HINSDALE – Receiving nothing but praise and kind words from the District 181 Board of Education members, Superintendent Renee Schuster was released from her contract at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting per her request. “It was a very hard decision, but family is always first,” said Schuster, who has served as superintendent since 2010. “This is a great community, and we’ve got great students, great teachers and great leaders.” School Board President Marty Turek said the board agreed to release Schuster from her contract at her request as she plans to return to St. Louis at the end of the school year to

be closer to her parents. Turek said Schuster will be fully committed to the district through June. “All in all, District 181 is a better place because of the leadership of Dr. Schuster,” Turek said. School board member Gary Clarin said while he’s only been on the board for 10 months, he “really appreciated” everything Schuster did for the district. “I just wish you the best and I hope everything goes well for your family in the future,” Clarin said. Vice President Jill Vorobiev, who came on the board at the same time as Clarin, agreed and thanked Schuster for her efforts and for putting together the team she did to help “further the goals of the district.”

The rest of the board shared similar sentiment toward Schuster. “I know this is a difficult decision, and I wish you and your parents the best in the future,” board member Brendan Heneghan said. Schuster had been an administrator in Missouri schools since 1993, holding leadership positions with the Francis Howell School District as superintendent and Ladue School District as executive director of student services and director of student instructional resources. The District 181 Board of Education will discuss at a future meeting a course of action for filling the superintendent position. Schuster said it has been a pleasure working with the

Adjusts school calendar to address missed days By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – The combination of closures because of brutal winter weather and mold eradication has put a strain on District 181’s school year calendar for 2013-14, leaving the board to figure out how to account for the missed days. So far this year, school was canceled district wide four times because of extreme cold, while class had

to be canceled three times at Hinsdale Middle School for mold cleanup. The board agreed it was important to address the lost time and have the school year conclude at the same time for all students in early June. “At the end of the year, there’s too much going on,” school board member Gary Clarin said. “People have already checked out of school.” At Monday’s meeting, the board decided school will be in session Monday for Hins-

dale Middle School only – the date previously was determined a nonattendance day for President’s Day. School will then be in session for all schools in the district Tuesday, which previously was an institute day. Because of the holiday and previously scheduled extended weekend, the district did recognize that some families may have made vacation plans around those days. No decisions on additional days were made at Monday’s meeting, but some previously scheduled nonattendance days could be used for attendance, including Good Friday for Hinsdale Middle School students, May 16 for all students (previously scheduled as an institute day) and June 2 for all schools (previously a grading day). The board would “like-

ly” waive the third make-up day that would be needed for Hinsdale, as permitted by the State Board of Education. Graduation for eighth -graders could also be moved back a day to June 5. Winter doesn’t seem to be leaving anytime soon, and if more school cancellation is needed, the board could re-visit the calendar. “This was an unfortunate situation and we’ve got to get through it,” said Superintendent Renee Schuster.

Villages work to conserve road salt By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – A few months ago, a pile of leftover salt sitting outside the Oak Brook Public Works Department was a “pain” for Mike Hullihan. But with this neverending cold, ice and snow, that salt now looks more like gold. “It was a little bit of an irritation over last summer, but it’s a god send right now,” Oak Brook Public Works Director Hullihan said. Hullihan said the village typically uses 1,500 tons of road salt in the course of a winter but expanded its salt purchasing contract to 1,700 tons for this season. So far this winter, the village already used 1,900 tons. But because of the 800 tons of leftover salt from last season, Hullihan said Oak Brook still has 600 tons remaining. “While we’ve had to go

ing tirelessly in what may seem like a neverending battle with the brutal elements. “We’ve had a lot of these really light, not deep snow, and with the temperatures being what they’ve been we’ve had to use salt more frequently than we’re used to,” Clarendon Hills Public Works Director

Millette said the village usually has to order 200 to 300 tons of salt but started the season with 550 tons on hand. “We’ve already used 1,000 tons this season and we’re not done,” Millette said. “I’ve got 300 on hand so I’m comfortable.” Burr Ridge Public Works Director Paul May said one problem has been the lack of time between snowfalls, resulting in minimal melt off. Public works has had to plow snow higher each time. “Typically what happens is we’ll get a snowfall event, it’ll last for a while, melt back down, we’ll get another one, it will melt back down, and there’s parkway space available for the snow to replace,” May said. “But especially in cul-de-sac areas that becomes a challenge when it doesn’t melt off in between because you might already have a pile 3-feet high at the end of the culde-sac. And there’s another

foot and half of snow to push on top of it.” May said Burr Ridge historically uses about 1,200 tons of road salt each year, and as of Jan. 24, the remaining inventory was 400 tons. Public works has contacted a private supplier to provide 250 additional tons. Like several villages in the area, Burr Ridge Public Works is trying to conserve salt and is advising drivers to be extra cautious. “There’s a very significant demand for it right now, and it’s almost impossible to get additional salt in this area,” May said. Hullihan said drivers should not expect roads to be clear curb to curb. Just because something looks shiny doesn’t mean it’s melted snow, it could be black ice. “People should slow down, leave a little bit early and be part of the solution, not part of the problem,” he said.

Heartfest 2014 to benefit kids with heart defects By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – In September of 2006, Brian and Bridget O’Meara’s son, Liam, was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. While the condition may not be a household name, it essentially meant their son was missing half his heart. “I had no idea until Liam was born how prevalent congenital heart defects are,” said Bridget O’Meara of Clarendon Hills, co-founder of the Mend a Heart Foundation. “They are the most common type of birth defect and it’s like one out of every 100 kids in the U.S. is born with a congenital heart defect.” It was then shortly after that the couple started the Mend a Heart Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation to support all children born with congenital heart defects, as well as research. One of the ways the charity helps is by hosting its annual “Heartfest” fundraiser, which is taking place for the seventh year. The casual event Saturday at The Community House will feature a buffet dinner, cupcake bar, food, drinks, live music, raffles and an auction. “This year, we’re also asking people to get their red on and come to the event dressed in something red,” she said. O’Meara said the foundation would like to raise at least $60,000 from the event, which will go to a few sources. In addition to supporting research projects at a few different heart centers across the coun-

try, the money will go toward working with organizations that do cardiac screenings in high schools to help detect heart conditions in young adolescents. The foundation is also raising money for Camp Odayin in Minnesota, which serves kids with heart conditions and gives them the opportunity to be at a summer camp in a medically supervised environment. “That’s a camp we’ve been really proud to sponsor for the past several years and we always try to sponsor 10 kids who can go away to camp,” O’Meara said. After successfully undergoing three reconstructive heart surgeries, 7-year-old Liam is “doing great,” O’Meara said “He is in first grade and he’s doing really well,” she said. “We still followup twice a year with his cardiologist, but we’ve been very blessed that overall he’s been very healthy and had a smooth course of treatment.”

dciamprone@shawmedia.com WILLOWBROOK – Within hours, the parking lot of the Willowbrook Chick-fil-A transformed into what mirrored a poster from Woodstock as tents and die-hard fans gathered Wednesday for not just a grand opening, but a celebration. “This is actually more [people] than I thought there would initially be,” owner/operator Doug Park said. “Wherever you go there’s die hard Chickfil-A fans and it’s really warming to see them come. I know they’re here for the free food, but I feel the support and to see the enthusiasm it really warms me.” And staying warm was the key for about 25 Chick-fil-A fans who had been outside in the below-freezing temperatures ready to brave the outdoors for a year’s supply of free food. By 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, the 100th person arrived as the group waited together until the clock struck 6 a.m. Thursday when each customer was awarded 52 free Chickfil-A meals for the year. But as the sun had barely rose on Wednesday, it was the Chick-fil-A fanatics and mostly seasoned veterans who were ready for the marathon of patience.

We don’t actually ice fish,” Heide Rewerts of Naperville said. This was Rewerts’ 23rd time waiting in line for a Chick-fil-A grand opening as she was at the Chick-fil-A in Aurora in 2010, and at the grand openings the past few weeks in Elmhurst and Rockford. Growing up in Georgia, though, Rewerts has been eating at Chick-fil-A since 1961. But for her, it’s not just

about the food, it’s a culture among super fans that has created an unspoken camaraderie. “It’s a lot of fun and it’s a lot of the same people,” Rewerts said. “We just turn into friends.” One of those Chick-fil-A friends is Jason Stanley who is on active duty at the Naval Station Great Lakes. This is his third First 100 Chick-fil-A event. He was in Rockford a few weeks ago when wind chills dipped well below zero.

“We bring the warm stuff and we know what to expect,” Stanley said, who was first in line for the Willowbrook location. Stanley said the trick to staying warm is to have a small tent, plenty of layers and the right equipment. He said it’s all worth it. “We get 104 tickets every time we do this because it’s my wife and I, but I have three children so it pays off,” Stanley said. The First 100 began in 2003

in Arizona and since then has been incorporated at each Chick-fil-A grand opening. The new Willowbrook location, which is expected to bring more than 70 new jobs, officially opened at 6 a.m. Thursday. From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, the Willowbrook location also partnered with HCS Family Services to host a food drive. Park relocated to the Chicago area from Fredericksburg, Va., where he was a franchise owner of an ice cream establishment, but said he did live in the area for about six years prior to moving. Park said he’s excited to be back in the Chicago area, and is looking forward to working in the Willowbrook community. “My passion is customer service and just impacting lives with the [quick service restaurant],” Park said. “I feel like it’s an extension of what I want to do and it just fits me well.”

Volunteers transform Nifty Fifty gift shop Nifty Fifty

By DANNY CIAMPRONE dciamprone@shawmedia.com WILLOWBROOK – Before moving to Chateau Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Willowbrook, Dorothy Dinkel and her husband owned what started out as a fix-it shop, and what would later end up as a hobby store. On Jan. 28, Dinkel was behind the counter of a different kind of shop but still felt right at home. “They were looking for volunteers, and I said I would do it,” Dinkel said, who has lived at the Chateau for about three years. “I’ve just really liked meeting different people.” Dinkel is one of three residents who volunteer to work at the Nifty Fifty gift shop on the first floor of the nursing home. The gift shop sells an array of snack items, jewelry, greeting cards and some knick knacks to anyone who lives, works in or visits the Chateau. There is also an ice cream shop right next door.

When that specific manager left the facility, the administration turned the Nifty Fifty over to the activity department, which moved it downstairs to be run

out of the ice cream parlor. “We’ve had a such a great response to that, we thought what better way to get residents involved than to have them actually volunteer at the shop,” Mohr said. Besides selling items at the Nifty Fifty, volunteers also open the shop, stock the

shelves, organize inventory and make sure the shop is in good condition before opening it up again the next day. Since the shop opened, Mohr said she’s seen a change in not just the volunteers, but in the residents who visit the shop. “I would say we have more residents that come down on a regular basis and I believe they come down so they can spend that time with the volunteers,” she said. “It’s a great social environment and I think it also allows them to interact with more visitors that are coming through the facility.” The Nifty Fifty has been open in the new space downstairs for about two months, and prior to that, it was open

for about a year with residents volunteering. Mohr said volunteers will work usually two to four hours, but with staggered shifts. Profits from the store also go directly to the resident activity program. In addition to the Nifty Fifty, the 150-bed Chateau facility also offers three distinct living areas, short-term rehab and long-term care. To further help residents socialize, the Chateau also has a new media room and Internet cafe. “It makes it much more homelike and really allows them to get off of the units and socialize with residents from other units in those rooms,” she said. Mohr said for those who work at the Nifty Fifty, it’s not only a chance to socialize, but it’s a chance for them to take satisfaction in knowing they’re contributing and giving back to the facility. “What do you like best about working at the Nifty Fifty?” Dinkel was asked. “Taking the money,” she said with a laugh.

DARIEN – A Westmont man allegedly pretended to purchase a bottle of water before grabbing money from the register at two Darien gas stations last week, according to a Darien Police D e p a r t m e n t Antonio news release. Castillo Antonio Castillo, 39, 1136 Florence Ave., was charged Feb. 5 with two counts of felony robbery. About 11:40 p.m. Feb. 4, Darien police responded to the Circle K Shell gas station, at 8975 Lemont Road, for a report of a robbery. The clerk reported a male entered the gas station, used the washroom and then brought a bottle of water to the counter. The offender then grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash from the register and fled in a vehicle southbound on Lemont Road, according to the release. No injuries to the clerk

were reported. Then about 2:40 a.m. Feb. 5, Darien police responded to the Shell gas station located at 8226 Cass Ave. for a robbery. The offender brought a bottle of water to the counter, then grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash from the register and fled south on Cass Avenue to southbound Interstate 55. The clerk received a minor injury to his finger when the register was opened, but no medical attention was required, according to the release. At 2:54 a.m. Feb. 5, an Illinois State Police trooper on patrol located the vehicle and subject matching the description of the offender in the two Darien robberies parked at a Shell gas station, at Route 53 and I-55 in Bolingbrook. Castillo was taken into custody with assistance of Bolingbrook and Darien police. After being transported to DuPage County Jail for a physical line-up, both clerks from the Darien gas stations positively identified Castillo as the offender, according to the release.

In libraries and bookstores, guiding the reader COMMUNITY to the next book is called VOICE Readers’ Advisory. It’s part Karen Kleckner art, part passion and part alchemy. Alert: Sidewalks are awful I would like to comment on the sidewalks south of 55th Street in Westmont. There have been other terrible years in the past, but this year, it’s just awful. The people and the businesses do not clean the sidewalks and there’s a lot of foot traffic. I just read in Suburban Life this week about the Downers Grove disposal program for drugs, which is wonderful. I just want people to be aware of the fact that, and I am a Downers Grove residence, for years at the Lisle police station, you’ve been able to walk in and put your drugs in a box without making an appointment and sometimes that may be more convenient. So anyhow, I just want everybody to know about it. I think it’s wonderful Downers Grove is finally offering this program. But I think it would be easier for a lot of people if they don’t have to make an appointment, they can just drop their drugs off, which I’ve been doing for years.

OAK BROOK – Half-day kindergarten has been offered at Brook Forest Elementary School since the building opened in 1971, but that’s going to change starting in the 2014-15 school year. On Jan. 30, the District 53 Board of Education voted unanimously to move forward with the plan to offer full-day kindergarten at Brook Forest. Full-day kindergarten was previously proposed to the board in 1997 but was denied based on cost. Then in 1998, extended day was added with three-hour sessions but was later reduced in 2008. School Board President Alan Hanzlik said the district started discussing the notion of implementing full-day kindergarten about a year ago, and then started researching it and gaining perspective about five months ago. “We received quite a bit of input from parents and it was all favorable,” Hanzlik said. Hanzlik said all the research conducted by District 53 pointed to favorable signs for implementing a full-day schedule. Some of the benefits included students having a seamless transition to first grade, greater academic achievement in later grades, faster gains of literacy and enhanced social, emotional and behavioral development. The research also showed that children in full-day kindergarten programs receive 40 percent to 50 percent more instruction than children enrolled in half-day kindergarten. Children in full-day also spend 30 percent more time on reading instruction and 46 percent more time on mathematics. The biggest factors, though, are space and cost. “We took a look to make sure we could accommodate a full-day space-wise because we had an increase in enrollment this year, so we completed that study, and we will end up re-purposing a room to allow that,” Hanzlik said. “We went through the finances and then we met with the administration and parents.” Hanzlik said there is a

Hanzlik said the board agreed on a $2,000 fee per child, which comes out to about $12 a day for parents that want to do full-day kindergarten. District 180 Superintendent Thomas Schneider said full-day kindergarten has been offered in the district for about four years with “tremendous success.” “It’s of course offered as an option, but I think we’ve only had one kid in the years not go to a full day, so I think most schools do it as an option basis,” Schneider said. Schneider said because of budget issues a few years ago, the district had to eliminate fullday kindergarten before a referendum was passed. “One of the things that I think led to community support of the referendum was the fact that full-day kindergarten was going to be brought back into the community,” Schneider said. “I think it was one of those things that of all the cuts we had to make, that was the one parents were most upset with.” District 181 doesn’t offer fullday kindergarten, but Superintendent Renee Schuster said the district has been talking about it and recently conducted a parent survey to gain input. “It was one of those items that some people were strongly in favor of, and some people were strongly against it, so it’s something under consideration,” Schuster said. Schuster said the district will be discussing full-day kindergarten again in the near future as part of the district’s strategic planning.

To the Editor: I recently introduced Senate Bill 2790 to give Illinois families and businesses nearly $450 million in Illinois sales tax relief on gasoline. Illinois is one of seven states with a sales tax on gasoline in addition to a per gallon tax. This is a tax on a tax and terrible fiscal policy. Even worse, the gasoline sales tax collected doesn’t even go to support roads, it goes to the state’s General Revenue Fund. My plan calls for reducing the sales tax on gasoline. It saves Illinois families and businesses hundreds of dollars per year. After Gov. Pat Quinn and the Democrats raised income taxes 67 percent, Illinois residents deserve some relief. Part of the remaining sales tax will be dedicated toward a program to begin repairing our failing roads and bridges. The American Society of

Metra riders voice complaints at open forum By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com NAPERVILLE – DuPage County Metra riders expressed skepticism Monday night that weather is entirely to blame for long waits, delays, crowded platforms and other recent issues with the rail service. More than 50 users of the mass transit service voiced complaints with Metra Executive Director Don Orseno and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Suburban Services Director Pat Casler during a question-and-answer session Monday at Naperville City Hall. It was hosted by State Reps. Ron Sandack and Darlene Senger. “When is Metra going to stop using weather as an excuse?” Naperville resident Roy Ozol asked. “This morning, my train was 15 minutes late, the person who was on the train before me, her train was 35 minutes late.” Ozol also asked why Mon-

day night’s meeting was not announced over the Metra’s PA system. “If the purpose of this meeting was communication, why wasn’t it announced on the trains or the train station?” he said. Orseno, recently named full director following a period as interim director, expressed sympathy with riders and said the rail service is looking to improve its performance. “We’re going to take every suggestion and every comment that you have, and we are going to truly work on it,” he said. Lisle rider Dan Donnelly said he’s used the train for 17 years, and said the service has become less consistent and more problem-prone in recent years. “I’m afraid that Metra is basically hiding this problem behind the bad weather,” he said. “Its performance during the bad weather was abys-

mal. But you know what, we can get past that. The problem is that Metra’s performance over the last several years has been abysmal. Whether it’s the spring, the summer or the fall, we have a switch problem, we have a mechanical problem, we have a freight train problem. It’s every single problem. Ten minutes late is the new normal.” Casler replied, saying the 37-year on-time performance average was 94.5 percent, which was the same number last year. She said the number this past September and October was 97 percent. On-time is defined as arriving within 5 minutes of schedule. Metra riders in attendance had a hard time believing the figures, and expressed further frustration with what they described as unpredictable and late arrival times. “I think the thing that’s most frustrating for me is the scheduling and the uncertain-

ty, the fact that you just don’t know when to show up for a train,” Naperville resident Kevin Madden said. Orseno said the rail line is in the process of adding a “real time train tracker” so that riders can see exactly when their train is scheduled to arrive. He said that will likely be in place by summer. Before taking questions, Orseno detailed the wide spectrum of challenges caused by extreme cold and repeated snowfall. Weekly tasks that typically take 10 minutes, like replacing trains’ brake shoes, can take up to an hour because of ice. Most of his remarks focused on the effort to keep rail switches free of snow and unfrozen. Many switches have natural gas burners that keep a flame to the switch, melting ice and snow. But he said when temperatures hover around zero for several days in a row, that is often not enough. There

is also the problem caused by snow buildup on the tracks. “Every time we clean the switches out, the trains are coming through and putting more snow in the switches, which renders them inoperable,” he said. When a faulty switch causes a delay, there is a cascading effect on all subsequent trains. “You could have one switch failure and have 30, 40, 50 delays,” he said. Casler mentioned other long-term issues, including inadequate funding for capital purchases like spare train cars. “On the shorter-term basis, we have a lot of mechanical problems with locomotives, in May especially,” she said, adding that there have been improvements. Since then, diagnostic tests on train fuel systems led to improvements that have reduced those mechanical problems, she said.

Thai Pot stirs affection for traditional cuisine DOWNERS GROVE – Thai fare has become more commonplace over the years, and, like many other adopted cuisines, often more Americanized. Breading, cream, sugary sauces and less traditional spices frequently are incorporated. Thai Pot seems to resist that temptation, offering authentic flavors and food, to good result. During my first visit to the restaurant, I stopped by for lunch. Tucked into a strip mall in Downers Grove, the storefront eatery has a bright, appealingly decorated interior. The full menu is not available midday, when the restaurant focuses on a selection of weekday lunch specials, which are fairly diverse and very well priced. For just under $8, you get soup, the appetizer of the day and a well-portioned entree. The meal started with a simple yet delicious chicken and jasmine rice soup. It reminded me of my mom’s best chicken noodle, but the jasmine and a smattering of other Thai spices gave it an extra layer of savory that really set it apart. All the components were cooked well, and the broth had an almost buttery texture. The aromatic fish sauce and spices in the red curry with tofu, which usually are muted by lots of coconut sauce, wafted my way as the server approached the table. The emphasis was on the spicy chili sauce in the curry, a dish overflowing with veggies and tofu. The tofu itself melted in my

mouth. It was boiled, not fried, giving it an eggy texture. After the satisfying lunch, I was curious to check out the full menu, and followed up another day with a dinner visit. I started with an order of Shrimp Cigars – admittedly chosen because of the great name. They were big plump shrimp, tail-on, alongside Thai basil and a bit of onion, all wrapped and fried in a wonton wrapper. The visual was a great one, and the presentation allowed the shrimp to stay the star. My entree of spicy basil leaves with chicken had a great blend of flavors, particularly the sauce. It contained just enough basil to add a nice punch. I would have liked even more of the gravy, simply because it was so good. Thai Pot’s greatest strength is its commitment to authenticity. Thai is one of my favorite cuisines – I love the Americanized versions just as much as I love the ones straight from the recipes of Thai grandmothers – and Thai Pot managed to throw in a couple flavors I hadn’t experienced before. Diners who would like to push their boundaries a bit, or those who already relish the more traditional flavors, will want to find out what’s cooking at Thai Pot.

But for as good as the team has done this season, the coach said his team needs to take that final step if it wants to make some noise come playoff time. “We are really close to being really good,” Moore said following Tuesday’s 63-53 loss to Morton, which dropped the Hornets to third in the West Suburban Gold while Morton took over sole possession of second place in the conference. “We need the boys to remain focused on the details and buy into the little things that are sometimes difficult for high schoolers to buy into. I think we have enough talent to make a nice playoff run, it’s now just a matter of attention to details and execution.” After a disappointing 5-18 campaign in 2012-13, it would have been easy to overlook the Hornets heading into the season. But Moore has aided the development of the underclassmen, and his new offensive scheme sees several players contribute to the scoring each game. “I think our balance has worked in our favor this season,” Moore said. “It gives us the ability to run out both big and small lineups knowing that we can get scoring production no matter who is on the court.” With five games left in the season, the Hornets (14-8, 5-4) are trending in the right direction, despite Tuesday’s loss to a Morton team that is expected to compete for postseason titles. Tuesday’s game was a backand-forth affair between the Hornets and Mustangs. The teams went back-and-forth for three-plus quarters, exchanging the lead seven times.

Ultimately, Morton’s shooters proved too much for the Hornets’ defense, as four consecutive fourth-quarter 3-pointers by the Mustangs turned a one-point Hinsdale South lead into a double digit deficit. Larry Motuzis scored eight points in the first quarter to power the Hornets to a 17-11 lead after eight minutes. Morton then stormed back to tie the game at 25-25 heading into halftime. Morton began the third quarter with a 6-0 run before Hinsdale South clawed back and took a 42-41 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Hinsdale Central senior wrestler won the Lyons Township regional at 145 pounds to take the first step in his chase to win a state title. Last year, Edmond was second place in Class 3A at 138 pounds and is expecting more this time around. “My goal is not to win regional, my goal is to win state,” Edmond said. “This is just a step towards my goal.” Edmond pinned his first two opponents before winning the final by injury default. He has a 41-1 record and is in posi-

tion to go for the state title this year. What does Edmond think the likelihood of winning is? “ I t ’ s v e r y Juwan high,” he said Edmond without hesitation. “I feel like the only person that can beat me is myself as of right now.” The Red Devils have another wrestler with a high likelihood of winning state. Hornet senior Nick Perisin won the regional title at 126. Justin Maslow took second at 145 to give South three wrestlers at the sectional. Maslow was fifth in the state last winter. The Hornets had five wrestlers make it to the crucial third place matches that decide who joins the finalists at sectionals, but all five lost. In the team standings South was fourth with 115 points. HINSDALE – Matt Rafferty and his Hinsdale Central basketball teammates found their fifth gear. Hosting Metea Valley in a nonconference game on Feb. 7, the Red Devils blew open a close game in the second half and won, 56-40. Rafferty scored 20 points, including 12 during a 20-4 Central run after the Mustangs had crept to within 2624, and almost out-rebounded the opposition as the Red Devils snapped Metea Valley’s five-game winning streak while pushing their own consecutive win total to three. In addition to the 20-point performance, the 6-foot-7 Rafferty recorded 18 rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks, as Central improved to 16-6 overall. The Red Devils held a comfortable 10-point advantage in the second quarter, but Metea Valley made it a one-possession game midway through the third quarter. Hinsdale Central then went on its big run to put the game out of reach. Ian Bunting and Chase Hamilton scored nine points each for the Red Devils. Bunting scored five points during the decisive run while Hamilton added a 3-pointer. The win helped Hinsdale Central maintain momentum as it heads into perhaps the biggest stretch of games this season. The Red Devils hit the road for a pair of West Suburban Silver games this weekend. First up is a tilt against Proviso West (6 p.m. Friday) before a matinee against rival Lyons Township at 5 p.m. Saturday. Central returns home for a key game against York at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. York remains undefeated in the Silver at 9-0 while Central is one game back in the loss column at 7-1 heading into the weekend.

Keep it short and silly! Part of the charm of this form is that it is short, sweet and to the point. Each line should have between four to six syllables — use seven only if you have to. be creative. The classic form uses a color on the second line, but you don’t have to. Instead of a color, you can use another descriptive word on that line — sight, sound, taste and feeling all work in place of a color. Rhyme it. Rhyming this poem keeps it feeling light, fresh and musical.
