In order to gauge residents’ point of view, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning gathered input via an online survey, receiving complaints about the traffic, lack of parking spots and confusion regarding the various color zones. Other ideas to increase parking spots also have been suggested.

Anderson said one idea, which has come up in past discussions, has been to get rid of the metered parking and build a garage. Bayley explained while residents may want a parking garage, its cost would not be a cost-effective solution because street parking would still fill up first. She said as Hinsdale continues to grow, there may one day be need for a parking garage, but not yet. Another suggestion is to install credit card ready parking meters and use a progressive parking fee, which costs more

the longer a spot is occupied. This method would allow people who want to spend a few hours downtown the ability to do so, while employees would likely park elsewhere to avoid the higher costs, according to Bayley. Anderson said before any changes to parking can be made, the Hinsdale Zoning and Public Safety committee would have to discuss it. Zoning and Public Safety Committee Chairman Bob Saigh said he doesn’t know if parking will even be on Monday’s meeting agenda.

HINSDALE – A recent study of parking in Hinsdale found people visiting the downtown can’t find a place to park, in turn creating a problem that could be costing local business owners money. Lindsay Bayley, senior planner for the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, led the analysis of downtown Hinsdale and said there is a simple solution to the problem. Instead of parking on nearby roadway, Bayley recommended that business owners and their employees park further away from their stores, freeing up enough spots for shoppers and out of towners visiting the area. “It would be a pretty small change,” Bayley said. She explained that as early as 10 a.m. on weekdays, between 90 percent and 100 percent of parking spots downtown are occupied, and drivers at times park illegally. The study showed between 15 percent to 30 percent of street parking is being used by employees because it’s cheaper to feed the meter at the rate of a quarter an hour than it is to pay for a parking pass. But clearing out parking in downtown is not the plan, according to Bayley. The goal is to have parking near capacity, and she recommends for every seven downtown spots, one is free for someone to park in. “It’s still full, and you’re not scaring people away to the mall,” she said. emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Rehan Tariq began volunteering at Charlie’s Gift Autism Center this May to prepare for a possible career in occupational therapy, but he said it quickly became more than just a place to prepare for his future. The center, which is the newest program of Hinsdale’s The Community House, provides physical and occupational therapy, but also behavioral therapy and several other services to children with autism spectrum disorder and their families. Tariq assists Occupational Therapist Stacy Haatvedt two days a week, doing anything from filing paper work to helping a child learn how to dribble a ball. Often times, children who come to Charlie’s Gift Autism Center can be reluctant to open up to new people, and Tariq said the atmosphere at the workplace gives the chance for those personal connections to

work with you and understand just what to do.” He said like children without developmental disabilities, children on the autism spectrum often just need some-

one to give them a nudge in the right direction. “You just need to push them a little bit so they know their ability is there, they just have to fulfill it,” he said. “It’s really rewarding.” Tariq, 22, of Downers Grove, graduated from UIC with a psychology degree this spring and hopes to return there for graduate school, he said. If he stays in the area for grad school, he plans to keep coming to Charlie’s Gift as often as he can. Charlie’s Gift Director of Clinical Services Kathy Ruffulo said the not-for-profit is looking for more dedicated volunteers like Tariq this summer as it continues an expand-

ed roster of Saturday morning activities geared towards children with autism and their siblings, called Sib Shop, at the Community House in Hinsdale. She said volunteers also are needed for a horseback riding activity for families with the Ray Graham Association. “We couldn’t do what we do without them,” she said. “When families come to Charlie’s gift for therapy, we bill their insurance for that, but that doesn’t begin to cover the costs of the center.” Ruffulo explained that Charlie’s Gift sets itself apart from other autism centers by not only offering speech clinics, occupational therapy and and social and motor skills development, but also behavioral therapy, and services for the family as a whole. “We focus on the behavioral piece, and mood disorders and anxiety that go along with having autism,” she said. “As well as building social opportunities, and building those social skills.”

HINSDALE – The District 86 Board of education recently approved the hire of VerifyResidence.com to complete an annual residence database audit review and report that will help flag out-of-district students This past school year, 17 students allegedly frauded the district out of more than $275,000 in tuition by falsifying or not providing in-district residencies. With a 4-3 approval vote at Monday’s board of education meeting, school officials hope to usher in a new era of more stringent residency checks. “Hopefully everybody here realizes residency checking and reporting have not been done in a state of the art way in the past,” School Board President Richard Skoda said. “It wasn’t happening consistently, or it was happening infrequently.” In the past, the district had verified the residency of freshmen and transfer students only when registering for Hinsdale Central or Hinsdale South in the summer. Each building used its own forms and procedures, so there was no district oversight, according to Skoda. This year, both district high schools will be using the same verification process, which requires homeowners to show utility bills and renters to provide a signed lease. Skoda said part of the process also will be to make sure the people living in an apartment are the ones signing up at that address. Skoda noted while registering from out of district is fraud, the cost is the education of district children. “Educating [out-of-district] kids takes money away from the kids whose parents are paying taxes for their kids to be

there,” he explained. VerifyResidence.com, a Freehold, N.J. company, was the low bidder and will complete residency checks at a cost of $2 per student. Skoda said the company will database names and then run students’ information through their system. “It will spit out names that don’t seem to belong,” he said. He also pointed out District 86 isn’t the only place where fraud is occurring. At a recent school board meeting, assistant superintendent for academics Pam Bylsma, who used to be a principal at Riverside Brookfield, and Hinsdale South High School principal Stephanie Palmer, who used to be a principal in Oak Park, said that in both there former districts there were instances of students from out of district trying to get into their schools. Last school year, District 86 hired firms American Heritages and National Investigations to investigate and to determine which students reside outside district boundaries, but were not paying out of district tuition, which costs $90 per day. To verify the residency of students, the district and the hired firms compared electric bills and property tax bills to the student information in the district database. Following the verification process, the district requested documentation from 107 unverified students. After reviewing the documentation, letters were mailed requesting tuition reimbursement for 17 students, totaling more than $275,000. Another 26 students were also unverified, but the district’s law firm advised against further investigation because the students in question were graduating seniors.

ne year ago, DuPage County made headlines across the nation after 11 residents died of heroin overdoses in July alone – almost half of the 23 who had died up to that point in 2013. The surge was part of a record-high 46 heroin-related deaths that year, a number that led many county officials to declare a public health crisis. County Coroner Richard Jorgensen said during a presentation to the county board in September that users of hard drugs go into a spiral ending “in rehabilitation if you’re lucky, our criminal justice system if you’re also lucky, or death.” The death toll and subsequent presentation were a wake-up call, said board member and Judicial and Public Safety Committee Chairman Grant Eckhoff. “We had to get educated and sit down with the people who knew what they were talking about,” he said. “If any of us had known what was going on beforehand, we should have sounded the alarm instead of waiting on the coroner to do it.” Soon after, the county formed an exploratory committee focused on the problem, he said. “My first reaction was, buy bigger guns, build bigger jails, put more cops on the street,” Eckhoff said of his position at the time. But State’s Attorney Robert Berlin dissuaded him. “The research is out there that when you’re talking about drug addicts, not sellers, for users of narcotics who are addicted to the drug, putting them in jail doesn’t solve the problem,” Berlin said in a recent interview. “If we assume that they want treatment ... it is a better option and has much better results than incarceration.” Berlin said in most drug posses-

sion cases, the people going to jail are repeat offenders. The best approach is to focus on limiting access to drugs by putting dealers in prison – his office charged 31 people in a heroin bust in August – and educating the public about the dangers of the drug, he said. The DuPage County Board dramatically added $100,000 for heroin awareness education at the last minute to its 2014 budget in November. The money since has been used to help form the DuPage Coalition Against Heroin, a group made up of a number of county stakeholders, including the state’s attorney, sheriff’s department, county board, superintendent of schools and health department. The coalition has spearheaded outreach, created a new website aggregating resources and information about heroin addiction, and recently helped establish a pilot with

the Robert Crown Center for Health Education to bring awareness programs to 12 area middle and high schools. “That’s going to be our best method of attacking the problem, preventing future users,” Berlin said. “And I’m going to continue to aggressively go after drug dealers, because it sends a

message to the community that, in the county, we’re not going to tolerate it.” The health department also began training local police departments to use a drug, naloxone, that reverses the effects of opioid overdose. The department allotted $40,000 for the program, and is working to shore up additional funding for it to continue. So far this year, 12 people have received the drug after overdosing, Jorgensen said. He was careful not to give naloxone life-saving credit in all 12, but said the total number of deaths is down in 2014. There have been 15 confirmed heroin deaths with three possible cases pending, he said. By August 2013, there were 34. Jorgensen previously had touted the benefits of increased addiction treatment resources around the county, but now says education should be the main focus. “Not to shortchange getting people into recovery or the criminal aspect ... but the biggest bang for our buck is early education and teaching our youth the dangers of heroin and drug addiction,” he said. Eckhoff said the short-term focus on combating heroin in the county centers on ensuring the Robert Crowne partnership goes smoothly and expands. But he also said the coalition is looking at the use of Vivitrol, a prescription injectable medicine used to treat alcohol and opioid dependence by curbing cravings. Eckhoff said he would continue to be open to the advice of other professionals. “I think [the county board] respect[s] all the countywide elected officials,” Eckhoff said. “If every person is saying the same thing, I think it would be a little tough to buck the horse.”

Scout’s project helps Pleasantdale Middle School By KRISTIN PEDICINI kpedicini@shawmedia.com WILLOW SPRINGS – A Willow Springs resident broke ground at the first day of his Eagle Scout project at Pleasantdale Middle School on Monday. Troop 69 Scout Gabe Thalji will create an outdoor classroom for students in the Burr Ridge school’s courtyard. Thalji said Monday’s work was just the beginning of the project. While day one was just enough to lay the stone patio, the outdoor classroom eventually will have 20 log stools and four log benches for students to sit on, according to Thalji. He said the log stools and benches should be ready within a couple of weeks. Thalji, a former student at Pleasantdale Middle School, said he chose the school because he wanted to thank them while doing something with the school’s courtyard.

side then they might be more interested.” Pleasantdale Middle School Principal John Glimco echoed Thalji’s hopes, saying he thinks the students will be very excited to see the finished project. “We have this beautiful area that’s not being used as well as we’d like it to,” Glimco said. “And getting the students involved will make a big difference.” Another troop is also planning on implementing a butterfly garden in the courtyard as well, according to Glimco. Glimco, who said he has so much appreciation for the Scouts and Scouting program, added that having the outdoor classroom also will bring a sense of nature and resources into learning for the students. “Bottom line is it’s nice for kids to see how other students get involved in the community,” Glimco said. “I hope our younger students are inspired by it.”

Goodwill Industries of Metropolitan Chicago served more than 61,000 people in 2013, and it is encouraging that the nonprofit is reaching out to its neighbors and raising awareness for its brand. Thumbs up to the village of Clarendon Hills for moving forward with its downtown master plan. The Clarendon Hills Planning and Zoning Board has now held several meetings to gauge public opinion regarding the project, but has received little criticism from residents. We are excited to see finalized design renderings that will combine modern architecture, mixed use buildings and an accessible layout.

Last week, my kids were doing a lemonade stand in the driveway. Unbeknownst to us, an off-duty Downers Grove police officer stopped by to get some. When he left, he put it over the police scanner. Within a half hour, six squad cars had stopped by to get some and praise my boys (ages 5 and 7). This was such a cool move on their behalf. The boys were excited by the patronage to say the least. They thought they were the talk of the town. This move by members of the Downers Grove Police Department made an impression that will last a lifetime on them.

Responding to ‘Padded Teacher Pensions’ To the Downers Grove resident who talked about “padded teacher pensions.” You are misinformed. The state of Illinois decided that teachers should not pay into social security, but should give that money to the state. The state then would contribute to that fund just as employers contribute to your Social Security. That way, when teachers retire, they will have just what the general public has and the state would have some interest money to help the budget. The problem occurred when the state kept not contributing to the retirement fund because they needed to pay other bills. Other employers would have been prosecuted for this. They also borrowed money that the teachers themselves had put into the fund. Well, now, lots of teachers are retiring and there’s no money there. How is that the teachers’ fault?

Both Prospect and Eccles Fields are located behind Clarendon Hills Middle School, and can be accessed off of Chicago Avenue in Clarendon Hills Ideally players will be able to attend two days of try-outs; if players can only attend one day, the best determination will be made from that effort only. The Cardinals are a professionally trained youth baseball organization committed to the quality development of local players from 9 years old into high school. To provide the highest level of training and objectivity, all teams use professional trainers to provide training and skill development and ensure that players are appropriately positioned in games according to their demonstrated skills. Try-Outs will be conducted under the supervision of former major league player, and current Cardinal trainer, JJ Furmaniak. The teams play a competitive basebal schedule with local travel teams and tournament play consistent with our development focus. Cardinals are also a feeder team for Rhino Elite Baseball, an Elite level travel program that progresses players into the high school level and is dedicated to assisting players in achieving their goal of playing college baseball by playing at a regional and national level of “showcased” competition. If players show the appropriate level of capability within the Cardinals, or at try-outs, they will be evaluated and selectively provided invitations to join the Rhinos, if they are capable and that level of competition is desired. Chama Gaucha carves out delicious niche DOWNERS GROVE – Never having eaten at a Brazilian steakhouse, I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect when I walked into Chama Gaucha, but the entire evening was impressive from beginning to end. The hostess seated us at a menu-less table in the spacious dining room, and explained we were welcome to enjoy whatever we wanted from the circular salad bar. Set in the center of the room, its array of offerings was a visual work of art. The design of the Downers Grove restaurant is richly accented with stone and wood, and the room boasts an eye-catching wine cellar. We each received a small square card – red on one side and green on the other. This worked like a traffic signal, directing the many servers who carry carving knives and skewers of cuts of meats they skillfully slice to order. The men were dressed in elegant incarnations of the South American gaucho – their version of our cowboy. The restaurant’s tables are well spaced so the gauchos can roam freely. After piling our plates with salad and veggies, my companion and I returned to our table, where a server pulled out my chair as I sat down. Our tabletop quickly was filled with traditional Brazilian sides, including a warm basket of cheese bread, a plate of garlic mashed potatoes, warm fried bananas and fried polenta. After making some room on our plates, we flipped our cards to the green side, and the gaucho-attired servers began to stop at our table. One after another, they offered us a slice or two of their carnivorous temptations. Lamb, pork, chicken and beef. We ate until we couldn’t fit another bite. When we found a favorite, the gauchos offered us extra helpings, and when we spotted a stack of savory sausages across the

Back in the Pampas, gauchos can be found tending large herds of cattle in parts of Brazil and several neighboring countries. At the end of their long day, the gauchos gather around the churrasco or fire pit to eat and share stories. That dining experience inspired the South American steakhouse concept. The local

restaurant takes the name Chama from the Portuguese word for flame. I doubt real gauchos ate like I did at Chama Gaucha, though. The entire evening, with its five-star service, surpassed any of my typical dining experiences. When my date dropped his napkin, someone handed him one over his shoulder almost instantly. than difficult to choose a favorite, but the bacon-wrapped chicken as well as the garlic steak definitely found their way to the top of my list. Chama Gaucha also has an extensive wine menu divided by region, and the restaurant staff was eager to share recommendations. I would suggest guests save a little room for dessert, because by the time I’d finished clearing the last helping from my plate, I simply couldn’t indulge further. Because of its all-you-caneat service, Chama Gaucha may be a bit pricier than your average meal out, but it’s an out-of-the-ordinary dining experience, whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply treating yourself.

A looser atmosphere during the summer where the stakes aren’t quite as high lets coaches toy with their lineups and pitching staffs to see which players could fill which roles come next spring. That’s precisely what the coaches at Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South did this summer.

Yet even in a limited time with the team, the coach saw signs that the squad will be in good shape next spring despite having to replace several key pieces. Chris Botsoe, who missed most of the spring with a

fractured orbital bone that required surgery, returned for the summer. Botsoe, an incoming senior and University of Louisville recruit, figures to anchor a lineup that will see some significant changes in the spring. Ryan Haff, Matt Muellner and Jacob White, three of the Red Devils’ top four hitters among everyday players, all have graduated. Haff batted .396 and led the team with four home runs, 40 runs scored and 16 walks and was a big piece defensively at shortstop, but Ziemer has no reservations at shortstop moving forward. “We had a junior last spring

behind Haff, Ben Chapman, that defensively was able to play varsity ball,” the coach said. “He’s going to step right in and be fine. A junior, Jake Ryder, is going to compete at shortstop, so we’re good there.” The pitching staff lost a trio of seniors – Charlie Banke, Austin Butler and Nick Senicka – who combined to throw the majority of the team’s innings. Constructing a staff will be one of the primary tasks on Ziemer’s plate come next season, but the summer provided big strides in that direction. “The biggest question mark is pitching, it always seems to be, but we have a good number of arms and a lot of depth,”

Ziemer said. “I think we have 10 or 11 guys I’d feel comfortable throwing in a varsity game right now.”

Hinsdale South Head coach Paul Hoel has a very structured approach to Hinsdale South’s summer season. He splits his squad into three groups of nine players and has two groups show up for games. Do that ensures a nearly equal amount of playing time. “We got a lot of guys playing time and made strides next year going forward,” Hoel said. “We learned a lot of things about guys we didn’t know much

Liedtke, a Downers Grove native who played four years of volleyball at Downers Grove North, started the club three years ago and has watched it grow from four teams and un-

der 50 players to close to 130 athletes this year (counting both the junior high and high school teams). “I was working for a different club,” Liedtke said. “I had always wanted to start my own club and I said, now is the time to do it. It’s done great so far.” Along with Glen Ellyn, Wheaton and Downers Grove, the Hitmen also have

players from Addison, Carol Stream, Elmhurst, Glendale Heights, Lisle, Lombard, Oak Brook, Villa Park and Westmont playing within the program. In fact, from the top four teams at the IHSA state finals this spring – Lincoln-Way East, Warren, Glenbard West and Lake Park – 17 of the players have been a part of the Hitmen program, according to Liedtke. “One of the biggest things we try to do is build up the rapport and comfort level between the players and coaches,” Liedtke said. “If you know the players on a personal level and show that you care for them, they will want to work hard for you. We want them to try to reach their full potential. The Hitmen are also starting up a girls program in the fall. They currently hold a lot of practices at the Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center in Glen Ellyn but are looking at possible expansion in the area.

Everyday you show up, you know you’re going to play.” The Hornets ended up earning the No. 2 seed out of 17 teams at their own summer regional, and advanced to the championship game to be one of the final 16 teams playing in the playoffs. The team finished 19-8-3 on the summer. “We have a young team and we learned a lot,” Hoel said. “We saw a lot of good things.” Filling in the two middle infield positions after the graduation of shortstop Don Buonavolanto and second baseman Joe Oehmen shouldn’t be much of an issue. Matt Marrera saw plenty of action at shortstop in the spring as Buonavolanto was hampered by injury. Nate Overmann showed he is ready to play up the middle. “He’s going to be a senior, and he had a really good summer,” Hoel said of Overmann. Varsity returners Anthony Nicholas and Tim Dziergas are likely to be the top pitchers next season, but plenty of depth emerged this summer in the form of David Dahms, Mike Zack and others. Alex Briscolino, Danny Mazzei and Zach Duffy also impressed over the summer, laying the groundwork for next spring. “It was a positive summer,” Hoel said. “The kids played hard. We’re looking forward to next season. We’re really excited about this group.”

GLEN ELLYN – With injuries a factor during qualifying, the Hitmen Volleyball Club (HVC) 15 Black team went into the recent Boys Junior National Championship tournament in Houston seeded No. 32 out of 35 teams. But once there, the 12-player squad made quite a name for themselves, finishing as the top team in Illinois and 10th overall. Playing a total of 13 matches, the Hitmen defeated teams from Wisconsin, California, New York, Pennsylvania and Hawaii. “The boys worked hard and they got players back healthy,” Hitmen Volleyball Club owner and director Mike Liedtke said. “They moved up every single day even though they had the toughest road out of anybody. They played top teams every single day.” Team members Sean Farmer, Ethan Marchetti, Grant Tecson, Kevin Tarczon, Anthony Schlesser, Cam Lilly, Robbie Murphy and Johnny Winkler all will be sophomores at Glenbard West High School in the fall.
