Nicole Middleton examines some of the one-of-a-kind plates she designed. She can custom design plates and ornaments.

During a time of year that should be filled with wonder, awe, and joy, some feel nothing but immense pressure to create the perfect holiday. Running from place to place in search of the perfect gift, to the most beautiful home décor, right down to the holiday menu, leaves some people feeling depleted and inadequate. Forgetting what truly matters. But for Nicole Middleton, the holidays are a special period to tap into her creativity. Colliding the past with the present in terms of tablescapes and unique gifts, Middleton has found a niche that brings the joy back into the holidays, not only for herself but for everyone around her. What started out as a crusade to save one of Princeton’s historic stores, Hoffman’s Patterns of the Past, from closing, has evolved into a genuine love of all things vintage and repurposing items of the past into useful, sustainable heirlooms for today’s generation. Not just for the holidays, but throughout the whole year. “No locals were really interested in coming in and saving it,” Middleton said as she discussed how she became the owner of

Hoffman’s. “I felt like there’s a lot of history here. It’s a staple to this town, an anchor. People come from all over, so I convinced my husband to take a leap of faith.” That leap of faith has unveiled Middleton’s love of high-quality, vintage, home goods that tell a story. She said it’s so satisfying being a part of someone’s story whether it’s helping them replace a long lost family heirloom or helping them find something that takes them back to their childhoods. “Ninety five percent of all our ornaments and holiday dishes have been here for decades,” said Middleton. “It’s all vintage. It’s a great, sustainable way to get your Christmas dishes, or just to spruce up your table.” When it comes to creating memorable tablescapes and holiday home décor, Middleton thrives on simplicity and the unique. “I like an eclectic table,” Middleton said. “I want to mix and match. It doesn’t have to be all Christmasey-holiday. Maybe some reds, greens, and golds, but I like to mix it up. Nothing too formal.” People aren’t setting the holiday table with a dinner plate, a salad plate, a soup bowl, a butter tray, and a gravy boat. Rather, Middleton says people tend to gravitate toward exceptional serving pieces that can be used all year. of inventory from previous owners, Middleton says old is new again. “I’m watching the younger generation,” Middleton said. “They want one serving bowl from a pattern that kind of matches whatever they already have. Or they want
some additional bowls that they already have that they can use all year long. We have plenty of patterns and inventory so it’s easy to mix and match.” To make the holidays even more festive, Middleton said she’s been enjoying finding random plates that don’t belong to a set and creating vintage, tiered serving trays as well as decorative plate walls.

Christmas lights help set the scene for the holidays and enhance the atmosphere of gatherings and celebrations. While it may seem like Christmas lights have always been part of holiday festivities, they’re actually a relatively modern addition. Electric Christmas lights were the invention of Edward Hibberd Johnson in 1882. Johnson was an associate of Thomas Edison, and Smithsonian notes Johnson hand-wired 80 red, white and blue electric light bulbs and placed them on a spinning Christmas tree in his New York City home. Johnson’s lights were likely inspired by the first strand of electric lights that Edison hung outside of his New Jersey laboratory two years prior. These Christmas lights gave rise to more displays in subsequent years. President Grover Cleveland put up the first electrically lit Christmas tree in the White House in 1895. While electric lights may have been pretty, they were very expensive for the average person. In the 1920s, companies like General Electric started crafting safe, affordable and ready-to-use light strings for consumers, paving the way for more widespread adoption during the holidays. HL26B215

Give your
Christmas spirit a boost These activities will help you get in a festive mood Story by Shannon Serpette Sometimes getting into the holiday spirit requires a little work and some strategy. Stress, busy schedules, financial concerns, and a long to-do list can leave you feeling more like the Grinch than Cindy Lou Who. If you can’t seem to get into the Christmas spirit this year, here are some places that might fill your heart with it. SHOP AT A SMALL BUSINESS Peru mayor Ken Kolowski recommends a stop at any of Peru’s small businesses if you need an instant dose of holiday spirit. Small businesses are known for being friendly, appreciative of each customer’s support, and welldecorated for the holiday season. Plus, seeing other shoppers preparing for the holidays and chatting with familiar faces from the community can boost your mood. “From our restaurants to our small business retailers, Peru is always full of holiday spirit,” Kolowski said. GO TO A CITY’S CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION Many communities in the Illinois Valley, whether big or small, have their own Christmas parades or events that can help put you in the festive mood. “A few years ago, we started a new tradition of a nighttime lighted parade,” Kolowski said about the city of Peru. “It’s on Dec. 5th (this year), and it has grown from 15 floats to over 40 floats. It has become a very enjoyable and must-see event over the years.” A short drive away is LaSalle’s Rotary Park, which is a popular stop during the holidays because of its annual Celebration of Lights. This drive-through light display started small and kept growing until it See SPIRIT, Page 12 10 October 2026 | Illinois Valley Living | A Shaw Media Publication

became a family-favorite tradition each holiday season. Laura Loch of Peru enjoys going to the light show for two reasons – it offers family holiday bonding time and her business has a light display there. “The Celebration of Lights is always a Christmas tradition, plus I’m able to see my Loch Countryside Kennel display. I am so impressed with how much work they put into this every year,” she said. HIKE IN THE SNOW AT STARVED ROCK STATE PARK A winter hike at Starved Rock State Park is as close to being in a winter wonderland as you’ll get. If you don’t enjoy crowded places or want to avoid indoor germs that can hit hard in winter, a walk at Starved Rock State Park can be ideal. As soon as conditions allow, spectacular ice falls form at Starved Rock and are well worth the hike, if you’re able.

REVISIT A FAVORITE HOLIDAY MOVIE Watching an old family favorite Christmas movie or your own personal favorite holiday flick can put you in a festive mood. It’s even better when you invite family members or friends to watch it with you. “I absolutely love National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” said Laura Loch of Peru. “Even though the movie is funny most of the time, I also get family vibes from that as well.” TAKE A RIDE ON A HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGE Throughout the Illinois Valley, there are several opportunities to go on horse-drawn carriage rides during holiday celebrations in various cities. The Celebration of Lights in LaSalle, for instance, will once again feature carriage rides and opens for the season on Nov. 8th. While Loch has yet to go on a horse-drawn carriage ride in the Illinois Valley, she has fond memories of the one she rode in Chicago one year. “It’s absolutely beautiful during the holidays,” she said.

Ashton Thurber, an employee at The Cheese Shop ‘n Deli in Ottawa, stands behind the counter, ready to serve customers.
Eat, Drink and Be Merry Story & Photos by Shannon Serpette
Edible gifts are a big hit at the holidays During the holidays, it can be hard to think of the perfect gift for a loved one. It’s difficult to determine what they might already have, and you don’t want to spend money on something they won’t use at all. That’s where food and beverage gifts come in handy. An edible gift or a carefully selected bottle of wine is always welcome. The Illinois Valley is full of businesses that offer edible gifts that will light up any recipient’s holidays. Most
of these businesses also offer gift cards, which are popular to tuck inside Christmas cards and help ensure each person finds exactly what they want. If a loved one on your shopping list is a fan of fine cheeses, or if you have committed to bringing a platter of food to a holiday party, the Cheese Shop ‘n Deli in Ottawa is a great stop to make. Cathy Cole, office manager at The Cheese Shop, said some of the shop’s top-selling cheeses that would make a great Christmas gift include aged cheddar, blue cheese, pepper jack, Parmigiano Reggiano, and pecorino Romano.

The shop carries much more than cheese – it also sells Volpi salami, Troyer summer sausage, and Wholey frozen fish products, and many other types of jarred or bagged foods that would go well in a gift basket. If you’re going to a Christmas party, bringing an assortment of ready-to-eat items is always appreciated. “Edible gifts are practical for the holidays because it allows a host to have instant appetizers for guests while waiting for a meal or in-between meals. It allows for easy entertaining of guests,” Cole said. If you have a wine lover on
your list or you’re hosting or attending a party where wine will be appreciated, the Illinois Valley area has excellent places to buy wine, including August Hill Winery in Utica and Vintage Vines. “Heidi (Conrad) Heerdt opened Vintage Vines in June 2025 with her best friend, Patty (Miller) Favero. Heidi and Patty have been best friends since they were 5 years old, which makes owning the business together especially meaningful to them,” said J.C. Heerdt, Heidi’s husband. “I jokingly call myself an owner through marriage. I help behind the scenes with social media, events, and day-to-day operations, but Vintage Vines was truly Heidi and Patty’s vision.” Those who want to give wine as gifts this holiday season have plenty of options at Vintage Vines. “We offer gift cards in any amount, which can be used for wine, tastings, events, or anything else at Vintage Vines. Guests can also choose from our selection of wines produced by wineries throughout Illinois, Vintage Vines shirts, and locally made wine accessories, including Haley’s Corkers,” J.C. said. “A bottle of wine paired with a corker or gift card makes an easy, personal gift. We’re always happy to help someone select a wine based on the recipient’s tastes, even if the person shopping doesn’t know much about wine. We want shopping at Vintage Vines to feel relaxed, approachable, and fun,” he added. To give a gift that lasts throughout the year, Vintage Vine has a Cork & Key Club. “The Cork & Key Club is our monthly wine club for people who enjoy discovering new Illinois-made wines and being part of the Vintage Vines

Smart Eating Strategies Tips to keep the scale steady this holiday season Story by Katlyn Sanden Holiday parties don’t have to sideline your health and nutritional goals. Going to gatherings that feature staples like ham, turkey, potatoes, rolls, stuffing, and desserts doesn’t mean that the scale is destined to creep up. “A lot of the popular holiday foods are not inherently unhealthy,” said Matthew Stark, Corporate Regional Registered Dietitian at Hy-Vee. “It really
depends on the serving size one will consume of that food as well as what they put on top of it. To improve the overall ‘healthiness’ of the meal, I would recommend adding extra protein and non- starchy veggies (anything that’s not potatoes, peas, or corn) onto your plate as they will help keep you fuller for longer and provide lots of nutrients.” Defining how to construct your plate before you go to any party or holiday gathering can help. “Think about focusing on protein and fiber as your base for the meal and from there, people can add in the other classic
holiday sides such as their potatoes, rolls, and desserts,” Stark said. Stark stressed the key to being healthy throughout the holidays is to focus on lean protein and non-starchy vegetables that will keep you fuller longer. “From there add in the other foods you enjoy but be conscious of the portion size,” Stark said. “This way we do not feel like we are missing out, but at the same time, we are eating in a more health-conscious way.” Other options could include making healthy swaps to old family favorite recipes. See SMART, Page 18

“One bad meal will not have that huge of a negative impact on our health long term. What is important is that we go back to our healthier ways of eating (and lifestyle) shortly thereafter the holiday meal.”
Matthew Stark
Corporate Regional Registered Dietitian at Hy-Vee
Smart FROM PAGE 17
“Take mashed potatoes, for example,” said Stark. “Typically, someone may add cream (or milk), butter, cheese, sour cream, and seasonings to it. We could swap out the butter, sour cream, and cheese for some blended cottage cheese and then add a lower fat milk to get the consistency we want. Flavor will be comparable, but we took a lot of additional calories off the meal with those swaps.” Desserts can also be very tempting during the holidays. Again, Stark advises moderation. “I recommend having dessert at the end of a meal. This will do two things for us – it will allow us to still have that dessert we want and, when we have it at the end of a meal, we will probably eat less of it as we are already somewhat full of the meal. As a second bonus, our blood sugar response to that sweet will be considerably lessened having it with a meal compared to an empty stomach,” Stark said. The biggest key is to try not to stress over what’s on your plate at a single party, Stark said. “One bad meal will not have that huge of a negative impact on our health long term,” said Stark. “What is important is that we go back to our healthier ways of eating (and lifestyle) shortly thereafter the holiday meal. What can be challenging is when that one holiday ‘cheat’ meal turns into a several days or several weeks’ worth of unhealthy eating choices,” Stark said.
