HINSDALE – There aren’t many workouts that match Jacquie Fowler’s energy and enthusiasm for life and fitness, but Orangetheory manages to take on the tall task. “You’ll literally be high-fiving on the treadmill,” said the Hinsdale resident, who is now the owner of an Orangetheory franchise location. “I burn more calories and have more fun in this class than any other workout I do.” Fowler, a former nurse and health care consultant, is set to open the Orangetheory Fitness studio location at 894 75th St. in Willowbrook starting in May, but it was a 2013 trip to California that spurned her love for the brand and the workout regimen. “We went [to one class] and that was it … I was a hooked,” Fowler said. Orangetheory Fitness is a “personal group workout” that’s broken into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training using treadmills, rowing machines and free weights. Fowler said everyone wears a heart-rate monitor, which displays participants’ beats per minute throughout the studio in order to show the range each person is working in. Even though Orangetheory participants exercise in groups, the instructor monitors and exercises alongside individuals as they progress through the stations.

ing more oxygen during the next 36 hours, which means your metabolic rate is higher,” she said. “Even though you’re not doing anything, you may not step onto a treadmill or do anything for the next 36 hours, you continue to burn calories, so that’s why people are loving this program.” In traditional workouts, Fowler said one of the problems people run into is when they do repetition they hit a plateau, so the body can’t respond because it’s used to the regimen. But that’s not the case with Orangetheory, according to Fowler. “There are 2,800 different workouts,” she said. “You will never do the same one twice, so you never hit a plateau.” “You can come for three years in a row and never hit that plateau because your

body is doing different things and you’re challenging it in different ways.” Fowler said Orangetheory Fitness is for everyone regardless of age or athleticism. During a recent demonstration, Fowler ran on the treadmill with a professional athlete striding to her left and a 70-year-old – who was rehabbing from knee replacement surgery – on her right. The pro athlete ran at a six-minute mile clip, while Fowler was around 10 minutes-per-mile and the 70-year-old was walking on an incline. “We all had a very different workout, but when you look at the end of the class at our profiles, what zones we were in, we all had the same impact to our own bodies because it was based on our own fitness levels and own endurance,” she said. Fowler recommends three one-hour classes a week, explaining that the typical person will see results after three or four weeks, and after 12 weeks participants will see “a whole new you.” Fowler has always had an interest in fitness, but it was after retiring from her career in the health care field that she was able to pursue her passion. Eventually, she wants to open three or four studios in Illinois. “To be able to tie my entrepreneurial spirit with something that I’m so passionate about is just awesome,” she said.

Bothers Justin and Christian Arquilla are the creative minds behind Gekks Sockless Liners, an ultra-thin “sock” that is inserted into a loafer or slip-on shoe and remains in place with an adhesive gel until the liner is washed or swapped into another shoe. Hinsdale Central High School graduates in 2001 and 2003, respectively, Justin and Christian explain that the idea for Gekks arose at the expense of several Sperry’s, Vans and multiple pairs of fine loafers. “If you’re an entrepreneur like Christian and I, you kind of always have these thoughts in your head like this or that is a cool idea,” Justin Arquil-

la said. “But you’re never acting on all of them, and this was one that it just kind of felt like a problem that needed to be solved.” Gekks allow people to sport a sockless look without discomfort and sweaty, foul-smelling feet that arise when not wearing socks, according to the Arquillas. While the liners have been in development for a year and a half, Justin first realized their potential value when he moved from Los Angeles to New York several years prior. He could not stand going sockless during the humid

New York summers, yet lowcut or no-show socks didn’t fit his feet correctly and were easy to misplace. “I was just like, I’m tired of searching for them. I wish they were just in my shoe,” he said. In addition to their day jobs, Justin and Christian – a Chicago resident – spent the following year tirelessly product testing – acquiring materials, adjusting the liner for different shoe sizes and working with varying adhesives. “I was working 80 hours a week plus at [a private equity] job and then doing this on the side at night and on the weekends,” Christian said. “Eventually I had enough confidence to say we really have to make a go at this and get it off the ground.” The brothers currently have patents on the liner and the adhesive, as well as the

manufacturing of the product. Incorporating the same technology used by NASA and the U.S. Special Forces, the Gekks antimicrobial silver yarns eliminate odor-causing bacteria and resist bacteria, according to Justin and Christian. “The foot odor that you get if you go sockless – without anything to treat it – literally is bacteria eating the sweat, eating the dirt in your shoe and gassing it out,” Justin said. “That’s why all that gas gets clumped in your shoe and when you take your shoe off, you get the terrible odor.” To test the yarns, the brothers wore a prototype for a month straight during humid weather conditions. “They do not smell,” Christian said. “There’s some moisture on them, obviously after wearing them all day, but they still don’t smell after

three weeks.” The brothers are now looking to raise $75,000 by April 15 with a Kickstarter campaign. If they reach their goal, the money would go toward producing the first large batch of Gekks. Kickstarter does not solicit donations, instead allowing interested customers to “pre-order” the product so sellers can fund the first batch of inventory. If the Kickstarter campaign is successful, the brothers plan to manufacture additional inventory, ship Gekks to backers and continue online sales. The duo eventually hopes to tap wholesale and department store markets “It’s a great product, and we’ve had overwhelming positive impact the weeks leading up to the launch and over the past few weeks,” Christian said.

Police and fire volunteers team up with HCS By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Whether draped in blue or armed with an ax, the common trait among all police officers and firefighters is the uncompromising want to help others in need. “We’re public safety, and we’re helping people out, and that’s why everybody got in this job to begin with,” said Kevin Simpson, Hinsdale deputy police chief. “This is just a different avenue we’ve taken to help the community.” That avenue of community service took place March 19 when three sectors of the village, including the police and fire departments and HCS Family Services, teamed up to volunteer at Willowbrook’s monthly Mobile Food Pantry at Hinsdale Lake Terrace Apartments, which serves hundreds of families in southwest DuPage County.

About a year ago, Simpson joined the HCS board, which works in cooperation with the Illinois Food Bank and provides social services such as a food pantry in Hinsdale’s Memorial Hall. “I don’t think a lot of the

general public is aware of the extent of their services, and part of that is to educate the immediate area,” he said. “Likewise, there’s a false sense in the community that we work in that there’s little need or [people or families]

going hungry.” Simpson said HCS is always looking for volunteers and sponsorships to work at the food pantries. So, shortly after the holiday season he suggested a joint effort between the Hinsdale Fire Department (HFD) and Hinsdale Police Department (HPD) to fund the mobile food pantry, as well as supply volunteers. “They [volunteers from each department] were impressed with the number of people that came out, and I said this is nothing,” he said. “Back in the holidays, November and December, when we did the Thanksgiving and Christmas one, there’s 300 plus families that are out there.” On March 19, Simpson said about 150 families came out to receive an array of non-perishable foods, canned items, frozen meats and bread. “It has an impact on people,” he said. “Until you’ve

done it and experienced [working at a food pantry], you don’t realize the need that’s out there.” Simpson said the event was overwhelmingly positive and several members of both departments told him that if the pantry ever needs volunteers again, whether sponsored by the departments or not, they would be happy to return. This was one of the largest joint community outings that the HPD and HFD participated in together, according to Simpson, who added that because of the strong ties each department has to the community, more projects could take place in the future. “All of that has not only educated me, but I think it’s also brought an awareness to both the police and fire departments,” he said. “We know that there’s a need that exists here and we want to help. This is our home.”

Solar panels coming to D-86 high schools By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – After two years of planning and community fundraising, the District 86 Board of Education has approved a solar panel project and will begin installation June 16. The project, which will take

place at Hinsdale Central and South high schools, will cost $101,000. It will be financed entirely by grants and money raised during local fundraisers. On March 17, the District 86 Board of Education announced Continental Electric Construction Co. will complete the panel installation for about $69,000.

class would look at whether or not it’s a wise business investment to invest in green technology,” Fernandez said. “In English class, in discussion and debate, they would debate the merit of encouraging other school districts to take on a project like this.” But the science departments will undoubtedly benefit the most, as staff is already planning hands-on lessons about alternative energy technologies and how to monitor the panels’ energy use in real time. “I think the part that’s incredibly neat is that we will be getting real-time data from our solar panels. And so kids will be able to actually see that on their computers and even on their hand held devices and be able to look at the data in real time,” Gaubatz said. Fernandez said a typical concern with solar panel projects is the installation cost, but because of the avid work by the district and the communal generosity, that is no longer an issue.

“By fundraising all of the money, the entire cost of materials and installation, [the solar panels] will start making once they’re installed,” she said. Fernandez said it depends on exact kilowatts used at each high school, but the estimated cost savings on electricity will be between $1,500 and $2,000 annually. After selecting the bid from Continental Electric Construction Co., District 86 facility consultant John Neiweem said the district will have about a $20,000 surplus as a result of the generous community donations. Neiweem said the science and math departments will use the leftover funds on curriculum materials. “It’s been quite a community effort and it’s been a long process,” he said. “We’re really happy with the results.”

But, as nearly every local school works to make up days lost because of inclement weather, determining the final school day has been a trying and hotly contested endeavor.

Thumbs down and good riddance to the lousy weather of the winter that just ended. Hinsdale High School District 86 is still dealing with the impact of having four snow days, and the school board recently decided not to extend the school year to make up for those days. While that presents challenges for getting students all the instructional time they need, it does give families some relief that they won’t have to remake their vacation plans. Thumbs up to the members of the Church of the Nativity of Clarendon Hills who traveled to the Philippines in February on a medical mission to aid those still suffering in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan. They administered vaccines, conducted checkups and distributed supplies to those in need.

Kudos to Emmanuel Episcopal Church for sharing its space with those less fortunate who need a place to be sheltered at night. Concern over children walking to and from Cossitt School is hypocritical when there are at least a dozen restaurants within a block of the school serving alcohol during school hours. Comparing La Grange to the fictitious television show “Mayberry” is likely done by a person too young to have known the characters in the show. Barney Fife was a bumbling goof, Aunt Bee was a gossip and Gomer Pyle was a dim witted mechanic. It was Sheriff Taylor’s good will, politeness and kindness that kept all the other characters in order. Caring for those who are most likely mentally ill is a lesson in compassion that it seems the community of La Grange could use.

HINSDALE – The Hinsdale Police Department issued about 80 citations during its St. Patrick’s Day holiday campaign. Police issued 30 seat belt citations, 14 citations for speed violations, one citation for driving while license suspended, two citations for no valid driver’s license, four citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, six citations for

using a cellphone use while driving, one citation for an unrestrained child and 23 citations for other violations of the Illinois Vehicle Code. No DUI citations were issued, according to police. The Hinsdale Police Department joined forces with other state and local law enforcement and highway safety partners in the campaign, which featured high-visibility enforcement combined with a

variety of outreach activities, according to a news release from the Hinsdale Police Department. OAK BROOK – At the March 11 District 53 Board of Education meeting, the board reviewed the search process for a new principal to replace Stephanie Palmer, who resigned to assume the position of principal at Hinsdale South High School. The board is asking parents, staff and community members to take a survey, and are seeking a small group of parents and teachers to be part of the interview process of potential candidates in mid April. Plans are to screen applicants and select up to six semifi-

nalists for interviews. Throughout April, DuPage County forest preserve staff will host the nature-themed events at Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center, 3609 Spring Road in Oak Brook. Activities encompass familiar favorites such as FullersBird Fridays bird-watching walks April 11, 18 and 25, and

new ones such as the Kids Happy Hour earth-friendly crafting program April 5 and 12. Home gardeners can reserve spots for “Organic Gardening” on April 6, “Design Your Veggie Garden” on April 13 and “Worms Eat My Garden: Vermicomposting Workshop” on April 23. HINSDALE – The Lane School Parent Teacher Organization hosted its second annual science olympiad Fun Night on March 6. Nearly 300 participants attended the event, including students from kindergarten through fifth grade, parents and staff. Students were grouped in teams of three or four, led by parent volunteers and rotated through a series of three, 30-minute hands-on experiments. Students learned about the scientific method through experiments and activities such as playing nature detectives, studying leaves and seeds, understanding the physics of sports, constructing marshmallow towers, building bridges and making “squishy” circuits using play-dough, according to a news release from District 181. Students will create their own similar experiences at The Lane School’s science fair on April 9, according to the release.

Clara’s Pasta keeps family traditions fresh WOODRIDGE – Walking into Clara’s Pasta, I was greeted by friendly smiles and a palette of rich, warm colors giving the large restaurant a cozy feel. While the long-running dining destination in Woodridge has built its reputation on fresh-made pasta and Italian cooking that’s been passed down for generations, it also has created a charmingly modern and inviting setting in its new location. Dark woods and clean lines make the space appealing for an intimate dinner or a night out with the whole family. My companion and I dropped by for an early dinner during the week, and were seated right away at a spacious booth. Our cheerful waiter brought over warm rolls to dip in olive oil infused with spices and Parmesan cheese. I had to remind myself to save room for the rest of the meal. Otherwise, I might have asked for another basket. While my companion finished an appetizer of toasted “Old World” bread topped with diced tomatoes, Fontinella cheese and pesto called Bruschetta di Roma, I started on a house salad with Italian dressing. It was simple, but tasty. For dinner, I ordered one of the house specialties, Cream of Chicken Pesto. Our waiter brought the large plate of sliced chicken, sun-dried tomatoes and roasted pine nuts sautéed in Clara’s fresh pesto sauce with a hint of cream. The richly flavored treat is served over fresh angel hair pasta. I didn’t know which tidbit to try first, but with a piece of chicken on my fork, I swirled up some pasta and took a bite. Heavenly. My companion was thrilled with all of the meatless options, and settled on the stuffed shells. He soon cleared his plate of the three large pasta shells filled with seasoned ricotta cheese topped with mozzarella and baked in homemade tomato sauce.

We were each happy with the pesto and tomato sauces we chose, but Clara’s also allows guests to choose from more than a dozen different homemade pastas and top them off with one of 12 sauces. On a second visit, I imagine the spicy arribiatta marinara made with crushed red peppers, Tabasco and chopped garlic may end up on my plate. The veal chop Parmigiana also sounded tantalizing.

Clara’s takes a 14-ounce, bone-in veal chop and grills it to medium. It’s served over marinara sauce and topped with golden brown mozzarella, Fontinella, Romano and Parmesan cheeses. Radiatori pasta and tomato sauce are served on the side. Throughout dinner, our waiter always made sure we

had a refill on our soft drinks before we had a chance to ask. We never needed to look for him, but he wasn’t a bother either. While I’m a pesto fan, and Clara’s Cream of Chicken Pesto surpassed my expectations, I already have a few dishes I’d like to taste next time. Even without the entree, I’d go back

seasoned oil. I’m sure I could have eaten the entire basket myself.

HINSDALE – Rich Tarka was relieved of his duties as head football coach at Hinsdale Central on Monday. Central athletic director Dan Jones said the job of head football coach was officially posted online Monday and that interest in the position was already high. “I’ve had a few emails and phone calls inquiring about the coaching job and teaching positions,” Jones said. Jones could not comment on the specifics of the situation, saying only that the coaching position is open. Tarka did not respond to requests for comment. On the Hinsdale Township High School District 86 website, the Hinsdale Central head football coaching job was one of seven athletic positions currently open in the district. According to the website, the job posting closes Monday, April 7. “We’ll have it posted for a [couple] weeks,” Jones said. “We have a committee in place to help screen the applicants, and then we’ll bring the candidates in to interview starting the week of April 14. By that time we’ll know more about which teaching positions will be open. “We’ll be looking for the best candidate to fill the position, whether it’s an internal or external hire.” In three seasons guiding the Red Devils, Tarka posted an 18-12 record and made the playoffs each season. Central battled a slew of injuries last season and finished 5-5. “Coach Tarka worked very hard and put in a lot of hours for our program,” Jones said. “I think our kids reacted well to him and he was successful on the field.” Tarka also was a presence at the school outside of his duties as a teacher and coach. “He put in a lot of time at school for other sports like basketball, wrestling and baseball,” Jones said. “He liked to watch his athletes compete in other sports.”

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA With a perfect 6-0 record, the Windy City Warriors placed first at the IHSA state wheelchair basketball tournament in Peoria on March 14 and 15. The championship was the team’s ninth in the past 10 years. “I thought our student-athletes played their best basketball to date at the state tournament,” Warriors coach Robb Taylor said. “As a coaching staff, we expect a lot of them and push them to get better in all games, and I feel we did that [at the state tournament]. “We made ourselves better and put ourselves in a great position to be successful at Nationals in a few weeks. It was also great to see our four graduating seniors, our four leaders, all have a great tournament and end their Warriors career with another state title.” On the opening day of competition at state, the Warriors defeated the Chicago Skyhawks 42-16, the GLASA Wave 52-6, the NEDSRA Jr. Bulls 39-15 and the Peoria Wildcats 48-14. The squad then wrapped up the event with wins over the Rolling Falcons 42-24 and the Rockford Jr. Chariots 4628. Next up for the squad is a trip to Nationals in Louisville, Ky., April 3-5. The Warriors are currently ranked No. 5 nationally. Daniela Polencheck of Wheaton and Blake Harmet of Clarendon Hills are two of the team’s eight members. HINSDALE – For the second straight year, the Red Devils are on the young side as head coach Lee Maciejewski has 12 underclassmen – six sophomores and six juniors – with him on the roster. Last season there was eight underclassmen on the team. In both cases, that was done by design. “I really like the makeup of our team,” Maciejewski said. “We have a lot of young talent, but what I like about our team is that the four girls who are upperclassmen have been varsity every year they’ve played softball. “I really like having fouryear [varsity] players in the program because they really assume the role of leaders for the younger girls in the program. They help them and are a good resource for them.” Lauren Daleen is back for her fourth variety campaign and Emma Day, Faith Koffron and Annemarie Tracey are entering their third season as varsity starters.
