offered as a solution to the parking problem. “We’ve tried to encourage people to park in that lot and to walk,” Gurgone said. “It is significantly further. If you measure the closest possible spot at Westwood to the front door entrance versus the furthest space in the proposed lot, the walk from Westwood to the closest spot is 860 feet and from the furthest space is 490 [feet], so it is significantly closer.” But community members disagreed, saying the walk was not that significant. Straus said he made the walk and, compared to the proposed lot, it takes 10 to 20

more seconds to walk from the Westwood parking lot to the entrance. “If someone parks in that back corner by me – the 57th parking spot – they’re saving 10 seconds walking by doing that,” he said. “And we’re spending as taxpayers $560,000 to do that. It doesn’t make sense to me.” The park district board will be able to vote on the new parking lot as early as the Sept. 8 meeting. “Even though it may be your legal right to do it,” Straus said. “We ask that you think about the implications it might have.”

DARIEN – A passionate debate took center stage Monday during a Darien Park District Board meeting that addressed a proposed 57 spot parking lot expansion to the Park District Community Center, 7301 Fairview Ave. During the meeting, residents who have homes with backyards that border the proposed parking lot space cited a list of reasons the parking lot was a bad idea. Among the expressed grievances are property devaluation, intrusive light from the lot onto residences, people loitering in the lot, fear that criminals can gain access to residential backyards and potential flood problems. Resident John Straus said his home already has flooding issues, enough that his sub pump is always running. Removing sod and adding a parking lot will only amplify the flooding problems, according to Straus. “To put any type of solid material on top of that, that could in any way slow down the drainage, and will only lead to more problems,” Straus said. However, Byron Wyns, one of the engineers working on the parking lot, said that since the parking lot will be built with permeable pavers, water drainage will not be slowed down. The $560,832 project comes after the park district board has seen a need for increased parking since they opened the doors to the current facility in 2007, Darien Park District Executive Director Stephanie Gurgone said. School choice is all about opportunity I was chatting the other day with a fellow who, along with his wife, home-schools his children. We joked about the stereotype: Moms in denim skirts. But then he expounded on the benefits his youngsters have derived from being taught at home: a customized curriculum, religious values instilled and extra time with parents. And then he added, “One VIEWS of the great things about Scott home schooling is that I havReeder en’t been hassled by anyone in government over how we choose to educate our kids.” Of course, home schooling isn’t for everyone. But it is a wonderful option. There are other good choices out there, too: parochial schools, private secular schools, public schools, charter schools, online learning and other options. That’s why I support school choice. Folks ask me, why? After all, I went to public schools. Don’t I support public education? My answer is straightforward: I support education. I don’t really care if that education is provided by a public school, a private school or in the home. Unfortunately, there are some in public education who want to maintain monopolies on educating children from poor and working class families. After all, those from middle class and wealthy families can afford to make choices for themselves. Not so for others. And the current system often is denying children in low income areas access to quality learning experiences. I live in a rural school district with a high level of poverty. One of my neighbors shared that his daughters couldn’t get admitted directly into engineering school because their high school didn’t offer the advanced math classes they needed. That’s not right. Many in the public education establishment oppose offering alternatives to students who want to excel but whose schools can’t accommodate their needs. So youngsters from poor areas are left with few choices but second-tier educations. That is morally reprehensible. We are a nation based on opportunity. We value choice, yet we give neither to children born into poor or working-class families. That’s why school vouchers have merit – they empower parents to make wise choices for their children. Every parent wants to see their child succeed and offering education choices is the way to see that happen. After all, our children deserve the best.

I would like to remark on a deeply disturbing comment in a recent issue of Westmont’s Suburban Life by the current Public Safety Committee chairman. In response to the recent epidemic of deaths in DuPage County as a result of heroin overdose, the chairman remarked, “My first reaction was, buy bigger guns, build bigger jails, put more cops on the street.” Thankfully, the state’s attorney dissuaded him. Especially in light of the recent events occurring in Ferguson, Mo., I am deeply disturbed someone overseeing public safety in the community where I reside could have such a profoundly ignorant, dangerous and infantile view. While I do not wish to personally attack the chairman, I must make it known that your views on what is best for our community in the interest of public safety are in no way shared by this constituent. Please, Mr. Chairman, continue to listen to the voice of reason, wherever it may reside.

The online system, RecTrac, will allow families to register online, but in-person registration is still available. Residents interested in participating in Park District activities are asked to visit the Community Center to provide proof of residence and to establish a resident household in order to receive resident rates. District 181 offers monthly preschool screening HINSDALE – Community Consolidated School District 181 is conducting monthly preschool screenings during the upcoming school year for children who are 3, 4 or 5 and are having difficulty with cognitive development, speech and language skills, gross and fine motor skills or vision and hearing. Hinsdale police set for late night crackdown HINSDALE – The Hinsdale Police Department will engage in a Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over during the nights leading up to Labor Day. A late night crackdown is being used because late-night drivers are statistically shown to consist more frequently of impaired drivers and seat belt law violators, emphasizing the disproportionate number of traffic deaths occurring during the night, according to a Hinsdale Police Department news release. The poll found that nearly half (49 percent) of boomers still working say they don’t expect to retire until they are 66 or older, including one in 10 who predicts they will never retire. •‘Broken Hipsters’ On Facebook pages and in blogs, they’re calling themselves Broken Hipsters. The Urban Dictionary defines the term as “a person who may look and act like a hipster, but is really too old to be a hipster,” and it refers to people in their 50s and 60s who have given up their longtime homes and are settling down in trendy condos in diverse urban neighborhoods, according to a story in the Wall Street Journal.

According to the American Housing Survey, 9.6 percent of households 55 and older in central cities lived in condos in 2011, the last year for which figures are available, up from 7.3 percent in 2005. Maybe they’re just tired of mowing the lawn. •Boomers and health While baby boomers are living longer, they’re not necessarily living healthier, according to a number of researchers. “One new study found that baby boomers (ages 49 to 67 in 2013) are living longer than people roughly 20 years older but are not healthier. While they are less likely to smoke, have emphysema or a heart attack, they are more likely to be obese, have diabetes or high blood pressure than the previous generation at similar ages,” according to a study done by the Population Reference Bureau. •Simpler living Boomers are tired of going big on everything, and

businesses better start paying attention, according to The Street. “Those baby boomers who worked hard for and embraced the affluent lifestyle of the 1970s through the middle of the last decade — owning large homes and spacious vehicles — have reached a turning point,” said Sheryl Connelly, global consumer trends and a “futurist” for Ford. “This generation is now trending toward a simpler way of living, one that doesn’t eliminate the lavish comforts they’ve come to enjoy.” •Tech spenders Despite being portrayed as luddites who can’t handle technology, boomers dominate the market in terms of money spent on tech, according to Forrester Research’s annual benchmark tech study. While boomers represent 25 percent of the population, they consume 40 percent in total dollars spent on it, according to Nielsen Co.

Darien police warn residents of possible scam SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DARIEN – Darien Police are warning residents to be on the lookout for anyone knocking on their door unannounced seeking to do repair work, asking to gain entry to a residence to check utilities or asking residents to step outside to inspect another portion of their property, according to a Darien Police Department news release. Police advise residents to not allow anyone entry that they have not personally contacted to arrange service, according to the release. The Darien Police received a report at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 21 in the 1000 block of

Park Crest Drive from a resident who alleges that two men rang her door bell and said they were from Comcast and were placing cable in the back yard, the release stated. When the resident told the subjects they were not allowed in her yard, the men left the area in a white pickup truck, according to police. The victim alleges that the men were between the ages of 30 and 40 and wearing neon green t-shirts with Comcast logos. One man was heavy set in weight and the other male was thin, police said. Comcast confirmed that there were no repair crews in the area, according to police.

The village of Oak Brook will vote to approve a contract with Ginex at their Sept. 9 board meeting. He officially will start in the position Oct. 6.

Willow Crest hosts golf outing for visually impaired vets By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – For a sixth straight year, a group of former football coaches banded together to honor and pay respect to a dozen visually impaired veterans. On Aug. 20, former Westmont and Downers Grove South football coach Jack McInerney hosted the sixth annual golf outing for 12 visually impaired veterans at the Willow Crest Golf Club at the Hilton Chicago/Oak Brook Hills Resort. The annual outing is part of the Central Blind Rehabilitation Center at Edward Hines Jr. Veterans Hospital program that helps visually impaired veterans cope with their condition. “It’s important for these guys to know, even though they served in World War II, Korea or Vietnam, we haven’t forgotten about them and their service,” said McInerney, a Westmont resident. “All of our freedoms and liberties are because of them. They are the real heroes and this is our way of honoring them.” About 9 a.m. Aug. 20, each golfer paired up with one to two caddies, most of whom are

Guthrie said while O’Neill dished out some helpful golf tips, the best part of the day was chatting about Iowa State athletics.

“I’ve had so much fun today,” Guthrie said. “It’s nice to get out on the course and bond with these guys. Mike’s an old Iowa State guy, he played football there and my son wrestled there, so it’s really great to have that connection. “ Downers Grove resident Jay Baum agreed, explaining that he decided to caddie for a second straight year in order to continue giving back to the veterans that have given so much. “It’s such a humbling and rewarding experience,” Baum said. “These are some amazing men who risked their lives for our country, so it’s great to give back and help them in any way possible.” After playing a few holes, the golfers and caddies were treated to lunch by Club Manager and Golf Pro Randy Bolsted and the Willow Crest staff. Salseria Grill & Cantina moves to salsa beat ELMHURST – Salsas can seem like an afterthought in some Mexican restaurants, only there to placate hungry patrons munching on chips before the meal proper arrives. Salseria Grill & Cantina, which has locations in Elmhurst and Chicago, appears to take the opposite approach in as extreme a way as possible. As the name implies, the restaurant offers a large array of dipping and dunking materials – 15 at its salsa bar alone, plus a variety of hot sauces and a warm red sauce at the table. They are the true stars of the menu – made fresh every day – and the taste shows it. In visits to the restaurant’s Elmhurst location, I tried six of the salsas and was most struck by their simplicity. Each had a relatively short list of ingredients, and the varied combinations of tomato, onion, cilantro, jalapeño, citrus and other flavors were all distinct and present. The thick chips served as an edible platter to deliver them to my palate. While some mixtures were a bit oniony for my taste, special mention goes to the gordo tomatillo, roasted veggie and verde salsas at the bar. My favorite of all was the warm red served with the chips, whose savory flavor added a wonderful change of pace. Just as the French celebrate sauces, the salsas add a lot to the rest of the food, taking it up another notch. The beef burrito was at its best when used as a way to experiment with different accompaniments. The beef and beans inside gave a very subtle base of flavors that played well with every salsa I threw at them. It was toasted perfectly on the outside, and despite being filling, also comes in two (yes, two) larger sizes to satiate even the hungriest of appetites. In the interest of culinary diversity, my second choice was a combo platter, featuring a pork taco, chile relleno and

My other pick was the pork taco, which was surprisingly moist, uncomplicated and delicious, once again delivering a good opportunity to experiment with salsa combinations. I gladly would have eaten a plate of them, but was full

after the large dish of food and having binged on chips in the name of food science. The atmosphere was another highlight, featuring huge, bright posters of old Spanish-language movies, and walls of various hot sauces. Music that was loud enough to hear and enjoy, but not drown out conversation, rounded out the lively ambience. Salseria’s waitstaff was very attentive, and I was made

to feel welcome. On the liquid front for another visit, the menu highlights Margaritas and homemade sangria along with imported beer.

If you like baseball, you’ve probably watched the World Series on television. But did you know that Little League Baseball also has a world series? It’s played every August in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where Little League Baseball was created. This year, the sport is celebrating its 75th anniversary. By the end of the 19th century, baseball was known as America’s pastime, but there were few opportunities for children to play organized games. That’s when Carl Stotz of Williamsport stepped in. Stotz often played ball with his young nephews, and in 1938 decided to organize a program for them as a way to teach them about sportsmanship and teamwork. There were just three teams in the early years, but the sport quickly grew, and by the 1950s, there were teams all over the U.S. as well as other countries. Today, more than 200,000 teams in 80 countries play Little League. The rules have changed a bit in 75 years. Little League used to be for 11- and 12-yearold boys only, but today, 13-year-olds are allowed in certain circumstances. Girls are allowed, too. This year, Mo’ne Davis from Philadelphia made a splash when she took the mound in the Little League World Series as the 18th girl to play in the series and the ﬁrst female pitcher to throw a shutout, which means the opposing team did not score any runs against her team.

Central hopes to raise the bar By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Change is in the air for Hinsdale Central’s football program. Dan Hartman took over as varsity head coach to replace Rich Tarka after a successful run as the head man at Evergreen Park. In trying to replicate that success at Central, Hartman will be relying on seniors like lineman Michael Johnson to lead the way. Johnson spoke with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about the Red Devils’ new coach and new style of play and how the summer helped the team prepare. Rossi: How are things with a new coach this year? Johnson: It’s definitely different from last year. The

hurry-up offense is definitely a lot different than what we ran before. It was tough to get accustomed to it at first, but we really came around and it all started clicking. It’s going to be good this year. Rossi: What’s the biggest thing that you need to do when adjusting to a new offense? Johnson: Definitely the first few days, the linemen were gassed. We were pretty tired,

but after a few days we started to get more in shape. It took a little while to get the plays, but we got the conditioning pretty quick. Rossi: Did the 25 days of summer camp help you get ready? Johnson: Yeah. Practices were two and a half or three hours and we got a lot done in that time. There wasn’t a lot of time in between. It was boom-boom-boom, on to the next thing, so it felt like we got a lot done. Rossi: As a senior, in what ways are you leading the team? Johnson: We had our offseason program that started in November and it went until the end of May, and we had a bunch of leaders and I was one of them helping out the younger guys.

Rossi: So far, what’s different for you and the team this season compared to last year? Gordon: I got bigger lifting in the offseason and as team we all worked hard. We believe

Rossi: What is you leadership style? Gordon: I lead by how I do things. The young guys, I just want to be there to help them and be like a coach on the offensive line. Rossi: What kind of goals does this team have in mind? Gordon: We want to go hard every game and work hard every day because other teams are doing the same thing and we want to be ready. We’re taking it week by week. The first game is Romeoville, so we just have to focus on that game and then take it a game at a time.
