By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – School buses rounded the corner and cars lined up out onto Garfield Avenue as the congestion of a Tuesday afternoon Hinsdale Middle School dismissal returned to normal. It was a welcome change from the previous two weeks in which the building was vacant – aside from cleaning crews. “It was great to see the kids and many said they were excited to be back,” Principal Ruben Pena said. Tuesday was the first day back for Hinsdale students as the school reopened its doors after mold eradication, effectively ending the split schedule students had shared with Clarendon Hills Middle School since Jan. 23. “It was a little weird being back because we had been at a different school, but it was nice being in our own building,” student Grace Thrana of Hinsdale said. “And our parents were really happy that we were back.” The “half-day schedule” had Clarendon Hills students attending class from 7 to 11:30 a.m., while some Hinsdale students enjoyed sleeping in before attending from noon to 4:30 p.m.
“It was a terrible morning,” student Michael Brose of Hinsdale said Tuesday. “I didn’t want to wake up.” Brose, however, said the first day back went well and everything was routine. Before opening on Tuesday, District 181 held an open house Monday at Hinsdale Middle School for members of the community. The building was cleared for students and staff after inspections by fire officials, the Regional Office of Education and architects from Healy, Bender & Associates, according to district officials. dciamprone@shawmedia.com DARIEN – Whether it’s the beaches of Normandy, the jungles of Vietnam or the deserts in the Middle East, U.S. veterans have witnessed a wide range of military action. One thing they all share in common is experience. Each member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2838 in Darien was sent to a foreign land to fight for his or her country. For those who haven’t experienced the hardships of war, the gap of understanding can be immense. “It’s easier for them to talk to people who have that shared experience and knowing that there’s a place in their town locally where they can go,” said Matt Goodwin, 32, of Darien. But the place where veterans go in Darien, a store front in the Heritage Center strip mall, is now in question. The city has recently been exploring plans to either build a new strip mall on that land
“It was an unpopular war and they tended to blame the soldier, so our mission [Darien VFW] is to never let that happen to another G.I.,” Marchetti said. Marchetti said it’s the Darien VFW that has provided the moral support that all veterans need, especially when it’s right in their backyard. Since September, the VFW has been holding meetings in the strip mall storefront to not only assist each other, but also to help out the community with events such as organizing blood drives, taking part in flag ceremonies and visiting schools for educational events. Goodwin said the city is willing to support the VFW within the city, but is not required to provide anything. With property values being where they are in Darien, he said the VFW is not set up financially at this point to buy anything. To help prepare for the future, the Darien VFW will host a “Rockin’ with the Vets”
fundraiser in early March to generate funds for a new meeting spot. “The goal of this event, or the money we raise, isn’t necessarily going to be used just for getting a post home,” Goodwin said. “All of the money that we raise is used for our veterans support projects and programs that we do normally, in addition to our community support programs and our efforts to find a post home.” Goodwin said the strength of the VFW lies in its members as 142 veterans, ranging from World War II to Afghanistan, make up Post 2838. “We’re not the old smokey lounge where all the old timers sit around and tell war stories kind of thing,” he said. “We’re trying to break that image of the VFW. We’re happy to have you, and yeah we’ll share the war stories and the beers later, but we’re here for you and your families and the other veterans and families out there that need help too.”

By DANNY CIAMPRONE HINSDALE – The Hinsdale Township High School District 86 Board of Education voted, 4-3, Monday to eliminate six permanent substitute teachers effective at the end of the school year. “It’s never an easy thing to tell someone that their position is no longer going to be available,” said Domenico Maniscalco, director of human resources. Maniscalco said with the Affordable Care Act, as well as Senate Bill 7, all school districts are being forced to re-evaluate operational procedures. “Right now, if we eliminated the six positions but still replaced them with a body next year so we have the coverage in the schools, we would still save a little over $200,000,” he said. Maniscalco said the recommendation wasn’t made lightly and that he talked extensively with officials at Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South high schools. School board member Jennifer Planson disagreed with the recommendation and said she felt there was value in having somebody always available if needed. “My understanding, I was told, the history of having these permanent subs was that there were problems in getting substitutes available on an im-

Previously, the district allowed Central and South an allocation of six permanent substitutes each fiscal year, split between both schools at a rate of $29.28 per hour. Additionally, the six subs are entitled to participate in the district’s health and wellness benefits, according to a memo from Maniscalco. According to the memo, these positions can be filled with “on-call” substitutes that are paid at the district rate of $95 per day when coverage is needed. The total overall savings for the 2014-15 school year would be $202,204.98, according to the memo. Starting in the 2014-15 school year, subs can only work 119 days in each fiscal year.

GOP’s plan improves health care for all Almost four years ago, the president’s health care reform plan began with worthy goals: increasing access to quality care and lowering costs for all Americans. Now that the law’s new insurance marketplaces are open, it’s clear that Obamacare not only fails to meet these goals, it creates an entirely new set of challenges. So far, millions of Americans have been kicked off of their health care plans and forced into more expensive federal or state exchanges. And after finding out they couldn’t in fact keep their health care plans as promised, millions will soon learn that the doctor they’ve seen and known for years is out of their COMMUNITY network, despite another one VOICE of President Obama’s pledgPeter es that you could keep your Roskam doctor if you wanted to. We can do better than the president’s health care law, which has brought skyrocketing out of pocket costs and fewer options. President Obama consistently says, “if you’ve got good ideas, bring them to me, …[if] you still think this law is a bad idea then you’ve got to tell us specifically what you’d do differently.” That’s exactly what House Republicans have done. For years, Republicans have been putting forward health care reforms centered on preserving the patient-doctor relationship and offering quality, lowcost health care through increased competition. Republican alternatives ensure that health care is more affordable, more available and more responsive to the American people’s needs without imposing a one-size-fits-all big-government approach. Access to high-quality, low-cost health insurance is attainable by opening health care markets across state lines, allowing Americans to purchase health care in a competitive, nationwide system. Republican health care reforms keep costs down by structuring markets in a way that makes sense. Allowing a greater number of individuals to join together in the marketplace gives them better access to more robust insurance options at a lower cost. By improving and expanding high-risk pools through Universal Access Programs, all Americans – regardless of pre-existing conditions or past illnesses – can have access to coverage. There are also plans that create pools for small businesses, letting them come together to increase their coverage of employees while leveraging the same bulk negotiating power that large businesses use to keep costs down. Obamacare’s massive system of costly burdensome rules doesn’t have to be our future – it’s time to repeal and replace this flawed law with real reforms that improve the health care system for all Americans.

In an effort to reduce environmental damage caused by road salt, the village of Hinsdale is using an interesting product to battle ice and snow on roadways. Beet juice is said to improve road conditions when mixed with traditional road salt, and it reduces the amount of salt needed.

I am very pleased with the effort that the village of Brookfield has put forth in keeping our roads plowed. The one problem that hinders their effort is parked cars. Yes, the rotating parking is a great idea if people follow the rules. The trouble is, too many people do not move their cars. What is needed is for the police department to go on a ticket blitz and start issuing tickets to those that do not move their cars. Many people go through great effort to move their cars, especially if they have to enter through the alley. And then someone will park their car in front of that home, and the homeowner does not get plowed. While issuing snow tickets they also could ticket the cars that still do not have village vehicle stickers. This is a complaint not only for our neighborhood but from others in Brookfield.

I enjoy watching the televised Village Board meetings of the Village of La Grange Park. However, there’ve been problems with the microphones on many occasions. It’s finally been rectified last year. But … Jan. 28’s meeting had long gaps where the mics did not work. This is unacceptable. I watch La Grange Village Board meetings every Saturday morning, and they’ve never had a microphone problem. HINSDALE – On a scratch piece of paper outside an operating room at the Hinsdale Surgical Center, Dr. Sophia Sarkos sketched out with diagrams “the latest and greatest” in eye surgery technology – the Femtosecond laser. Sarkos’ drawings and explanation simplified what makes this state-of-the-art surgical tool special. “Basically the laser can do incisions, plus it can do what we call arcuate incisions, which help reduce the astigmatism and the patient is then less likely to need glasses after the cataract surgery, so it becomes a refractive procedure,” said Sarkos, of Oak Brook. In layman’s terms, the future has arrived at Hinsdale Surgical Center. On Jan. 21, the Femto laser was used on patients for the first time with aspirations of increasing success rates for improved vision. “It’s kind of the latest and greatest of laser technology for doing cataract surgery, so it’s really exciting,” Recovery Room Manager Jan Cavanaugh said. Sarkos said during cataract surgery, the lens of the eye is actually encapsulated. As a person ages, the inside of that lens becomes cloudy, which is then referred to as a cataract. Typically in cataract surgery, doctors would take an instrument and make an incision in the eye by hand, then remove that cataract material. That incision can now be made with the laser. “What it really does allow us to do is have perfectly reproducible things,” Sarkos said. “The goal of surgery is to make things reproducible because that adds to safety.” Most Femto lasers are used in the university setting, and the closest facility to have such a laser is Elmhurst Hospital, said Dawn Kiesling, administrator at Larson Eye Center. The Femto laser does several things during this initial

Sarkos said there is no pain; patients just feel a slight sensation of pressure. “I think patients were surprised how comfortable [the laser] was,” she said. “Patients are awake and they have a little bit of sedation we give them, but they’re awake. Both my patients today I think we’re a little bit nervous and they both said it wasn’t bad at all; they were pleasantly surprised.” Administrator Henry DeVries said the center started exploring the laser about a year ago and, in September 2013, decided to move forward with bringing it in. “We have a very high ophthalmology volume,” DeVries said. “We felt in order to stay competitive we had to have access to this technology.” Cavanaugh said the recovery time is close to a month. And on the laser’s first day, she said there weren’t any problems or discomfort from patients after surgery. “The reality is you’re working with a great team of professionals,” Sarkos said. “We have excellent nurses, excellent staff. They’re there to walk you through it so you know what to expect.”

OBITUARIES JAMES A. BOCK James (Jim) Austin Bock, age 93, passed away in his home in Hinsdale, IL, on Tuesday, February 4th, 2014. Son of the late Harvey and Pauline Bock, Jim was born and raised in Mishawaka, Indiana, a distinguished graduate of Mishawaka High School, Purdue University (Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering), MIT (Master's in Chemical Engineering) and the MIT PhD program where the war derailed his path to a professorship. He spent his 40-year professional career with Standard Oil Company of Indiana, later known as Amoco, engineering our modern energy infrastructure. From Whiting, IN to New York and back to his midwestern roots in Chicago, from flamethrower development during WWII, to refinery development worldwide, to economic forecasting on a global scale, work assignments and a post-retirement passion for exploration and intellectual enrichment took Jim to over 50 nations on 7 continents. A lifelong musician, Jim's early classical piano training blossomed into high school band trombone and ultimately featured both in his highschool and college jazz bands. In 1944 Jim met and married classical pianist and elementary school music teacher, Irene Risley of Oaktown, IN, graduate of Indiana University. In his 55 year marriage to Irene, they shared a friendly IU/PU rivalry, a decades-running game of Gin Rummy, and a passion for finding the farm stand with the freshest-picked corn-on-the-cob. They also shared their love and devotion for each other, as well as for music, travel, church, family and community. Over the years, Jim dedicated countless hours to Kiwanis, PTA, Citizens Advisory Committees, Boy Scouts, Little League, Community Concerts, Adams Street Investors, and Union Church Choir, Parish Life and Board of Trustees. After the loss of his beloved Irene, Jim found on his travels, another love in Phyllis Bennett of St. Louis, MO. Married for 11 years, Phyllis survives Jim along with his children, Jerry (Lainey Pleet) Bock, Jenny (Neil) Moehring, Jonathan (Mia Kelley) Bock, Joel (Mary) Bock, and Judy Bock; his brother, Roger (Waneta Taylor) Bock; and grandchildren, Christopher Bock, James Moehring, Jonathon Bock, Alison Bock and Ian Kelley. Phyllis restored to Jim many of the same enjoyments he'd known before, and cared for him lovingly through his final journey, for which

Mike Solberg became pastor at Union Church of Hinsdale about six months ago, he met Joyce Skoog. “She was smart and vibrant and showed a real depth of concern about other people,” Solberg said. “When she began talking, it was easy to realize how talented she was at organizational development.” Skoog, a longtime Hinsdale resident, was 73 when she died Jan. 25. Not only was she the first female president of Hinsdale, serving from 19931997, but she had served the village for 20 years holding positions on the planning commission, as a trustee on the Village Board, chairwoman
of the fire and police commission and chairwoman of the Zoning Board of Appeals. Skoog was also actively Joyce Skoog involved at the Union Church of Hinsdale, where she was a member of the executive council, which is the main governing board of the church as it coordinates all the ministries and does long-term planning and visioning for the church, according to Solberg. Solberg said he did not directly work with Skoog when he joined Union Church because she was no longer on the board, but she remained actively involved with the church. “The funny thing is that even though she was no longer
on the board, she still wanted to know everything that was happening, she still wanted to give her feedback about various ideas and plans and she remained engaged right until the very end,” he said. Along with the executive council at Union, Skoog also served on several other boards and civic groups in the Chicago area. In 2002, she was awarded the Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award from the Illinois Humanities Council and recently served on the executive committee of the Ounce of Prevention Fund Board of Directors and was board chairwoman from 2005 to 2008, according to her obituary. Skoog’s funeral service was held Jan. 30, led by Solberg. “There must’ve been at least 300 people there,” he said.

OAK BROOK – The Oak Brook Police Department will host its first Citizen’s Police Academy Class for 2014 beginning March 5. This community-oriented policing program allows members of Oak Brook’s residential and business community an opportunity to gain a working knowledge of practices, polices and procedures of the Oak Brook Police Department, according to a news release from the police department. Some topics of instruction include support services and community programs, Illinois
vehicle code, driving under the influence, criminal law, case law, evidence collection, SWAT, defensive tactics and traffic stops. There is no cost to participate in this program. Enrollment is limited, and applicants who live or work in Oak Brook will receive preference, according to the release. The class will meet for 10 weeks from 6:30 to 9 p.m. every Wednesday at the Oak Brook Police Department. The graduation ceremony will be May 7 at the department as well. Oak Brook announces schedule for polo season OAK BROOK – As winter maintains its grip on the area, it’s nice to picture some summer warmth, green grass and outdoor sports. That setting will be a reality in a few months, when the polo season kicks off in Oak Brook. The village released its proposed dates for the 2014 season. Polo has been played for more than 80 years at Oak Brook Polo Grounds. Since Oak Brook-founder Paul Butler brought the sport to the village in 1922, teams from around the world have played on the fields each summer. Made in Italy conjures flavorful getaway GLEN ELLYN – As usual this winter, it was snowing as we neared downtown Glen Ellyn and our destination, a 9-month-old trattoria called Made in Italy. But then the magic happened. We stepped through the foyer under the watchful eye of Sophia Loren peeking at us from a balcony hung with a simulated washline of silken lingerie, and the glow of a very real fireplace beckoning from a few feet beyond. It felt like we’d stumbled in from an Italian lane and found refuge. Vocalists like Andrea Bocelli provided the escapist musical backdrop. We couldn’t resist the offer of a table looking over the fireplace, the bottles on its mantle sending not so subliminal suggestions of uncorking a sparkling Prosecco. Chianti won out, and soon accompanied crusty bread perfect for dipping in olive oil from a cruet containing garlic cloves and red pepper for a burst of flavor. Sprinkle on the Parmesan, and it’s a tasty prelude to the meal. Murals and other art set a romantic stage in the intimate dining room with its 12 tables along two walls of windows looking across to the train depot. For an appetizer, we decided to share the stuffed eggplant. Slicing into the two big servings revealed sushi-style precision to a roll-up of rich filling inside tender eggplant smothered in sauce and cheese. Entrees come with soup or salad, and we each ordered one so we could try both. We split a nice dinner salad, and especially appreciated the homemade minestrone brimming with chunks of carrot, potato and zucchini that hit the spot on a cold night. My date opted for one of the evening’s specials, the Rigatoni Toscana, featuring an excellent homemade pasta paired with hearty slices of Italian sausage and portobello mushrooms in an Asiago-infused sauce. “It was a very tasty and

light, almost lemony sauce. Our servers were attentive, and refilled water glasses even though a carafe stood on our table. The wait staff was friendly, and we noticed our server setting up a lovely family photo for a neighboring group of diners – a sentimental coda to their evening. The generous food portions
meant we were having leftovers wrapped to take home, and hadn’t planned well enough to try the tiramisu or gelato, the featured desserts. Dessert is an excuse to return, although Sophia’s smile alone might suffice. And with The Glen Art Theatre right around the corner, the prospect of Italian cuisine and

Arkush says defense still wins titles The NFL season is indeed a marathon rather than a sprint, but with the Seahawks’ 43-8 rout of the Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII now in the books, another grueling season and race are over. What did we learn, and where do we go from here? It seems to me the most emphatic lesson to take from 2013 is that, as entertaining and exciting as wide open offenses and NFL passing attacks can be, defense and ground games still win championships. Can there be any doubt after Denver’s pathetic performance on the game’s biggest stage, and how thoroughly they dominated the Patriots in the AFC title game, that the three best teams in the NFL this year were Seattle, San Francisco and Carolina? Could it be mere coincidence that those three clubs all finished in the bottom tier of NFL passing offenses, but were the three best defenses in the league and owned among the league’s best running games?

It was reported Jan. 29, the St. Louis Rams owner and billionaire real estate developer Stan Kroenke recently purchased 60 acres of land in the L.A. market, and it is no secret he continues to be frustrated by the refusal of the folks in St. Louis to update the stadium there or build a new one. It could just be that Kroenke found a deal on land he couldn’t pass up. Or it could be that he will petition the league this spring to allow him to finally build a stadium in L.A. and move the Rams back to L.A. Kroenke’s not saying, but it’s a story we’ll watch closely.

were on stage with Goodell to present the award. Tillman’s signature accomplishment off the field is the founding – along with his wife, Jacqueline – of the Cornerstone Foundation. Their goal is to support the families of children suffering from serious and sometimes fatal illnesses, as their daughter Tiana did, requiring a heart transplant at the age of 3 ½ months. The Tillmans raised more than $1 million and supported more than 300 families in the Chicago area. The NFL presented Tillman’s other accomplishments in the following statement: “Tillman and his wife, Jackie, also contribute their time and resources to local, national and international organizations outside of the Cornerstone Foundation. The Tillmans have helped build a school in Cambodia, sponsored children through the Urban Promise program in Camden, New Jersey, and have purchased and donated over 700 tickets to Bears home games since
2008 through the Bears Home Team Hand-Off program. Tillman is also an avid supporter of our military, and has participated in a USO tour to Iraq, volunteered with the USO of Illinois on Thanksgiving to serve meals to local troops and provided soldiers with tickets to games at Soldier Field during the 2013 season.” While the award was certainly the high point of Tillman’s career, it is unclear what the Bears interest is in resigning Tillman to continue to play cornerback in Chicago. Tillman recently offered a promise to Bears fans that he will eventually retire as a Chicago Bear but also made it clear he is not ready to retire yet. He indicated he is on very good terms with Phil Emery and Marc Trestman, but he really has no idea yet what their level of interest is in his returning. Wherever “Peanut” lands in 2014, this honor and evening were a tremendous moment for Tillman and Chicago Bears fans.

NEW YORK – While it remains unclear whether or not Charles “Peanut” Tillman, who is an unrestricted free agent, will return to the Chicago Bears in 2014, there is no question he will be forever linked with Bears all-time great Walter Payton. Tillman was named the 2013 winner of the Walter Payton NFL Man Of The Year Award Saturday night on the eve of Super Bowl XLVIII at a special awards ceremony in New York. The award has been given annually to an NFL player who excels both on the field and off the field with his volunteerism and philanthropy. Payton won the award in 1977 when it was the NFL Man Of The Year Award. It was then renamed in his honor after his passing in 1999. Tillman was selected over fellow finalists Thomas Davis of the Carolina Panthers and Arizona’s Jay Feely. Each season the 32 NFL teams
choose one nominee to represent their club and the three finalists and eventual winner from the 32 nominees are selected by a panel of judges, which includes NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Payton’s widow Connie Payton, the previous year’s winner who this year was Matt Birk and a number of other retired players. Each of the 32 nominees receives a donation of $1,000 in their names to the charity of their choice, and the winner gets an additional donation of $25,000. In accepting the award, Tillman said “I’m grateful to be the recipient of such a prestigious award. Walter Payton’s legacy continues to be a beacon of service and giving, and I’m just trying to do my small part. I don’t think any of the finalists do what they do to get recognition, but we do it because we are passionate about helping others.” The award has been given since 1970. Tillman joins Payton, Dave Duerson, Mike Singletary and Jim Flanigan as the only Bears to win it. Walter’s children Brittney and Jarrett

Forced to ride the pine after picking up his fourth foul midway through the third quarter, the Hinsdale South sophomore came back into the game in the fourth quarter and helped spark the Hornets to an 84-75 overtime victory against Eisenhower on Tuesday. “I just got tired of sitting on the bench and wanted to do something for my team besides cheering,” Benson said. “The team counts on me to be a difference maker, so I returned to the court determined to play my way in the low post.”

Benson, who was held without a point in the first half, scored 19 points in the second half and overtime. Hinsdale South coach Brett Moore labeled Tuesday’s overtime victory over Eisenhower a character-building moment. The Hornets let a double digit lead slip away in the second half and trailed by as many as 10 points before mounting a comeback.
“We have been looking for that breakout, character-building moment all season, and I think this might be it,” Moore said. “We were down late, the boys were tired, but they found a way to pull out an overtime win. At this stage in the season, that’s huge.” After leading 26-10 at one point in the second quarter, the Hornets (13-7 overall) were down 60-50 with five minutes left in the fourth quarter. That’s when Benson re-entered and the comeback began. Fending off constant double teams, Benson scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, including a three-point play when the Hornets trailed by five with under two minutes to go. On the ensuring Eisenhow-

Ten of the Hornets’ 12 overtime points came from the free throw line. “We have been down by 10 points before this season,” Benson said. “But we are a team that can scratch and claw in the fourth quarter, so we didn’t get down on ourselves and continued to play hard.” Eisenhower threw a fastpaced, full-court trap at the Hornets from the start of the game, but they were able to
break the press at will and establish an 18-7 advantage after one quarter. The pace did not dissipate in the second quarter, as Phillips’ coast-to-coast layup gave the Hornets a 26-10 lead. But Eisenhower went on a 20-12 run to close the half, trimming the Hinsdale South lead to 3830 at intermission. Eisenhower’s press wore down South in the third quarter. Hinsdale turnovers led to easy transition buckets for the Cardinals, and they led 55-49 entering the fourth quarter. “This game started to slip away from us in the third quarter,” Moore said. “We committed far too many turnovers and gave them second chance opportunities.”

This weekend’s regional tournaments signal the start of the individual state series, which culminates with the state tournament Feb. 20 to 22 at the State Farm Center in Champaign.
Hinsdale Central Class: 3A Regional: Lyons Township Sectional: Hinsdale Central Outlook: Senior Brian Allen and junior Juwan Edmond are both vying for individual state titles this postseason as the Red Devils hope to win a regional title ahead of hosting the individual sectional meet. A state champion last year, the 285-pound Allen is looking to replicate that feat, while Edmond is seeking to improve upon his runner-up showing at 145 pounds at the 2013 state tournament. Both Allen and Edmond suffered just one loss apiece during the regular season. Brian Allen’s younger brother, Matt Allen, is a 220-pound sophomore who has gone 31-3 this season. Junior Matt Price also reached the 30win mark for the Red Devils. Central should be familiar with several opposing schools at the regional. The Red Devils faced Lyons Township, Downers Grove North and Proviso West in West Suburban Silver duals this season, and also wrestled against Hinsdale South and Downers Grove South outside of conference.
