A leader in her field Community Consolidated School District 181 art teacher Theresa McGee recently earned the Art Education Technology Outstanding Teacher Award from the National Art Education Association. McGee accepted the award at the association’s conference in March in San Diego, where she also presented a 10-minute spotlight on her students’ work and how she integrates technology in curriculum. After 17 years at Monroe School, McGee will be moving to Hinsdale Middle School starting in the 2014-15 school year.

HINSDALE – A week before piloting his first Senior Jam Session at The Community House, Don Moritz sat at his kitchen table, mulling the logistics of the impromptu musical get together. While the Hinsdale resident has laid plans to rock out in The Community House space on the third Thursday of every month, he wonders if other seniors will support his musical endeavors. “It could be one [person] who shows up, I don’t know,” Moritz said. “The First challenge is getting the people to come there and play.” Moritz, 87, grew up playing musical instruments, learning to play the piano under the didactic instruction of a nun. He later learned to love the accordion, partaking in several formal and impromptu bands. But the question that currently wracks his brain is, “Where are we going to play?” “That’s the real question is ‘where’?” Moritz said. While many seniors can play an instrument and have a passion for music, there are few places to showcase their talent or play with other older musicians, Moritz said, explaining local bars and venues cater to a younger crowd. “So we have to get somebody to tell somebody, ‘Hey, there’s something happening.’ ” Hopkins, the string man, also has a passion for music, and is proficient on the guitar, ukulele, banjo and the mandolin. He’s currently building his own mandolin. “I had the blueprints and was able to buy some wood that was over 100-years-

old to start with,” Hopkins said. “It’s almost finished, I’ve just got to put the back on.” The 72-year-old was looking forward to debuting his instruments during upcoming Senior Jam Sessions. “I just want everybody to have fun, that’s the most important point,” he said. Moritz and Hopkins welcome all musicians and vocalists to the jam session, which features songs from the “Great American Songbook,” the musicians’ colloquial term for music from the 1930s to the ’50s. A majority of the songs the jam band will perform will be a selection tied to old Broadway musicals. The group welcomes all senior musicians, regardless of experience. “All I know is we’re going to provide a very fluid atmosphere, provide the venue and a place to go every third Thursday of the month,” he said.

She added when it comes to opioids, which include painkillers, kids don’t fear it because it’s common and sometimes prescribed by a doctor. In fact, 35 percent of grammar school kids believe painkillers are safer than illegal drugs. But before age 15, 60 percent of kids abuse prescription painkillers – 45 percent of which developed an addiction and four out of five heroin users started with prescription drugs, Tenuta said. Tenuta said prescription drugs can be a gateway to heroin because pills are “really expensive,” while heroin is cheaper and easier to find. “With heroin, [users] can buy a baggie for $10, and it will last for several hits,” she said. “Some of the people we’ve talked to say buying heroin is like going to the drive-thru at McDonald’s.”

CLARENDON HILLS – Robert Crown Center health educator Rose Tenuta vividly remembers when a granparent attended one of her drug prevention classes that was intended for middle-schoolers. “[About two years ago] after the program, the guy came to our CEO and said, ‘Why aren’t you talking about heroin?’” Tenuta said. “And we were all like, ‘This is 4-6 grade,’ and he said, ‘I know, why aren’t you talking about heroin?’ ” Following a discussion with the man, the presenters learned his son recently died of heroin overdoes at age 24 after first experimenting with the drug in junior high. That eye-opening conversation ultimately altered the Robert Crown Center’s approach, presentations and lession plans for junior high and middle school students. On April 16, Tenuta spoke to a group of parents at Clarendon Hills Middle School about the heroin prevention program at the Robert Crown Center, which provided scientific as well as social emo-

There’s also a local review process where the police department has the opportunity to object to someone being issued a concealed carry permit. As of early March, 67 Hinsdale residents had applied for a concealed carry license.

Treatment continues for emerald ash borer By DANNY CIAMPRONE

dciamprone@shawmedia.com BURR RIDGE – Don’t let its size at half an inch fool you, the emerald ash borer is capable of creating an incomprehensible amount of frustration, labor and expenses for any village trying to eradicate it. An invasive beetle that lays eggs inside ash tree bark, steadily killing its host and decimating local ash populations, the emerald ash borer was first identified in 2008 in the village of Burr Ridge, with treatment starting in 2009. “Initially, we found infestation only in a corner of town. So initially, we treated all the trees – all the ash around that radius – and then in 2011, we found signs of infestation all throughout town,” Burr Ridge Director of Public Works Paul May said.

For more information on the emerald ash borer and treatment in Burr Ridge, visit www. burr-ridge.gov. “So we’re not treating all infested ash trees, we’re treating the selected ash trees that we believe have the greatest chances of survival.” The village has 2,100 ash trees on public property road and parks, accounting for about 17 percent of its total urban forest population. Although May could not identify the total number of trees the village has treated for the emerald ash borer, that number fluctuates as the infestation spreads, he said. So far, May said trees have responded well to the treatment plan – only 190 ash trees

Ideally, Burr Ridge seeks to have no more the 5 percent of any tree species in order to maintain diversity and infestation resistance, May said. “If you get the emerald ash borer or Dutch Elm disease, you don’t lose a quarter or a third of your trees, so you want to have diversity,” he said. The village also is giving home owners that have an untreated ash tree the opportunity to receive treatment services through the village. This year’s treatment will continue now through midMay and is being done by Kramer Tree Specialists at less than $20,000. “At this point, the treatment is intended to extend into the future. Then it’s going to be reconsidered by the board every year, but this is our long-term strategy,” he said.

Golfers can make small adjustments to create the right loft and improve distance without having to purchase a new club or visit a club fitter. Many club manufacturers now offer adjustable drivers and other clubs. According to an informal poll on Golf.com, 34 percent of the 2,337 respondents owned an adjustable driver by the end of 2011. The ability to upgrade shafts has also become popular as golfers respond to what the pros are doing. Adjustable golf clubs enable golfers to walk out onto the course with one driver and a few different shafts. With a couple of clicks from a wrench, a person can have an entirely new driver. That cuts down on the equipment that needs to be carried and can fine tune a golfer’s accuracy. These high-tech clubs are corresponding to changes being made to golf balls. Engineers have reduced the spin on golf balls to help the balls travel farther. To do so, golf experts advise that the ball needs to be hit higher into the air. Adjustable drivers can give players the edge they need to produce the right height and trajectory. According to data from golf club manufacturer TaylorMade, 70 percent of consumers who use the company’s adjustable drivers adjust their club at least once to get the desired shot. Afterward, 10 to 15 percent of adjustable driver users report further adjustments as they become comfortable with the features. Although golfers can now put adjustments into their own hands, it is still adviseable to get a professional fitting regardless of which clubs are chosen. A certified club fitter can help a person sort through the myriad options available and make recommendations based on various factors, including the golf ball used. Those who are not fans of adjustable drivers say that the adjustment mechanisms add weight to the drivers, which can compromise efficiency. However, that isn’t stopping larger numbers of golf fans from taking adjustable drivers for a trial run in an effort to improve their game.

But as exacting as the game can be, it also can be just as rewarding, even for kids. Children who embrace the game of golf will learn a host of lessons they can apply in all facets of life. A humbling game even for professional golfers, golf can teach kids lessons in humility and the value of persistence even when things aren’t going your way. Golf is also a great way for parents to get kids off the couch and outdoors for some fun Instea of spending summer afternoons ternoons in front of the television, kids who play in the sun. Instead golf are out patrolling pristine golf courses while getting some cardiovascular exercise along the way. Golf can also strengthen a child’s hand-eye coordination, which can help them in other activities, including many different ferent sports. Though many people do not begin playing golf until they’ve reached adulthood, it’s neve too early for boys ys and girls to start learning the game of golf. Parents of preschoolnever ers can start their kids off with a toddler play set. Though it’s just a toy, a play set can help lay a solid foundation for future golfers. Kids who have watched Mom and Dad play golf or practice their swing can develop their own swings on their play set. As kids approach school age, don’t overlook the nearby putt-putt or miniature golf range ra as a valuable teaching eaching tool. Miniature golf clubs are small enough for many children to use comfortably, ta and kids can use miniature golf courses as a place to put any lessons or advice on putting to good use. What’s more, a miniature golf course is more than just golf, with creative courses and other fun activities, so kids won’t feel overwhelmed with golf. When kids move on from preschool to elementary school, some might want to tag along with Mom or Dad to the driving range. You should try to avoid overwhelming kids with too much instruction or information. Instead, keep things as simple as possible, teaching them the basic swing and encouraging them no matter te tter how quickly they adapt. As kids enter middle school and approach high school, those who are enjoying the game of golf can take advantage of the driving range if they haven’t already begun to. A driving range typically has markers that indicate the distance of a regular hole, regardless of which tee you will play from on an actual golf course. Kids can aim for holes at shorter distances to learn how far their drives are going. You can then adjust the lessons you teach your children based on how far youngsters can drive the ball. As a child gets closer to high school, you might want to buy the child his or her own set of clubs. Look for inexpensive clubs (oftentimes, thrift stores or other secondhand retailers have clubs for sale) because growing children will eventually grow out of their first set of clubs. When your child finds a set of clubs that suits him or her, teach the proper way to swing and consider signing up your son or daughter for lessons. Those first few lessons can prove invaluable, turning a pastime into a passion kids will carry with them throughout their lives.

WESTMONT – The villages of Westmont and Clarendon Hills are looking to team up for a project that will not only beautify both townships but educate its residents. Village officials from both communities are considering a project to construct a shared community garden that would be located on East Quincy Street on a plot of land that’s jointly owned by Clarendon Hills and the village of Westmont. Westmont Community Events Coordinator Larry McIntyre said the project came on his radar late last year. “It was just kind of a coincidence that the village of Westmont had also been talking about community gardening opportunities,” McIn-

tyre said. McIntyre explained while Westmont is interested, there still is “a lot of work to do” and details to figure out before the project becomes a reality, but so far, there is a high amount of optimism from Westmont officials. “We’ve taken a look at the initial plan submitted by Clarendon Hills, and in terms of concept, we’re interested in working with them to make this a reality,” he said. Clarendon Hills Community Development Director Dan Ungerleider said the cost of the garden is estimated anywhere from $60,000 to $100,000 if everything in the proposal is built, including an apiary containing five bee hives on the Clarendon Hills portion of land, a rain garden, stone

But there would be 12 garden plots, so I would suspect we would be looking to create a garden club to help take care of it.” But both Ungerleider and McIntyre said the ground breaking on the garden may not come until 2015. “I don’t anticipate this is going to go very quickly,” Ungerleider said. “There’s no direct money budget at this time in Clarendon Hills, so what we’re going to be doing is seeking as many partners as we can [and] potentially apply for other grants.” McIntyre said both villages still are determining whether

residents will plant items of their own in the garden, or if village officials will do so. “I don’t think this particular plot of land will be large enough to have residents come out and take on individual plots,” he said. “Instead, we’re looking for people who have an interest in this topic to join forces and to work together on this plot as a group.” McIntyre said while the project is being referred to as a community garden project, it will focus on education, such as showing residents how to install and take care of rain gardens or practice beekeeping. “We’re going to have to do a decent amount of planning and development for the project, and then ultimately it would go before the village board and Clarendon Hills elected officials for final approval and governmental agreement,” he said. “But thus far everyone who has been part of the conversation has been very positive about it.”

Monroe School PTO donates speed feedback sign SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA HINSDALE – Following a new initiative coordinated by the Hinsdale Police Department, members of the Monroe School Parent Teacher Organization made a donation to the village of Hinsdale for the purchase of a speed feedback sign for Monroe School. The donation follows an initiative Chief Brad Bloom proposed to District 181 PTO presidents for the installation of speed feedback signs within school zones. A memorandum of understanding signed by the village

of Hinsdale and District 181 provides for donations for the purchase of the signs to become property of the village. In return, donating parties are responsible for the installation and future maintenance of the sign, according to a news release from the Hinsdale Police Department. In December 2013, Monroe Principal Justin Horne contacted Hindale police to inform them of a $5,315 donation from the Monroe School PTO for the purchase of the sign and analytical software tools to aid in speed analysis. The primary purpose of the speed feedback sign is to slow motorists by displaying their current speed, and using additional features including blinking LED’s and strobes to bring awareness to speeding vehicles, according to the release.

Hokkai lends spicy kick to the art of sushi GLEN ELLYN – Whether you’re a sushi connoisseur or still struggling to master your chopsticks, Hokkai has a dish for just about everyone. Tucked away in a Glen Ellyn shopping plaza, the restaurant is a hidden gem among the stores. At first blush, the restaurant appears fairly small, but the interior decor and ambiance provide the perfect setting for a modern and personal dining experience. The simple neon lighting that accents the walls of Hokkai allowed us to focus on the main attraction: the sushi. After being seated right away, my mom and I began to peruse the menu, discovering that deciding what to order was much harder than we’d anticipated. Hokkai’s menu could please anyone, thanks to selections ranging from a California Roll to a Spicy Tuna Salad. The restaurant also serves teriyaki chicken, beef and other cooked dishes for customers who may not be as adventurous or sushi adept. To start off, we ordered edamame and the Kani Salad, which consists of crabmeat with cucumber and a spicy mayo dressing. As we nibbled on the salted soybeans and salad, we decided on what to order next. It was the Angry Dragon Roll – a combination of shrimp tempura, avocado, spicy king crab and orange edamame sauce – that caught my mom’s eye. And as spicy and delicious as the roll tasted, it was the presentation we enjoyed the best. Individual sushi rolls form the body of a dragon, with an orange delicately carved to depict the head. The Pop Up Roll – my personal favorite – was just as tasty, and featured crabmeat, cucumber, avocado and spicy salmon on top. Knowing full well our stomachs were too stuffed for any more, we watched the different creations being

that extended past dropping a pair of games to Glenbard West, Saturday was a tough day for the Hinsdale Central baseball team. But the Red Devils showed a resiliency in responding with an 8-4 win over the Hilltoppers Monday to salvage the final game of the West Suburban Silver series.

Glenbard West swept Saturday’s twin bill, which also saw standout center fielder Chris Botsoe suffer a serious injury. “I wasn’t sure how they would respond,” Hinsdale Central coach Jason Ziemer said. “Saturday was tough, I know I

was pretty down for a number of reasons. But the guys who were playing [on Monday] really picked us up.” The visitors jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to an RBI double by Ryan Haff, a two-run double by Maxwell Peters and an RBI-single by Trenton Barnett. An RBI double off the bat of Matt Muellner extended the advantage to 5-0 in the second and Barnett and Ben Doyle plated additional runs in the third. Haff added a solo home run in the seventh inning, and the pitching duo of Charles Banke and Dan Teska made that offensive support hold up. “That was huge,” Haff said.

“What marks a great team is how you respond after a bad day. We weren’t clicking on all cylinders on Saturday and I think it was a huge statement to bounce back.” On Saturday, the Red Devils finished with one more hit than the Hilltoppers but lost 6-1 in the opener and 4-3 in the nightcap. However, those defeats took a backseat to the health of Botsoe, who was hit in the eye with a pitch during the second game. The Louisville recruit needs surgery and will miss the rest of the season because of the injury, but he was well enough to be in attendance on Monday.

“It is so unfortunate,” Ziemer said. “He is such a nice kid and has a positive attitude about everything. It’s not just what he brings on the field, it is what he brings to the dugout and the locker room. I feel really bad for him but I’m glad everything will be OK. He will heal up and be back for the summer.” Haff echoed his coach’s sentiments. “It was real tough to see him go down,” the senior shortstop said. “I was really glad to see him out there on Monday. It could have probably been worse so I am happy he is OK and it was nice to see him walking around.”

Outlook: Billy Magnesen was the lone Hinsdale Central athlete to compete on the second day of the 2013 state meet when he competed in the 3,200-meter run. The senior should anchor a strong distance group for the Red Devils this spring. He recently showed he is ready to compete at an elite level as he won the 1,600-meter run at the Downers Grove South invite on Saturday. Magnesen was Central’s first finisher when it won the cross country state title in the fall. From that squad, TJ Caveney, Blake Evertsen, Kevin Huang, Matt McBrien and Emmett Scully are also on the track team. McBrien and Scully bookended the Red Devils’ winning 4x800 relay at the Downers Grove South invite, and Evertsen was fourth in the 1,600 run. In addition to running on a state-qualifying relay last spring, Kyle Stiff is also solid in the horizontal jumps. Steven looks poised to add depth in the field events as a pole vaulter; the junior placed third in that event at Down-

Outlook: Sprinter Tavaris Binion gave South a sure-fire point-scorer and elite athlete, but the 2012 100-meter state champ and 2013 dual all-state finisher has since graduated. Yet the Hornets should once again be in the hunt for state berths this spring. Zac Kolar and Marcus Melancon both gained valuable experience last spring as part of South’s state qualifying 4x400-meter relay, and both return this spring. In addition to running relays, Kolar also looks to compete in hurdles races. Charlie Nodus has already shown well in distance events (seventh in a stacked 1,600 race Saturday at Downers Grove South) and Jake Czajkowski will add depth to the sprint events, where South has traditionally been strong. Away from the track, Anthony Riskus should help the Hornets score points in the throws this season. He medaled in the shot put and earned points in the discus at the DGS invite on Saturday. Senior Mark Watson could score points in the jumps. Another invite at Downers Grove South tonight, the Hornet invite (May 2) and the Hinsdale Central invite (May 9) will pit Hinsdale South against stiff competition prior to the West Suburban Gold meet on May 15.
