| United Way of Grundy County - Celebrating 75 Years

2 United Way of Grundy County is celebrang 75 years in Grundy County. There have been many changes over the years but one thing has remained; the mission to “help improve lives.” Founded in 1946 as the “Community Chest,” a group of local individuals came together to make a difference in the community. The first campaign grants awarded a total of $1,800 to support three local non‐profit agencies. By the 1960’s, the first office was opened in the Baum Building in Morris. Campaign support connued to grow and more funds were being raised to support those in need in the community. The campaign grants also included helping those serving overseas as care packages were shipped to sailors. In 1970, the name was changed to “Grundy County United Fund, Inc.” By the end of the 70’s, the funds raised awarded 12 local non‐ profit agencies a total of $70,000 in grants. Support connued to increase in the 1980’s, which funded 19 local not‐for‐profit agencies with $250,000 in grants.

In the 90’s, needs in the community increased and the campaign connued to raise more funds to meet those needs. By the end of the 90’s, more than $300,000 supported 23 local agencies. For its’ first 50 years, the Community Chest/ United Fund organiaon was solely governed and managed by the volunteer Board of Directors. Due to the increased work of processing funds and administrang grants, in 1999 the first paid staff member, an Administrave Assistant, was hired. In 2002, the name was changed to the “United Way of Grundy County.” Many changes took place during this era. In 2006, the office moved to the Morris Business & Technology Building where it remains today. The first Eecuve Director posion was added to the staff. In late 2010, Karen Nall was hired; the third Eecuve Director for the organiaon; now celebrang her 11th year.
