Before becoming chairman of the RTA, Dillard served in the Illinois Senate for more than 20 years. Before that, he served as chief of staff for Gov. Jim Edgar and as a legislative director for former Gov. Jim Thompson. “I hope these skills are transferable – I hope they are – to being chairman of the Regional Transportation Authority,” he said.
Dillard replaces John Gates Jr. as chairman of the transportation authority. Gates stepped down after four years as chairman. Chris Nybo, an Elmhurst Republican, will take over Kirk Dillard’s more than 20year reign in the Illinois Senate, representing the 24th District. HINSDALE – After resigning his state senate seat Sunday in a move to take over as chairman of the Regional Transportation Authority, Kirk Dillard wasted no time laying out goals and expectations for the organization that oversees the nation’s second largest mass transit system. Among the number of goals the former state senator of 20 years has set for himself, Dillard said he wants to make traveling throughout Chicago area possible through one system of payment. “I need to get in there and just see what technologies are being used so that we have one universal system,” Dillard said. He pointed out that, as a commuter himself, getting from one place to another can be difficult when using different parts of the mass transit system means paying for parts of the service in different ways. Currently buying tickets to use the Metra trains is run through Metra, while Pace bus payment and paying to use the Chicago Transit Authority are run through Ventra. Dillard said the solution would be to have “a seamless system of mass transit for our commuters.” Although past chairmen of the RTA have often had trouble getting the boards of Metra, Pace and the CTA to come together as all three are run independent of each other, Dillard is hopeful to improve upon that fissure. “The RTA requires someone who is cross regional, can work in a bipartisan manner

A group of Illinois elected officials, including state Senate GOP Leader Christine Radogno, joined Nybo supporters at the Sunken Garden Memorial at Lombard Common Park for the swearing in ceremony. “I was delighted to step down early so that the district will have a seamless transition,” said Dillard, who won the 2012 primary against Nybo. Nybo’s appointment comes after Dillard resigned from the state Senate on Sunday in order to accept his appointment as chairman of the Regional Transportation Authority.

man James Falvey convened a committee, which appointed Nybo to be sworn in and fulfill the term. The overwhelming majority of the district is in DuPage County with a few precincts in Western Springs that define the makeup of the nominating committee.
Ruscitti, who represents more than 95 percent of the GOP weighted vote in the district, said in a news release she nominated Nybo because voters already chose him in the March primary. After DuPage County Circuit Judge Brian McKillip swore in Nybo, the senator thanked his supporters and family. His wife, Faye, and children, Connor, Olivia and Allison, joined Nybo while he spoke about his new job in the state Senate. “Our state is drowning in debt, high unemployment, unsustainable pensions and pervasive corruption,” said Nybo, who was a state representative from 2011 to 2013. He said too many businesses and people in the state want to say, “I quit,” but Nybo promised not to give up on Illinois. Nybo will face Suzanne Glowiak of Western Springs in the November general election for the same Senate seat. “I will work as hard as I can to get our state back on the right track.” Nybo said.

HINSDALE – The Cosi restaurant in downtown Hinsdale train station closed during the week of July 27. Hinsdale Director of Economic Development Timothy Scott said he was told in early July the store would be closing. However, the closure came early, Scott said. “They ended up closing a week sooner than expected,” he said. The “fast-casual” restaurant is known for its flatbread sandwiches, pizzas and salads, but Scott said since Cosi went public in 2002, the company has been having troubles. A number of the company’s nationwide restaurants have closed, as Cosi locations recently dipped from 141 to 115, according to its website. The storefront in downtown Hinsdale opened more
than nine years ago, according to Scott. “We were always escaping any of that bad news,” he said, explaining that the store’s closure was a possibility he has been anticipating for some time. “I was surprised that they were able to weather the storm for so long,” Scott said. He already has a list of about 12 potential businesses that could take over the space at the Hinsdale train station. He met Tuesday with the Village Manager and the broker, who made the Cosi contract, to discuss the next steps in filling the space. The goal is to find a business that caters to the morning commuter crowd, Scott added, something Cosi was unable to do as they featured more lunch and dinner foods. “[We want something] for the morning commuter, standing next to the tracks,” he said.

Teens take music to next level, play at Lollapalooza By ZACHARY WHITE zwhite@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – For most performers it was another large weekendlong concert, but for two Hinsdale teens it was the opportunity of a lifetime. Paden Guido, 17, and Meghan Callahan, 18, took the Lollapalooza stage Aug. 1 in Chicago, performing in front of thousands of festivalgoers. “There’s really this feeling you have that really can’t be put into words,” Guido said. Guido and Callahan were joined by musicians from across the country as part of the School of Rock AllStars Tour. Rick Carney, the AllStars music director who worked with Guido and Callahan before and during Lollapalooza, said 150 musicians were chosen out of 15,000 students in the School of Rock system nationwide to perform as part of the AllStars tour. As part of the tour, the girls performed at Chicago taverns and venues for nearly a week

She moved from more classical music to Rock ’n’ Roll, and started playing the guitar and bass, the instrument she played during the AllStars Tour. McKenna explained the amount of work the girls put into their work is what makes them truly great. “You get what you give, that’s why these AllStars are such good players,” he said. For the two teens from Hinsdale, the hard work turned into a huge show. Guido said the feeling she gets from performing is something you can’t get anywhere else. “The energy of the crowd, it was really such an incredible energy. You can feel every beat and the crowd,” Guido said. “That’s the feeling I live for.”

HINSDALE – While salary negotiations continue between teachers and the district, tensions are mounting over the possibility of a District 86 teacher strike. During the week of July 27, the District 86 Board of Education asked that teachers promise not to go on strike during the upcoming school year. The Hinsdale High School Teachers Association has not obliged, and although the union announced that it plans to be working in the weeks leading up to the first day of school, as well as on the first day Aug. 22, the teachers are holding onto the ability to strike after the school year starts. Meanwhile, information from both sides of the aisle has been circulating throughout July via news releases and emails.

They are already poised to replace all of our teachers.” However, in a speech delivered during the committee of the whole meeting Monday, District 86 Board President Richard Skoda said the district has made real concessions to an offer they already consider fair. HINSDALE – Total house sales in Hinsdale were up in June from the previous month, and lagged behind the same month’s totals from 2013. This data, provided by the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors, showed 39 single family homes were sold in June, six more than in May, and six less than a year ago, a 13 percent decrease. The median sales price decreased this June over June 2013, though it showed a dip from the previous month. The price decreased from $929,500 to $900,000, a 3.2 percent drop. May 2014’s figure was $1,000,000, 11 percent higher. In Westmont, homes sales decreased from May to June, while the median sales price increased slightly. The June data also showed that this June performed worse than June of 2013 in terms of to-
tal homes sold – dipping from 22 to 15. But the median sales price is on the rise. The median price in June 2014 jumped to $252,000 from $245,000 in May 2014 and $247,500 in June 2013. Total home sales and median sale prices for Burr Ridge in June were slightly down from last month and dipped further from June 2013. Ten homes were sold in Burr Ridge in June. This is two less than in May and seven less than in June 2013. The median sale price for June was $680,000, a 12.1 percent decrease from May and a .14 percent increase from June 2013. Although the total home sales in Darien decreased slightly from May to June, the market is not fluctuating severely. In Darien, 19 homes were sold in June, compared to 20 in May and 18 in June 2013. However, the median sales price in Darien continues to

A toast to ornate Parisian luxury, Le Méridien boasts a design concept, amenities and artwork that bring ornate French luxury to Oak Brook. Part of the transformation of the former Renaissance Hotel includes two spa suites, a 3,000-square-foot grand salon ballroom, an executive club
lounge and a Spanish restaurant, El Tapeo. In addition to the 172 rooms and suites with amenities, there also is a stateof- the-art fitness center. During a grand opening ceremony July 31, Dave Lutz, senior vice president at Rockbridge, a private equity firm that invests in hotels, said he was happy to see the renovations come to fruition. “It was an old building and we did find a lot of things that you had to fix and repair, and we really got to the point where we could open up this building,” he said. Passersby will first notice
the sleek black façade and towering height of the building, and guests who enter the hotel are then greeted by a number of local works of art, paintings and murals. “Our leisure guests on the weekend will spoil themselves with some of the beautiful spa suites we have upstairs,” Starwood Hotels Senior Vice President Dave Marr said. “Or just coming down here to the bar, to the lobby bar to have some of our signature sparkling cocktails that are special to the Le Méridien brand.” Yet guests will not break the bank on a stay at Oak
Brook’s latest hotel, as the starting nightly rate at Le Méridien is $125. Marr said on top of bringing a different type of hotel to the area for guests to enjoy, part of the Méridien brand seeks to get guests to go out and explore the local community. “Culture and art is a really big part of the Le Méridien brand and we have partnered with the Elmhurst Art Museum as our Unlock Art partner and it’s kind of great,” Marr said. “All you need to do is show your hotel key and you get in for free.”
Oak Brook Village President Gopal Lalmalani said he’s optimistic Le Méridien can offer a lot to the area. “I think this is a truly tremendous fusion of the unique Oak Brook brand that we have and the French borne brand that comes from the Le Méridien,” he said. Even with the excitement of a new hotel in front of them, this grand opening was not the end of the line for the Le Méridien brand. “We are having plans to open one hotel every month, for the next 12 months,” Marr said.

Fighting trafficking in the foster care system For too many children in the foster care system, their lives have been filled with instability, abuse, and neglect. Often these children are passed from home to home not knowing how long they will stay in one place or who they can trust. The psychological toll of such an environment makes it all too easy for human trafficking rings to target vulnerable foster care COMMUNITY youth and force them into VOICE what can only be described as Peter modern day slavery. That is why lawmakers, community Roskam leaders and law enforcement agencies are joining forces to prevent the estimated 104,000 children in foster care from becoming victims of physical and psychological abuse. Last month, I joined my colleagues in passing the bipartisan Preventing Sex Trafficking and Strengthening Families Act, which makes critical reforms to our foster care laws, working to identify those most vulnerable to predators and take concrete steps to protect these children from abuse. First, the bill increases the reporting requirements for foster parents and child welfare agencies, encouraging them to identify at-risk youth and develop new ways to ensure better information is provided to caseworkers assigned to these children. Our legislation also works to address current foster care policies that can make it difficult for children to participate in sports, sleep over at a friend’s house, obtain a driver’s license, or get a part-time job – all common rites of passage for kids making the transition into adulthood. Although well-intentioned, in some cases these strict rules can lead to a child becoming isolated and separated from family and friends, making them more vulnerable to victimization. The Preventing Sex Trafficking and Strengthening Families Act offers financial support and incentives for the adoption of foster children to families who otherwise couldn’t afford it. Providing these children more normalcy through social development activities and increasing their chance of adoption into a permanent family is key to not only protecting them from predators but setting up foster care children for long-term success. Through partnerships at the federal, state and local level, we can go after the criminals who commit this horrible crime, and protect the most vulnerable members of our society. These reforms are a huge step forward, and I will continue to press forward to stamp out the scourge of human trafficking in our communities.

Some residents should live in a dome I’m responding to the letter writer about dogs peeing in their yard and how gross it is. They might wanna put a dome over their house. Because I have seen hundreds of squirrels, skunks, raccoons, possums, birds, rabbits and cats, to name a few, in people’s yards. Do they really think not one of those mammals pee in their yards? A dome would be good. And while we’re at it, while you’re out walking yourself, watch out for things coming out of trees because squirrels, skunks, raccoons and birds all live in trees. And you never know what will come out of them. So, I just thought I’d mention that, get a dome.

I’m calling about more green space in La Grange at Ashland and Harris avenues. There is a lot that used to be a funeral home that’s been empty for more than eight years. It’s now being zoned to possibly be a condominium complex within that neighborhood. There are numerous large condo buildings and apartment buildings, and we don’t need that. What we need in La Grange is green space. It could be a community garden. It could be a lovely, enhancing part of the village, as opposed to more buildings, especially when that large apartment complex is going to be built not too far away on the corner of Ogden Avenue and La Grange Road. So, let’s go for more green space in La Grange and petition the village to buy that lot and turn it into green space for the residents of La Grange. Thank you.

Charles Andrew Derer, age 97, passed away Monday, July 21, 2014. Retired tool and die maker and U.S. Navy veteran. Beloved father of Charles (Penny), Rick (Merikay) and Dave (Margie). Beloved stepfather of Vicky Edwards. Fond brother of Helen and the late Joseph and Wendell. Preceded in death by his wife Lee and stepsons Jerry and Tom. Charles grew up in New Jersey and raised his family in the Chicago area. He spent most of his retirement years in Florida before returning to the midwest a few years ago. As a young man he ran away with the Cole Brothers Circus and served in many capacities including performing as a clown in the Emmett Kelly tradition. A man of projects, he built his three homes by reading how-to books. He was also known for building detailed models of vehicles, especially circus wagons and automobiles. During his retirement he became active in the Toastmasters, Optimists and Coast Guard. He was known to many as “Grandpa Wave” due to his participation in Amphicar events. His handmade Amphicar model, when auctioned for charity, raised a large amount of money for a retirement home for circus chimpanzees in Florida.

Enjoy a game and meal at StoneHouse Pub LEMONT – I made a terrible mistake when I ordered my meal at StoneHouse Pub. Don’t get me wrong – the dish I ordered tasted fantastic. I really enjoyed every bite, the flavor, texture, quality of ingredients. It was all perfect. The server tried to warn me, “Are you sure that’s what you want to order?” I wasn’t really paying close attention like I should have. I was engrossed in conversation with my two dining companions, and had picked something absentmindedly. “Yes, I’m sure,” I said. This is a great example of why diners should always listen to their servers. The strangest part of all? I could see myself ordering it again. And regretting it again. The stuffed burger at StoneHouse Pub in Lemont is probably the largest sandwich I’ve ever seen, aside from ridiculous eating competitions on TV. It’s billed as three-quarters of a pound of Angus beef burger, stuffed with the diner’s choice of two ingredients. I chose American cheese and onions. I guess it hadn’t really registered consciously exactly how big that was going to be when I ordered it, but I was certainly brought back to reality when it was delivered. You know how burger commercials on TV make their sandwiches look impossibly tall, but then you order one at a fast-food joint and it’s about a centimeter thick? This was the impressive TV version, except with a high-quality bun, fresh tomato slices, and some of the best-tasting beef patties I’ve ever tried. Knowing that the server had questioned the wisdom of my order, and feeling like I’d be in for some ribbing if I failed to consume the whole thing, I resolved right then that I would not leave Stone-

House Pub without finishing this behemoth. While I was working my way through three meals’ worth of cheeseburger, my companions were enjoying much more reasonable dinners. One had the pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato fries, and the other went for the cod fish sandwich, a deepfried filet served with lettuce, tomato and onion. They were both well-pleased by their orders. We were fortunate to be at StoneHouse on the night of a major sporting event, and the pub filled up over the course of our time there with fans enjoying the convivial atmosphere. As the only sports fan among our trio (sports and overeating go together, right?), I was caught up in the enthusiasm. This is clearly a great place to see a game. For an eatery that doesn’t put on airs or claim to be a fine dining establishment, StoneHouse, nevertheless, clearly takes the food part of its business seriously. There were wraps, salads, pizza, baby back ribs, tacos, baked tilapia and a variety of items on the menu when we visited. As the evening wore on, I became less and less an active participant in our group’s conversation, as I focused on the task before me. My taste buds still wanted more, but my stomach was starting to

By the time I finished off the last few bites, I had become well-acquainted with the concept of the Pyrrhic victory – I may have won, but I didn’t particularly feel like a winner in terms of restraint. So learn from my exam-
ple – you can get a great meal at StoneHouse Pub, but if you order the stuffed burger, you’d better be prepared for a challenge. Or maybe cut the burger in half and take a portion of it home. That would’ve been a really good idea.

Big Ten quartet SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA HINSDALE – What do Brian Allen, Jack Allen, Ian Bunting and Scott McDowell all have in common? The four football players currently are spread out at three major universities in two states, but they all started out at the same place – Hinsdale Central High School. Both Allen brothers have moved on to Michigan State, Bunting is continuing his career at Michigan and McDowell is playing at Illinois.

McDowell is one of 18 offensive lineman listed on the Illini roster, though four of those players are true freshman and three others are redshirt freshman. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound McDowell saw action in one game each of the last two sea-

sons and is currently preparing for his junior year. Of the four Central graduates playing in the Big Ten, Jack Allen has seen the most action. The junior is the No. 1 center on the Spartans’ preseason depth chart, and rightly so. He has started 24 games the past two seasons and has seen action in 25 games total during that time. Last year, he was part of Michigan State’s Big Ten Championship Game victory against Ohio State and the Rose Bowl-winning squad, and
was an All-Big Ten honorable mention pick by the coaches after the season. He also was an academic All-Big Ten pick for the second straight year. Brian Allen, listed at 6-foot-2 and 294 pounds, is a true freshman center for the Spartans and is not listed on the depth chart, though two of the players currently on the four-deep are seniors so he has an excellent chance to break through in the near future. He starts his college career after a stellar senior year at Central that was capped with a
spot in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in January. Bunting will be on the opposite sideline from the Allen brothers when Michigan travels to Michigan State Oct. 25. The 6-foot-7, 227-pound Bunting is one of six tight ends listed on the Wolverines’ roster. Jake Butt, one of the other tight ends on the squad, saw action in all 13 games last season and finished third on the team with 20 catches, 235 yards and two touchdowns and is likely to see the majority of action this fall.

After redshirting his first year on campus in 2011, Allen has played in 25 games with 24 starts since 2012. All but five of those starts have come at center, where he is expected to play this season. The Spartans are defending Big Ten champions, and Allen is one of three players who started on the offensive line in Michigan State’s Rose Bowl win against Stanford that are slated to return.
COLLEGE: Illinois HIGH SCHOOL: Bolingbrook YEAR: Sophomore POSITION: Quarterback Bailey, listed at 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, used his size, speed and overall athleticism to get on the field in his first year on campus. He played in nine games, being mostly used as a goal-line quarterback. Bailey ran for three touchdowns and passed for one more, all from 10 yards or less. Overall, he ran for 83 yards on 20 carries and was 2-for-5 for four yards through the air. Nathan Scheelhaase, a four-year starter at quarterback, is gone, but Wes Lunt, a highly touted transfer from Oklahoma State will battle for playing time with Bailey and fellow local product Reilly O’Toole.

He missed the first six contests last season due to injury but ended up playing in six games, registering three tackles and half of a sack as the Buckeyes finished third in the country with 42 sacks last season. As a freshman, the 6-foot-2, 300-pounder saw action in 10 games.
Austin Teitsma COLLEGE: Illinois HIGH SCHOOL: Glenbard South YEAR: Senior POSITION: Defensive line After playing in seven games as a redshirt freshman and all 12 contests as a sophomore, Teitsma earned a starting role last fall at defensive tackle. The 6-foot-2, 290-pounder finished sixth on the Illini with 53 tackles and also added 5 ½ tackles for loss, one forced fumble and three quarterback hurries. He tied a career high with eight tackles against Northwestern in the final game of the season.

COLLEGE: Illinois HIGH SCHOOL: Wheaton Warrenville South YEAR: Senior POSITION: Quarterback Entering his fourth and final year with the Illini, O’Toole has seen action behind center in each of his first three seasons. As a junior, he played in six games, completing 12-of-16 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 34 yards. O’Toole started twice as a sophomore, finishing with 564 yards and six touchdowns that year, after taking part in 10 games as a freshman.
COLLEGE: Northwestern HIGH SCHOOL: Proviso West YEAR: Senior POSITION: Wide receiver The USC transfer has struggled to make his mark in two seasons at Northwestern. In the past two years, he has combined for 19 receptions and 113 yards without catching any touchdowns. Entering his senior season, Prater is hoping to match the expectations placed on him out of high school. His 59 yards last season ranked ninth on the team, but three of the players who finished ahead of him were seniors.

COLLEGE: Northwestern HIGH SCHOOL: Wheaton Warrenville South YEAR: Junior POSITION: Superback In just two seasons for the Wildcats, this WWS graduate already has carved out quite a solid career for himself. After receiving playing time as a true freshman, Vitale started all 12 games in 2013 as a superback (a combination fullback and tight end). Catching at least one pass in every contest, the incoming junior finished third on Northwestern with 34 receptions for 382 yards, which included a five-catch, 101yard performance against California. He also hauled in three touchdowns.
COLLEGE: Iowa HIGH SCHOOL: Glenbard West YEAR: Junior POSITION: Offensive line After seeing spot duty and playing in seven games in 2012, Walsh ascended to a starting position last fall and was entrenched at right guard for all 13 contests. The 6-foot-4, 290-pounder helped the Hawkeyes total nearly 500 yards of offense in each of the team’s first two games of the 2013 season while also playing a role in Iowa rushing for over 200 yards in five straight games to begin the 2013 campaign.
COLLEGE: Nebraska HIGH SCHOOL: Montini YEAR: Sophomore POSITION: Wide receiver Westerkamp made a big impression as a redshirt freshman for the Cornhuskers. He played in all 13 games and started the Gator Bowl win against Georgia. He was third on Nebraska with 283 receiving yards and fourth in receptions with 20. He also had 19 punt returns for 51 yards. Westerkamp’s only touchdown came against Northwestern on a 49-yard Hail Mary on the last play of the game to give the Huskers the win. This fall, he could see play a bigger role in the offense as the second-leading wide receiver among returners.

COLLEGE: Northwestern HIGH SCHOOL: Lyons Township YEAR: Sophomore POSITION: Cornerback/kick returner Harris’ first game action came on special teams, both on kickoffs and kick returns. With Venric Mark injured for most of the season, Harris became the Wildcats’ primary kickoff returner. He took 21 kicks for 484 yards, including a 47-yard return against Western Michigan. As a cornerback, Harris started the last five games of the season, totaling 36 tackles and being named to ESPN.com’s Big Ten All-Freshman team. He was one of just two true freshmen to play last season for Northwestern.
