The Whiteside County Community Health Clinic, located at 1300 W. 2nd Street, Rock Falls, Illinois, provides medical, dental, and behavioral health services to our community.

Our dental clinic is here to serve people of all ages by providing services like dental cleanings, extractions, and fillings. Studies have shown that oral health is integral to your overall health. The mouth is directly connected to the body by the bloodstream and the digestion system. The mouth naturally contains bacteria that aid in the digestion of food as well as protect the teeth and gums.

However, there is also bacteria in your mouth that can cause tooth decay and gum disease. Not practicing oral health has been associated with cardiovas-

cular disease caused by inflammation and infections that oral bacteria can cause. Endocarditis, an infection of the inner lining of the heart, has also been linked to poor oral hygiene. In order to practice good oral hygiene, the American Dental Association recommends that you: brush your teeth twice a day, use a proper toothbrush, practice good techniques, keep your toothbrush clean, and know when to replace your toothbrush. The American Dental Association also says that daily flossing is an integral part in maintaining good oral hygiene.

Because oral health is integral to your overall health, our dental clinic works in close relationship with our medical clinic, which offers primary care services. The Community Health Clinic also offers counseling services in our behavioral health clinic.

According to the American Cancer Society, certain viruses, bacteria and parasites are now recognized as risk factors for cancer. While the percentage of cancers linked to infections is higher in developing countries than it is in first world countries such as the United States, between 15 and 20 percent of cancers across the globe can be connected to infections. Infections can increase a person’s risk of developing cancer in various ways. In some instances, a virus can insert its own genes into an otherwise healthy cell, causing the cell to grow out of control.

Selenium is a trace mineral that can be very potent in cancer prevention. According to Susan G. Komen, selenium helps antioxidants work more effectively and may reduce cancer incidence as a result. Selenium also may kill cancer cells and help normal cells repair their DNA. According to a Harvard study of more than 1,000 men with prostate cancer, those with the highest levels of selenium in their blood were 40 percent less likely to develop advanced disease over the next 10-plus years than men with the lowest levels of selenium in their blood. In addition, data from a five-year study from researchers at Cornell University discovered 200 micrograms of selenium per day resulted in 63 percent fewer prostate tumors and a 39 percent overall decrease in cancer deaths, among other benefits. Selenium is found in Brazil nuts, yellowfin tuna, halibut, sardines, and many other foods.

In other cases, infections cause long-term inflammation in a particular area of the body, leading to changes in the affected cells and in immune cells that are nearby. Those changes can eventually lead to cancer. Certain infections can compromise the immune system to such a great extent that it is no longer capable of fully protecting the body from some cancers. While infections can increase a person’s risk for cancer, the ACS notes that many people who develop the types of infections that have been linked to cancer do not ultimately receive a cancer diagnosis.

Foods that may help fight cancer (MCC)

People concerned about their cancer risk may find that switching their diets can do a world of good. Certain foods may reduce cancer risk, according to various cancer experts, including the MD Anderson Cancer Center. In addition, some foods might increase a person’s risk of developing cancer. Knowing what to put on the table come breakfast, lunch and dinner can go a long way toward reducing one’s cancer risk.

Some foods show cancer-fighting properties, although it is impossible to currently say one food or another can actually stop cancer from developing. Studies have shown that diets filled with colorful fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of developing cancer, heart disease and

diabetes. Cancer Research UK points out that some foods, such as red meat and salt-preserved foods, can increase a person’s risk of developing some cancers, while vegetables, fruits and foods high in fiber have the opposite effect.

A comprehensive review of thousands of studies on physical activity, diet and weight conducted for the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research found that plant-based foods are the best at fighting cancer. Broccoli, berries and garlic showed some of the strongest tendencies to prevent cancer. According to research associates at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, a variety of chemicals from plants known as phytochemicals protect cells from harmful compounds in food and in the environment.

Phytochemicals prevent cell damage and mutations. When making their grocery lists, people who want to eat healthy and lower their cancer risk can include as many of these foods as possible.

• Garlic: Studies suggest that garlic can reduce the incidence of stomach cancer by attacking bacteria associated with some ulcers and belly cancers. Sulfur

compounds in the food may stimulate the immune system’s natural defenses against cancer and could reduce inflammation and tumor growth.

• Broccoli: Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage and kale contain glucosinolates. These are phytochemicals that produce protective enzymes that activate in the intestines.

One particular compound, sulforaphane, is strongest and found in broccoli. Protective properties are highest in raw or steamed broccoli.

• Blueberries: Blueberries are loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants neutralize the unstable compounds, called free radicals, that can damage cells and lead to cancer.

• Tomatoes: The red, rich coloring of tomatoes comes from lycopene. In laboratory tests, lycopene has stopped cancer cells, including breast, lung, and endometrial cancers, from growing. Researchers speculate that lycopene protects cells from damage that could lead to cancer by boosting the immune system.

How women can protect against osteoporosis (MCC)

A bone disease that occurs when the body loses too much bone, makes too little bone or both, osteoporosis can be debilitating. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, osteoporosis is responsible for two million broken bones each year, a figure that experts predict with rise to three million by 2025.

• Include ample calcium and vitamin D in your diet. The NOF notes that calcium and vitamin D are both vital to building strong, dense bones when you’re young, and both calcium and vitamin D keep bones strong and healthy as the body ages. Women age 50 and younger need 1,000 milligrams of calcium each day, while those 51 and older need 1,200 milligrams each day. Calcium-rich foods include dairy products like low- or nonfat milk, yogurt and cheese. Women age 50 and younger need between 400 and 800 international units (IU) of vitamin D each day, while those age 50 and older need between 800 and 1,000 IU each day. The body can get vitamin D from sunlight and supplements or multivitamins. Vitamin D is naturally available in just a few foods, such as fatty fish like wild-caught salmon or tuna.

While anyone can suffer from osteoporosis, women are more likely than men to develop the disease. Studies suggest that while up to one in four men age 50 and older will break a bone due to osteoporosis, one in two women age 50 and older are likely to suffer such a fate.

The NOF notes that osteoporosis is often referred to as a silent disease, with many people not even realizing they have it until they suffer a fracture. Because of the silent nature of osteoporosis and their increased vulnerability to it, women may want to take the following measures to protect themselves against

Heavy consumption of alcohol can contribute to bone loss, while drinks that contain caffeine, including coffee, tea and sodas, can decrease calcium absorption and contribute to bone loss as well. Drink alcohol and caffeinated beverages in moderation.

Protein powder shakes once were consumed almost exclusively by professional body builders or gym rats looking to increase their muscle mass. But long gone are the days of finding protein shake supplies in specialty fitness stores.

Nowadays protein shakes are mainstream and big business for the fitness and diet industry.

Although protein shakes are not a magic solution for six-pack abs or overnight weight loss, they can — when used correctly — make a healthy addition to a fitness and nutrition regimen. With that said, they may not be right for everyone. But it’s important for individuals to weigh the pros and cons of protein products and work with their physicians to find the right regimen for their age, gender, body type, and desired goals.

Protein shakes have a lot of positive attributes. Convenient and portable, protein shakes are formulated with readily available, highly digestible protein to fuel the body post-workout. Protein is essential for building muscle and overall body strength and is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. It also helps make hormones, enzymes and other body chemicals. Protein shakes deliver whey or casein protein in a convenient way. And because protein shakes tend to be concentrated, many people can consume the recommended level of protein for their activity type without having to eat many calorie-laden meals.

Shakes also can be filling and help people feel satiated longer. Some people substitute protein shakes for meals once per day, eliminating a potentially calorie-laden meal in favor of a lowcalorie shake.

While protein shakes can be beneficial, the International Society of Sports Nutrition recommends that those who exercise should try to reach their protein requirements via whole foods. Protein shakes are not complete meals; therefore, they may create nutritional deficits if they are routinely used as meal substitutes.

The Mayo Clinic offers that protein shakes often fall short of supplying significant amounts of carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats. They’re also generally missing naturally occurring fiber, antioxidants and phytochemicals. Protein shakes may be flavored with artificial ingredients or sweeteners which can be fine when consumed occasionally, but may not be recommended as a long-term meal replacement.

Too much protein may not be a good thing, either. The U.S. Department of Health recommends that adults should not consume more than twice the recommended daily intake of protein, which is 55.5 g for men and 45 g for women. Protein shakes often have 20 to 40 g of protein per serving. So it’s easy to see how consumers of protein shakes may consume more than their recommended amount of protein. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, consistently exceeding daily protein requirements can lead to weight gain, high blood cholesterol, an elevated risk for heart disease, and kidney complications. Also, The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine states that consuming too much protein can raise a person’s risk of developing cancer, osteoporosis and kidney stones.

Protein shakes are convenient forms of a nutrient that active bodies need. When used in moderation and as part of an overall healthy eating plan, they should be safe. But it’s important to discuss any dietary and exercise concerns with a doctor before making drastic lifestyle changes.

Sometimes referred to as “digital eye strain,” CVS is, according to the American Optometric Association, an umbrella term used to describe a group of eye and vision-related problems that result from prolonged computer use.

The tooth decay that leads to cavities occurs when the bacteria in your mouth form a sticky plaque on your teeth. When you eat or drink, they use the sugars in the food and one of the byproducts is acid. The sticky plaque holds this acid against your teeth where it attacks your tooth enamel, leading to cavities.

1. Brush Your Teeth In the fight against cavities, it is essential that you brush your teeth properly at least twice a day with a toothpaste containing fluoride.​You can use a regular toothbrush or an electric toothbrush.

Be sure to brush all sides of your teeth: front, back, and top. Brushing your teeth removes the plaque, but it will form again in a few hours, so you have to keep doing brushing.

Approximately 50 percent of U.S. adults drink one sugary beverage per day, and nearly 63 percent of children between the ages 2 and 19 consume at least one sugar-sweetened beverage per day according to a study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Sugar occurs naturally in various foods, but added sugar, sometimes refered to as “refined sugar,” is turning up in many places, increasing the average person’s sugar intake as a result.

The World Health Organization’s official nutrition advisors state that only 5 percent of one’s daily calorie intake should consist of sugars. This equates to approximately 30 grams per day. Children should have less — no more than 19 to 24 grams per day, depending on their ages. For those who think avoiding a slice of cake or skipping soft drinks is enough, consider these somewhat hidden sources of sugar, according to the health experts at Prevention.

• Barbecue sauce: Grilling time means foods laden with flavorful barbecue sauce. Many barbecue sauces contain up to 13 grams of sugar per two tablespoons.

• Fruit-flavored yogurt: Eating yogurt can be a healthy part of a diet, but not when it is full of sugar. One container of fruit yogurt may contain up to 19 grams of sugar.

• Granola bars: These convenient snacks can pack a sugary punch. One bar can boast 12 grams of sugar.

• Salad dressing: Dousing healthy salads with dressing may increase caloric intake and sugar consumption. French, Russian and Thousand Island dressings, for example, often have high amounts of sugar per serving size — some as many as 9 to 10 grams per serving.

• Frozen foods: In addition to high levels of sodium (used as a preservative), frozen entrees may have as many as 30 to 40 grams of added sugar per serving.

• Energy drinks: The pick-me-up energy drinks provide is largely fueled by sugar and caffeine. Some of these drinks can have a whopping 83 grams of sugar.

Reading product labels is the easiest way to see how much sugar is lurking in foods. While not all sugar is bad, and naturally occurring sugar-based carbohydrates can help supply ready energy to active muscles, most sugar is made of empty calories that can pack on the pounds. According to Dr. Pamela Peeke, author of “The Hunger Fix,” refined sugar also can cause cells to age more quickly and lead to excessive inflammation, which increases one’s risk for many diseases.

Fighting fatigue after surviving cancer (MCC)

Upon being diagnosed with cancer, men and women often understand they’re facing an uphill battle against the disease. But few may know what to expect after successful treatment. While the cancer might be gone, some unfortunate side effects may linger.

One such side effect is fatigue. According to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, some cancer survivors report feeling tired or worn out even after their treatment has ended. Doctors know that fatigue during treatment can be caused by a host of factors, including the therapy itself. But researchers remain uncertain regarding the cause of post-treatment fatigue. Such fatigue can be especially disheartening, as many people who just survived cancer have a renewed vigor for life and don’t want to be affected by feelings of exhaustion.

Fighting fatigue after cancer treatment requires the help of a physician. But because no two patients are the same, survivors may need to figure out what works best for them as they look to overcome feelings of fatigue after successful cancer treatments.

• Speak with a physician. Physicians might be able to help cancer survivors overcome their post-treatment fatigue by recommending alternatives to medications that might be compromising their energy levels. Doctors may also help patients design diets that can boost their energy levels, while recommending they avoid certain foods that might have the opposite effect.

• Monitor energy levels and plan accordingly. Some cancer survivors may

notice that their energy levels are high at certain points of the day and low at others. Cancer survivors can monitor these levels and plan their days so they are not especially busy when their energy levels are at their lowest. This can prevent burnout and help survivors avoid the domino effect that low energy levels can have.

• Take short naps. The National Sleep Foundation notes that a 20-minute nap can improve alertness and mood and enhance performance. Men and women who recently completed successful cancer treatments can schedule 20-minute breaks during those times of day when their energy levels tend to drop off. A 20-minute nap might make for a more alert and productive rest of the day.

• Ease back in. The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute recommends cancer survivors do what they enjoy after treatment, but do less of it. If they are already fatigued, cancer survivors should avoid tiring themselves out, no matter how much they might have missed certain activities while they were sick. Energy levels may gradually improve, and as they do, cancer survivors can adjust their activity schedules.

Many cancer survivors are still coping with fatigue even after successful treatments. Allowing time for energy levels to be restored and taking steps to prevent further fatigue can help cancer survivors overcome this often unforeseen hurdle.
