Alden Estates of Shorewood

By Allison Selk Joliet Herald News Since 2012, Alden Estates of Shorewood Short Term Rehabilitation and Post-Acute Services Center has offered a modern approach to a variety of therapies.

It’s 92-bed facility feels like a five-star hotel, according to administrator Stephanie Castleman, which sets Alden Estates of Shorewood apart from other facilities. Castleman painted a picture of her arrival each morning.

“I walk in and the popcorn maker is on, and the fresh smell of popcorn is in the air, it feels like a fancy hotel lobby. The receptionist greets clients and as I walk around the Activity staff prep an activity or a movie for the day, the nurses do their med passes, and patients are finishing up their breakfasts,” Castleman said.

Castleman said of the 150 staff members, “We are close knit-all working for the same goal.”

That goal has always been to get the client better and back home.

Castleman said the average stay at Alden Estates of Shorewood Short Term Rehabilitation and Post-Acute Services Center was 7 to 14 days.

In the past year, Alden Estates of Shorewood Short Term Rehabilitation and Post-Acute Services Center has earned the Joint Commission Post-Acute Care Certification. Castleman said this accreditation was a three-day process where the center was surveyed on everything in the building from processes to policies. This accreditation means that the center functions at a higher level than state of Illinois standards and will have to continue with that level of quality to care in order to keep the accreditation.

Alden Estates of Shorewood Short Term Rehabilitation and PostAcute Services Center also holds the highest score with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Five-Star Quality Rating System.

Victoria Wolpoff, The Alden Network’s Vice President Marketing of Public Relations, said this rating was based on the Illinois Department of Public Health surveys and looked at staff, care, quality and chart reviews.

Castleman said Alden Estates of Shorewood Short Term Rehabilitation and Post-Acute Services Center was voted one of the best senior care facilities in Will County the past two years and in 2018, voted best senior living on SeniorAdvisor.com.

Clients can find two types of care at the center, which include postacute care after a hospital stay and rehabilitation therapies.

One area was the post-acute care includes OrthopedicPro, CardioPro, PulmonaryPro and NeuroStrokePro. According to Alden Estates of Shorewood Short Term Rehabilitation and Post-Acute Services Center, OrthopedicPro rehabilitation program

focuses on patients who have recently had hip or knee surgery.

CardioPro helps those who have suffered from a heart attack, heart disease or after heart surgery. PulmonaryPro rehabilitations clients who have chronic breathing problems from emphysema, chronic bronchitis or lung diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Lastly, the NeuroStrokePro rehabilitation service was designed for individuals who suffered a stroke or other traumatic brain injury.

On the short-term rehabilitation side, patients can receive physical therapy which includes how to walk, move up and down stairs and get into and out of chairs, use of parallel bars and more. Occupational therapy focuses on everyday living, and speech therapy can focus on areas such as swallowing and annunciations.

Wolpoff said the center offers clients a five-star restaurant dining experience. They have an executive chef who prepares upscale meals for both facilities.

“Food is an important part of the healing and recovery process.

When you eat better and everything is as you need it to be, you can focus on your therapy and getting better and getting back home,” Wolpoff said.

Castleman said customer services sets Alden Estates of Shorewood Short Term Rehabilitation and Post-Acute Service Center apart from other facilities and repeat clients have confirmed her feelings.

“Our therapy programs and customer service set us apart; we pride ourselves in customer service. We want patients to feel like they are the only patient in the building,” Castleman said.

For New Lenox Woman: Dreams Do Come True Following Cancer Care at Silver Cross

During her four years of treatment for lymphoma, Elaine Johnson often recalled advice from a much-loved Disney character. “Just keep swimming,” she’d tell herself. She dreamed of beating cancer and spending more time in the Magic Kingdom.

Elaine, 57, is a huge Disney fan. And her care team at UChicago Medicine’s Comprehensive Cancer Center at Silver Cross Hospital knows all about it.

“When I came for appointments, the nurses and doctors talked to me about my love for all things Disney,” said Elaine, who lives in New Lenox, not far from the hospital where she got much of her cancer care. “It got my mind off of what was going on.”

Elaine was diagnosed with large B-cell lymphoma, a type of nonHodgkins lymphoma, in May 2014. She and her husband, Jerry, were aware that UChicago Medicine specialists provide comprehensive cancer services at Silver Cross Hospital.

“Jerry and I felt the cancer center staff in New Lenox would be the same caliber as the oncologists at UChicago Medicine in Hyde Park,” Elaine said.

Medical oncologist Grace Suh, MD, says the cancer program at Silver Cross offers patients the best of both worlds.

For the next two years, Elaine received all her treatment at Silver Cross, undergoing several Grace Suh, MD courses of chemotherapy. a new immunotherapy for blood cancers, which at the time was available only at select centers across the country through a clinical trial. Those treatments took place on UChicago Medicine’s campus, but whenever possible, Elaine’s check-ups, blood work and scans were performed at Silver Cross.

Summer heat facts and safety

For many people, summertime is synonymous with trips to the beach, water sports and recreation.

Even though summer warmth is a welcome break from winter weather for many people, State Farm warns that heat is one of the leading causes of weather-related fatalities, resulting in hundreds of deaths each year in the United States alone. Ensuring summer recreation plans remain enjoyable means keeping an eye out for heat-related illnesses and other dangers.

• Hot cars can be traps. It is never safe to leave a pet, child, elderly person, or disabled individual locked in a car. Temperatures can climb rapidly inside of a sealed vehicle, even if the windows are cracked.

• Pay attention. Listen to or read weather forecasts to stay abreast of potential temperature changes as well as the heat index. Discuss safety precautions with members of the family and make sure everyone knows what

to do in an emergency.

• Stock up on fluids. The Red Cross says to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, even if you are not thirsty. Avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine.

Make sure the elderly also get plenty of water, as they often do not recognize dehydration as readily as others.

• Limit strenuous activities. Reschedule outdoor activities if there is a heat wave, or move them to cooler times of the day. Spend the hottest portion of the day, usually between noon and 3 p.m., in the shade or inside in the air conditioning. People on job sites should take more frequent breaks and find shade whenever possible during these hours.

• Change your clothes. Loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing will help keep you cool. Avoid dark colors when spending time in the sun.

• Recognize distress signals. Heat stress, exhaustion and heat stroke progress as symptoms worsen. Nausea, weakness, elevated body temperature, clammy skin, confusion, and delirium are some of the symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

• Find ways to stay cool. Not everyone has air conditioning. On especially warm days, going to public places with air conditioning, such as libraries, can help. Be sure to check on the elderly or others who may have difficulty finding cool places to spend their day.

Is it GERD?

Understanding GERD GERD is caused when the acidic contents of the stomach leak upward into the esophagus.

In some patients, a relaxed muscle between the stomach and esophagus is the cause. Hiatal hernias can also cause acid reflux.

Having acid in the esophagus is not normal, Dr. Rotnicki says.

“The esophagus is just a conduit between the mouth and the stomach to deliver food to the stomach,” he says. “It should not get any acid exposure.”

Division St., Suite A, Morris 1310 Houbolt Rd., Joliet Heartburn, regurgitation and difficulty swallowing are all symptoms commonly associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly referred to as GERD. Yet rather than assuming the annoying symptoms are caused by GERD, it’s important to get an official diagnosis from a medical professional.

“Symptoms of acid reflux can also include chest pain and other signs that could actually be signaling a heart attack, not to mention that chronic acid reflux is dangerous in itself,” says Richard Rotnicki, D.O., a board-certified gastroenterologist on the medical staff at Morris Hospital. “Over time, GERD can cause erosions, ulcers, lung problems and a condition called Barrett’s esophagus, which can become cancerous.”

Making the Diagnosis Dr. Rotnicki says he’s having great success with a new procedure being used at Morris Hospital to more accurately diagnose GERD. The Bravo esophageal pH test directly measures the amount of acid in the lower esophagus.

During the procedure, which Dr. Rotnicki describes as quick and painless, a small device about the size of a pencil eraser is placed on the esophageal wall during endoscopy, a nonsurgical procedure used to examine the digestive track.

As the patient returns home and goes about daily life, the Bravo device continually measures the acidity in the esophagus. Whenever symptoms like heartburn, regurgitation or chest pain occur, the patient presses a button on an external monitor worn on a belt.

Four days later, the patient returns to Morris Hospital where a recording of the esophageal pH is downloaded onto a computer. By reviewing the recordings, Dr. Rotnicki can determine if the reflux symptoms occurred at the same time acid

was recorded in the esophagus.

If so, a positive diagnosis of GERD is made and treatment can begin. The tiny Bravo device detaches by itself and passes through the body.

“We target patients for this procedure who are at risk for Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal cancer,” he said. “It’s a useful tool to diagnose reflux-related problems.”

Relief from GERD Along with heartburn, regurgitation and difficulty swallowing, acid reflux can also cause coughing, sore throat, hoarseness, chronic throat-clearing, pneumonia and even dental erosion.

Dr. Rotnicki said most who suffer from acid reflux start out by treating it themselves with over-the-counter medications. Others may find relief with lifestyle changes such as avoiding spicy and fatty foods and alcohol, not smoking, eating smaller meals, not eating near bedtime, losing weight if needed, and even raising the head of their beds a few inches.

Primary care physicians may prescribe proton pump inhibitors and other medications to treat the condition. It’s when these measures aren’t effective that patients might seek help from a gastroenterologist.

“The Bravo esophageal test is the best way we can identify and diagnose the root cause of GERD symptoms,” says Dr. Rotnicki. “If it is GERD, we can recommend a treatment plan. If it’s not GERD, we need to determine what’s causing the symptoms.”

Being an orthopedist is an extremely humbling and rewarding profession

Dr. Rajeev Puri

A facebook post called Dr. Rajeev Puri “my hero”. “I’m no hero, but when we get a great result, I love being part of the story”.

He fixes people, and they are often very grateful. A recent case: a patient with a congenital defect — one leg shorter than another. The fix means a person who can now walk normally.

“I am just happy to be part of this deal,” the doctor says.

An orthopedist can take someone who cannot walk without pain and soon see them head down the hallway. “They are in so much pain.

I tell them all the risks of replacing their knee or hip. Sometimes we meet in the emergency room, when their hip is broken. I wonder if they are listening because they are in so much pain. They are trusting you with the most important thing — their health and their mobility. It is humbling.”

Dr. Puri says that one of the big pluses of practicing in this area is that he winds up seeing his patients out in the community. “It really creates a bond, I love seeing them away from the office feeling well.”

Dr. Puri says he always wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon, but he also considered becoming an engineer.

He went to Case Western Reserve on a scholarship. It’s a school that has a large biomedical program, as well as engineering and Dr. Puri worked as an engineer with General Motors for a year.

Medical school was at Ohio State University, followed by a five-

year residency there. He had a fellowship in foot and ankle work at the University of Pennsylvania, went to work for OAK for five years and then had a second fellowship, this time in joint replacement at OrthoIndy at Indianapolis.

Dr. Puri had grown up in Maine where his father was a math professor at the University of Maine and his mother was a hospital dietician. It was a small university town but a great place to be from. Dr. Puri and his wife met in medical school, married for 18 years and they have three children, two girls and a boy. For relaxation these days, Puri plays guitar, tennis and exercises.

Moving to the area and working for OAK was the result of a great interview and a family compromise. She wanted an academic appointment in a big city. He wanted to practice in a small town. OAK was the only place Dr. Puri interviewed. He was absolutely won over by the doctors at OAK, now his partners.

“These are smart surgeons, and great, charismatic guys,” Dr. Puri says.

“Here at OAK, people do not have huge egos. The doctors and staff are well-trained and they want to do a good job.”

At OAK, 85 percent of Dr. Puri’s work involves total joint replacement.

For one reason or another, over the years, he has come to be the “revision” surgeon, taking care of joint replacements that have failed.

Some are worn out with time. In other cases, rare cases, the artificial joint breaks. Sometimes there is an infection.

Dr. Puri then meets some of his patients in the emergency room and many times they are in a really bad spot. Most of the time they end up knowing each other and often times have had some fun along the way, but because of their situation Dr. Puri works extremely hard to provide them relief and resolution.

Dr. Puri says he’s humbled by people who want to regain their mobility to do simple things — like mow their lawn. “That always sticks with me,” he says, “because they have taught me to appreciate the ability to do things like that.”

Revision surgery, Dr. Puri says, is more complicated, time consuming and medically risky. Yet the general advice after the surgery is pretty much the same as with the original surgery. Practice good health. Don’t smoke. Watch your diet. Keep diabetes under control if you have it.

Dr. Puri explains that he originally was doing foot and ankle. Some of the patients he successfully treated there asked if he could do their knees, too. So Dr. Puri got that second fellowship. Now he does hips and knees, as well as feet and ankles.

While he has successfully treated many boomer patients in their 70s, he also sees plenty of damaged knees on 30-year-olds. Dr. Puri does robotic assisted surgery when appropriate and also does surgery with computer navigation. The computer navigation technique gets the

alignment between the knees and artificial joint perfect. That extends the life of the artificial knee and makes the outcome more comfortable for the patient. Just a fraction of a degree makes a big difference.

With hip surgery, Dr. Puri also uses a minimally invasive technique on qualifying patients. That means separating two muscles rather than cutting through them. Dr. Puri adds that when he is doing a hip for someone in their 30s, it is usually the result of a congenital defect or a systemic disease like lupus.

Dr. Puri says that the computer navigation technique is new to Kankakee County. An image is made of the patient’s knee. That image could be a Cat Scan. It could be an MRI. It is then loaded into a computer, which simulates the movement in the knee. Then, during the operation, the doctor knows where he is at all times.

“I have been really fortunate in my practice here. when i started doing some big revision cases, there were no other physicians to collaborate with. Some of the RUSH orthopedic surgeons provided advice and discussion about how to manage some of the more difficult problems. They continue to help me both clinically as well as provide collaboration for publishing some cases in some of our orthopedic journals.”

New Lenox Woman Recovers from Stroke with Help from Rehabilitation at Silver Cross

Aug. 6, 2017, is a day Kathy Albert won’t ever forget. When she awoke at 8 a.m. and prepared to get out of bed, she felt an unfamiliar sensation…as if a chunk of cement had been placed on her legs. She quickly realized she couldn’t move the left side of her body either.

When Albert tried to get up, she fell to the ground. Her husband Dan helped her up, but when Albert tried to a pick up the phone to dial 911, she couldn’t move her left hand. When she arrived at the Emergency Department at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, neurologists determined she had suffered a stroke.

Once Albert’s condition was stabilized, and she was ready for rehabilitation, she was moved up to a patient room where she recovered for ten days on The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago’s (RIC) inpatient unit (renamed the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab). RIC has been ranked the #1 rehabilitation hospital in the nation by U.S. News & World Report every year since 1991. Through a unique partnership with the Silver Cross Neuroscience Institute, patients like Albert are able to benefit from RIC’s comprehensive inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation programs close to home in New Lenox, Homer Glen and the west side of Joliet.

“Since Kathy had severe arthritis in the left side of her body prior to her neurological event, the stroke made the left side of her body extra weak,” said Jennifer Zolp, RN, and manager of RIC’s inpatient unit at Silver Cross.

“Our team of specially trained rehabilitation physicians, therapists and

nurses collaborated with Kathy and her neurologist to develop a customized plan of care so she could regain her mobility and independence.”

Three weeks of outpatient therapy at RIC’s Ability Achievement Center at Silver Cross Hospital helped Albert regain her strength and mobility. She can now steadily walk around her house, use a cane for extra safety while walking outside, and pick up items with her left hand.

“I wouldn’t go anywhere else but Silver Cross because everyone took such good care of me,” said Albert. “And my speech, physical and occupational therapists all built up my self-confidence and by doing so, they gave me such great hope for a successful recovery. I am forever grateful to have received such compassionate and expert care so close to my home.”

Interventional Radiologists Use Minimally Invasive Methods to Deliver Targeted Treatments Through a tiny incision in the skin, highly trained interventional radiologists at Silver Cross Hospital Feraz Rahman, MD, and Ashish Vyas, MD, can deliver precise, targeted treatments for complex and sometimes lifethreatening diseases and conditions, including cancer, arterial disease, high blood pressure, uterine fibroids, osteoporosis and more.

Interventional radiology treatments are a well-accepted choice for many conditions and are especially appropriate for patients who are in frail health or who have already undergone numerous surgeries. And because they’re less invasive, these procedures involve less risk, less pain and less recovery time compared to open surgery.

Dr. Vyas and Rahman offer expertise and in-depth knowledge of the least invasive treatments available, and diagnostic and clinical experience across all specialties. They work closely with other doctors and play an important role on a patient’s treatment team.

What’s more, they provide both inpatient and outpatient services.

As interventional radiologists, Drs. Rahman and Vyas use X-rays, MRI and other imaging techniques to advance a catheter in the body, usually in an artery, to treat at the source of a condition non-surgically.

A recent addition to the Interventional Radiology Program at Silver Cross is selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) that uses tiny

beads called microspheres to deliver radiation therapy directly to tumors in the liver.

“The microspheres contain the radioactive element Y-90, which is delivered through the hepatic artery and directly into the liver’s blood vessels to kill cancer cells,” Dr. Rahman explains. “By directing high doses of radiation precisely into the tumor, healthy liver tissue can be preserved.”

Of the nearly 140,000 Americans diagnosed with colorectal cancer every year, at least 60 percent will see their cancer spread to the liver.

SIRT is suitable for patients whose liver is the only site of cancer, or the liver is the major site of the disease. SIRT has no effect on tumors outside the liver.

Due to the liver tumor’s unique blood supply, millions of tiny spheres are delivered directly to the tumors, blocking the supply of blood to the cancer cells and delivering a high dose of radiation to the tumor. For a small number of patients, treatments can shrink the tumor enough that it can be removed by surgery at a later date.

“Clinical studies have shown that when used in combination with chemotherapy, Y-90 microspheres can shrink liver tumors more than chemotherapy alone, improve quality of life and increase life expectancy,” Dr. Vyas added.
