Executive Director By Geoff Vanderlin
W
ell, here it is, my 89th and final column for the Golden Echo. I’ve rarely had trouble putting this monthly column together, but had no idea how hard this one might be. My wife and I have been looking forward to retirement for a number of years but, now that it is here for me (she will continue to work for a while), I find that I am a mix of emotions. Excited? Yes, definitely. There are new adventures and experiences ahead, but there are many things I am going to miss. In preparing to write this, I thought it might be fun to look back at the very first column I wrote, in October of 2010. Here’s part of what I wrote: “As you read this I will be close to completing my first month on
the job. It’s been a wonderful experience and I am proud to be working with such a dedicated and knowledgeable staff to bring you the best in services, transportation and activities to the seniors and public of Lee County. In my first month I have had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people coming and going through the Senior Center.” As I complete my time here I realize how much the above statement still holds true. I am proud to have worked with such a great staff here. They certainly don’t do their job for the pay. They do it because they believe in LCCOA and love seeing our clients every day. Thank you

would like to thank everyone that has become a member of the WCSC for 2018. Myself and my team look forward to working with you this year! Members that opted for the Plus membership can now register for certain classes at Sauk Valley Community College for a discounted rate. Classes that are discounted are listed in the new SVCC spring catalog with a double asterisk (**). If you would like to register for a class, stop by the reception desk anytime from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and they will be happy to help you register. We are very
excited about our partnership with SVCC and look forward to building other relationships with community organizations to help enrich the lives of our members. This month, we will be working on finalizing our Frozen Ball which will be held next month! The event will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 23 at the Deer Valley Country Club. Guests will enjoy a meet-and-great with Queen Elsa and Princess Anna, photo keepsake, buffet dinner, crafts, face-painting, live performance by the guests of
Jennifer, Julie, Cathy, Ruth, Samantha, Patty, and Marty! Thanks also to the dedicated drivers and dispatchers who keep our Lee-Ogle Transportation System running smoothly every day. And I have met some of the greatest people who come into our Center on a regular basis to take part in our programs and activities. They have enriched my life many times over, and I hope I have brightened their days on occasion. The list is too long to mention everyone, but I want to shout out to a few special friends. Eddie, Willie and Helen are here every day for lunch and I have so enjoyed them. And one who can no longer join us but was a fixture here for years. Gene, if you see this, this one’s for you. I’ve often used this space for highlighting Center events coming up. Please continue to read the Golden Echo each month to find out what’s coming up. I will be doing the same from now on. honor, and dancing. Once Upon A Dream Performances from Rockford has helped us bring Queen Elsa and Princess Anna to Whiteside County! Once Upon A Dream Performances has been hosting winter balls for the Rockford area for several years. Myself, my girls and mother have attended their Beauty and the Beast Ball as well as their Moana ball. Each ball was well planned and a wonderful, fun evening for my girls and mother. Due to this, I am so happy to have built a relationship with this wonderful company, so we could bring a fantastic event to our community. We would like to thank Sauk Valley Bank and CGH Medical Center for sponsoring our event and helping us make a night to remember for area families.
And please continue to support LCCOA in whatever way you can. For some of you that may be financial. Please continue to be a member of the Council and send us a little extra if you can afford it. Two other very easy ways to support us financially are the AmazonSmile program, when you make purchases through Amazon, you can designate LCCOA and they will make a contribution to us every time you order. And, if you have holdings through Thrivent Financial, they allow you to direct “Thrivent Dollars” to us. Another way that many of you support us is through volunteering. The Dixon Chamber of Commerce and Main Street’s Recognition Awards Night is in the Ballroom on Friday, Feb. 9. They will honor the Citizen of the Year, Ambassador of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year, 4 Under 40, as well as giving recognition to Sponsors and Members. And, if that’s not enough, they will announce the recipient(s) of the Tourism Grant Requests. This will be a new format for them, as there will be no dinner nor charge for attending. Everybody is always wondering who the Citizen of the Year will be, and this is a wonderful opportunity to see it first with your own eyes and hear it with your own ears. We also have the Accessories Exchange on Feb. 10 where you can sell or buy items that are party-related in the Ballroom, and books and bake sale in the Post House Community Center (lower level). And then in the Community Center, our first paint party partnering with Amy Fenwick from Roxie’s. She has the talent, and we have the room! These painting parties are pretty popular and I hope you all give one a try. Not only does Amy do the work for you by giving you the tools to “draw” the painting, but will help you also as you paint the colors. For $35, you have a great time and go home with

Does Medicare cover dental care? Dear Marci, I will turn 65 soon, and I am enrolling in Medicare, but I am concerned about Medicare’s coverage of dental care. Does Medicare cover dental procedures? And if not, where can I get dental coverage? – Dawn (Tulsa, Oklahoma) Dear Dawn, Medicare’s coverage of dental care is very limited. Generally, Medicare will not cover dental care that you need primarily for the health of your teeth or the parts of your body that support the teeth, like your gums and jaw. For example, Medicare will not cover routine checkups, cleanings, or fillings, and will not pay for dentures. Medicare will cover some dental services if they are required to protect your general health, or if you

For example, if you have cancer and need dental services that are necessary for radiation treatment, or if you need surgery to treat fractures of the jaw or face, Medicare will pay for these dental services. It will not, however, pay for any follow-up dental care after the underlying health condition has been treated. For example, if Medicare paid for a tooth to be removed as part of surgery to repair a facial injury, it will not pay for any other dental care you may need later because you had the tooth removed, and will not pay for dental implants or dentures to replace the extracted tooth. Although Medicare’s coverage of dental services is limited, there are other ways you can receive dental
care. These options include: • Medicare Advantage Plans: Although dental services are mostly excluded under Original Medicare, some Medicare Advantage Plans do provide coverage for routine dental care. The costs and restrictions related to dental care vary from plan to plan. If you are considering joining a Medicare Advantage Plan, call the plan to find out what dental services, if any, it covers. Remember to make sure any Medicare Advantage Plan you’re considering covers the doctors and hospitals you prefer to use and the medications you take at a cost you can afford. • Medicaid: In some states, Medicaid covers some dental services. You may qualify for Medicaid if you have very limited income and assets. Check with your local Med-
icaid office to learn more about eligibility and to see what dental services are covered in your area. • Stand-alone dental plans: These plans cover dental services, and vary in cost and amount/type of services that they cover. • Reduced-cost or free clinics, federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), community health centers, and donated dental service programs: These options may be available in your area, and, depending on a variety of factors, may provide dental services at a reduced fee or for free. • Local hospitals: Call the hospitals in your area to ask if they offer dental clinics, how you can become a patient, what services they offer, what the fees are, and if payment plans are available. – Marci

Once your return is prepared it will be given a quality review by a second trained and certified volunteer in order to ensure that it is thorough and accurate. Although this may require you to have an additional wait, this quality review service is done for your benefit to ensure that you receive the best service that we can provide. You can expect our volunteers to treat you in a courteous and professional manner. In return, our volunteers expect you to treat them with courtesy as well. Anyone who becomes disruptive will be asked to leave without having his or her return prepared. Outreach at LCCOA Important update Last month, we told you about some changes in staffing hours with our Outreach department. However, since then we have had some new developments and once again we are announcing new changes to begin immediately and until further notice. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. We will only have one Outreach worker, Samantha, available to assist you in all of your Outreach service needs. Outreach hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appointments are strongly encouraged as you may not be seen without one. If you require a later appointment time, outside of these normal hours, then special arrangements may be considered on a case by case basis. For an appointment, call 815288-9236 and ask for Samantha. Please be patient with us through this time. Samantha will work to get to everyone as soon as possible with any services needed. Please also note, that if you usually see one of our Outreach workers at any of their monthly sites in Paw Paw, Ashton, Amboy, Sublette or Countryside Manor, you may want to call and confirm attendance for these sites prior to visiting as there may be a need for changes in these dates or times. We are currently working on this, but do not have changes implemented yet. We will keep you posted on this on our Facebook page as well as through the Golden Echo. Notice: We have suspended services at the Franklin Grove Library until further notice, due to lack of interest and involvement.
Reminder It’s that time of year: tax time. ... But what if you don’t file taxes? It is important to keep all your tax documents even (and especially) if you are not filing 2017 taxes. Every person on Social Security receives a Social Security 1099. It’s a trifold paper that has perforations on both sides, and has a pink shaded box on the right hand side. Keep this! It is very important that you have the
proper documentation when seeing us for any application we help you file. You should have received this in the past few weeks. You also should have already received your social security document, similar to the described 1099, but with your monthly social security amount. Again, you need to keep this! This is your proof of income and is used in many applications we file. We need to know what your total social security income is, prior to your Medicare premium and any other deductions come out. Please keep these documents in a safe place.
What do I apply for now? With the Benefit Access Application (formerly Circuit Breaker/license plate discount) being based off of when you applied last, you will need to check your records. The Benefit Access Application (BAA) is good for 2 years from date of approval and can only be renewed within 90 days of the expiration date. If you are unsure of when this date is you can call 815-2889236 and speak with Samantha to find out. You will need your social security number handy when you call. The Tax Assessment Freeze paperwork from the Lee County Assessment office generally goes out around February/ March, this year the paper is pink. We are able to assist you in filing this once you have your taxes completed or all of your tax paperwork in hand if not filing. Please call for an appointment. LIHEAP (assistance with electric/gas) is still being offered and Samantha will continue to take appointments on these for ages 60 and over if you have not yet filed since October. Again, it is advised that you always schedule an appointment to see our Outreach department, especially at this time. Walk-ins will be assisted only if time permits and in most cases will be offered an appointment at a later date. The Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) Aging and Disabled resource staff help with a variety of programs for older adults and persons with disabilities. Our walk-in day is on Mondays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For Medicare counseling or more detailed assistance, please call us in advance at 815-622-9230, ext. 194, to set up an appointment. For our clients in Erie, Fulton, Morrison, and Prophetstown, we will meet with you by appointment on our site days-just call us in advance. We do appreciate a 24-hour notice if you need to reschedule or cancel your appointment.
Be on the look-out in the mail for your 2017 yearly income forms. If you have not already received them, they will be coming to you soon, regardless if you file income taxes or not. Keep these forms handy, as they are helpful in providing proof of income when applying for programs such as the License Plate Discount Application and/or Senior Assessment Tax Freeze. Some common forms that are received are SSA 1099’s (Social Security), 1099-R (pensions, annuities, IRAs), W-2s, 1099INT (interest), and 1099-DIV (dividends and distributions), to name a few. If you did not receive your forms in the mail, it is a good idea to make sure that your address is up-to-date if you recently moved. Note on Proof of income for Benefits Access Application (license [late discount/ride free transit card): Please note, even with it being a new year, we are still accepting 2016 income for the license plate discount application up until April 18.

Please note, if the WCSC is closed on a walk-in Monday due to a holiday, we will observe the walk-in day on the Tuesday following the holiday. We welcome those that are becoming new to Medicare and those who want to learn their options available with Medicare. Hello from The Emporium Thrift Center Happy New Year! Hopefully you are warm and safe during this cold spell. At The Emporium, we are starting our 12th year of providing needed service to the community. We start that New Year by thanking you for the continued support. Not only the many donations, but also the steady shoppers that keep coming back. But we also like to meet new shoppers so please come in and see what there is to offer. And last but certainly not least: the faithful volunteers that donate the hours to keep the door open. We are open 7 hours a day 35 hours per week – 52 weeks times 35 hours
equals 1,820 hours per year, more or less. That’s applying 12 hours per week per volunteer. Give them a big high-five when you come in! One more thing, we appreciate the nice comments on how clean and well organized the Emporium is. That’s another thanks to the volunteers!

When Winter Weather Strikes WCPT occasionally must close due to poor weather conditions. How can you find out if we’re closed? • Call our office and listen to the recorded message • Check our Facebook page • Watch channel 8 or 6 WCPT follows Unit 5 when it comes to winter closings. If the schools are closed, we will likely be closed as well. Our main priority is ensuring our drivers and riders safety. We have also had extremely cold temperatures in our area recently. WCPT will close when the temperatures dip well below zero. When the temperatures are extremely cold, it is hard for the drivers to keep the buses warm. WCPT makes frequent stops which requires the large bus doors to continually open and shut. All our vehicles are also lift equipped. When a driver utilizes the lift, they must leave the lift doors open for several minutes at a time. When the temperatures are extremely low, it makes it very hard to maintain the heat within the buses. We understand that closures can create issues for riders and we sincerely apologize for that. However, our riders have been very understanding this winter when we have had to close. We are so thankful for all our wonderful riders!
Lee-Ogle Transportation System teamed up with the Rochelle Community Action Network (C.A.N.) on Dec. 7 for their Children’s Christmas Shopping Trip. This year, the program provided presents for more than 225 children ages 6 months to 14 years.
