Five garden tips to help save endangered, threatened species

By Anthony Victor Reyes Newton Daily News From the monarch butterfly to the rusty patched bumblebee, several insect populations are disappearing in Iowa.

According to the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge officials, 85 percent of Iowa land was once covered with tallgrass prairie.

Now, less than 0.1 percent of the original tallgrass prairie remains in the Hawkeye State, causing several populations of its wildlife inhabitants to slowly decline.

With this change, several insect populations are decreasing due to the loss of habitat.

Experts at the refuge say with the added effects of climate change, insecticides and herbicides, many species are fighting for survival.

“Bees and butterflies in general, it is a lot of things – loss of habitat, the prairie is disappearing, herbicide and insecticides,” Karen Viste-Sparkman, a biologist at the refuge said.

“Bees have been declining. Recently, the rusty patched bumblebee was listed as an endangered species. That is found in Iowa. There are only two or three counties in Iowa that has had records in the last 20 years or so. It used to be a common bee, and not it is really rare.”

According to the biologist, a recent report has found the rusty patched bumblebee have been sighted in residential yards and cities. Viste-Sparkman said the home garden may have a greater impact on these insect population than ever before.

“The rusty patched bumblebee, they are finding it in people’s gardens,” she said. “This

is an endangered species. You wouldn’t think you would be able to find some iconic species, like the spotted owl, in someone’s yard.”

To help combat this growing problem, Viste-Sparkman shared some tips for what people can do to help increase these declining populations in their own personal garden.

Plant native flowers and plants in your garden.

Viste-Sparkman said residential gardens, if planned correctly, can be a wildlife refuge, preserving several plants and animals that once were common across Iowa.

Planting several different native plants that bloom throughout the year will help increase the threatened insect population, as several of these species need native plants for their pollen and nectar.

“Native plants are going to provide the best food for bees and butterflies. It is important to have plants that bloom throughout the season. Different species will bloom at different times,” Viste-Sparkman said. “If you just have plants that bloom in the middle of the summer, then you are not going to help some bees that are around the whole season.”

The biologist said typical flowers bought in a store or a nursery, like daylillies may not produce enough nectar and pollen for the insects. She said plants that are grown to have double flowers are difficult for insects, like butterflies, to get Anthony Reyes/Daily News to the nectar.

Growing small business provides After more than epoxy flooring for residential, 30 years, Teague commercial needs construction comes

When Nevels M a y tag left Newton in 2007, Nevels adapted. He went back to school and focused on entrepreneurship. After receiving training in Florida, he started working in concrete staining and engraving. Soon, he was running a business that specializes in epoxy flooring.

“The epoxy flooring just kind of fell in as a natural add-on, and it’s pretty much taken over the business,” Nevels said. “I would say we’re probably 95 percent coating-based, as opposed to the staining and engraving.”

The business owner’s motto of changing with the times has proven successful. When Accents in Concrete started out, most of the work was residential. Now, it’s a bout a 50/50 split between residential and

Nevels said the business continues to grow every year, but he does not aim for it to get too big. Right now it’s usually himself and a couple of people helping out, but he will call on more people for bigger jobs.

“I don’t have a desire to push it to the point where it’s unmanageable by me,” he said. “I just want to try to bring in

a couple of crews would be my goal, so I can still keep my fingers wrapped around the whole thing.”

Epoxy flooring is helpful in many situations, whether it’s a personal garage or a manufacturing facility.

Sealed flooring is much easier to clean compared to concrete, and some of the sealants can also provide chemical resistance. Nevels has done

work for Woodrow Wilson Elementary, Underwriters Laboratory, Cookies Barbeque, mechanic shops, kidney dialysis centers and more.

Accents in Concrete also helps repair poor concrete. A Pella garage suffered a car-fire, for example, and Nevels was able to patch up the bad spots and coat the floor to save the concrete slab.

Business owners benefit from the services, too.

“The Polaris dealership in Toledo burned down,” Nevels said. “The owner was told that they were going to have to tear the concrete out.

We were able to go in and clean it and patch it and coat it. He was able to save a slab for his entire store.”

Improper prep and improper or bad material are the two things that can cause a floor to fail, Nevels said. At Accents in Concrete, he said the prep will be done right because he handles it himself and stands by his work. The company also works with material manufacturers who stand behind their material.

Training never ends for the small business owner. He recently returned from a seminar in Chicago and tries to catch at least one training session each year to FLOORING | 6

After more than 30 years away from Iowa, Troy Teague, along with his family, have come home.

Teague, owner of J.T. Teague Construction, LLC., is once again working to build a successful construction business in Newton, much like his previous company in Phoenix, Ariz.

“We’ve been talking about moving back to Iowa for the past five to 10 years. It was a big change going there and after 30 years it is a big change coming back,” Teague said. “We picked Newton because it seemed like it could use some help in the residential area as far as beautifying the town.

We’re dedicated to doing that.”

The full service construction company can work start to finish building a house. Teague, along with his son and nephew, started back in Iowa by working on their own properties and are beginning to expand to new projects throughout the city.

Jaren Lucas has been the lead landscaper at the Newton location for four years. Lucas said the store will most likely be blooming with more cus-

tomers once spring officially arrives.

Popular services that Earl May’s landscape department offers are far and in between — planting new flower beds or updating old ones, re-seeding, retaining walls and planting trees.

Lucas said he usually goes to the home for a consultation, if the job is big enough, and then he starts on the project within two weeks. If it is a smaller project such as, spring clean up, Lucas said Earl May employees usually come within a few days.

Earl May’s storefront will soon be full of vibrant flowers, flower pots, and all of the utensils needed to start your own garden. Lucas said popular spring flowers are hydrangeas and lilacs, as well as evergreen trees.

“A lot of insects in general, including some bees, will over winter in the stems of plants.

If you go out in the fall, cut down all of the stems in your garden and ship them off to the landfill, then those bees are not going to be back next year,” she said. If you can leave the stems in a part of your yard until the spring when the bees come out, you can cut them off then.”

Tolerate chewed leaves.

Viste-Sparkman recommends gardeners to allow insects to chew on their beloved plants.

Although it may affect the aesthetics of the garden, by allowing the insects to munch on the plants will allow more of them to stay in the area, increasing their population.

“You have to be tolerate of chewed leaves.

That means you got insects out there. You have some nonnative insects, like the Japanese beetle,

that will destroy everything. If it is just chewing on the leaves a little bit, it might just mean you may have native butterflies that are using your garden which is a good thing,” she said. “If it is just an ornamental plant, so what if it gets chewed a little bit. It is not like someone’s livelihood depends on in, except the butterflies.”

No matter how you choose to set up your garden, Viste-Sparkman said it is important to remember the impact endangered insects, like the rusty patched bumblebee, have on our ecosystem.

“We depend on bees to pollinate a lot of the food that we eat. They are also an indicator of the health of our ecosystem,” she said. “If we are killing off the insects, what are the long term effects on us going to be?”

Small-town alternative

Roberts Bros. has lawn & garden needs for rural JC

Mike Mendenhall/Daily News Kevin Williams of Roberts Bros. True Value in Prairie City, has been busy ordering lawn and garden supplies for the quickly-approaching planting season. Their small town option allows rural green thumbs to purchase their supplies locally and avoid a 20mile trip to a big box store.

PRAIRIE CITY — As flurries still fly outside, Kevin Dalton of Prairie City’s Roberts Bros. True Value is behind his computer screen preparing for green to come.

He’s ordering flats and pallets of lawn and garden supplies which will soon dominate the front of his the store.

It might be late February, but recent unseasonably warm weather has already brought in early gardeners to pick up Round-Up weed killer from Ginny, Mike and son Kevin Dalton’s small family-owned store, which sits on State Street in the shadows of the skyscraper-like Heartland Co-op grain silos on Prairie City’s west end.

“Our product of the month in the (True Value) circular is already Round-Up weed killer, which is kind of weird,” he said.

“We’ve already had someone locally in here looking for a herbicide,” Ginny Dalton added from behind the cash register.

“Can you believe that? In February.”

Kevin Dalton, who is the newest generation to run their

True Value hardware and home store, said Roberts Bros. has been offering lawn and garden supplies since day one in 1928.

They sell fertilizers, pest and herbicides, and grass, vegetable, flower and plant seed. Due to the amount of manpower it takes to tend to live plants, Roberts Bros does not do live plants or conduct its own germination, but Dalton said what sets their Prairie City store apart from the big guys is the ability to know your garden center seller and make special requests.

“We also order items people ask for.” he said. “Over the last several years we’ve gotten a lot of strange things in. One thing that’s a difference between us and the box store is you can come in, grab what you want and you’re out the door. In the big box stores you’re in there, at a minimum, for a half an hour.

And that’s if you even can find what you need.”

Kevin Dalton said the season change always brings more foot traffic, and as a big box alternative in a small town, Roberts Bros sees a lot of rural customers from surrounding committees including Colfax, Monroe, Reasnor, Runnells and Mitch-

ellville.

Once the pallets of fertilizers and chemicals come in, it will take Kevin Dalton about three weeks to have his outdoor displays built and ready for lawn and garden season. Under the storefront canopy, Dalton will display big-ticket items like lawn mowers and wheelbarrows — machinery gardeners might not expect from a smalltown hardware store.

“It’s just something we’ve always done,” Kevin Dalton said.

For the Daltons, the trickiest thing about being a full-service lawn and garden supplier is figuring out which lawnmower parts to order of their customers. They will even do a little bit of mower service sharpening blades, changing the oil and spark plugs so Prairie City-area folks don’t have to haul the unit into the city for maintenance .

“At $150 to $200 a piece, lawn mowers have become almost disposable, which I really don’t like. But we’ll do the smaller things for customers if they bring it in,” Kevin Dalton said.
