LATP Announces Partnership with Advisory Firm to Reduce Business Owners’ Taxes
ccording to the IRS tax year 2018 is expected to be a banner year of confusion for them and many taxpayers. Immediately after passage of the Tax Reform Act of 2018 the IRS issued new guidance to clarify the deductibility of prepaid real estate taxes, business meals and entertainment and interest on home equity loans. No one understood the vague language contained in the Act. And all of this was done within the span of less than 12 months. So what group will bear the brunt of paying more taxes in 2018? “It really depends on individual tax profiles” said E. Pete Lewis, CPA and owner of Lewis & Associates Tax Planning, Inc. (LATP). “The only constant that I can see is that many business owners who were paying at the top 39.6% tax rate in 2017 will still be exposed to pay at the top 37% tax rate in 2018.”
all of their time doing one thing: Structuring tax plans to be implemented by CPAs . “We will continue to provide IRS debt relief and other services to those who need it but this new collaboration will help LATP become more effective in its tax planning effort for our high net worth business clients“, he said.
Pete is a knowledgable, proactive and trusted advisor focused on helping his clients lower their tax obligations. He tells it like it is and is a pleasure to work with. — Dr. Sakina & Mansoor Bajowala, Kaneland Allergy & Asthma Center, North Aurora
Mr. Lewis feels that business owners at the top tax rate continue to have little relief unless they sit down and structure a tax plan customized to find ways to avoid unnecessary taxes. He said “the demand for relief among my business clients has become so great that my firm has joined forces with a California based wealth management group organized for the sole purpose of helping tax professionals find little known tax breaks.” Mr. Lewis said the Elite Resource Team which is a dedicated group of tax attorneys and financial advisors spend
Mr. Lewis’ clients don’t hear from him only at tax time. LATP focuses on tax planning, preparation, IRS debt relief and audit representation. So he and his staff need to understand each client’s business to match their transactions with available tax savings. He is always mindful of the fact that he is providing a service to people who need to partner with someone they can trust. “I think of my clients as friends,” he said. “Some have been friends for more than 20 years. I believe that each individual deserves the best service that can be provided.” Mr. Lewis, a Geneva resident began his tax practice in 2008 after spending more than 30 years working in tax management positions for Chicago area law firms, public accounting firms and corporations. When he first graduated from college in 1972 accounting and tax was not his first choice. He entered the field of Journalism and worked as a newspaper reporter for about five years. In 1979 the accounting bug bit him. So he went back to college to earn an MBA in finance and later became licensed as a CPA and Enrolled Agent Admitted to Practice Before the IRS.
Mr. Lewis also teaches at Chicago area universities as an Adjunct Professor of Accounting and Finance and conducts SCORE (Service Core of Retired Executives) sponsored workshops and live webinars marketed by educational groups on tax matters. Mr. Lewis continues to grow his business by helping local area business owners and individuals with their tax problems. Call for information.

String it up at Austin’s Violin Shop
A
ustin’s Violin Shop makes, repairs, sells and rents the four orchestral stringed instruments— violin, viola, cello, and bass—and offers a wide range of music, stands and accessories. Their courier service travels throughout the Chicagoland area.
Owner Patricia Austin began playing the violin in fourth grade and continued to study music at Northern Illinois University. There, she also studied violin-making with Mr. Harold Walker
Happy Holidays from our Family to Yours
in DeKalb. Patricia began teaching Suzuki violin to students in 1975. In 1981, she and her husband, Dana, opened Austin’s Violin Shop in a ramshackle house on Wheeler Road—very humble beginnings! In 1986, the Austins moved their shop to its current location on Wheeler Road. Their business continued to grow, along with their family of eight children. The location presents easy access to several area studios and schools. Working out of their home also gave Patricia the opportunity to be close to her children while teaching full time. Dana converted the garage into a working shop for meeting with customers, as well as for luthier services. Upon Dana’s passing in 1994, Patricia took over the violin shop and gradually transitioned from full-time teaching to running the shop. The Austin’s oldest daughter, Honna, currently provides lessons in the studio two days a week, as well as at a large strings studio in Batavia. Daughter Holly graduated from the violin-making school and is now a luthier at the shop, and son Joel aspires to become a luthier.

Relationships Over Dollars Hazen Insurance builds business around client-first approach
After spending nearly 30 years building a successful insurance agency, it takes a significant amount of confidence to start over. And yet, that’s what the team at Hazen Insurance did in 2009. That was the year the team went from being a Captive Agent — an agency that represents just one insurance company — to an independent agent. Being independent allows the Hazen team to truly match their client’s needs with the right solutions. “Starting completely over in 2009 was a major decision for us,” Penny Hazen said. “We were a very successful Captive Agent in Illinois and one of the largest in the state even at the time. But we knew that the value of being an Independent Agent was the right thing for our clients and decided to take a leap of faith and start over from zero.” While it required a leap of faith in the beginning, Kelly and Penny Hazen, and the rest of the Hazen team, quickly realized starting over from zero was absolutely the best decision they could make. “We were and are incredibly blessed to have the support of our loving community and our clients who have been so incredibly loyal as they have followed and supported us through those hurdles, just like they know and trust us to do for them,” Penny said. That community support was thanks to Hazen Insurance spending decades focusing on building deep relationships with each of their clients in order to give them the best combination of products and services possible. The Hazen Insurance approach is best summarized in their unofficial motto that drives each member of their team.
“Small enough to know you... large enough to serve you,” Penny described. “We would rather earn our client’s relationships for a lifetime, rather than have customers for a couple of years. We love, value and appreciate every single one of our clients/ friends who have and continue to support and stand by us year after year.” Those years of focusing on the St. Charles community stretch all the way back to 1976, when Kelly Hazen’s father moved the family from Pennsylvania to the place they would call home ever since. St. Charles is also the community where Kelly met his wife, Penny, and where they raised their family. So not only is St. Charles where the Hazen Insurance team focuses its efforts, it’s also where the Hazens have called home and supported numerous community organizations over the years. “We have always lived, worked and supported the future growth of this beautiful town on the west side of St. Charles,” Kelly said. Insurance can be treated in a very straightforward, almost clinical manner. And that is why Hazen Insurance stands out, because their clients are so much more than just names, numbers and a source of revenue. They truly are friends, colleagues, and fellow members of the same community. “There is great value in having a local agent that lives in the same community you do and breathes the same air you do, as it means we can understand your needs better,” Penny said. “We drive the same roads and sit through the same traffic, except we have almost 100 combined years of experience in how to protect you correctly when life’s uncertainties happen. The premiums you pay when you call a carrier directly are exactly the same as when you have a local agent so why wouldn’t you want someone locally to stand up for you on your worst days?”

Give Your Pets The Best In Vet Care
L
oyal Companions is a pet-centric veterinary practice providing state-of-the-art care in a FearFree environment. This results in more pleasant visits for beloved pets and their people. Loyal Companions is passionate about elevating the care your pet receives to the next level. Dr. Vicki Petsche has practiced veterinary medicine for 25 years and has worked in several veterinary hospitals in the Chicago suburbs, as well as in Miami, Fla. She settled in the Fox Valley area 19 years ago, and has been practicing in this community ever since. Loyal Companions Animal Hospital and Pet Resort is a full-service veterinary hospital that also offers luxury overnight lodging, day care, grooming and training classes.

The style of the building allowed Dr. Petsche to design the animal hospital and pet resort of her dreams. As an added bonus, there is a spacious yard for the lodging and day care pets to get outdoor exercise. Dr. Petsche’s love for animals began at a very young age. She started riding horses when she was five years old, and throughout her childhood spent her time caring for her family’s pets — dogs, cats, hamsters, horses and a goat. It was here, as a little girl in rural Michigan, that she decided to become a veterinarian. Dr. Petsche has aligned herself with the national Fear Free initiative and has achieved the distinction of becoming one of the first Fear Free Certified Practices in the nation. To become Fear Free Certified, Loyal Companions had to pass a review by the Fear Free board, which is composed of well-respected behavioral and medical specialists as well as architects. They evaluated the hospital design, the approach to medical care and client education practices at Loyal Companions. A board member came to tour the state-of-the-art facility and evaluated Dr. Petsche’s Fear Free approach first hand. Only 25 other practices in the nation had been granted this distinction. All hospital staff members have received additional training to obtain their own individual certifications as Fear Free Professionals and they are continuing to advance their knowledge in the Fear Free approach. Special attention is paid to the smallest details to ensure every pet’s experience at Loyal Companions is calming and pleasant. The Fear Free certified staff employ numerous
scientifically based techniques to keep pets - and their people – calm and stress free while they receive veterinary care. Pets never leave the security of their owners during an office visit. Owners help the team at Loyal Companions minimize their pet’s stress and anxiety. Often pets can receive medical treatment without even noticing if they are focused on tasty treats. Scientifically proven to produce calming effects, speciesspecific calming music and pheromones are diffused into each room. To ensure pets equate only positive experiences with coming to Loyal Companions, owners are asked to bring their pets to their appointments hungry so tasty treats or food can be provided throughout the exam and procedures. Loyal Companions is proud to be an AAHA Accredited Hospital. They are in the top 12% of hospitals nationwide and because they hold themselves to a higher standard, they have voluntarily entered the accreditation process. To achieve accreditation, Loyal Companions was evaluated on over 900 rigorous standards of veterinary excellence and passed with flying colors. Loyal Companions strives to be champions of excellent care. Loyal Companions is also a Cat Friendly Practice, certified by the American Association of Feline Practitioners. Loyal Companions rolls out the red carpet treatment for your feline friend giving them their own entrance, own exam rooms and own treatment space so your cat will never have to see, hear or smell a dog during their visit. By decreasing the stress and anxiety of patients Loyal Companions is able to achieve a higher level of care for your feline friend.

This year they have also expanded their offering of natural and eco-friendly products.
Originally established in 1977 as a Rug Doctor carpet cleaning rental store, in 1983 the business transformed into the vacuum repair and vacuum retailer we know today — Best Vac. Owner Ron Vohs teamed up with his wife, Kelly, in 1998 to purchase the St. Charles business.
SM-CL1609210
Today, Best Vac offers vacuum cleaners from leading manufacturers like Miele, Riccar and SEBO, as well as a full range of parts and accessories for all brands of vacuums. Best Vac operates a full-time, in-house service department and services all brands of vacuums, as well as home environment products such as air purifiers. Ron credits Kelly with the firm’s expansion into all-natural products. Now more than ever, you’ll find things at Best Vac you won’t find anywhere else in the area. Replace your dryer sheets with all-natural and chemical-free wool dryer balls. Made from pure New Zealand wool, these dryer balls are hypoallergenic and save time, energy and money. What about Moso Bags made from bamboo charcoal? They remove odors, allergens and harmful pollutants naturally for up to two years. Moso is fragrance-free, non-toxic and keeps children and pets safe. Best Vac now also features a host of natural and chemical-free cleaning products, and has added essential oils and diffusers. Ron and Kelly personally use
all products before offering them for sale and only offer the best to their customers. The Vohs have built their business with a philosophy of building relationships and helping customers rather than simply selling to them. They focus on solving problems and offering a solution that makes life easier for their customers. Every homeowner has a different cleaning situation — pets, allergies, carpet type, hard floor surfaces, and of course budget. The Vohs and the other experts at Best Vac take the time to demonstrate the features available on a variety of models, showing you how they perform and letting you make direct comparisons between them. The flooring industry has changed dramatically over the years and it is now imperative to choose the correct vacuum for your home. The wrong vacuum can damage your floors and there are even carpet manufacturers who void their warranty if certain brands of vacuums are used on their products. Like any business owner, the Vohs have experienced their share of challenges as big box stores and Internet dealers descended on the marketplace. But there are no substitutes for experienced and

knowledgeable staff who can help you make the best decision for your needs and the opportunity for you to try before you buy. Also, Ron explains that just because they are a small, familyowned business does not mean they are more expensive. In fact, Best Vac sells better products at similar or even lower price points. For example, you can purchase a high-quality Americanmade Riccar vacuum from Best Vac for as low as $249.
Despite increased competition from big box stores and Internet retailers, 2015, 2016 and 2017 were three of the best years in Best Vac’s 41-year history. “We continue to offer quality products, competitive prices, and we service what we sell,” Ron said. The Internet is no longer a cheaper option. Internet retailers can no longer absorb paying for free shipping and paying the sales tax on Internet orders, so prices are increasing. Also, a number of companies are not allowing their products to be sold online in order to maintain the integrity of the product. With local firms like Best Vac, far more of your tax dollars remain in the area to support the community compared to big box or online companies. “A good vacuum is designed to last a long time,” Ron said. “Unlike some newer manufacturers that don’t even make parts for their vacuums, Best Vac supports and services all of the products we sell with our on-site experienced service technicians.” To find your perfect vacuum, visit vacguys.com or take a test drive at 2015 Dean St., Suite 3, in St. Charles.

STERLING BANK MAKES IT’S HOME ALONG THE ST. CHARLES WATERFRONT By SHERRI DAUSKURDAS
Tom Russe has been a banker for more than 30 years. He worked his way up through the big guys – 18 years with Chase, seven years with Inland – honing his skills. There, he came to realize all the things he loved about banking: the relationships, the partnerships, the ability to solve a problem for a customer that changes their life. He also discovered all the things he didn’t like about what mainstream banking had become. “At many larger institutions, it’s just about availability,” he says. “There’s no wiggle room for anyone. And if you don’t fit in the box, it’s a quick no.” Today, Russe is at the helm of St Charles latest edition – Sterling Bank – at home in its brand new building along the Fox River. And this community banker couldn’t be happier. “Sterling ownership truly believes in community banking,” he says. “It’s a privately held bank, started by business people from manufacturing, construction since its initial arrival in St Charles. It’s relationships and knowledge versus prolific “Sterling Bank believes in the identity of St Charles, distribution and convenience,” he says. “Everybody and its history,” Russe says. “From day one we knew we wants to be a success, they work hard, but maybe don’t didn’t want to be a tenant. Our kids have chosen to stay. It’s been very good to us.” So Russe and Sterling went to work on a new building, a part of the city’s First Street Development project. The new bank opened in October at 10 Illinois Street. “We knew we wanted to be on the river,” he says. “And working on the new building has been a pleasure.” Russe and Sterling worked with local businesses including Maurice McNally at McNally Construction Management, architect Dan Marshall, Bob Rasmussen of JRD Development, the City of St. Charles and the St. Charles Historical Society.

But if you’re looking for something more than an ATM on every corner, that’s where Sterling Bank really shines. “When you have the opportunity to chart your own course, our customers are looking for not only competitive pricing, but also the value of a true relationship,” Russe says. “Does my banker know me? Understand me? Is there a lot of turnover? Will they work with me? “There has to be a vision of longevity to it,” he says. “Let’s do things right with solid long term relationships. When you pick up the phone, you’ll get a live person, a real answer, and access to decision makers. We want to help you succeed.
“All these local people have nothing but the best intentions for St Charles,” he says. “We couldn’t be happier. We really feel that way. And we want people to feel special and valued when they walk in. Whatever their need is.
“And our employees are all local, active in the community, with loads of banking experience. So we aren’t really new.”
“Part of our brand is our building. We are focused on relationships that can be life long, even generational. That’s a concept that used to drive the banking industry,” he explains.
“Its not rocket science,” he adds. “It’s very simple, but it’s not easy. You have to work hard. You have to expand relationships one at a time by understanding people’s needs.
And while Sterling Bank may be built on old-school philosophies and traditional banking values, it doesn’t mean it lacks the modern conveniences. “Technology
“We are committed to the city and the communities we serve, and look forward to making the city part of the Sterling Bank History.”
As for Russe, he’s happy to find a place where he plans to be for the remainder of his career, right here in St. Charles.

Open The Door To A Unique Shopping Experience Discover eclectic home décor, custom furnishings & architectural salvage at Little Red Barn Door By Aimee Barrows Blending old pieces with new is the hottest trend in home décor, and if you’re looking to add some unique touches to your space, Little Red Barn Door in Geneva is the place to go for original architectural salvage and other custom items. At the boutique, which is located in the historic Berry House on Third Street, you’ll find everything from candles, artwork, custom-made pillows, furniture and many other eclectic goods. The inventory is constantly changing, so the store is always updated with exclusive items. Owner Sylvia Torres, a St. Charles resident, opened the Little Red Barn Door in December of 2017, just in time for the holiday shopping season. She says that business has been good, which she attributes to the increased interest in customizing homes with one-of-a-kind décor, as well as the warm, personalized attention she gives each customer. “We like to keep current with the trends in our industry. We’re a small space, so keeping it fresh and new is important,” she explains. “A lot of people tell me my store is a nice addition to the area. My prices are reasonable and the store is very personable. I’m always here, so I get to know my customers.” Torres has always loved decorating and designing, but says she never thought she’d own a home décor boutique. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Northern Illinois University and later spent almost 20 years working in her family’s business, Legna Iron Works, where she was in charge of accounting, marketing and human resources.
But thanks to the encouragement of her family and friends, Torres decided it was time to leave the family company and pursue her passion. And because of her connections with the steel company, she’s able to bring vintage industrial pieces into her shop. Many of the items available in the store are also locally-made. “I’ve always felt I was creative and I love decorating,” she says. “People tell me that I have a good eye and I’m able to bring items together nicely. We are very fortunate to work with a great group of talented local small businesses that help us stock the shop with all the beautiful, unique items we carry.” Torres, who owns Little Red Barn Door with her husband Tony, initially began selling her unique pieces online. But the orders began coming in so quickly that Torres was spending a lot of time and money on packaging and shipping. It was then that she knew it was time to open a brick and mortar location.
“Her parents got married in that church, and she came in with a photo of her parents’ wedding, in that church with those pews in the background,” Torres remembers. “Just seeing how happy she was to be able to purchase something with so much meaning to her family was really cool.” Our biggest obstacle has been the lack of storage space; however, we’re setting up our warehouse which will include a showroom perfect for hosting shopping events, paint parties, classes and more,” she says. “I’d like to grow and learn from all our experiences during the first year in business so that we can become better. The ultimate goal over the next five years is to be a big part of Third Street and to be recognized in the industry.” Little Red Barn Door is located at 227 S. Third St., Suite 205, Geneva and is open TuesWed 10am-5pm, Thurs-Sat 10am-7pm & Sun 11am-5pm. Call (630) 402-0072 or email littleredbarndoor@comcast.net for more information, or visit the store’s Facebook page.
Once Torres decided to take the plunge, her next step was scouting an appropriate location for her store. Even though it’s small, Torres says the second-floor space fits right in with the other retailers in the Berry House. “We knew this type of shop needed to be in a special kind of area, and Third Street had everything we were looking for,” Torres says. “I felt that this type of store wouldn’t fit into a strip mall. When we came across the available space in the Berry House, we jumped at the opportunity.” And in the few months since Little Red Barn Door has been open, Torres has already experienced some special memories with her customers. She says that a customer was able to purchase a church pew from the Congregational Church of Batavia at the store.

The 20th-century American novelist Ralph Ellison once said, “Education is all a matter of building bridges.” At Bridges Academy, this sentiment is the philosophical core of the school. A bridge represents transition, connection, movement, overcoming, an growth, and as such it has always been the school symbol. “Education is so much more than ‘rigorous academics,’” Erin Murphy-Kaminski said. “It’s about teaching our kids to make connections, engaging their minds, sparking their creativity, building their sense of community, while also leaving room for curiosity, wonder, and individuality.” That philosophy was born in 1992, when Jan Dangles founded the school. It began as a preschool only, due to the great need for additional, alternative preschool options at the time. Dangles selected the building because it had previously housed a preschool, and because it was originally built in a home, it had a comfortable feel to it. “We view each child as a unique individual and one to be respected for that uniqueness,” Dangles said of the school’s philosophy. “Bridges Montessori Academy offers an environment that allows for the natural unfolding of the child and builds a foundation for lifelong learning. We are committed to working as a partner with parents in an atmosphere of respect and concern to ensure a meaningful experience.” The Montessori classroom is a carefully prepared environment designed to facilitate the development of the children’s sense of personal empowerment and independence. “It is often called a ‘children’s house,’ and it is very different than the traditional teacher-centered classroom,” Dangles said. “Our location is on a residential street in St. Charles and looks very much like a large home instead of an institution.” BRIDGES MONTESSORI PRESCHOOL/Bridges Academy 716 Oak Street St. Charles IL 60174
Dangles has been involved in Montessori education for more than 30 years, and Bridges has been accredited by the American Montessori Society for over 25 years. Serving as a testament to the quality education available at Bridges, most of their teachers have been on staff for many years, as well as entrusting their own children to be educated there. Erin Murphy-Kaminski serves as the Director of Bridges Academy, the portion of the school focused on children in grades one through five. “We use a combined approach focusing on the Montessori philosophy along with individualized learning, flexible grouping and hands-on experiences,” she said. “Our approach to learning is one that is child-centered. We try to instill a joy in each student, while also emphasizing respect, empathy, compassion, responsibility and creativity.” That approach has led to many of their former students returning for visits, to volunteer in the classrooms, attend school performances and programs, and to simply share their lives with their former teachers. “It is so rewarding to watch our Bridges Alumni turn into wonderful people and parts of our community,” Murphy-Kaminski said. Both Dangles and Murphy-Kaminski love when not only former students pay a visit, but prospective families as well. “We welcome visitors who are interested in experiencing the love of learning that we enjoy,” Murphy-Kaminski said. “Please call to schedule a visit.” PRESCHOOL CONTACT: Jan Dangles (630) 513-9742 Bridges1992@gmail.com

A lifetime of finding the perfect flooring Family
Gary Titiner, owner
Gary Titiner grew up in the flooring business, working at his father’s store from the time he was a small child. After getting his degree in 1993, Titiner began working full-time for his father, learning all the aspects of the industry. When his father retired in 2010, Titiner started Family Flooring America. Family Flooring America is a full-service flooring store with an extensive selection of carpet, hardwood, ceramic & porcelain, LVT, paint, area rugs and window coverings. In addition, they offer installation on most all of their products. While the company is only eight years old, Titiner considers it to be built upon a 52-year family legacy of experience and knowledge. He said that he is in the flooring business because, quite simply, he loves it. “Every day provides new experiences with customers,” he said. “I love the fact that we help make our customers’ homes more beautiful.” As for having a store in St. Charles, Titiner said it was a no-brainer. “St. Charles & Geneva, in fact, the entire Fox River valley were always a good location for my father, and has been for me as well. The whole area is a place where people understand and appreciate excellent quality, in both product and service, and who know a great value when it is presented to them.” he said. Titiner believes that his business is unique in that it is a perfect marriage of large and small. First and foremost, it is a locally owned family business. “We care about the community because we live in it” he said. “There are many places you can buy flooring, but there is no other place that cares as much as we do. We live here and we work here. This is our community; this is our home!” At the same time, Family Flooring America is part of a 500+ store co-op that provides everything that a large-scale, national retailer
would want. With access to first-class marketing, advertising and training materials, he is able to effectively promote the business and train his staff. National pricing on his products allows him to pass on the savings to his customers, and not be the prey of the big box stores. As part of the larger co-op, the store can offer customers many programs that a small retailer would never have, such as the “Confidence Plus Warranty” that allows customers to replace their floor at no charge, even if it is because they simply don’t like it. Titiner said he realizes that for many people, picking out new flooring can be a very daunting task. Together, with his extremely talented and experienced staff, he promises they will continue to go out of their way to make the process as easy and as fun as possible. Titiner said that his secret to success really isn’t a secret. “It is simply exercising the long-proven practice of taking great care of customers and providing them with a great value,” he said. “At the end of the day, we want to give our customers great flooring at a great price, and an overall great value. We want to earn the fact that they came to us.” “We have a tagline here that we are very serious about—’Family Flooring America, Where Friends Send Friends,’” he said. “We know that if a customer will send their friend to us, that we have done our job well.”

his return from the Navy in World War II, the business began as one of the first distributors of the Thulman wood burning fireplace. When Thulman turned into the Majestic Fireplace Company, the business took the name Majestic Distributing. Originally a strictly wholesale company selling the Majestic Fireplace to builders and heating contractors, we opened our first retail outlet in 1963—and House of Fireplaces was born. Kevin, who started at the bottom sweeping the warehouse after school as a kid, worked summers and winters while going to school. He started working full time shortly after graduating college with a degree in business
Showroom manager Kevin Sandell represents the third generation of the Sandell family business. Kevin manages the retail side of the business while his father, Mark Sandell, manages the wholesale side. Founded in 1953 by Stanley Sandell after
administration, and took over showroom operations in 2010. “We have been selling fireplaces since the very beginning of the air-cooled prefabricated fireplace,” Kevin said. “We have seen the industry go from one manufacturer to hundreds, from three fireplace choices to thousands. Throughout this evolution, we have continued to adapt to the changing tastes by adding more options, brands and choices for the customer.” We offer the best fireplaces, and with the most knowledgeable employees, the best possible customer service before and after the sale. We go the extra mile in customer service. One of our funniest and most memorable experiences happened when a customer came in with his wife to look at gas logs. He really liked the gas grills, but she was not interested in the grills. So they looked at log sets and left. A couple days later, the wife returned, saying she would
like to buy the grill for her husband as a surprise birthday present. She bought the grill and asked us to hold it until they came back for a log set. Later that week, the husband returned by himself and said he would like to buy the grill without his wife knowing about it. Somehow, we managed to hold him off on buying the grill. It ended up being a great surprise for him when they came in to get the gas log set, and he saw the grill with a big bow on it. Looking ahead, we are excited to discover how the fireplace industry will change and what new things there will be. We would like to see an increase in our in-house manufactured products, perhaps including a millwork shop for in-house custom mantels or a metal shop for high quality chase tops.

T
he partnership is made up of Chris Bishop and Rob Mondi, and each have a name for themselves in the local business community.
Chris Bishop has been selling real estate since 2003, and has been a St. Charles resident since 2002. He specializes in residental real estate, including luxury homes and new construction, as well as commercial real estate. “When you work with me, you will receive a knowledgeable and professional real estate agent, a committed ally to negotiate on your behalf, the systems in place to streamline buying your home, and the backing of a trusted company, Keller Williams Realty,” Bishop said.
The duo is not content to rely only on the experience they have already gained. They are focused on constantly continuing their education in order to better serve their clients’ needs. And, due to their entrepreneurial spirit, they have plans for their own growth by building a business plan that will add staff, allowing them to streamline their workflow and improve their ability to add more value to every interaction with every client, colleague and partner. “Our time spent in the business, our focus on continuing education, our entrepreneurial spirt … this just makes us more valuable every day,” Mondi said.
Rob Mondi has been a commercial broker since 2012, and prior to that worked in Merrill Lynch’s Capital Markets Group in tax-oriented leasing, acquisition financing and business valuation. Suffice it to say, Mondi has a range of experience in working with projects of a variety of scales. Together, the pair merges their backgrounds in real estate, financing, business acquisitions and valuations, to go along with their integrity, work ethic and focus on their clients. “It’s a culmination of successful careers merging together,” Mondi said. “We’ve been doing this for a long time, with lots of experience in a wide range of ways.” Now that the pair has elected to work under the Keller Williams banner, the sky truly is the limit for Bishop Mondi. “We selected a brokerage that will allow us to grow in ways no other brokerage offers,” Mondi said. “By offering residential, commercial and business brokerage services, this truly makes us a one-stop shop.”

Marketplace Ethics has been awarded to businesses annually since 1996 and embodies the BBB’s mission of advancing trust in the marketplace. Their mission is to move people.

But this is not about selling their customers a vehicle and repairing the ones they already have. It is about much more than that and it is certainly much more than two simple words. They want everyone who is in contact with their team members every day to be MOVED. Moved in many ways, but always for the better — better than before their engagement with them — whether it is financially, spiritually, emotionally as well as professionally. “We want to move people to a better place in their lives just by dealing and working with us,” said founder, President and CEO Emir Abinion. “Imagine the impact we can have on people’s lives with this as our focus. This is what it truly means to be of service.” Recently, Abinion accepted the Better Business Bureau’s 2018 Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics. tremendous accomplishment. Abinion began selling vehicles to help pay for college and fell in love with the business. His first dealership was Landmark Ford in Niles, IL for 16 years. Vice President, Predriven Vehicle Director and Partner Shakeel Omar, operated a successful pre-driven automotive retail store in Chicago, IL for over 16 years. Long-time friends, Abinion and Omar met when they were selling cars together at Golf Mill Ford in the mid-1980s. Their focus toward providing superior customer service and excellent ownership experience has allowed Fox Valley Auto Group to expand over the years.
Abinion added a new Volkswagen dealership in West Chicago in 2006, which in 2016 moved and expanded to a 40,000 square-foot facility in St. Charles. In 2012, Volkswagen awarded Abinion the Volkswagen Diamond Pin Award, a recognition bestowed on only four dealers in North America and 70 Volkswagen dealers world-wide, for their overall commitment to the brand and its customers. They were again recognized in 2015 with membership in Volkswagen’s Customer First Club. This accolade recognizes the dealership as a top performer in customer satisfaction on a national level. The two things that drive Abinion are finding ways to make it better and more convenient for the dealerships’ customers to do business with them, and how can they serve the community better. Fox Valley Auto Group has three locations and approximately 160 employees. Together, Fox Valley Auto Group sells about 5,000 vehicles and services over 54,000 vehicles annually. Abinion said the secret to his dealerships’ success is to treat people like he would want to be treated and to be a value through service to his customers and community. “This comes first before any vehicle is sold or serviced,” he said.

As the needs of local businesses have changed over the years, so has the Chamber. “We are a membership-based organization which provides tools, resources, programs and events to enable our members to build relationships, increase brand exposure, enhance their knowledge and skill, and engage with the community,” said President and CEO Jim Di Ciaula. Di Ciaula entered his role at the Chamber at the beginning of 2018, bringing his 35 years of experience as a financial services professional. His years of focusing on strategic planning and implementation, as well as ensuring the best customer experience possible, has already served him well in his relatively new role. He has already recruited more engagement from the local business community, helped advance the mission of the various committees, and is continuously seeking feedback and additional ways the Chamber can provide even more value to not only local businesses, but the residents those businesses serve. All of this collective effort is designed to help both businesses, and the people within them, continue to flourish. “Membership in the Chamber, coupled with member engagement will lead to personal growth and business opportunity,” Di Ciaula said. With Di Ciaula and the team focused on continuing to adapt to meet the changing needs of the community, the 650-plus member organization is in the process of adding a new segment to better serve businesses of all sizes. Care for all family members, including pets The Moss Family Funeral Homes is a fullservice, family-owned and operated funeral services business, but it is far more than a typical funeral home. Owners Bryan and Mandi Moss provide death care, funeral and cremation services, and offer a choice of urns, caskets, guidance, comfort, hugs and love. As you will see it is all the extras that they provide to the St. Charles community that makes them stand out. The Moss family takes pride in the fact that your loved one never leaves their care. However, their differences are clear even before the passing of a loved one. Bryan encourages people to pre-plan, investigate their options early, even shop around. He said it is important for people to plan the funeral process ahead of time so they are able to truly explore the options available to them. The Moss family encourages people to view their facilities, learn about their process and their philosophy. They do this because they are confident that they provide a level of care and service unmatched in the area. Theirs is the only funeral home in the Fox Valley area that owns and operates both a human and pet crematory. Most other funeral homes outsource this service. Through a division of Moss Family Funeral Homes, Moss Family Paws was created to care for pets. The funeral home added its pet service in May of 2013 following the completion of its cremation center in Batavia. That was also the time that the Moss family finished its renovations of the St. Charles location, which was a multi-year total renovation project. Bryan and Mandi purchased the location back in 2009, when they acquired the Norris Funeral Home as the Norris family entered retirement. Bryan attributes the death of his father of a heart attack at age 42 when he was a young man of 16 years old for the reason, he selected this profession. He is often asked how and why he got into the funeral home profession, and his first response is that his profession is a calling. The experience of losing his father led him to a passion for caring for people dealing with Page 30 • Insight • December 2018 | Special Advertising Section
death, loss and grief. He wanted a profession where he could help others going through the same experiences he had gone through. The Moss family purchased their first funeral home facility in 2001 in Batavia, when Bryan was just 27 years old. He knew that he wanted to own and operate his own funeral home at some point in his career, and it just happened that the previous owner wanted to retire, giving him the chance. “I was just a kid, and everyone assumed my father was in the business with me. I had to earn the trust of the families we served,” he said. “Our dedication to help and serve the loved ones’ families shone through, and these same families are our biggest referral source.” Though their business has changed and grown over the years, their philosophy of incorporating the highest level of respect, dignity, ethics and value to their service has remained the same. Bryan attributes their success to their ability to have options for every family. “There is not one package or one direction that fits every deceased individual or their families,” he said. “We think outside the box and create a celebration of life that is unique to the individuals we serve.”

MORE THAN
JUST TEETH Modern Dentistry focuses on the patient just as much as their teeth

to lead an exceptional team at Modern Dentistry which has separated them from other dentist who offer implants. Modern Dentistry is a pioneer in several techniques, both clinically and in the dental laboratory. Their methods and product are used by skilled implantologists around the country.
The team at Modern Dentistry in Sugar Grove and Yorkville intends to become the largest provider of dental implants in Chicagoland. Based on their progress so far, they are well on their way to achieving that goal. Modern Dentistry was opened in 2001 and serves Yorkville, Sugar Grove and the surrounding areas. The Sugar Grove location was opened in 2007 as a center for dental implant and sedation therapy. While both offices meed the general dentistry needs of the community, they are one of the few dental providers in Chicagoland to offer comprehensive dental implant therapy for patients who are missing teeth, and intravenous sedation for patients who are afraid of dentists and dental procedures. Dr. Joseph Kim graduated from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and has since received his fellowships from the Academy of General Dentistry and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. In addition to is formal education, his experience acting as the implant course director for multiple implant companies has equipped him Page 32 • Insight • December 2018 | Special Advertising Section
As the first implantologist in the United States to offer the LeClerq-Martinez implant bridge, Dr. Kim has made it his goal to make denture replacement a realistic option for patients who have been suffering from loose and ill-fitting dentures. Many patients have never been given the option of replacing their removable dentures with dental implants, as most dentists do not provide full arch, non-removable dental implant solutions. Those that do often rely upon the minimal mechanical requirements relegating their patients to expensive repairs and replacements. While denture replacement can be expensive, the benefits are worth it. Biologically, dental implants can help prevent bone loss, thus minimizing disfiguring defects in the jaw and face. Functionally, patients can eat the foods that they
used to enjoy, such as salads, corn on the cob, fresh fruits and vegetables, and other nutritious meals. Their speech often improves due to having stable teeth again. Their self-confidence rises, as they don’t have to worry about embarrassing situations due to loose dentures. Dr. Kim also started his own dental laboratory in order to keep costs down. While some clinicians are charging over $50,000 for a single arch of dental implant restorations, Modern Dentistry is able to offer an even better solution of almost half the price. The team at Modern Dentistry is not only cost-conscious, they are conscious of the impact their services have on their patients. “Whenever we change a patient’s smile, we affect their self confidence, their health, and their overall happiness,” Dr. Kim said, “Our profession is truly rewarding to our patients and to us as providers. We understand that we are working with people, not just teeth.” That focus on the person is what has driven Modern Dentistry to continue to innovate, continue to focus on ways to better serve their patients, and it comes through in the way they treat everyone who enters their doors.
