Chair Yoga

LCCOA is pleased to announce our new event, Chair Yoga. Brandan Lumzy is a certified Yoga teacher who has been teaching Yoga at different facilities throughout Dixon.

Brandan is a joy to have at our Senior Center; all the ladies love him. On top of bringing exercise to our seniors, he has also brought so much laughter. We want to thank Brandan for his devotion to our senior population. His class is growing weekly, so give LCCOA a call at 815-288-9236, and reserve you seat for a wonderful hour of exercise and fun. Aging in Place

We have a new group of Euchre players, and a few of our old ones.

Our focus here at LCCOA is always on our seniors. Aging in Place is being presented by Janell Loos from Heritage Woods on May 11 at 11 a.m.

The program will start with Janell’s presentation, and finish with a lunch provided by LCCOA. Janell’s focus is on safety in the bath and in your home; this is a program for all ages.

We have had one volunteer come forward to lead a craft group once a month, but we would love to bring back knitting club or crocheting club or both! These activities boost your mood, relieve stress, and improve cognitive abilities. (Not to mention, it’s fun.)

My favorite activity to boost my mood is writing to my pen pal.

During COVID I began writing to my mentor on a weekly basis and we have continued. This is my way to relieve stress and make a connection with someone. The plus side: She looks forward to the novels I

send her. We would like to add a pen pal program at the Center. This can lift the day of someone confined to the home who can’t come to the center and enjoy the activities and fun — you will see the benefits by doing something for someone else. The Center will provide stationary, and letters will go to local nursing homes or members who need a letter. The Center will provide a meeting space for writing the letter, coffee or tea, and fellowship with others interested in brightening another’s day.

All we need is a volunteer to lead this group.

We are working hard to start a food pantry inside the Center. We are repurposing our maintenance closet to become the new permanent home of the food pantry. This move inside the Center will streamline operations and allow for easy access for weekly commodities and emergency food needs. But we still need volunteers to help on food truck days and during the distribu-

Variety is the spice of life!

New to our activity line-up is a Walking Club for those who are not interested in Yoga or line dancing.

Feel free to come to the Center on Tuesday and Thursday mornings or Wednesday and Friday afternoons to walk laps in a safe environment out of the rain, heat and snow.

Passing of a Dear Friend

I have come to the section of my article that saddens me, but at the same time it gives me joy to pay tribute to our dear friends that have supported us over the years and have joined us here at LCCOA in so many of our activities.

Twila Beard passed away in March, suddenly, and without notice. She ingratiated our senior Center each week with her wit and charm. She was a friend to so many, and a best buddy to Dawn Hodge.

Twila loved to travel, especially to casino trips — “You say 'casino,' and she says 'Where?'" Twila loved the craft group, all of these ladies were her special friends. Twila did a lot more talking than crafting; you just had to love her. Don’t get me wrong, she was a true crafter, but when she got together with her crafting group the laughter sang through the air.

These ladies bring so much joy to LCCOA. We will miss our friend. I know Twila hit the jackpot when she entered Heaven’s golden gates. Farewell, dear friend, until we meet again.

April is the last month to take advantage of the technology help provided by the WACC students.

Students will be here from 8-9:30, a.m. 10-11:45 a.m. and 12:30-2:15 p.m. on April 8 and 22, then they'll be on summer break. Hopefully they will be back next fall.

We will be hosting a Senior Health Fair on April 25 from 9-11 a.m. at the Center. Please join us and stay for lunch! I’m looking forward to meeting all of you.

LCCOA OUTREACH “How Much Do You Charge?” — It's a question we’ve heard asked many times and one that sparked this month’s article. We want to help you understand and educate you on how our nonprofit functions. The answer is, we don’t. When it comes to the services and assistance that we provide to you, it is going to be offered to you free of charge. We are a non-profit agency and we are here to be of service to all of our Lee County senior (and disabled) friends, as well as those in our surrounding communities. We are here to offer support and assistance; it is in our mission to help you remain independent and in your own home, when possible, through our services and supports. We guide as we are able and provide assistance, referrals and beyond, when we can. We try to help make a difference.

We are a non-profit agency, but what does that mean? As a non-profit we

seek out funding from local, state and federal grants. We partner with several various organizations, such as the Northwestern Illinois Area Agency on Aging (NIAAA) and the Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP), which are two that directly impact our Outreach Department. We look to have enough generated funding to provide the services that help us maintain our mission to support you, the client, and that of our community partnerships.

All that said, grants do not fully fund us. In fact, most of the grants we receive require that we have so much that we have to account for, before we can even get paid what we’ve been approved for.

That is where a large portion of our paperwork comes in, such as those pesky little sign-in and sign-out sheets, and all the documentation we take down in Outreach. Not only do we have to prove that we are a legitimate business and servicing those in our commu-

nity appropriately and as described, but we also have to come up with a portion of that grant out of our own pocket, so to speak; this is known as a local match. If we don’t meet this match then we don’t get paid the grant funds we were approved for.

Funding comes in many forms: That which comes through our grants is what covers wages of our employees, utilities, and basic necessities and supplies. But what about all the rest — the improvements, ongoing education, and the monies that we use to provide that local match I mentioned earlier? All that other funding has to come from somewhere, and that is where membership and donations are vital; they help secure our future, for your future needs. It’s the circle of life in the nonprofit world.

Fundraisers are another key component of this funding gap, sadly one that we have not been able to use to our ben-

efit much these last couple of years, with the pandemic and it’s ever-changing ripple effect on our policies, but we continue to be here and be strong for you. Your dedication to renewing your membership and generosity through additional donations during our membership drive have made a huge impact to help us reach our goals and continue to be here for you and the community, thank you. Those who are able and willing to donate when services and assistance are rendered in an Outreach appointment, thank you, these directly support our services, supports, education and so much more that we bring back to you. Chair Yoga for seniors is actually, real Yoga, but it is modified to perform poses while seated.

By practicing Yoga seated, seniors gain the benefits of Yoga without risking their safety. In this class, led by trained and certified instructor Brandan Lumzy, seniors also use the chair as a means of support for standing postures.

If you’re looking to improve flexibility and mobility, and improve core strength and balance, please feel welcome to join us on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. — expect a few laughs, and plan to meet some really nice, new people.

Our Outreach Department is here to link older adults and persons with disabilities to programs to help maintain their independence in the community. We advocate for and educate our clients on benefits and services available to them. We may be reached by phone, Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.4 p.m. at 815-622-9230.

Several people have asked questions about our meals here at Whiteside County Senior Center.

Yes, we are serving meals Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m.-noon. Golden Meals Program provides our delicious meals.

What does this mean for you? It means that if you are over the age of 60, your meal cost is only $3. If you are under the age of 60, your cost is only $6.

Why do I have to fill out a form the first time I come? This is a reporting form required by the Federal Older Americans Act and required for congregate dining with Golden Meals program. It is only required to be filled out once per year. All information is confidential!

Do I have to be a member at the center to eat here? No, you do not.

Meals are open to all, however, we would love to have you join our center.

Membership is only $25 per year or $35 per year for two people in the same household.

Can I get carry-out meals? The congregate dining program does not allow carry-outs. The funding source needs to know that their money was spent on a person. The price is affordable because the funder wants no senior to have to eat alone; therefore no carry-outs are allowed.

We encourage you to dine with us!

Rummikub at LCCOA Mondays at 1 p.m.

Rummikub players are gathering at LCCOA for the European game that’s becoming increasingly popular here.

Rummikub was invented by a Romanian in Israel in the 1940s. It soon became Israel’s best-selling export game.

By 1977, it became a bestselling game in the United States.

Rummikub, played by 2 to 4 players with numbered tiles, is similar to European card games, like Machiavelli and Vatikan. Here at LCCOA, we have several games going at the same time. Feel free to join in on the fun!

Line Dancing at LCCOA Tuesdays at 9 a.m.

Line dancing is a great form of exercise for seniors to improve strength and muscle function, increase balance and flexibility, and improve cardiovascular and heart health. This activity has been popular at LCCOA for many years because it’s so much fun; there’s a great camaraderie, and you don’t need a partner! The line dancers here at LCCOA are of varying ages and levels of experience — and – line dancing isn’t just for country music anymore! If you can tap your toes in time to music, line dancing might be just the thing for you!

Chair Yoga for Seniors Wednesdays at 1 p.m.

Chair Yoga, a new program for seniors at LCCOA, is a safe and more comfortable method to get the same benefits as regular yoga. Our Yoga leader is trained and certified, and already conducts classes at other locations.

Staying seated and off the floor means that even frail seniors or those who aren’t so flexible can safely do the exercises. Yoga can help all older adults to loosen and stretch muscles, reduce stress and improve circulation.

Each chair yoga exercise can be performed at varying levels of difficulty, depending on a person’s physical ability. Please call 815-288-9236 ahead of time to reserve your chair. Donations are requested, but not required.

Table crafters at LCCOA Thursdays at 1 p.m.

Beadwork, knitting, needlepoint, crocheting and nee-

dlework are all types of table crafts enjoyed by people at the crafters’ table at LCCOA. Conversations and laughter fill the room while the crafters busily produce beautiful, colorful, practical and whimsical pieces. Feel free to just join in anytime and enjoy the benefits of crafting: reducing stress, improving hand-eye coordination and building friendships and community.

Bingo at LCCOA has long been a favorite activity. Originally called “beano” when the game first arrived in America in 1929, Bingo has become a weekly fundraising activity in churches all over America. In addition to being a lot of fun, Bingo increases mental flexibility and alertness, exercises hand-eye coordination, and accelerates healing with laughter and socialization. Euchre is back at LCCOA Fridays at 12:30 p.m.

Euchre, also called “poor man’s poker,” is one of the most popular card games in the Midwest. Some stories say that Euchre came to America with the Pennsylvania Germans. Other stories say it came over with French soldiers. Farmer’s Hand, Poor Man’s Hand, Bottom Hand, Grandma’s Hand are some of the many nicknames given to a particular “hand” players might have during the game. One thing you can be sure of: Everybody at the table has an opinion as to what just happened! Come for the cards; come back again for the people you met.

Mexican Train Dominoes Fridays at 1 p. m.

The game Americans call “Mexican Train” is originally a variation on a Chinese game called Pai Gow, which emerged in China before 960 A.D. Chinese laborers brought the game with them when they came to Cuba to work in the sugar cane fields. Then, they and Cuban laborers brought the game with them when they came to America to help build the railroads. It became immensely popular with the Mexican laborers, also, which is also how the game got its name. Join the

game, and develop your skills at concentration!

“Back in My Day” now accepting submissions Authors, sharpen your quills! LCCOA has announced that we are now taking submissions for a new edition of “Back In My Day”! We are gathering stories, reminiscences of older relatives, recipes, tall tales, fish tales, and wives’ tales. What was your favorite game when you were growing up? Who were your favorite people?
