DARIEN – Actions speak louder than words, and symbols can serve not only as inspiration but be everlasting. “I think it’s more important that the students at our school learn the lesson that there are things more important than your vanity and your looks,” said Ashley Yong, 16, of Darien. On Feb. 10, as hundreds of spectators looked on during the students vs. staff basketball game in the Hinsdale South High School gymnasium, the junior with the 25-inch long hair did something that most girls her age wouldn’t dream of – shave it all off. “My friend had to drag me into the chair, but I eventually got up there and they tied the little apron thing around me, split my hair into sections and just like snipped it,” Yong said. Yong shaved her head in support of children’s cancer research through the St. Baldrick’s organization. She has never had cancer nor has she ever known anyone with it, but it was thanks to an incident at a hair salon a couple of years ago that led up to this event. “Two years ago, I was at a salon getting my hair cut, and the girl next to me ... was breaking down crying because she was talking about how her hair didn’t look exactly how she wanted it to,” Yong said. “That got me thinking. Then a year ago, I saw a video of a girl getting her head shaved for St. Baldrick’s so that sparked my interest and I’ve been growing my hair for almost two years now.” Yong said her hair has never

The next day, as she walked through the halls at Hinsdale South, Yong said she got “a lot of stares,” but she was also sur-

Yong may have surpassed her goal of raising $500, but she said it wasn’t just about raising money for cancer research and St. Baldrick’s. It was about breaking the chains of what society views as beauty, whether it’s on the cover of a fashion magazine or on a reality TV show on Bravo. “You don’t need material things to make your life better and no matter how small the things you do are, they can have a big impact if you have a message to go along with it,” she said. In between getting her head shaved for a cause, Yong also keeps herself busy with volunteer work, and at Hinsdale South she participates in peer leadership network, Spanish club, yearbook, newspaper, principal student advisory council and outdoor club. Next year, Yong said she plans on participating in St. Baldrick’s again and is also hoping to get a group of her friends together to participate with her, even though they may be reluctant. “People will get used to it anyways,” she said.

Graue Mill receives $2.57M for flood prevention project SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA HINSDALE – U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley, District 5, announced Tuesday a $2.57 million grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency to help fund a flood prevention project for the Graue Mill neighborhood of Hinsdale. Twice since 2010, and most recently last April, floods have devastated the area, forcing the evacuation of most of Graue Mill’s 243 residences and causing millions of dollars in damage, according to a news release. The federal grant will pay for 75 percent of the $3.4 million project, which includes the construction of

DuPage County, the village of Hinsdale and Graue Mill residents will provide the remaining funds to match the federal grant, according to the release. Graue Mill and portions of Hinsdale became part of Illinois’ 5th Congressional District in January 2013. Quigley and his staff met with Graue Mill residents soon after to discuss the community’s grant application with FEMA. The application was in response to the flood of 2010, and the events of April 2013 further galvanized efforts to secure relief, according to the release.

Disney classic to be director’s swan song By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – Just like the characters who live together in the fictional castle, Hinsdale Central’s cast of “Beauty and the Beast” is much like a family themselves whether it’s the students who embody the musical or the director who brings it all together. “This year, it’s been a cast of my friends, which is really cool,” said senior Yianni Kinnas of Burr Ridge, who is playing the beast. “I have friends in the ensemble, too, but all the people who got lead roles are people I’ve grown up with here at Hinsdale Central.” After casting in November and starting rehearsals shortly after winter break, Hinsdale Central High School will present its first rendition “Beauty and the Beast” on March 13. The cast will present four shows between March 13 and 16. For director Christine Hicks, the final curtain will

directed 65 shows for 30 years at the high school, plans to retire at the end of the school year.
“I think there’s something really wonderful about filling an auditorium with people of all ages, and the look on kids’
faces when they see these stories come to life,” Hicks said. Senior Jack Cherry has done three musicals at the high school – all under Hicks’ direction – and explained that Hicks has been an amazing leader within the school’s thespian community. “She’s done so much for the school and everything from the drama club has risen from her,” said Cherry, who is playing Gaston. “Just to be with her on her way out is so cool; she’s someone I respect so much.” However, Hicks’ influence goes beyond the stage and into the classroom, as she is not only retiring from directing, but she also is stepping down from her position as Hinsdale Central’s English teacher. “In her class last year, I really grew as a writer and I connected with her while working on my essays,” said senior Sarah Hansen, who will play Belle. For the first time in recent memory, the show will be

She added she still gets the same joy from seeing the costumes, watching the kids’ enjoyment and being there as the production comes together from the first rehearsal to the last. “I think the kids are just great and I do appreciate all the staff that works so hard,” Hicks said. “Without the music teacher, without the choreographer, set designer, orchestra, it wouldn’t be the same show. They’re all wonderful people to work with.”

Everyone said, “Absolutely.” “I thought what a hairbrained idea, picking up peoples’ junk, but then I researched it a little further and it seemed to be kind of a service that was duck tailed into my customer service background,” said Schick, part owner of a 1-800-GOT-JUNK? franchise in Willowbrook. “I thought, this sounds unique.” Schick and his wife, Gail, are celebrating their 10th anniversary as franchise owners in Willowbrook, where, among other things, they specialize in junk removal and have even appeared on the television series “Hoarders” seven times. But it wasn’t always the glamorous world of junk for the Frankfort couple. Prior to owning the franchise, Sam and spent 26 years working in

HINSDALE – The Indian Prairie School District 204 Board of Education has appointed Karen Sullivan of Hinsdale as the next superintendent of schools. Sullivan is a familiar face in District 204, with 18 years of experience in the areas of special education, human resources and leading schools, according to a news release from District 204. The new superintendent also has experience working in Elmhurst Community School District 205, where she served as assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction. While there, she implemented an intervention system used to better support students with special needs. She also facilitated the incorporation of Common Core state standards into the district’s curriculum, according to the release.

Joining forces to boost youth mentoring The impact one person can have on another, especially that of a caring adult on the life of a vulnerable youth, can last a lifetime. As coordinator of the MetroMentors program at Metropolitan Family Services DuPage, my job is to match such mentors and mentees. Effective mentoring relationships can help increase children’s self-esteem, social competence, academic achievement and positive life choices. Mentors often find they gain much by giving their time, attention and support. Though many stories have been told about the benefits of mentoring, another story that should be shared is about the COMMUNITY organizational partnerships VOICE that are helping programs Marsha such as MetroMentors survive Ndoko and grow. In our case, joining forces with local school entities such as District 45 and organizations such as Parkview Community Church in Glen Ellyn has been a recipe for success. MetroMentors provides weekly mentoring opportunities in schools by working with various DuPage school districts, including District 45. Through Kathy Gerber, the guidance counselor at Jefferson Middle School, we at MetroMentors discovered Parkview was interested in deepening its mentoring outreach. Steve King, worship arts pastor at Parkview Community Church, said: “As we considered the requirements of starting up a mentoring program with the District 45 schools, we knew there were areas of expertise we were not qualified to address, such as the administration, screening, oversight and coordination between the schools, students and mentors. MetroMentors has filled that role with Parkview and District 45. The result has been a partnership that maximizes our ability to focus on recruiting and engaging mentors with students at the schools.” As a result of the partnership, on average, students with mentors saw a 70 percent increase in academic performance, an 82 percent improvement in social or emotional challenges, an 85 percent improvement in learning, as well as performance increases in a number of other areas. MetroMentors greatly appreciates the support of Parkview Community Church, District 45, other participating school districts and other partners who are helping to support mentoring services and benefit the greater DuPage community. MetroMentors always has a demand for mentors, especially adult males and volunteers who can donate time during the school day. Whenever we get heavy snow, Lemont seems to have the streets cleared faster and better than most of the other suburbs. Right now, the six-member Lemont Village Board and the mayor, Mr. Brian Reaves, are deciding on whether they (and only they) should obligate the Lemont taxpayers to be responsible for a sports complex that is estimated to cost $21 million, with finance costs of up to $18 million. They are doing so after they found a private source of funding, which allowed them to legally deny any binding input from the residents and voters of Lemont. This means that out of the more than 16,000 residents of Lemont, only seven people have a voice in approving a high-risk project. ... Many of us in Lemont have complained about this maneuver and have been repeatedly told by the Lemont board and mayor, “You elected us, and that means that we can do what we want,” and, “If you don’t like what we’re doing, then vote us out [at the] next election.” This is not how a representative democracy is supposed to work and, besides, they can do a lot of damage in the next three years. Please help us get our right to vote on this project by publicizing our plight.

possessions, the owners don’t want to see their things crushed into the back of a truck or handled improperly. “Even though it is considered junk, peoples’ burning question when we’re outside is, ‘What are you going to do with our stuff?’” Sam said. “The reality is if we can find somebody else who can use it, we’ll try and find them.” After pickup, the trucks bring the items back to the warehouse in Willowbrook to be sorted. During the last 10 years, the couple said thousands of items have been donated to nonprofits, and 75 percent of the items collected have gone on to be recycled or repurposed. The couple has encountered incidents of hoarding, and even situations they’ve had to walk away from and call the health department, including one incident where a townhouse had 450 birds flying freely. But it’s not all junk the company encounters. A few years ago while cleaning out a garage in Hinsdale, Sam found nautical gear from 1924, which included a ship’s bell, two ship wheels and a gyroscope. “I’m looking at this stuff and

I’m thinking this has to have some historical value to someone,” Sam said. And it turns out it did. Back in the early 1900s, ferries would carry railroad cars to Ludington, Mich. and back. After some research, Sam discovered a historical museum in Ludington that was putting together a maritime museum, and the volunteers were more than happy to have the donated artifacts. Another find struck close to home for Sam. During the World War lI attack on Pearl Harbor, Sam’s uncle, a medical officer, was shot and later died at a hospital. On the 50th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, the family went to Hawaii for a dedication ceremony as a clinic on Hickam Air Force base was named for Sam’s uncle, William Schick. Then a few years ago, while looking through the back of the truck, Sam found a framed newspaper article dated Dec. 11, 1941, four days after the Pearl Harbor attack, identifying six Chicago men killed in Hawaii, including his uncle. “And that’s when Sam looked at me and he said that it’s moments like that where we’re absolutely doing the right thing,” Gail said. “It’s those moments in life where you just feel like you’re in the right place at the right time.”

Shirley McPherson Carlson, age 87, died in the arms of her son, Doug, and daughter, Kim, on February 9, 2014, at Sunrise Assisted Living in Willowbrook, IL. Shirley was born in Sewickley, PA on May 24, 1926 to the late Carl McPherson and Margaret McPherson Wiley of Lancaster, PA. She graduated from Westchester State Teachers College. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Elmhurst. Shirley retired in 1987 from York Community High School where she taught physical education for 21 years. She was married to Allen M. Carlson for 60 years. Shirley is survived by her sister, Mary Medicus of Conshohoken, PA; one son, Douglas (Bernice) of Glen Ellyn; daughter, Kimberly (Larry Shatuck) of Portland OR; two grandsons, Ryan Carlson (Alissa) of Chicago and Kevin Carlson of Glen Ellyn; one great granddaughter, Amelia; two nephews and one niece. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen; and her daughter, Sue Ellen Tarantello. CLARENDON HILLS – In the summer of 1889, Vincent van Gogh created one of the most iconic works in art history – “The Starry Night.” The surreal nature of this oil painting isn’t that it’s a canvas of colors thoughtfully strung together, but the fact that even 125 years later, the image invokes the same curiosity and genuine interest of viewers, including young children. Local educators recently expanded a program which similarly tries to expand students’ thought processes through art. Art Express, presented by the Prospect School PTA, is a program that has taken place at Prospect School for about five years. First, teachers carefully select pieces of art, which align with a given lesson plan. Then, the artwork is presented to the students, who are instructed to “read” the piece, effectively using both the right and left sides of one’s brain. “You can just see their minds working on what they see and working it into the context of the painting,” said Barb Maduzia of Clarendon Hills, a member of the Parent Teacher Association and coordinator for the Art Express program. For example, Maduzia said while first graders are learning about Washington, D.C., they will be introduced to paintings of George Washington; or, when fourth graders learn about Paul Revere, they

Teachers often ask the class what they think happened right before a particular piece was painted, what effect the work had on society, or what meaning and feeling the artist was trying to convey. “The kids have a chance to form their own opinion, state their thoughts and back them up with what they see,” Maduzia said. Art Express was introduced at Prospect and is currently taking place at Prospect, Elm, Oak and The Lane. Maduzia said she hopes to jumpstart the program at the rest of the District 181 schools during the 2014-15 school year. Evans agreed, and said the enthusiasm is evident with all her students. “Just the excitement you see in them it makes it all worthwhile,” Evans said. “They’re excited about what they’ve learned and they recognized these paintings.”

Parishioners take medical mission trip to Philippines By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com CLARENDON HILLS – It only took about a week after Typhoon Haiyan devastated the Philippines before the Rev. Aimee Delevett was approached with an idea from some parishioners to head to the country for a medical mission trip. “I said ‘great,’ let’s talk about what I can do to support you all,” said Delevett, of the Church of the Holy Nativity in Clarendon Hills. Delevett said the “mastermind” behind the trip to the province of Iloilo was Jo Ann Jaen-Lagman of Naperville, who along with 13 other parishioners set out Monday for the 10-day medical mission trip. “The more immediate needs have been met like broken bones and things like that, but the more chronic illnesses like diabetes, high blood pressure, some maternal care, some of the regular check-ups
for the kids that are on a regular schedule by age have been disrupted,” Jaen-Lagman said. Most of the parishioners on the trip work in the medical field, as well as Jaen-Lagman, who grew up in the Philippines. Members of Jaen-Lagman’s family who still live there were out of harms way from the typhoon. In addition, the church and parishioners raised more than $20,000 for the trip, which Delevett said would be spent on medical supplies and relief items. All of the funds will go toward the effort as everyone going on the trip paid for their own travels. “It’s very clearly part of Church of the Holy Nativity’s mission to bring that light and hope of Christ into the world in places of hopelessness and darkness, and I’m just so grateful for and proud of JoAnn and the other parishioners who have worked so hard to make this trip happen,” Delevett said.

Fire departments conduct ice rescue training HINSDALE – The Hinsdale and Oak Brook fire departments recently conducted annual ice rescue training in a pond at the Dean Nature Sanctuary in Oak Brook. There are about 50 retention ponds and bodies of water, including a large stretch of Salt Creek, peppered throughout the boundaries of both villages, according to a news release from the Hinsdale Fire Department. In the event of a “fall thru the ice” emergency, both departments will be ready. The release also offered tips for people who fall through ice. They should try to keep as much of their body out of the water as possible by pulling the up onto the ice ledge. By doing this, the legs will float to the top of the water making it possible to kick out of the hole and onto more stable ice.

Berwyn’s Wishbone spreads Southern charm BERWYN – Several months before visiting Wishbone last week, I went to a market and bought everything I needed to make shrimp and grits. Unfortunately, after that grocery stop and each subsequent trip, I’ve managed to eat all the bacon before I actually get around to making the dish, and the shrimp are still waiting in the freezer. So when I saw the Southern favorite on the menu at Wishbone, I ordered it as an appetizer without hesitation. I’m happy I did; my craving now can rest easy. The creamy, cheesy grits supporting plump shrimp, bacon, mushrooms, white wine and scallions was a personal favorite when my companion and I ate at Wishbone’s pop-up location, connected to Olive or Twist Martini Bar in Berwyn. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, retaining some snap, and the bites of bacon stayed crispy – never an easy trick. The popular Chicago barbecue joint returned to Berwyn this winter on a trial run through March. If it catches on, people will have a new home base for fried chicken, pulled pork, beef brisket, crab cakes, catfish, rainbow trout and other downhome belly-pleasers. The new spot sits in Berwyn’s charming Depot District, along with neighboring bars, restaurants, gift shops and a comedy club. During our visit, my companion and I sat at a table with a nice view through the large picture window. Out front, trains rolled by to create a fun atmosphere – they could be seen but not heard. And with exposed brick walls and ductwork, along with other trendy but warm interior design elements, the restaurant manages to conjure both a Southern and urban feel. Fitting the theme, blues and jazz soundtracked the friendly and attentive service. As soon as we were seated,

Hinsdale Central pull even with York in West Suburban Silver By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – After the fact, Matt Rafferty and the rest of Hinsdale Central’s boys basketball team were able to admit how big Tuesday’s game against York was. “We all knew that it was to share conference, depending on the games Friday, so we knew it was a big game and we put everything on the line,” the Central junior forward said. “But we tried to treat it like a regular game.” The Red Devils won 50-47 to pull into a first-place tie with the Dukes atop the West Suburban Silver conference. Both teams are 10-1 in the league, and each has one game left on the WSS schedule tonight. York faces Oak Park-River Forest on the road while Central hosts Glenbard West. Central, the defending Silver champs, briefly savored the win over York before turning its attention to Glenbard West. “We’ve got to get this win Friday, and we’re going to focus on that in practice,” Rafferty said. “Hopefully after that we’ll feel really good about [where we’re at].” The Red Devils (19-6 overall) never trailed, but the first half was a defensive struggle. Central led 9-8 after a quarter and 21-18 at halftime. The third quarter was when Central made its move. An 8-0 run at the start of the second half pushed the lead to double-digits. The Hornets led by 15 points in the first-half before Morton mounted a big comeback in the second half. Hinsdale South (14-11 overall, 5-6 WSG) grabbed a 10-1 lead and held the Mustangs without a basket for more than four minutes, but couldn’t sustain that momentum. Brothers and Hinsdale Central wrestlers Brian Allen (senior) and Matt Allen (sophomore) won sectional titles on Saturday to earn spots at the state tournament, which started Thursday and continues through Saturday. Older brother Jack Allen, a state champion at 285 pounds in 2011, will be on hand at the State Farm Center in Champaign as Brian looks to defend his 285-pound state title and Matt (220 pounds) eyes his first state championship. “Jack’s going to be down there, which makes me pretty happy,” said Matt Allen, who is making his state debut. Brian Allen has the chance to grab family bragging rights at the state tourney. Win a title and he will become the first two-time state champ among his siblings. If he medals, he will become the first fourtime medal winner among his brothers, but he refuses to look that far down the line. “You win state titles by taking things one match at a time, and I don’t want to get ahead of myself,” he said. The Hinsdale South senior was a surprise state wrestling medalist last year in his first trip to the state finals, and now that he’s going back again this year, he has a better idea of what’s in store at state, which started Thursday in Champaign. “Last year down there I wasn’t really nervous, but it is an experience,” said Maslow, who finished third at 145 pounds at the Hinsdale Central sectional Saturday. “You’ve got 20,000 seats, and

they might not be all full but it’s definitely a big tournament that nothing else compares to. A narrow 2-1 win in a wrestleback semifinal sealed his state berth, and his 10-4 win in the third place match improved his seeding for state. The fact
that Maslow survived perhaps the toughest weight at what was billed as the toughest sectional in the state provided a confidence boost. “Definitely, I think so,” he said. “Looking at the predictions, I knew I was going to have a tough sectional. “I’m excited. I like wrestling and I’m happy I can go downstate again. That was my goal – well, I want to place, but you have to make it first, and I’m happy I got out of [the sectional].” Having state experience also gave Maslow a good idea of the best way to prepare for the rigors of the biggest tournament in the state. “You only have three days
of practice [before state], so maybe you do a little conditioning, but I’m not going to be changing my game up too much,” he said. “What worked [at the sectional] has worked the whole year, and that’s what I’m going to be doing [at state].” South sophomore Josh King fell in his first sectional match at 220 pounds but won his next three matches, securing his state berth with a pin of Morton’s Kevion Anderson in a wrestleback semifinal. He finished fourth at the sectional and earned his second trip to state. Senior Nick Perisin (126) also wrestled at the sectional but did not qualify for state.

Anthony Marlowe’s love of cars and racing was born on Archer Avenue, the famous street that cuts a swath through Chicago’s southside and the city’s southwest suburbs. “I’ve been a lifelong racing fan since back in the day running cars up and down Archer Avenue,” Marlowe said. “I’ve always had an affinity for it.” Now a successful businessman, Marlowe was able to turn his love into a reality as he became a minority owner with Swan Racing in January. Swan Racing, which is based in Statesville, N.C., has two cars that compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, No. 26 Cole Whitt and No. 30 Parker Kligerman. As the NASCAR season starts Sunday with the Daytona 500, Marlowe will be one of hundreds of thousands of people in attendance as he watches Whitt and Kligerman compete in the race, but for him, it will be all business, which coincidentally is how he became a NASCAR owner. After graduating from Lyons Township High School, Marlowe moved to Iowa City, Iowa, to go to college before he quickly realized it wasn’t for him. “I didn’t last very long,” he said. “I started working for a company called MCI, and they asked me to run their sales team in Arlington, Va. so I did that for a few years. How many 19-year olds get to be a manager and get that kind of experience.” MCI brought Marlowe back to Iowa City in 2001. Two years later, he co-founded TMone, a domestic business process outsourcing firm that has since spread to four locations, employs more than 1,000 people and has been named one of Inc. Magazine’s fastest growing private companies seven years in a row. He became a NASCAR team sponsor in 2011 before selling TMone last year. He is still president of the company. His business success has allowed him to achieve the dream many sports fans harbor. “I always thought one day I’d like to be part of [owning a
