New windows can give your home a new look

By Ty Rushing Daily News Senior Staff Writer With spring peeking around the corner, it may be time to consider revamping the exterior or certain interior portions of your home.

Some ways you can spruce up the exterior of your home, without resorting to drastic measures, is replacing your windows and frames.

Replacing either one of these can give your home a new look and can help with energy efficiency, which puts more money back in your pocket.

One trend in windows is insulated glass windows.

“Insulated glass (windows) are two panes of glass, where there is dead air space with an inert gas in between,” Larry said. “What the gas and the air space does, is it insulates the inside paned glass from the outside paned glass and therefore, the cold doesn’t transfer through the air space. The window framing itself is

more efficient than the older framings used to be, (because) of the joints and the seals and so forth.”

Tom Spidle, who has worked for Hamilton Glass for a decade and is the resident door and window expert, elaborated a bit more on the savings.

“If you look at a house that was built in the early 1900s versus a modern window and then you look at a house build in the '60s and '70s versus a modern window, there is percentage for both of those. Obviously, the

older the house, the better the energy savings if you put in new windows.

The technology used in newer windows also has one added benefit most people don’t expect.

“Noise-reduction.

For a new look, custom design your space

By Kate Malott Daily News Staff Writer When a room in your house becomes dull, it might be a good time to change the color, but when a room becomes outdated, then it’s time for a bigger change.

Investing in new cabinets, wall units or book shelves is one way to create a fresh, fun and functional atmosphere in a room.

At Cabinets By Design, located at 1310 S. Fifth Ave. E. in Newton, owner Roger Patterson works to design, build and install woodworking projects into new homes or ones going through any level of remodeling.

Patterson, who use to work in the maintenance department at the Newton Community School District and as an independent electrician, has been a wood-

worker all his life.

In 1995, he opened his first shop in downtown Newton and has been woodworking for a living ever since. He’s seen many changes in design preferences and appliances throughout that time.

“I think most people are spending the extra money to go to granite counter tops or the newer style laminate tops with under-mount sinks,” he said.

In the living room, a common trend with his clients is their desire to mount flat screen TVs above fireplaces, and in the kitchen, people are going to rollout shelves and two tier silverware drawers, he said.

Cabinets By Design does work for both area businesses and home owners.

Patterson says that most people bring in a picture of what they want, and he can

recreate it to fit their needs.

Another common option is for him to work with the client and use the computer design program to create a more custom designed model.

“We told Roger what we wanted in a new kitchen we added on to our house. He developed a plan, offered great suggestions and incorporated our ideas,” client Kathy Trotter said.

“Our dream kitchen is now a reality, and we love it.

Roger’s work was efficient and on schedule.”

Some projects are large, like a new kitchen or entertainment center; however, some projects are small. Gun cabinets, kitchen re-face jobs, drawers and desks are examples of other pieces that Cabinets By Design makes to meet a smaller need.

Aleya Salon owner JoAnne Kunkel hired Patterson to build wall units and other various projects for the studios at the salon.

“Roger does wonderful work. He did a great job, and his work was very timely,” she said.

Installing new cabinets can be expensive and stressful, but Patterson said that the finished project makes the difference.

“There’s a lot of satisfaction there when you get done and people just love it,” Patterson said. “A lot of times, it turns out being a lot better and nicer than (a client) realized it was going to be in the process of designing and building it.”

There are many advantages to making home improvements on your own, including the opportunity to test your mettle at projects big and small.

Many a novice DIYer has learned the ups and downs of home improvement through trial and error. But the following are a handful of lessons first-timers can heed before beginning their maiden voyages into the world of DIY home improvements.

• Measure twice, cut once. Perhaps this is the best-known mantra of home improvement, yet many still ignore it.

Whether you’re anxious to get started or simply because you still cannot convert metric to standard formula, you must take the time to measure twice before cutting.

Learning that you’re a hair too short later will be prove frustrating and time-consuming and often necessitates a lastminute run to the store for more materials. Always measure multiple times before making

cuts.

• Enlist a helper.

Having a partner helping with the work is the most efficient way to tackle a project. This person can assist you with heavy lifting or moving things or by holding the ladder or simply passing tools your way. He or she also can manage work while you make another run to the home center for more supplies. Having a helper around also provides companionship during tedious projects.

• Lighten the load.

You run the risk of injury, both to yourself and your belongings, if you attempt to move heavy items on your own. When moving heavy items, take steps to lighten your load. For example, empty or remove drawers from desks and dressers before moving them. Rely on sliding pads when moving furniture so items can be slid into place instead of lifted. Always ask a buddy to help move especially heavy items.

• Prime before painting. Painting can be a time-consuming task.

In an effort to save time, some people will look for painting shortcuts, and these may include skipping the priming portion of painting.

Failure to use a primer could mean having to paint coat after coat, which can become costly and take up a significant amount of time. • Expect the unexpected. Although many renovation projects go off without a hitch, you

How to repair dead grass Metro Creative Connection Special to the Daily News A patch of dead grass on an otherwise lush lawn can be a frustrating eyesore for homeowners. Whether lawn care is your passion or just something you do to maintain the value of your home, dead grass can be exasperating.

But as unsightly as dead grass can be, addressing it and restoring the dead patches can be somewhat simple. Before you can restore grass, however, you must first identify the source of the problem.

Grass often dies because of urine damage, which is typically characterized by a dead spot surrounded by otherwise green grass. Grub infestation might be at fault when dead grass appears, and such an infestation often produces patches of light brown grass that are scattered throughout the lawn.

It’s also possible that dead grass is a result of human error. If your lawn was overfertilized, then patches of gray-green grass may appear. Fungal disease is another common culprit behind dead grass, and such disease can manifest itself in different ways. Once you have identified why the grass is dead, which may require the help of a professional, then you can

begin to treat your lawn.

Urine Damage Urine damage is often limited to a particular area of the grass where your family pet routinely relieves itself. Once a particular patch of grass has worn down, the pet may move on to another spot. But if you quickly notice a dead spot due to urine damage, you can train the animal to urinate elsewhere, limiting the damage it causes. When repairing the grass, dig a hole that’s roughly four inches deep and fill it with fresh soil until it’s level with the soil surrounding the dead patch.

Then you can sprinkle seed on top of the freshly laid soil and water the spot. Grass should grow in and stay green so long as you prevent further urine damage.

Insect Damage Addressing dead spots caused by insect damage can be a little more complicated, and some homeowners may prefer to hire a professional. If you want to handle the problem on your own, apply pesticide to the affected areas so the insects behind the problem are killed. Once the insects are no more, cut the grass, raking the affected area to remove the dead grass and any additional debris. Scatter grass seed

over the affected areas and then apply an appropriate fertilizer and water immediately. Professionals may know just the right fertilizer for your lawn, so even if you want to go it alone, visit a local lawn care center to ask for advice about addressing your particular problem.

Fertilizer Damage Fertilizer damage can also prove difficult to address, as applying fresh seeds too soon can kill any freshly growing seedlings. So grass that has been damaged by overfertilization must first be allowed to fully die. Once that has happened, the grass can be cut and any remaining debris or dead grass can be removed. Seed can then be scattered, and you can even add some additional soil before laying down an appropriate amount of fertilizer and watering the lawn immediately. If you don’t trust yourself to use fertilizer correctly, then hire a professional to do the job for you. This will cost a little more, but you likely won’t wake up to more dead patches of grass down the road.

Dead grass can be unsightly and turn an otherwise lush lawn into a patchy eyesore. But addressing dead grass can be easy and can quickly restore a lawn to its green grandeur.

But homeowners who cannot afford a full remodel can still give their kitchens a new

look and can do so for relatively little money. Painting kitchen cabinets a new color or simply giving fading cabinets a fresh coat of paint can instantly add life to a kitchen, giving the room an entirely different feel without break-

ing the bank. The following are a few tips for homeowners planning to paint their kitchen cabinets.

But other materials, including plastic laminate, are not so amenable to repainting, and will likely require specialty paints. Homeowners with plastic laminate cabinets should first paint a spot or two with a sample paint, being careful to choose a spot that’s concealed. If the paint bonds well to the plastic laminate, then you can go forward and buy enough paint to redo all of the cabinets. If the paint does not take, consult a professional to find a paint that’s likely to be a better fit.

Expect this process to be one of trial and error.

• Plan for ornate cabinets

• Sand the surfaces. Once the surfaces have been cleaned and are completely dry, it’s time to start sanding them.

Lightly sand the doors using a wood sanding block, working to create a firm base to which fresh paint can easily adhere.

Bats Bats have a bad reputation, as people unnecessarily fear bats because they believe them to be carriers of disease. But many bats feed off of insects or fruits and will not harm a human. The average brown bat can eat 1,000 mosquitoes in an hour, so it’s easy to see why bats are good to have around. Mos-

quitoes are not only a nuisance but also harbor potentially dangerous diseases. Bats also may eat certain rodents, which can cut down on the number of animals burrowing in a yard.
