‘Fun for the Whole Herd’

Jasper County Fair kicks off July 20 Newton Daily News The Jasper County Fair is “Fun for the Whole Herd” in 2018 starting Friday, July 20 at the Jasper County Fairgrounds in Colfax. Fair organizers are keeping with tradition and continuing their push to add new elements every year.

The focus is always agriculture at the Jasper County Fair, but a continued push to expand open class and cater to the entire populous has been

the big story of the last few years. Here are some of the day by day highlights coming this year:

Friday, July 20 Day No. 1 begins at 1 p.m. with the Fashion Revue and Clothing Selection judging in the 4-H/FFA Exhibit Building. This is closed to the public, but results and awards will be on display throughout the week-long fair.

The grounds open for live-

stock tack set up and the arrival of horses at 3 p.m. This will be followed quickly by raising of the American Flag at 4:30 p.m. during opening ceremonies.

Animal showing starts quickly on Day 1 with 4:30 p.m. 4-H/FFA Dog show and 5 p.m. cat show. Cattle, dairy, swine, sheep, llama and goats all allowed on the grounds beginning at 5 p.m.

Open class entries will be accepted until 7:30 p.m. on day 1.

Saturday, July 21 The weekend opens Saturday with the BBQ Cookout Contest and Mitchellville chainsaw artist Josh Hollon will be making masterpieces throughout the day.

Open class entries will still be accepted from 8 a.m. to noon in the Open Class Building.

Sunday is also public safety day at the fair. Jasper County Sheriff ’s deputies and local law enforcement will hold demonstrations and meet with fair-goers from noon to 3 p.m.

Other family-friendly events Sunday include the 1:30 p.m. pedal pull registration and 2 p.m. pedal, 1 p.m. Oreo stacking, 2 p.m. kids carnival, 4 p.m. barnyard battles, a 5 p.m. free supper and the night will cap at 7 p.m. with Mutton Bustin’.

Monday, July 23 July 23 is Children’s Day on the fairgrounds. Kids Corner — a reading with Marcus McIntosh — returns again this year at 10 a.m. at the 4-H/ FFA Building.

Wednesday, July 25 At 8 a.m. 4-H and FFA showers will again take center stage with the market beef show and breeding beef show following 30 minutes later.

Livestock judging will also hit the pavilion at 1:30 p.m. at 6 p.m, the 4-H bucket/bottle calf show will take place with the open class show to follow.

The day also includes a dodgeball tournament at approximately 3 p.m. in the Pavilion.

Thursday, July 26 Arm Wrestling returns to the Jasper County Fair at 5 p.m. Friday. Weigh-in begins at 4 p.m.

Something for everyone Open Class is back with new offerings, old favorites

By David Dolmage Newton Daily News Kelly Jo Zach might be too old for 4-H, but she isn’t too old for open class competition at the Jasper County Fair.

Zach, a Newton resident and a longtime supporter of 4-H, has

stayed involved with the fair by participating in open class events.

The fair’s open class, so named because it’s open to anyone, has become one of the biggest draws for fairgoers, organizer Rhonda Guy said.

“We have open class at the Jasper County Fair because 4-H’ers never die — they move on to open class,” Guy said.

In 1986, the fair board voted to bring back the open class competitions — which had been a staple of the fair a half-century earlier — after members from the

Baxter Garden Club approached the fair board about having a flower show. The board decided to re-open the fair contests. Now a longstanding tradition, the open class competition is one part of the Jasper County that’s constantly growing and transforming, with fair board officials always on the lookout for new ideas.

This year Zach isn’t competing. She’s agreed to take over as the open class superintendent for the gardening competition. For Zach, it’s a way to stay involved and give

back to the fair, one of her favorite events.

“When they say there’s something for everyone, that’s the truth,” Zach said. “It’s grown by leaps and bounds in the past few years. It’s just a fun time.”

Although she said she wouldn’t consider herself a master gardener, Zach is excited to see the variety of vegetables entrants bring in for the competition.

“It’s just a nice time to stay connected, that’s just part of our heritage with 4-H, everyone’s OPEN CLASS | 5

sign up organizers have adopted a loose structure that makes it easy to participate in the open class division. On Friday, July 20, Guy and the rest of her crew will throw open the doors at the fairgrounds to receive open class entries from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

They’ll take the rest of the submissions Saturday morning, from 8 a.m. to noon. Once the last entry has been received they’ll dig and start judging the mountain of submissions they’ve received.

“There’s no deadline, there’s no entry fee, they just show and have fun,” Guy said.

Even Guy plans to get in on the action this year — she’s been trying to perfect her pie crust with an eye on winning a ribbon in one of the cooking classes this year.

“It depends on how my pie crusts come out, I’m still practicing,” Guy said.

Oreo stacking, one of the most popular events in the open class, will return for its fifth year this year. Guy and her family were visiting another fair when they first saw the competition, as they watched competitors battle to build the tallest stack of America’s favorite cookie.

They brought the cookie battle to Jasper County, where it has it become a crowd favorite. For three days, heats of eight competitors will battle it out for a gift basket, and a year’s worth of bragging rights.

“It was a fluke, another fair had it, and it just took off,” Guy said. “It’s huge for the kids, they love it.”

Building a tower of mouth-watering cookies isn’t the only open class contest that’s a little different — the fold-n-fly will return to the fair this year as well. Each entrant will have a single sheet of paper to craft their own paper airplane, a distance shootout will determine the winners. With its anything-goes format, open class competitions give anyone a chance to be part of the fun at the fair, Guy said.

After seeing how successful the fair’s coloring contest was, fair organizers decided to open a new contest up for adult coloring, another of this year’s featured contests.

“We didn’t know where to put them so we created a category just for them,” Guy said.

From cookie stacking to paper airplanes to coloring, and yes, even to taxidermy, Guy said there’s something for everyone this year at the

Jasper County Fair.

Over the years, open class competitions have come and gone, some like winemaking, had a brief run of popularity before fizzling out after a few years, but Guy said part of the fun of managing the open class category is constantly staying on the lookout for new ideas.

Organizers are hoping the more excitement they can build in the open class, the more they can encourage Jasper County residents to come out and enjoy the fair.

The category is the fastest growing section of the fair, last year more than 350 people entered a total of 1,400 exhibits in the open class division, the 33rd year of the competition.

“It’s probably the biggest growing section of the fair right now,” Guy said. “We’re not going to turn anybody away.”

Jasper County Fair 5K, 1K fun run returns Sunday Newton Daily News When the Jasper County Fair rolls around, area harriers will have the opportunity to enjoy a special 5K and 1K kids fun run among the traditional fair activities.

The event will be Sunday, July 22 at the Jasper County Fairgrounds, 335 N. Walnut St. in Colfax. The 5K race will begin at 8 a.m. The course will begin at the fairgrounds then loops through town to the Colfax Country Club golf course and will finish back the fairgrounds.

The 1K kid’s fun run will begin at 9 a.m. and the run will circle the fairgrounds area.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three males and top three females.

All kids who participate will receive a prize. All participants will be entered into a door prize drawing.

Following the race, it’s on to old fashioned fair fun with the tractor pull and llama show set to begin at 10:30 a.m. and the pedal pull at 1:30 p.m.

Whats new?

There’s always something different at the Jasper County Fair

By Samuel Nusbaum Newton Daily News Although the Jasper County Fairgrounds are not used every day of the year, they still need to be maintained and upgraded. It’s never too early to figure out ways to improve the fair both in an entertainment and infrastructure standpoint.

According to Alan Guy, member of the Jasper County Fair Board, the fairgrounds was given new fans and a new roof on the show pavilion set to be completed this year.

The horse pavilion will also have new arena lights to enhance the show-goers experience.

As for entertainment, all the old favorites are coming back but at different times throughout the fair, Guy said.

“There will be the Monster Arm Wrestling contest Friday Night, that will be back for its second year ... our open horse show (a horse show people from outside of the county can participate in) will be on Saturday ... Saturday evening we have the barbecue contest ...

the big new one this year is we are having a concert on Saturday night. We will have Damon Dotson. It is a free concert, all ages, at 8 p.m.,” Guy said.

He said the fair will also have Mutton Bustin’ on Sunday, the second JCF 5K on Sunday morning and free dinner Sunday evening and fireworks. Monday will be the parade, Tuesday will be the 4-H horse show and Thursday will have the livestock show.

For the horse pavilion lights, Guy said lighting issues during shows were becoming an issue. The lights had aged to the point they could no longer find spare parts and had to be replaced entirely.

The Newton School District donated lights from the Newton High School softball field to meet the need.

“They had the poles on the old softball diamond and they were redoing Berg (Middle School), and they are building a new softball diamond so basically we got the poles from them and the lights,” Webbeking.

Colfax nurserywoman named JCF Parade grand marshal

By Anthony Victor Reyes Newton Daily News COLFAX — Reed’s Greenhouse has been adding a little bit of color to Jasper County for nearly 50 years.

From bright yellow black-eyed Susans to classic red geraniums, the Reed family has been planting, cultivating and growing a love for agriculture in youth around the area for decades.

Now after at least 65 years of supporting and cheering on the future agriculture leaders from the sidelines at the Jasper County Fair, one special member of the Reed family will be celebrated front and center by leading the annual parade as this year’s grand marshal.

And she couldn’t be any more excited.

“I can’t figure out why they picked me,” Donna Thompson, 2018 Jasper County Fair grand marshal said. “I always went to the parade ... we had a lot of fun at the fair. “ According to the longtime Colfax resident’s daughter Tina Ross, this is the third time a member of the family will serve as grand marshal of the annual fair parade. Thompson’s parents Ray and Helen Reed were selected one year. She even rode in the parade’s lead car when her late husband Ron Thompson was chosen before he passed.

“It has always been about doing things as a family and supporting the community.

Whatever can be done to support the community is done,” Ross said. “I remem-

ber we would get one day to walk through the fairgrounds, walk through all the barns and look at all the animals. She would take us as kids, then the kids she babysat, then it was the grandkids and now it is on

to great-grandkids for her.”

“Every year, Reed Greenhouse donates their flowers, whatever they have left over, to the fairgrounds to help beautify the fairgrounds,” Kendra Halferty, fair board member said.

“It brings colors to the fairgrounds. It brightens people’s days when they see it.

It is something that is great for us that we don’t have to worry about and it is great for the kids that she partners with over the years ... we just wanted to thank Donna and her late-husband Ron for donating the flowers every year.”

Known around town as “grandma” to almost everyone in town, the fair board members said Thompson has made an impact on every person she meets.

“She is just a nice lady that just loves everybody.

She has never met a stranger,” Halferty said. “She gives

wonderful hugs. She always has a smile and whenever she sees you, she gives you a hug no matter where it is at.”

I don’t know what I’ll be thinking,” she said. “I remember when my dad was selected ... when we got done with the parade, I remember my dad said, ‘Where did all these people come from?’ We had no idea how many people come to the parade. That is probably what I am going to say. But I’ll have a lot of kids saying, ‘Hi grandma!’ And they won’t be just mine.”

This year’s parade is set for 7 p.m. July 23.

The county fair kicks off July 20 and will continue through July 27.

Our View: County fair is the future Newton Daily News When the gates open at the Jasper County Fairgrounds on Friday for all the young cattle and livestock producers, a tradition of fostering the next generation of Iowa’s agricultural professionals will continue.

Walk through the fairgrounds in Colfax on any given day of the fair and you’ll see children and teenage 4-H and FFA members washing and soaping, cutting and combing their animals, waiting for the show ring. They ignore the heat and relax, play games and eat lunch in the stalls right next to their beef cattle and mare horses.

They’ve been caring and grooming these animals — some for years — for this very moment with a dedication not seen uniformly throughout the younger generations today.

Farming is not just a weekend hobby they put down during the school week, it’s a

24/7 lifestyle. There’s no doubt many of these youth live and breath the farm, which is why positive reinforcement coming from the county fair’s celebration of agriculture is so important.

We may not realize, but our children pay attention to the

greater world around them.

They may not understand the details of commodities markets and international trade, but when their moms and dads are falling on hard times because the corn isn’t selling as well, they notice and they worry.

This is an uncertain time for many grain and livestock producers. It’s hard to believe a hometown event such as the Jasper County Fair has a stake in the affairs of geopolitics, but all those young FFA and 4-Hers who plan to make their living on the farm will also need a market for their products some day.

Whatever the outcome of tariffs and trade wars, alliances

and agreements, we cannot allow the negativity surrounding these debates to frighten our future farmers or deter them from reaching their ag-career goals. The Earth’s population is expected to hit 9 billion by 2100, and all those people will need to eat. The demand for the products produced here in Jasper County and throughout rural America will be higher than ever.

Q&A with Jasper County Fair Queen Elizabeth Horn

By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Q. What is your favorite memory of the Jasper County Fair?

A. My favorite memory of the Jasper County Fair? I have so many. If I had to choose just one, I would probably say my first participation in the Bryce Leonard Supreme Showmanship contest a few years ago. I represented the equine species and had the chance to meet other 4-H and FFA members and the species they represented. It was a lot of fun to all come together for a great cause and good showmanship. It’s not everyday you get to show a dairy cow, a steer, a goat, a lamb, a pig, a horse and a llama all in the same morning.

Other favorite memories include: reaching milestone goals with my horse projects, watching fireworks from the camper with friends, going to the shower house during summer storms and getting snocones all the time!

Q. How did you get involved with the fair?

A. My first involvement with the fair began when I was very little. My parents put me in the Barnyard Babies contest, where I was named the 1999 “Miss Cuddles.” The first time I remember being at the fair was when I took my dog, Gypsy, dressed her up, and took her to the fun pet show; I loved that!

My older brother began 4-H before me and I thought it was pretty cool, so when I got to fourth grade, I couldn’t wait to start exhibiting at and being a part of the fair. Our family began camping at the

fair, and soon, the fair was the event that we planned our entire summers around!

Q. How do you currently participate in the fair?

A. I am currently a member of the Newton FFA and the Jasper County Equine Experience Club. Through each of these organizations, I have many things to fill my fair days. This year, I will show my horses in both the FFA and open shows. In the past, I have also shown dogs, sheep and goats, as well as communica-

tions and other projects in the exhibit building.

Q. What did it mean to you to be named queen?

A. It meant a lot to me to be named Jasper County Fair Queen. I am very excited. It will be such a joy to for me to serve as queen.

When I was little, my mom, a former fair queen herself, would take me to see the fair queen pageants at the Newton YMCA theater. I loved watching each contestant present to the judges. As a little girl, I

saw them as confident, joyful, friendly, driven young ladies and I looked up to them a lot.

For this reason, to be named fair queen is such an honor for me. Very few young ladies get this opportunity and I am humbled that I get to serve our county in this way.

Q. What are you most looking forward to as Jasper County Fair Queen?

A. The thing I look forward to most as the Jasper County Fair Queen is the people. I love that our fair is a family, friends

and community event — I just can’t wait to see the regulars and meet new attendees.

I am looking forward to seeing the fair through a queen’s eyes and seeing a little bit more of what goes on behind the scenes. Of course, I look forward to representing our fine county at the (Iowa) State Fair, but for now, I am super excited to be able to serve alongside Princess Logan Chandler, the fair board and many others to make a fun and memorable 2018 Jasper County Fair.

Camping at county fair is jigsaw puzzle of people

By Samuel Nusbaum Newton Daily News There is something special about living life under the stars, close to nature with a few good friends or some family. The Jasper County Fair offers that experience with their campgrounds. It is no one-man show, as it takes a village to keep a city of campers functioning.

Jasper County Fair Board member Alan Guy calls running the campgrounds a group effort, between the other members of the Jasper County Fair Board and the campground superintendents, Lance and Stephanie Moorman.

Stephanie Moorman said she joined the staff because she has been a part of the youth organization 4-H her entire life.

4-Hers, she said, strive to “learn by doing.”

“4-H has always been a part of my life. I have kids that are getting involved in 4-H now and it is something I have always wanted to do,” Moorman said.

She said the Moormans are a camping family themselves, going between four and five times a year, especially in the summer months.

She said campground operation at the Jasper County Fairgrounds is pretty much down to a science, the only real challenge is fitting all of the people who want to camp into the limited number of spaces.

cated at the fairgrounds next to the South Skunk River was managed by Reed Heiemstra for 20 years.

“He is kind of the one who created the system to get everybody packed in there and make sure we allow for fire lanes between campers,” Gray said.

He said it is no easy

task to get all the campers into the grounds while using the space effectively.

It’s a big jigsaw puzzle for them. Gray said they get information from the campers during registration — the number of campers in a group, the size of the camper or RV and if they have long-time camping neighbors they’d like to be next to.

“They’ve put this system together to figure out if this person goes here and here and here and puts the puzzle together to fit everyone in,” Gray said.

The campground is able to fit 114 campers with hookups for the RVs and trailers. The spots are typically first-come-firstserve, but they do have exceptions with the fair

queen and her family and someone who is showing livestock. Some return fair-goers have been coming to the same spot for years.

According to the superintendents, the fair is already accepting fees for the 2019 Jasper County Fair as well. He said they are constantly looking to maximize the room they

have at the campgrounds, though he says they have one of the larger active county fair campgrounds in the state of Iowa.

To get a space at the campgrounds, Gray said the fee is $150.

Safety tips for parents of young farmers dren a task on the farm, parents should review the equipment operation instructions. Doing so can help parents reacquaint themselves with tools and equipment they may not have used in awhile, and that can make it easier for them to teach kids how to use such equipment.

In addition, reviewing equipment instructions may provide insight to parents unsure if their children are old enough to use certain tools.

Before children perform any tasks on the farm, parents should inspect the equipment

But millions of people, including children, still live on farms. In fact, in 2009 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that more than one million children under the age of 20 lived, worked or had a regular presence on farms in the United States.

Protecting children from injury on farms, especially those who perform work on farms, is of paramount importance. The American Society of Safety Engineers offers the following safety tips to parents of children who will be spending time on farms.

• Know and obey the laws. Various state and federal laws are in place to protect young children from farm-related accidents and injuries.
