Spring registration now open for all students

It is important to stay on track with your classes in order to reach your long-term goals. In order to be successful with your academics, you must be prepared when selecting your classes at IVCC. It is important to look over the courses that IVCC offers and familiari e yourself with the ones you may be interested in taking and it is e ually as important to meet with a counselor for assistance when setting up classes.

Registration for spring classes began on Wednesday, Nov. 3 with many options. Online registration was available at a.m. and in-person phone began at 10 a.m.

Students are encouraged to consult with a counsel-

or prior to each semester to help schedule their courses.

The counselors will assist students with program reviews, course se uences, and their semester schedules.

Their focus is to help the students with their career decision-making process and to help them select the correct educational programs that will allow them to follow their chosen career path.

Counselors are located in CTC 202 or can be contacted at 1 224-0360 to set up an appointment.

news Ogle named 2021 21st Century Scholar iv Leader

Helena Ogle of Streator is the Illinois Valley Community College Foundation’s 21st Century Scholar for 2021. The 1 th annual 21st Century celebration is available online at www.ivcc.edu/foundation.

Ogle is majoring in nursing and plans to transfer to Loyola University in Chicago to pursue a bachelor’s in nursing and eventually become a nurse practitioner specializing in women’s health.

She co-owns Blue Eyed Rascal Baking Co. in Streator. While at Streator High School, she was involved in the FFA’s “Edible Acre” and the city’s mural project. She is IVCC’s Student Government Association Treasurer.

As the 21st Century Scholar, Ogle received 3,000. Three finalists received 1, 00 and four merit award winners 7 0.

Finalists are Dylan Zupec of Granville, Hope Beelman of Peru and Alex Newman of Oglesby.

Zupec will transfer next fall to Northern Illinois University to major in electrical engineering.

he will turn into a career as an embedded system engineer. He is an IVCC peer tutor for Calculus and Physics I and II. Beelman, a journalism major, is editor of the student newspaper IV Leader and plans to one day be a travel journalist. She helps cra IVCC’s social media on the admissions team’s Hype Crew and is a student worker in Financial Aid. Newman is an accounting major also transferring to NIU. At LP, along with 7-semester honors, he played tennis and basketball. He was on the IVCC tennis team that advanced to the national tournament last spring.

Merit winners were: Sierra Medina of La Salle, an agronomy major also seeking a cannabis production certificate.

She will transfer to Southern Illinois University Carbondale to study crop, soil and environmental management. She is an IVAR volunteer.

Hunter Karun of Peru is majoring in construction welding and hopes to become a union welder.

Karun interned at HCC in Mendota last summer.

Emma Mertes of Utica graduated in the top 12

of an LP class of more than 240. A sports management major, she will pursue a career with a professional sports team. She was co-captain of LP’s swim team, student council vice president and winner of the Sons of the American Revolution Award.

Emily Walker of Ottawa will major in hospitality leadership at Bradley University. She was elected to student government, volunteers for the Food Pantry and taught summer school on a mission to Birmingham, Ala. Currently made up of 37 members contributing 00 annually, the 21st Century Scholars Society rewards IVCC’s most promising returning students. To ualify, students need a minimum 3.

GPA as well as extensive college involvement and community service.

Since its founding in 2007, the Society has awarded over 207, 00 to 1 students.

Tom Quigley recently joined the Admissions team at IVCC in August of 2021.

Although originally from a small town in northern Wisconsin called Peshtigo, Tom igley, who recently assumed the role of Director of Admissions and Transfer Services, immediately felt welcomed by his fellow staff and faculty as well as students.

“Everyone is very nice and friendly,” igley stated. “The free parking has been very nice too!”

Before assuming his role at IVCC, igley began his career in admissions as a student worker in his undergraduate.

“Then, I went full-time as an dmissions Coordinator at SIU,” explained igley. “There I was in charge of recruiting out-of-state students in the southern region of the nited States.” igley is currently attending SI to earn his master’s degree in Workforce Education and Development where he is expected to graduate this December. e expressed that this will be one of his greatest achievements.

By working for SI , igley was able to take classes for free with an employee tuition waiver. e continued to explain why he decided to study the program he is currently in.

“I picked the degree that I could get done the fastest while continuing to work full-time,” igley said.

Outside of his duties as a director, igley enjoys hiking, watching sports, playing video games, and participating in Fantasy Football.

When asked about what a student should know about him, igley responded, “That I like to watch basketball. My favorite team is the Milwaukee Bucks. Calling them to repeat as Champs in 2022 ” e also expressed that one of his favorite parts of the Illinois Valley area is the variety of food.

“I was pleasantly surprised how good the food was,” elaborated igley. “There are so many restaurants to go and try. Let me know what your favorite spot is ” dmissions student worker, Emme Bottom, explained that igley has been fitting in very well in the o ce. She continued, “ e has a new perspective on planning events like Explore IVCC and our past College Fair ” Despite igley recently being hired in ugust, the people at IVCC have been his favorite aspect.

“I think it is a very exciting time to be at IVCC,” said igley. “Go Eagles!”

‘Progress is greater than perfection’

Rachel Edgcomb, Care Coordinator at The Perfectly Flawed Foundation, emphasi ed how the use of labels such as criminal or addict can be extremely hurtful to those suffering with drug use. During the third One Book, One College discussion on Eric Eyre’s Death in Mud Lick, she shared her experience with clients and the emotions they felt when she explained to them that they are individuals with real stories, not just harmful labels.

“When we give them a label, they’re easy to dismiss,” Edgcomb mentioned. “It’s much easier to label an individual as a criminal than it is to think that these corporations are criminal.”

IVCC Librarian Jayna Leipart Guttilla also helped guide the discussion alongside Edgcomb. The facilitators and participants were joined by Founder and Executive Director of The Perfectly Flawed Foundation, Luke Tomsha, as he shared his experiences and opinions on the prompts. “ drug-free world is never going to exist, but we can put measures in place to prevent the damage and the death,” Tomsha elaborated when responding to the first prompt. participant mentioned that they see individuals who use drugs as victims of corporate greed. They referred to doctors and their willingness to

overprescribe which may lead to addiction among many.

Prompts discussed by participants focused on the awareness of legislators, an analogy in the book comparing pharmaceutical companies to drug cartels in Mexico, offering services and treatments outside the criminal justice system, and the importance of educating law enforcement to understand what people experience.

Edgcomb also spoke on a current experience with a Perfectly Flawed Foundation participant in drug court as it related to the discussion prompt at hand.

“It is a band-aid on a very serious issue that doesn’t solve it and ultimately the entire system does need to be changed,” explained a participant when referring to the effectiveness of drug court.

Tomsha explained that law enforcement lacks the medical and mental health training to handle instances of drug overdose while a participant provided examples of alternative positions that may be of more help including social workers and addiction experts.

At the beginning of the discussion, Tomsha stated, “Progress is greater than perfection.”

Death in Mud Lick: A Coal Country Fight Against the Drug Companies That Delivered the Opioid Epidemic author, Eric Eyre, will be attending the Wednesday, Nov. 17 One Book, One College final discussion at 6 p.m. for the author event.

Eyre will be joining via Zoom to meet the participants as well as answer questions from the community.

“He won a Pulitzer Prize for his work that we have been talking about and we think it is such an amazing opportunity to meet him for our students, faculty, staff and community,” explained Grace Norris, Jacobs Library’s Electronic Resources Librarian.

Not only does the topic of this year’s selected book offer students learning opportunities in the fields of general healthcare, such as Pharmacology, Emergency Medical Technicians and Nursing, but also benefits those who are studying Criminal Justice, Psychology, Counseling, Political Government, Journalism, and more.

Former Streator High Supt. joins IVCC’s Executive Administration

Although he had originally planned to become an architect or engineer, Dr. Matt Seaton’s education and professional background in the educational field has led him to his current role as Vice President for Business Services and Finance at IVCC as of June 2021.

Seaton spent 20 years in K-12 schools as a Music Teacher, Principal, and Superintendent before bringing his experience to IVCC. His latest position was Superintendent of Streator Township High School in Streator, Ill. Recently, Seaton earned an Educational Doctorate at Illinois State University along with his Associates in Science from Wabash Valley College and three degrees from Eastern Illinois University: Bachelor of Science in Music Education, Master of Science in Educational Administration, and Specialist in Educa-

tional Administration.

When asked about why he decided to study the particular programs he has degrees in, Seaton explained, “I had a rather influential music teacher in high school and later at community college that helped me find my path.”

As a classically trained vocalist, Seaton has a plethora of experiences in music as well as education.

“I performed as a tenor in college and have performed in a variety of musical genres over the course of my career including opera, musical theatre (both as a vocalist and instrumentalist), and have been a drummer and vocalist in rock and country bands,” commented Seaton.

He is originally from Mt. Carmel, Ill., but loves Streator and the surrounding areas as his family has thrived since arriving to the Illinois Valley area in 2014.

“The proximity of the IV to opportunities for our kids has been awesome,” elaborated

Seaton.

Despite his many awards throughout his career from scholarships to Illinois Teacher and Dissertation of the Year, Seaton’s favorite accomplishment is his family consisting of his wife of nearly 20 years, Jill, and their six children.

At IVCC, Seaton has thoroughly enjoyed getting to know everyone and described all as extremely gracious and welcoming.

He indicated that his fellow faculty and staff are committed to bettering students as well as the college.

“It is clear everyone wants the best for the organization and is willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen,” mentioned Seaton.

When asked about what a student should know about him, Seaton stated, “I’m available and committed to making their educational experience the IV Leader Photo/Hope Beelman best it can be at IVCC. My door is always EXECUTIVE ADMINISTRATION AT IVCC open.”

news Retired IVCC counselor creates $5,000 scholarship for single parents

Retired Illinois Valley Community College counselor Kathy Notbohm of Tonica recently created an endowed scholarship through the college Foundation.

Notbohm’s ,000 scholarship will award single parents; preference will be given to survivors of domestic violence.

Notbohm retired from full-time counseling at IVCC in 1 7 a er 2 years. Before IVCC, she was a resident advisor at Northern Illinois University and for six years prior to that a junior high and high school physical education and health teacher in the Dundee School District.

She grew up on a farm near Mount Vernon, Iowa, and attended a one-room schoolhouse. Her mother Eloise was a teacher and her father Rudolph a farmer. She earned a bachelor’s from the niversity of Dubu ue and a master’s from NIU. Notbohm served on the board and was a volunteer for the domestic violence shelter in Streator, DV S S,

now known as Safe Journeys. She was one of the first two women to become volunteer “Red Coats” at the former Illinois Valley Community Hospital and also helped the hospital’s social work department.

She delivered food for the Illinois Valley Food Pantry and served as a trustee for Tonica’s village board. While wintering 16 years in Casa Grande, ., she volunteered to drive elderly individuals to doctor’s appointments and collected items to take to the recycling center.

Regarding Notbohm’s scholarship, IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said, “It is so gratifying to see another philanthropic retiree give back so generously to our college. t ,000, athy’s award will be life-changing for a single parent.”

Two community members presented with IVCC Spirit Awards O.J. Stoutner of Peru and Jack Cantlin of Earlville were honored for their decades of service to the Illinois Valley Community College Foundation Monday.

Cantlin joined the Foundation in 1 2 a er being recruited by then-President Ralph Bowermaster and has served 29 years, including 12 as Vice-President.

Stoutner was recruited to the board in 1999 by Bowermaster and Bill Strong and has served 22 years, including three as Vice-President and 13 as President.

Their leadership has helped grow Foundation assets to $8.6 million today. In the past two years alone, the Foundation has provided nearly $950,000 in scholarships and program support.

Stoutner and Cantlin supported capital campaigns for the Community Technology Center and scholarship endowment and both endowed their own scholarships with wives Susie Stoutner and Kathy Cantlin.

Executive Director of Community Relations and Development Fran Brolley said, “When I reflect upon Jack and O.J.’s history with our Foundation, the words that come to mind are integrity, principle, rectitude, devotion and decency. Thank you for making our Foundation part of your remarkable lives of service.”

Adventure awaits: What’s on your bucket list?

SAMANTHA STRAITH Straith expressed that a goal on her bucket list is to explore Greece. She finds the architecture and its history to be beautiful. er love for Greece and even Italy began when she read Greek mythology books when she was younger.

LUKE ELIAS Elias explained that skydiving is at the top of his bucket list as it is a popular activity by many. The thrill and excitement that comes from skydiving is what first drew Elias to it.

In attendance was Dr. Gary C. Roberts who will be appointed as Vice President for cademic ffairs beginning in January of 2022. We were happy to welcome him into the IVCC community and are very excited to work with him starting in

January.

There was a public comment made at the meeting regarding what the Board intends to do with the fitness center that was sadly shut down due to Covid-1 . We hope to provide more information about that soon.

SG also recently held a meeting with the President’s council on Oct. 21. ere, we discussed goals each individual member has for the school year. The members presented very well thought-out reachable goals. ll of these goals focused around what else IVCC could do to promote inclusion, provide resources information, make campus a fun environment and make it feel like a second home. s a reminder, the Board meets the second Tuesday of

Hispanic Heritage Month events recap

Sept. 1 through Oct. 1 is known across the globe as ispanic eritage Month. People from all Spanish-speaking countries come together to celebrate their culture, their people, and all the trials and tribulations their communities have had to face in order to get where they are currently. ere at IVCC, the ispanic Leadership Team, led by Sara Escatel and seret Loveland, put together three major events on Campus, being led by students, for the enjoyment of not only IVCC students and faculty but for the Illinois Valley community.

One event focused on the individual ex-

periences as a ispanic in the Illinois Valley.

Students within the ispanic Leadership Team created PowerPoints talking about what their future goals were, their positive and negative experiences, as well as their families and traditions.

On Oct. 13, Mendota Folklorico Dance group, “De Colores,” came to campus and performed a series of traditional dances in the auditorium. People of all different ages, backgrounds, and ethnicities were present in enjoying the wonderful performance.

The cast of “Grunella” includes Madeleine unter as Grunella, Macy nderson as Enchantra, Zoey Starkey as Snow White, Reid Rynke as Winston, David Zuniga as Prince Charming, Emma Elmore as Cinderella, and Rattryna im as the Magic Mirror.

The crew members for this production are

Due to the constant changes in COVID mitigation, for the safety of the audience and cast, this production will be recorded and streamed on the IVCC Fine rts ouTube Channel. The premiere will stream on ouTube the week of Monday, Nov. 22.

Men’s, women’s basketball return er a yearlong delay caused by the coronavirus pandemic, men’s and women’s basketball has returned to Illinois Valley Community College. er opening up at home on Nov. 2 against Morton, the Eagles return to action at home on Saturday, Nov. 6.

The women’s team hosts Illinois Central College at 1 p.m.

Saturday while the men play ICC at 3 p.m.

Sophomore returners for the women’s team include enie Coleman, lyx Carls, Christine Senica, Maddie Grandsart, Maddy Freeman, Paige Champlin and Meredith Sidwell.

Sophomore returners for the men include Braden Edington and Reggie Loury.

Golfers qualify for national tournament By the IV Leader Staff

For the second year in a row, the IVCC Men’s Golf Team has ualified for the Division II NJC National Tournament.

The Eagles team score of 2 placed them in third place behind Bryant Stratton 17 and Black awk College 22 .

IVCC sophomore Ian Roach led the way for the Eagles by shooting a 227 over the three days. Roach medaled for a fi h place overall finish.

The National Tournament is being held at Twin ills Country Club in Joplin, Miss., from May 17-20, 2022.

Roach, a Putnam County graduate, said the team’s goal this entire year has been to qualify for the national tournament.

“It felt really good to ualify for nationals again for the aspect that we will have a chance in the spring to play well at nationals, and there are a lot of memories that go along with going there just like last year,” Roach said.

Desipite his fi h place overall finish at regionals, Roach was disappointed with his play in the tournament.

“Personally, I was not very happy with my performance in the last two rounds of the tournament since my ball striking was very poor a er shooting a very good first round,” Roach commented.

Roach shot a 6 in the first round, followed by an 0 and a 7 .

Ryan Dulin, a freshman, scored 234, while freshman ydin Folker shot a 23 .

Both sophomore Ben Cyr and freshman Jack Lockard carded a 23 .

Still, the Eagles’ third-place finish ualified the team for the national tournament in May, which the golfers are looking forward to.

Last year, the team finished 14th at Nationals while Roach individually placed seventh.

“We expect to play better and place better than we did last year,” Roach said.

“Obviously for me I’m going to go try to win the thing because I’m 100 percent capable.”

“But overall, I think we’d all like to think to ourselves that we played good golf and were proud of it a er the tournament’s ending.”

Roach, who would like to transfer to a four-year school to play golf, has set individual goals as well for a four-round score.

“I’d like to win it with flying colors and be around -12 under for the whole tournament,” he said.

Men’s soccer ‘special’ season ends By the IV Leader Staff It’s been a long road for men’s soccer at IVCC. Since the team started competition in 2016, no winning season had been recorded.

That is, until 2021, when the team finished 13- overall and placed second in the NJCAA’s Region IV. This year, the Eagles put together what team members call a “special season,” even though it ended Oct. 30 in a 9-1 loss to Richland College in the Midwest District Semi-Finals. Richland, locatd in Dallas, Texas, won the NJC Division III championship last year and is ranked No. 1 in Division III again this year.

Sophomore Pumi Maphumulo of South frica scored the lone goal for the Eagles.

The Eagles also suffered heart-breaking loss to arper on Oct. 23 in the Region IV championship game. The Eagles had defeated arper twice earlier in the season before suffering a 4-2 loss in the final.

“The other team just wanted it more,” Maphumulo said. “They ran harder, tackled harder, kicked harder and just did everything better than us in the second half and that’s what won them the game. A great lesson for the freshman to take into the next season.”

Maphumulo led the team and the nation throughout the season. e finished with 7 points, 32 goals, 1 assists and 10 shots. e led the nation in points, goals and shots while coming in fourth in assists for NJC Division III soccer. is performance also has led to other recognition.

Maphumulo was named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJC Region IV Division III Men’s Soccer Player of the Year.

“I was very happy with the recognition that I received this year simply because I always believed that I could do what I did this year, and I knew that I just had to believe in myself and trust that things would work out,” Maphumulo said. “ aving a great team definitely helped for sure especially considering how high the level of competition was and these boys made everything so much easier for me. I’ve never been one to play for individual awards but at times it is nice to know that all your hard work behind the scenes has paid off.”

Third-place finish Women’s tennis places at national tournament By the IV Leader Staff

IVCC’s women’s tennis team captured third place at the Division III NJCAA Nationals in Peachtree City, Ga., Oct. 28-31.

Overall, the team captured 17 points for a third-place finish behind Oxford-Emory with 33 and Suffolk County with 19.

Brianna Strehl and her doubles teammate Olivia Woods won first ll- merican at No. 2 Doubles.

In addition to her first-place finish at No. 2 doubles, Woods also won second ll- merican at No. 3 singles.

Coach Julie Milota described the first-place finish at No. 2 doubles for Strehl and Woods as a “marathon three-setter” on Facebook, adding “couldn’t be prouder.”

Teammate Clara Ferrari won second All-American at No. 6 singles and finished in third place at No. 3 doubles with teammate aley Schmit .

IVCC will lose sophomores Ferrari, Schmit and methyst Ernat from this year’s team. Returners for Milota’s s uad include freshmen Strehl, Woods, and arissa Et enbach, who played at No. 1 singles all season and won Region IV Player of the ear.

Volleyball season wraps up IVCC’s volleyball team finished their 2021 regular-season campaign with a 5-23 record.

Sophomore setter Paige Champlin ranked 6 th nationally in NJCAA Division 2 with 6. 6 assists per game.

Sophomore aylee Hammerich led the team at kills per set with 1. 4, closely followed by ubrey Garettson with 1.71. Champlin led with 628 assists and 31 aces.
