in to the rest of the house.’ I always want my houses to look like they’ve been there forever and have always looked that way.”

The turnaround of this home was truly an overhaul, but it was not the first time the Diekemas dug into the hobby of remodeling. It was actually the fifth time.

The Buchanan Street home is just one of five houses in Monroe they have remodeled in the last 50 years.

The first home was in pretty good shape when they first moved in so they didn’t end up doing a whole lot to it. But they improved the value of the property and sold it, which put them in the market for a new home.

“The reason we bought the second house was actually because Larry said ‘I think we should sell this house. I think we can make a little money.’ I said OK,” Carol said. “We put it up for sale, two days later it sold, and we had six weeks to move out with our three children.”

The week before their move out date, the Diekemas were still in need of a new home, so Carol told her husband to go driving around town one day and not come back until he finds a house.

Larry returned with results and a new home located on Highway 14. The Diekemas remodeled the kitchen in that house and ended up doing far more work to it than their first home.

It was just a few years later when Carol and Larry bought an acreage in town, their third home, and installed a 24-by-30 foot addition adding a living room, bedroom and a bathroom. That home is now occupied by one of their three children.

Another Highway 14 house was the fourth home they remodeled before moving to Buchanan Street.

“Anyways, we finally got this fifth place, came in and pretty much gutted it,” Carol said. “And I loved every minute of it.”

She doesn’t plan on a sixth house, but that’s not because their passion for remodeling has diminished.

“I still have the ideas, but I just don’t have the oomph,” Carol said. “To me it’s the labor of love.”

Q: What was one of your favorite things about Newton growing up?

A: My favorite thing growing up, and it still is today, is the traditions that we had like the Fourth of July parade or the courthouse lighting. I think those are some of the cool things we have to offer.

Q: What is one accomplishment you’re proud of?

I’m proud of what we did at NHDC in the last two years.

What we did was build houses and that hadn’t been done here in a long time. That was a big achievement, and we now have an actual housing stock for people to look at if they want to move here. The park board has been awesome to work with too. We have put in new playground equipment at Maytag Park and Aurora Heights.

Q: Why did you apply for the position at the chamber?

A: It’s a major leadership role in the community, and I thought why wouldn’t I apply for that beSummer 2016 • Jasper County Living

cause that’s what I love to do.

Q: What are you looking forward to in your role?

A: Getting to know a lot of the business owners and to forge new relationships, and the event planning part is what I love to do the most.

Q: Where do you see Newton’s image in the future?

A: I think us becoming more of a suburb of a Des Moines but not losing our own identity as Newton. I think more people are going to be more realistic as they get a little bit older, maybe the young professional type, where they are just married and have kids or want to have kids but don’t want to spend that much money now. That would be the people I could see moving here, building houses here and growing our community.

I would love to see that in the next 10 years.

We’re a very established community with a lot of history, and I’d like to see a lot of things be upgraded.

By Jason W. Brooks Registered dietitians at Hy-Vee grocery stores try to be helpful resource people.

“Lifestyles can change, but it doesn’t happen overnight,” said Emily Ring, one of two dietitian staff at Newton’s Hy-Vee store.

“We just try to help people have an easier time making that change or maintaining positive health habits, and to support good ideas.”

Ring and fellow dietitian Jenny Thompson help facilitate a number of the nutrition and wellness-based programs offered by HyVee.

Participants are encouraged to join the group and walk Monday evenings at 6 p.m. and Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. at Agnes Patterson Park as well as any other days and times that are convenient for them.

Begin — Begin is a healthy lifestyle program that emphasizes eating for good health, weight loss and being physically active.

It’s not a diet, but more of a plan to help with lifelong wellness. It’s available on an individual or group basis and includes 10 sessions.

Sessions can be held instore, out in the community or at businesses as part of employee wellness program. The next group class is planned for the fall, but individual programs can be set up anytime.

Shopping — Other services offered include complimentary shopping assistance available for any customer. A registered dietitian will spend 30 to 45 minutes shopping with customers and helping them choose products that meet their nutritional needs.

Gardening — A community garden is located at the store, funded, in part, by the One Step grant program. Several groups work with Thompson on planting, maintaining, harvesting and eating the garden produce.

Youth — Cooking classes for children are also available and are funded through the Jasper County Great Beginnings grant.

Dietitians lead parents and preschoolers ages 2 to 5

through a cooking class.

Children prepare and eat food using a variety of healthy recipes.

Police take steps for officers, citizens, violators safety in high-speed pursuits

A

high-speed pursuit at 2 a.m. on Interstate 80 is never how a police officer wants to spend his or her shift, but that’s what Newton Police Chief Rob Burdess faced during one of his memorable chases.

“She was driving so fast, she went off the westbound on-ramp and went down into the ditch,” Burdess said. “I thought ‘it’s over, great.’

But then I see her car jump through the grassy area and start to go the wrong way.”

lane and shined his light to alert oncoming traffic. Her car had hit stop sticks early, so the female suspect was driving on rims, sparks flying everywhere. The pursuit hit speeds of 100 mph, and the 14-year-old suspect told police following the chase she had taken her mom’s car, was on her way to see her boyfriend and out after curfew.

There have been four heavily reported high-speed police pursuits in Jasper County since October 2015. One took officers from multiple agencies from Altoona, through downtown Colfax onto the rural gravel roads near Mingo and Baxter during fall harvest. Another in March started with a warrant in Prairie City, went to Pleasant Hill

and hit speeds of more than 100 mph and ended with an arrest outsides Lambs Grove. An overnight motorcycle pursuit in April ended with a foot chase near Kellogg. A May pursuit resulted in the arrest of a man who had numerous weapons in his vehicle.

In all four instances, no one was severely injured and all officers, suspects and community members who were near the action walked away safely. But chases can quickly become dangerous without careful execution by officers.

Burdess estimates he’s been involved in 10 to 20 high-speed pursuits throughout his 19-year career.

PURSUITS | continued from page 21 He said as soon as an officer turns on their lights, the reaction from the suspect driver indicates if there will be a pursuit. But it’s important for the officer to stay focused and not let that immediate rush of adrenaline take over.

“It’s probably one of the most complex things an officer has to do in terms of the safety of themselves, the safety of — to an extent — the driver of the vehicle they’re chasing, as well as the community as a whole,” Burdess said. “The amount of multi-tasking that’s required is amazing.

You have to focus on your senses and what’s important in the moment.”

When a pursuit begins, the initiating officer begins to deliver data, radioing dispatch weather and traffic conditions, descriptions of the vehicle, license plate if visible, the number of occupants, vehicle’s speed and — most importantly — why they are in pursuit.

“All those things are important to the other officers out there, as well as the supervisor who’s overseeing this pursuit, to ensure it’s being done properly,” Burdess said. “At any time we can abort a pursuit. We give an officer the ability to do so for safety purposes.

Prairie City has been implementing a GPS system called “MACH” which allows officers to see where all vehicles involved and assisting with a pursuit are located. Bartello said, until last summer, the computer program was not available for small-town departments like Prairie City.

According to the NPD, the number of high-speed pursuits through Newton’s city limits over the last four years has stayed fairly consistent. The peak was 2013 with eight chases. In 2014, Newton police engaged in five pursuits, seven in 2015 and four have hit Newton since the beginning of 2016.

If it’s a multiple-county pursuit, Iowa State Patrol will often take control. The statewide law enforcement agency has the jurisdiction and radios which can communicate with any local or county department.

Prairie City Police Chief Joe Bartello admits the last six months have given the appearance of more chas-

A recent high-speed chase that involved the NPD originated in Prairie City March 6 and led to Pleasant Hill where shots were fired at Polk County law enforcement. Burdess said law enforcement always acts as though a driver is armed in that situation and if they’re not “it’s a bonus.”

chase but they don’t always have control, as they are reacting to their immediate environment.

Sometimes, Bartello NPD might try to funnel a chase and lead it out of town, or in the case of the March 6 pursuit, keep it from entering town completely.

Newton’s policy allows only two cars to be actively involved in the pursuit at one time and no paralleling. For example, if two cars are going down First Avenue, another vehicle would not be going down Second Avenue to “parallel” the cars. Assisting units may try to predict where the suspect is going to lead, go to that area and set up stop sticks, road blocks and other preventative measures.

Why a person runs from police varies, but police do notice a commonality in the majority of pursuits.

Burdess said many times, violators will run for only minor infractions such as a suspended driver’s license or a simple traffic violation such as running a red light.

But it can also be for a serious crime.

“Some times it just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to put all those people’s lives in jeopardy for that,” Burdess said. “And the officer doesn’t know why they are running.
