Celebrating those who give back The Bureau County Republican and Putnam County Record constantly learn of people in our two great counties who make a difference in the lives of other residents and the communities in which they live. They are stories of people who unselfishly give of their time, their talents, even their hardearned money to make life better for others, and the most wonderful part of that scenario ... they do so without asking for anything in return.

While our newspapers often publish stories about the people who make Bureau and Putnam counties special, we have created a

‘Hometown Heroes’ looks at people who make our communities better new and extraordinary section, which you are holding in your hands right now — “Hometown Heroes.” I am so excited to share this with you. This section includes area people who are making Bureau/Putnam counties a better place to live, work and play.

Like myself, I know you will be touched by the people we call our “Hometown Heroes.”

“Hometown Heroes” includes a moving and inspirational glimpse about your friends and neighbors and what they do to help others. It also includes

the details about the positive results their tireless work has had on Bureau/Putnam counties.

Included in “Hometown Heroes,” you will read of people of all ages — the young, the middle-aged and the seniors who never think about getting paid for their kindness. We’ve given you a glimpse into the lives of people you already know along with some new acquaintances, whose hearts and actions have clearly touched others.

Some of the folks you’ll recognize, while

others we’ll be introducing to you for the first time. Some will be youngsters, teenagers, while others will have been around for decades. But they have something in common: Making our corner of Illinois a better place.

Throughout my journalism career, I’ve had the opportunity to be part of many, many special sections produced by this newspaper, however, I have to say I am so delighted to present “Hometown Heroes” to you, our readers and advertisers.

This is a unique section never before been pub-

lished in this area, and I guarantee it will become a keepsake edition yearafter-year.

Terri I also Simon believe “Hometown Heroes” will be the type of publication that will cause your heart to do a bit of a flip-flop. These folks will not only touch you, but their actions will hopefully influence others to become a “Hometown Hero” in years to come.

Ann Hunter Town of residence: Arlington.

How long have you lived there: 48 years in April.

Family: Eight children, John, Joe, Jane, Julie, Jennifer, June, Jeanette and Jessica.

What organization(s) do you volunteer for: Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) religion education, Altar and Rosary Society at St. Patrick’s Church, has been the organist at St. Patrick’s Church for 40 years, cares for the church needs for the pastors, work on most committees for church fundraising events.

How long have you served the organization(s): CCD for 40 years and the Altar and Rosary Society for 35 years.

Why is volunteerism so important to you: I have the need to keep things going. If people see one person doing something, they will also feel the need to help out. Also, if you let things slide, it’s hard to get them back.

What do you enjoy about your community: We all get along and help out when it’s needed.

How would you encourage others to get involved in volunteering: Don’t be afraid to come forward and ask to do something.

How did you get involved with volunteering: When my children started school, I began helping out at the schools.

As my kids got older, I was able to do more things.

When someone asked for my help, I was there.

Why do you volunteer: I do things because there’s a need. If I don’t do it, it won’t get done. I also have

my good health, and as long as God gives me that, I can keep going.

How does volunteering make you feel: Like I’m doing good things for my community. I like to help out.

What gaps do you see in your organizations that need to be filled: There really are no gaps.

If one person doesn’t do something, there is always someone who will step up and take over the duty.

What would people be surprised to know about you: I enjoy Dixieland jazz, and I like to dance the polka.

What are your hobbies: I have all kinds of hobbies. I enjoy watching my grandchildren, sewing and cooking.

Additional comments: Everyone should volunteer. They should set aside time to help people out.

How long have you lived there: All my life.

What organization(s) do you volunteer for: Assist with the LaMoille Lions Club, on the LaMoille Ambulance Service, library board, on the committee for Buffalo Days, and in the past I’ve been involved in athletic boosters and the LYP Group. If they ask me, I do it.

How long have you served the organization(s): 27 years with the LaMoille Ambulance Service and 15 years with the LaMoille Lions Club.

Why is volunteerism so important to you: Being in a small community — the only way to keep it going is volunteering your time.

What do you enjoy about your community: You can leave your doors unlocked, and you always know who your neighbors are.

How would you encourage others to get involved in volunteering: Just stepup and volunteer. It’s enjoyable, and you get to meet a lot of people. Also, a lot of colleges are now looking at what you’ve done, as far as, community service, so it’s a great opportunity to show what you can do for your community. Pick something you like and go for it.

How did you get involved with volunteering: Beryl Becker and Bernie Binges.

They were looking for more EMTs, and they talked me into taking my first course.

Why do you volunteer: I like helping people. If we didn’t volunteer on the ambulance service, Prince-

How does volunteering make you feel: Good, complete, rewarding.

What gaps do you see in your organizations that need to be filled: The younger volunteers need to commit.

What would people be surprised to know about you: That I don’t cook like my mother, and I have the fastest scissors on the ambulance.

What are your hobbies: I like to run the tractor and babysit my granddaughter.

Additional comments: If anyone needs convincing to be an EMT, come see me.

I’ll convince you because one of these days I’ll retire.

Also, I’m very proud to see my sons and daughter follow my footsteps as an EMT.

Betty Johnson Town of residence: McNabb.

How long have you lived there: Almost my entire life.

Family: Three sons, Brandon, Bruce and Brian; and a daughter, Lisa.

What organization(s) do you volunteer for: Putnam County Rotary, Red Cross Blood Drive, New Hope Parish Church-McNabb Methodist and the Backpack Ministry.

What activities do you do for the organization(s): Rotary: poinsettias, dictionaries for third-graders and other community activities. Church: Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and the blood drives.

How long have you served the organization(s): For a real long time. At my age, you don’t count.

Why is volunteerism so important to you: When we were in college, one of the things they suggested was be involved in the community. We had a small class at the University of Illinois then, being the fourth class in the nursing program.

They felt we should be out there. It was started when we were young.

I never got out of the habit where ever I was. I wanted to help others. I care about people.

What do you enjoy about your community: You know everyone because it is a small town. It feels good to give back to others.

How would you encourage others to get involved in volunteer-

ing: Just give it a try. It’s a great feeling.

How did you get involved with volunteering: Our hospital came to us after Katrina and said if anybody wants to go, you can; we will support you. They covered our shifts. I went for three weeks.

What gaps do you see in your organization that need to be filled: In the Backpack Ministry, we ask Scouts and the Interact Club to help sometimes. It is good to see that they are even in the junior high. I think it’s good for the kids to learn.

What are your hobbies: I’m awful busy just doing what I do.

Additional comments: I feel fortunate to have grown up in a small community.

What organization(s) do you volunteer for: Spring Valley Booster Club, March of Dimes, United Way Junior Achievement, and I’m a volunteer in Frank Mautino’s office.

How long have you served the organization(s): Been with the SV Booster Club for five years, helped out with March of Dimes for about five years, assisted with the United Way Junior Achievement for three years and have been helping in Frank Mautino’s Office for about seven years.

What do you enjoy about your community: The small town feel.

How would you encourage others to get involved

in volunteering: Come to a SV Boosters meeting. We always need help — no matter how big or small.

How did you get involved with volunteering: I started helping my mom out in Frank Mautino’s office in high school, and throughout the years people have asked

me to join other organizations.

Why do you volunteer: Because I like to help people and plan events in the community. It gives people something to do.

How does volunteering make you feel: It makes me feel great. One year, a little girl came up to me after an Easter egg hunt I had helped out with, and she told me how much fun she had. It was just a really great feeling, and it made it worth the time.

What gaps do you see in your organizations that need to be filled: We always need more volunteers.

What would people be surprised to know about you: I have 12 tattoos — they are all hidden. Also, I’m into guns.

What are your hobbies: Shotguns, scrapbooking, interior design and cooking.

What organization(s) do you volunteer for: Gold Coat at Perry Memorial Hospital and Mobile Meal driver.

What activities do you

do for the organization(s): Gold Coat: I deliver mail to all offices in the hospital twice a day, deliver supplies and lab samples from offices and discharge patients. Mobile Meals: I deliver meals to shut-ins for Mobile Meals.

How long have you served the organization(s): It will be 15 years in September, volunteering four hours one day a week.

Why is volunteerism so important to you: I know I am helping others through

What do you enjoy about your community: It’s friendly, small town to raise a family and you know a lot of people.

Why do you volunteer: To learn new skills, make new friends, enjoy the satisfaction of helping others, and I like to be around people.

How long have you lived there: 26 years.

Family: Husband, Mickel; children, Brandon, Bethany, Aaron, Rusty and Keegan; grandchild, Lillie Mae. Also, a dog, Sydney; cats, Backwards Charlie and Curly Jo; Ball Python, Keesh; and a turtle, Girlie.

What organization(s) do you volunteer for: Special Olympics Illinois, Bureau Valley Junior Football League, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts.

What activities do you do for the organization(s): Special Olympics Illinois: I coach five sports — I am certified in nine sports; Bureau Valley Junior Football League: secretary; Boy Scouts: help when necessary; Cub Scouts: den leader; Girl Scouts: I was a troop leader, trainer and worked for a short time at the office.

How long have you been involved in the organization(s): Special Olympics Illinois — 22 years as parent, 8 years as a coach; Bureau Valley Junior Football League — 6 years; Boy Scouts — 10 years; Cub Scouts — 15 years at a parent, 7 years as den leader; Girl Scouts — 10 years.

How did you get involved with volunteering: One word — KIDS. I can’t let the kids down; if no one steps up to lead/ coach, I do. It’s a curse; most of these organizations know I can’t say no to the kids.

Why do you volunteer: I love seeing the smiling faces on the children/ adults’ faces that I work with. A smile from them is great medicine.

How does volunteering make you feel: Awesome!

What gaps do you see in your organization that need to be filled: Each organization I have been with needs more volunteers, young and old.

Why is volunteerism so important to you: If I can make one child smile today by volunteering, life is worth living.

What do you enjoy about your community: The small town atmosphere. Many of my neighbors will jump in to help you out when you get in a jam and need a hand.

How would you encourage others to get involved in volunteering: It is so rewarding. Even if you can only help for a few hours at an event, you will feel great about yourself. I have five children and one grandchild. I am a very busy person, but I volunteer at something every week. Whether it’s leadership, coaching or just plain lending a hand, I try to keep myself busy making others feel good about themselves.

What would people be surprised to know about you: I was shy as a child. I didn’t like attention at all.

Let me fade into the trees.

Now as an adult, I love hugs. Getting a hug from an athlete that has just won a GOLD medal is priceless. It brings me to tears every time.

What are your hobbies: Photography — football and wildlife are my favorite subjects to shoot.

Painting, collecting many different things and bird watching. I love going to zoos and Special Olympics events.

Marilyn Burkman Town of residence: Rural Bureau.

How long have you lived there: 51 years.

Age: 71.

Family: Widow (lost my husband, Dennis, 7 years ago). Daughter and son-inlaw, Colleen and Mike Carlson; son, Keith, and daughter-in-law, Paula Burkman; four grandchildren, Emily, Nathan and Katie Burkman, and Jessica Carlson.

What organization(s) do you volunteer for: First Congregational Church of Bureau, Leepertown Public Library Board, 4-H and Bureau County Home and Community Education Association.

What activities do you do for the organization(s): Been a member of First Congregational Church of Bureau for 51 years.

Started helping with Sunday School when our children started Sunday School. After a few years, I was teaching a class,

and I’m still teaching Sunday School. Been Sunday School treasurer for many years. I have been in charge of Vacation Bible School for many years and also teach.

I have been chairman and co-chairman of Women’s Fellowship many times and work with all our projects (suppers, funeral lunches, rugs, bazaar items, etc.) I have been church clerk for 20-plus years.

We have a Kids Klub at our church which I have helped with for 12 years. I attend Kids Klub Camp as a helper the end of June, and also my grandchildren have attended and are now helpers.

When our children attended Leepertown Grade School in Bureau, I was active in the Parents Club and volunteered at the school. My husband served on the school board.

I have been Leepertown Township’s clerk for more than 30 years.

When our children were in 4-H, I helped with many

different programs. I still help with the 4-H Fair as the Superintendent of Foods every years. Our grandchildren are now in 4-H and keep Grandma involved. We have always been a supporter of the 4-H program.

I have been a member of the Bureau County Home and Community Education Association, N.W. Selby Unit, for more than 25 years. Serving my unit as president and been on the County HCE Board several times where I’m currently county treasurer. We also work with the 4-H and have had the food stand at the 4-H Fair where I put in many hours. Helped with the Pie Contest during Pork Days many years.

At out church, we also have a Relay for Life cancer team which my family is very involved with.

Why is volunteerism so important to you: I feel God has been good to me and my family, and to be a part of your church, school,

community is a way of showing his love.

What do you enjoy about your community: I have always enjoyed working with children, whether through the school or church.

How would you encourage others to get involved in volunteering: There are volunteers needed in so many different ways in every community and it’s a way of making new friends and feeling good about helping others.

How did you get involved with volunteering: I guess I started volunteering when my children were in school and 4-H and never stopped.

Why do you volunteer: I have made many good friends through volunteering, and it makes you feel good to be helping others.

What are your hobbies: Attending my grandchildren’s activities. I enjoy baking, cooking and spending time with my family and friends.

How long I have lived here: 4 years.

Age: 11.

Family: Renne, Erick, Danicka and Daelyn Benavidez and other family.

What organizations do you volunteer for: Western Bureau County Food Pantry.

What do you do for the organization: Stock shelves, take food to cars and anything else.

How long have you served the organization: 4 years.

How did you get involved volunteering: By seeing someone else work there.

Why do you volunteer: I don’t like seeing people sad, so I try to help out as much as possible.

that could be done at the Western Bureau County Food Pantry: No. Why is volunteerism important to you: It’s important because I feel the need to help people in need.

What do you enjoy about your community: I enjoy everyone’s happiness even in times of hardships.

What would people be surprised to know about you: That I’m very lazy at home.

Hobbies: Helping at the food pantry, reading and band.

Additional comments: Without Mary and Cleo Lanham (food pantry directors), I would not be here today, so without them I would not have had such a great couple of years with them. Thanks to them.

Germaine Breitbach Town of residence: Neponset.

Family: Son, David, of Princeton.

How do you help in your community: I’ve helped out with senior citizens over the years and am still doing that though, I’m a senior citizen now myself. I make sure they get their meals and medications. I take them for their treatments.

I check on them and visit with them.

How did you get started in your volunteering with seniors: My husband got sick, and a beautician friend gave me my haircuts and perms. Then when she got sick, I paid her back by helping her. When she passed away, I started taking care of another lady, then a man, and another lady.

Why do you take the time to do this: I grew up like that. It’s something my folks taught me, to always help out your neighbors.

My mom did a lot of free babysitting.

Why is it important to volunteer: It’s a good thing to do, to help out others, and I hope that when I’m the one who needs help, that someone is there for me.

In what other ways have you volunteered in your community: I drove the school bus for Neponset for 43 years, which was my job, but I also did a lot of volunteer stuff at the school. I’ve taken care of the Neponset Community Building for years, since it was built. I get paid for some of it, but I do other things there that need to be done.

What other organizations are you involved in: I’ve been a part of the Neponset

Pride organization since it was formed. Neponset Pride does a lot for the betterment of the community. We’ve spruced up the downtown during the summer and brought Christmas baskets for shut-ins. We sponsor bloodmobiles and help out others with their projects in town.

How does it make you feel to volunteer: It keeps me young. As long as I feel good, why not?

How would you encourage others to get involved in their community: It would be nice for younger people to get involved in Neponset Pride. You can always use more volunteers.

What do you like about your community: I like the small town feeling. People are friendly, and when you need help, there’s someone there to help you.

What would people be surprised to know about you: Everyone pretty much knows everything there is

to know about me. They know I love animals, and I like my friends. They know

What kinds of things do you do for the church: Eucharistic minister of communion; prayer chain; Knights of Columbus; and liaison for our sister parish and school in LaMontagne, Haiti.

How long have you served the church in this

way: Since about 1986, both in Wyanet and Princeton.

Did you need special training to do this service, as a Eucharistic minister of communion: We have to go through in-service training to prepare us on how to administer and respectfully bring communion to the homebound, to nursing homes and hospitals.

Being aware of the person’s health and condition must be respected.

How did you decide to do this service for others: Always with prayer!

The pastor at St. Louis said he needed Eucharis-

tic ministers to help him, and I said yes! You always receive so much more back from those you serve when taking holy communion to the sick and the shut-ins.

Are those people all in Wyanet, or do you sometimes go to nursing homes and other towns to do this: Mostly in Wyanet, but I do help at the nursing homes in Princeton.

Why do you think this is an important thing to do: God calls us all to be disciples and to help one another in His name.

How does volunteering make you feel: Humble and

blessed.

What gaps or areas of service do you see in your organization/church that need to be filled: Of course, the more helpers and volunteers the “lighter the load.” We all have a gift to give.

What would people be surprised to know about you: That I helped our sister parish in Haiti along with assisting on the medical team missions for 12 years, starting in 1989.

What are your hobbies: Railroading, model trains, amateur radio, reading any type of books and traveling with family.

What organization(s) do you volunteer for: Currently I am serving as a director of the Tiskilwa Historical Society. Have volunteered for the Wyanet Historical Society and recently rejoined the Bureau/Putnam Crimestoppers. Mason Cemetery Association.

What activities do you do for the organization(s): Staff both of the Tiskilwa and Wyanet historical societies. Made mannequins for both museums’ military uniforms. At Tiskilwa, I assist in the maintenance of the museum. Keep the outside sign updated with the current activities that are happening in the museum.

For the Mason Cemetery, I volunteer the mowing, trimming and upkeep. The caretaking requires four hours each time the cemetery needs mowed twice a month. Also mark out the graves for burial. The gas is donated by us, and the maintenance of the lawn mowers is provided by recent burials for the plots.

How long have you served the organization(s): Tiskilwa Historical Society for four years. Wyanet Historical Society one year. Crimestoppers one month. I had dropped out for a few years. But had served as president for the Crimestoppers for about four years. Mason Cemetery 20 years.

Why is volunteerism so important to you: As a kid

growing up in Wyanet, I watched my grandfather be involved with the Wyanet Fire Department.

He served many years on this department. He also was a superintendent of the poultry department at the Bureau County Fair for many years. He always said you have to have something to believe in and get involved. But do not be a standby; do for the good of the community. I believed in his good advice. If you take the time to join an organization, then get involved and help with the cause.

What do you enjoy about your community: Everything. Friendly people, great place to raise children.

How would you encourage others to get involved in volunteerism: This is a good question. First. I believe a person needs motivation. Second, desire. Third, invite a friend to come to a meeting and see if this might be suited for them to become a volunteer.

How did you get involved with volunteering: A friend asked me to join the Tiskilwa Lions Club. I did and made club president over the years.

Why do you volunteer: I have asked myself this question many times. Mostly I enjoy the time spent with people helping other people.

How does volunteering make you feel: Have you ever had a person(s) come up to you and say: THANK YOU! There are a lot of thank yous out there.

Recently I was staffing the Tiskilwa Historical Society. A lady came into the museum doing research on her family. Her mother was a long-time member of the Methodist Church. The former Methodist Church is now the home of the THS. She knew her mother or family had donated an item to the museum. We located the item, and if you can picture the joy on the lady’s face. It makes everything worthwhile, and makes you feel humbled.

Additional comments: Over the past 53 years, I have been involved with many organizations. To name a few: Tiskilwa Improvement Association, Tiskilwa Fire Department, P.T.A, Tiskilwa High School Booster Club, Neighborhood Watch Program, Tiskilwa Lions Club, host family for overseas children — one from Australia, two from Italy. Why is volunteerism so important to you: It is important to give back to the people of the community that you come from because we are the people who need to take care of each other and support one another. Sponsoring Interact is important to teach students the value of giving back to their community.

What do you enjoy about your community: The small town atmosphere of knowing your neighbors and knowing that we have the same belief in hard work and similar values.

How would you encourage others to get involved in volunteering: By joining one of the service clubs in the county or searching out opportunities; no one will turn away free help. For students, listen to the daily

announcements and come to the Interact Club meetings.

How did you get involved with volunteering: My family has always volunteered their time. Whether it was coaching Little League sports or being pack leaders and den leaders for Cub Scouts, my parents were always giving with their time. And later during high school going with my Grandpa Bill to help at the area Special Olympics. I was also involved with community service clubs while in high school.

Why do you volunteer: I volunteer to give back to my community and to support all of the people who make this county a great place to live and grow up.

How long have you lived there: 40 years in town and 13 in the country.

Age: 73.

Family: Husband, Gerald; children, Steve Linker, David Linker and Vickie Bickett; and five grandchildren, Jason, Kristen, Blair and Trevor Bickett, and Damion Estes.

What organization(s) do you volunteer for: Church, plus every week I do something for someone. I am always cooking, and I share my food with friends and elderly. I also volunteer with the Bureau Valley Antique Club and its “Spring Fling” at the Harold Steele farm.

Years ago, I volunteered for the Malden Train and Grain Days.

What activities do you do for the organization(s): Help with all the functions such as the chicken/biscuit supper, prepare desserts, cook barbecue for the ice cream social and turkey, dressing and desserts for the Harvest Dinner.

How long have you served the organization(s): About 15 years. I became a caregiver to many elderly ladies.

I usually would take something special along, and they would say, “And what do we have today?” I loved them all. It was the most rewarding job I ever had. It is a joy to see the happiness you give to others.

Why is volunteerism so important to you: God expects us to help one another and to be there for people in need, even if it is just listening to someone who needs a listener or helping mop the floor.

What do you enjoy about your community: In my community, I am very

thankful for all the devoted volunteers we have in our EMTs and first responders.

They are all a great bunch of guys and are there immediately.

How would you encourage others to get involved in volunteering: It is one of the most rewarding jobs you will ever have. Share and care. It is a great blessing.

How did you get involved with volunteering: When I think back at my life, it all began when I was 16. We had a neighbor lady who was sickly, and I went every two weeks for about two years to wash and set her hair. I’ve also always helped out at my church, first the Kasbeer Community. For 14 years, I, along with good friends, headed up the hospitality committee at the Princeton Bible Church, and now I’m at Malden Methodist Church.

Church has been my life.

Why do you volunteer: I just love helping others. The joy you receive is a joyous

blessing. The joy you give to others is worth it all.

How does volunteering make you feel: Joyful. A short time ago I was visiting with a local missionary.

He asked how I was doing.

I keep myself busy doing things for others, and it makes me feel good. He said, “Well, Joyce, that fits your name: Jesus first, Others second, You third ... J-O-Y. Just like Joyce.”

What gaps do you see in your organization that need to be filled: I’d like to see the community come and check out our church in Malden. Support your hometown. And I’d like to see a community senior gathering once a month — a potluck, bingo and more.

What would people be surprised to know about you: That I like to go to Wisconsin to Maggie May barn dances. They are awesome.

What are your hobbies: I love music. Also playing cards; once a week we play

cards with friends, ages 93 and 95. That makes their day! My husband and I play every night. In the summer, we travel to steam tractor shows and show our tractors. I also collect music boxes.

Additional comments: If there is anybody out there who thinks they are depressed, just look around and help someone in need.

It is the best medicine there is. If you can’t find someone to help, just go to a nursing home. There are many people who would love to have a visitor walk through their door.

On Easter, I get up very early and make homemade cinnamon rolls and take them to my friends. At Christmas time, we are up early Christmas Eve day to make about 50 rolls again. By noon, I’m finished, and then Jerry and I take off to deliver to friends along with the 20 dishes of all homemade candy we have made ourselves.

Judy Hopkins Age: 68.

Town: Granville.

How long have you lived there: 33 years.

Family: Husband, Arch; daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Andy Callaci; son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Karissa Hopkins; and grandchildren, Ellie and Emmett Callaci, and Murphy Hopkins.

Organizations: Putnam County Food Pantry, Therapy Dogs International, previous member of Putnam County School Board.

Activities: Food pantry vice president and Christmas basket co-chair.

Manage pantry volunteer schedule, monthly delivery to homebound people, compile statistics, manage files.

Through Therapy Dogs International, I visit schools and nursing homes with my dog, Doogie. I served

as president of the school board for three years and was very involved in the planning for and construction of the new primary school, teacher negotiations, financial planning and encouraging programs that promoted high student achievement. I am proud to have led a very active school board and value the work we did together.

How long have you served the organizations: Food pantry: 28 years, Therapy Dogs International: 8 years, school board: 8 years.

Why is volunteerism so important to you: I believe that all of us have an obligation to help others and serve our community. It is important to be open to change and help our schools and organizations improve and grow to meet the needs of those they serve. I was a school social

worker most of my professional life. My volunteer activities are related to my personal commitment to social justice and helping others. Putnam County is a caring community that reaches out to people in need.

What gaps do you see in your organizations that need to be filled: Volunteering for the food pantry or being a member of the school board are both excellent ways to serve the community. Neither can function without the help of many community members. The pantry always needs help unloading food, stocking shelves and filling food orders for clients.

The school board especially needs active, involved, assertive members knowledgeable in business, buildings, personnel and investments.

surprised to know about you: I am making a bride’s dress for granddaughter Ellie’s American Girl doll!

Hobbies: Reading, sewing, traveling, golf, hanging out with grandkids.

Additional comments: The Putnam County Food Pantry has been growing since it was founded more than 27 years ago and is unique in that it runs smoothly and efficiently with no paid employees.

President Gayle Reno, secretary Cheryl Mennie and treasurer Sherrie Carlson have been actively involved since its beginning. John Shimkus, our tireless manager, has worked for many years to make the pantry run smoothly. The food pantry now feeds more than 3,000 people a year thanks to the ongoing collaboration of its board and the help of countless Putnam County volunteers.

What organization(s) do you volunteer for: St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church Princeton quilters and the Bureau County Fair.

What activities do you do for the organization(s): Quilters: Serving – make quilts for Lutheran World Relief and also sew backpacks, school bags and cloth diapers for LWR layettes. Bureau County Fair: Superintendent of Floriculture.

How long have you served the organization(s): St. Matthew about 5 years.

Bureau County Fair since 1970.

Why is volunteerism so important to you: God has been so good to me (us), and we, in America, have so much. How can we not share what we have with those less fortunate than us here in Bureau County or in the rest of the world?

God expects it of us.

What do you enjoy about your community: Small town, a great amount of things to do. I moved here from the Chicago area. I was so happy to be out of a big city. I love living in a town that is surrounded by cornfields and has boundaries but is accessible to other areas.

How would you encourage others to get involved in volunteering: I truly enjoy what I do. I am enthusiastic about these activities. I invite others to participate and let them

know what joy it brings into my life.

How did you get involved with volunteering: Serving others, especially with church-related things, was something taught to me in my early Christian education and by my parents.

When I was asked to help and saw a need I could fulfill, I did it.

Why do you volunteer: Because I am retired. Well, almost, I still play organ for two churches. It is a way to make my retirement years useful and productive. It is a way to use the skills I have acquired during my lifetime.

How does volunteering make you feel: It (quilting)

fills my long winter days with something good to do.

It takes the focus off myself and puts it on service to other people. I can give and create something for another person whom I will never meet and give without being thanked. That is a real gift.

What gaps do you see in your organization that need to be filled: We always need more people to help. There is always a special talent that each person has that can be used for other people.

What would people be surprised to know about you: I was an only child.

I am a very quiet person.

I enjoy being alone much of my time and working to

produce and create things.

Yet I truly enjoy other people and the art of good conversation.

What are your hobbies: Sewing, cooking, food preservation (canning), interior decorating, gardening (food and ornamentals) and growing food for the food pantry and sharing with neighbors.

Additional comments: It is difficult to talk about these volunteer things as I think we should never advertise or flaunt our good deeds. The word hero bothers me. I do not see myself that way. The word servant fits better. I do that because that is what Jesus asked of us to be.
