Founded in 2011 by LaGrange resident Jennifer Conroyd, Fluid Running is the first certified deep water running instruction available in the United States and is approved by the American Council on Exercise. Deep water running is done in the deep end of a pool and significantly reduces the stress on joints, allowing people who are injured or suffer from arthritis to get the benefits of running without the stress of hard impact.

OAK BROOK – For a better part of a decade, everything was running smoothly for Jennifer Conroyd.

The La Grange resident completed her first marathon in 2001, qualified and ran in the 2003 Boston Marathon and finished an Ironman in 2009.

But in 2010, Conroyd encountered a bump in her journey that became a defining moment for the rest of her life. She was preparing for the Chicago Marathon, raising $10,000 with the help of her family for team 10-10-10 for Ben, named after her nephew who was diagnosed with diabetes at a young age.

But even the best laid plans can go awry.

“I tore a calf muscle about six weeks before the race and knew in like two seconds I was going to be out of that race,” Conroyd said.

But she overcame her initial frustration and began researching leg rehabilitation procedures, eventually finding an article about how to rehabilitate and stay in shape by running in the water.

Conroyd immediately contacted the author, professional Australian runner Kevin Beck.

“It was a nine-week plan and only went up to about an 8-mile distance in the water and I said, ‘Well, I only have six weeks and I need to run 26,’” she said. “The guy was like, ‘I’ll call you tomorrow.’ ” After exchanging several emails with Beck, Conroyd trained in the water for six weeks, and the results were astounding. Not only did she complete the 2010 Chicago

device and go through motions of running on ground. Because of the water resistance, fluid running strengthens arms and engages muscles, according to Conroyd.

The exercise also flushes out toxins, improves cardiovascular fitness and decreases swelling from injuries, Conroyd added.

“People love it,” she said.

“It’s fun, it’s different and just appeals to so many people, whether you’re an athlete, you’re overweight, you have pain, you don’t like sweat … whatever the case may be.”

Oak Brook Park District family aquatics manager Jessica Gray said classes now are “usually full” – about 16 people registered in each of the 16 winter and spring sessions.

“It started out pretty small, and we have grown kind of an insane amount of classes right now,” Gray said. “We started by putting one class a weekend and it would fill up so quickly we would add another class.”

There are three other certified Oak Brook Park District Fluid Running instructors: Marcy Dunne, Pam Devitt and Joan Tuisl.

The LaGrange resident is mesmerized by growing popularity of the class. Thanks to a new certification program provided by Conroyd and the Park District, people from all over the United States, including Denver, California and even Alaska, are coming to the Park District to become certified in Fluid Running.

“I truly got into it thinking it would help injured athletes stay in running shape, and then it just kept expanding,” she said. “It’s fun, and I’m really enjoying it.”

Police issue Narcan nasal spray to counteract heroin

By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Few can ignore the epidemic heroin has created in DuPage County, as the number of deaths and overdoses have risen over the years.

“Heroin, because of it’s price and because of its potency, has become a very attractive drug to a lot of people in a very short amount of time,” Hinsdale Police Chief Brad Bloom said.

In 2013, 46 people died from a heroin overdoes, according DuPage County Health Department Executive Director Karen Ayala.

In an effort to save lives, several police officers in DuPage County, including at the Hinsdale Police Department, can now carry and administer a nasal drug spray called Narcan, also known as Naloxone, to reverse the effects of heroin.

“I think you’re going to see officers equipped with Narcan on a much larger level across the Chicago area in the upcoming months because it’s certainly got a lot of attention from the entire Chicagoland area, who seem to be dealing with this increase in heroin use,” he said.

Bloom said Narcan can be administered to somebody

who is unconscious but still breathing after overdosing on heroin or any type of opiate based narcotics, such as Oxycontin.

“It attacks the opiate receptors in the brain and blocks the opiates from affecting the brain, which slows the central nervous system down,” he said.

Bloom said the administration of Narcan is a pilot program set up through the DuPage County Health Department and is done in conjunction with the DuPage County Chiefs of Police Association and the State’s Attorney’s Office.

The DuPage County program was modeled after a similar startup in Quincy, Mass., which was the first police department in the United States to successfully equip officers with the nasal spray, Bloom said.

“These people can be an inch from death and a minute later they’re sitting up talking,” he said.

Narcan recently saved the lives of two people in DuPage County. The first occurred March 22 in Villa Park after a deputy used Narcan to save a victim overdosing on heroin. Just four days later, two Hanover Park Police officers

administered Narcan to save the life of a 29-year-old man overdosing, according to the DuPage County Health Department.

Bloom said that while heroin related incidents have not occurred recently in the village, it still needs to be something that police and residents are cognizant of to ensure that it’s not present.

“Can I tell you how prevalent it is in the community?

No,” he said. “But I don’t think there’s a community in DuPage County that can say they don’t have a chance that someone is using heroin in their communities.”

HINSDALE – Convening Monday’s District 181 Committee of the Whole meeting at Hinsdale Middle School was fitting, as it marked the day the school’s mold endeavor was nearly over.

“It’s awesome that our schedule had us here at Hinsdale Middle School because our focus over spring break was a lot of construction that occurred,” Superintendent Renee Schuster said. “It was quite a dramatic change from right before spring break.”

Work to eradicate mold found at the school was completed in late January, and students returned to the building during the first week of February.

Here are the top five tasks that SERVPRO, a company hired by the district in January to handle most of the mold eradication, undertook from March 29 to April 6 to finish the process.

“We remediated probably 20 years of mold in the building, so we accomplished a ton in this short period of time and cleaned up a lot,” he said. “I think the building now we can say is in great shape compared to where it was.”

“I give them a lot of credit because they make it look very easy and I definitely have a new found respect for anyone who works in that industry because it’s tough,” Huff said. “I tried carrying some of those trays and they were heavy.”

Huff was one of several Oak Brook police officers who took part in the Tip-A-Cop fundraiser for Special Olympics of Illinois.

The department’s 2014 kickoff campaign took place at Labriola Bakery Cafe, where officers worked alongside restaurant employees, greeting guests and serving food.

In addition to the gratuities given to the wait staff of Labriola, restaurant guests could tip their Oak Brook police representative in the form of a monetary

“It was a blast,” Huff said.

“Labriola has always been really generous in just opening up the doors to us and letting us come in and just go with it, so it went really well.”

The event raised more than $1,200, Huff said.

Labriola has hosted four TipA-Cops over the years, but Oak Brook police fundraising for the Special Olympics goes “way back.”

“Every year we’ve always participated; it’s just in more re-

cent years we’ve really stepped up our fundraising efforts,” she said. “One of the things Chief [James] Kruger is passionate about is Special Olympics. So he came into the department he said, ‘I’m very passionate about this, let’s step up our efforts.’ ” Fundraising began in late February when Oak Brook Police Officer George Peterson participated in Chicago’s Super Polar Plunge. Unlike the traditional dives into freezing water, Peterson jumped into Lake Michigan every hour for 24

“It was probably the most uncomfortable thing I’ve ever done in my entire life, and I can’t wait until next year,” Peterson said.

While there was a heated tent to warm participants following each plunge, Peterson said it was easier if he didn’t fully dry off or change clothes.

“If I just kind of drip dried instead of going hot cold, hot cold, it was less of a shock on the system,” he said.

That cold endeavor paid off as Peterson was able to raise more than $2,800.

“When you’re sitting there frozen, and it’s three or four in the morning and you realize why you’re doing it, it makes the discomfort a lot more reasonable,” he said.

Last year, Oak Brook Police Department was able to raise more than $15,000; this year, the police want to reach the $20,000 plateau.

“We’re off to a really good start,” Huff said. “That Polar Plunge really started us off on the right foot.”

mer after Sivak read an article about the Clarendon Hills CO2 Footprint Project, a nonprofit organization that promotes environmental education and seeks to help the environment through water conservation and carbon footprint reduction.

He attended one of the group’s meetings and was fascinated by the potential of community rain barrels.

“I was pretty intrigued by it,” he said. “I hadn’t imagined how big of a project it would be at the time.”

He has since acted as a lobbyist, visiting local organizations, promoting water conservation tactics and deferring individuals to a website where they can buy rain barrels.

donated one to a different local school. From now until June 6, students will decorate the barrels, and the finished products will be showcased downtown in the summer. Residents are also welcome to decorate a barrel and have it displayed, according to Sivak. “[The barrels] are going to be set up all around downtown Clarendon Hills and throughout Daisy Days and there’s going to be a voting period until the middle of July,” he said. “The winner is then going to receive a tumbling com poster to further reduce their carbon footprint.”

Clarendon Hills Director of Community Development Dan Ungerleider said he’s hopeful that the project will generates “a lot of excitement” for the community.

“We’ve been talking to the business community [and encouraging people to] paint their own rain barrels and put them in front of their stores,” Ungerleider said. “We have also been talking to residents, churches and, of course, the schools.”

The winner of the rain barrel decorating contest may be announced at the final Dancing in the Streets this summer, according to Ungerleider.

The Eagle Scout project will be the pinnacle of his Boy Scouts career, an activity he’s loved since first grade when he joined Cub Scouts.

“Originally it was just a lot of my friends in my grade decided we were going to do this together as an extracurricular activity,” he said. “It was just something fun to do.”

As the years went on, Sivak said more and more of his friends left the Cub Scouts, and only a handful made the transition to Boy Scouts.

However, he said it’s the scouting adventures he’ll never forget though that have made it all worthwhile – excursions trips to Eagle Cave in Wisconsin, campouts and even outings that let the scouts try glassblowing.

“Those are things that I never would’ve done if I never joined scouting,” he said.

A member of Boy Scout Troop 51, the Benet Academy junior is studying the environmental benefits of rain barrels in order to attain his Eagle Scout award, the highest honor of the Boy Scouts.

After studying the inherent value of the barrels, Sivak is now educating community leaders organizations about the value of water conservation, encouraging each to buy recycled rain barrels from Upcycle Products and use them on their respective premises.

What kind of officials do we have in Berwyn that would allow parking tickets to be given in the middle of a snowstorm when there is a handicap sign posted by someone’s home and they have a handicap sign inside their vehicle.

By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com DARIEN – The city of Darien released its quarterly crime statistics report April 4, comparing 2013 incident rates to the 2014 first quarter and revealing a dip in criminal offenses.

According to the data released, statistics show about a 28 percent reduction in the most frequently reported criminal incidents in Darien, including assaults, battery, residential burglary, burglary, burglary to motor vehicles and criminal property damage.

While overall incidents have decreased, the city said there are areas of concern, such as a 55 percent increase

in the number of burglaries of motor vehicles, which jumped from nine incidents in the first quarter of 2013 to 14 this year.

Of the 14 incidents, two involved locked vehicles. In three of the remaining 12 cases, the owners were unsure whether or not their vehicle was locked. And in nine of the other incidents, the vehicles were unlocked, according to a newsletter from the city of Darien.

Residential burglaries decreased by about 86 percent, dropping from seven incidents in 2013 down to one incident from January to April, according to the crime statistics.

Criminal damage also decreased 76 percent going from 25 incidents to now six.

Against college athletes forming a union I’d like to sound off on the Northwestern athletes who want to be able to form a union. I don’t believe in this – they’re getting their education for free. However, if they are allowed to form a union, then they should also pay income taxes on what they’re getting.

Total all their education, benefits and make them pay their taxes on it if they want to be considered employees.

Library project not needed, focus on downtown This in regards to the $2.8 million renovation proposed at the Lemont library: I don’t see how $2.8 million is needed when the library is almost brand new.

It looks like it was built last week.

They should be repairing Illinois Street, which is crumbling, and help bring some vitality to downtown Lemont. Also, instead of trying to spend the $20 million on the sports complex Lemont should look into buying the Ace Hardware store, the Peterson’s, buy them out, put in a parking lot, and put in a corner store like CVS or Walgreen’s to help draw business to downtown Lemont. This town’s priorities are way off and they need to start realizing what needs to be done to help this town.

WOODRIDGE – Police are still trying to determine a motive as to why a 34-yearold man allegedly stabbed his 3-year-old daughter to death in a quiet Woodridge neighborhood Friday afternoon.

Robert Bzdek stabbed his daughter, 3-year-old Zuzanna Bzdek, before killing himself inside their home in the 2700 block of Meadowdale Lane, according to police.

A family member told the media Robert Bzdek and his wife – the mother of Zuzanna – were in the process of separating.

“The family has alluded to potential domestic issues between the mother and father – that they were separating,” said Traci Steger, management analyst with the Woodridge Police Department.

Steger confirmed that Woodridge police were called to the residence once prior for a “noncriminal, nonviolent issue.”

At 4:30 p.m. Friday, the Woodridge Police Department responded to a call for service at the home, where upon arrival police found Robert Bzdek deceased and Zuzanna suffering from stab wounds, according to a news release from the Woodridge Police Department.

Zuzanna was transported to Edwards Hospital in Naperville where she later died in surgery. A cause of death for the father was not stated in the release.

Police tape surrounded the home in the days following the alleged murder-suicide.

Neighbor Eva Paprocki said her 3-year-old daughter was playing with Zuzanna just the day before.

“She’s going to ask every day, you know, ‘I want to go to her house, I want to have a play date with her,’” Paprocki said. “I don’t know what I’m going to tell her.”

Paprocki said the girl was “very happy” and “very smart” and that she had known her for about two years.

Neighbor Heather Campbell didn’t know the family, but said they were “very quiet.”

“There was a bunch of police cars [Friday night], then all the neighbors started gathering because we never hear any of that stuff around here,” Campbell said.

Neighbor John Foresta said he did not know the family directly, but did see them outside on a regular basis.

“The guy worked on that house the last eight years and he was putting his life into that,” Foresta said.

Police said more details would be released as they become available.

“He loved her very much,” Paprocki said of Robert Bzdek’s relationship with his daughter. “He was saying she was my everything, she’s my number one, and he did everything for her, always.”

Lemont’s La Dolce Vita caters to ‘the sweet life’ LEMONT – An avid short story writer could probably enter La Dolce Vita, spin a nice tale about the interminglings in a popular restaurant, and invent back-stories for the large family at one table, the priest getting up from his seat, the singles and young professionals eating at the bar.

That is to say, the Italian eatery strikes a nice balance between white tablecloths and casual dress that attracts a wide variety of diners.

My friend and I instantly were struck by the lively crowd on a recent Thursday, after we took note of the stately building’s historic stone exterior and 19th century moldings.

Inside, framed Italian food and drink posters line the walls, along with a poster from the Fellini film sharing the restaurant’s name. Low lighting, dark wood, and exposed stone complement the green, sponge-painted walls and vine details that lend a grotto-like vibe.

All of that is well and good, and, sure, diners are there to socialize, too. But the food is the main draw.

We started with risotto crab cakes – fried to keep the creamy bits of risotto and crab inside. We chased one sea creature with another, next finishing off a large plate of fried calamari. The squid pieces were generously sized and lightly breaded, not suffering a more-starch-than-seafood fate. A large bowl of salad with tongs for family-style serving arrived, unordered, but I was grateful for greens before the next round of protein and carbs.

Perusing the menu earlier in the evening, my eyes took a laser-like focus on the filetto di manzo portobello, and when it arrived following the salad, it did not disappoint.

The four large portions of beef tenderloin were surrounded by sliced red peppers, artichoke hearts and mushrooms. The portobellos’ distinct flavor was especially noticeable, imbuing the rich,

sschmid@shawmedia.com DARIEN – The baseball gods haven’t been too kind to Hinsdale South through the first five games of the 2014 season.

But the experience of having already been in several close games should only help the Hornets down the road.

“We’ve had good pitching all four, five games,” Hinsdale South coach Paul Hoel said.

“We just need the timely hit.

Every game except for one has been a one run game or gone to extra innings. That will make us better in the long run.”

Hinsdale South dropped a 3-2 decision on Monday to Glenbard West after a potential last-inning rally was snuffed out. The home team received an RBI single in the seventh from Matt Marrera to pull within one and had runners on second and third with one out.

But a potential squeeze bunt failed when the pitch was in the dirt and the Hornets’ baserunner was tagged out. A pop-out then ended the game.

“We’ve had some bad luck,” Hoel said. “If that’s a strike there, we will get it down.”

Central soccer sees offense round into form

jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Alison Cerny has noticed a big change for Hinsdale Central’s girls soccer team recently.

The defense has been solid in every game so far, but now the Red Devils are finding the back of the net more on offense.

“We definitely started out the season a little slow scoring-wise,” Cerny said. “But everyone is working so much better together and we’re getting more comfortable up top [in the attack].

“Everyone has been working to get better.”

Cerny scored the game’s first goal in Tuesday’s 3-1 West Suburban Silver win against Glenbard West.

After notching three consecutive 1-0 wins to start the season, the Red Devils scored 11 goals in their subsequent three games, all games they won.

Prior to defeating West, Central defeated Lane Tech 4-1 and topped Riverside Brookfield 4-0. Thursday’s scheduled game against Plainfield North brought another chance for the offense to shine.

Going nearly six games without allowing a goal speaks to the strength of Central’s defense.

As good as the offense has been recently, the defense has been just as good all season.

“Defensively, our goalies haven’t seen much, which is a tribute to the team defense, not just the back line.” Smith said.

“Early in the season it’s a lot more challenging for the offense to jump out there [at full speed].”

Trainer Dave Johnson in favor of Functional Movement Screenings

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com WESTERN SPRINGS – There is a remedy for ACL tears, knee tendinitis, shoulder problems and bad backs.

And Dave Johnson believes the fix doesn’t always include going under the knife.

The certified athletic trainer and owner of Extreme Fitness Results is a proponent of Functional Movement Screening, a simple series of seven physical movements that can help pinpoint potential problem areas ripe for injury. The FMS itself doesn’t require any expensive machinery. A plastic plank on the floor and three plastic rods is all that is needed. The screening takes less than 15 minutes.

“I think everyone should do a Functional Movement Screening to safely participate in a sport,” said Johnson, who has been the proprietor of Extreme Fitness Results for 14 years.

The Functional Movement Screening was created by physical therapist Gray Cook and is described on the website, functionalmovement. com, as “a ranking and grading system that documents movement patterns that are key to normal function.”

The seven exercises in the screening are scored on a scale of zero to three. A score of 14 is a good goal to shoot for, Johnson said.

“Two is average, and we’re happy with average,” Johnson said.

Teams in the National Football League are starting to utilize the FMS for their players, according to Johnson, and he said the screening process is trickling down to college football programs, but it largely remains a mystery.

“I think every coach, every gym teacher should be doing it,” Johnson said. “But word isn’t getting out to the masses.”

His clients come from Lombard, Downers Grove, Batavia and other suburban towns and range in age from teenagers to senior citizens, but young athletes are who Johnson is hoping to help.

“We fixed most of his problems and he ended up having the best vertical jump on his travel team and the second-best at his high school,” Johnson said.

Johnson believes an FMS can detect potential problem areas for athletes and a few simple exercises, such as stretches and kettlebell workouts, are the solution to preventing injury.

Johnson works off a physical fitness pyramid, of which the base is perfecting mobility and stability. In the middle is strength training, and at the top is power, agility and endurance. Johnson said he has had younger clients who were so focused on strength, speed and power that they neglected

D.E.A.R. motto D.E.A.R. is a motto you might see around your school or library. It stands for “Drop everything and read,” and serves as a reminder to ind some time, every day, to sit down and read a book.

This month, make a promise to ind at least 20 minutes every day to drop everything and read. To help you do that, follow these steps to make a D.E.A.R. diary to keep track of

For your D.E.A.R. time, it doesn’t matter what you’re reading, as long as you have your nose in a book. Just pick one of your favorites.

Create a diary Here are a few steps to help you make a D.E.A.R. diary:

Grab about 15 pieces of paper.

Should be 8.5 x 11, either ruled or unruled.

Stack the paper together and fold them in half, so they resemble a book.

Find a stapler, and place two staples along the fold. Alternatively, you can punch two holes in the fold. Use a piece of ribbon or yarn to tie the book together through the holes.

Use crayons, pencils or markers to create a cover that is in-

spired by books. Make it creative and fun.

Read for 20 minutes each day. After each time you read, spend the next five to 10 minutes writing a short reflection about what you read that day. If you are inspired to draw, you can do that, too. Make sure to write down the date and the time you spent reading.

At the end of the month, you should have a good record of all the books you read that month.

Drop everything and read doesn’t have to be for kids only — big brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, grandma and grandpa, and even mom and dad can dedicate time to reading every day.
