Meet Brad Magg Tell us a little bit about yourself: A lifelong Jasper County resident, I grew up in the country west of Colfax.

After graduating from Colfax-Mingo in 2005 I attended the Iowa Culinary Institute at DMACC in Ankeny.

I was very fortunate to grow up in a close, supportive family that taught me the importance of being involved in the community and the necessity of a strong work ethic. I didn’t realize until I was older how little my parents had when I was growing up because they (my mother especially) worked their tail off to make sure my brother and I had whatever we needed. Along the way they instilled the same work ethic in us, which I will be forever grateful for.

Our family is still incredibly close.

My brother Brent, his wife Makayla, and their children Brylee and Becker live about a mile from where my mom, Marilee, still lives and it’s so much fun to get to be part of their lives.

How did you get interested in food and starting your own business? My babysitter Donna Thompson inspired my interest in food, teaching me how to bake and cook as soon as I was old enough to stir with a spoon.

In the spring and summer I got to be by her side at Reed’s Greenhouse where she taught me how to count back change and what customer service is all about. It was these skills along with being surrounded by such supportive people in the community that led me to start baking and selling baked goods in third or fourth grade. Those orders for cakes, cookies and pies led to orders for other food items and by the time I was in middle school I was catering meals for different events.

The small town and amazing family support along with word of mouth led to catering multiple weddings in middle school. By the time high school came around catering equipment was taking over the living room and it was time to become more professional or scale things back.

I devised a business plan where my dad and his friends would help me build a commercial kitchen next to our house in the country. I would operate the business part time, nights and weekends while in high school and pay off the $40,000 bank loan by the time I graduated high school, at which point I would go to college and get a real job.

By my sophomore year of college, business was basically full-time and I was incredibly fortunate to have an amazing group of family and friends that helped me many late nights and weekends to pull all of it off.

I soon realized that catering wasn’t giving me the amount customer and social interaction that I wanted. At the same time I learned that Golda and her husband Melvin were wanting to sell their ice cream shop in Prairie City. At that time it was your typical small town ice cream shop that was closed in the winter and didn’t serve any food. Since Prairie City didn’t have a restaurant at the time, my plan was to serve a lunch special so there was a food option in town during the day and grow sales a little bit but still keep the business small.

Two years later, in 2009, we were named the best tenderloin in Iowa by the Iowa Pork Producers. Immediately business tripled and we went from serving about 300 tenderloins a week to almost 500 a day. So much for keeping the business a small, part-time hobby.

What other business ventures have you been a part of? After my catering business took off in high school I didn’t have much free time to be a kid or spend time with friends. My solution to that as a junior in high school was to start one of the other business ideas I had in middle school and hire my high school friends to work for me.

That way I could work, but still hang out with friends at the same time. That tropical

sno stand was a colossal failure. First of all, 16 year old friends don’t make the best employees for someone who has no HR experience. But secondly, I realized I wasn’t nearly as business savvy as I thought I was. It was a great life lesson that business and self-employment isn’t all fun and games and that to be successful it takes a lot of hard work and risk.

Besides work, how else are you involved in the communities? I’ll never forget the support and encouragement that the community showed me when I had my different business ideas growing up. Elderly ladies would come patronize my tropical sno stand. I knew they didn’t want the shaved ice, but they believed in me and wanted to support what I was doing. Ever since then I’ve firmly believed that you get what you give. It’s also far more rewarding to be part of something bigger than just your little piece of the world.

In high school I served as vice president of the chamber of commerce. I was part of the group of people that worked to get Colfax named a Main Street Iowa community back in 2009 and I still serve on the executive board today. I’ve had the privilege of serving on the Colfax City Council for more than 13 years and it’s been really rewarding to see what teamwork and a vision can accomplish.

When I was in school none of the kids wanted to even consider living in Colfax after graduation and it was common to have empty storefronts in the downtown. Now there is a wait list for commercial space in the downtown and the list of Colfax-Mingo alumni wanting a house or land to build in the community far exceeds what is available.

Over the years, I’ve been active with United Way of Jasper County, as well, all combined almost 12 years as a board member. Seeing all of the needs in the communities and how everyone comes together to help alleviate those just serves as another reminder of how lucky we are to be in Jasper County and surrounded by amazing people.

Why is it important to you to continue to be a part of the area you grew up in? It truly is fun! There are also the obvious reasons of living here and wanting to have a great place to call home. I also believe if you’re going to

RACE TO THE FINISH 72-year-old Jasper County cyclist can’t afford to tire out in Race Across America Jim Jenkins is such a natural competitor he can’t go a normal bike ride without making it a race. If he sees another cyclist on his route, what could have been a leisurely warm-up or scenic ride turns into an impromptu competition that neither himself nor the other rider had planned for in the first place.

Which is why the only way Jenkins can enjoy a bicycle ride is if he leaves his odometer and his watch at home.

“Because I know the routes I ride and where all the miles are. So I eventually start timing myself. If I leave my odometer and my watch at home then I can’t time myself,” Jenkins said. “Unless you see somebody in front of you. Then you have to pass ‘em. You cannot let someone be in front of you.”

The 72-year-old Newton man will get to put his competitive spirit to good use this summer as he and three other cyclists compete in the annual Race Across America (RAAM), a transcontinental bicycle race starting in mid-June. The 3,220-mile race starts at Oceanside, Calif., and ends at Annapolis, Md. By the time this issue of Jasper County Living hits shelves, Jenkins will be on the road with his team. Jenkins participated in a similar coast-to-coast race with a tour group in 2013. It was considered Summer 2022 • Jasper County Living

a “casual ride” that was completed in 30 days. The group traveled an average of 117 miles per day on their bicycles.

However, RAAM is considered a “nonstop” race for competitors, Jenkins said.

Solo racers have a maximum of 12 days to finish starting June 14, whereas team racers have a maximum of nine days to finish the route starting June 18. Solo racers average 250-350 miles a day; teams average 350-500 miles per day.

Two team members at a time will be traveling in 12-hour shifts, Jenkins said.

“We will never quit moving,” he said.

“Somebody will be going at all times. I’ve done a lot of biking and races, but these three I’m with are very experienced in the ultradistance and ultramarathons type of thing. They’re experienced and are actually in RAAM record books already.”

But they have their eyes on another record, too. Jenkins said the team wants to set the RAAM record for mixed teams cyclists in their 70s. But the three had a tough time finding “a 73-year-old stupid enough to say yes.” That is how Jenkins got involved. Through friends of friends, Jenkins joined the team.

Why wouldn’t he? Jenkins is already well-acquainted with cycling competitions and multi-day adventure racing.

They’re already difficult enough, but

RAAM is going to be Jenkins’ biggest challenge yet. Even more so with teammates hellbent on breaking records.

In order to set the record, Jenkins and his teammates must finish RAAM in eight days and 16 hours. Which means the team needs to average a minimum of 380 miles a day. It is a true and gritty endurance test, even rivaling that of the Tour de France, which allows resting every day.

“It’s the toughest bicycle race in the world because of the lack of sleep. It is an endurance test both physically and mentally,” Jenkins said. “The first two days will probably be a lot of adrenaline …

We’re going to start out in the desert and by the fourth day we’ll be going across the Rocky Mountains, probably in snow.”

When the team reaches its sixth and seventh days, racers should feel like they’re in the homestretch. Weather can prove to be a major obstacle in the race, too. If there are major storms blocking their path, cyclists will probably have to stop, Jenkins said. To make matters more difficult, racers cannot change course.

All racers are equipped with GPS trackers to make sure they’re on course.

QUARRY SPRINGS IS MAKING WAVES Development of Colfax park has potential for big economic returns, improvements to quality of life Quarry Springs Park has everything going for it. Ever since it was obtained by Colfax Parks and Recreation in 2015, volunteers have devoted tens of thousands of hours to developing one of the most unique parks in Jasper County. With its long list of projects and its proximity to Interstate 80, there is so much potential.

Doug Garrett, president of the Colfax Parks and Recreation Auxiliary Board, said the 480-acre park has almost 240 acres of spring-fed water, which it utilizes to great affect. The large body of water allows for fishing, kayaking and canoeing, in addition to the 15 primitive camp sites for visitors. The park plans to add more.

Although the park does not have swimming opportunities, Garrett said such ideas are not off the table and it is something the auxiliary board has considered.

But of course such great ideas come with a hefty price tag. Creating a shoreline alone would be costly, not to mention all the requirements from the insurance company.

“Our focus now is on the RV camping and some other things that bring some revenue in so we can further develop the park as time goes on,” Garrett said, noting swimming would be great but it doesn’t

generate revenue. “We’re looking to add 30 RV campsites. We’re waiting to hear on a grant from Destination Iowa.”

If the grant is successful, the funds would go toward a larger scale project to add those RV campsites, water and sewer line installation for a bathhouse and a warning siren to alert visitors to seek shelter when inclement weather conditions approach. But the list of new projects doesn’t stop there. There’s way more to go.

Garrett said parks and recreation want to install an ADA dock to allow people with handicaps to fish from the dock or safely launch a kayak. With that also comes an ADA parking lot and a paved sidewalk to the ADA dock, further increasing Quarry Springs Park’s accessibility.

As will opening up the park behind the Kum & Go gas station, where the board wants to install a dozen picnic tables and a crushed limestone path around the west lake. Nearby will be a game area with concrete cornhole boards, as well as ladder toss platforms and a tetherball pole, Garrett said.

“And we’re going to have one of the larger cribbage boards you ever saw,” he said. “We’re cutting a tree trunk in half,

rounding out the holes. I have that near the picnic area. But the other (games) are going to be beside the road on the west end of the big parking lot here, near where the two disc catchers are.”

Disc golf? You betcha! Garrett said the two disc catchers at the park now are temporary until parks and recreation knows what’s going on at Lewis Club Park. Other community amenities like a 300-person capacity rental venue for weddings will likely be added decades down the road.

Maybe we’ll see some cabins, too.

Or playgrounds or even more RV camping if the demand calls for it. With all those acres of space, the possibilities are endless for Quarry Springs Park.

Garrett said the park’s very close proximity to Interstate 80 — the lake can be seen from the roadway — offers a great deal of economical opportunities. With more visitors coming through Colfax, development of new stores or restaurants could bode well for the small town. The park could also draw new citizens.

“The more things you can have, the more people come and use the park, the

LET THE DISCS FLY With three courses and counting, the sport of disc golf continues to grow in Jasper County For more than 50 years, Frisbees, or discs, have been flying through the air, whether recreationally between kids or competitively in disc golf. The sport of disc golf has been steadily growing and is now starting to take hold in Jasper County.

Whether it is at the 18-hole Maytag Park course, the smaller 9-hole option at the Community Park in Prairie City or the future 12-hole course planned for Monroe at the Recreation Park, disc golf is gaining momentum and fans from near and far.

“In a tournament I played I was beat by three kids that were 15, 16, 17 years old, it blows my mind,” Mike Street, the organizer behind

the creation of the disc golf course in Monroe, said. “You look around here, there are a bunch of kids that would love a place like this to play.”

The origin of disc golf is not clear cut but according to the Professional Disc Golf Association, in 1965, George Sappenfield was working as a recreation counselor and while playing golf one afternoon he thought the kids on his playground could play the game using Frisbees. A year later Sappenfield found out his recreation class

instructor, Kevin Donnelly, had also promoted Frisbee golf for children a few years earlier and the two began working together on the game of Frisbee golf.

From there when Sappenfield became the parks and recreation supervisor for Thousand Oaks, Calif. and sought support from Wham-O, the creator of the Frisbee, for a Frisbee golf tournament he planned to promote.

After that the game only grew. Whether it was small upstarts throughout the

country that began playing on their own or the World Frisbee Championships in 1975, disc golf was here to stay.

Now, there are more than 30,000 members of the PDGA with more than 2,500 events a year. Disc golf is a fun way for anyone, whether an avid disc golfer or recreational player, to take part a wellloved activity with a bit of a challenge while enjoying being outside.

Disc golf is played much like golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, though, players use a flying disc or Frisbee.

The sport was formalized in the 1970s and shares with golf the object of completing each hole in the fewest strokes, or, in the case of disc golf, fewest throws.

A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to a target, which is the “hole.” The hole can be one of a number of disc golf targets; the most common is an elevated metal basket. As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive throw from the spot where the previous throw landed.

The trees, shrubs, and terrain changes located in and around the fairways provide challenging obstacles for the golfer. Finally, the “putt” lands in the basket and the hole is completed.

more people go downtown and spend their money. That’s part of the economic development side of it,” Garrett said. “We’re a regional park at this point.

We’re not just a local city park.

We’ve got people coming from a 100-mile radius.”

While Garrett and his fellow board members want to add plenty of amenities for visitors to enjoy, they also want to

maintain the park’s pristine and natural beauty. Anyone who has ever fished the lake or has traveled past the southern bend in a kayak or canoe knows exactly what board members are referring to.

It’s not uncommon for paddlers to coast through the narrow corridor with their oars laying perpendicular to the kayak. On a calm day, the water is still and clear. Fish can be seen darting through fallen logs, on

top of which are basking turtles.

Ospreys fly overhead in search of their next meal.

The quiet calm is interrupted only by bullfrogs or the splash of a waterbird diving under the surface. Quarry Springs is a vast and open park, and on its windier days it will challenge even the mightiest anglers and boat riders. Walks around the shoreline happen frequently; footsteps are left awash in the sand.

When you get to the south end and the east end you don’t hear it at all,” Garrett said. “If you didn’t look up to see the city water tower you wouldn’t know you were anywhere near civilization.”

talk the talk, you better walk the walk. I’ve invested my life savings in Jasper County so I also have the selfish desire of getting that investment back, and if the stars align and hard work pays off maybe even have a little extra to show for it.

That is one of the many reasons why I didn’t hesitate to get involved when Brittney and Vance Van Houweling reached out as soon as they found out the pharmacy was closing in Colfax. Brittney had been working as the pharmacist for Benzer (the company that bought the 110 year old business from the Weirick family six years ago) and due to numerous corporate missteps none of us were sur-

prised when hearing about the closure.

After losing the medical clinic last year we couldn’t run the risk of not having a pharmacy either. Too many people have worked far too hard to move the community in such a positive direction, I didn’t want to see all of that progress disappear.

Within days it was decided that Brittney and Vance, along with Brenda and Tj Tjaden (the building owners) as well as myself would pool our resources to see if we could keep the business alive. We all knew there would be a lot of hurdles, a mountain of paperwork and documentation but it was far, far worse than any of us had imagined.

It’s taken a lot of work, as well as some amazing volunteers, but

support staff on hand in trailing vehicles at all times for safety purposes. Crew members will also direct the path of cyclists so, as Jenkins put it, “we don’t have to think about anything, we just ride.”

TO DO SOMETHING ‘VERY FEW PEOPLE HAVE DONE’ When Jenkins and his fellow teammate are trading shifts they will rest in a trailing vehicle. It is going to be a grueling race.

And Jenkins knows it, too. For the past few months he has hooked up his bike to a trainer and spent hours pedaling. Of course Jenkins is eager to be in the action, so the trainer “is zero fun.”

“But I have made myself sit there for four nonstop hours without getting off,” he said.

“I had food and water sitting beside me so I didn’t even get off for food and water. It’s just about getting a lot of miles. And you have to get your mindset ready before you get there.

Before you get there you have to decide.”

Jenkins knows full well he wants to do this, and he surrounds himself with people who foster his natural competitiveness.

Training partners keep Jenkins in check and in shape. To them, there’s no such thing as a casual ride. Every hill is a race. An “unspoken” race. Of course, Jenkins wants to be the first up there.

The competitive spark has always been inside Jenkins. He was an avid participant in sports in high school and had even coached a bit. When he was in his 30s and 40s, Jen-

Now that we’ve cleared many of the initial hurdles we’ve been able to start working on getting the other pieces of the business up and going. Brenda’s been working hard getting the shelves stocked with all of the essential over the counter items as well as neat gifts, home décor and fun toys. I however have been getting to have fun getting the historic soda fountain back up and running. I purchased a new ice cream machine that’s different than what we have at Goldie’s and I’m enjoying perfecting a homemade ice cream recipe and creating new flavors.

Chocolate covered strawberry and cherry cobbler have been my favorite ice cream flavors so

kins’ sport of choice was running. But eventually his knees began to wear down. For the past 30 years he has been biking seriously.

Jenkins liked the idea of a sport he could do all times of the year, particularly one that was a bit easier on the knees.

“With the rotation of biking you don’t have the pounding of the pavement with your knees,” he said. “I think (biking) is something you either have or you don’t.

There have been numerous times the thought of quitting has entered my mind on all kinds of different events. But I’ve never quit. It’s just not going to happen.”

Several years ago Jenkins entered into a team triathlon where he planned to only swim and bike and leave the running up to another teammate. He swam. He biked. He was doing well. But when it got time for the runner to finish the contest, the guy didn’t show up. So Jenkins wouldn’t let good time go to waste.

“All I had were my swim trunks and my biking shoes, which you can’t run in because they’re stiff. So I just did the 10K barefoot,” Jenkins said. “So it turns out if I had done it as an individual I’d have taken third in my age group. But they wouldn’t let me do that because I entered it as a team.

But there was no team.”

His feet were beat to hell, he said. Luckily for Jenkins there’s no chance his RAAM teammates will leave him to finish the record all on his own. Although I’m sure he would consider doing it himself if that unlikely possibility were to happen. I mean, the guy

What does the future hold for you? I have no idea! Four months ago I never would have guessed I’d be an owner in a pharmacy and navigating all that it entails. Despite how stressful and exhausting it has been, and completely different from anything I’ve ever done, it has been a great experience and a fun challenge.

As a child my two biggest dreams were to have a stand at the Iowa State Fair and a hot dog cart that I could push around downtown Colfax in the summertime. After starting The Bacon Box at the state fair, that hot dog cart is the only thing that I haven’t crossed of my list so maybe I’ll make that happen one of these days.

Participating in that tour-guided race over 30 days in 2013 was a great experience for Jenkins. He said it was one of the best non-family vacations he ever had. Back then he could take in the scenery with his 23 other riders, all of whom were complete strangers to each other. He knows 2022 will feel differently.

With his feet constantly pedaling away for hours on end every day, Jenkins will put his body to the test and push himself to his limits. Taking in the scenery comes secondary to the competition. Through the aches and pains Jenkins will undoubtedly feel, what keeps him going is that fiery desire to finish.

Or perhaps it’s that willingness to answer “yes” when Jenkins is asked the question: Want to do something insane?

But Jenkins knows he won’t be able to say “yes” forever. RAAM will be a “oneand-done” contest, he said. He has spent almost all of his spare time training. Jenkins acknowledged there are probably very few people his age in the area who are willing to subject themselves to this trial.

“My personal goal is to finish it and to say I did the best I could do, whether I was below the average or above the average that we need,” Jenkins said. “I just want to make sure when I get done that that was the best I could do. I’d like to look back and said I did something very few people have done.”

­The Youngs: A Dynasty of Downtown Barbers

By Larry Hurto — Newton Historic Preservation Commission & Main Street Design Committee Irene Hotger Zickel, in her article “Wooden Candy-Striped Barber Poles,” in my 1992 book, A History of Newton, Iowa, noted that barbers appeared in the city’s downtown as soon as “Newton began to be a professional center.”

“Around town wooden candy-striped poles, with round balls on top, marked the sites of early barber shops,” she wrote. “Today these signs are rare and only a few are treasured possessions of avid collectors of Early American sign art.”

Zickel rightly considered the Young families the “deans of the town barbers.”

They were practitioners of the tonsorial profession here for more than a century.

Young Bros.-F. J. Young and Wm. F. Young, barbers, are listed in the 18991900 City Directory on the east side of the square, at 114 N. Spring St. (1st St. N.).

They were located under the Clark Bank.

The brothers were sons of John D. and Elizabeth (Eckroat) Young, who came to Newton in the 1870s.

Frank Joseph Young (1860-1927) was a native of Geneseo, Ill. An article in The Newton Journal gives some fascinating details about Frank Young’s early life: “He came to Iowa with his parents in 1874, and after a residence of one year in Tama county accompanied his parents to western Iowa, near where the town of Audubon now stands. The boy Frank became a cowboy, and herded cattle over the plains over what was then $4 Iowa land.

Deer and wolves were plentiful in those days, and while out one day on his pony the lad Frank was given chase by two large timber wolves, and won out.

“In 1876, then a boy of 15, Frank Young left the plains and went to Newton, in Jasper county, where his parents had moved in the meantime.”

On Sept. 26, 1883, he was married to Miss Carrie Weseman, daughter of Christopher and Elizabeth (Bergman) Weseman, in Newton. He purchased the resi-

dence of Rev. W. G. Thorn, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church, where they went to housekeeping.

Mrs. Young died in 1887, and on Feb. 27, 1889, Young married Miss Lizzie Broich, of Ottumwa. Both were members of the German Methodist Church.

They moved to Marshalltown in 1901.

Frank’s older brother, William Franklin Young (1852-1940), was born in Ohio. He came to Jasper County in 1875 from Illinois.

He married Dorothy M. “Dora” Walters, a native of Germany, on Sept. 16, 1885.

They lived on North Scott Street (E. 5th St. N.).

According to Zickel, the two brothers eventually moved from under the bank to 205 W. McDonald St. (N. 2nd Ave. W.).

Another brother, Frederick Charles Young (1865-1960), was also born in Geneseo, Ill. He was educated in Geneseo and Marshalltown schools. He moved with his parents to Marshalltown at the age of 9, and to Newton at the age of 21, residing here since.

He was married in 1885 to Laura Marks; he and his wife were living at 423 N. Farmer (E. 4th St. N.) in 1903.

Laura Young died in 1938. On Oct. 29, 1939, Young was married to Frances Wilson.

Young was a member of the Methodist Church. A big lodge man, he was a member of Newton Lodge No. 59, Ancient,

Free & Accepted Masons (past master 1927), a 50-year member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (past noble grand), the Rebekah Lodge, and the Woodmen of the World.

He served as a Newton city councilman in 1939-40.

Fred Young was a barber for more than 60 years prior to his retirement in 1953. He had numerous business partners over the years.

In 1899-1900, Young’s Barber Shop-L. E. and F. C. Young, was located at the 205 W. McDonald address.

In 1910, Fred Young and Joyce C. Suman were partners in the firm of Young & Suman, 207 W. McDonald. Charles R. Bean was also a barber in this shop.

In the 1920s and early ’30s, it was the firm of Young & Bruce-Fred C. Young and William W. Bruce, barbers. They were located at 110 N. 2nd Ave. W. Alonzo T. Watson was a shoe shiner in the shop in 1920.

Leslie Fred Young (1906-1976), no relation to the Young family cited above, came to Newton from Lake View, Iowa in 1941.

Leslie F. Young was born at Atkinson, Neb., the son of Albert and Lydia (Mahler) Young. He was married to Bertha Belle Burroughs May 1, 1930.

According to Zickel, he started out barbering with Dan Masters who had his shop in the Masonic Building. Masters and Young gave free haircuts to many local boys during the depression years of the 1930s.

After Masters’ death, Leslie Young became proprietor of the shop at 210 1st Ave. W. His son, James Leslie “Jim” Young (1933-1988), succeeded him as owner and operator of Young’s Barber Shop until his death from a heart attack.

Jim Young was a 1951 graduate of Newton Community High School and Iowa Barber College.

Both Leslie and Jim Young were members of the Newton First United Methodist Church.
