DARIEN – Sitting on a stool near the front register among 7,000 square feet of merchandise, Paul Garrison surrounds himself with boxes of unsorted books ranging in genre. “It really is a labor love,” Garrison said as he stacked the books into designated categories. He and his wife, Robyn, of Bolingbrook are the new owners of Frugal Muse in Darien, an independently owned bookstore offering new and gently used books, music, movies, video games and children’s merchandise. Garrison said the store will continue to be about reciprocity – exchanging patrons’ old or unwanted items for credit, which can be put towards anything in the store. “If we can’t use it ourselves at least we still try to recycle it,” he said. “We try not to throw stuff out unless it’s damaged, and that makes me feel really good.” Frugal Muse also will continue to offer $1 books on its “bargain wall,” as well as a section full of children’s materials, Garrison said. Additionally, if staff cannot find a specific title, they are willing to order and sell it at a discounted price. Along with the retail end of Frugal Muse, the store will also host an open mic night every third Wednesday of the month, along with book signings, kids’ events and eventually a local book club. Garrison has been working at the store for 12 years – 11 of which he has been general manager – but as of June 1, he bought the store from the previous owners, something he

HINSDALE – The deadline for when the Hinsdale Township High School Teachers Association can legally strike is quickly approaching as both the District 86 Board of Education and teachers association continue contract negotiations and countering media statements. The latest release from the teachers association is a direct response to a news release issued from School Board President Richard Skoda, in which he reiterates the board’s disappointment by the “premature strike vote” called by National Education Association Union negotiator Naomi Shepherd. A news release sent from teachers association spokesman Mike Palmquist then insinuated Skoda’s June 16 statement was “riddled with inaccuracies” and said Shepherd is an adviser to the teach-

ers association, “similar in role to the board’s lawyer.” “Shepherd was a special education teacher for more than 30 years and now advises local teachers on contract issues,” the release from the teachers association stated. “While the teachers of District 86 appreciate Shepherd’s efforts, they don’t take orders from her or any other outside group.” In Skoda’s opinion, Shepherd, like the board’s lawyer, is the associations lead negotiator. “They wouldn’t have done something like that unless she had signed off on it,” he said. The association’s release also reiterates that the board has “delayed negotiations and sent incomplete proposals for months” when it comes to negotiations. “To continue calling the teachers’ strike authorization

OAK BROOK – Dennis Keller grew up on the north side of Hinsdale, while his wife, Connie, was raised on the south side of what is now known as Oak Brook. They have been married for 48 years, still live in Oak Brook and vividly recall a time when the area wasn’t nearly as commercialized, and open space was still available. One of those last open spaces is Templeton Reserve, a 55-acre parcel of land on 35th Street and immediately adjacent to Breakenridge Farms, which Connie Keller’s grandfather purchased in 1922. About 2½ years ago, the Keller family purchased Templeton Reserve after its previous developer ceased operations. The land is a mix of 2, 3 and 4 acre estate homesites. “It’s probably one of the biggest, continuous pieces of property in Oak Brook for sure,” Dennis Keller said. The open land features mature trees, wetlands and six ponds. Bronswood Creek runs through the property, and Oak Brook Farms is immediately east of the reserve. “It’s not pancake land like so much of Illinois,” he said. His family purchased the reserve because of the proximity to their property, then developed the land to tie in with the rest of Oak Brook and the character of the neighborhood. HINSDALE – An unoccupied 2004 Nissan Murano was struck by an outbound commuter train at the Lincoln Crossing and the Burlington North Railroad about 7:22 a.m. Monday, according to the Hinsdale Police Department. The driver of the vehicle, a 53-year-old female Burbank resident, had been driving south on Lincoln Street approaching the grade crossing, according to a news release from the Hinsdale

Greetings from new D-181 superintendent I first want to share my appreciation to the district community for your support of our schools and your warm welcome. I have worked in District 181 for only a short time, but already I feel deeply invested in our success. I have been greatly impressed by the caliber of our staff, the talent of our students, and the commitment of this community; there are so COMMUNITY many elements that make VOICE District 181 exceptional. Dr. Don I had a number of key priorities upon my arrival White at the end of May, including walk-and-talk tours of the schools with our principals while school was in session, and meeting a variety of stakeholders, such as our parent-teacher organization, the D181 Foundation, rotary, district committee members, and colleagues in Hinsdale Township High School District 86. Together with District leaders, we finalized the process of selecting the members for the District 1818 Superintendent’s Advisory Learning Committee and have filled a number of open staff positions. I have also been working closely with our board of education in looking at the way our organization operates as a system and in decision making. It is critical that our work is data-driven, transparent, and best for students. The summer continues to be a busy time in District 181. We are monitoring class size to ensure we have the appropriate staffing to start our school year, and our teachers have been engaging in outstanding professional development opportunities ranging from technology integration to math curriculum work. Our maintenance staff is addressing facility needs in each building along with their standard summer cleaning. The staff at the administration center is also completing a variety of important projects as we officially close the 2013-14 school year and begin 2014-15. I invite you to visit our District website throughout the summer to keep up with the latest district news, including information about some of the new staff who have joined our team. I have been energized by conversations around the most effective ways to strengthen and support District 181 now and for the future. We are shaping the vision around where we want to go, understanding our readiness to get there, and putting systems in place to plan how to best achieve those dreams. BURR RIDGE – The Burr Ridge Police Department once again is supporting the annual Concerns of Police Survivors Cycle Across Illinois ride this summer. Celebrating its 10th year, the Concerns of Police Survivors 350 mile-plus ride will take place July 17-20. With a team of 60 cyclists and 12 support staff, these men and women raise awareness and funds for all the Fallen Heroes of Illinois and their surviving families, according to a news release. C.O.P.S. is a 501(c)3 organi-

zation dedicated to helping the families and survivors of officers killed in the line of duty rebuild their lives through various programs and activities, all at no cost to the survivors’ families, according to the release. The other listed appetizers mainly stuck to the typical bar food game plan – quesadillas and pulled pork sliders, among others. I spotted chicken and waffles, a favorite of mine, and almost ordered the dish as a main course. Maybe next time. Instead, I chose the Everything Burger, which piles guacamole, bacon, grilled onions, mushrooms, cheddar and American cheese on top of an impressive half-pound beef patty. It had a satisfying backyard-grilled taste, perfect

The bacon was delicious, and the brioche bun held up well under the weight. The guacamole was a little overly creamy for my taste. Like other sandwiches on the menu, the burger is served with your choice of wide, crinkle-cut fries or homemade chips. I went with the fries, which were perfect. My friend opted for the

house-made chips, which were crisp and fresh, to go with his chicken Parmesan sandwich on pillowy ciabatta. He realized too late that the marinara sauce was missing. That small misstep aside, 37 Bar & Grill appears to be accomplishing what it set out to do – drawing the public in to watch sports, feast on generous portions at reasonable prices, and enjoy the scenery.

BENSENVILLE – On a recent evening, I visited White Pines Golf Club with my appetite in tow instead of a nine iron. I’m not much of a golfer, and my favorite sport is probably eating, so I was tempted by a new menu designed by Executive Chef Rich Mancini, a recent contestant on FOX’s “Hell’s Kitchen,” and former winner of “Chef Wanted” on the Food Network. I quickly came to realize the dishes at the golf course’s new restaurant, 37 Bar & Grill, fit the sports bar vibe and don’t reveal the obvious touch of a celebrity chef’s out-sized personality, which, to be honest, isn’t always necessary. Especially, when the clientele includes golfers hungry for a good meal and a cold beer before heading home. As such, the drink menu has a handful of craft beer selections, including a local option from Itasca’s Church Street Brewing Company, in addition to the regular suds and spirits. The new spot has a big advantage over dark and TVlit sports bar brethren – the entire west wall of the establishment is a window facing the idyllic golf course. On a beautiful afternoon, diners opting to sit outside have an even better view of the greens, ponds and nearby fountain. As my friend and I settled into our indoor seats and browsed the menu, a steady flow of duffers streamed in from the fairways. The salads sounded good, but we went right for the buffalo wings from the appetizer menu, betting we’d be able to handle the spiciest option: coined “inferno.” By the time we were dunking the red-hot chicken in ranch and blue cheese dressing, nearly every table in the place was full. The wings were a standout. They were hot, but not insanely so, and obviously prepared fresh with a perfect crispiness to the skin and a

Soccer state trophy, Yang’s badminton finish top list By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com The spring sports season has concluded and with it the school year. Now is the perfect time to take one more look at the best moments from the spring sports season for Hinsdale South.

1. Goal achieved The 2014 version of South’s girls soccer team will undoubtedly go down as the best in program history. The 19-8-1 record was solid, but even better than the wins and losses was the Class 2A fourth place state trophy the Hornets captured this spring. It was the first state trophy for the program in its fourth trip to state. “It’s pretty special,” senior Mary Claire Ladd said of the Hornets’ playoff run. “Making this run and playing together as a team is great. We said from the beginning this should be our year. Our goal was to make it here and we made it here. “It’s a great feeling [winning a state trophy]. And I think all the girls now, we’ll stay in touch forever. This team is so close and being able to do it with these girls is just fantastic.” Senior Sarah Warren, playing her first and only season of high school soccer, added another first as she scored the Hornets’ first goal at state. Warren, Ladd, senior Elisabetta Bifero, sophomore Madison Cebular and goalkeeper Jean Cote formed a solid defensive unit that helped propel South to state. The Hornets had four shutouts in the playoffs and held teams to zero or one goal in 23 games on the season.

2. Freshman phenom If Judy Yang didn’t prove to be among the elite badminton players in the state during the regular season, she cemented her status in the postseason. The freshman won a sectional title in straight sets, her

3. Courting success The 2014 postseason ended up being one of the best in recent memory for South’s boys tennis team. The Hornets’ second-place finish at the sectional was their best since placing second in 2003. The three athletes they sent to state – Peter Alex

in singles play and the doubles team of Greg Murray and Rohan Chinwalla – was the most state qualifiers they had since 2003. Alex was South’s first singles qualifier since George Alex in 2011. Murray and Chinwalla went 3-2 at state to become the first doubles team to post a winning record in the state tourney since Josh Lapidus and Mike Zevin posted a 3-2 mark in 2008.

4. State meet statements A pair of South gymnasts grabbed a share of the spotlight at the boys state gymnastics meet. Junior Adrian Siaw earned a state medal on floor exercise as he finished tied for sixth overall with a score of 9.10. Senior Ryan Alsip competed in the all-around at state and scored a 46.00 to place 26th overall.

LEMONT – After a spring baseball season that included a 10-0 record and a program-best ERA, one might expect Jake Latz to get a little bit of downtime. Guess again. Instead, just one day after tossing a complete-game in Lemont’s 2-1 victory over Sacred Heart-Griffin in the Class 3A state title game on June 14, Latz and teammate Mike Papierski were on the road to Louisiana State University to begin the next chapter of their lives. This summer, the recent high school graduate is taking two classes (kinesiology and a Microsoft Office class) while also working out with LSU’s baseball team. “This is something that when I committed two years ago [to LSU], I wanted to be a part of it,” Latz said. “It’s a great experience. The summer will be a little bit of a grind, as well as the fall, but I’m excited. I’m ready.” In early June, Latz was selected in the 11th-round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Toronto Blue Jays (who also picked Papierski), but his dream of pitching in pro ball can wait a few years. “It definitely is something I’ve wanted to reach ever since I was a kid,” he said, “so when I got the opportunity, it was hard to turn down. I just felt like I needed to get three years down at college first and to get that experience in; see if I can improve on what I did this year and try to go higher in the draft in three years.” As for the recently completed spring, Latz’s eye-popping personal statistics coincided perfectly with Lemont’s storybook campaign, which ended with the first championship

School: Downers Grove South Year: Senior Impact: The Santa Clara-bound shortstop played with relentless energy and finished the year with a .432 batting average, 25 RBIs and a team-high 42 runs scored. Was named to the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association all-area team.

School: Hinsdale South Year: Senior Impact: The Hornets’ defensive centerpiece at shortstop got it done both in the field, where he played nearly flawlessly, and at the plate, where he was a key cog in the lineup. Will continue his career at Northern Illinois.

School: Lisle Year: Senior Impact: The Lions’ co-captain was also their leading hitter. The IHSBCA all-area team member batted .438 with 28 runs scored and 35 RBIs, all team highs, and he struck out just eight times on the spring while playing solid defense at shortstop.

School: Westmont Year: Junior Impact: The Sentinels’ shortstop hit for average (.500) and power (six home runs, four triples, 47 RBIs), and could fly around the bases (50 runs scored). The Michigan recruit was an IHSBCA all-state selection in Class 2A.

School: Hinsdale Central Year: Senior Impact: Central’s shortstop was in the heart of the lineup all season and hit .396 with 28 RBIs and a team-high 40 runs scored. After the season, he was named to the IHSBCA all-area team.

School: Lemont Year: Senior Impact: To say that this senior lefty had a dominant season is a bit of an understatement. Latz allowed just two earned runs on the season, compiling a perfect 10-0 record. Working 62 1/3 innings, he yielded just 30 hits while striking out 114.

School: Westmont Year: Senior Impact: Moran earned Westmont coach D.J. Cocks’ trust and emerged as the Sentinels’ staff ace. He was the victor in the Sentinels’ supersectional win and started the state semifinal game. Went 7-2 with a save and a 1.50 ERA.

School: Lemont Year: Senior Impact: Along with providing stellar defense behind the plate, this senior switch-hitter was a main cog in the Indians’ offense. The LSU recruit batted .410 with 12 doubles, three triples and eight home runs to go along with 30 RBIs and 42 runs.

School: Downers Grove North Year: Senior Impact: Switching positions from third base to shortstop didn’t hinder Provenzano’s offensive production. The IHSBCA all-area team selection and threeyear varsity starter hit .462 with 38 runs scored and 21 RBIs.

School: Downers Grove South Year: Senior Impact: At the plate, Spinuzza was solid with a .389 average, 15 runs and 20 RBIs. On the mound, he was sparkling with an 8-2 record, 1.60 ERA and just 20 walks issued in a team-high 61 innings pitched.

School: Downers Grove South Year: Senior Impact: The spark at the top of the Mustangs’ order, Taylor stole a team-high 32 bases this season; he was only caught twice. He batted .387 with 40 runs scored, and on the mound he went 8-1 with a 1.86 ERA.

School: Benet Year: Senior Impact: A repeat pick on the East Suburban Catholic all-conference team and an IHSBCA all-state selection in Class 3A, the Bradley-bound Whelan hit .434 with 26 RBIs and 31 runs scored.

School: Lemont Year: Senior Impact: Headed to the University of Houston, this senior put up monstrous numbers for Lemont. The shortstop topped the team with his .471 batting average and he also contributed 10 doubles, five home runs, 38 RBIs and 37 runs.
