‘Welcome to Fairadise’

Jasper County Fair kicks off July 20 Newton Daily News The 2019 Jasper County Fair will tell visitors “Welcome to Fairadise” this summer when the fair returns July 20 through July 25 at the Jasper County Fairgrounds in Colfax.

The fair will always focus on agriculture but every year, the fair expands to include fun for everyone with open class competitions and exciting events for the whole family. Here are a few highlights from this year’s fair.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the raising of the American flag.

Animal showing for the first day features the dog show at 4:30 p.m. at the pavilion and the cat show at 5 p.m. in small animal barn for cats.

Open class entries will be accepted until 7:30 p.m.

Friday’s events in the big tent area include arm wrestling action at 5 p.m., bean bag toss tournament at 6 p.m. and Nick Ryan live performance from 7 to 10 p.m.

The first day will begin at 1 p.m. with Fashion Review and Clothing Selection judging at the 4-H/FFA exhibit building. This event is closed to the public but the results will be displayed throughout

The weekend opens with the BBQ Cookoff Contest in the big tent area and features the talents of chainsaw artist Josh Hollon. Open class entries will be accepted from 8 a.m. to noon.

The Fun Pet Show will begin at noon in the big tent area with the Gunny Sack Races at 1 p.m. in the pavilion. The open horse show will begin at 2 p.m. in the horse arena.

Free will offering samples of the BBQ Contest will begin at 6 p.m. A live concert caps off the night from 8 to 11 p.m. featuring Tyler Richardson & The High Bank Boys.

Sunday is also Farm and Public Safety day with demonstrations for fair-goers from noon to 3 p.m. At noon, Sand Volleyball will begin at the horse area followed by the Oreo Stacking Contest at 1 p.m.

Registration for the Pedal Pull will begin at 1:30 p.m. with the event beginning at 2.

The sixth day of the fair will begin with the 4-H/ FFA Market Beef Show at 8 a.m. with the Breeding Beef Show to follow 30 minutes after it’s completed. The 4-H/FFA rabbit show begins and 9 a.m. with open class to follow. The Oreo Stacking Finals will begin at 1 p.m.

Dodgeball will begin at approximately 3 p.m. at the pavilion at the conclusion of the Livestock Judging contest which kicks off at 1:30 p.m.

The annual Farm Bureau Watermelon Feed will be at 3:30 p.m. The 4-H Bucket/ Bottle Calf show will begin at 6 p.m. with the open class to follow. The day concludes with a Teen Dance from 9 p.m. to midnight.

Tuesday is Exhibitors Day at the fairgrounds. Events kickoff with the Swine Show at 7:30 a.m. All exhibit buildings will open at 9 a.m. The next round of Oreo Stacking will begin at 1 p.m. At 2 p.m., the 4-H/FFA Performance Classes will presents. The Dairy Show begins at 4 p.m.

The final day of the fair will feature the Supreme Showmanship competition at 9 a.m. All exhibits will be released at noon. The Farm Credit Services Sale Supper will begin at 4:30 p.m. The final event of the fair will be the 4-H/FFA Livestock Auction at 5:30 p.m.

There are two things Codi Holdeman is very passionate about, agriculture and advocating for individuals with special needs. She wants to share both of those passions at the Jasper County Fair.

She is doing that by introducing a new event at this year’s fair with the Friendship Livestock Show, which will allow local youth with special needs to get into the show ring just like

any other 4-H or FFA member at the fair.

The show will begin at 6 p.m.

classes — three participating in the pigs class and five in the sheep class. Once it’s time for the show, the youth with special needs will enter the show arena with their show buddy. Parents will be allowed in the show ring if they feel it is necessar y.

With the newness of the event, there are only eight participants signed up, but Holdeman is hoping as more people learn about the event and understand what it is, it can grow in the coming years.

“I only had six weeks to plan, market and execute the show.

Luckily next year, I’ll have 52 weeks to do it,” she said.

Holdeman grew up in rural Jasper County and has a long histor y with the local fair. In her nearly 20 years, she has never missed a fair.

She was active in 4-H throughout her youth and held the title of Jasper County Fair Princess in 2017.

She is the reigning title holder for Jasper County for Miss United States Agriculture. The organization is fairly new to Iowa, but when Holdeman learned about it, she knew she had to become involved.

“The organization just hadn’t made its way to Iowa yet. I talked to the woman who is the CEO of it and asked her if she could tr y to get some county titles open for it in Iowa since Iowa is like the most agriculturally inclined state. I figured it’s kind of a big deal for the number one state in agriculture to actually have it,” she said.

As the reigning title holder, she had to choose a platform, which was to advocate for individuals with special needs. This platform has helped her bring the Friendship Livestock Show to life. The idea stemmed from a video Holdeman saw online which featured a similarly arranged livestock show. She immediately knew she had to bring the event to Jasper County.

“I thought ‘wow, that looks amaz-

ing to do. I need to do it,’” she said.

Her first step was to speak with Rhonda Guy, Jasper County Fair volunteer, to figure out how to make it happen this year. Guy saw the event as a great opportunity to show anyone can become involved in the fair.

“Ever yone is welcome at the fair and that even those with special needs can be a part of it,” Guy said.

“Our youth are willing to take the time to help others and share their life skills they are learning. Community ser vice is a large part of 4-H and FFA.” With support from Guy and other members of the fair board, Holdeman took it upon herself to make the show happen. She contacted members from the Ellis County Fair in Texas. They were the first to

include an event for kids with special needs. She said they gave her a rundown on how the show works and what steps she could take to get the ball rolling. Holdeman took it from there.

With this being a new event, Holdeman isn’t exactly sure what to expect but her passion and excite-

ment for the coming show is obvious. She hopes the participants will be able to have fun and the fair-goers will enjoy the new addition at the fair.

“By things I’ve heard from people in the community, just tr ying to get the word out and sharing it through Facebook, it sounds like a lot of other people are ver y, ver y excited for it as well,” Holdeman said.

While the registration period to be included in the show has closed, there are still ways to get involved.

As grand marshals of the Jasper County Fair, Bob and Noralee Warrick will be tasked with representing their home region during the weeklong celebration.

That shouldn’t be too difficult for the husband-and-wife duo born and raised in Prairie City.

Still residing in the small town of roughly 1,700 people, the Warricks, both 73, have a long history with the county fair and speak very highly of its activities, especially those involving youth in 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA).

Bob in particular will be working

his 51st year as superintendent of the fair’s swine department and recently retired as a Jasper County Fair board member after 25 years of service.

As soon as he announced his retirement from the fair board — which steers away from having its acting members become grand marshals nowadays — Bob had a feeling he would be nominated by folks.

“It’s a privilege,” Bob said, noting his father also used to serve on the fair board and was even president of it at one time.

Noralee added, “A lot of people don’t serve 75 years and live through it and get to have that honor. Seventy-five years! Do you realize that?”

Remarking upon the longevity of the Jasper County Fair, Noralee said the families involved in past and current generations have helped keep the tradition alive. It was a family get-together, a real community achievement.

“You grow up with it,” she said.

“Our kids grew up with. You see the same people year after year. And

sometimes it’s the only time you see them during the year.”

As soon as the fair ended, Bob said, it seemed like work for next year’s celebration began almost immediately.

Volunteers knew what it took to arrange an entertaining week of events and attractions for families, so getting a head start helped move things along.

Noralee said sometimes “it takes a village” to coordinate the county fair and make something memorable. And boy do Noralee and Bob have a lot of Jasper County Fair memories between the two of them. Last year was extra special to the Warricks since their granddaughter won grand champion overall in the pigs.

of the swine department was very proud, especially when his granddaughter was awarded the traveling trophy from Bob’s late father.

“That was important for me,” Bob said. Years ago, he, too, showed hogs, along with sheep and maybe a horse at one time.

Nora added, “And I remember watching him (Bob). Oh my gosh!

He had good lambs. He won champion and reserve champion. I even managed to not miss a day of work when I first got out of high school so I could have that day off to watch him show at the county fair.”

Bob said the Jasper County Fair evolved through the years. He watched it happen right in front of his eyes.

“There’s so much more now,” he said.

Noralee said, “Everybody pitches in and makes it go. I don’t know what the other counties do.”

Q&A with Jasper County Fair Queen Korie Jack-Campbell more things. I started out my first year exhibiting one project, and I slowly became more involved. Then, I joined FFA as a freshman in high school so I started doing things with the Newton FFA at the fair as well.

Q. How do you currently participate in the fair?

A. I am in 4-H with the Jolly Workers and we do a Share the Fun skit every year and I exhibit projects in the 4-H exhibit building. I’m also in another Share the Fun skit with county council and then we are doing a duck race for FFA and the Amazing Race for county council.

Q. What did it mean for you to be named Queen?

A. I definitely wasn’t expecting it, I grew up with a lot of the people who I was competing against. Being named queen was a shock and definitely an honor because

growing up, I always looked up to the girls who competed in the pageant, definitely the queens and the princesses that I’ve seen over the years.

Getting to be the person that the little girls look up to was definitely super exciting and a little overwhelming if I’m being honest but I’m excited to see how the fair goes this year.

Q. What are you most looking forward to as the Jasper County Fair Queen?

A. I’m looking forward to getting to work with a lot of the little kids and seeing their excitement when they show their animals or when they exhibit in the 4-H building. It’s definitely going to be a different side of the fair that I have never gotten to see before because I have always been the person looking up to the queen so it will be different.

The 2019 Jasper County Fair is right around the corner but the crowning of the queen and princess took place in June during the Jasper County Fair Round Up & Rodeo.

The Newton Daily News got the opportunity to interview the 2019 Jasper County Fair Queen Korie Jack-Campbell, of Newton, to ask her about her involve-

ment with the fair and what being crowned the queen meant to her. Here is what she had to say.

Q. What is your favorite memor y of the Jasper County Fair?

A. My favorite memory of the Jasper County Fair is just getting to hang out with friends throughout the entire fair, definitely getting snow cones at May’s Snow and Glow and nothing can compare to the satisfaction you

get from getting blue ribbons or moving on to state with any exhibit. Something that is personally memorable for me is that I helped my club paint the Iowa Stone that sits at the Jasper County fairgrounds so I get to see that every single year.

Q. How did you get involved with the fair?

A. I started 4-H at a really young age, and I slowly worked up to bringing more projects and participating in

Many new improvements added for 2019 fair

Every year, those charged with making the Jasper County Fair run smoothly work ahead of the game and behind the scenes on improvements at the grounds. Once again, fairgoers will notice a few big improvements to many of the areas they use most.

“I think some of the newer things this past year that we have completed are in our show pavilion,” fair board president Doug Woebbeking said. “We have installed new LED lights and new bedding in the arena and have remodeled both the men’s and women’s restroom, too.”

If you have ever watched any remodel show on the Home and Garden Network or Do It Yourself channel, you know restrooms renovations can be costly.

Woebbeking said they were both very expensive items but the fair will end up saving money with the new LED lights.

Another addition to the fairgrounds is a picnic shelter in the food court. Donated by the Newton Community School District from Berg Middle School, the picnic shelter will help shield fairgoers from the hot July sun while enjoying not only the tasty food but everything the

fair has to offer.

“We moved it to the food court area at the fair grounds, poured a concrete floor for the shelter and repainted it,” Woebbeking said.

Not all improvements made at the fair grounds are flashy but is necessary to sustaining the property. Just in the past few weeks, a water dyke and drainage tile were constructed on the west end of the grounds to help control flooding issues, which can be a program at the low lying property.

“We haven’t had to test it out yet, but we are excited about it,” Woebbeking said.

All projects completed at the fair are done so through funding from local business donations, sponsorship program and through the funding the fair receives from the county. The fair board also uses all local contractors to complete the work.

“We come up with a list that we think we need to do this year and figure out how much funds that we need and have businesses that support our efforts,” Woebbeking said.

With those projects completed, the board and everyone who helps make the fair go, are ready for another great year at the fair.
